ESTIMATES

Held earlier this month at Sugar Land’s Telfair community, the 6th annual TelfairLife Charity of Your Choice Walk drew 414 walkers and raised more than $17,805 to benefit 12 Fort Bend charities. Several award winners were recognized at the end of the Walk, including Child Advocates, which won the Charity Challenge for the charity with the most registered walkers. With 150 walkers, Child Advocates received a $1,000 cash prize in addition to 100% of registration fees paid by all of its walkers. Blessed Be Hope for Three won the second-place award of $750, with 49 registered walkers. The third-place award for $250 went to the Fort Bend ISD Education Foundation, which had 40 walkers. Child Advocates also won the Team Challenge prize of $1,000 with its “No Excuse for Child Abuse” team, which had 126 walkers.

Four individual walkers each received $500 Walker Challenge awards for their charities. These awards went to the individuals who raised the most money for the charities of their choice. Darla Farmer raised $923 for Blessed Be Hope for Three, and Cynthia Barratt raised $550 for Child Advocates. Josefina Porto Morado raised $235 for NAMI Fort Bend, and Jeff Anderson raised $100 for Fort Bend Habitat for Humanity. With this year’s total donations, the Charity of Your Choice Walk has raised more than $300,000 for Fort Bend charities since it began in 2008. “Since the TelfairLife Charity of Your Choice Walk began, our incredible walkers and volunteers have made significant contributions to the quality of life in Fort Bend County, especially for many of our youngest and most vulnerable community members served by our participating charities,” said

Managing Jet Lag While You Travel

See us online www.FortBendStar.com

Jet lag is often experienced when many time zones are crossed by plane in a relatively short amount of time. Jet lag causes the body’s internal clock to be disrupted. For example, days and nights may be confused and reversed after traveling a long distance. Symptoms of jet lag include feeling sleepy during the day, an inability to fall asleep, stomach cramps, sore muscles, and feeling sick throughout the day. Those who cross two or more time zones may experience jet lag to a greater extent than the average person. During traveling, it is important to drink plenty of water and avoid caffeinated beverages as it can further affect sleep. Researchers indicate that symptoms of jet lag usually start a day after traveling then fade. Because it usually passes, there is no treatment for jet lag. Medications may be prescribed that can help a person sleep during traveling and enjoy the final destination without being too tired. Nonbenzodiazepine and benzodiazepine medications may be prescribed to help a person regulate the sleep schedule during the plane ride and during the first few nights of the trip. Examples of nonbenzodiazepines include zolpidem (Ambien), eszopiclone (Lunesta), and zaleplon (Sonata). Benzodiazepines like triazolam (Halcion) should be taken for a shorter amount of time.

You see it correct folks, the Fort Bend Foodie is now the Fort Bend Fork. In an effort to spruce up for spring and keep it fresh, we updated the name. The focus is still the same bringing you handy recipes, upto-date restaurant reviews, and food-related events and issues around the bend. Summer is upon us, which

often means serving a large group as family and friends gather to enjoy the sunshine. Here is one of my favorite “goto” recipes, an easy casserole sure to please everybody. CHICKEN & WILD RICE CASSEROLE • 8 to 10 slices bacon • 10 to 12 chicken breast halves or thighs

Child Advocates of Fort Bend won two awards at the TelfairLife Charity of Your Choice Walk, including top team. From left: Master of Ceremonies Jacquie Chaumette; Vickie Looney, Brian Covault, Ruthanne Mefford and Brigit Engleman of Child Advocates; and TelfairLife Coordinator Maureen Murray at far right. Maureen Murray, TelfairLife coordinator. “The more this annual event succeeds, the more Fort Bend benefits.” In addition to the charities named above, other charities benefiting from this year’s Charity of Your Choice Walk • 2 boxes brown & wild rice with seasoning packets • 2 boxes whole grain & wild rice (with seasoning packet) • 1 packet onion soup mix • 1 can cream of mushroom soup, 2 cans if you like it creamier • 1 lg. can mushrooms with liquid • 2 soup cans water 1. Line bottom of 13 X 9 casserole dish with bacon to cover. 2. Spread rice from boxes evenly over the bacon, but not the seasoning packet. 3. Layer chicken pieces evenly over rice.

included The Arc of Fort Bend, Brazos Guardianship Services, East Fort Bend Human Needs Ministry, Literacy Council of Fort Bend County, Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels, Second Mile Mission Center, and Fort Bend Rainbow Room. 4. Sprinkle seasoning packets from rice evenly over chicken along with the onion soup mix. 5. Spoon cream of mushroom soup evenly over chicken & seasonings. 6. Residents asked to weigh in on potential plans for Gannoway Park The City of Sugar Land will hold a community meeting on June 2, from 6-7:30 p.m., at the Imperial Park Recreation Center, 234 Matlage Way, to discuss possible plans for Gannoway Lake Park.

The 70-acre community park is located near the intersection of Voss and Burney Roads along Oyster Creek and could provide opportunities for passive, natureoriented recreation. The property's potential

connection to a network of hike and bike trails, its proximity to several residential developments and the abundance of natural features on the property could facilitate activities such as hiking, bird watching, fishing and canoeing. Area residents are encouraged to attend the public meeting, learn about potential plans for the park and provide input.

The project is currently included in the City's Parks, Recreation and Open Space Master Plan as potential parkland. A conceptual plan for the property is being developed for planning purposes. Feedback from this process will be presented to City Council in the future, and funding for the project will be discussed.
