We asked what you loved about us, and we received an avalanche of answers! Here are just some of them. Thanks, and we love serving you, too! Heidi: Hands down, I love the Auto Skills Center! It’s one benefit I will never take for granted. Krista: Probably all the events at the library! We have kids ranging from ages 1–13 and the events are really great for all ages! Robin: We really enjoyed the Oktoberfest event we were able to go to this past year! Dannielle: We really loved the availability for catering our Thanksgiving meal. The food was great and it was nice to celebrate the day without the stress of having to cook. Probably the best Thanksgiving day we’ve had as a family! Kristina: So far, the fitness classes! Samantha: Leisure Travel Services — we went on our first family vacation last summer to Disneyland! What a great trip! Shaun: I appreciate the opportunity to purchase Seahawks tickets. We had just moved here and my son is a Hawks fan. It was his first pro football game. It was awesome! Jeannie: I love the Arts & Crafts Center! Crystal: Movies on the lawn at the library during the summer. And all of the other summer outdoor programs the library does. Marina: Sports programs for kids. Mathew: Warrior Zone. I don’t live on post but those fight nights are worth the trip. I’m also glad it gives single Service members something to do that’s close by. Taina: The libraries hands-down have been a true blessing to our family. We are always there and this resource makes homeschooling that much easier. Lauren: The trips you can take. My friend and I did one of the kayaking trips. While we wish we were in the water longer, it was so much fun. Reyn: Leisure Travel Services and special

events! We were able to take our daughter to Disneyland for her birthday (with the discount tickets) and she is still talking about the McChord Club Luau from last year! Samantha: The amazing staff working at CYS! Always friendly, knowledgeable and respectful! Raul: All the events JBLM MWR hosts throughout the year — Haunted Crooked Road, Octoberfest, Beach Bash, outdoor movies and many more. Thank you. Erin: I haven’t been to an MWR like JBLM MWR that has so much to offer, including Discover passes, slope tickets and fly fishing classes. Amanda: The sports and amazing events especially by the library in summer. My kids were able to integrate and feel part of the community so much faster when we PCS’d here last summer! Jenny: I really love all the resources available for Service members and their families: Free passes for museums and anything at the MWR Fest Tent, especially Oktoberfest! Jennifer: Our family has been using MWR here at JBLM for over 20 years. From the stories, games, Easter egg hunt, cabins, fun runs, tickets — you name it. Savannah: We loved Parent and Tot swim lessons! Stefanie: I love all the trips offered, like snowshoeing or visiting Leavenworth. It’s especially great if you’re alone at the moment and don’t know many people here, so you don’t have to go and adventure alone. I’m also in awe with everything the libraries are offering — events, Check Out Washington backpacks and so much more. Meghan: Libraries! Especially when you’re a new arrival staying in TLF. They’re so welcoming and have great resources. Jaie: Library events, American Lake, CYS youth sports programs and family events! Shaylee: So far, I have loved the library! I

love that there’s a book club and a lot of events to keep people included here! Nicole: We have loved the fun runs! Sonja: I love the pulled pork quesadilla at Whispering Firs Golf Course and the staff. Summer: We love the special events! My girls were able to experience going fishing and rock climbing! I was in charge of our Juneteenth celebration last year and I was able to rent so much from MWR! Valerie: It is extremely hard to pick one over the other but we have definitely been loving the Arts & Crafts Center, special events and outdoor rec! Stephany: We love the outdoor rentals and camper rentals! Kristin: My kids and I really enjoy going bowling and the parks. We have always had great experiences with the staff, too! Thanks, JBLM MWR! Jamie: I really love the special events like Beach Bash and Winterfest. Leslie: RV storage and camp spots. Ale: Oof, hard one: 1. Libraries; 2. Bowling; 3. Warrior Zone. My family came to visit me one summer and the little ones had a blast at the library activities. Thank you for that! Goldie: We loved staying in one of the cabins on the lake and fishing. Mandy: MWR here is awesome! We love the trips and fun runs especially, Loveleen: The Outdoor Recreation program and trips! Juwan: Warrior Zone video games. Alicia: What I love most about MWR is the events — they are seasonal, well planned and advertised well, and it’s always a good time. They encourage you to get out and explore, meet people, be active and learn a new hobby. Kareena: McChord outdoor pool in the summer! Brian: Golf. NichMi: The 24/7 access to the gyms. Thank you for allowing us to have that privilege.

