Being “The Best” – it’s something Forsyth County understands. Living in a county with some of the nation’s best schools, people and quality of life, it only seemed natural for our team at the Forsyth County News to embark on the task of naming the first-ever, all-encompassing “Best of Forsyth”. However, we didn’t want to go at it alone. We solicited you – our fellow citizens and FCN readers – to tackle the project, and you came out in droves. More than 70,000 votes were cast in 210 categories during the three-week voting period at ForsythNews.com. New fine art and custom framing gallery comes to Forsyth Anthony Gallery began o p e r a t i o n s a t Vi c k e r y Village in 2012 bringing a unique fine art gallery and custom framing service to the area. They’ve aligned with some of the most talented artists throughout the world as well as a select few local artists. According to owner Bryan Smith, “The gallery’s mission is to put fine art into the hands of people who love it, and to provide a quality custom framing service at remarkably affordable prices.” Anthony Gallery staff ’s vast knowledge of the art industry and keen eye for design gives them a leading edge with custom framing. Their designers use this

knowledge to passionately help each customer find the best design that is right for them. During our interview with Bryan Smith, we asked about his decision to come to Forsyth County over other metro Atlanta areas. “We noticed how underserved Forsyth County was with respect to the arts. We wanted to change this and the character of Vickery Village made sense. Many people in the community enjoy decorating their homes with unique quality art, and custom framing their own special memorabilia. People are tired of mass produced low quality wall décor. They’re eager for something refreshing,
something with meaning. We fill this gap.” The gallery showcases approximately two dozen artists. Among their unique styles are abstracts, photo realistic, surrealistic, impressionistic, expressionistic, cubism, and more. The gallery provides a variety of price points to accommodate multiple budgets. Beyond art and custom framing the gallery can also be rented for special events. Since opening the gallery has hosted fundraisers, book signings, holiday parties, corporate events, rehearsal dinners and weddings. The gallery exceeds the standards of even the most discerning event planners. The space graciously
accommodates up to 92 guests for a formal seated banquet, or 173 for an elegant reception. Included in this offering are washrooms, a kitchenette for catering, sound, music, telephones, and dramatic special lighting effects. Cumming Dance Academy teaches grace, poise Life-long dancer Niki Jernigan-Watkins had a dream of turning her passion and talent for dance into a teaching career and bringing the magic of dance alive for others. Driven by her passion and talents, Miss Niki as she’s fondly known by students, is realizing that dream for a sixth year running as the owner and artistic director of Cumming Dance Academy. Given her professional history and accolades for performance and teaching, it’s no surprise that Cumming Dance Academy has succeeded with Miss Niki at the helm. A marker of the academy’s success came in 2009 when Cumming Dance Academy’s new facility opened. The 7,000-square-foot facility located at 419 Tribble Gap Road in Cumming affords the academy more space for staff, students, and parents. In 2012, Miss

