om /mäm/ noun: The woman who loves you unconditionally from birth, the one who puts her kids before herself and the one whom you can always count on above everyone else. Such a small little word, but what a person she is in our lives! We celebrate moms and motherhood every May for their tireless work and sacrifice in our lives… yes, our whole lives. Because you never stop caring or worrying, no matter how old your children get. Speaking as a mom of two adult women now, I totally understand why my own mother still tells me, “You’ll always be my baby!”

Yes, while your children do grow up and relationships evolve, you never forget that small gift from God you were given. You never want to stop protecting them from any hurt or harm that may come their way.

Unfortunately, accidents and circumstances happen beyond our control and sometimes the unthinkable happens. I ask that you pray for the Doss family as they mourn the loss of their two-year-old son, Finn. Lisa writes many wonderful articles for us each month and our hearts break for the loss they suffered. It’s times like these that we are reminded just how very fleeting life can be. Don’t wait till tomorrow to send that letter or make that phone call. Squeeze every moment of love you can into each and every day!

T

oday I sat down with Lori Prescott, the Executive Director of the Winston-Salem Youth Chorus. The WSYC has been providing life-shaping experiences for young people for over 20 years since its founding by Artistic Director Barbara Beattie. Over the years, it has evolved into the premiere youth chorus for the Piedmont area, working with the WS Symphony, the Piedmont Opera and the Piedmont Wind Symphony; but is also known as a world-renowned youth chorus.

WSYC children have had the opportunity to sing all over the country and the world. In past seasons they have performed in Chicago, Austria and Paris, and will soon be in New Orleans. Because of her drive to share her heart for music, Beattie has given kids memories that many people only dream of experiencing. Not only has Ms. Beattie’s love of music entertained countless people all over the world, but that passion has been passed on to children who have gone on to succeed in all walks of life.

Ellen Bryan, a 2005 WSYC alumna and graduate from Webster University Theatre Arts Conservatory in Acting & Musical Theatre, had this to say: “WSYC embraced not only my love for music, but allowed me to be myself. It was a turning point in my life that has made me into the person I am today, and for that, I am extremely grateful.” The professionalism and confidence that performing in the Winston-Salem Youth Chorus instills in young people cannot be underestimated.

Performing in front of people is not an easy thing, but these children learn to deliver a performance with poise and grace.

Alumna Erinn Diaz explained to me, “Barbara Beattie and the WinstonSalem Youth Chorus was one of my very first onstage experiences as a young performer, when the chorus started in 1993. I am now a professional actress and singer, and tour the country with my 1940s singing group ‘Letters from Home.’ I also founded the Spring Theatre Company, an education-based theater company in Winston-Salem that offers programs in theater, dance and voice for all ages, and what I learned from the chorus and ‘Mrs. Beattie’ was instrumental in my education and success as a performer and theater teacher.”

This year marks the retirement of Barbara Beattie, but she will be going out with a bang! An upcoming tribute to her will be the “Mad Hatter Gala,” which will take place on Saturday May 30th, from 6 p.m. to 10 12 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

New Technology Makes “Getting Braces” A Lot Less Messy

impressions were made, the assistant would pour the model up in plaster, taking 10 minutes, wait 30–40 minutes for the plaster to dry, pull the old impression off, hoping no teeth broke off of the impression, wait 15–20 more minutes before trimming the model and finalizing it to make a retainer, followed by another 20 minutes making the retainer. With the scanner and 3-D printer, after the initial 5–10 minute scan, the other parts of the process are computerized and automated, and the resulting perfect model is ready in about an hour to make the retainer. The scans are kept on the computer and can be downloaded to a Cloud storage facility. If one is ever needed, it can be recalled like any computer file and sent to the 3-D printer to make another model,” Dr. Shoaf commented. This new technology also helps patients with special needs who would otherwise not be able to hold still long enough for traditional impressions.

f you were like me, “getting braces” was quite a traumatic process.

Back “in those days,” I had to have two teeth extracted and then, what was almost worse than that, was having the gooey mess of getting impressions of my teeth. There are some things in life that make an “impression” on your memory and getting impressions did that to me. Over the years, technology has advanced to the point of being able to get 3-D views of a patient’s teeth, thus making the need for the goo to be gone. Dr. Sarah Shoaf at Salem Smiles Orthodontics has implemented a new system of scanning and 3-D printing to streamline the practice’s impression processing. Basically, the 3-D print is now the model/mold of the past!

Salem Smiles Orthodontics is the only office in the area using the scanning and 3-D technology of the iTero light scanner within orthodontics practices. “The iTero light scanner is able to make a digital 3-D image of a patient’s mouth, then print it if a model needs to be made for a retainer. Our patients love it because there is no gagging on “goo” in their mouths. Our assistants love it because they can scan in the same amount of time it takes to make regular alginate impressions, but they don’t have to pour the models up in plaster, wait for them to set, trim the models and store the models after making them. We now give the patients their 3-D printed plastic models when they get their braces off. Normally, to replace a retainer, it entails the labor costs for remaking an impression, as well as the cost of the retainer. If patients bring back their undamaged plastic models, we are able to make a replacement for a lost or broken retainer at a substantial discount,” said Dr. Shoaf. In addition to being more comfortable for the patient, the use of 3-D printing also gives Dr. Shoaf’s assistants less mess to clean up.

“Our assistants can attend to other duties while the 3-D printer makes a set of models in about 50 minutes. [Previously], after the 20 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

“The scanning is also used to make Invisalign aligners, which allows us to treat just about any malocclusion without the pain of physical wires and brackets in the mouth. Invisalign is also helpful for the patient who is severely physically or mentally challenged, as traditional braces would normally be an aspiration hazard; Invisalign allows treatment without worrying about swallowing, breaking or aspiration,” said Dr. Shoaf.

