THE STAR

She adopted Fort Bend as her home and was determined to make it a better place. What set Bev and her Fort Bend Southwest Star newspaper apart from existing publications was her commitment to the people of Fort Bend and her audacity to hold officials, especially those elected, accountable to this community. Sometimes that mission is long and painful, but more often than not, unbecoming behavior by community representatives

Legacy - It has been just over a year since Beverly Carter embarked on her final journey. Beginning with her days as a teacher at Alief High School, followed by her bold and often brash journey into the newspaper business in then rural Fort Bend County she was a woman who gave voice to those who had none. In short, Bev was a woman who had the guts to hunt bear with a switch.

can be modified by shining a little light of exposure in their direction. Frequently that leaves them cranky, but more often than not improves their behavior. Many times over the years other newspapers and many a political foe tried to put Bev out of business by pushing her advertisers to drop her… never did that work; not in the days of Juanita Jean nor Bev’s Burner. Like it or hate it, the Legacy of Bev Carter and the Star she left behind is the commitment to expose what is lurking under the glossy public relations of the Fort Bend Community. That along with the city council happenings, school board updates, what crime is happening in your area, and of course Chamber of Commerce ribbon cuttings. Southwest Star has been a success because of its unabashed and unapologetic courage to give voice to those in Fort Bend County who had none. FBISD - The Bond- In the coming months voters will be asked to vote on school bonds for FBISD in the millions, millions and millions. These bonds are to build new schools, repair old ones, buy new technology, replace the old and create a total and whole law enforcement agency. Pay close attention in the weeks to come as the Star delineates the different aspects of the FBISD bonds and what it will cost. FOOT FACTS by Dr. Eric Tepper BOARD CERTIFIED PODIATRIST, ACCPPS FOOT NOTES

Maintaining a regular foot care regimen can help stave off foot issues such as ingrown toenails, corns, heel fissures, and foot odor. When to start? The sooner, the better! Wearing properly fitted, comfortable shoes made of breathable materials can prevent many foot issues. Washing the feet daily and making sure they are thoroughly dried can help alleviate the growth of bacteria and fungi and curb foot odor. Daily moisturizing can treat any dryness or cracked skin. Wearing clean socks will protect the feet, wicking away any moisture that feet may otherwise absorb. Keep feet strong by walking to exercise the foot muscles. Even a short, daily walk helps keep the ligaments and tendons of feet flexible. It’s always a good idea to listen to your feet, as they often have lots to tell you, including giving you clues about the rest of your body’s well-being. Bearing in mind how much our feet do for us, the least we can do is to provide them with a comfortable environment, preventive care before problems occur, and professional care when they do. Whether it means a change in footwear or a more medical approach, there is help for your aching feet and lots you can do to make sure your feet stand up to years of wear and tear. Best Ways to Manage Panic Attacks

Panic attacks are best described at sudden periods of extreme fear that lead to severe reactions in the body, when there is no apparent or real danger or harm. Some or all of the following symptoms may oc cur: feelings of impending danger, fast heart beat, sweating, very fast breathing, chills, hot flashes, nausea, headache, stomach cramps, feeling like fainting, and trouble swallowing. Researchers believe panic attacks could be caused by major stress, genetics, or changes in brain patterns. People who have experienced a traumatic event, unexpected changes to one’s lifestyle, or a family history of panic attacks may have a higher likelihood of experiencing attacks than the average person. The best way to help manage panic attacks is by talking with a certi fied and experienced behavior psychologist. There are a few medica tions that may help manage symptoms. SSRIs and SNRIs are classes of antidepressants that are FDA approved to help treat panic disorders. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) as a group are FDA ap proved to help treat panic disorders. They include fluoxetine (Prozac), paroxetine (Paxil), and sertraline (Zoloft). Venlafaxine hydrochloride (Effexor XR) is a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI) that is also FDA-approved to help treat panic disorders.
