Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC):

Child victims are brought to the CAC where forensic interviewers allow them to tell their stories in a safe place, social workers provide support and facilitate resources, therapists help them heal from their trauma and criminal court advocates prepare them for court testimony.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA):

Trained CASA Volunteers provide a voice for children who are in the care of the child welfare system and advocate for their “best interests” - emotional, physical, educational and medical needs. We are one of the few programs in Texas that matches 100% of children in foster care with a CASA Volunteer.

The Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Spine Center Brings Comprehensive, Specialized Care to Fort Bend

D

ealing with medical issues is simply a part of life. From the mundane to the more severe, we all seek and consult with medical professionals on a routine basis. Fortunately, we live in an age where excellent medical care is available. The downfall is that when we require the attention of a specialist, things can become more stressful, and many times, more complicated.

hat is certainly the case for patients suffering with back pain, the second leading medical condition that brings patients to their doctor’s office. Eighty percent of Americans experience back pain at some point in their lives, and with its widespread prevalence, back and neck pain can be difficult to properly diagnose and treat.

As the first of its kind in the region, the Spine Center also provides outpatient physical therapy. Patients have the benefit of physical therapy, occupational therapy and aquatic therapy. These skilled professionals work one-on-one with patients to develop treatment programs aimed at regaining function, increasing mobility and providing pain management, as well as restoring skills necessary for daily living.

Advanced Technology The Spine Center patients have access to Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s state-of-the-art imaging technology and operating suites, along with an in-house lab to ensure patients benefit from timely results. If surgery is the best course of treatment,

patients can be assured that they have the most highly skilled surgeons available. Imaging equipment includes four CT Scanners and three whole body 3-Tesla MRI machines including a 3-Tesla Wide Bore MRI for larger or claustrophobic patients, the only one of its kind in our area.

Meet Jonathan Wilson Patient – Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Spine Center Jonathan Wilson was raised in Fort Bend County and attended Clements High School. After school, he began his military career, and now at 35 years-old, he is part of the Air National Guard as an Avionics Specialist. His mobility is an important part of his life, not only in his job, but at home where he and his wife are raising their three children.

“I was at the gym working out,” recalled Wilson. “I finished my workout, and by the time I got home, I knew something had happened. I was experiencing pain in my neck and left arm.” fort bend

Three days after his injury, Wilson contacted his primary care physician, and was referred to Dr. Cheryl White, an interventional pain management specialist and a founding member of the Spine Center. During his visit, xrays and an MRI of his neck and spine were completed to determine the cause of his pain. The test results indicated that compressed nerves in Wilson’s neck were the cause of his pain. Dr. White administered an epidural steroid injection which decreased the intensity of his pain. After exhausting nonsurgical forms of treatment, Dr. White referred Wilson to her colleage, Dr. Vincent Wang, neurosurgeon at the Spine Center, for further evaluation.

“I received a call from the Spine Center and was scheduled for an appointment immediately,” said Wilson.

“Dr. Wang was great. He explained exactly what was going on with my neck.

We went over the MRI results, and he showed me my compressed nerves.”

Wilson shared that the information he received from Dr. Wang made him feel secure knowing that he was in the hands of an expert. “Dr. Wang felt that a month of physical therapy at the

Spine Center would be our first course of action. He informed me that surgery was a last resort. I was relieved that Dr. Wang did not suggest surgery to start with.”

Wilson completed one month of therapy at the Spine Center. “The physical therapists were very experienced and took excellent care of me.” Each session with the therapists was customized to concentrate on Wilson’s problem.

After completing physical therapy, Dr. Wang concluded that therapy was not producing the results he desired. It was determined that surgery was required to alleviate Wilson’s pain and repair the damage. Dr. Wang discussed the surgery in detail. He explained it was a minimally invasive procedure that would require an overnight stay. Wilson’s surgery was a success. “Dr. Wang was great.

He placed the incision on my neck between a fold so that eventually you would not even notice the scar.”

Wilson has been able to return to his normal activities. “Before the surgery, I was in pain, I had no strength in my left arm and my mobility was greatly reduced. Now, the strength is back in my left arm, and my mobility is almost where it was before I was injured. I have been able to do my job and be an active part of my children’s lives.”

Dr. Wang has continued to follow Wilson’s progress. “I attended follow up visits with Dr. Wang and physical therapy sessions after my surgery.”

Wilson expressed how thankful he was for the care he received from everyone at the Spine Center. “These people are amazing! They are top notch and very knowledgeable. If something ever happened again, that’s where I would go. I would also say that if you have a spine or neck injury, don’t wait to get medical help. ather’s Joy is proud to announce the eighth year of its Noah Consulting Father’s Joy Charity Golf Classic scheduled for Friday, May 16, 2014 at Wildcat Golf Club!

