Août 1936. Jeux Olympiques de Berlin. En pleine montée du nazisme, l’Américain Jesse Owens remporte sa 4e médaille d’or sous le regard noir d’Adolf Hitler. Théâtre de cette fameuse scène de l’entre-deux guerres, l’Olympiastadion (74 000 places) a également accueilli la finale de la Coupe du monde 2006, marquée par le coup de tête de Zidane sur Materazzi. Deux épisodes évoqués lors des visites guidées organisées sur le site berlinois, l’un des plus fréquentés de la ville. De fait, les enceintes sportives sont devenues de véritables pôles d’attraction, à l’instar de l’Allianz Arena de Munich, de San Siro à Milan ou de Santiago Bernabeu, à Madrid. Réhabilité au printemps 2006, le Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum regorge de souvenirs, abrite un écran cinéma 200° avec effets spéciaux pour revivre les grandes heures des Internationaux. Incontournable avant une garden party sur le gazon du central londonien et un ultime détour par Wembley, temple du football britannique.
August 1936. The Berlin Olympic Games. Against a backdrop of rampant Nazism, the American Jesse Owens won his fourth gold medal under Adolf Hitler’s furious glare. The theatre of this famous inter-war scene, the Olympiastadion (seating capacity: 74,000), also hosted the final of the 2006 Football World Cup, marked by Zidane’s headbutt on Materazzi. These are just two of the episodes mentioned on the guided tour of the venue, one of the most visited in Berlin. Little wonder that sports arenas – like the Allianz Arena in Munich, San Siro in Milan and Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid – have become big attractions. In Spain, you can shadow the daily routine of Ronaldo, Benzema and the other “galácticos”, tread the pitch, and inspect the changingrooms of the white-shirted “Meringues”, before ascending to the trophy room – an unrivalled spread of silverware. Real’s great rival, Barcelona, also has an impressive list of honours and a stadium to match: the Camp Nou, whose museum – the second most visited in the Catalan capital – is packed with photos, shirts and other relics of a glorious past. Another place of sporting worship is London’s “mecca of tennis”. The Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, refurbished in spring 2006, teems with memories and boasts a 200° cinema screen with special effects, to relive the highlights of lawn-tennis history. An unmissable experience before a garden party on Central Court, followed by a final stopover at Wembley, temple of English football.
