Inaspecialcalled meetingFridayafternoon,theRussellville CitySchoolsBoardof Educationvotedinfavor ofhiringDr.TimGuinn asthenextRCSsuperintendent.BoardmemberKimClonts,District 1,madethemotion,and HowardHillman,Jr., District4,secondedthe motion.Boardmember RadfordHester,District 4,wasnotpresent.

Theboardvoted infavorofDr.Jason Goodwinassumingthe dutiesofsuperintendent duringthetransition.Ike Rogers,District3,made themotion,andClonts seconded.Goodwincurrentlyholdsthetitleof administrativeassistantatthecentraloffice (referredtoasassistant superintendent).

GuinnworkedforRCS previously,servingas assistantsuperintendent forsixyears,departing

thatpositioninJanuary 2022totakeontherole ofsuperintendentof SatsumaCitySchools, effectiveFeb.1.The schoolsystemislocated inMobileCounty.

Hefirstcameto Russellvillein2022where heservedasassistant principalatRHSfrom 2002-2009beforemoving tothepositionofprincipalatRHS.In2016,Guinn acceptedapositionatthe RCScentralofficeasan administrativeassistant, whichisthepositionof assistantsuperintendent. Heservedinthiscapacityuntilacceptingthe superintendent’sjobat Satsuma.

Guinnsaidhe’s“excitedandready”tocome backhometoacityand systemhe“lovesand believesin.”

“I’mlookingforwardtobeingbackto RussellvilleCity,”Guinn added,“aplaceI’vespent twothirdsofmyentire 33-yearcareer–more than20yearsspentin thatoneschoolsystem,

andI’mveryproudofits richtraditionandhistory goingbacktothe1920s.I lookforwardtoworking withthefaculty,staffand administration–allwonderfulpeople-andthe community,tocontinue thewonderfulthingsthey havedoneforthepast hundredyearsorso.”

Guinnwasbornin Russellville,andhegraduatedfromVinaHigh School,wherehismother wasateacher.

“Mostofthepeople knowme,andIknow them.Theydoanoutstandingjob,andIlook forwardtoworkingfor themandhelpingtomake ourschoolsystemeven better.It’sagreatschool systemandalwayshas been,butwe’realways lookingforimprovement and,hopefully,Icanbea partofthat.”

Guinnsaiduponhis returntoRCS,hewillbe takingsometimetogeta feelforthings.

“It’sbeentwoyears sinceI’vebeenthere. Thissystem,muchlike

otherlargeorganizations, changesprettyquickly. I’llspendthefirstcouple ofweeksmakingassessmentsofthecurrent operatingenvironment andthenworkwiththe seasonedadministrators andteachersthatare theretowardwhatisthe bestavenuegoingforwardwithrespecttoeducationalprogramsandall thevariedaspectsofthat inallfourschools.”

Heexplainedhis plannedapproachtothe roleofRCSsuperintendent.

“I’llapproachitmuch likeIdidinSatsuma.I’ll meetwithknowledgeable people,discusswhatthey perceivetobethetop threeissuesofconcern andpriorityandmaybe thetopthreestrengths theysee,andpriorities, andthenlookforthe commonthreadsinthose andbringgroupsofpeopletogether,beitcentral officestafforschoolstaff orprincipalshipsacross thesystem,depending uponwhatassetwe’re

lookingatasfaras changesthatmighttake place,andweallbecome partofthedecisionmakingforthat.”

Guinnsaidheplansto consultothersindecidinghowtoproceed.

“I’mnotapersonthat makesunilateraldecisions.Ilikeinvolving others.Myphilosophy isverysimple–there’s noonepersoninaroom that’ssmarterthanallof us.Ittakesagroup,and sothat’sthephilosophy IusedinSatsuma,that’s thephilosophyIused whenIwasprincipalat RussellvilleHigh.Ijust keptitalltheseyears.It works.”

Heexplainedhis approachtocontributing totheRCS“Traditionof Excellence,”notingwhat thatmeanstohim.

Theschoolboardhired previousemployeeDr.Tim GuinnasthenextRCS superintendent,andwe wanttojointhechorusof voiceswelcominghimback toRussellville. GuinnworkedforRCS previously;hewasassistantprincipalandprinci-

palatthehighschoolbefore servingasassistantsuperintendentforsixyears,until January2022,whenheleft tobecomesuperintendent ofSatsumaCitySchools. Nowhe’scomingbackto thelandofGoldenTigers. Whenaschoolsystem changesleadership,it’s oftenatransitionperiod fraughtwithuncomfortable growingpains.Anewpersonislearningthehistory andchallengesofanestablishedprogram,learning forthefirsttimeaboutits strengthsandweaknesses, itsgoals,itsaccomplishments,itstraditions.It takestimeforanewhandto ingratiatehimselftoateam ofteachersandadministrators.Operationscanbe rockywhileanewsuperintendentfindshisfooting, meetshisprincipals,learns

thecommunityandtriesto figureouthowhecanbring hisownethostothetable. Russellvilleshouldbe abletoavoidalotofthat upheavalbyhiringsomeonewhoalreadyknowsthe communityandtheschool systemwell.

Dr.HeathGrimeshas doneexcellentworkin Russellvilleoverthepast nineyears,andhisdeparturecouldhavemarked adipinthetraditionof excellenceRCShascome toexpect.Anewhirein thesuper’schaircould,in aless-than-bestcasescenario,bringanynumber ofchaoticsituationstothe system.

