edVentures 2013 features over 70 intensive, small-group workshops that run from July 8 to August 9. The edVentures program is located in beautiful downtown Fredericton, where you’ll find the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD) in the heart of the Historic Garrison District, a National Historic Site. The college and its award-winning instructors offer many of the workshops in edVentures, a program coordinated by Fredericton Tourism. In addition to the NBCCD, our partners include the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, the University of New Brunswick College of Extended Learning, and Kings Landing Historical Settlement. First-timers to advanced learners - Whether you are trying something for the first time or have quite a bit of experience and want to learn a new technique, edVentures has a selection of beginner and intermediate level workshops from which to choose. Come join in the fun. No experience necessary. New for 2013 - edVentures has expanded to include a Master Class Series. The stellar line-up includes more of Canada's most prestigious artists including: Photographer Freeman Patterson, father & son team of egg tempera painters Tom & William Forrestall, book binder Don Taylor and metalsmith Mary K. McIntyre. Workshops take place from 9am - 12 noon and 1pm to 4pm, unless otherwise indicated. Lunch is on your own with several unique restaurants nearby. The Beaverbrook Art Gallery A gift to the people of New Brunswick, from Lord Beaverbrook, the Beaverbrook Art Gallery is located directly across from the Legislative Assembly. The Gallery’s permanent collection features works by Canadian and British artists and a unique sample of international art. The Gallery exhibits an exciting mix of works from its own collection as well as works and exhibitions on loan from other institutions. Open year round. Draping for Fashion Design Instructor: Joanne Venart • Date: July 9-12 • Length: 4 Days Level: Intermediate • Workshop Fee: $240 • Materials Fee: $75 Draping fabric directly on to a dress form allows the designer to see their designs come to life immediately. In this four-day workshop, participants will explore the basics of draping and try out some design ideas on a “Judy”. If you would like to drape designs to fit yourself, it is recommended that you attend the preceding one-day Make Your Own Dress Form workshop.

Fashion Illustration Instructor: Tracy Austin • Date: July 20-21 • Length: 2 Days Level: Beginner • Workshop Fee: $140 • Materials Fee: $25 Do you have magnificent designs in your imagination that you cannot transfer to paper? This introductory workshop introduces basic illustration styles and techniques to aspiring fashion illustrators. Tracy will demonstrate and guide each participant as they work on drawing, sketching, and textile rendering skills needed to create illustrations on either male or female figures.
Make Your Own Dress Form Instructor: Joanne Venart • Date: July 8 • Length: 1 Day Level: Beginner • Workshop Fee: $70 • Materials Fee: $20 Have you ever wished you had a twin? Someone who could stand still for you while you fit that dress or hemmed that skirt? In one day your wish can come true! Using brown paper tape you will make your own dress form. Please come wearing appropriate under garments and have a tight fitting tee shirt with sleeves that you won’t mind cutting apart and you’ll come away with your own personalized dress form – perfect for helping you complete that next garment for yourself with ease. (No sewing experience is necessary for this workshop).
Pattern Development (Introduction) Instructor: Ellen Woolaver • Date: July 22-26 • Length: 5 Days Level: Intermediate • Workshop Fee: $300 • Materials Fee: $45 Would you like to design completely original clothing? Something that will amaze your friends and colleagues? Join Ellen Woolaver in this five-day workshop as she teaches you to transform brown paper into something exceptional. Learn pattern development for fashion design – some quarter scale, some full scale - mock ups will be fitted for bodice, skirt and pant. Bring your basic sewing skills and leave with a new talent.
Serger Basics Instructor: Joanne Venart • Date: July 13 • Length: 1 Day Level: Intermediate • Workshop Fee: $70 • Materials Fee: $20 Note: Participants are asked to bring along their own Serger and basic sewing kit. A $10 loan fee will apply to those who do not bring along their own machine. This needs to be reserved when registering for the workshop. How’s your tension – a little too taut? Perhaps things are loose and coming unravelled? Then it’s time you took this one-day Serger workshop with costumer Joanne Venart. Through demonstrations and hands-on experience, you will have the opportunity to learn how the Serger machine works, how to troubleshoot

problems, and play with its potential. Take home your finished sampler as a reminder of all the techniques and applications you can master. Stop coming apart at the seams!

In this five-day workshop, learn the basics of sewing while creating interesting projects. If you have simple sewing machine knowledge, let Melanie Mitchell show you how to spice up your wardrobe. Then, watch heads turn as you walk down the street.

