Take the Scenic Route Fredericton is on both the River Valley Scenic Drive and the Miramichi Scenic Drive, both offer beautiful scenery, urban and rural experiences and a chance to see many New Brunswick towns and villages. Fredericton is also part of the St. John River Heritage Corridor, which follows the majestic St. John River as it runs from the Quebec/ New Brunswick border into the Bay of Fundy. This route is a journey through the rich history, natural and cultural experiences along the river’s 400 kms. The river was been named a Canadian Heritage River and The St. John River Heritage Corridor was named one of the top 3 scenic drives in Atlantic Canada by the Globe and Mail.

Fredericton's International Airport (YFC) is conveniently located only minutes (14 km/9mi) from downtown Fredericton offers daily direct flights with Air Canada between Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax. Starting April 15, 2015, WestJet will offer twice daily service between Toronto and Fredericton. A growing airport, the Fredericton International Airport continues to expand and develop with significant improvements to the terminal building, parking lots, international arrivals, and runways. Being a small airport, this means your clients will not have long walks to gates and there is easy curbside pick-up and drop off. Free WIFI, café on site. Itinerary Suggestions: Attractions and Activities Kings Landing Historical Settlement Location: 25 min west of Fredericton, Exit 253, TC Hwy At this bustling living history village guests will be immersed in the sights, sounds, colours, and personalities that transformed a young colony into a vibrant nation, beginning with the arrival of the Loyalists and continuing to the Victorian era and the turn of the 20th century. Visitors are encouraged to roam the rooms, become part of stories playing out among villagers and get their hands dirty- literally. Visitors can truly experience the 1800s - creaking wagons pulled by work horses, the whooshing of hoop skirts, and the distant melodies from fiddlers and dancing townsfolk. Learn first-hand how ordinary people lived and worked in the 19th century. There are over 70 historic buildings on the 100 acre site and 100+costumed staff trained to provide visitors with an authentic visit to New Brunswick in the 1800s Visitors will find 4 ways to experience the village; Hands on houses - visitors should roll up their sleeves and be ready to participate in 19th century living like buttermaking, weeding the gardens and spinning wool. Visitors can get even more hands-on with heritage workshops, part of edVentures Fredericton, with workshops on Herbs & Medicine, Open Hearth Baking, Printing Press, Heritage Woodworking, Wool Processing, and more. Story Homes – the Kings Landings theatre troupe will entertain (in a dramatic fashion) visitors with the daily shenanigans, goings on and poignant events of 19th century village life. More than just demonstrating the tools and techniques of the 19th century, the wares produced are used in the village. The Beaverbrook Art Gallery Location:703 Queen Street, downtown This world class gallery is one of several gifts to the City of Fredericton by the late Max Aitken (Lord Beaverbrook).The permanent collection was established in 1959 by Lord Beaverbrook with his generous donation of British and Canadian works of art. Highlights include international artworks by Thomas Gainsborough, John Constable, Lucian Freud, the only oil painting of his work on public display in Canada, J.M.W. Turner, Joshua Reynolds, Graham Sutherland and Salvador Dalí's masterpiece Santiago El Grande, the second-largest canvas he ever painted (an immense 13½ × 10 feet, 4.1m x 3m). (currently touring North America part of the Gallery’s Masterworks until 2015). From May to August 23, 2015 the Masterworks Collection of 75 works will return to Fredericton in a blockbuster presentation. Some of Atlantic Canada’s finest artists are represented at the Gallery including Molly Lamb Bobak, Mary Pratt, Alex Colville, Tom Forestall and Yvon Gallant. The Gallery features an important collection of paintings by Cornelius Krieghoff and the outstanding Lucille Pillow Collection of English porcelain. The Gallery also hosts temporary and touring exhibitions from across Canada and around the world. Lord Beaverbrook -William Maxwell Aitken – was a self-made man who grew up in New Brunswick and went on to become a millionaire businessman, a press baron, and a British politician. Beaverbrook built the Art Gallery as a gift and provided a world class art collection to the people of New Brunswick.

Historic Garrison District , National Historic Site Location: the 2-block area on Queen Street between Regent and York Streets Set behind a wrought iron and stone fence, Fredericton’s Historic Garrison District recalls the drama and glory of our military past. Originally established as a British Military Garrison in 1784, the Historic Garrison District is now a National Historic Site and a very important part of Fredericton’s downtown landscape. The Soldiers’ Barracks is where over 200 British soldiers lived in the 1800’s. The original Guard House (built in 1828), Soldiers’ Barracks and Officers’ Quarters buildings are open for tours and have interpretive exhibits. Officers’ Square, once a British parade square and recreation area for soldiers and officers is now a venue for festivals, concerts, theatre, and a parade square for the City Guard. Changing of the Guard Ceremony - Officers’ Square in July and August A colourful ceremony with bagpipes and drums and a parade of the City Guard dressed in bright red tunics of the New Brunswick Regiment. Daily at 11 am and 4pm, with additional ceremonies at 7pm on Tuesdays & Thursdays. Guards are also posted in front of the York Sunbury Museum and City Hall, which change hourly. The Guard wear scarlet tunics, blue trousers and white pith helmets, which is the dress uniform representative of the 1883 Infantry School Corps (ISC), considered to be the birth of the Canadian Military.