Founded in 2003 by Kristin and Shannon Tassin, Father’s Joy is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving families and prospective families of children with disabilities. After the birth of their first daughter, Abigail, who has Down syndrome, Kristin and Shannon were given extremely negative information about raising a child with a disability and were offered little hope. pril is National Autism Awareness Month, which was designated in 1970 by the United States to educate our communities about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Autism is a developmental disorder that affects the way our brain processes information. It involves a person’s ability to interact and communicate with others. Typically, autism appears during the first three years of life, but the severity of symptoms is different for each individual. Some symptoms may not be defined as well as others and may be misdiagnosed. This is the reason that education of this disorder is so important, and early diagnosis of this disorder is essential.

For the Colwell family of Sugar Land, the search for answers surrounding problems their daughter Nicole was having was not an easy one. Linda Colwell, Nicole's mom, explained, "When Nicole was two-years-old, I noticed that she was not speaking much or trying to communicate with her peers. Nicole had frequent ear infections and had tubes put in her ears. I thought maybe the issues she was having were related to not being able to hear properly."

According to her mom, Nicole had been in daycare since the age of six months and remained until she turned three. "I did not get any reports from

the daycare about any behavioral issues or problems. I took some time off right before her third birthday, and it became apparent to me that she was not developing socially or academically as well as her peers."

Knowledge is Power Colwell spoke with Nicole's pediatrician, and he suggested speech therapy.

After having Nicole tested, it was determined that she needed speech therapy.

Nicole attended two 30 minute sessions every week. After further research, Colwell discovered that the Fort Bend Independent School District offered a program for children with developmen-

tal delays. After being evaluated at the age of three and a half, Nicole was enrolled at the local elementary school and attended two 30 minute sessions each week. Even with four sessions of speech therapy per week for six months, Nicole was still not progressing as expected for her peer level.

Nicole began to have some behavioral issues, and Colwell suspected that her daughter may be autistic. "I asked her private speech therapist if she was aware of any program in the area that I might research on this disorder."

Colwell found there was a program in Rosenberg: Texana Children's Center for Autism. A meeting was set and a psychiatric evaluation was scheduled to determine if Nicole was autistic.

Thankfully, Colwell's search for answers led her to Texana.

A Light at the End of the Tunnel Colwell needed a full day program for Nicole, and she found that Texana offered both half day and full day programs for autistic children. In March of 2013, Nicole was enrolled at Texana. In the beginning, Nicole was only able to communicate with a very limited amount of single words. She was able to understand the alphabet and numbers, but she was unable to communicate them. One of her behavioral issues consisted of throwing herself on the ground and crying when she could not complete a task, such as opening the door to let one of her cats inside the house. She would begin to cry and could not be consoled.

she has one-on-one instruction, and the second half is in a classroom with other autistic children, as well as children that have no developmental issues.

Nicole benefits from both. She has learned how to be flexible by having different therapists for her one-on-one instruction and observing appropriate classroom behavior from the children in the Bridge Pre-K program. According to Lindsey Smith, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with Texana, initial testing is done on the children and appropriate programs are written to suit each child. Their progress is monitored and adjusted as needed.

Texana also offers monthly parent meetings, which are a very valuable tool for both the parent and teacher, to monitor progress. Parents and teachers express concerns or problems they experience, and in turn, adjustments are initiated to correct any issues.

Amazing Transformation Smith reported on Nicole's amazing progress. "I started working with Nicole in September of 2013. It used to take her a long time to warm up to other therapists when she did not interact with them on a daily basis. Now, she greets them by name when they speak to her. I would say that her most improved area has been her social interaction with peers and adults. She now uses three to four word sentences when speaking with friends. She loves to play outside and pull her friends around in a wagon. Nicole now engages friends into activities as opposed to just joining in with them."

Colwell stated that Nicole's progress has been amazing. She has gained confidence and likes to make her own decisions. Nicole can hold conversations with others, and she has learned how to take turns. "We were so fortunate to have found Texana. She would not be where she is today without them."

Nicole is on track to enter a kindergarten program this fall which is age appropriate. Her future looks brighter than ever.

HERE IS THE CHURCH, WHERE IS THE STEEPLE? Driving around Houston, you will notice that church architecture varies from one church to the next — some are traditional and some are contemporary. But if you are looking for a steeple to find a church, you will overlook a growing number of churches that meet in uncommon venues, including homes, schools, and hotel ballrooms.