My Stepmother, My Friend

icked Stepmother”?! My stepmother is Wickedly Awesome. She is the Thelma to my Louise, the Ethel to my Lucy, and she is my forever friend. We are very much the “blended family,” and frankly, I wouldn’t want to imagine it any other way. Every day I am thankful that she chose us; she didn’t have to, but she did.

“W

Being a stepmother can’t be easy. Stepmothers often suffer unjustified condemnation, the very definition of a “bum rap.” They are the ultimate literary villain. Lady Tremaine (Cinderella’s stepmom), Queen Grimhilde (Snow White’s stepmother), Hansel’s and Gretel’s stepmother, Fiona (a Cinderella Story), Frieda (Happily N’Ever After) and my personal least favorite, Meredith Blake, the almost-stepmother in Parent Trap. So, if this is the face of the stepmother, you’d have to have a lot of love and dedication to still want to be one.

They’re not all bad, of course. Remember Carol Brady and Maria von Trapp? My own stepmother more closely resembles these, only she is so much cooler. I was 15 when we met her. My Mom had just died, shortly after my folks were divorced. You could say there was a little emotional turmoil. Most people would have taken one look at us and run away.

Blended families face similar hurdles, regardless of their circumstances. It isn’t easy, but it can be so rewarding. If you find yourself in this situation, I hope you will persevere; it’s worth it. As it would happen, my stepmom didn’t run, she took it all in stride. Where we were splintered, she helped us heal; she made us better than whole.

We never thought she was trying to replace our Mom. A common concern with stepchildren. I think she may have said as much.

Stepchildren struggle with loyalties. They might feel guilty if they love both moms (or dads). Sometimes the new parent feels threatened by the other parent. She made photo albums of our Mom and invited us to talk about her. My stepmom said she was grateful to her, for us. Who says that?! Seriously!?! She did because she is amazing.

Some blended families have trouble assimilating roles, routines and rituals. We have never been accused of being conventional, which she accepted and actually seemed to enjoy. Together she and Dad made our memories better and established new family traditions. We never worried about birth order, roles, or titles like “step” or “half” or “adopted.” When she and Dad gave us 3 new siblings, everyone was “ours,” not his or theirs.

She sewed my prom dress. She asked me to sing at their wedding. She hosted my wedding reception. She drove hundreds of miles to be with me the day our daughter was born. (Even though it was Christmas day, and they still had small children at home.) She and Dad were there for the birth of our son and countless adventures after that.

For 35 years my stepmom has been a part of our every celebration and our day-to- day. My husband adores her; our children each have their very own special relationship with her—and as for me? She is my coauthor and work partner. More than that, she is my other Mother and my best friend. Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. Thank you for choosing us. You didn’t have to, but we are all so happy you did.

Knowing Your Blood Pressure Numbers

hat is blood pressure, and why is it important?

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the blood vessel walls.

Knowing your blood pressure numbers can save your life.

Normal blood pressure is below 120/80 mmhg. Healthy arteries have smooth inner walls, allowing blood to flow through them without a problem. The blood vessels stay strong and flexible.

High blood pressure is 140+ and/or over 90+ that stays high over time. The top number is called “systolic” which is the measure of pressure in the arteries when the heart muscle beats or contracts. The bottom number is referred to as “diastolic” and measures the pressure in the arteries between heart beats or during relaxation.

If someone has high blood pressure, then blood flows through their arteries with too much force, damaging the walls over time.

This creates rough spots where fat and calcium start to build up. This buildup is called plaque. Over time, plaque can narrow an artery and block blood flow through it, which can lead to coronary artery disease, heart attack, heart failure, stroke, kidney failure, peripheral arterial disease and eye damage—retinopathy—that can lead to vision loss and blindness. High blood pressure typically has no symptoms and is often called the “the silent killer.” About 1 in 3 adults has high blood pressure, but many do not know they have it. In most cases, the exact cause of high blood pressure is not known, although stress can be a major contributor to persistent elevations. Stress can happen to anyone. It can be positive or negative, depending upon someone’s reaction to stressful conditions.

Stress can affect all our body systems, as well as our emotional state, which can then contribute to elevations in blood pressure.

Healthy living leads to a better life and a lower risk of developing blood pressure problems.

Stress needs to be controlled, and the following are some coping mechanisms that could be tried to help alleviate stress, and therefore render better blood pressures.

Stress coping mechanisms: • Increase/solidify your spiritual connection •Carve out personal time for yourself • Prioritize tasks that need to be completed • Do not try to be “superwoman” or “superman” • Take baths • Read • Do breathing exercises • Meet with a friend • Listen to relaxing music • Dance • Walk/Exercise • Stretch exercises • Counseling • Support group therapy • Relaxation training Controlling stress plays an important role in the control of one’s blood pressure. “We lived in St. Joseph, Ill., with a population at that time of 1,900, and my dad was the only dentist in town,” Dr. Rudnicke explains.

“For our family, life was about knowing your community and building relationships with your neighbors. That idea of community and doing your best for those you serve is the belief I have carried into my orthodontics practice.”

Located at 1704 S. Hawthorne Road for more than a decade, Rudnicke Orthodontics will be moving to a new, much larger, modern space in June. “Our motto is ‘Bright Smiles Ahead,’” Dr. Rudnicke says.

“Spring is my favorite season. There is the promise of something new, something renewed. The idea of looking forward to a new smile—a brighter smile—brings hope, excitement and enthusiasm.”

A Tradition of Personalized Care Dr. Rudnicke graduated with a biology degree from Illinois Wesleyan University and then attended the University of Illinois Dental School, where he graduated with honors. He completed his residency, receiving his Orthodontic Certificate at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., and he practiced in both Kentucky and Tennessee, before heading to North Carolina.

“I moved with my wife Stefanie to Winston-Salem in 2002 to join the practice of Dr. Cyrus Bazemore and eventually took over the practice when Dr. Bazemore retired in 2005,” he says. “Between watching my dad in his practice and working under Dr. Bazemore for several years, I saw two professionals who had a passion for what they do and for giving their patients the best care possible,” he says. “It left an impression, and it is one of the reasons my staff and I strive to make our patients’ comfort, care and safety a priority.”

