New Franchise Report With More Detailed Data for the Sector Because better data enhances credibility in franchising, FRANdata CEO Darryn McAuliffe together with his team took the initiative to launch the Australian Franchise Registry™ and the FRANdata Report, which stipulates the all-important data about the Australian franchise sector. By Glenn Walford

W

ith so many stakeholders involved in every aspect of franchising, and the fact that franchising accounts for in the vicinity of $140 billion of GDP, both broad and detailed data are essential to all involved. Franchise performance data is used in decision-making for n Government policy in relation to Franchise Code effectiveness, n Regulators contemplating where to focus their interest, n Franchise finance assessments by finance providers, n Franchise systems in assessing their track record/performance with peers and competitors,

n Buyers of franchise businesses assessing the credibility and performance of the brand and business considered.

One company, FRANdata Australia, led by CEO Darryn McAuliffe, has taken this matter into their own hands and has done something about it. According to McAuliffe, “Franchise buyers should be looking for franchise opportunities that align themselves with openly demonstrating the fact that they are compliant (with the Franchise Code) and transparent. Our approach has always been to promote a simple way to provide information to anyone involved in the franchise sector — to arm them with information they need to make a decision.” Two projects that McAuliffe and his team have been working on are now playing a major role in making this data easily available and useful for all, buyers included.

FRANdata Report on the Australian Franchise Sector McAuliffe explains, “We are very excited to launch the Report, as it completes a major part of our vision being the provision of fact-based data for use. The Report includes the first ever study of unit turnover as well as encompassing information on franchise royalty methodology, marketing contributions, initial franchise 4

fees, renewal fees and other matters that not only assist franchise systems in benchmarking against their peers but also are of interest and relevance to franchise buyers in their research phase.”

The Australian Franchise Registry™ The data for the Report is aggregated data from the Franchise Registry also by FRANdata, which is the second major project by McAuliffe and his team. McAuliffe adds, “Registration is quick, simple and costeffective for transparent franchise brands. For the firsttime, prospective franchisees, regulators, government, the media, lenders and the general public can check whether a franchise system has achieved confirmed status by lodging its current compliance documentation with the registry.” Given that brands are “voting with their feet” with already over 100 brands and growing daily on the Registry, the recognition of the role it has to play in the franchise sector and the conduct of the franchise model is equally growing by the day. A copy of the Report on the Australian Franchise Sector can be purchased from www.thefranchiseregistry.com.au or by emailing your request to info@frandata.com.au. Key Reasons Why Franchisors Are Registering:

They have confidence that all information is held securely, confidentially and not used without their consent.

2

They want to confirm their position as an upstanding, leading franchise brand that places a high importance on protecting the reputation of franchising, not just their own brand.

3 4 5

They want prospective franchisees to be more confident about franchising, especially their brand. They want better finance access for their new and existing franchisees.

They want to participate in new and innovative opportunities that are emerging or being worked on for quality franchise brands.

ACCC Launches Scamwatch

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is an independent Commonwealth statutory authority whose role is to enforce the “Competition and Consumer Act 2010” and a range of additional legislation, promoting competition, fair trading and regulating national infrastructure for the benefit of all Australians. ACCC recently launched the Scamwatch website, which provides information to consumers and small businesses about how to recognise a scam, avoid it where possible and report it to the ACCC. The ACCC works with state and territory consumer protection agencies and other government agencies to promote awareness in the community about scams. The Australasian Consumer Fraud Taskforce coordinates this work. The ACCC’s role extends beyond preventing scams and includes other areas of consumer protection, infrastructure regulation, cartels and other forms of anti-competitive conduct. The ACCC does not give legal advice. www.scamwatch.gov.au

