Elkins HS staffers save co-worker and unborn baby's life By Betsy Dolan
It was the day after Valentine's Day, and Erica Nigrelli's heart was full. She was living her dream: teaching, coaching and just four weeks away from the birth of her first child with husband and fellow Elkins High School teacher, Nathan. In an instant, it all changed. "Some students said, 'Your wife is hurt' and I went running into the classroom and she was laying on the floor," Nathan recalled. "She wasn't breathing and I just froze." What happened next would later be called a miracle by Erica's family. With two lives hanging in the balance, three women, also Elkin's employees, converged in the classroom, each possessing a unique skill that would ultimately save mother and child. Athletic trainer and Fort Bend ISD CPR educator, June Tomlin heard about Erica's collapse

Deadline draws near to appeal Fort Bend property tax appraisals By Elsa Maxey
A well known consultant representing taxpayers on property tax appraisals lists “the government needs the money more than I do” as the top reason for not challenging an appraisal.
Whether you’re going to do it or not is up to you, but the deadline to file a protest in Fort Bend County with the Fort Bend County Appraisal District is at the end of the month. Keep in mind that there’s the Memorial Day holiday on Monday, May
US 90A at SH 99 intersection closure to install bridge beams Scheduled to begin on Friday, May 31, 2013 the intersection of US 90A at SH 99 will undergo a total closure so that the contractor constructing the toll road can set bridge beams over the intersection. The closure will impact the traveling public for three (3) consecutive weekends, as well as some weekday overnight closures. The
following is the schedule for the intersection closures: Weekend closures • Friday, May 31 at 8:00 pm through Monday, June 3rd at 5:00 am • Friday, June 7 at 8:00 pm through Monday, June 10th at 5:00 am CLOSURE, continued on page 7

As for the government needing the money, it’s been said that if your house is worth $150,000 and the assessed value goes up by 10 percent, that would mean a $450 increase in property taxes. Imagine what else the local government entities could do if everyone contributed on the average an extra $450 in property taxes this upcoming year! In other cases, one could argue along the same lines if an assessment remained the same and the property tax rates of the taxing entities, such as a city, municipal utility district, school district, etc., went up instead. That is what local taxing bodies do in this area. To fund x, y, and/ or z, a property tax rate goes up. But, before that, there are public hearings. DEADLINE, continued on page 10
Boy drowns at Greatwood pool party By Betsy Dolan
A kindergarten student at Dickinson Elementary School drowned in a Greatwood community pool on Friday, May 19 during a private birthday party. Jaden Nwokedi, who would have turned six next month, was found unconscious in the shallow end of the pool at Winding Brook Drive and Shadow Bend. A
lifeguard was on duty at the time. The Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office said Nwokedi's lips were blue when he was pulled out of the water and the lifeguard began CPR. A nurse who was attending the party helped the lifeguard until rescue crews arrived. Nwokedi was transported by LifeFlight to Memorial Hermann Medical Center with rescue crews performing CPR on the
boy the entire time. Nwokedi was pronounced dead at the hospital. A candlelight vigil was held for him in Greatwood on Sunday night. Nwokedi had played two seasons of tee-ball at Rosenberg National Little League. The league will plant a tree in his honor on May 30 at 7 p.m. at Seabourne Creek Sports Complex. Flags will also fly at half-staff during all All Star Games played at RNLL in June and July. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 25 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Rosenberg.
Economic development successes at heart of Missouri City's State of the City By Betsy Dolan
Strategic location, a highly educated workforce and diverse population have helped make Missouri City's economic developments efforts stand out, according to Mayor Allen Owen who addressed a large crowd at the State of the City address held at Quail Valley Town Center on May 15.
"Seeing us lower the tax burden on the homeowner by increasing business growth is what we've been successful in doing," Owen said. Owen touted the city's double digit increase in commercial growth over the past five years. He attributed it to the success of public/private partnerships in attracting several new companies including Niagara Bottling, the