The plan to move has been in the works since the fall of 2011, when he and Dr. Mark Suttle of Forsyth Periodontal Associates discussed the possibility of building a new facility on Lyndhurst Avenue. When the property they liked went up for sale, they bought it, and the groundbreaking was held on July 14th, 2014. They hired Dr. Michael Unthank of Lincoln, Nebraska, who has designed more than 1,500 dental offices and is also a licensed and practicing general dentist.

“He has been able to make the new offices extremely efficient while incorporating all the amenities we wanted,” Dr. Rudnicke explains.

The building will have Dr. Rudnicke’s and Dr. Suttle’s individual private practices in the main level suites. Dr. Martin Gamble, an endodontist, and Lab 33, a dental lab, will occupy the floor below.

“The new building will have technology in place to enhance patient care,” Dr. Rudnicke says. “For example, we will have a 3D X-ray machine, which exposes the patient to less radiation, while giving a 3D image of oral and facial structures that can be printed and made into a physical model of a patient’s teeth.”

Local, individualized care means listening to the needs of today’s families. “Today, families are busier than ever,” he says. “We strive to deliver the best possible outcome in a time-efficient manner— minimizing both the duration and the frequency of patient appointments.”

“I was fortunate enough to start my Cosmetic Surgery practice at a time when Botox® was first approved by the FDA, which was the precipice of a period of exciting innovation in the area of fillers. At that time the only fillers available were made of bovine or cow collagen, requiring a patch test in order to determine if the patient was allergic, and the fillers only lasted about two months. In 2003, Restylane® was FDA-approved and the revolution in technology began. Restylane® is a hyaluronic acid filler, which is a normal component of our dermis, so when we treat with Restylane® we are simply replacing what the skin loses over time naturally. Hyaluronic acid fillers can last up to 18 months, quite an improvement,” stated Dr. White. The latest advancement in fillers is Restylane Silk®, called “lipstick in a syringe.”

t baseball stadiums around the country, fans have already begun hearing those famous words, “Play Ball!” It’s a sign that spring is here and summer is just around the corner. And whether you’re an avid fan who follows every game and every player, or just have a love for the exciting atmosphere and experience at BB&T Ballpark, the thought of Winston-Salem Dash Baseball has to make your heart beat a little faster.

Long-time residents know that when it comes to minor league baseball in the Twin City, the excitement and tradition of great players and championship teams are only part of the total package the Winston-Salem Dash have to offer.

Loyal fans know the history of the greats who have played here and moved on to the majors, including the Dash players themselves, along with their opponents in the Carolina League.

Therefore, exciting baseball has always been a mainstay. However, there are other traditions relating to the fans of this tremendous team and organization that raise the experience of going to the ballpark to another level completely.

“L

ike a good neighbor…” Most of us know how to finish that phrase, and can even sing along with the popular jingle associated with State Farm Insurance, a company that has been steadfast in serving its policy holders since 1922. Over 90 years later, local agents like Will Wilkins continue to provide advice and guidance to help individuals and families manage the risks of everyday life, recover from the unexpected and realize their dreams.

Like a neighbor who gathers your mail and watches your dog while you are away relaxing on the coast for a week, Will offers a few tips to help keep your home safe in your absence. One important tip that many miss, however, is to keep the vacation details off social media. “We actually heard of a situation where a family had to leave home unexpectedly for a hospital visit and quickly posted on Facebook asking for prayers,” Will said. “When they returned that evening, the home had been robbed. You can never be too careful.”

Unfortunately, as Will knows from experience, similar incidents occur more often than we would like to think. Of course, once you are safely home, let the Facebook posts of beach sunsets and sunburned shoulders begin!

After 23 years in the field, Will has become an expert on tips like these.

Getting Started Family Meals

O

ne of the most powerful ways to spend time together as a family is at the dinner table. Recent research studies show that children who eat with their families benefit in a variety of ways. Eating together helps improve children’s nutrition, as they eat fewer fried foods and are more likely to eat fruits, vegetables, lean meats and milk.

Children benefit in ways unrelated to nutrition by eating with their family. They do

better in school and on achievement tests. They are less likely to abuse drugs or smoke cigarettes. They are also less likely to become depressed or develop eating disorders. However, with busy schedules and after-school activities, getting to the dinner table together is not easy. Many families feel like they just don’t have the time for family meals. Here are some steps to help your family get to the table together a little more often.

Start where you are. Start with what you eat now and eat it together at regular and routine times. Try not to get caught up in what you “should” be eating. If we focus too much on what we think that we should be eating, the fun is drained right out of meals. The first step is to just enjoy eating together as family.

Keep it simple. Create “no-cook” meals like canned vegetable soup and sandwiches, or frozen pizza and a bag of salad mix. If you cook, make simple recipes that you already know. Cooking new recipes usually takes more time than your trusted and tried favorites.

It only takes two. Because of busy schedules, not every member in the family may be available for every family meal.

Just gather whoever is available in the house and sit down for a meal.

Be considerate without catering. If you have picky eaters in your family, pleasing everyone with one meal can be stressful.

Oftentimes, we try to cater to every person by making several meals in one night. Rather than being a short-order cook, prepare one meal that you know that everyone can make do with. If you know that your child won’t like the soup you prepared, offer other foods with this meal that she might be able to make do with, like bread, fruit and milk.

There is no magic meal. Eating dinner together might be too challenging during the week with busy schedules. Find other meals that you can share together, like breakfast in the morning or lunch on the weekend.

Put the fun back into meals. Children love to find ways to make eating together more fun by lighting candles, decorating the table, or playing special music. By including children in the planning, preparation and clean up, they learn those important life skills around preparing meals. They also feel connected and significant to the family.

amily dentistry encompasses a wide range of professional dental services, from caring for the youngest patients to addressing the oral health of senior adults.

