SALLY SALAMANDER DOWNTOWN WALKING TOUR Spotted salamanders can be hard to see, but it’s worth the search to find Sally Salamander — because she’ll help you learn about and enjoy Columbia. The salamander is the official state amphibian, and the Leadership Columbia class of 2009 used her as a model for a walking tour they created for the downtown area. You’ll find Sally on historic and cultural sites. (Salamander at First Citizens Complex, 1230 Main St) At the corner of Main and Gervais, Sally notices the home of democracy at the State House located in the heart of Columbia, the Palmetto State’s Capital. It is an historic building with a storied past of war, struggle and accomplishment. The State House grounds are home to more than two dozen monuments. 3 I Arcade Mall
Built in 1912, the Arcade was Columbia’s first indoor mall. The architecture features terra cotta and marble detailing. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 17, 1982. 1332 Main Street
4 I Palmetto Building
You are now standing next to a building nearly 100 years old. The Palmetto Building was built in 1913 and featured a bank on the first level. Notice the architecture of the building. Take a walk inside and feel the different stones. Can you tell what they are? 1400 Main Street

Look up and discover a unique piece of work created by Columbia’s own famous artist, Blue Sky. His inspiration came when the wall between the two buildings was torn down. Blue Sky didn’t want Sylvan’s to “float away” from the rest of the block, so he chained it down. 1500 Main Street

Since 1917, when fighting men were needed during World War I, Fort Jackson has had a proud history of training Soldiers for America’s Army. The post’s initial site of 1,200 acres was purchased and donated to the federal government by the citizens of Columbia. POST MUSEUMS THE U.S. ARMY BASIC COMBAT TRAINING MUSEUM The museum exhibits an assortment of military weapons, uniforms and other equipment to illustrate how the American Soldiers trained to perform their duties in peacetime and war, including several typical military vehicles from World War II to the present. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, with extended hours on Family Day. It is closed Saturday, Sunday and federal holidays. 803-751-7419.
CHAPLAIN MUSEUM The museum is located at the U.S. Army Chaplain Center and School (10100 Lee Road) on the corner of Lee and Benning roads. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. FINANCE CORPS MUSEUM The Finance Corps Museum is colocated with the U.S. Army Adjutant General’s Corps Museum. The exhibit gallery is open to the public 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, except federal holidays. The museum is located on the corner of Strom Thurmond Boulevard and Magruder Avenue in Building 4392. Admission is free and it is handicapped-accessible. 803-751-3771.
ADJUTANT GENERAL MUSEUM The Adjutant General’s Corps Museum is dedicated to the history of the U.S. Army Adjutant General’s Corps from 1775 to present. Historical documents, photos, uniforms and equipment depict the diverse history of the corps

FORT JACKSON NATIONAL CEMETARY The 585-acre national cemetery will serve veterans’ needs well into the next century. The cemetery is located about a quarter of a mile off Interstate 20 (4170 Percival Road) on property formerly held by Fort Jackson. The 50-acre interment area will provide 5,000 full-casket gravesites, including 4,200 pre-placed crypts, 5,000 inground cremation sites and 2,000 columbarium niches. Non-affiliated civilians must make all purchases online at Webtrac. All civilian visitors must pass a background check to be granted access to the post and the water park (please note the process can take anywhere from few days to a few weeks to completes, so please plan ahead).

ADVENTURE HOT SPOTS With more than 1 million visitors each year, RIVERBANKS ZOO AND GARDEN (on the cover) is the largest tourist attraction in the state. Recently, the zoo completed the largest expansion in its 40-year history, adding natural habitats for California sea lions, grizzly bears and river otters. Altogether, the zoo is home to more than 2,000 creatures — including gorillas. It also features a climbing wall, a 44-foot-high ropes course and zipline tours across the Saluda River. Don’t miss Riverbanks’ gorgeous 70-acre botanical garden.

CONGAREE NATIONAL PARK , the state’s only national park, is the largest old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the United States and features an elevated boardwalk, guided canoe trips, camping, fishing and hiking paths, including the recently added Bates Ferry Trail.
LAKE MURRAY offers 650 miles of shoreline and ample opportunities to sail, fish, water ski, camp or just lie on the beach. SOUTH CAROLINA STATE MUSEUM
Housed in a historic 1893 mill, the SOUTH CAROLINA STATE MUSEUM has a planetarium, observatory and 4-D theater, as well as exhibitions covering South Carolina’s cultural history, natural history, science, technology and art. Also brings in non-S.C.-related blockbuster exhibitions. In August 2017, the museum will serve as ground zero for activities surrounding a rare total solar eclipse.
SESQUICENTENNIAL STATE PARK offers 1,400 acres of pines and a 30acre lake in the Northeast region of Columbia, while HARBISON STATE FOREST is a popular spot for biking and one of the largest public green spaces within a metropolitan area. SALUDA SHOALS PARK has some of the best trout fishing in the state, as well as kayaking, horseback riding, an environmental education center and a splash pad. The THREE RIVERS GREENWAY includes miles of paved trails and boardwalks for hiking, biking and blading along the Congaree, Broad and Saluda rivers. Plus it has restrooms, it’s accessible to strollers and wheelchairs, and it’s dog-friendly. Conceived in 1994 as a statewide series of linked trails, the PALMETTO TRAIL features 350 miles of completed paths in 14 South Carolina counties. Built in the late 19th century, the HARRIET BARBER HOUSE is associated with the South Carolina Land Commission, a unique attempt by a Southern state to give freedmen a chance to own land. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, GOODWILL PLANTATION was first developed around 1795; among the site’s buildings are a blacksmith shop and slave cabins. COOK’S MOUNTAIN is the highest point in this low-lying area.