L

ooking for a fun and rewarding home business? If you live on base at JBLM, become a Family Child Care provider and make a difference in the lives of military children and their families. FCC providers may qualify for subsidies and receive free resources for your business. Learn about FCC at the monthly evening orientations at the FCC office (no children allowed at the orientation due to space/discussion topics). Full-day training classes will meet weekdays following the orientation. All classes are required for FCC certification. FCC has unique qualities that make it a preferred choice for many families. It offers flexible hours — full-day, part-day, extended or overnight, weekend and hourly care in a comfortable home setting. FCC providers are vetted and only the best qualified candidates are recommended for certification. Providers must complete background checks and regular home inspections as a part of certification. They also receive paid ongoing training for professional development. We’re offering two bonuses to qualified FCC providers:

Prep for the upcoming school year By Antoinette Walker, School Support Services ummer break is here, but a new school year will begin before you know it! It will be a fresh start for some and a new school and new teachers for others. Students anticipate new classmates, a new classroom and the chance to see their friends again. Some students may be nervous about how hard the work will be and if they will make new friends. As their parents, you’re also excited for your youth’s fresh start and might be nervous about whether the services and supports your child needs will be in place. You can help reduce your youth’s stress (and your own) by planning ahead and establishing a positive relationship with the classroom teacher and the school. JBLM School Support Services offers you some insight into how to prepare your students for the start of the upcoming school year.

S

Helping your child get ready for school in mid-August Here are some tips on preparing your youth for their new school or grade: • Talk positively about school and remind them what they liked last year. • Ask questions to find out what your child is looking forward to and what might be worrying them. Provide reassurance. • Walk or drive to school to visit the school grounds.

38 ExploreJBLM Summer 2023

• Post a calendar where the daily and weekly assignments can be recorded. Mark special events on the calendar. • Establish a daily routine. A week before school starts, make sure your youth goes to bed and gets up earlier. Follow these tips for your elementary school student: • Move bedtime back a half-hour each week about four weeks before school starts until you reach the desired bedtime for your child. • Talk to your child about expectations for the school year. • Organize your child’s school supplies and backpack a week before school starts. • Help them pick out clothes for school. • Keep talk about school positive and point out the good things about going to school. For your middle and high schoolers: • Go shopping together to get school supplies. • Talk about after-school activities they would like to participate in and make necessary arrangements. • Address any concerns your youth may have about going back to school. • Focus on the parts of school that they enjoy. Remind them of different extra-curricular activities they can join. • Ensure they have a designated space for homework. When schools, parents and students work together, school can be an opportunity for

tremendous development. Students who feel comfortable in their new environment are able to learn and grow effectively.

School registration Registration for most school districts is being conducted online only. The following documents are needed: • Proof of residency (housing lease/utility bill). • Birth certificate (kindergarten only). • Immunization records. • Last report card from previous school (if applicable). • IEP/504 plan (if applicable).

How to connect with the Youth Sponsorship Program G

etting ready to PCS or just arriving? Get connected with Youth Sponsorship so you can get to know your new installation before you move or if you’ve just arrived here! The CYS Youth Sponsorship Program is peer outreach designed to help incoming youth make a smooth transition from their previous installation to the new installation and community. Peer sponsors communicate information about school resources, provide encouragement and support, develop trust, provide appropriate referrals and are a point of contact within the Youth Sponsorship Program, including Hillside Youth Center/Teen Zone, community activities and events and so much more! What do you love about JBLM CYS? Comments from

JBLMcys

Julia: The sports! I encouraged my daughter to try sports for the first time last year because she was homeschooled, and wanted to make some new friends. It grew into a great love of hers! Tammy: The CYS staff are amazing! Most are caring and passionate about children. Frieda: Before and after school child care program. Unfortunately, we were suplanted. My son misses his care providers. Also, we have been missing on-base events since he goes to off-base school now. Sara: The sports! My 5-year-old has loved his first time playing soccer and basketball! Jessica: My son loved playing soccer this past fall and looks forward to the start of spring soccer! VA: We enjoy the teachers and all the sports offered! Our daughter enjoys going to the CDC every day and it gives us ease of mind to know she enjoys being at the CDC. All the MWR staff has been very friendly and welcoming. Samantha: All the on-the-job training that’s provided. CYS tries to educate and guide their employees as much as they possibly can. Ashlea: I’m still waiting on child care so I can go to work, but one thing that I enjoy the most working with the whole CYS is being able to help children grow and become strong individuals. At Fort Wainwright, I enjoyed working the Parents Night Outs because as a parent myself, I know parents need that one-on-one time with their spouses. So it’s nice allowing the parents have that break and creating activities for the kids so they can have fun. Brittney: The CDCs are excellent! Our son loves baseball season. The whole MWR staff is so friendly and welcoming!