Muffin Break Opens 200th Store

This July, Muffin Break has reached another milestone — the opening of its 200th store, another addition to its long list of achievements over its 26-year history. The newest store will be located at the Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park, Sydney. Muffin Break was launched in 1989 and became the first systematic franchise network to pioneer freshly baked products on-site and offer national quality espresso coffee. Muffin Break has then been launched worldwide, with more than 280 stores across Australia, New Zealand, India and United Kingdom. With the majority of franchises located in Australia, there have been some significant moments throughout their history, such as the launch of the first freshly baked glutenfree product in a national franchise. Muffin Break was also the first national café not to charge for soy. The franchise has also contributed to the education of the future of the franchising industry, launching accredited in-house training programs that see qualified Muffin Break consultants achieve Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and Certificate III in Hospitality and implementing an E-learning communication portal for online training. Muffin Break is also partnered with the not-for-profit organisation Good Beginnings, which builds better outcomes for children and their families in vulnerable communities, as well as hosts Cookie Creation Workshops during school holidays at selected Muffin Breaks all year-round. There is also one last notable mention and contribution to the history of Muffin Break — one very talented franchisee went down in the Guinness World Record books for the most number of cappuccinos made in an hour in 2010. www.muffinbreak.com.au

Jetstar Adds Sumo Salad in Its Selection of In-flight Meals

Jetstar Airways has revamped its in-flight menu, introducing healthier meal and vegetarian options on selected domestic, trans-Tasman and long-haul international flights. Jetstar Airways passengers will have the option to preorder salads from the popular food retailer Sumo Salad, which include lentil and tabouli and pumpkin cous cous salads. The expanded menu will also include several other vegetarian options, such as tabouli wraps and mini spinach rolls, as well as popular “sliders”. There are 16 pre-order meal and snack options available on selected Jetstar Airways domestic flights, including Brisbane-Melbourne, Sydney-Melbourne and Gold Coast-Sydney, as well as long-haul international flights, including Melbourne-Singapore, Melbourne-Tokyo and Sydney-Phuket. On selected domestic New Zealand flights, including Auckland-Christchurch, passengers have up to 9 pre-order meal options. On certain trans-Tasman flights, including Gold Coast-Auckland, passengers have a choice of up to 8 meal and snack options. Jetstar Airways’s prepaid menu offerings now consist of Eagle Boys pizzas, Pie Face pastries and the new Sumo Salad meals. On board, it still offers a caféstyle menu with hot and cold meals and snacks. The move is the latest effort by the budget carrier to boost its reputation on in-flight meals. Passengers can select and pre-order their meals at the time of booking or add the selection through the airline’s Manage My Booking service via its website at www.jetstar.com/au/en/home. sumosalad.com

Fitness Enhancement Personal Training has sold two franchises in 2 months, both to existing staff members. Fresh from having franchisees start in Melbourne and Sydney, the rapidly growing personal training franchise has had two of their own staff members take the leap into being franchisees themselves. Eli King who has worked for Fitness Enhancement for a year has purchased a franchise in North Lakes, North Brisbane. Troy Symons who has been with the company for 5 years as a Personal Trainer and then Studio Manager has also purchased the Beenleigh Territory (between Gold Coast and Brisbane). Before working for Fitness Enhancement, Troy and Eli’s stories were very similar. Like many ambitious trainers, they had set up their own business and had the passion and personal training skills, but without being experts in all other skills that a small business owner needs, they struggled. This is why, like many other Fitness Enhancement trainers, they decided to take the security of a stable career with the luxury of having all clients provided by Fitness Enhancement. www.fitnessenhancement.com

Franchising Your Business

The Myths Related to

a Business Concept Part 2

Myth #2: Franchising is complicated. By Brian Keen

Y

es, franchising is complicated. You will take your existing business and turn it into at least two new, completely different, yet linked, business structures. In fact, there may need to be three or more layers to this new structure you need to create as you work out who does what, when and how. Franchising is also made more complicated than it needs to be because people think everyone must have their foolproof, “ready-to-go” business layers sorted in as little time as possible. They try to do everything at once without first taking time to understand the principles and then wonder why things are not making sense. They mistakenly think they have to employ lots of specially trained staff, but that is just not necessary. If you are considering franchising,

you are quite possibly going to have little experience in the franchising industry. You have probably built a good business with a good product or service and you can clearly envisage multiple outlets in different locations but have no idea about how to go about putting your ideas in place. So you start to dig a little and might begin to hear others suggesting that franchising is all about the documentation — the legal documents and the operations and procedures manuals. This information may send you in the wrong direction as you dive straight into writing down what you believe to be all those important details. If you are going down that road, it means you have not educated yourself properly on what franchising is really about, and it will be really difficult to get those documents written. What will you put into them?

