In the highly contested race for Fort Bend County Sheriff Precinct 4 Constable Troy Nehls trounced all three of his opponents.

The 2012 race for sheriff began less than a month after the current sitting sheriff, Milton Wright, took office in 2009. At a political breakfast for Andy Meyers that January morning, Wright and Meyers announced that since Wright intended to retire at the end of 2012, his chief deputy Craig

Brady, would be seeking the Republican nomination for the term beginning January 1, 2013.

The race began in earnest a couple of years later in 2011 when former police chief/ businessman John Minchew entered the race. Shortly after, he was followed by retired Texas Trooper and Richmond Police administrator Billy Frank Teague.

After that, Precinct 4 Constable Troy Nehls formed an exploratory committee to test the feasibility of his run for the office NAILED, continued on page 9

The Wessendorff Park Project, as it is known, has been made possible by a grant from the Henderson-Wessendorff Foundation. Richmond city spokesman Master Sergeant Lowell Neinast said the facilities will be developed in two phases.

He said, “Phase I will include landscaping and a gazebo in the park area between the Richmond Police Department and Morton Cemetery and is anticipated to be completed by September of this year.

Owe the county money?

County to cross out prospective contractors

If you intend to do business with Fort Bend County, here’s a heads up. As a vendor of services, professional and otherwise, any outstanding tax or fee indebtedness owed to the county in all likelihood will prohibit you from being awarded a bid or contract.

In one of its latest actions, the Fort Bend County Commissioners approved a policy involving contracting with a person indebted to it.

Fort Bend County currently has a policy similar to it, said a county official, and it has to do with using federal funds. The county looks into making sure that its contractors have met their obligations in relation to taxes and fees owed to the federal

government. Otherwise, Fort Bend County cannot award them the contract, said the official.

At the county level, now that this policy is in place, road materials, fuel, office supplies, “whatever we buy before we award the contract, we check the status of that vendor’s tax payments to the county, (and) we make sure they are not indebted to the county before we award them,” said Gilbert Jalomo of the county’s purchasing department.

Fort Bend County’s tax office is reported to have been working on the matter and it helped to develop a form. So, when a bid from a prospective contractor is submitted, their information will be reviewed. Jalomo said that the county will check only those bidding that have the potential to be awarded the bid.

That statement, according to Jassma, is where Glenn may have made his biggest mistake.

Bull’s eye on Target cheating shoppers

The two men that attempted to use stolen credit cards put a target on their backs. Sugar Land police are looking for the men who are believed to have stolen credit cards from a fitness center then used them at a nearby department store.

On May 8, about 10 pm., two men entered the Target store in the 16300 Southwest Freeway, and attempted to use the cards.

According to Sugar Land police spokesman Doug Adolph, the credit cards were stolen earlier that evening from a van parked outside 24 Hour Fitness, just an exit away on the freeway.

Adolph said a man who was at the fitness center told police that someone broke into his locker and took his keys, followed by a burglary of vehicle in the fitness center parking lot in which his wallet was stolen. The credit cards the crooks attempted to use were the same cards that had been stolen from inside the locked van.

Police have reviewed the surveillance video at Target, and 24 Hour Fitness, and both show the same two men enter the gym at 9:15 p.m. then leave the gym at 9:30 p.m. Adolph said the surveillance video at the fitness BULL’S EYE, continued on page 9

Reward offered in IBC bank robbery

Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers has issued an alert for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects responsible for the IBC bank robbery inside the Kroger store in the 11500 block of Highway 6 South near Sugar Land.

Sheriff’s spokesman Bob Haenel said, “Fort Bend County Crimes Stoppers, Inc. will pay up to $5,000 for information leading

to the arrest and conviction of the subject involved in the robbery".

This robbery occurred at 11:45 am, Saturday morning, May 26.

Haenel said deputies responded to the bank. He said about 11:30, a man walked up to the counter at the bank, handed the teller a note demanding cash, threatening her with a bomb. However, no bomb nor weapon was ever displayed, yet the fear of imminent bodily injury was still present.