Priscilla Perez, 22, both of Houston, were arrested after they were found in the proximity of several alarm calls. wrote that Rodney Vannerson had been arrested for stealing political signs. That was partly untrue. He was NOT arrested and thrown in jail. He was caught in the act and issued a citation. There is a reason these mistakes happened. I trusted some media professionals and didn’t bother to check what they told me. I thought that since they were pros, they would have the facts, at least about such important things as the aforementioned boners. So I am going to have to rethink my belief that I can continue my column while sitting at home and eschewing public functions. Missouri City Spikes win 9U tourney in Tomball The boys from Spikes baseball continue to roll with an impressive tournament win at the Texas Prospects Classic in Tomball, Texas. After a 1-1 pool record, the boys came out on Sunday and beat the Banditos White 14-4, Pro-way Colt 45's 11-3 and avenged their Saturday loss in huge fashion by beating the Texas Royals from Humble 25-7.

Haute Wheels and Mobile Bistro’s Have you ever seen a parking lot filled with funky food trucks and lines of hungry people waiting their turn to order up? These aren’t your everyday taco trucks you see hovering around construction sites. They are fancy, funky, fresh, and everything in between, mini-restaurants on wheels and the latest craze among the foodie crowd. A festival celebrates these mobile bistro’s called Haute Wheels Houston Food Truck Festival. Food trucks cluster together on a city block or parking lot offering items ranging from fish tacos to quiche, all types of cuisine, and chocolate and desserts in every way you could imagine. The Mighty Cone, for example, serves items like fried shrimp with a unique sesame oyster sauce in a large cardboard cone to make it easier to hold and eat if you must.

Fort Bend ISD’s Fine Arts Department is accepting donations of used band instruments from the public. Community members can drop off their used band instruments at the FBISD Administration Building, 16431 Lexington Blvd., Sugar Land, during regular business hours 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Donations will be accepted for the remainder of the school year and throughout the summer.
Former band members are encouraged to check their attics, closets and storage units for instruments to donate, which will help ensure current students have the band equipment they need to be successful. Donated instruments will assist students, who otherwise might not be able to afford a band instrument, a chance to participate in beginning band programs across the district.
Open auditions for 2013 Sugar Land Superstar set for Wednesday, May 22 Sugar Land’s American Idollike competition, Sugar Land Superstar, is kicking off a new summer of local talent with open auditions on Wednesday, May 22 from 5 – 7 p.m. in the Plaza of Sugar Land Town Square. The 2013 Sugar Land Superstar will win a prize package features items from Town Square retailers and the opportunity to perform live at future events.
All participants should be prepared to sing for 60 to 90 seconds without musical accompaniment. Bank robber nabbed on several counts By LeaAnne Klentzman
Friday morning, May 17, shortly before 9 a.m., a representative from Whitney Bank in Brazos Town Center called Rosenberg Police and reported a bank robbery. According to officials, a white man, 40-60 years of age, with long slicked back hair, waked into the bank, threatened bank personnel with a knife, and demanded money. He was able to walk out and away from the bank with an undisclosed amount on money. He is further described as weighing 130-150 pounds, and at the time of the robbery he was wearing sunglasses and a bright yellow polo style shirt and blue jeans. No suspect vehicle was available and police were unable to find him.
The following Monday morning, Rosenberg Police got a break in the case when Bret Disiere attempted to rob a Conroe area bank, also with a knife. According to reports, in the Montgomery County case, Disiere hopped the counter wielded his knife and demanded money. Unbeknownst to Disiere, a Montgomery County deputy sheriff was working an extra job at the bank he decided to loot. The deputy that Disiere failed to see slipped outside and nabbed the knife wielding bank robber without further incident. Brett Disiere was arrested for the robbery he was caught committing in Conroe, on a warrant for the robbery he committed in Rosenberg, as well as, charges that stem out of Mississippi.

