Task force hears defense of Sugar Land's red light cameras By Betsy Dolan

When Fort Bend ISD decided to let the community take the lead in developing a new vision for the district, they had hoped to get 40 volunteers to serve on a steering committee. Instead, 102 volunteers stepped forward. That group, made up of community stakeholders like parents, teachers and community leaders is charged

The two Fort Bend locations were at the Missouri City old municipal court lobby on Texas Parkway and in Sugar Land, Fort Bend County Precinct 4 on Dairy Ashford was the other mobile EIC site. Both locations and the announcement were immediately posted on the Star’s online publication last week. The state reports that many Texans already have an approved form of ID and will not need or qualify for an EIC. Applicants for the EIC, however, will need to present proof of citizenship and identity…a birth certificate and two forms of supporting identification.

The groups discussed their concerns to their planning area and developed a list of expectations for Fort Bend ISD graduates--what they should know and what they should be able to do when they leave the district. Fort Bend ISD has set expectations high--to have no achievement gaps and a 100% graduation rate by 2025. "It was interesting to hear the people in our own community engage in that dialogue. They get it," said Fort Bend ISD Superintendent Charles Dupre. "They understand what we need our students to look like." The steering committee is preparing for two Community Dialogue meetings scheduled for October 29 and 30. Feedback from the meetings will be used to set the parameters for planning and to develop the recommendations that will be presented to the Board of Trustees in February.

WHAT ENTITY IS RESPONSIBLE? A HUGE thank you to Riverstone and Sienna who said YES to Missouri City Public Works. They installed the irrigation and landscaping on Highway 6 medians in Missouri City. The CIP team of MC Public Works Department, led by Valerie Marvin, worked with the adjacent developments involved. MEDIAN MAINTENANCE? Riverstone and Sienna also maintain the landscaping in their respective areas. The areas that remain as grass are maintained by Missouri City Public Works Street Division. THE END RESULT? This continues what Sugar Land started and softens a concrete landscape. Makes driving Hwy 6 MUCH more pleasant. I'm Sick and Tired... ...of politicians, pundits, activists and news anchors referring to the U.S. DEFAULTING on its debt I am sick and tired of all these idiots stating the U.S. will default if we don’t raise the debt ceiling and Obama Michael Fredrickson saying raising the debt ceiling does not increase our debt. I’ll tell you right now that if we don’t raise the debt ceiling, then we won’t increase our debt AND we won’t default on any U.S. Treasury Bond. The only way the U.S. wouldn’t pay interest payments on our bonds is if Obama illegally instructs the Treasury Department not to pay those interests payments. You see our debt service is approximately $18 billion per month while the treasury collects about $200 billion per month. What will not be clear is what other “bills” will be paid. You see, by statute, interest payments

on U.S. Treasury bonds must be paid (from collected tax money) first and foremost. That is the only mandatory payment by law. That is why U.S. Treasuries have always been the safest bet in the world. However, with this diabolical president in office, laws are broken repeatedly. He is the only president to preside over a U.S. credit rating DECREASE. What these politicians really mean when they say default is that the government won’t be able to pay for that massive expansion of socalled National Security server farms they are in the process of building to store every phone record of law-abiding citizens (or any other expenditure they are in the “process” of wasting our tax dollars on). Whoever that government contractor is will be paid for the work performed up to that point. We tax payers would just be saved from wasting “future” tax dollars. Today, it is estimated by some

A new memorial honoring local veterans was unveiled at Sugar Land Memorial Park on Sept. 30. The Tilt-Up Concrete Association (TCA) donated the memorial through the Sugar Land Legacy Foundation, a group established in 2010 to promote community investment in facilities and activities that enhance the long-term prosperity and quality of life for Sugar Land residents. The value of the donation exceeds hundreds of thousands of dollars and reflects a memorial concept for the park that was identified by a citizen task force and the City’s Parks and Recreation Department in 2008. The memorial features an obelisk recognizing the branches of the military. After walking through a symbolic entryway and crossing a bridge to a peninsula, visitors are able to walk within the obelisk and experience rays of sunlight reflecting through a vertical opening. The names of Sugar Land soldiers who have died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces will be added to the monument in time for next year’s Memorial Day Celebration. Jeffrey Brown, of Powers Brown Architecture and a TCA board member, offered his company’s services to design the memorial and held an internal design competition to select the final concept as part of the group’s annual convention that was recently held in Sugar Land. E.E. Reed Construction volunteered to build the memorial. “Our vision is to give others the opportunity to leave a legacy in their community, and we are very proud to have been

a part of such an important project,” said Sugar Land Legacy Foundation President Gene Reed, who is also the owner of E.E. Reed Construction, L.P. and a member of the TCA. More than 10 companies donated their time, talent and services to the memorial. The final value of their donations totals in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. “We are so proud of this park, and we are grateful to have such a beautiful space in our community to honor our veterans and recognize the sacrifices they have made so we can be free,” said Mayor James A. Thompson.