According to Haenel, “The

teller stuffed some money into envelopes. At that time, the robber told the teller to put the envelopes inside a box which was located behind the counter.

The teller complied and the subject took the box and left the store on foot”.

No physical injuries were reported during the robbery.

Thank You

Can’t buy me love, and apparently not a political race either We have watched with amusement as soon-to-be-former Chief Deputy Craig Brady spent over half a million dollars and four years in an attempt to get elected sheriff of Fort Bend County.

This is seven times the amount of money ever spent on a political race in Fort Bend County.

He got 34.48% of the primary vote.

His opponent, Pct. 4 Constable Troy Nehls, got 54.38% which isn’t shabby considering he couldn’t openly campaign until 4 1/2 months earlier, and then only if a November, 2011 constitutional amendment passed allowing him and other officeholders to announce in January.

Not only did Craig Brady spend 1/2 million dollars to get elected to a job that paid less than his current job, he solicited and took money from questionable sources, although to be fair some rather loyal upstanding citizens also contributed big bucks in the waning days of the campaign. One wonders what they were thinking, when for example, in his last contributions filing, we learn that Gary Aber gave him $500, former Precinct 3 commissioner candidate Michael Baldwin contributed $2,100, and Marsha Bielstein, wife of Judge Sandy Bielstein, gave him $2,500.

His father, Dr. Kenneth Brady, gave him another $5,000, and Jamal Daniel, a Fulshear area developer, who offices in Houston, gave him $20,000.

Fall Creek Plaza 2, LP contributed $1,400, (that’s a business and it’s still illegal to accept contributions from those in Texas. I guess I’m going to have to complain to the Texas Ethic Commission about this one). Gutierrez Auto Parts threw in $3,000, (another business, another complaint to the TECohh I just love to pour over campaign filings).

EA McCune gave $500, Jack Molho gave $500 (I wonder if Donna knows?), Todd Richey contributed $1,500, Reuben Stafford shelled out $1,000, and R.H. Stevens, Jr. gave $500. James Winne contributed $2,500, and David Vogelsang ponied up $5,000.

Brady’s big bucks didn’t translate into big votes and on Wednesday after the election, he announced that he was going to throw his support to the Democratic candidate.

Brady has previously been a Republican precinct chair but didn’t run again. Maybe he was afraid he would lose that race also. Wags have said “Big deal. He’s taking 10 votes to the

Democratic candidate.”

It’s not fair to make fun of him for losing but so many people have come forward and told of how he had bullied them for the past four years. Those chickens have come home to roost as someone said he was joining the POO party, as in Political Opportunist Organization.

There were many mistakes his campaign made, not the least of which was the fact that he had no experienced and reliable campaign manager. Some of his volunteers got on Facebook on an almost daily basis and although the sheriff’s department has rules against that sort of thing, they aired their dirty laundry in public, calling each other disloyal and snakes.

In addition, Brady’s family may have helped him with money but some of their campaign efforts had the opposite effect. One citizen called me and said she had Nehls’ signs in her yard when a Craig Brady relative knocked on her door and demanded she take them down as “this is my son’s territory!” the homeowner was told.

Brady fired a couple of popular bailiffs on flimsy reasons not long before the vote. In fact, it was just enough time for the exemployees to mount opposition among their neighbors, relatives, and friends.

Nine years ago after I revealed a lot of embarrassing things about the sheriff’s department and its chief deputy, Craig Brady accused us of lying. He had extricated his own sons from some legal concerns and we chastised him for interfering and using his police power. He had his then 17-year-old son sue us as the burden of proof was easier for the son, Brady being a public figure and all.

We eventually lost that suit although no one ever proved that we lied. The case is under appeal. We didn’t lie then and we haven’t lied since.

When you are running for sheriff, you don’t have the largest circulated newspaper sued, particularly if you have questionable actions that can be written about.

Particularly if you have bullied your way through life.