Dandruff: Fighting the Flakes
Dandruff is a skin condition in which there is itching and flaking of the scalp. The itching from dandruff may be so intense that the scalp can become red or swollen. The flaking can be more visible on darker hair and clothing, which can be embarrassing for some. However, dandruff is a very common condition. Fortunately it is not contagious. Some potential causes of dandruff include dry scalp, excess oil production on the scalp, infrequent shampooing, and the scalp’s reactions to hair products. A fungi organism naturally found on scalps, Malassezia, can also cause dandruff, if the fungus grows out of control. Skin disorders such as psoriasis and eczema can also be associated with dandruff. If a physician suspects the cause of the dandruff is fungal, the anti fungal shampoo ketoconazole (Nizoral) can be prescribed. It is also avail able over-the-counter (OTC) in a lower strength. Selenium sulfide (Selsun Blue, Tersi Foam), also OTC or prescription depending on the strength, can help to reduce flaking The OTC shampoos Head and Shoulders and Selson Salon contain zinc pyrithione, which can also kill fungi and reduce flaking. Another option to reduce dandruff flakes is coal tar (Neutrogena T-gel, Ionil-T). More severe cases of dandruff may be prescribed cilopirox shampoo (Loprox).

Saturday night, about 10pm, Sugar Land Police responded to a dispute involving weapons at the Gatti Town Pizza and Arcade in the 3400 block of State Hwy 6 South. Used to be that theft in Texas could get you hanged. If ever there was a crime, this and stealing from Girl Scouts should be on the top of the list. Sheriff’s spokesman Bob Haenel said, “At about 6:40 p.m. Sunday, May 12, Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to the New Territory subdivision baseball fields located at 1200 Walker School Road in regard to a burglary.” Based on surveillance video there are likely as many as four suspects who forced their way into the concession stand at the baseball fields about 10:15 p.m. Saturday, May 11. According to Haenel, the suspects climbed a fence to gain access to the second floor roof of the concession stand, then they broke a second floor window to gain entry. Haenel said, “The video shows one suspect with a t-shirt wrapped around his head approaching a cash box. He opens the box and then leaves. Later video shows the presence of three other suspects. The main suspect is described as a white male between the ages of 17 to 20. He has a medium build and appeared to be wearing jeans.” The field is home to West Sugar Land Little League teams. Doctors determined that Erica had hypertropic cardiomyopathy, more commonly known as athlete's heart. It is a genetic condition with no obvious symptoms that can suddenly kill otherwise healthy people without
warning. Doctors were able to get Erica's heart beating again but gave her just a five percent chance of making it through the night. Nathan says that a mother's love for her child gave Erica the strength to survive that first night. Doctor's inserted a pacemaker near Erica's collar bone which helped regulate her heartbeat. She spent two weeks in the ICU; Elena spent 76 days in the NICU
recovering from her traumatic birth. The family has been at home together for three weeks and are grateful to their "angels". "These three women came together with these special skills and they were able to use something as simple as CPR to save my life and to save Elena's life," Erica said. "Miracles exist. I'm here and I get to raise Elena and I can't ask for any more than that."

Taraneh Malik wins U.S. Dept. Scholarship winners announced of State NSLI-Y Scholarship Taraneh Malik, 11th grade student at Dulles HS, has been awarded one of approximately 625 National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) scholarships for 2013-2014. The NSLI-Y program is funded by the U.S. Department of State and provides meritbased scholarships for eligible high school students. The NSLI-Y scholarship enables Taraneh to study Arabic in Morocco for the summer. The scholarship covers all program costs for participants including domestic and international travel; tuition and related academic preparation; language testing; educational and cultural activities focused on language learning; orientations; meals; and accommodations, usually with a host family. Launched as part of a U.S. government initiative in 2006, NSLI-Y seeks to increase Americans’ capacity to engage with native speakers of critical languages by providing formal instruction and informal language practice in an immersion environment. The goals of the NSLI-Y program include sparking a life-
long interest in foreign languages and cultures, and developing a corps of young Americans with the skills necessary to advance international dialogue in the private, academic or government sectors. Through her participation in the program, Taraneh will serve as a citizen diplomat while developing the skills necessary to be a leader in the global community.