A Facial Redness Called Rosacea

Rosacea is a skin disorder with redness across the face, small visible blood vessels, red bumps, and possibly dry eyes. The red rash is appar ent across the cheeks, forehead, nose, and chin. There is a tendency for this skin condition to flare up for months before going away. The flare may start up again. Certain triggers have been identified that may cause a rosacea flare. These include hot baths, hot foods, spicy food, alcohol, medications called corticosteroids, and sunlight. While there is no cure for rosacea, there are plenty of treatments available that can control the symptoms. To help avoid triggers, the daily use of a sunscreen is recommended and the use of gentle moisturizing cleansers such as Cetaphil. Certain antibiotics like doxycycline (Oracea, Monodox) may be prescribed by a physician to kill the bad bacteria on the skin. Metronidazole gel (MetroGel 1%) can be used on the face to help reduce bumps and lesions that appear on the face. In certain severe cases, isotretinoin (Accutane) may be prescribed. This medication has many side effects and should not be used by pregnant women due to the risk of severe harm to the baby. To help relieve the dry eye sensation associated with rosacea, artificial tears may be used in addition to regular warm compresses.

Director of Budget and Research, showed the task force that the red light camera program is predicted to generate almost $560,000 in fiscal year 2014 from payment of the $75 red light camera fines. Half of the revenue is shared with the state. Sugar Land's portion, roughly $280,000, is put into the general fund to pay for traffic safety program and represents just .4% of the general fund budget. A task force member asked for verification that some cameras were taken out because they weren't generating revenue. Griffith acknowledged that the cameras need to pay for themselves but stressed the change in driver behavior as a bigger reason for the camera removal. Sugar Land currently utilizes red light cameras at four intersections - U.S. Highway 59 at Highway 6, U.S. Highway 90A at Dairy Ashford, Eldridge Road at West Airport Boulevard and Highway 6 at Lexington Boulevard.

Reports state that many card users in a Louisiana store reportedly “bought” as much as they could carry. Cell phone video showed dozens of shopping carts piled high with merchandise. They were abandoned in the

The company providing the infrastructure of the EBT card system reportedly experienced a power outage during a routine maintenance test causing the temporary issue. The glitch was not attributed to the government shutdown. That source of information was intended to call attention to those in this economically strong and vibrant area falling under poverty income classifications. Davis, however, said the EBT cards are regularly used at the Sugar Land location. Reportedly, the emergency plan that can be put in place in case of an electronic failure is a $50 limit on the cards. Here’s hoping that would have been the case in Fort Bend.

Back in June, the Board of Trustees voted to postpone the construction of elementary school #46 in Aliana in order to give the district time to conduct a thorough inventory of the district's schools and facilities and to map out a long range plan for elementary school boundaries. The district hired Jacobs Engineering to conduct a $1.7 million dollar facilities assessment that will conduct a thorough examination of every district building. The Community Dialogue meeting on October 29 will be at Elkins High School. The second meeting will be on October 30 at Travis High School. Both meetings start at 7 p.m.

"We want to build credibility with the data by allowing people to question it." The district's timeline calls for several opportunities for community input. In addition to the two community dialogue meetings in October. two others will be held in December. Two community dialogue meetings will be held on the elementary boundary changes in February. In addition, a comprehensive web survey will be available the first two weeks In December.

Spring Creek Barbeque 4895 Texas 6, Missouri City Cuisine: Barbecue and smoked meats Continuing on my quest for the best barbecue in the

bend, this week I bring you Spring Creek Barbeque. Served cafeteria style, the sliced brisket, black pepper sausage, ribs, beans and coleslaw were sampled. The menu was typical,

offering beef, mild or peppered sausage, chicken, ribs, and surprisingly, pulled pork. Pulled pork is not as readily found in this area. A two-meat dinner plate was $10.95; sandwiches were around $8.95. All the meats sampled had a mild smoky flavor that was pleasing, but short of outstanding. Disappointing was the temperature of the meats, which were not even warm by the time we got to our table. For those who prefer sauce on

their barbeque, the flavor of the sauce is just as important as the flavor of the meat. Their original barbeque sauce was tasty, not too overbearing, but again, not outstanding. The side dishes were okay, not bad, but ordinary. Did I mention the warm rolls? They were melt-inyour-mouth delicious! A server generously strolled around with a basket full, offering as many as your heart desires. Two things stood out with this experience: the fact that

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital first in Fort Bend to use PFO closure As a baby develops in the womb, a hole in its heart provides oxygen-rich blood from the mother. This hole usually closes naturally when the baby is born. However, about 25 percent of the time, it does not close and becomes known as a Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO). Most people do not experience any symptoms with a PFO and grow up without knowing they have one. However, in some instances, a PFO may contribute

to a stroke or a heart attack. Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is the first in Fort Bend County to offer the minimally invasive PFO closure procedure to prevent recurrent strokes and heart attacks. “Most people with PFO go through life and never have a problem,” says Dr. B. Keith Ellis, a board-certified interventional cardiologist and fellowshiptrained, PFO closure expert at Houston Methodist Sugar Land