The most recent addition to Southern Dental Associates is the pediatric office in Advance, NC, caring for the younger members of your family. Pediatric dentist Dr. Chad Shobe recently joined Drs. Dr. Shobe, a native of Gilbert, Arizona, practiced general dentistry five years before completing two additional years of training in the treatment of children, including those with complex medical issues and special needs. “I saw

many children as a general dentist who had huge needs. Many of those cases were so complex I had no idea where to start. I realized that there is a huge need for pediatric dental specialists and that’s why I returned to school, and I am so glad I did! I feel like we are making a difference,” said Dr. Shobe.

Keeping Your Smile Beautiful for a Lifetime Our smiles are so much more than just an important aesthetic attribute. “Baby teeth in particular are critical to the overall growth and development of children. The most common chronic childhood disease is dental caries, or cavities,” Dr. Shobe commented. And for Dr.

Shobe, the frustrating part is that in most cases it is preventable.

Decay in baby teeth, or early childhood caries, as it is formally known, can lead to pain and infection which can directly affect developing permanent teeth. Early loss of baby teeth due to cavities can lead to shifting, causing significant orthodontic problems. Establishing a dental home early for your child is an important step in avoiding these issues.

Maintaining your child’s dental health at a young age will provide health benefits into adulthood. “The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and The American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that parents choose their child’s dentist when their first tooth erupts, or by their first birthday, whichever comes first,” stated Dr. Shobe. Although this may sound early, a lot can be determined during the first visits to the dentist. Primary teeth serve as a guide of sorts for the May Issue 2015 • 41

permanent teeth to come, helping the adult teeth to take their proper place. The initial first visits may be just introductory to acquaint your child with the dentist and the practice, but don’t discount the importance of a child building trust with his or her dentist, should they need treatment later for any problem that may arise.

“Early dental visits allow parents to receive important information about the overall oral health of their child. We discuss tips for preventing cavities, as well as any habits that could lead to orthodontic needs in the future.

Small children are prone to bumps and bruises, in particular around their teeth. It is important to establish a dentist in case of unforeseen emergencies,” Dr. Shobe said.

A Healthy Attitude Begins Early Alleviating fear of dental treatments can make a difference in whether a child grows into an adult with fear, leading to not going to the dentist at all. There are many of us who have a fear of going to the dentist, usually due to a painful treatment or to the sounds we associated with the dentist. Often our first visit to the dentist was at a time when we had a toothache, also setting us up for a negative perception of going to the dentist; thus, we associate pain and discomfort with the dentist.

“Consistent visits from an early age allow children to become comfortable in the dental setting, which can help them develop a

healthy attitude toward the dentist that can last a lifetime. Being a father of five, myself, I know how anxiety-producing a dental visit can be for a child and parents. Our office is designed with the comfort of the entire family in mind. From TVs to toys and video games, everyone will feel at home,” stated Dr. Shobe.

Pediatric Dentistry not only focuses on preventive care, but also on dental issues specific to growing children, including sealant and fluoride treatments, interceptive orthodontics, trauma treatment and habit management. Regular, routine check-ups enforce positive feelings, ensuring they will have no fear in later life. Dr. Shobe himself recalls having a negative experience at the dentist, which inspires him to make sure his patients have a positive visit from beginning to end. From the moment children and their parents walk through the door, Dr. Shobe and his team strive to make visits fun by having a comfortable and friendly atmosphere.

“As a child, I had some bad experiences at the dentist. There were times when I didn’t feel like I was treated like a human being. We understand that fear of the unknown is normal, and that through patience, kindness and education, those feelings can be overcome.

When our patients and parents feel like they are in a safe environment, anxiety disappears.

Kids are smart, and when they feel safe, they relax,” Dr. Shobe said. Introducing children to

the importance of daily oral hygiene, including diet, proper and regular brushing, as well as flossing every day, helps a child get into a routine and understand why taking care of the teeth is important; such behavior is modeled by parents.

Walking the Walk and Talking the Talk We all learn by example and sometimes that example can be a bad one, where we also learn from that, so showing your kids that you take care of your teeth can lead them to an understanding of taking care of theirs. It is recommended that as soon as the first primary teeth erupt in your child’s mouth, you begin brushing his or her teeth. Once your child begins brushing his or her own teeth, it is still important to go back and re-brush the hard-toclean areas. Making oral hygiene a family habit can also help in keeping that healthy smile for a lifetime.

The first visit and subsequent ones for your child to the dentist can either make them enjoy it and have a good experience, or set them up for a fear of dentists. First AnnuAl DAshPoP Music FestivAl

W

hile Winston-Salem is not widely known as a music capital, a group of students from Wake Forest University may have just taken a step towards making it one.

Students at WFU are some of the brightest in the nation, and while campus is centrally located within Winston-Salem, many students feel as though the connection to the local community is not as strong as it could be.

With that in mind, a group of students created a music festival known as DashPop which kicked off on March 27th–29th.

“DashPop is the result of an ultimate goal to burst the ‘bubble’ that we students feel Wake Forest has become,” said Georgia Hunsinger.

“Our plan is to bridge the gap that has formed between the Wake Forest student body and the Winston-Salem community through the mutual love of music and entertainment. I am a leader of the PR/Marketing team for DashPop, so my job has entailed working with the media and promoting our festival to the public. With my fellow PR/Marketing leaders, we formed and launched our social media campaign, ‘#whatisdashpop.’”