It is that third suspect detectives need help in finding. He has only been identified as “White Boy D.” Haenel said his name is possibly Derrick. He remains at large. Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Breast Center open house showcases new technology & staff Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is hosting a community open house for its Breast Center on Thursday, May 23, from 5 to 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend, tour, interact with staff, see how new imaging technology works and learn what’s new in helping meet the community’s breast health needs. New to the Breast Center in the last year are molecular breast imaging, a fourth mammography unit and a breast care navigator.
Molecular breast imaging (MBI) was added last summer making Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Breast Center the first in the greater Houston area to have the technology. The low dose MBI is a secondary diagnostic tool for women whose mammograms show suspicious findings or are difficult to interpret. This is especially applicable to women who have dense breast tissue, which is estimated to be 40 percent of mammography patients.
A fourth mammography unit was installed in the Breast Center last fall to meet the growing demand from patients and reduce wait times for appointments. The Breast Care Navigator assists patients who have been diagnosed with breast cancer, serving as a resource expert, helping them understand treatment options, coordinating appointments, and attending care conferences and discussions about the patient’s treatment. Maria Socci, a registered
nurse with specialty training in oncology, joined the Breast Center in this role early last year. The Breast Center opened in 2009 and moved to the new location off Town Center Boulevard on the Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Campus in 2011. Join us for our Breast Center open house on May 23! Dr. Randal Glenn installed as President of Greater Houston Dental Society Dr. Randal Glenn of Fort Bend Dental Associates was installed on May 16, 2013 as the President of the Greater Houston Dental Society (GHDS) founded over one hundred years ago. The GHDS is the local component of the Texas Dental Association (TDA) and the American Dental Association (ADA) and is the fourth largest local component society in the United States with a current membership of over 1,600. Dr. Glenn is also one of Fort Bend County's Historical Commissioners and in his
installation address to his colleagues and guests he noted, "History is important because in order to chart a path for the future, we need to know from where we came. We in dentistry are intimately connected with our history. The trials and tribulations of our previous generations are echoed in our voices today. The issues faced by our dental forefathers of 1904, the year this Society was founded, sound as if they were lifted from the pages today's GHDS Journal of 2013." Dr. Glenn also talked about

Rosenberg Railroad Museum to train volunteers as docents
On Saturday June 1, the Rosenberg Railroad Museum will begin training volunteers to serve as docents. “We are looking to increase our volunteer base and continue to grow our education program at the museum" stated Board President Bill Rickert. “We are looking for exuberant people who are excited about the Railroad Museum and who are interested in the history of the railroad in Fort Bend County. If you have ever taken a tour with a docent that was very enthusiastic about the home or exhibit you were touring then you know how that enthusiasm can be contagious.” For over a decade, the Rosenberg Railroad Museum has served the community not only by preserving the history of railroading in Fort Bend County but taught it as well,
and that’s where the volunteers come into play. Training is scheduled for adult docents on June 1st from 10:00 am till 1:00 pm (box lunch provided from Another Time Soda Fountain). Following training, docent volunteers will have the skills to give tours of our fully refurbished 1879 private rail car, “The Quebec”, which boasts a private dining area and sitting area along with bedrooms and a kitchen for the wealthy and influential traveler of the time. Tours also include Tower 17, the 17th switch tower built in the state of Texas in 1903. For over 100 years, Tower 17 was the longest operating manned interlocker in the state of Texas. The museum itself houses artifacts and exhibits that document the history of the railroads in Fort Bend County along with our Caboose and