For example, the Sienna Campus of Houston’s First Baptist Church calls a shopping center their home. Located in The Crossing at Sienna Ranch at 4309 Sienna Parkway two miles south of Highway 6, the church shares an address with Snap Fitness, Bravo Creative Arts, and Jim’s Taekwon-Do Academy. The property is managed by Rubicon Realty.

The church had been using about 3,800 square feet on the second floor of the building, including a large room for worship services and special gatherings, and classrooms for children. Recently, they leased and built out additional space on both the first and second floors, expanding their total area to about 13,500 square feet.

The new space on the first floor is approximately 6,500 square feet and includes a new worship center that holds over 200 people. In addition, the new first floor space features a foyer and coffee bar, as well as preschool classrooms. On the second floor, newly leased space will be converted into additional gathering space for children, students, and adults.

“This is a great location for our church,” says Campus Pastor Jeff Rees. “It’s easy to get to, there’s plenty of parking, and God has continued to provide additional space for us to grow here.”

During construction, the church held a special event in the space that would become their new worship center.

At the Foundation of Prayer gathering, members were invited to write on the foundation prayers, favorite scriptures, and the names of family and friends for whom they are praying.

“Going forward, we will literally be praying over these names of friends, family, and others,” says Rees. A similar Foundation of Prayer was held at the church’s campuses at The Loop (7401 Katy Freeway) and in Downtown (1010 Lamar). The church’s Cypress campus meets at a Smith Middle School (10300 Warner Smith Blvd).

The first Sunday in the Sienna Campus’ new space was March 30. The church gathers each Sunday for Life Bible Studies at 9:30 am and a worship service at 11 am.

(On Easter Sunday, they’ll have worship services at both 9:30 am and 11 am.)

Pastor Gregg Matte’s message on Sunday mornings at the church’s campus at The Loop is shown at the Sienna Campus via live video stream; some Sundays, Rees delivers the message in person. Worship is led by a live band, and Rees and other staff members provide the personal connection.

The Magnificent Tiger Ball and Fort Bend Supporters Celebrate Japan

he diversity and culture of Fort Bend residents was evident at The Asia Society Texas Center Tiger Ball as so many supported the event by celebrating Japan in the beautiful landmark building. The Tiger Ball sold out this year, well in advance, and 100 seats were added to accommodate the community-at-large. “Our membership has grown over three times in the last year,” commented Board Member Nancy Allen.

Fort Bend, which has a large Asian population, has many residents who have seen the value of being a member or partnering with The Asia Society Texas Center for its programs. “Some of the most coveted programs, speakers, entertainment and learning about Asian cultures happen here,” said Board Member Y. Ping Sun. “It is no wonder that Fort Bend residents flock in large numbers to programs associated with The Asia Society Texas Center.”

The ethnic attire, from various countries, created a colorful medley of all things Asian. This year, The Tiger Ball celebrated Japan. The evening began with fresh sushi, steak tetaki skewers and lamb “Turbans” with pinenuts and continued with an array of divine delights that could only be found in

the most coveted restaurants serving a Japanese dinner. Cherry blossoms were everywhere, in all rooms, in the gallery and in the outside reception area welcoming guests with their beauty, simplicity and fragrant smell.

The chairs of the event this year, Glen Yoshiaki Gondo and Donna Fujimoto Cole, expressed their need to make everyone feel like they were experiencing Japan.

It was back in 1995 when The Asia Society Texas Center’s Board of Directors voted to build a home for its programs. At that time, the offices were housed in a rental facility. Renowned Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi was selected by the Board to design the building, which is now located in the Houston’s Museum District. Taniguchi is best-known in the United States for his renovation and expansion of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The building was completed in early fall 2011. The 40,000-square-foot Center features the 273-seat Brown Foundation Performing Arts Theater, Louisa Stude Sarofim Gallery, Edward Rudge Allen III Education Center, Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall and more.

It opened to the public April 14, 2012.

“This magnificent center is the bridge for connecting all Asian Cultures housed under one roof,” stated Chairman Charles Foster.

The community from Fort Bend that supports the Center does so to enrich learning for themselves and for others.

Hours of Sitting: What’s Your Cancer Risk?

M

ost people spend the day sitting behind a desk. They commute home to relax, sit and watch TV, read a book or play computer games. Most Americans easily spend more than 8 hours of their day sitting.