DashPop planning began inside the classroom at WFU. “The course is a product of both the entrepreneurship and communications departments, which were extremely supportive of this experiment,” said Hunsinger. “From 44 • forsythfamilymagazine.com

what I understand, the first year it is active, the course counts as an ‘experiment,’ which means next year it will need to go through the approval process to become a long-term part of the curriculum. With that, it counts as a three-credit ‘special seminar’ class for either entrepreneurship or communications per semester, so it earns six credits for the year. I just hope that this class gets approved to be a part of the long-term curriculum. It is certainly a different learning experience, but one that I would not change for anything. I’ve learned so many practical things about marketing and public relations through this course that I never could in a typical classroom setting, and that is a result of the hands-on experience gained by being in a class where you are producing something real and putting it out to the public.”

In the short time DashPop has been in existence, it has gained quite a following within the community. “Truthfully, the community of Winston-Salem as a whole has been quite interested in what we’re doing, thus making it a lot easier to gain support,” said Hunsinger. “Almost every person I've reached out to has gotten back to me either wanting a follow-up or wishing us the best of luck with the project and to keep them updated. I would say the trickiest part was just trying to build a

name from nothing; but among the 33 of us in the class, we’ve been able to use our individual connections and ties to the city, which have helped both in gaining support and promoting. We were able to get major sponsors on both the national (MailChimp) and local levels (Yes! Weekly, Paz and Thai Sawatdee) and they’ve been great in their generosity toward our project. Thai Sawatdee gave 15% off to any customers who wore their DashPop wristbands the weekend of the event; Yes! Weekly gave us an outlet to distribute our DashPop inserts; and Mailchimp has helped make things happen with their donation.”

The goal for DashPop is for it to become an annual event that brings together students from WFU and people in the community to share in a love of music and get the word out about local artists. “If there are any music fans out there expressing intrigue about our project and spreading the word about it to the point where it could become a desired annual event, [this] would help make the decision to incorporate this class in the long-term curriculum easier!”

Wilson Athletics Sets High, Yet Attainable, Standards for Young Athletes

ictor Hugo once said, “Each man should frame life so that at some future hour, fact and his dreaming meet.” What Hugo is saying is that dreams generally do not just happen. Achieving a dream is special, because they do not come easily. It takes hard work, drive, perseverance and, in some cases, a bit of luck. That’s why, when a dream is realized, it is such a triumphant moment in a person’s life.

The owners of Wilson Athletics not only realize this, they have dedicated themselves to aiding the young athletes of the community in accomplishing just that.

Wilson Athletics was the brainchild of Dave McConnell and Derrick Speas. McConnell was a coach and trainer in the Clemmons area. He had a strong following at the Clemmons YMCA, while Speas had a number of years’ experience in the same field. They decided to parlay that into even more success in the form of Wilson Athletics. “We realized that the facility at Wilson Park was not being used year-round and was only being used for baseball. We wanted all sports to be developed there,” says Speas.

The location also couldn’t be any more ideal for Wilson Athletics, as it is firmly planted about 10–15 minutes from both downtown Winston Salem and approximately the same distance from Davy County. This allows young athletes from all over the area to have the opportunity to train and reach their full potential by growing under Wilson Athletics’ athletics expertise.

It also allows these same individuals to benefit from something much more immeasurable—their passion.

With the sole purpose of helping young athletes reach their full potential and goals, Wilson Athletics’ owners, Dave McConnell and Derrick Speas, dedicate their business to showing youngsters exactly what they are capable of. Of course, it helps that Speas and McConnell carry with them not only a wealth of knowledge, but also a definitive experience in accomplishing their own dreams in the world of athletics.

Dave McConnell’s reputation is well known as one of the top football coaches in the area, and Derrick Speas was selected to be an Assistant Coach for the speed skating team in the Olympics. “I hope to inspire these young athletes by letting them see with hard work, you truly can reach your goals and dreams,” continues Speas. “Being a part of the Olympics was a once-in-a-lifetime thing. I wasn’t just representing myself, but also my community and my country, and to hear from Russian fans and other countries and then hear the chant of ‘USA’… it gives you goosebumps. To be there and have ‘Team USA’ on my chest, it brought tears to my eyes,” he adds.

By offering training and coaching for every sport, Wilson Athletics is posturing itself to be a valuable tool for those young athletes that choose to take their skills to the next level. In fact, Speas and McConnell are betting on just that. However, they are not just letting their experience do the talking; they are leading by example. “You can’t ask kids to work to achieve their own goals, if you can’t achieve them yourself,” concludes Speas. With this kind of drive and leadership, there’s no doubt, the sky’s the limit for the kids at Wilson Athletics.

Dear Mom and Dad…

Camp is Great!

his summer, thousands of children across our country will stretch those muscles of independence and embark on that most wondrous of summer adventures: Summer Camp. Parents will say their goodbyes and spend the next week worrying about everything from spider bites to broken bones, to bacteria in the lake water.

T

When it comes to letting go of sticky fingers and kissing smudged cheeks goodbye, I am an expert. My son, Charlie, has been an annual camper at Camp Hanes since he was a tiny fella at the tender age of 6. For the last two summers, he’s gone to camp for two-week increments with weekend stay-overs. And this year, as a 17-year-old, he goes to camp as a CIT (Counselor in Training).

After all these years of sending my son to camp, you’d think I’d have quite a scrapbook of his personal recollections of camp. But, nope! Not a one. The first five years of camp, I sent pre-addressed stamped envelopes, paper and pens. And like the toilet seat covers that I sent in his toiletry bag, everything came back totally untouched, albeit slightly damp from his pool towel.

After five years of waiting for a letter, I gave up. Charlie was too busy enjoying camp and savoring every moment to take time to write about it. But as a mother (and a writer), I’d love to have some treasured scrap of letter, stained with dirt and smeared with sweat that

documents a moment of my son’s camp history. Alas, it’s never to be. For he’s now going to be taking the first step to be a counselor, friend and mentor to the next generation of campers. It’s my hope that he will encourage younger campers to do what he did not… write those hilarious letters home and document memories that will be treasured for a lifetime.

Be sure, when you write to them, you ask questions about what they are doing, who they are hanging out with, what their favorite experiences have been. Give them questions that invite open, honest and, hopefully, hysterical responses!