Franchising means you need to look at every aspect of your business, not just the documents you deliver to your future franchisees. As I explained in the last chapter, you are, in fact, going to create at least two new businesses out of the one you run now — one for your franchisees to deliver your product or service to your customers and one for you, as the franchisor, to lead your franchise group into the future. Brian Keen is the owner of How to Franchise Simply, which delivers a simpler step-by-step franchising system in a number of different media, including the Internet and through workshops. www.howtofranchisesimply.com.au

“Your Story” Can Be a Powerful Marketing Persuasion Tool

John Dwyer conveys how narrating “your story” in an imaginative or creative storytelling helps promote your products and services, citing Walt Disney and what he did for Disneyland. Along with your great story should be a message of authenticity. This is essential in marketing, because this is what makes your customers come back for “more”. By John Dwyer

O

ne of the master storytellers of the last century, Walt Disney, talked many a reluctant banker into providing him with funding for his next theme-park attraction or movie. How did he do this? Through the tactic of imaginative “storytelling”. When asked how the Disney Company raised so much capital, Walt’s brother, Roy (who was the Chief Financial Officer and responsible for getting the banks onside), said, “Don’t credit me, it was mainly through Walt’s incredible storytelling.” When Walt would run out of money for a movie project or theme-park attraction, Roy would put him in front of the banks and Walt would take them on a magical journey, explaining where the project was up to and how some extra funding would magnify the likely profits beyond what they first imagined. Each and every time, Walt and Roy would walk out of the bank building “with the money”! What was Walt doing? He was cleverly marketing his products — through creative storytelling. No matter what your offer or product benefits are,

12

make sure you build a story around them. Just like a children’s storybook, give your customers a compelling story about your products or services using a lot of convincing rationale. n If you market the best lawnmowers around, tell the story of “why” they are better than your competitors.

n If you have the freshest fruit and veggies in town, explain the reasons why. For example, you buy only from the very best farms, which have won awards for quality control, or you get to the markets earlier than anyone and get the freshest produce each day. n If your facial cream reduces fine lines quicker than any others, tell the story of how this is the case. For example, a very special formula from the jungles of the Amazon. n If your guesthouse or hotel has the most comfortable beds around, explain the whole story about the mattress, who makes it and why it is so delightful to sleep on.

You see, “Wow Factors” don’t necessarily have to be “free things”. Your Wow Factor can be the unique benefit that your product or service offers — a benefit that your competitors simply cannot match.

How’s this for a story about a hotel bed? Let’s take hotel beds for example. I am always intrigued why hotels don’t make a big deal out of the comfort level of their beds, because, after all, that is the main feature of a hotel room that we are all interested in. If I owned a hotel, you can bet your life that I would make sure the beds were absolutely divine to sleep in because it is the “bed” that is going to largely determine the chances of me getting repetitive trade from that guest. I stayed at the Westin Hotel in San Diego some years back and have never stopped raving about the bed I slept in that night. The bed’s brand name was “Heavenly Bed”, and it was the most comfortable night sleep I have ever enjoyed. The Westin Hotel chain have used its brand of Heavenly Bed as a major marketing message for years, and because of the attraction of those beds, they actually started retailing them. Talk about “brand extension”. However, this particular hotel chain is one of only a few that have recognised the potency of marketing the comfort of their incredible beds.

