Twentieth Century Technology Utilized by Third World Mentality, 1993 Collection: the artist

Beaverbrook Art Gallery Visit one of Canada’s finest and most vital art galleries this summer and experience two splendiferous exhibitions that highlight the power of the creative imagination. Going with the Wind presents colourful and whimsical whirligigs of all shapes and sizes, both historical and contemporary, created by artists of Atlantic Canada and borrowed from both public and private collections. A special feature is an installation of six commissioned works installed outdoors at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, as well as at Kingsbrae Garden in St. Andrews by-theSea. Stranger in a Familiar Land presents the fantastical artistic vision of Don Bonham, who first came to prominence in the 1970s with his finely crafted, provocative figurative sculpture – bodies fused with airplanes, motorcycles, cars, boats, and helicopters. Fantasy merges with reality in an exploration of the pervasive influence of technology and its attendant mythologies on human consciousness. Both Going with the Wind and Stranger in a Familiar Land are on view from June 28 to September 16, 2012. Of course, visitors will also enjoy viewing the Gallery’s extraordinary permanent collection of masterworks, including Salvador Dali’s Santiago el Grande. 506-458-8545, www.beaverbrookartgallery.org