If your campers write that they are missing home, missing you, missing the dog, missing their goldfish—it’s important that you encourage them to exert their own independence…even if you are crying yourself to sleep every night missing them! They deserve the right to figure out this whole camp thing, and either learn to love it, or walk away and say, “I tried it, but it wasn’t for me.” Either way— it’s a learning opportunity and a character-building experience that will carry them far!

Post Pregnancy: Appreciating the Beautiful Belly

or close to 40 weeks, there is love for the progressing rounded belly. Through her own touch, she can feel the tightness of her skin and the relief of pressure when her body eases into a chair.

Her skin undeniably radiates a glow of light and beauty. Focused on her feelings of discomfort and exhaustion, she cannot see how simply beautiful she is. In touching her, her beloved will ease the tension out of her feet, shoulders, and back, and hold her belly with light fingers in hopes of feeling movement. The baby may stir and shift when hearing a voice of his or her parent. It is a time for two to be fulfilled by the anticipation of new life. When the beautiful baby arrives, her body continues to surrender to the needs of her baby. Appropriately named “Post Pregnancy,” it is a time when life turns upside down. Daytime extends to nighttime, with two-hour feeding intervals. She tries to find time to eat, sleep and complete household tasks. In those moments when she can stand in front of a mirror, her only heart’s desire is to return to that pre-pregnant size and weight.

The miraculous event from conception to birth is a chapter that closes too soon. There is celebration for the birth of a baby, but not for the heroic vessel of a protruding belly, new thin scars or stretch marks. New mothers will compare their own transition to friends or the popular movie star who lost all her weight in mere days. She will feel somber in her appearance, desiring to feel pretty and curvy, all the while eyeing those former blue jeans. Doctors and family will mention those ever-important labels such as “post-partum depression” or the

“baby blues.” All she really needs is time to balance the hormonal changes that occurred following birth. More than two thirds of mothers admit to feeling “saggy, fat and unattractive in the months after giving birth.” Sixty percent claim their confidence was affected when they found their old clothes did not fit. While it may take as long as 18 months, she will go through phases, starting with convenient dressing, then managing levels of hygiene until she can shed her maternity clothes and feel feminine and independent once again.

Mothers may be surprised by the child who loves to rest his head on the warmth of her belly. It will become a way to calm his irritable moods or tired body. Immediately, he will become quiet in the comfort and peace by her softest place. This is more than just skin-to-skin contact, or smelling the woman that is his mother. The child is reconnecting to the place where he lived, a former home of voices and sounds. Pressing an ear, he will listen, and sometimes giggle, at what he hears. In those moments, she is pleased to know the one place on her body she is self-conscious about is still needed and loved.

What Do Grades Mean?

n one of the most talked-about young-adult series, Harry Potter, readers could appreciate the character’s worries about classes, studying, exams and grades. There is a certain honesty in viewing an “A” as “Outstanding,” a “B” as “Exceeding Expectations,” a “C” as “Acceptable,” and a “D” as “Poor,” while an “F” creates that “Dreadful” feeling. Today’s student, whether he or she is new to the classroom environment as a preschooler, or about to graduate from high school, understands that words, a letter grade, or a percentage are indicative of personal success or failure. How often do students ask questions such as, “What do grades mean?” “Why do good grades come naturally for some and are so difficult for me?” and, “How does this grade transfer into the real world?”

Every parent wants to know his or her child is doing well in school. While grades determine that prized status, the narrative report describing a student’s efforts often has a deeper value to parents than students. There is comfort to know a “C” corresponds to “great improvement on tests and homework,” or “taking the initiative to participate in class.”

Young students can learn from the wording as a way to improve the art of being a student. Jesse Martin, an avid reader and Lego fanatic of nine, shares, “If I get an ‘A,’ it’s ‘yeah,’ and Dad will be proud. If I get an ‘F,’ I am doing badly in school and I will get into trouble.

Grades do worry me sometimes. Most of my friends and me get good grades.”

As parents, do we ever think about how our children perceive their peers and themselves as a student?

Victoria Borachok, age 12, who is rarely seen without a sketch pad, said it well:

“Grades are something that labels you and tells you who you are.” Are children and teens aware that grades are an indicator of understanding?

Alongside peers, students are learning how to listen to a teacher and take notes, read for information, study, read and answer questions thoughtfully, and assess their understanding through a test, quiz, project, or writing assignment. Students also are learning the best lesson of all, which is making mistakes. In the elementary years, young students need to be taught how to “reflect” on their mistakes, so that, by the middle school years, they can perceive their occasional “low scores” as not a personal failure, but as a means to improve. Too often, students become disenchanted with the hardships of school, and forget to “reflect” and learn from those personal choices. There is never a “poor” or “dreadful” student, despite the letter grade. To achieve better grades, every child needs to learn effective studying strategies, such as creating flashcards, rereading or copying notes, correcting quizzes or tests, or listening to a class-assigned novel through an audio book.

Grades and the grading system are by no means perfect.

Parents and students love the teacher who grades by rubrics, shows fairness on deadlines and homework assignments, and seems to easily motivate his or her students to love learning. In another classroom, the strict teacher has great lessons to teach students about responsibility and accountability. He or she may not give second chances, but is fair, knowledgeable, and needed in our classrooms.

Today’s teachers will one day be replaced by tomorrow’s bosses or upper management, and the child builder or artist will realize that grades developed their character and work ethic. Create, Measure and Splash: Activities to Keep Your Children Busy This Summer

By Lisa S.T. Doss Without even realizing it, your child can follow written directions and learn about measurement, and even fractions, with just a few great recipes. In addition to helping with a meal throughout the day, he or she may want to experiment with a recipe offering hours of fun and creativity.

One kid-favored activity is blowing bubbles. Not only would your child learn about measurement, but he or she could experiment with a variety of recipes and ingredients.