Aboriginal Ash Basketry: Maliseet Tradition Instructor: Katie Nicholas • Date: July 29-August 2 • Length: 5 Days Level: All Levels • Workshop Fee: $300 • Materials Fee: $60 The Aboriginal Ash Basketry workshop is a hands-on workshop that will include information/demonstrations on the process of obtaining ash splints from the ash log that are used in making ash baskets. Participants will be taught how to make three different kinds of baskets that are traditional to the Maliseet people of the area (a fiddlehead, square and round fancy basket). Participants will learn every

aspect of ash basketry beginning with preparing the ash splints in order to weave each basket. Following the preparation of the ash splints, participants will learn the layout, the weaving process and the finishing process of each individual basket, as well as the color dye process and curl technique of the fancy baskets. Participants will leave the workshop with 3 beautiful baskets and the knowledge of a craft born from a culture that is a part of New Brunswick’s heritage.
Aboriginal Paddle Making: Maliseet Tradition Instructor: Charlie Gaffney • Date: July 8-12 • Length: 5 Days Level: All Levels • Workshop Fee: $300 • Materials Fee: $30 In this course participants will experience a unique learning environment with hands-on instruction and extensive historical perspective of the First Nations People of the Atlantic Region. The participants will learn the different types of designs used and implemented by the Maliseet, Mi’kmaq and Passamaquoddy Peoples. Also, participants will learn to identify and work with different types of wood used to create these beautiful and unique paddles.
Flax Processing Instructor: Kings Landing Interpreters • Location: Kings Landing Historical Settlement • Date: July 20 • Time: 1pm-4pm • Length: ½ Day Workshop Fee: $40 • Materials Fee: N/A Don’t get your hackles up yet – this could be fun! Early settlers spent as much time processing flax as they did wool. They used the linen cloth for clothing and tea towels. The expression ‘flaxen beauty’ comes from the flax plant; the blue blossoms represent blue eyes and the combed out flax look very much like a young lady’s blond locks. In this half-day workshop, you will learn the process of rippling, retting, braking, scutching, hackling, spinning, and weaving. Your only means of baking gingerbread is the fireplace and several cast iron pots. In this half-day workshop, you will learn to bake using both a wall oven in your fireplace and a Dutch oven. If you’ve got the right amount of coals under, and on top of the Dutch oven, your cake will bake in no time. You have no timer, but you can check your cake with a piece of straw to see if it’s done.

Join the master printer in his 1890 shop where posters, tickets and handbills are printed. Participants will learn about typefaces, point sizes and fonts and how to “set in the stick”. See how to “block the chase with furniture” and set it in one of the two platen job presses. Load the press with ink and print on paper, card and a fabric bag. Aprons will be provided, but participants are asked to dress in old clothes as there is a great possibility you will get inked!

It’s time for a quilting bee! This event was about more than the production of bed coverings, it was a chance for community women to get together and socialize. In this half-day workshop, an experienced quilter will teach you the history of quilting and show you artifact quilts displayed at Kings Landing. You will discuss how to set up and quilt a typical bed covering. Then try your hand at the Nine Patch Star pillow-top that you can take home. Quilt side by side with the costumed Kings Landing staff on a reproduction quilt they are working on in a heritage home and catch up on the gossip of a 19th century village.

In the 19th century, fireplaces were the only form of heat and often died down during the night. When your wool skirts

or aprons developed holes in them, you never threw them out. Cloth of any kind was highly valued because it took a lot of time and effort to make it. In this halfday workshop, you will learn the tools and techniques used to hook rugs and work on a reproduction rug with Kings Landing staff. For braided rugs you will sew strips of cloth into long lengths, braid them, then shape them into oval, circular, or rectangular rugs.

They can also be quite the challenge even if you have! The most difficult part of creating larger forms is controlling the greater amount of clay that you must use. By creating large forms in sections you can reduce the strength required as well as the strain on the body. Participants will learn different joining techniques for creating large forms on a pottery wheel and be able to complete at least two large forms, ranging in the size of 14” to 20”. Forms may be a platter, large vase, or a bottle. Participants must have some experience throwing on a pottery wheel.

Samples for dyeing will be provided, however, participants are welcome to bring along their own yarns, fabric, or fleece to be used instead. Do you work with fibres but sometimes can’t find that perfect shade when you need it? Why not learn how to make your supplies exactly the colour you are looking for? In this one-day workshop, participants will learn various ways of dyeing yarn, fabric, and fleece for various projects including knitting, crochet, rug hooking, felting, and weaving. Acid dyes that are fixed with vinegar, the safest of all chemical dyes, will be used. Colour theory will be explained and participants will learn how to mix their own colours from red, blue, yellow, and black.