Telling your story helps validate your authenticity.

telling “the story” of your background. You should be telling your story across all channels of communications, including your website, direct mail, public relations, catalogues and blogs. People relate to stories that have an emotional appeal, ones that truly demonstrate the personality or brand that your business has. For example, if you support community or charitable projects, make sure you are communicating this on a regular basis. It is important to communicate how you have historically “over-delivered” to your customers and how you treat your staff. You may care to even comment on why customers keep coming back to purchase your products or services. After all, this is part of your story. Everyone loves a good story. So why not give them one? In the instance of validating your company’s brand message, there is nothing better to do it than give your message of authenticity via a great story about your business, values and history. Walt Disney reading to daughters Diane and Sharon. © Disney Enterprises, Inc. /Courtesy Walt Disney Family Foundation.

It goes without saying that your story helps promote your “authenticity”. How did your business come about, where has it been, what products and great benefits does it deliver and where is it heading in the future? After all, it is only when you know similar sort of background details of colleagues or acquaintances that they become truly trusted friends and people you believe you can rely on. Generally, a company’s brand is founded on its history. So why not tell your story whenever you can? I still maintain that you need to give priority to your unique benefits, but after doing so there is nothing wrong with John Dwyer is the marketing and advertising expert of The Institute of Wow and the author of “The WOW Manifesto Giant Book”. He is also known as The Seinfeld Guy because he scored a huge coup of gaining Jerry Seinfeld as a spokesman for The Greater Building Society’s advertising in Australia. www.theinstituteofwow.com

A Worldwide Salary Guide, or Why “You Get What You Pay For” Is Wrong Remote Workmate’s owner and managing director Chris Whitrod braves the sensitive discussion of employee compensation and points out the benefits and convenience of hiring remote staff from the the global labour market, specifically from the Philippines. By Chris Whitrod

I

sn’t it fascinating how we never talk about money? Peers don’t talk among themselves about how much they are getting paid. Managers don’t talk to their employees about how much they actually pay for their labour. Many students go into an industry without knowing how much they will be making if they will follow that career path. We really hate talking about money, and that is hurting businesses across the world. Sure, it is not the most comfortable conversation to have, but it is important to talk about money, so all of us could have a better understanding of how much it really costs to run a business. When people start their own business, they face many

challenges, and sometimes, they need a little more help than what the government is able to offer them. When the times get tough, the employers are not the only ones to struggle. The stress of operating a business in murky financial contexts affects the work-life balance for employees too, and that leads to additional health problems and anxiety. One of the most common reasons for quitting a job is being overworked. Many knowledge workers feel overwhelmed by too much work at some point. An abovenormal workload is considered by many business owners to be a growing pain. The harsh reality is that sometimes these growing pains last for so long that people start looking

Outsourcing & Workforce

for a new job. No manager wants to make people leave their company because they are overworked, but most times entrepreneurs feel like they have no other option — they just can’t afford to hire more staff members to ease the current employees’ workload. Well, if you are the owner of a small but highly effective social media marketing agency in Sydney, you might not afford to hire a new social media manager when the average salary for an experienced one is $5,000 to 6,000 AUD/month. And you will certainly not hire a full-time staff member when you know that the workload will ease in 3 to 5 months. The risk is to lose one or more of your current employees because of burnout. What is really great about having access to a global labour market is that you can protect your current employees and your bottom line. You can hire remote staff from developing countries where the living standard is not as high as in the western world. In Sydney, you won’t get a highly experienced social media manager to work for your company for $1,200 AUD/month. That salary wouldn’t allow a person to maintain a decent standard of living. If you start looking for talent overseas, you will discover that those $1,200 AUD/month can get you a Philippine-based social media manager, one who is a native English speaker with an impressive international experience and sound work ethics. Life in the Philippines is much cheaper than it is in Australia. A Philippine-based social media manager will not be offended by a $1,200 AUD/month salary offer — that salary will soon help them join Philippines’ middle class.

Researching the Best Franchise for You With hundreds of franchise opportunities available, it can be confusing and difficult to find the right business for you. With brokers and franchisors spruiking their business and an endless amount of tempting advertising, it is important to do your own research to determine which franchise will suit you. By Emma Webb

F

ranchise Buyer’s Emma Webb gives her advice on where you can find information on franchises and determine which one will suit your needs.