And, sitting for several hours a day puts one’s health at risk – even if they exercise regularly. "Extended sitting raises your risk for colorectal, ovarian and endometrial cancers and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma," said Karen Basen-Engquist, Ph.D., professor of Behavioral Science at MD Anderson. It also increases risk for obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Luckily, reducing sitting time can be simple. "At least once an hour, get up and move. Stand while you’re on the phone or walk around the house during TV commercial breaks," BasenEngquist said. "A few minutes of light activity throughout the day can add up and help lower your cancer risks."

Cut Back on Screen Time Put down the remote. Research shows that for every hour of television a person watches after age 25, their life expectancy goes down by almost 22 minutes. But the real culprit isn't the TV. It's the time they spend sitting

when they’re binge watching.

"Cut back on TV, video game and computer screen time, and you'll be more likely to engage in active behavior," Basen-Engquist said. Choose an active-play video game that'll boost the heart rate or watch a favorite show while riding an exercise bike.

Then, they use charts and graphs to display activity over time.

Knowing the steps taken, or not taken, during the day can be useful.

Basen-Engquist uses a pedometer and tries to get at least 500 steps an hour.

Build Activity Into the Day "Even short spurts of moderate to vigorous physical activity can get your heart pumping and improve your health," Basen-Engquist said. “So, build activity into the day.”

Park at the far end of the parking lot, take the stairs or walk while on the phone. Tidying the house also can limit couch time.

Reduce Sitting at Work Most adults sit at their job, but there are simple ways to move more without them disrupting their work.

Have a walking meeting, stand during seminars or perform desk exercises.

Ask co-workers to join in taking laps around the office during lunch.

Change the work environment.

Office equipment, like standing and treadmill desks, are gaining popularity. "Working from an upright position uses more muscles, expends more energy and burns more calories than sitting," Basen-Engquist said.

Choose an Active Leisure Activity "Relax with an activity that doesn't require sitting," Basen-Engquist said.

"Take a fun dance class, work in the garden or walk around the neighborhood. You'll burn about 140 extra calories per day to help you maintain a healthy weight."

Use Technology Most email providers will allow people to schedule an alert to remind themselves to move every hour. There's an app for everything, including ones that remind people to take a get-upand-move break. Some apps also provide tools to track physical activity.

First Colony SynchroStars was recently represented at the Zone Championship meet in Florida by Elizabeth Oh, Hannah Chiu, Christy Lee and Abby Remmers. These athletes earned qualifying spots in this meet through their competition results during last season.

Elizabeth Oh competed in the Jr Solo competition and placed 7th. Oh was joined by Hannah Chiu for the Jr Duet competition, and their duet placed 8th.

They also placed 17th and 23rd in figures respectively.

In the 13-15 division, both Abby Remmers and Christy Lee competed in the solo event. Remmer’s solo placed 3rd and Lee’s solo placed 9th. These girls also swam a duet and placed 4th. They placed 5th and 20th in figures respectively. The top 4 placements for Remmer’s solo and the Duet qualify these athletes for Elite Nationals in Arizona in April.

Fort Bend County Museum Association’s annual fundraising gala, the Lone Star Stomp, returns to George Ranch Historical Park on Saturday, April 12th. This year marks the 25th anniversary of one of Fort Bend County’s most loved charity events.

The theme for Lone Star Stomp XXV, “Southern Belles & Beaux,” radiates classic elegance and true Texas hospitality. In celebration of the Stomp’s silver anniversary, the indoor arena at George Ranch Historical Park will be decorated in royal blue, silver and white, with magnolia flowers throughout.

Lynn Hewitt is serving as Chairman of the Event Committee, with Melody Hess as Live Auction Chair, Diane Elko as Silver Star Auction Chair and Kathleen Randall as Silent Auction Chair.

2014 HONDA ODYSSEY T

he 2014 Honda Odyssey just keeps getting better. The good engineers and designers at Honda have brought out the latest version of their very popular minivan and have made it even better and more helpful to moms and dads everywhere. There’s a reason why the Odyssey is the best-selling minivan: It’s perfect around town, as well as ideal for road trips. There’s nothing that the Honda Odyssey can’t do.

The first Honda Odyssey found its way onto American highways back in 1994. It wasn’t the first minivan (Chrysler introduced their Caravan over a decade earlier) but it caught on with the American public with its reliability and versatility. Minivans seemed to be everywhere as families migrated from station wagons and large SUVs to the

more fuel efficient minivans. As a result, several automakers stopping making minivans in favor of crossovers.

But luckily for us, Honda stuck with the Odyssey, and now, we’re living through the fourth generation of their minivan. It’s grown considerably, about two feet since the first ones, but it’s also become more welcoming to growing families. For instance, you can opt for a large, no make that giant, screen DVD coupled with a sound system that makes you feel as if you’re at the local multiplex.