Beautiful bright colors can be obtained by dyeing with natural dyes. In this oneday workshop, participants will learn how to use natural dye extracts from plants to dye fabric and yarns. Two different mordants will be used to set the dyes and create a range of colours from certain plant extracts. A few locally available plants, such as marigolds, onion skins and tea, will be used along with logwood, madder, indigo, cochineal and cutch extracts. Bring along your own choice of cotton, linen, wool, silk clothing or fabric to create your own one-of-a-kind design.

Did you inherit a loom and don't know what to do with it? Did you weave 20 years ago and need a refresher course? In this weekend workshop, you will learn how to do warp calculations, make a warp, thread the loom, weave, and finish a scarf. If this all sounds confusing, don't worry. Knitting (Introduction) Instructor: Trish Campbell • Date: July 13 • Length: 1 Day Level: Beginner • Workshop Fee: $70 • Materials Fee: $30 This is the perfect class for beginners or as a refresher for those who have been away from knitting. Participants will learn the foundation of knitting, casting on and off, and the knit and purl stitch. Two different swatches will be achieved after which you will begin and finish a trendy, cabled headband.
Knitting: Toe Up Entrelac Socks (Intermediate) Instructor: Trish Campbell • Date: July 27-28 • Length: 2 Day Level: Intermediate • Workshop Fee: $140 • Materials Fee: $30 Entrelac is a knitting technique used to create a textured diamond pattern that resembles basket-woven strips of knitted fabric. These socks are knit from the toe up to ensure a perfect fit. They will be constructed using the magic loop technique which uses one very long circular needle to knit a small circumference. Knowledge of knit are purl stitches are essential, and while not necessary, some experience knitting in the round would be beneficial.
Overshot Weaving Instructor: Jacqueline Bourque • Date: July 8-12 • Length: 5 Days Level: Beginner-Intermediate • Workshop Fee: $300 • Materials Fee: $15 Note: Some previous weaving experience would be helpful and being comfortable using a computer is essential. The materials fee covers the basic

materials for a table runner. Those that wish to upgrade their yarns or make a larger size table runner may do so and pay a slightly higher fee when choosing materials on the first day of the workshop. Overshot is a traditional weaving technique that was well known in Atlantic Canada. Using two shuttles and two different kinds of yarn at the same time, a weaver can create beautiful patterns. Even more exciting is the ability to create unique patterns on a computer using names or phrases. In this five-day workshop, you will learn the basics of overshot and then design and weave your own unique table runner pattern on a floor loom. The runner would be between 12 and 18 inches wide and 3 to 6 feet long depending on previous weaving experience.
Painting with Thread Instructor: Kathy Tidswell • Date: July 13-14 • Length: 2 Days Level: Beginner-Advanced • Workshop Fee: $140 • Materials Fee: $36 Learn to use the needle of the sewing machine like a paint brush to produce wonderful texture. Initially make a reference work of free motion straight and zigzag stitches to create grasses, weeds, flowers, trees, water etc. After the basic free motion embroidery stitches are mastered, participants can create a simple fabric landscape on which to paint with their sewing machines. Participants who have previously taken the course may refresh their skills and work under guidance on their own projects.

There will be plenty of time for discussion about what wool fabric is suitable, where to find it and how to finish your piece. Your kit will include a hook, pattern, backing and woolen fabric. All you need to supply is scissors, 14" quilting hoop if you have it, and an interest in learning about traditional rug hooking.
Rug Hooking: Fine Shading, William Morris Designs Instructor: Doris Norman • Date: July 24-26 • Length: 3 Days Level: Intermediate - Advanced • Workshop Fee: $180 • Materials Fees: $76 Note: Hook ($12-$45) and frames ($35-$110) are available for loan OR sale OR student may bring their own. Take a trip back in time to the eighteen hundreds; we will create works of beauty inspired by this remarkable man’s designs for tapestries, tiles, stained glass, wall paper, etc. Although intricate shading is not involved, some shading will be taught using wide and narrow cuts of wool flannel. Hooking techniques, fun and learning will be emphasized. Various finishing techniques will be demonstrated. Course is open to anyone with some rug hooking experience.