It was offered to me to have the suit dropped if I fired LeaAnne Klentzman. You see, LeaAnne had worked at the sheriff’s department for many years. She even had run for sheriff. Milton Wright’s first official act (after hiring Craig Brady to really run the sheriff’s department) was to fire LeaAnne Klentzman. After that, few women were hired or promoted. To say the Fort Bend

County Sheriff’s department had a war on women was an understatement.

Those old boys haven’t learned that hiring women means you won’t have to do even half the work.

Sheriff Wright even took to the street to campaign for his chief deputy. He worked at the polls at the main Fort Bend County Library in Richmond. Of course to say he worked was an understatement. He spent the entire day sitting under a shade tree and as far as we can tell, didn’t contact one voter. But it was just as well. He couldn’t find anyone to play dominos with him anyway.

Of course, the old boys over at the sheriff’s department aren’t through jerking Fort Bend County around. And now that Brady has lost, he, like Hitler flooding the subway tunnels in the closing days of WWII and killing his own people, is trying to do that to the taxpayers of Fort Bend County.

Brady and bunch are trying to figure out a way to put everyone on civil service, including himself, so he can’t be “fired.” Can you imagine Nehls having to run a sheriff’s department with Craig Brady still around?

So Craig et al is trying to figure a way to promote every detective to sergeant, meaning they will have to promote every lieutenant to what? General?

What it really means is a substantial raise for all his buddies and a kick in the rear for Fort Bend taxpayers.

The only ones standing in the way of all this are the commissioners and County Attorney Roy Cordes. Since I don’t think they know what they are doing about civil service and are not very knowledgeable about the subject, they’ll probably get away with it. Much like they got away with the $200,000 “anonymous” donation to the sheriff’s department.

Jugheads!

Yep, they need some women.

They may have to put up with a lot of yapping, but things will run smoother, faster, more legal, and cheaper. Ever tried to feed a family of four on $15 per week?

Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council recognizes Fort Bend volunteers for their contributions Girl Scouts of San Jacinto Council (GSSJC) recently honored Fort Bend volunteer Jackie Powell as well as Sienna Plantation, and Texas Treasures Service Unit for their contributions to Girl Scouting.

Powell received the Appreciation Pin, a national award given to a candidate that has provided outstanding service to a geographic area or program delivery audience in a way that furthers the Council’s goals. She received the award for accepting several volunteer assignments, serving as site manager for Sunshine Service Unit Weekend and serving as chair of the service unit’s Gold Award committee.

Can a repair facility save me from paying my deductible?

An honest repair shop will always say “no” to saving deductibles. Your insurance policy is a contract between you and your insurance carrier. It basically says that if Chuck Charlton you have a collision loss, you are responsible for the first portion of repairs (your deductible) and the insurance company will pay the rest. If the final repair cost is less, you’re still responsible for the predetermined deductible amount. Any reduction should correctly go back to the insurance company. There are legitimate ways to reduce your cost. Is there any help for ringing in the ears?

The Better Hearing Institute has joined the American Tinnitus Association in increasing awareness in using Terry Snook hearing aids as a treatment to reduce AuD, FAAA tinnitus or ringing in the ears.

Tinnitus is described as the perception of sound that has no external source. Tinnitus can be intermittent or constant. It can be in both ears or only one ear.

Tinnitus sufferers describe the sounds as ringing, buzzing, humming, or cricket like sounds. Exposure to loud noise is the most common cause of tinnitus.

Tinnitus is usually associated with hearing loss. There is no know cure for tinnitus but by wearing hearing aids amplification of background sounds reduce the prominence of the tinnitus. Taking the focus off of the tinnitus seems to give most tinnitus sufferers some relief.

“What are the Benefits of Nitrogen in Tires” Compressed nitrogen has long been used to inflate the tires of race cars and aircraft. Regular air is approximately 78 percent nitrogen, 21 percent oxygen and 1 percent water vapor. The oxygen and water vapor can degrade tires and wheels, shortening tire life. Nitrogen inflation is now available from many commercial and passenger car dealers.