Niki opened her second location with the addition of “CDA II Performance Academy”. Committed to the youth of this community, she has taught thousands of young ladies how to grow, dance and gain confidence through her academy, classes and guidance. Miss Niki opened the original CDA in 2003 and has enjoyed watching it grow and flourish into a place where many call home! In 2012, she expanded her second location at CDA II – to include three more studio rooms. In July 2014, she opened CDA III – on the other side of town, near Windermere enabling the studio to now reach even more children who may live closer to the Buford side of Cumming. At the helm of 3 location, 6 studio rooms and many young ladies, Miss Niki announced in January of 2015 the introduction of the
new Music and Theater Department of CDA. Now offering classes in vocal coaching, guitar, violin, and piano training as well as a wide range of broadway/musical theater styled classes. In 2014, Niki was selected 1 of 11 business professionals by the Chamber of Commerce to sit on the Small Business Advisory Council. The council is a division of the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce that is available to help local small business owners become successful! Of her beloved CDA, Miss Niki has been quoted: “I am incredibly blessed to work with an amazing group of women who not only share my love of dance, but also my love of children and young people. Over 75% of our students have been with us since we opened our
doors; I think that speaks volumes for both our studio and staff. We teach these young ladies, we grow with them, we learn with them, but most of all – we love them.” Cumming Dance Academy is a place of instruction for both serious and recreational dancers and offers classes for children from 2 year olds to adult. CDA classes are led by a professional staff with decades of experience and impressive performance credits. Conference center tops list for event gathering The Forsyth Conference Center is honored to be considered the 2015 Best of Forsyth “Banquet Facility.” Forsyth County has been recognized not only as one of the fastest growing communities in the state but also, more recently, as one of the best places to live. And our many happy hours rolling carpet at your dad’s carpet store, and you’ve been “on a roll” ever since! Every day on my way to Fred’s Beds Mattress Clearance I pass the Flack’s Flooring store on 400, a shining beacon of corrugated metal, natural stone, and a pair of Pink Panthers whose charisma can only be surpassed by your own. Through those glass-plate double doors lies a flooring mega store: carpets of pure wool and nylon blend, tiles of ceramic, planks of hardwood, carpet squares, and happy customers. Children’s Healthcare focusing on future Since Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta moved to Forsyth in 2011, the staff has seen more than 50,000 patient visits, treating everything from the flu to shin splints. Soon, Children’s will offer another important, lifechanging pediatric service in Forsyth — the early detection of developmental delays in infants. With a new eye-tracking screening device, clinicians will be able to see the world through the eyes of a child. The screening will detect how infants perceive their environment. The eye-tracking device works by using cameras that focus on a child’s eyes. Short videos and images are shown to the child, and when his eyes move, the cameras can tell what part of
the scene he is watching. Most children focus on people’s eyes and faces, but infants at risk for autism tend to focus on objects and movements more than their typically developing peers. By detecting these risk factors earlier, the hope is to catch conditions, such as autism spectrum disorders, or ASD, at the earliest possible stages. Currently the average age of diagnosis of ASD is when a child is about 5 years old. If discovered early, this screening can lead to a lifechanging early intervention. “We can now make a difference,” said Ami Klin, director of the Marcus Autism Center and professor and chief of the division of autism and related disorders a t E m o r y U n i v e r s i t y. “Anything we do within this
window of opportunity will have lifetime consequences for the patients.” Warren Jones, director of research at Marcus Autism Center, said they “study how children with autism look at, and learn from, the world.” “Literally, we measure every movement of a child’s eyes while he looks at other people, quantifying how much time a child spends watching other people’s eyes or watching other important social gestures,” Jones said. Studies show that the earlier a child is diagnosed with autism and starts treatment, the better the outcome. Klin and a team of researchers came to Atlanta from Yale University to launch the largest research effort for children with
autism and related disorders in the country — a collaboration between Marcus Autism Center, a subsidiary of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and Emory University School of Medicine. Klin and Jones agreed that the most important partners in this new program will be pediatricians who screen patients in well-baby checkups and refer families with babies or young children at risk for autism. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends screening children for ASD at 18 months and 24 months and asking about social and emotional developmental milestones at every wellchild checkup. Bulls Eye Marksman Gun Club offers lessons for all types of shooters We at Bulls Eye Marksman Gun Club want to thank all of our patrons who had a hand in voting us the Best Gun Shop in Forsyth County for 2014. If you have not had a chance to come by yet, we hope that you do so in 2015. We are a full service indoor shooting range and gun store located off Bethelview Road near exit 13 on GA 400. We offer various levels of memberships, and are open to the public. We have 10 pistol and 2 rifle lanes, and 5 outdoor archery lanes. We also have a large inventory of rental guns so that you can come and try out various styles and calibers before you decide on a purchase, or just come and try some different handguns and rifles for a new experience. Safety and proper control are paramount, and we offer several levels of classes for beginners, intermediate, and experienced shooters, starting with our NRA Basic Pistol class on the first Monday evening of each month. You can set up a private lesson with one of our instructors for a particular discipline at your convenience, such as concealed carry and advanced self-protection. We host several shooting leagues (IDPA, USPSA/NAAS) as well as our ladies group, the Sisters In Arms. We run a GSSF Indoor Glock Match on the first Saturday of each month, and an Open Pistol Match on the second Tuesday of each month, which cater to beginners as well as experienced shooters.

Northside Hospital-Forsyth keeping up with new technology to better serve patients Northside Hospital-Forsyth continues to expand and enhance its services to meet the growing health care needs of the community and there’s no indication that growth will slow anytime soon. Today, Northside HospitalForsyth has more than 2,300 physicians in more than 60 medical specialties and nearly 2,200 employees who experienced more than 317,000 patient encounters in 2014. In 2014, Northside Hospital-Forsyth greatly enhanced its heart and vascular services. The hospital was the first in Georgia to use the n ew M a g e l l a n R o b o t i c System to perform minimally invasive endovascular procedures to treat blood clots in the legs and arms, and repair aortic aneurysms. The technology has granted an unprecedented level of precision in
navigating the extremely complex anatomy of peripheral blood vessels. Northside Hospital-Forsyth also was the first in the state to use the Lutonix 035 Drug Coated Balloon PTA Catheter to treat peripheral artery disease in the thigh and knee. The device provides patients with a superior alternative to traditional balloon angioplasty, resulting in more successful outcomes and better longterm results. For cancer patients, a new partnership sponsored by the Northside Hospital Cancer Institute was selected to implement a new cancer research program that aims to reach more Georgians in their own cities and towns, including Cumming. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) Community Oncology Research Program (NCORP)

recently awarded the partnership a five-year, $5.85 million grant. Through the Georgia NCORP partnership, patients with cancer or increased risks of cancer in Georgia will have access to NCI-funded clinical trials through their cancer physicians at 41 participating NCORP locations throughout the state. In addition, the Northside Hospital-Forsyth Cancer Center is preparing to offer the Leksell Gamma Knife® Perfexion™ with Extend™ system, which allows physicians to use radiosurgery to treat conditions that were considered inaccessible or inoperable with traditional Gamma Knife technology. The technology will allow the Cancer Center to treat a wide range of brain tumors and other neurological conditions through the most advanced and non-inva-
sive technology that delivers Gamma radiation. Northside Hospital-Forsyth is committed to balancing clinical excellence with highquality, compassionate care and has been recognized for doing just that by the nation’s leading health care organizations. In 2014, the hospital was named to the Chairman’s category (the highest on the list) of the Georgia Hospital Association’s Partnership for Health and Accountability Core Measures Honor Roll.