The Texas Bar Foundation recently awarded Child Advocates of Fort Bend a $5,000 grant. The funds will be used to partially fund a therapist position and a criminal court advocate position in the Children’s Advocacy Center to provide services to sexually or seriously physically abused children. Child Advocates of Fort Bend’s therapy program began in 2004. The program, which started with one full-time therapist, has grown to three

full-time licensed therapists and one full-time criminal court advocate. All services are offered free of charge. Child Advocates of Fort Bend provides a voice for abused and neglected children in Fort Bend County. The therapists provide therapy to children ranging in age from 3-18, offer caregivers groups to help parents learn skills to help their children heal, and provide expert testimony in criminal and civil court. Children can participate in therapeutic
services for as long as they need to heal from their abuse. Despite the addition of a third therapist, the number of children in need of services continues to increase and there continues to be a waiting list for therapy. Volunteers are needed to help in the agency’s Children’s Advocacy Center and in the Court Appointed Special Advocates Program. Sugar Land - site of USA Canoe/ Kayak Marathon Team Trials It’s time to get outside and see what is happening in our exciting and fun community ...like the USA Canoe/Kayak Marathon Team Trials over this past weekend at Brooks Lake behind the Hyatt Place over at the Fluor Daniel Building area. It’s the first time that it’s been held in Texas, and Linda Kahue with the host hotel could not have been more accommodating to those associated with the event. About 30 canoe and kayak competitors, mostly kayak, came from a field all over the U.S., according to Brad
Pennington, principal organizer of the local event along with Sugar Land’s Kim Icenhower. Those in the marathon race did anywhere from five to seven laps around the U-shaped lake, which is about one and a half miles long before it connects to Oyster Creek. Sugar Lakes resident Magan Mollaei, who was jogging on a trail around the lake spotted the picturesque sleek, lightweight kayaks on the water along with the excitement when everything was about to begin mid-morning on Saturday, May 18th. So, she decided to stay and even got to

meet Boris Markin, the event winner in the senior men’s division affiliated with the Rockaway Olympic Center in New York, and a 2001 bronze medalist for Ukraine in the 200 meter world championships. Markin now gets to represent the U.S. in the ICF Marathon World Championships in Denmark in September. Know anything about kayak races? They’re high speed races for competitive classes, seniors, juniors under 23, men’s masters, and others, involving laps on a course with portages. requiring competitors to come out of the water and carry their vessels over land, sprint to the “in” spot and go back into the water. This portage at Brooks Lake, although it had very little elevation change, was just a tad closer that what the standard has been, possibly posing a challenge. The portage factors into the race time and it’s where most of the spectators gather to get a real close up look at each of the competitors…and being so physically close makes you feel you’re one of them. Pennington, who was also in the race with the senior class, broke the rudder off his kayak at the portage, so there went his time! There were cheers for Rusty Herbert from Missouri City and his sister Karen Hebert. Both did a splendid job on their kayaks. There were also times when competitors fell into the water and got back into their kayaks. So why do you think these water vessel aficionados do this? One of them said “it’s relaxing and a good escape sport!” The feedback about the lake course in Sugar Land…they really liked it.

First Colony Swim Team sent 4 swimmers to the 2013 Open Water All-Star Challenge in Fort Myers, Florida. The swimmers were selected from all the teams in the southeast Texas region to represent Gulf
Swimming. Chris Yeager, Peyton Quattlebaum, Shelby Fruge, and Corey Duke swam the 3rd Annual Fran Crippen Mile on Saturday. FCST was well represented as Chris finished 2nd for 13-14 boys and Peyton finished 1st
for 13-14 girls. The swimmers also competed on Sunday in the 5K challenge. Chris and Peyton both took 2nd place for the 13-14's, while Corey and Shelby represented the 15-18 age group taking home 6th and 12th place.
Toys to benefit Rainbow Room in Fort Bend Dr Dennis and Mrs Lynn Halford and staff collected toys for the Fort Bend Rainbow Room. The toys will be given to children in the care of Fort Bend County Children’s Protective Services. The Rainbow Room provides emergency and transitional supplies for unmet material needs of children and families in crisis in Fort Bend County. Standard items stocked within the Rainbow Room include baby formula and food, diapers, baby necessities (blankets, bottles, etc), clothes and shoes for children ages newborn thru 18 years of age, snacks, school supplies, books, stuffed animals, personal hygiene items and educational toys.