1

Go to those in the know.

When looking for information on particular franchises, who is likely to know the most about it? Those who own one of the franchises! First, list the franchises you think you would like to own and find out where they are located. Organise a meeting with as many of the franchise owners as you can to discuss the pros and cons of owning the business. Be prepared with a list of questions and be prepared to ask some tough ones. Questions should include what the franchise owner would do differently if given the chance, what issues they have encountered, what their relationship is like with the franchisor and generally any advice they can give you going into the franchise.

Tip: Try to find franchises that are further away from your home. Franchise owners are more likely to give you honest information if they don’t feel threatened by you starting another business close to them. Be prepared to travel for your information.

2

Franchise brokers.

Just as there are brokers that specialise in general business, there are brokers that deal specifically with franchises. Try to find a reputable franchise broker with a sound history. Franchise brokers will be able to tell you all the information that is specific to franchise businesses and are often working to find the right franchise buyer for the franchisor. While it is their job to show you the benefits of buying a particular franchise, it is also their job to ensure the business fits your needs to ensure the franchisor does not end up with a failed business.

Tip: Be objective. Franchise brokers generally have a list of franchises they are trying to sell rather than simply acting as consultants. Try to find a broker who is dealing specifically with the franchise you are looking to buy or don’t get sucked in by their list of clients.

3

Griffith University.

Go back to school. I’m not talking about necessarily enrolling in a university degree (although that would be beneficial as well). I’m talking about Griffith University’s Asia Pacific Centre for Franchising Excellence. Led by the leading franchise researcher, Professor Lorelle Frazer, the Centre offers a range of courses that are both online and on-site in Brisbane and are often free. If completing courses does not seem like your thing, there is also a host of information on the Centre’s website on buying a franchise as well as reports to help you once your business is established. These reports are written by researchers who specialise in the field of franchising, so it is information you can rely on.

Tip: Try to enroll in as many courses as you can. Education is key when buying a business and what you put in at the start can certainly have benefits when it comes to buying and running your franchise.

4

Research your customers.

You may not have much success meeting with owners of franchises, but one thing that should be easy is to talk to their customers. I’m not talking about invading their lunch or stalking them outside the building. Just explain to them what you are trying to achieve. What did they like about the franchise, and if they had a bad experience, why? When you buy your franchise, you will be required to follow their system, and if you can see the customers are not happy with that system, you won’t be either. This practice can be continued after you buy your franchise to ensure you are doing everything to keep your customers happy.

Tip: When looking to buy a franchise, visit them with your friends and family or send them alone. Your friends and family are often the harshest critics and want the best for you, so their opinion is invaluable. Emma Webb is a features writer for Franchise Buyer.

Excerpt from “20 Things I’ve Learned as an Entrepreneur” by Alicia Morga 20 Things I’ve Learned as an Entrepreneur is the summary of lessons leading female technology entrepreneur Alicia Morga learned as a first-time entrepreneur in Silicon Valley. According to her, “Entrepreneurship is a roller coaster. There were wins, losses, and a lot of mistakes.” Because of these mistakes, she came up with lessons we all can apply not just in business but also in life in general.

Your Word It’s rare when someone is their word. Treasure it in others, cultivate it yourself. Everyone thinks they are their word, but even the smallest of your actions can give you away. Call AND Email Call AND email — the squeaky wheel does get the grease. Whether you love or hate the phone, my point is that email alone often won’t get it done.

A Standard Hold yourself to a standard of behavior and business. Here are mine: to be honest, genuine, thoughtful, caring and brave.

Detail Pay attention to detail. In everything important — negotiations, contracts, financings — the devil is in the details — the stuff you can be tempted to skim over. Don’t. Win/Win It truly is win/win — don’t work with folks who think about it any other way. It’s only when you go in with a zero sum game attitude that chances are you’ll get zero. Focus Focus. By focus I mean simplifying — reducing, prioritizing, understanding what is the most important thing every day and overall.