With a base MSRP of $28,825, every Honda Odyssey is powered by a 248 hp, 3.5 liter V6 engine mated to a sixspeed automatic transmission. EPA estimated fuel economy is 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, about the same as we used to get in family sedans. The Odyssey can accelerate from zero to 60 in less than eight seconds, which is awfully quick considering the size of the vehicle and the engine.

With more than 100 model homes open for touring throughout Houston in April, showcase events like the one planned by The Johnson Development Co. don’t get much bigger.

Dubbed last year as “Houston’s Largest Home Tour,” the event has grown for its second annual launch to include nine area master-planned communities, more than 100 model homes and nearly 400 homes ready for move-in. All of the homes will be open 10 am to 6 pm Saturdays and noon to 6 pm Sundays. Admission is free.

Three developments in the Sugar Land/Missouri City area are among the nine communities participating in the month-long tour.

Imperial is a 700-acre mixed-use development surrounding the historic Imperial Sugar Company refinery in Sugar Land. Half of the haircut proceeds benefit the Hope for Three Family Resources Program.

Both events will be lots of fun with one mission in mind: autism awareness. “There’s nothing like witnessing the members of our young community showing why it’s cool to care for another human being, especially a child with autism,” said Sharon Buckle, Hope for Three Volunteer and mom to a child on the autism spectrum.

First Annual Fort Bend Cares Presents “Doggone Fun Run/Walk” April 12th

Dogs and owners of all ages and sizes are invited to walk, run or race to benefit underprivileged youth in Fort Bend County at the first annual Fort Bend Cares “Doggone Fun Run/Walk” on Saturday, April 12th at Memorial Park Sugar Land.

A 5K Run will begin at 8 am, and 1 Mile Run/Walk, with or without dog, will begin at 8:30 am. Medals will be given for age group winners of the competitive 5K run, along with prizes for the best in show winners in the “canine costume competition.” Fun and entertainment is promised for dogs and owners alike as they run or walk to DJ music, enjoy tips

with or without dog. Wheelchair entrants with dogs can enter at no charge.

Each registrant will receive a t-shirt and bandana for their dog. T-shirts and bandanas will be given out at race day registration while supplies last. Dogs must show proof of current rabies vaccination and be on a non-retractable leash.

Rachel Long: Molding Her Future

R

achel Long is a senior at Fort Bend Christian Academy.

Attending Fort Bend Christian Academy for 13 years, Rachel has made her mark on the school by excelling in the classroom, making beautiful art pieces and playing the field in soccer. With an exciting future ahead of her, Rachel is focused and determined to continue her education, grow in her Christian beliefs and pursue leadership opportunities that will allow her to impact others’ lives in a positive and meaningful way.

As an artist, Rachel has awed people with her beautiful pieces. After learning about the basics of art, Rachel chose a specialty of pottery and ceramics. “I enjoy working with clay because I can make things that are both practical and beautiful,” said Rachel. “I have made abstract sculptures and pitchers that can actually be used in people’s homes.”

Rachel competes annually with her pieces of work. As a sophomore, Rachel won first at the state competition in ceramics for her gunmetal pitcher. She has won eight medals over the past few years from the district and state competitions for her unique artwork. This year, Rachel is submitting her senior portfolio for competition, which is a compilation of her artwork over the past three years. Rachel feels very lucky to have the opportunity to compete in ceramics because Fort Bend Christian Academy has an excellent equipped art studio.

In addition to excelling in the art studio, Rachel is a very intelligent

student. She is ranked in the top eight percent of her class and is enrolled in advanced placement classes. She has already earned 12 college credits through her hard work and effort during high school. Rachel’s favorite class is her current apologetics class. “The apologetics class has given me a strong foundation of my faith as I enter college,” said Rachel. “I have learned how to discuss my faith with others.”

Rachel’s faith is important to her.

She is involved with her youth group and was on the group’s leadership team last year. As a member of the leadership team, Rachel was responsible for organizing and executing the youth group’s various activities such as the Spring Break Retreat, which was an overnight stay at a Bible camp.

Every year, Rachel travels on a mission trip with Fort Bend Christian Academy. Her Eagle Week trips have been extremely impactful as she has grown in her Christian beliefs while helping others first-hand. As a sophomore, she visited a Native American Indian reservation in Arizona, and last

year, she traveled to Belize. This year, Rachel will be traveling to Costa Rica with her senior class to help run a children’s club and assist with building projects.