Pinterest has wonderful recipes for GAK, silly putty, play dough, clay, finger paints, liquid sidewalk chalk, and even bouncing polymer balls.

The question may become, “Which one should we make first?”

t’s easy to welcome back summer’s long days and the thought of the kids spending more time outdoors, until you recall hearing the worst two words of all, “I’m bored.” If you are wondering how to keep your children entertained and active this summer, here are a few ideas that combine learning with fun!

Creative Projects Taking advantage of the outdoor splendor, children can gain knowledge of their environment by engaging in the following activities: By going to your local library, you can check out books about bugs and insects, or learn about rainbows or constellations. Children can paint pictures, create models out of clay, go on a nature scavenger hunt, or create an illustrated dictionary.

Teach children the thrill of growing their own food. Interest can be started in planting cantaloupe or watermelon seeds, or a variety of “sized” sunflowers. They can keep a journal of pictures and observations in their very own notebook or sketch pad. Take it two steps further, and teach your children about the compostable life cycle, and the benefits of composting.

Recipes The relaxing mood and easy schedule offered during those months of summer vacation can help children build confidence by practicing key skills. Time in the kitchen usually is a celebrated moment for children.

While summer is a great time to enjoy cold foods, children, with supervision, can learn to make “homemade ice cream in a bag.” From just a casual snack to a planned ice cream party, making homemade ice cream will come in handy this summer.

Splash One way to be assured children will enjoy the hotter days of summer is to provide a few water-related activities. Even these “science projects” should induce your children, and perhaps a few neighborhood kids, to want to participate. Here’s an opportunity to put your recyclable materials, such as cardboard, plastic containers, newspapers, water bottles and milk jugs to use.

Children Could Engage in....

• constructing a self-standing, functional water wheel. For longevity, encourage the kids to draw a design prior to building.

• creating a water wall on lattice fencing. One helpful suggestion is to punch holes into the containers in advance, so children can attach the containers to the lattice using twist ties with relative ease.

• designing a game around transferring a soaked water sponge to an empty bucket. One objective could be to see who can transfer the most water with speed.

Summer doesn’t have to be sitting in front of the television or driving from one kid-friendly business or activity to another. In the safety of their own backyard or home, children can learn a variety of skills or facts through creative environmental projects, measuring ingredients, or experimenting with water. Oftentimes, learning is most effective when children are not only observing, reading and experiencing, but having a good time with siblings, friends and neighbors.

op! The idea of a “secret hideout” has entered a child’s mind.

Excitedly, the words are passed along to a sibling, and the rush to gather items has begun. Then, to the parents’ amazement, the living room has been transformed into a fortress, comprising kitchen chairs, couch and bedroom pillows, and various sheets and blankets. Then, to great disappointment, the inevitable happens—the fort collapses! Undoubtedly, every child aspires to have a special place, right in their own house or backyard. What if the “structure” was permanent or could be quickly assembled, was inexpensive, and would create hours upon hours of time for children to play in safety? If you have ever considered building a tree house, assembling a fort or teepee, or raising a castle, this may be your moment to feel inspired.

Teepee Whether indoors or out, one of the easiest structures to assemble is a teepee. Six eight-foot poles would be needed. While this item could be purchased in a home improvement store, the adventure may lie in obtaining and de-barking the hardwood samplings in your own backyard. One of the most exciting aspects about a kids’ teepee is that your children could decorate the nine-by-twelve foot canvas, for example, with feathers, beads and painted designs.

Tree House Backyard tree houses have always been popular. In fact, some wistful adults are building their own special getaways high in the trees. A child’s tree house, on the other hand, can be constructed low to the ground by using support posts. Not only are you ensuring safety, but the tree will suffer little damage. Imagine your backyard tree house having a shady underbelly for a sandbox, a unique trap door for entrances and exits, and a bucket pulley system to send up afternoon sandwiches and drinks. It is the materials you choose, such as a making a slatted ramp or stair in lieu of buying a traditional rope ladder, using canvas for the roof, or designing your own climbing wall, that can make this structure most affordable.

Castle Mosquito-net canopies decorated with feathered boas, glow-in-thedark decals, or clip-on butterflies have become a magical way to encase a bed or establish a corner for imaginative play or quiet story times. In expanding the interior space, why not try to design a blanket-styled castle? The “eyelet screw” can be one handy piece of hardware that lifts this castle off the ground and provides side “peaks” to her bedroom or playroom. Additional materials could include a dowel rod, rope and ribbon, and four eyelet screws for the ceiling and side walls. For added enjoyment, older children would love to have a strand or two of stringed lights.

Today’s parents also are using their creativity to design sturdy hideouts for their children. One example is an “A-frame fort.” It would be perfect for any afternoon play session or night-time

Consequences

arenting is hard. Kids don’t come with how-to manuals. And when it comes to parenting our kids, one size does not fit all. All clichés. And all-too true. Each month, “Parenting Perspectives” will explore various parenting topics from the perspective of two parents who are at different stages in their parenting career.

This month, Willy and Denise both explore the topic of consequences. Willy is a dad to four children (one girl and three boys), ages 8, 10, 12 and 14. Denise is a mom to a 17-year-old son.

It isn’t easy being a parent these days, as it seems there is so much more trouble our kids can get into. The sad thing about the trouble that kids get into nowadays is that it can be permanent. I am always so saddened when I hear about a young person dying from drugs or alcohol-related accidents. When you read a book like Tom Sawyer, kids a long time ago got in trouble for not painting a fence; but today, the things kids are tempted to do can not only kill them, but if they survive, it can cause long-term addiction and other hardships.

Ever since my son was a toddler, the topic of consequences has made frequent and regular appearances in our conversations. I am the mom to a kid who has always marched to the beat of his own drum, and for whom “consequence” has often been an afterthought, rather than a forethought.