Creating a Medieval Journal Master Class Series • Instructor: Don Taylor • Date: July 20 • Length: 1 Day Level: Beginner - Advanced • Workshop Fee: $120 • Materials Fee: $10 In the 14th and 15th centuries, before the universal availability of printing and as paper became more available, students and other professionals such as doctors and accountants began to need books of various sorts to record information. Many people ended up binding ledger and other notebooks that were cheaper and light in weight for portability in comparison to the heavily constructed and very expensive manuscripts that were being produced in the monasteries. In this workshop you will learn how to make these books, with handmade paper and each as unique as its creator. They will feature exposed long and link stitch sewing and a wraparound leather cover. A beautiful and functional time tested book form, perfect as a journal or sketch book.
Egg Tempera Painting Master Class Series • Instructor: Tom Forrestall and William Forrestall Date: July 13-14 • Length: 2 Days • Level: Beginner • Workshop Fee: $240 Materials Fee: $10 Note: Participants will be provided with basic watercolour brushes as part of the materials fee. It’s easier than you might think to paint with egg yolks! Learn the basics of pencil and ink drawing with artist Lloyd Fitzgerald, who will start your training with important pencil grips, whole arm motion, shading, practicing the tonal bar and the effect of one tone on adjacent tones, and how to change these tones to best advantage. As the week progresses, students will learn how to apply abstract concepts and techniques to any image, thus giving the student a whole new range of options on how to enhance the final image. It won’t take long for you to catch on, and soon you’ll do simple objects and themes with still life and symmetrical designs. The instructor will encourage you through various stages. Take the handouts home and keep your pen and pencil moving.

When it’s hot, it’s wet, and when it’s cold, it’s dry. This weekend workshop will introduce you to "encaustic", the intriguing paint medium made of beeswax and colour. With sawed-off paintbrushes and an array of simple tools, we'll paint, drip, melt, puddle, stamp, scratch, stencil and scrape to get a variety of effects. If you find that you're "hooked", we'll tell you how to outfit your own studio so you can carry on with it.

Pastel Drawing and Acrylic Tinting (Introduction) Instructor: Lloyd Fitzgerald • Date: July 15-19 • Length: 5 Days Level: Beginner • Workshop Fee: $300 • Materials Fee: $30 Note: A materials list may be supplied instead of paying the materials fee. So, you know the basics of drawing but haven’t tried pastels? Come broaden your drawing technique with this 5-day workshop. The first morning will be spent on experimenting with the pastels to acquire the feel for applying the chalk on paper and achieving different effects. Once the bare bone technique of applying the chalk is accomplished, participants will be introduced to colour mixing and blending. An exercise in exploring complementary colours will add to your knowledge. Participants will learn the do’s and don’ts for enhancing black and white images with colour. Participants will learn how to apply pastel in abstract techniques to change the image in numerous ways with respect to composition, contrasting tonal values and colour juxtaposition. At mid-week, students will be introduced to a unique experience; tinting on black and white images with acrylic paints. This technique was developed by Fitzgerald and goes far beyond the old practice of photo tinting resulting in an image that takes tinting to a whole new level. Bring along some meaningful photos and you may be able to create a one of a kind keepsake.

Your Instructors Austin, Tracy Tracy Austin is a Fredericton native and a New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (NBCCD) alumni who graduated in 2007 from the fashion design studio. She now works as the fashion studio technician for NBCCD and as a freelance artist, working primarily in miniature clothing for ball jointed dolls and illustration. Tracy is inspired by fantasy, steampunk, and botanical themes, all of which can be seen in her work. Bastin, Elizabeth Elizabeth Bastin has almost 25 years experience in rug hooking. She is a member of numerous rug hooking organizations, such as the Rug Hooking Guild of NS, the Heritage Rug Hooking Guild, Evening Matters, Cathedral Matters, and the Fibre Artist’s Guild of Fredericton. In 1998, Bastin became a certified instructor through the Rug Hooking Guild of NS and has taught courses across the Maritimes. She likes to teach beginners because once they try it, they’re usually ‘hooked’. She enjoys sharing her knowledge with interested persons and especially enjoys new hookers becoming engaged in the process of rug hooking. Biggs, Beth Beth Biggs, RCA, is known internationally for her fabulous jewellery and metalwork. Prior to teaching at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, she taught at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and was senior instructor of the Fine Arts and Crafts Program at Nunavut Arctic College. She was commissioned by Adrienne Clarkson to produce gifts for Her Majesty the Queen of England, Prime Minister Jean Chrétien, and the Clarkson Cup for women's hockey. Beth Biggs has been honoured with the Golden Jubilee Medal for contribution to arts education in Nunavut, and elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. Bourque, Jacqueline Jacqueline Bourque is a graduate of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, where she is currently the weaving instructor. She has been a fibre artist for many years. Primarily a weaver, Bourque has expanded her fibre interests to include felting, dyeing, and spinning. She is a member of the New Brunswick Crafts Council and has had her work shown in many galleries around the province.