Rachel is familiar with working as a team to accomplish a goal. This year, Rachel played on Fort Bend Christian Academy’s soccer team, where she is a defender. “I like the team aspect of soccer because we work as a team to win or lose,” said Rachel. “All of my teammates work hard on the field, and we have a lot of fun off of the field as well.”

Even though Rachel is involved in many different aspects at school, she still makes time to hold two jobs. Since she was 13 years old, she has cleaned an office building once a week. She also is a nanny for two kids during the summer. It is evident that Rachel has excellent time management skills and is a hard working young adult.

In the fall, Rachel will be attending Texas A&M University. She will be majoring in business and plans on obtaining her MBA. Rachel is looking forward to attending A&M and becoming involved with different organizations on campus.

Rachel is a first-class student and role model for her peers. Not only is she intelligent, having never received a grade lower than a B, but she is also a kind-hearted and loving person that aims to live by her Christian faith every day. Congratulations Rachel on your many accomplishments in high school; we know that the future holds great things for you!

The Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball recently announced that the club has extended a formal Spring Training invitation to former Houston Rocket and seven-time National Basketball Association All-Star Tracy McGrady. The announcement was made by Skeeters Manager Gary Gaetti and General Manager Chris Jones.

“I got called into the skipper’s office after practice, and he let me know that I was going to be a part of the Skeeters’ Spring Training camp,” said McGrady. “This has been a goal of mine, and it’s a great challenge. I’m looking forward to competing, and I’m excited about this great opportunity.”

The 6-foot-8, right-handed pitcher has maintained a strict pitching regimen and workout schedule since last fall, following his official retirement from basketball. Last month, the Sugar Land Skeeters released a statement in response to McGrady’s public acknowledgement of his pursuit to pitch for the club. The organization expressed appreciation for McGrady’s talent and interest, as well as a commitment to continue monitoring his progress.

“We’re intrigued by the progress Tracy has made thus far and really commend him for putting in the work,” said Gaetti.

During that span, McGrady earned two scoring titles (2002-04), seven All-Star Game nominations (2001-07) and was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player in 2001. In 2013, McGrady retired with more than 18,000 points and 5,000 rebounds in his career.

he Houston Dynamo named Timothy Sitter, M.D., with Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, as their new chief medical officer and head team physician.

As the head team physician for the Dynamo, Sitter will be involved in the club’s day-to-day activities to help prevent, evaluate and treat injuries. He will be on the sidelines for all of the Dynamo’s home games at BBVA Compass Stadium.

“The Dynamo are a first-class organization, and I am thrilled to be involved with the club,” Sitter said. “As someone who played soccer from my youth through college, I have always been a fan of the Dynamo, and it’s a tremendous honor to support these dedicated athletes and help them remain match-fit and healthy.

Sitter earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center. He completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Texas Medical School and a sports medicine and reconstructive surgery fellowship at the University of Oklahoma. He is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine.

In addition to Dynamo players and staff, Sitter will also work with David Braunreiter, M.D., the team’s primary care physician. Colon Cancer Screening

by Dr. Gregory Shannon Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the United States in women and men. Each year, approximately one-third of people who develop colorectal cancer die of the disease.

There is a popular misconception that colorectal cancer occurs more commonly in men, but this is not true. Women are equally affected.

There is a general agreement by experts that all adults undergo screening beginning at age 50.

Many people with colon cancer experience no symptoms because most cases begin as small clumps of abnormal cells called polyps.

When symptoms appear, they likely will vary depending on the cancer’s size and location in the large intestine (colon). Some signs and symptoms of colon cancer include a change in bowel habits, rectal bleeding or blood in the stool, abdominal discomfort, a feeling that your bowel does not empty completely after defecating and unexplained weight loss.

Colon polyps are abnormal growths that may eventually turn into cancer. The good news is that not all polyps are pre-cancerous.

Screening tests can find pre-cancerous polyps so they can be removed before they have a chance to turn into cancer. A colonoscopy is the most effective screening method. It is a painless procedure – most people sleep through it. Talk to your physician about colon cancer prevention.

Considerations for Patients Who May Benefit from a Hysterectomy The leading indication for hysterectomy in America is bleeding abnormalities most often caused by uterine fibroids. However, other problems can also require hysterectomy, including uterine prolapse, malignancy, pelvic inflammatory disease and pelvic pain. Methods of hysterectomy, which means to remove the uterus, plus or minus the cervix, range from abdominal, laparoscopic or vaginal to da Vinci robotics. Often times, recovery from the minimally invasive techniques involves small incisions and only an overnight hospitalization.