David Alexander Slower Inflation Pressure Loss - A tire inflated with Service Director regular compressed air will lose about one and a half to two psi of pressure per month. Most of the pressure loss is due to oxygen molecules permeating through the tire rubber. Replacing the air with 95 to 98 percent nitrogen reduces the pressure loss to less than one-half psi per month. Since many drivers do not regularly check their air pressure, nitrogen inflation will allow their tires to maintain proper inflation levels longer. The major benefit of properly inflated tires is optimum Oxygen can cause oxidation of tire rubber and corrosion of metal and alloy wheels. The water vapor in air can accelerate these processes, especially under pressure like the compressed air in a tire.

The corrosive effects of both oxygen and water vapor are multiplied when a tire overheats due to under-inflation. Nitrogen is an inert gas and will not cause corrosion or rust. Nitrogen also will not degrade the seals in air valves, further preventing pressure loss.

Improved Tire Life - Using nitrogen to pressurize tires has benefits over regular air for tire longevity. The greatest threats to tire life are heat and uneven tread wear. Both of these result from improper tire pressure; using nitrogen will maintain a more even tire pressure over the life of a tire.

Also, the rubber inner lining of a tire will degrade over time in an air environment. As the rubber lining degrades, air pressure will be lost faster, accelerating the effects of under-pressurization.

Nitrogen will not cause the inner lining of a tire to degrade, extending its useful life. According to the Innovative Balancing website, inflating tires with nitrogen can extend tire life up to 25 percent.

EVANS Sara Lynn Evans, age 49, of Sugar Land TX passed away unexpectedly at home on May 26, 2012.

Sara was born August 4, 1962 in Roswell, NM to Ann and Clyde Roach. She is survived by immediate family, Keith (K.C) Evans; their daughters Alexis Evans, and Shelby Evans; sisters Cathy Burris, Linda Major, Brenda White, and Pamela Mackey; brother David Buchanan; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews; and her loving parents Clyde & Ann Roach of White Rock, NM. Sara is preceded in death by her sister Beverly Adams-Mattson.

Sara was born in Roswell, NM and moved to Los Alamos, NM with her parents and family when she was seven. She grew up in Los Alamos, building lifelong friendships from elementary through high school.

Sara attended New Mexico State University before moving to Dallas in the mid 80’s to pursue her dreams. In 1987 Sara broke her leg during a water ski run that had started out just like any of the hundreds she had ripped through before.

Her accident led to a discovery of Ewings Sarcoma and a large tumor just above her knee. A year of intense chemotherapy, surgeries, and radiation treatments followed. While home in Los Alamos taking a break between treatments in Dallas, she went to lunch with Keith Evans, a sales rep at IBM and former middle school sweetheart. KC never went back to work that day and they were married the following year on July 22, 1989 at Holy Faith church in Santa Fe, NM. They had an incredible week with friends and family before the wedding followed by a romantic honeymoon cruise to the U.S. Virgin Islands. Sara gave birth to their first child, Alexis, on November 24, 1991 while on crutches and with a broken metal rod in her leg. After enduring 20-something surgeries on the sick leg over many years, Sara with KC and toddler Alexis at her side, decided it was time to remove the leg that had been trying to dominate her life. A team led by the Chief of Orthopedic Oncology at the National Cancer Institute in Washington D.C performed the surgery just a few weeks after Mother’s Day in 1993.

Sara continued to have to fight through chronic nerve pain every single day of her life from then on. She delivered their second baby, Shelby, on November 23, 1994 after making it through the entire pregnancy on one leg. Sara continued to have the balance and grace from her early years of dance as she raised their two young girls and supported KC in the highs and lows of his sales career.

Sara made a beautiful home, cooked, catered, transported, and sometimes may have teleported to handle family obligations all the while with a sparkle in her beautiful blue eyes and warmth from her smile that made you feel

important and loved. She used her crutches and prosthetics as an enabler rather than a disability. In August of 1996 the family moved to Houston, TX, settling in Sugar Land the following year to raise their children.

