Surging forward

SEMESTER 2 has now well underway and the SRC welcomes back all current and new students. We trust you had an enjoyable break and are feeling refreshed and ready to surge forward with your studies. In this issue we look at the DARE retreat that happened recently at USQ Toowomba and also at what workshops are available to help with your studies. We also have a story from a former student who hopes to inspire your journey. Don’t forget to check out the upcoming events and peruse events held last semester. If you have any ideas for The Ashes, the SRC would love to hear from you. Happy studying. - Colin Matthias, Editor.

an amazing friend and this itself opened up avenues. My first session the next week everyone was so friendly and interested in my story and why I had moved here. The parties and social events were numerous and within weeks I really felt at home. I spent my first semester adjusting, juggling childcare and Continued Page 4.

Mentors travel south By G.S. Murray USQ FRASER Coast students travelled to the Toowoomba campus on June 13 to attend a DARE (Dream, Aspire, Reach, Experience) mentoring workshop and retreat. The DARE mentoring program was established to provide assistance for

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students in southeast Queensland. The program is being run at Hervey Bay State High School, Maryborough State High School and Aldridge High School (Maryborough). The mentors give encouragement to the students to continue their

networking. All of this was made easier through USQ seeing me as a student and a person, not just a number. The support from the lecturers as I progressed through my studies was infallible. When I had my second daughter the flexibility and assistance from everyone was commendable. I think everyone was surprised to see me at my group presentation for nur1120 two days after she was born. The baby slept in the corner while we did our show! The personal approach from everyone at USQ as a whole has

enticed me to continue my studies after my post grad year. My learning journey opened more than my future career door as I welcomed the opportunity to become a Meet-up leader. This opportunity took me to places I never imagined - Sydney for the national PASS Forum and Toowoomba campus to present my learning journey. My advice to fellow students is take every opportunity there is on offer as you never know where it will take you! I truly feel my USQ experience has developed my professional confidence as I enter the next phase of my journey.

studies and develop leadership skills while learning about their cultural identity. Mentoring is conducted over a 16week period and includes an awards night and a three-day leadership camp. A special thanks goes to the Toowoomba team for providing accommodation and valuable lessons in Indigenous history and culture. The experience was both uplifting and rewarding.