Whether or not the ovaries and tubes need to be removed at the same time depends on the woman’s age, personal/familial risks of cancer, indication for hysterectomy and personal preferences. What Young Men Should Know Now to Protect Against Cancer Men in their 20s and 30s might feel invincible, but they too can develop cancer. The most common cancer found in men ages 15 to 34 is testicular cancer. Testicular cancer rates are now twice as high for white American men than they were 40 years ago, and the rates for African American men are beginning to rise.

While testicular cancer is essentially unpreventable with risk factors present at birth, early detection and treatment are key to overcoming this disease. More than 95 percent of patients are cancer-free after completing treatment, especially if the cancer is detected early enough before it spreads to other parts of the body. Self-examinations and consultations with physicians are the best ways to ensure early detection.

Getting to the Heart Through the Wrist Coronary angioplasty is a surgical procedure that opens narrow or blocked arteries in the heart. A catheter, or flexible tube, is inserted into an artery to deliver balloons and stents to open the damaged arteries. Traditionally, the catheter is inserted into the femoral artery in the groin, but surgical breakthroughs now allow insertion of the catheter into the radial artery of the wrist.

According to the professional cardiology journal Circulation, utilization of the transradial, or wrist, approach has increased 13-fold in the five-year period from 2007 to 2012. The transradial angioplasty has been used extensively in Europe and other countries since it was first performed 20 years ago.

Bajid Basit, M.D., a cardiologist affiliated with Memorial Hermann who sees patients in Sugar Land, Rosenberg and Wharton, says transradial angioplasty is often safer than the traditional femoral artery procedure. “The transradial approach significantly reduces complications for patients and provides a higher degree of comfort,” said Dr. Basit who is board-certified in cardiovascular diseases, internal medicine and interventional cardiology. “Wrist access is almost painless and allows for a much more comfortable recovery after the procedure without the need for prolonged bed rest.”

Ninety percent of patients are candidates for the transradial procedure. Patients who have undergone both groin and transradial procedures overwhelmingly prefer entry through the wrist.

Coronary heart disease is very common and may lead to chest pain, heart failure or even heart attack if not promptly diagnosed and treated.

The TMS Serenity Center: Providing Relief for Major Depression Over 14 million individuals struggle with Major Depression, and over 19 million suffer from Anxiety Disorders. Unfortunately, less than half of these individuals benefit from treatment with traditional medications. Dr. Kimberly Cress, medical director of the TMS Serenity Center, says that it is not uncommon for her to see patients who are on one or more medications with continued depression and/or anxiety. Others are struggling due to the side effects from medications such as weight gain and sexual dysfunction.

An alternative treatment is now available called TMS or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. he 11th Annual Sugar Land Wine & Food Affair is set for April 23rd through 27th with an array of new attractions and added international flair. Attracting chefs from across the United States and Mexico, this five-day event celebrates all that is good, gooey, sweet, savory, bubbly, hoppy and simply irresistible.

The Sugar Land Wine & Food Affair has become one of the most anticipated culinary attractions of the year. Located in historic Sugar Land just minutes from Houston, its dinners, tastings and demos and have gained a well-deserved reputation for a rollicking good time where chefs share secrets, sommeliers get un-corked and attendees have exclusive access to incredible food, wine, spirits and beer.

The Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce produces the event in cooperation with the University of Houston’s Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management. Proceeds benefit a permanent scholarship endowment for Houston’s finest hospitality students.

Since its inception, the event has given more than 45 scholarships to students.

“The students who participate in the festival benefit from both hands-on experience and valuable connections in the world of hospitality,” said director Krystal Peay. “They have the opportunity to work alongside some of the industry’s finest and learn from them in a very interactive setting.”

Events take place at Sugar Land sites that include Sugar Land’s Town Square, Sugar Land Marriott Town Square and the grounds of the former Imperial Sugar Factory and historic Char House.

The five-day wine and food affair kicks off with a VIP dinner, followed by four days of events and tastings. New attractions include an outdoor beer gar-

aking homemade biscuits is becoming a lost art form due, in part, to today’s busy

lifestyle. Bring back the art of biscuit making by learning, teaching and sharing with others the joy of baking these delicious delights.

Sweet Blueberry

Drop Biscuits Makes: 12 biscuits • Crisco® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray • 2 cups White Lily® Enriched Bleached Self-Rising Flour • 1/3 cup sugar • 1/4 cup Crisco All-Vegetable Shortening, chilled • 2/3 to 3/4 cups milk or buttermilk, plus additional as needed • 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries If frozen, do not thaw

HEAT oven to 500°F. Spray baking sheet with no-stick cooking spray.