Outdoor Summer Theatre: Daily in Officers’ Square. The Calithumpians Theatre troupe presents humorous and historical fare, with a repertoire of alternating shows, a popular lunch time activity for locals. Weekdays at 12:30 and weekends at 2 pm


Free Outdoor Concerts- Join the local community and tap your toes to fine New Brunswick talent during free hour long concerts on Tuesdays & Thursdays, 7:30pm and Saturday afternoons in Officers’ Square. Today it is place to discover the history and diverse heritage of central New Brunswick as a meeting place for Aboriginals, Loyalists, Acadian, and other European settlers. There is 4,000 ft2 of exhibit space and a collection of over 30,000 artefacts. Inside the Chambers is a series of 27 hand-woven colorful tapestries depicting the history of Fredericton. Government House, National Historic Site - free guided tour in English/French Location: 51 Woodstock Road Government House, the restored 19th century stone mansion that serves as the residence of the Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick, welcomes guests into the mansion’s public spaces. Magnificently restored, Government House is furnished with elegant and historically appropriate New Brunswick and British antiques, many original to the house. Upstairs an art gallery features New Brunswick artists and the interpretation centre tells the story of the building, the city and province’s past. Christ Church Cathedral, National Historic Site Free guided tours in English/French Location: 168 Church St (corner of Brunswick and Church Streets) Reputed to be one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in North America, the Christ Church Cathedral is copied from St. Mary’s at Snettisham, England. The cornerstone was laid in 1853. The Cathedral was erected through the efforts of Bishop John Medley, the first bishop of Fredericton whose cenotaph is at the east end of the Cathedral. New Brunswick Legislative Assembly - Free guided tours in English/French. Location: 716 Queen Street The seat of government in New Brunswick since 1882 and a Provincial Historic Site. Items of interest : portraits of New Brunswick's Lieutenant Governors, a self-supporting spiral staircase, and a complete 4- volume set of 435 hand-coloured copper engravings of the Birds of America by John James Audubon painted in the 1830's - one of only five in Canada from a total of 200 sets ever produced (temporarily housed at the NB Archives). Three tours daily at 10am, 2:30pm & 5pm from June-Labour Day (first Monday in September).One tour daily at 4pm from Labour Day until Thanksgiving (second Monday in October). Tour groups can also book a walking tour for a time/day of choice (for an hourly fee) See the City from the Water aboard the Wolastoq Tour Boat & Charter A scenic cruise on the majestic St. John River is a relaxing way to see the city. The 47 (plus 2 crew) passenger tour boat is docked at regent Street Wharf, on the St. John River in downtown Fredericton. The 63 ft boat is available for charter and offers several regularly scheduled boat tours daily. The tour boat is licensed, and offers catering options and will provide a pre-recorded commentary (commentary not yet available). Tours are 90 minutes long and charters available on an hourly basis with a 3-hour minimum. Pricing: 3-Hour Cruise: $28 pp(25-34 Passengers) and $26 pp (35-45 Passengers). Outdoor Recreation Itinerary Suggestions Mactaquac Provincial Park Just 30 minutes north west of Fredericton is a beautiful area called Mactaquac Country, situated on both sides of the Mactaquac headpond on the St. John River. With great swimming beaches and stunning fall colours, Mactaquac Provincial Park is New Brunswick’s largest recreation park at 525 hectares (1,200 acres) of open land and forest. Overlooking the magnificent headpond above the Mactaquac Dam on the St. John River, the Park features 300 campground sites, a variety of camping services, campers’ store, minigolf, and a recreation centre with games, organized activities and special events. Mactaquac is popular for both water-based and landbased activities. It is home to an 18- hole championship golf course set in the spectacular rolling hills of the St. John River Valley. The park features a wonderful network of nature trails and free picnic sites. With two supervised beaches, power and sailboat marinas, swimming and boating are popular activities. Great Canadian Beaver Pond Voyage at Mactaquac Provincial Park An interpretive guided walk puts you in a beautiful, pristine nature reserve featuring the Park’s remarkable chain of beaver ponds. See the architectural marvels that are beaver dams and lodges, while the air is filled with dragonfly pirouettes and songs of red-winged blackbirds. The gentle wheelchair accessible trails allow folks of all ages and abilities to enjoy the experience. Experience the majestic St. John River Enjoy the hidden treasures of Fredericton's river systems on a canoe or kayak tour with a guide from Second Nature Outdoors. Enjoy Fredericton's wilderness and outdoors with the Fredericton Geocaching Tour (the first bilingual geocaching tour in Atlantic Canada) includes 30 special caches divided into 3 themes: nature, culture and heritage. For the Fredericton Geocaching Tour, you are looking for a small container. In it is a description of the location, a log book, a pencil and a sticker (for your passport).