Sara dedicated her life to raising her children. While living in Santa Fe, she also worked in advertising and found time to volunteer on Pajarito Mountain, clearing and stacking wood to improve the ski terrain. She remained in contact with childhood friends Lori Poe-Hinojosa, Julie MontagueTherrien, and Kathryn TaylorLloyd whom she loved like her sisters. Sharon Kemmerer and Sara became friends in Sugar Land, seemingly being friends since birth. Sara & KC loved and enlisted help for spiritual and lifelong guidance of Alexis from her god-parents Donna Garcia and Gary Shelton; and for Shelby from her godparents Sara’s sister Pam and her husband Jerome Mackey. Sara had a great love of softball, following her girls on adventures over hundreds of miles looking for the toughest competition in Texas. Always the outdoor girl, she loved skiing and learned to use outriggers to keep that fire burning. She loved camping and fishing with her family throughout her life. Friend Lori Poe remembers a motor home vacation as teens through Canada as the trip of a lifetime.

Alexis and Shelby learned to fish from their Grandpa Clyde and their mom, while Sara’s mother Ann kept the camp alive and provided much needed backup plans for the occasional time “they all got away”.

Sara volunteered at the girls’ schools helping from the class room to the choir room to the softball fields. Sara also volunteered to help patients and families at Houston’s worldrenowned Amputee & Prosthetic center that were facing the lifechanging event of an amputation.

The look on her patient’s faces was indescribable as she gave them hope for what the future holds and offered herself to them for emotional support. Although the meetings were emotionally draining, the lives she was helping kept her giving.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday June 5, 2012, 4:00 pm at Fishers of Men Church in Sugar Land. Another service to celebrate Sara’s life will take place in Los Alamos, New Mexico, the third week of July, 2012.

In keeping with Sara’s always unselfish and giving values, the family is donating Sara’s most recent and advanced prosthesis to help change the life of someone else who otherwise could not walk.

Dear Editor, I read with interest the letter from “Name withheld by request” in the May 16 issue and the articles in the May 23 issue, and feel that a response is in order. The Board of Directors of the Fort Bend Central Appraisal District (CAD) is committed to providing the best possible service to Fort Bend County property owners.

Toward that goal, every visitor to the Fort Bend CAD office is asked to complete a Property Owner’s Survey rating the service received in a wide range of categories. The results of these surveys are compiled and carefully reviewed at each monthly Board Meeting. This information is a matter of public record. These surveys consistently show favorable ratings of approximately 90% in all categories.

The Board takes seriously the 10% of surveys expressing unfavorable opinions. The reasons arevevaluated and improvements are sought where possible. Any property owner can request a telephone call to discuss concerns, and that call will be made. In

addition, any property owner can address the Board at the beginning of each Board Meeting (held the third Monday of each month at 5:15 P.M.).

The Board cannot, by law, be involved in setting appraisal values. That is the job of the Fort Bend CAD staff who derive property values based on actual sales, regardless of whether they are increasing or decreasing and following nationwide appraisal methods. The Texas Property Code specifies the steps available to all property owners in resolving appraisal value disagreements: starting with an Informal discussion with the Fort Bend CAD staff, formal Protest hearing before the Appraisal Review Board (an independent, impartial group of citizens appointed by the Administrative District Judge), an appeal to an independent arbitrator appointed by the Texas Comptroller, and finally an appeal to the State District Court.

The Fort Bend CAD does not set tax rates (this is done by the taxing entities governing body) nor does it collect taxes. This is done by a separate organization, the Fort Bend County Tax

Assessor/Collector’s office and others which are not involved in the appraisal process.

The Texas Comptroller’s office conducts audits of the Fort Bend CAD, comparing sales price to appraised value and verifying the districts procedures and processes. Poor performance

Fort Bend Christian Academy football place kicker Andrew Ferguson has signed a letter of intent to play football at NCAA Division III Trinity University in San Antonio. Ferguson scored 81 points last fall, connecting on 42 extra points and a perfect 13 out of 13 field goals. DiGeorge Syndrome Symptom Treatments

The genetic condition, DiGeorge syndrome, is caused by a chromo­ some 22 abnormality which is characterized by inadequate development of different parts of the body. Individuals with this condition typically experience abnormalities of the heart, underdevelopment of the thymus, low calcium due to underdevelopment of the parathyroid gland, and behavioral conditions. The thymus normally works in the development of T cells, which are essential to the function of the immune system.