Head Banging Don’t bang your head against the wall — go with what works, but that doesn’t mean you don’t continue to innovate. The key is to focus on what is working.

Kind but Firm Be kind but firm. [Referring to employees] They need structure, they need discipline, they need boundaries, they need praise and most importantly they need consistency.

The Supermodel Motto Adopt The Supermodel Motto and never point out your flaws but do admit to your mistakes. Mistakes are okay. “I don’t know” is okay. Negative self-talk is not. FEAR FEAR = False Expectations Appearing Real. Being an entrepreneur is not about being fearless. It’s about being courageous. Courage is feeling the fear and going forward anyway. Choice You always have a choice. What you will likely find is that you have a choice about thinking the thoughts that are giving you no choice.

Your Guns People will fight you on everything — stick to your guns. You job becomes not necessarily to accommodate the other viewpoint, but insist on what you consider to be the best course.

Business 101

13

Perception is Reality Perception is reality — you’re always creating an impression. Everything you are before becoming the boss is who you are when you are the boss. The big difference is that now the spotlight is on you.

14

Negotiation Everything is a negotiation, even if you don’t think it is. Practically any time you are communicating, you are negotiating.

15

Hearing People hear what they want to and usually not remember the negative. Words are incredibly powerful, and negative words, in particular, have a tendency to stick.

16

Generosity Generosity looks good on. The more good things you put out into the universe the more you get back.

17

Difficult Conversations Have the difficult conversations — they’re always worth it. The consequences for failing to address a matter are almost always more dire.

18

Health Life goes by fast and your health is the most important thing — take care of it/make it a priority. How you treat your body and your mind when you’re young really affects the quality of your life for the rest of your life.

19

Business Axioms The old business axioms are true. Take time to hire and be fast to fire. KISS = Keep it simple stupid. Work smarter not harder.

20

Good Intentions The path to hell really is paved with good intentions. This is to say, good intentions don’t count for much. It is results that matter. “Entrepreneurship is not just about building a business. It’s about embracing and building your life. It’s about making mistakes, facing your fears, love and loss. It’s about stepping out into the unknown and having faith in yourself. It’s about forward movement and thinking, even when the outlook is foggy.”

What Franchise Should I Buy?

Franchising

Coming back from the Franchising & Business Opportunities Expo in Brisbane this month, Franchise Buyer editor and founder Glenn Walford gets inspired to answer the question he is asked repeatedly. By Glenn Walford

I have just returned from the Brisbane Franchising & Business Opportunities Expo. Given that our presence at such events is more as an independent participant with nothing to ‘sell’, “What franchise should I buy” is the question I get asked time and time again during the events. My immediate answer is the same to every person who asks me, and the conversation usually goes a bit like this: Me: “Well, what do you want to do? What do you like doing?” Them: “Not really sure, as there are so many options, which is why I’m here.” Me: “OK, so the best thing to do is narrow the field down, as if you don’t you’ll just experience confusion and frustration. What ‘don’t’ you want to do or don’t like doing?” Only then do we start to get some traction and the conversation starts to go somewhere. Given that there are 1200+ franchise opportunities out there in the marketplace, it is not unreasonable to be unsure where to focus your research on. However, this is crucial, as a lack of focus can lead to a poor outcome overall. Starting with knowing what you really don’t want to do is a great start, as that will usually rule out a large number of the types that you keep seeing and that cloud your decision-making process. It is a pretty simple process of elimination, because if you actually don’t like the work, then you are not going to like the business. I met a fascinating gent on the weekend who had such a diverse background of employment and my conversation with him had an impact on both of us. After looking around the expo for what must have been a few hours and talking with many, many franchise opportunity representatives, he approached me and asked, “What franchise do you recommend?” My answer was the same as it always is, as I alluded to above, but the conversation took a slightly different twist from normal from that point. He said, “I’m really keen on this party/conference type of product franchise over in the far corner, but I’m also really keen on an aged care franchise as well that I’ve been speaking to. So what do you think about the differences between the two?”