Campbell, Trish Trish Campbell is a Fredericton native and avid knitter. Trish has been operating Fredericton's LYS (local yarn shop) for 16 years, and instructing all levels of knitting for 15 years. Close, Joanna Joanna studied textiles at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, completing her Bachelor of Fine Arts with a Major in Textiles in 2004. She started her professional art practice in 2004 and completed a Master of Arts degree in Textile and Fibre Art at the Winchester School of Art in the United Kingdom in 2006. Since that time she has lived and made artwork in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Yukon Territory. Joanna now teaches at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University in the Textiles Department. Along with maintaining her art practice, she also teaches workshops around the Maritimes. Joanna’s work involves exploring landscape images through textiles and drawing. Using rural spaces between urban centres as inspiration, Joanna mainly uses dyeing, weaving, screen printing, stitching and pen and ink in her work. Much of her work addresses the landscape of southern New Brunswick, where she is from and visits often. She currently lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her work is shown and sold in galleries, shops, craft fairs and online. Colwell, Chris Ceramist Chris Colwell graduated with honours from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, and operated his own pottery studio for 11 years. He has taught pottery privately, in workshops and at the university level. His award-winning work is held in private collections across the continent. He enjoys the ancient and exciting process of Raku. Cooper, Kristyn Metalsmith Kristyn Cooper graduated with 'distinction' from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in 2008. She has been recognized with such honors as the Nel Oudemans Award from the Shelia Hugh MacKay Foundation (2009), Emerging Artist of the Year at the 2009 Atlantic Craft Awards for Excellence as well as her inclusion at the Cheongju International Craft Biennale in South Korea. Cooper is currently employed by the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design as an instructor in the Jewellery/Metal Arts department. In addition to producing one-of-a-kind pieces in metal, she offers a line of limited edition jewellery through select finecraft galleries.

Crawford, Jeff From Burton, New Brunswick, Jeff is an award winning, internationally recognized photographer, a graduate of the New Brunswick College of Craft & Design’s Photography program, and former Theatre Lighting Technician. Jeff has a vast technical background, a unique eye for light and a wide range of photography genres to offer, such as: Event, Commercial, Portrait, Glamour, Boudoir, Sports, Fine Art Nude, Product, Fashion, Wedding, Landscape & Fine Art Photography. Cull, Jasmine Professional basket maker Jasmine Cull has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Cull was an instructor in the Fibre Arts Studio at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design for 10 years. She is also a juried member of the New Brunswick Craft Council and the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador. Downey, Brenda Brenda grew up in St. Stephen, a small southern town in New Brunswick. Her favourite past time as a child and teenager was sketching and painting. After graduating from high school she put her talent to work as a Graphic Artist. After raising a family and moving to Fredericton, she became interested in stained glass and pursued the techniques of stained glass production. With her ability as an artist to design her own patterns, it has helped her discover the many ways glass may be used to make wonderful pieces of art. After 8 years of working with glass, Brenda realized that she wanted to make it a full time career. Brenda now works commercially designing custom orders for clients such as cupboard door panels, lamps, window panels and much more. She also enjoys teaching classes at her glass studio in Maugerville, NB. Fitzgerald, Lloyd Lloyd Fitzgerald has been a professional artist for about 40 years. When Alex Colville saw Fitzgerald’s early work he suggested that he contact the Dominion Gallery in Montreal. His work was exhibited there for 24 years. Lloyd has also exhibited in Lucerne, Switzerland twice with British sculptor Henry Moore. He is currently represented by James Rottman in Toronto. Fitzgerald’s work can be found in public and private collections in North America, Europe, and the Far East.

Forrestall, Tom For the past 50 years Tom Forrestall has had solo exhibits of his work presented in prestigious galleries all over the world. Born in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia on March 11th, 1936, he grew up in Middleton and Dartmouth. He began to attend art classes at the Nova Scotia College in Halifax at an early age. In 1954, Forrestall was awarded an entrance scholarship to the Fine Arts Faculty at Mount Allison University, from which he graduated in 1958. In the same year he received a Canada Council Grant for independent study (one of the first granted) and traveled throughout Europe. In 1959 he became the assistant curator of the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton, New Brunswick. An illustrious career of awards, commissions, appointments and publications have followed since his first major commission in 1960 - a painting to be presented to Princess Margaret as a wedding gift from the Province of New Brunswick. Forrestall, William William Forrestall is one of Atlantic Canada’s leading artists. His paintings have been exhibited in over 120 exhibitions including over forty solo exhibitions. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Mount Allison University and paints full time. He and his father, Tom, share a fascination for the egg tempera-painting medium but their individual work is defined by their own distinctive creative visions. William Forrestall’s paintings often combine the natural beauty of organic elements with the austerity of man-made and forgotten objects. Two full-length books have been published on William’s work. Fox, Marie Marie Fox is a Fredericton-based oil painter whose main focus is on figurative portraiture merged with large scale installations. Fox studied drawing and art history at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University and continues to draw from the rich glazing/painting techniques of the Northern Renaissance as well as modern approaches to narrative. She has had solo shows through Gallery Connexion (Fredericton, NB), Details Past and Present (Charlottetown, PE), This Town is Small (Charlottetown, PE), Ingrid Muller Art + Concepts (Fredericton, NB) as well participating in several maritime group exhibits. She is represented by Ingrid Mueller Art + Concepts and has an upcoming solo exhibition in the Spring 2013. She was awarded a Creation Grant for Emerging Artists by artsnb to bring her project to realization.