Weapplaudtheschool boardformakingahire thatshould,infact,eliminatealotofthosepotential negativerepercussionsat

Grimes’departure.

Guinnwasbornin Russellville,andhegraduatedfromVinaHighSchool. He’salocalman,andthat meanshecanhittheground runningwhenhereturnsto thecommunityastheRCS superintendentlaterthis year,withlittletimelostin orientinghimselfinhisnew role.

We’renotsuggesting therewillbezerochallengesorhiccups–itstillwill beatransitionperiod,after all,andnooneexpectsitto be100%seamless–buthavingsomeonecomeinwho alreadyknowsthesystem shouldbeahugebenefitfor allRussellvilleCitySchools employees,studentsand stakeholders.

Whatdoesitmeantobe aMasterGardener?

CulturaGardenClub member,DonnaLowry, programchairman,introducedKaterniaColeCoffey, directoroftheFranklin CountyExtension,asguest speaker,fortheprogram titled“BecomingaMaster Gardener.”

TheMasterGardener programtrainsvolunteers interestedincommitting theirtimetointensive horticulture-relatedtraining,followedbyserving asanExtensionvolunteerintheircommunity. MasterGardenershave twomaintraitsthatdistinguishthem:acommitmenttobeingacommunityresourceforgardeningknowledgeaswellasa desiretoteachandmentor

othergardeners.

Gardeningisaworthwhileendeavorthatnot onlypassesthetime,but canbeaformofexercise andrelieffromthedaily grind.Gardensalsoprovide ampleopportunitytoexperiment,aspeoplecanproduceeverythingfromvegetablestobountifulblooms.

Recentyearshavewitnessedagrowingemphasis oneco-friendlygardening thataimstoreducereliance onchemicalfertilizersand pesticidesinaneffortto protecttheplanet.Oneway todothisistorelyonnative plants.

Whatarenative plants?

Nativeplantsareindigenoustoparticularregions. TheNationalWildlife Federationsaysnative plantsgrowinhabitats withouthumanintroductionorintervention.Native plantshaveformedsymbioticrelationshipswithlocal wildlifeoverthousands ofyears,whichtheNWF notesmakesthemthemost sustainableoptions.Native plantshelptheenvironmentandthrivewithlittle supplementalwateringor chemicalnutrients.

Nativeplantsvaryby region.Inaridclimates, certainsucculentsmaybe nativebecausetheydon’t needmuchrainfallto thrive.Inlushwetlands, succulentsmightbeoutof place.

It’simportanttokeepin mindthatnativevarieties maylooklesscultivated thanmoreexoticblooms andfoliagesdesignedtosell fortheiruniqueappearances.Wildflowersand nativegrassesmaybethe typesofnativeplantsfound inabundance,whichmay growupandoutquickly. Theseothertipscanhelp theprocess.

She’sbeenwiththeclinicsinceJuly5, 2021andhaslivedinFranklinCountyall herlife.

“Peopleeitherusuallyknowmeor knowofme,”sheadded.“Ithelpspeoplefeelliketheygetmoreofapatientcenteredcare.Whatwouldworkforone patientmaynotworkforanotherpatient. Ithinkwedorealgoodatmakingsure eachpatientistreatedappropriatelyfor theirspecificneeds.Ourgoalisquality healthcare.”

Marbuttsaidthecaretheyshowisevidenttotheirpatients.

TheAlabamaHistorical Commissionbeganitshistoricalmarkerprogram in1975toassistAlabama historiansandhistoric preservationistsineducatingthepublicabout historicallysignificant propertiesinthestate.

TheFirstBaptist Churchwasestablished in1867intheheartof Russellville,Ala.On January29,2019,RFBC waslistedintheNational RegisterofHistoricPlaces asahistoriclandmarkof FranklinCounty.

Thehistoricalmarker wasoriginallyplanned tobeerectedin2023, butbecauseofvarious delays,itwasofficially erectedMarch22,2024,by RussellvilleFirstBaptist Church.Theprocessfor acquiringaHistorical MarkerforFirstBaptist ChurchbeganinJune 2021.

TheAlabamaHistorical Commissionrequires accuracyoftheproposedtextforthemarker. Informationthatcan’tbe verifiedbytheAlabama HistoricalCommission isn’tincludedinthemarkertext.

Manyresources,includingthe EncyclopediaofAlabama, TheAlabamaReview,The AlabamaBaptist,The HistoryofFirstBaptist Church1867-1967,The HistoryofRussellville Manuscript,Alabama HeritageMagazine, AlabamaDepartmentof ArchivesandHistoryand LambertEzellDurham Architecture,LLC,were consultedtoconfirm accuracy.

Themarkerreads:“In 1867,communitymembersestablishedFirst BaptistChurchinthe heartofRussellville, Alabama.Fromits beginning,FirstBaptist ChurchhassoughttoglorifyChristandliveout theGreatCommission. stillcelebratewhatGod isdoinginthelifeofour churchhere,”Dowdy explained,“andwhathe’s goingtodointheyearsto come,sowe’rethankful tobeabletohavethisto commemoratewhatGod hasdoneandwhatGodis doingandwhatGodwill do.”

ForMalone,it’saprojectshesayshasbeenclose toherheartforalong time.“Thechurchwillbe 157yearsoldasofour churchHomecomingthis year,whichwe’llhavein August,”sheexplained. “Wehavebeensoblessed byGodtohaveourchurch forthismanydecades.I’m abighistorybuff,andI justwantedustohavea mementotocommemoratethismilestoneand bringrecognitiontoour projecttohighlightthe significance.”
