Volunteer Spotlight J

osiah Kinney loves theatre and the performing arts, albeit with a catch – he’s more of a behindthe-scenes guy than an actor who’s front and center.

The funny thing is, when he approached the Fox Valley Park District seeking volunteer opportunities, Josiah was looking for recognition. But it wasn’t applause or adoration he was seeking. A senior at West Aurora High School, Kinney was looking to fulfill a requirement that would earn him entry into the National Honor Society, which recognizes outstanding students for their achievements in academics, school activities and community involvement. He already had a GPA over 3.5, but needed to perform 24 hours of volunteer work. So he contacted Kyle Donahue, the Park District’s performing arts manager, and found the perfect role. Needing a spotlight operator for the Prisco Holiday Spectacular, Donahue gave Josiah a crash course, and the show subsequently became a big (and bright) hit. “Not having run a spotlight before, I was a little nervous and not sure what to do,” said Josiah. “But after a little practice, it was just a matter of flipping the switch, focusing and zooming in when I got the signal.” Josiah helped with numerous other events, including Halloween Family Fun Night, Tin Pan Alley Cabaret, Brunch with Santa – and was integral in helping with rehearsals and run-throughs for the Winter Stage performance of Anything Goes. “He is very dependable, cheerful and always willing to lend a hand,” said Donahue. “He far exceeded his required hours and has been a tremendous help in every way.” Josiah, who will attend college with plans on becoming a civil engineer, says volunteering will be part of his future as well. “It’s been very fun and rewarding,” he said. “I learned that people really appreciate those who help out, and it’s been inspiring for me to be involved in that way – it’s a good feeling.” 115