Gaffney, Charlie Aboriginal Visual Arts Instructor Charlie Gaffney holds a degree in Education from the University of New Brunswick and a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Thomas University. His current studio practice combines mixed media techniques that are applied to his art works that reflects a sensitivity and knowledge of Aboriginal Culture. He’s been the recipient of Creation grants from the Canada Council and the New Brunswick Arts Board for his Aboriginal Mask creations. His artwork is represented in private and Canadian Government collections also, throughout Asia, Australia, England and the USA. Charlie has taught at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design since 2010. Gallagher, Trudy Bejewel by Trudy Gallagher Ltd., is an award winning art jewellery studio that grew from a one woman operation in Trudy's home basement to a studio employing several jewellery artists. Today Bejewel sells across Canada, has represented Canada at the Philadelphia Art Craft Museum Show, represented New Brunswick at the Olympics, has won numerous Atlantic Canada Awards of Excellence and Trudy herself hosted a TV show for Rogers called Fashion-East-Ah. Trudy has taught for 13 years part time at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. Bejewel produces one-of-a-kind, limited edition work, but also excels in quality production work with minute attention to detail. Trudy firmly believes that finishing is the difference between home hobby and professional craftsmanship. Gilbert, Drew Drew Gilbert is a multi-disciplinary artist, designer, researcher and instructor at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. Drew is a specialist in digital imaging, photoshop and scientific photography. His specialties are handmade pinhole cameras and camera obscura installations, which have captivated participants during his public lectures and workshops. An archaeologist by training, Drew’s academic interests include prehistoric archaeological research in New Brunswick, with an emphasis on stone tools and archery.

Kings Landing Kings Landing’s Interpreters have taught the history and culture of 19th century New Brunswick for close to 40 years. They specialize in everything from household skills and period trades, to the finest details of artifacts and architecture in colonial New Brunswick. The costumed interpreters of this living history museum actually practice the daily tasks associated with 19th century living, making Kings Landing a cultural pillar of New Brunswick. Visitors from across Canada and around the world have gone home with a vivid understanding of New Brunswick’s history and culture. McIntyre, Mary K. Mary K. McIntyre is a Toronto-based sculptor and metalsmith. She has studied at Ontario College of Art and Design University, at Fleming College under Bronfman award-winning silversmith Lois Etherington Betteridge, and at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design with Brigitte Clavette. McIntyre’s work has been exhibited in Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and Fredericton, and is held in private collections in Canada and the USA. Merritt, Leigh Leigh Merritt was born in Fredericton and grew up in the rural community of Tay Creek. After completing his Bachelor of Arts at St. Thomas University, he studied at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design where he earned his Foundation Visual Arts Certificate (2006), a Certificate in Specialty Photography (2008), a Diploma in Fine Craft – Ceramics (2010), and a Certificate in Advanced Studies in Visual Arts (2011). In 2010 he received the Heather Stone Emerging Artist Award at the Atlantic Craft Trade Show in Halifax and was awarded the Duffie-Crowell Award at graduation. In June 2010 he attended a ceramics residency at The Shaw International Centre for Contemporary Ceramics in Alberta. Mitchell, Melanie Local designer Melanie Mitchell graduated from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design with Diplomas in Surface Design and Fashion. She is now an instructor in Foundation of Visual Arts, Surface Design and Fashion at New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. A selfprofessed fabric snob, Melanie prefers to work with silks, velvets and soft cottons. Through her designs, she often explores her obsession with color and texture.