I already knew my answer for him due to a word I picked up on very early in our conversation and chitchat about his background, but I let him reinforce it again with my next question. “Why those two very different business types?” I asked. “That particular party/conference market one just looks and feels really innovative and a lot of fun. The aged care business, well that’s my passion, it’s my background, and I feel really strongly about proper aged care for our ageing community.” He’d answered it himself already, but I just pointed that out to him to make sure he was listening to himself when I said something simply to the effect that focusing on his passion is the most important thing in my belief. Passion is what gets you out of bed every morning. When things are challenging and tough, the allure of innovation wanes, while the fun often goes long before that. But passion — passion drives people to do extra ordinary things in all sorts of circumstances. Pleasingly, his final words were “I think I was meant to talk to you today.” Now, I’m no psychobabble genius by any means, but sometimes we simply need to not only hear ourselves but also to make sure we are ‘listening’ to what we are already telling ourselves. Brisbane Expo Offers a Taste of the Exciting World of Franchising The depth and breadth of the franchising industry was on show in Queensland recently, as the Brisbane Franchising & Business Opportunities Expo offered a myriad of top franchise brands, business-focused seminars and even a soapbox to entertain and inform the crowds.

H

eld at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre from 18 to 19 July 2015, the show drew strong numbers, especially on Saturday, all keen to find out more about the benefits and rewards of being their own boss.

“There was a really buzzy atmosphere this year,” says Exhibition Manager Fiona Stacey. “There was a lot of energy in the room and our exhibitors reported good results.” “We feel it’s been our best ever show in many years,” says Paul Kasper from Mail Boxes Etc. (Australia & NZ). “The quality of the leads we got was exceptional, with one prospect likely to purchase a new centre within the coming weeks.” Hunter Douglas Sales Manager Damon Gardner says that the show went well for its Luxaflex brand. “We generated some quality leads from the Expo, particularly on the Saturday, from people who were specifically looking to invest in their own business or add an offering to an existing business. The Expo was also a great opportunity to network with like-minded franchisors

and understand their offering and their business challenges.” Stacey comments that visitors found the Expo as also a great place to meet with industry experts who could assist with the nuts and bolts of franchising, offering legal, financial and business advice. “For instance, there was a presentation by Darryn McAuliffe, CEO of franchise business intelligence provider FRANdata, which offered such valuable advice about the basics of obtaining finance and how to find a finance-worthy franchise,” she says. “Grant Garraway from The Franchise Shop also gave a great seminar that covered the basics about what it means to be a franchisee.” Keynote speakers Len Poulter, CEO of Lenard’s, and Sara Pantaleo, CEO of La Porchetta, each inspired and informed their audiences describing

Most importantly, the Expo was a showcase for over 70 successful companies, all eager to share their success with potential investors and franchisees or to assist and advise them in their journey. Stacey says that the Brisbane Franchising & Business Opportunities Expo gave visitors the opportunity to compare and research a diverse range of franchise opportunities with investment levels from under $10,000 to more than $500,000. “We are now preparing another exciting show in Melbourne, and there are only a few exhibitor stands still available, so exhibitors will need to get in quick if they want to be there.” The next Franchising & Business Opportunities Expo will be held in Melbourne on 21 to 23 August 2015. Business Name Chooser is an iOS app that helps you rapidly test various business names. When you set up a business, you need to check that the name is available in the business name databases for government registration and company incorporation with ASIC, that it does not match an existing trademark already provided to another business by IP Australia and that there is a suitable domain name available. This app takes all the hard work by simultaneously checking these different databases and then confirming if the name is acceptable. If the name does clash with any existing names, you will be able to choose a new name or try out some suggestions from the app. If you find a great name that works, we would be happy to help you reserve it and get the paperwork done. The app is available for Australia only at this stage. FREE (Get)