Although there is currently no cure available for DiGeorge syndrome, treatments are available for associated abnormalities.

Surgical procedures may be needed to correct heart defects. Signs of low calcium in infants may include muscle jerking. Infants with low levels of calcium may be treated with calcium gluconate.

Routine vaccinations are important, as underdevelopment of the thymus gland can contribute to an increased risk for infections. If a behavioral condition such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) develops, treatments for the specific con­dition may be prescribed. Methyphenidate (Concerta, Ritalin) is a stimu­lant that works to increase the amounts of the neurotransmitters dopam­ine and norepinephrine. Atomoxetine (Strattera) is nonstimulant that works to increase norepinephrine.

Boy Scout Troop 1424, chartered to New Hope Lutheran Church, Missouri City, is pleased to announce that Travis Cotton Gore was officially awarded the rank of Eagle Scout by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America at an Eagle Court of Honor held on May 20, 2012 at New Hope Lutheran.

He joined Cub Scout Pack 1030 at age six. Pack 1030 was merged into Pack 282 at Palmer Elementary where Travis moved up to and completed Webelos, earning his Arrow of Light in 2006. He joined Troop 1424 in 2007 and served in a number of leadership positions culminating in his recent election as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. He will serve as Senior Patrol Leader beginning this Fall.

Travis has been an active member of Troop 1424 participating in numerous summer and winter camps, patrol campouts, and service projects. Brazos Bend Elementary School third-grade student, Victor Taylor II, was accepted to the Children’s Museum of Houston’s 20122013 Kids’ Committee.

He was surprised with the announcement during his school’s third-grade awards program on May 29.

The Kids’ Committee is comprised of 25 children, aged 8 to 12, who are dedicated to helping the museum be a better place for children.

As a committee member, Victor will help provide a kid’s perspective for the museum on everything from exhibit development to programming.

This position will work closely with Hispanic and low-income students interested in pursuing careers in the STEM disciplines. The STEM Success Project will be responsible for increasing the number of Hispanic and other low-income students who will attain STEM degrees by addressing academic preparation and success in STEM fields through institutional change in STEM academic, and support services.

This position requires a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline, education or related field and two (2) years of related work experience. Must be able to communicate in Spanish.

Sugar Land Superstar competition begins June 9 at Town Square The first round of Sugar Land Superstar – Sugar Land’s American Idol-like competition – will take place on Saturday, June 9 at 7 p.m. in the Plaza of Sugar Land Town Square.

A previously selected group of talented singers ages 14+ will perform live in the Plaza, and ultimately five will be named finalists by a group of local, celebrity judges.

The five finalists from round one, along with five to be named in the second round

of competition on July 7, will advance to the live Sugar Land Superstar Finale on August 11.

Erica Marks, Sugar Land Superstar 2011, will kick off the evening with a concert at 7 p.m.

This event is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs to the Plaza.

Winning the District 26 Texas State Representative primary election by 2,000 votes is both encouraging and humbling. Our team of volunteers extended themselves beyond our fondest dreams.

‘Mattress Mack’ to be the guest speaker for Chamber’s June 8 business luncheon Jim McIngvale built a Houston-based furniture empire on a foundation of innovative concepts and marketing savvy.

On June 8, the Gallery Furniture owner, known as “Mattress Mack,” will share some of his insight as the guest speaker for the Central Fort Bend Chamber Alliance’s Business Luncheon. The luncheon, which is hosted

by the Chamber’s Young Professionals Division, is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Safari Texas Ranch at 11627 FM 1464 in Richmond.

Join the Literacy Council on Sunday, June 10 from 2-4 p.m. at Painting with a Twist in Sugar Land for a fun, relaxing and philanthropic Sunday afternoon as we “Paint Between the Wines.”

They will be painting a wine themed painting that will complement any area needing that extra artists’ touch in your home. Refreshments and beverages will be served, and guests are invited to bring their favorite “painting” beverage.