Musgrave, Deanna Deanna Musgrave is a Canadian painter and multimedia artist. Her work was recognized by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in 2007 when she was awarded the Studio Watch: Emerging Artist Award and continued into 2012 with the inclusion of her work into the group show “Contemporary New Brunswick Art: An Evolving Collection”. Musgrave’s work has been seen at the 2008 International Toronto Art Fair, the New Brunswick Museum and the Confederation Centre for the Arts Gallery in Charlottetown. During her Bachelor of Fine Art studies at Mount Allison University she obtained the honors of the John P. Asimakos Painting Award and the Crake Performance Award in Fine Arts. She has also had the honour to study under the artists Glenn Priestly in 2010 and Alexandra Flood in 2011. Nicholas, Katie Katie is a 32 year old Maliseet woman from Tobique First Nation located in Northern New Brunswick. In June, she will be a graduate of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design with a diploma in Aboriginal Visual Arts with a major in Traditional Aboriginal Ash Basketry. Since she likes to express herself in a variety of ways, she also works with several different mediums. In addition to ash, she works in photography, beading, painting with acrylics and mixed media. Katie currently resides in Fredericton and will be returning to New Brunswick College of Craft and Design in the Fall to attend graduate studies. Upon completion, she intends to travel and teach her craft to Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal communities as her way to enhance growth and knowledge of Maliseet culture and heritage. Norman, Doris Doris Norman is a skilled artisan and instructor who enjoys sharing her passion for rug hooking with others. She encourages students to relax and enjoy the process of creating an heirloom to be passed down to future generations. She teaches rug hooking courses at schools and workshops across the USA and Canada. She is an accredited Nova Scotia and Pearl McGown Teacher specializing in Celtic Art, William Morris Design, Mayan/Peruvian Art, Jacobean/Crewel, Pictorial, Stained Glass, Primitive Fruit and Realistic Shading. Her work has been featured in Canadian Living Magazine, Rug Hooking Magazine and Hook Me a Story by Deanne Fitzpatrick. Her work is included in the Beaverbrook Art Gallery’s Permanent collection as well as other collections.

Patterson, Freeman Freeman Patterson is a highly acclaimed photographer, writer, and teacher of visual design who hails from New Brunswick’s Kingston Peninsula. Freeman began teaching photography and visual design in the early 1960's in Alberta and commenced his annual series of week-long workshops in New Brunswick in 1973. He has also given dozens of workshops in South Africa, New Zealand, USA, and Israel and has completed lecture tours in the United Kingdom and Australia. Freeman has authored a number of books on visual design and photography, including Photography for the Joy of It, Photography and the Art of Seeing, Photography of Natural Things, Photography and the World Around You, and Photo Impressionism and The Subjective Image (co-authored with André Gallant). His other books include Namaqualand: Garden of the Gods, Portraits of Earth, In a Canadian Garden, The Last Wilderness: Images of the Canadian Wild, ShadowLight, Odysseys, and The Garden. He has received numerous awards from various countries and, in 1985, he was made a Member of the Order of Canada. A major retrospective exhibition of Freeman’s work will open at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery on September 28 and will hang until early 2014. Petite, Sarah Sarah Petite has been painting for over thirty years, twenty five devoted to the study of encaustic paint. Her works can be seen in exhibitions in the region, in several public collections, and on her entertaining website. Petite has taught many workshops in encaustic painting over the years, with considerable experience in passing on the tricks and techniques of this ancient, and newly rediscovered, medium. Quartermain, Debra Debra Quartermain is an international designer, author and demonstrator in the craft, sewing and home decor industry. She is the author of four how-to books and hundreds of magazine articles along with fabric lines produced by Northcott and demonstrating at trade shows both in Canada and the USA. This past year Debra appeared on several TV segments of the PBS shows Creative Living and Quilting Arts. Her new studio in her local heritage home will be featured in the spring issue of Studios. Locally, Debra is part of the artisan co-operative Artful Persuasion, proprietor of Quartermain House B&B, home stager and decorator. She shares her love of creativity through workshops and speaking engagements.

Scheffers, Juliette Juliette has been a professional potter and clay teacher for 12 years. She maintains her pottery studio in Harvey, New Brunswick. Her specialty is crystalline porcelain and her work has been exhibited in various galleries in Canada and USA. This year, she has received an artsnb grant for professional travel. In the spring of 2013, she will bring her work to La Bisbal, Spain, where her pieces will be featured amongst other acclaimed crystalline artists from around the world. Sullivan, Erica Artist, educator, arts advocate and arts administrator Erica Sullivan calls the beautiful and creative community of Fredericton home. Teaching with edVentures since it began, Erica is a natural arts-educator. Currently on leave from the Charlotte Street Arts Centre where she was Director of Arts Development, Erica is teaching at the Nunavut Arctic College in 2013. As the Jewellery and Metalwork Instructor, Erica is teaching full-time, exploring new materials, and experiencing a new culture and climate; all of which inspire her work. Erica’s artwork focuses on creating recycled gold wedding rings for clients, as well as one-of-a-kind commissions. Her respect for the earth influences her attempts to be as green a goldsmith as possible. Holding a Bachelor of Applied Arts from the University of New Brunswick, as well as a Diploma in Fine Craft and a Diploma of Advanced Studies and Entrepreneurship from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, Erica continues her studies in Adult Education as well as Inuktitut as a Second Language. Taylor, Don Don Taylor has been a bookbinder in Toronto since 1980. His practice includes book restoration, design bindings, portfolio making, corporate and edition binding for design firms, architects, small presses and private customers. In 1977 Don moved to Toronto and studied bookbinding with Beatrice Stock, Seamas McClafferty, and Annegret Hunter-Elsenbach at Sheridan College in Oakville. Don studied for two further years with Betsy Palmer Eldridge and since then has taken workshops in a wide variety of book arts subjects from leading practitioners from Canada, the USA and Britain. Since 1984 Don has been a teacher for the Canadian Bookbinders and Book Artists’ Guild and Sir Sandford Fleming College in Haliburton, ON. Don’s design bindings and book works have appeared in exhibitions across Canada and in Japan, Italy and France. Examples of his work can be found in private and public collections in Canada, the USA, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