COMBINE flour and sugar into bowl. Cut in shortening with pastry blender or 2 knives until crumbs are the size of peas. Blend in just enough milk with a fork until dough leaves sides of bowl. If needed, add more milk to form soft dough. Gently stir in blueberries.

DROP dough by rounded tablespoonfuls onto prepared baking sheet 1 to 2 inches apart. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown.

COOL 2 minutes. Split and serve warm with butter.

Whisk eggs, milk, hot sauce and black pepper in bowl. Melt butter in 12-inch non-stick skillet over medium high heat. Add onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly softened.

Spread hashbrowns evenly in pan and part-way up sides. Cook without stirring until light golden brown and crisp on one side, about 3 minutes. Sprinkle crumbled sausage and bacon over potatoes. Pour eggs evenly over and arrange cheese on top. Cover skillet and reduce heat to low; cook until eggs are set in center and cheese is melted, about 15 minutes. Serve from pan or slide onto platter, then cut into wedges.

Look for recipes that combine the elements of sweet and salty, like this dish for potato cheese and apple tarts. Add shredded gouda or jack cheese and stir until melted. Cut pie crusts into 24 circles about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Using minimuffin tin (with cups the size of 1 3/4-by-1-inch), place one pastry circle into each of 24 muffin cups, pressing slightly. Spoon about one tablespoon potato and cheese filling into each cup.

Place in oven and bake until pastry edges are golden brown, about 12 to 14 minutes. In small pan, melt remaining tablespoon of butter. Add apple slices and saute until just tender, about 4 minutes. Stir in brown sugar and cook one more minute. When apple slices are cooled enough to handle, place a slice into each cup at an angle, trimming to fit if necessary. Sprinkle with chopped chives and serve.

he Middletons are a part of your life. Do you know them? I sure hope so since they are helping you raise your children. They have infected every part of our society and have quietly snuck into our cultural norm. The ads where grown men blatantly lie and bash each other in order to win elections indirectly are teaching that bullying is an acceptable way of winning friends. Yep, those are the ones! The producers who place shows on during “family time TV” that showcase one man and umpteen women willing to kiss and sit in bathtubs in order to be the “lucky” guy or gal to be selected as a mate. This is what is being taught to our children. The absurdity of it all is quite alarming.

I was jolted out of my stupor when watching television and recognized that the politicians were at it again swinging remarks that looked all too familiar to the bullying texts that we have seen drive teens to take their own lives. Remarks, lies really, to get a group of people to be one’s friends. The similarity to grade school is alarming. I am disgusted by it, and you should be as well.

With all of the bad behavior and bullying rhetoric that plagues my television, I am left wondering how in the world we are supposed to parent teens and shelter children from what I call “The Middletons?” (Definition: A group of middle aged people unabashedly abandoning all moral codes and ethics to benefit their own designs while disappointing the old and tainting the young.) Their reality shows, directed and written by “The Middletons,” give all of us a daily dose of sex, lies, bullying and bad moral code. They portray all these things as glamorous when in fact, nothing could be further from it. My teen is glued to The Bachelor, and as I walk past her watching the show, I am left asking myself: What praytell is so fascinating for a bachelor to kiss multiple women as if he is some great lion planning strategies as to how to conquer the den of females just waiting to be selected? It is in poor taste, and I am frankly sick of it.

My husband has observed that things are not the way they were when we were children, but he has no remedy as to how to go about fixing the situation. It is easy for us to sit and observe, difficult to actually intervene. Parenting requires it, though, and without training, the children will surely be-

come ever more destined to no longer be able to recognize what is right from what is clearly wrong. When I was young, there weren’t any reality shows, and although my generation had boys dressing like girls and girls dressing like boys, we were not as exposed to counter culture and bad morals. It was something we used to call “taboo.” That word has gone missing from our social vocabulary. There really is nothing left to say or do. What’s worse is this is our new norm.

Desperate times calls for desperate measures. We now must defer to my Nana to whom all decisions concerning morals and ethics are filtered and from which everything should and does pass. She has been dead now for 10 years, but she is an ever present go to in my mind if nowhere else. If asked about the bullying politicians, she would surely have already taken sides with her favorite candidate. She would say the other teammate “deserved what was coming to him.” On the shows like The Bachelor and The Kardashians, she would be sitting glued like her great granddaughter to whatever was happening next. “That’s just TV,” she would say. “It’s not real.” And, I suspect after realizing that TV now reflects and is the real deal, she might be sitting and rocking in her chair about now with lips pressed together in displeasure, hands clasped and writhing, and saying, “To heck in a hand-basket.

Yes, that is what this world is coming to!”