Thomas, Peter Ceramist Peter Thomas has worked, studied, taught, and exhibited extensively in Britain, Canada and the USA. He holds a Master of Fine Arts from Claremont Colleges in California and has served on provincial and national arts/crafts organizations. His talent has been used on government and advisory boards. For over 20 years he has taught at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. Tidswell, Kathy Kathy, a quilter, fibre artist, and instructor, has been teaching throughout Canada and selling fibre art for 20 years. She has been a faculty member at four Canadian Quilters' Association national conferences which are held biannually throughout Canada. In 2005 she was honoured as the Canadian Quilters’ Association/ACC Teacher of the Year. In 2012 she had her first teaching experience in Europe when she taught in Luxembourg. Kathy’s work has been displayed in group and solo exhibitions as well as Grand National Juried Quilt Exhibitions, Canadian Quilters’ Association/ACC National Juried Shows and The Ontario Network of Needleworkers: Threadworks 2010. Her wearable art received the Canadian Quilters’ Association/ACC National Juried Show Award of Excellence in 1999 and Honourable Mention in 2005. Her award winning work has been published nationally and internationally. Torabi, Samira Although Samira’s bachelor’s degree is in Information Technology she has always belonged to the visual arts world, it was only after joining a program in New Brunswick College of Craft and Design that she found her way and showed herself to be among the top students. Samira is originally from Iran, and she likes to exhibit Persian culture and art in her works. Venart, Joanne Costumer Joanne Venart has been an instructor in the Fashion Studio at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design for the past 15 years. She has worked for most of the major theatres across Canada, and has held various positions in their wardrobe departments, ranging from Tailor to Head of Wardrobe. Her main area of interest is in historical costume reproduction that has led work from such organizations as Kings Landing Historical Settlement, the New Brunswick Museum and movies such as “Copperhead” this past summer. Her artworks are in private and theatre collections and have been shown at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.

Vose Jones, Kim Kim Vose Jones is a sculptor, installation artist, lecturer and writer. Vose Jones' artwork and writings have been featured in galleries, journals, catalogues and an art textbook. She studied glass blowing at Alfred University in New York and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Concordia University in Montreal and a Master of Fine Arts from Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine. Kim is the recipient of the 2010 Charlotte Glencross Award, an artsnb Creation Grant and four artsnb Professional Development Grants, as well as Maine College of Art Dean's Scholarship and President's Award. In 2011 she was named the Studio Watch: Emerging Artist by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton. Kim’s work was included in the 2012 Fibreworks, a biennial juried exhibition of contemporary Canadian fibre art. Woolaver, Ellen When Ellen Woolaver was asked to help with costumes for the Christmas production at the Fredericton Playhouse, she had no idea it would change her life. That’s when she found her passion and went into a career of costume design, first studying Historical Costuming at Dalhousie University. The University of Calgary, the Stratford Festival, Theatre Plus in Toronto, Neptune Theatre in Halifax, and Theatre New Brunswick have all benefited from her work. Woolaver has taught costume and fashion design and is Studio Head Fashion Design at the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design. Wybou, Deborah Deborah Wybou has been designing and creating jewellery as well as teaching the art of silver wire and chainmaille jewellery for six years. Deborah’s jewellery focuses on the metal, and one of her favourite mediums is sterling silver with or without semi-precious stones. She also works with fine silver, gold, gold-filled and copper. Deborah’s education and background is diverse, she spent much of her life in design, starting with clothing design in her teens and moving to home decorating in 1991. She received a Masters of Business from the University of New Brunswick in 2004. Deborah has over 17 years teaching experience in numerous areas and is the owner of Antithesis Designs.

Frequently Asked Questions Age Limit: Participants should be a minimum of 16 years of age or at the discretion of the instructor (for special circumstances only). Cancellation Policy: If a workshop is cancelled for any reason, payment is refunded in full. Please note, if minimum numbers are not met for any workshop, we make the call to cancel a workshop seven days out so don't wait until the last minute to register. If the participant cancels more than 30 days from the start of the class date, payment will be refunded in full.