How do you teach your kids about consequences, then, in a world so full of treacherous dangers? I have found that letting my kids get to know people who have had to struggle with serious problems has been helpful. When I was a pastor, I often brought my kids along to meet people who were recovering from addictions, so they could get to know two things: one, people who struggle with addictions are normal, often wonderful people, who made bad mistakes in life, and two, don’t make the same mistakes. Often the people who are dealing with addictions are the first people to tell kids, “You don’t want to go through what I’ve gone through.”

I think when kids can see both sides of the situation, it helps them think past the immediate gratification..

My personal adventures in parenting have involved many deep, cleansing breaths. Whether it was when my son was a toddler and thought it was a good idea to use the window sill at his preschool as a balance beam, or in middle school, when he took his iPod to school despite my warnings, and it was stolen…we’ve had many conversations about consequences.

But I didn’t want to be the mom who always predicted doom and gloom. I’ve done my best to teach him that every action has a reaction. Some consequences are bad…we can make a bad decision and reap a negative outcome. Or we can make a wise decision and have a positive consequence.

With my son one year away from being a legal adult, I pray every day that the “think before you act” discussions will carry him far.

Like most teenagers, he is masterful at the knee-jerk reactions.

But with maturity comes the understanding of a reaction’s chain of events. Even now, as I watch him mature, I’m reminded that the consequence of these repeated conversations is a good consequence…the life lesson is sinking in.

The Mommy Diaries: Picking a Pediatrician By Emily Eileen Carter

I

will admit when I was nearing the end of my pregnancy and going through numerous checklists, I didn’t really understand the importance of selecting a pediatrician before the birth of my son. It just seemed like another thing to cross off my large “To-do” list.

Man, I am glad I took time to do a little research, because no one could have prepared me for how dependent I would be on my child’s healthcare provider during my son’s first year. From our very first visit to the office, days after his birth, to the many evening and weekend clinics we have rushed to for guidance on sundry colds, ear infections, stomach bugs and Early Mama jitters, our pediatrician and the staff at our clinic have been amazing and so supportive. I couldn’t have gotten through this first year without them.

We had heard that when you put kids in daycare they will be sick a lot that first year. That has proven to be very true. From the time my son entered daycare at 8 months until now, it seems like either he, my husband, or I have been sick. Needless to say, we have spent many hours in our pediatrician’s office, on the phone with nurses; and fortunately for us, my brother-in-law, Dr. David Rhyne (Pediatrician, Westgate Pediatrics-Wake Forest Baptist Health), has counseled us through many a night over the phone.

When you child is sick, it rips you apart. To see them suffering, in pain, uncomfortable, their smile dampened and the light dulled in their eyes as they are in pain, seems unbearable. As my husband has said on many occasions, “If I could take the sickness away from you and put it in me, I would.” (Usually that happened in the aftermath.)

I am so grateful for our pediatrician. She truly is amazing. She is calm, collected, knowledgeable, and does her best to not be hurried when she is with us. She seems to know just the right thing to say when I am feeling anxious, concerned, or overly worried about a topic.

I have said it before: “Parenting is the hardest job in the world.” It stretches you in every direction; it pushes beyond your threshold in ways you could never have imagined. When they are sick, you are up at night, listening to their breathing, agonizing over their cough, wiping throw-up from their nighty and your pajamas. Still, it’s totally worth it.

But because this is no easy task, it’s crucial to have a great pediatrician and team to support your through this time.

So, if you are a first-time pregnant Mama or someone recently moved to the area who is searching for the right pediatrician, here are a couple of tips for finding the right fit for you and your little one.

1)Ask friends, neighbors, church and family members who they recommend and why?

2)Decide if you prefer a larger practice with more doctors or you prefer a smaller practice with fewer staff.

3)Find out about the potential pediatrician’s office hours, after-office hours, evening clinics, and weekend availability to see patients.

4)Ask if they have nurse line for 24-hour support.

5)Meet your pediatrician in person and visit the office to see for yourself if it’s the right fit.

It’s a really big decision for any parent—picking the right pediatrician—as you are entrusting them with the life, health and future of your little ones.

The View from My Section...

Advice for the Class of 2015

D

epending on who you are, this is that magical time of year— Editorial

graduation! Whether it’s high school or college, there’s no doubt, big plans lie ahead. I was thinking recently about what small bit of wisdom I could share with 2015 graduates after reading an article that was written in 1997 by Mary Schmich, a columnist with the Chicago Tribune, entitled, “Advice, like youth, is probably just wasted on the young.” Ms. Schmich’s article included some of the most practical, common sense guidance I’ve heard. For example, the part I found to be most fruitful, “Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.” For those of us who’ve passed through this gate already, how correct is that statement? As her truism implies, how often we worry about things, only to find the real issues are often the ones we never saw coming in the first place.

• Understand that life doesn’t always turn out as you planned, as a matter of fact, it rarely does. This is because plans can turn on a dime; yet in spite of this, life always has a way of leading you where you need to be.

• It’s important to realize the path we start out on is just the beginning and not the ultimate journey. There are always twists and turns, and often we end up going in a completely different direction than where we were originally headed. This is because we change; our lives, the people in our lives, our interests and our priorities all change along the way.

• Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. For as the teenage son on the hit reality show Chrisley Knows Best (on the USA Network) says, “In order to be old and wise you must first be young and stupid.” It’s hard to argue with that one.

• Remember that when you’re feeling afraid and out of your comfort zone, this is when you tend to grow the most. The father character on the cancelled sitcom Surviving Jack (Fox television) took this a step further when he advised his son, “Anything worth doing in life is going to be scary.”

• And finally, know that life is like a giant jigsaw puzzle, where you can’t know what the total picture looks like exactly. Then, before you know it, it all begins to come together, one small piece at a time.

Hopefully this information will be helpful to some of you out there embarking on this next big voyage through life. Yet if history is any indication, as parents, we all know if our children are anything like we were, they'll also fail to see the ironic thing about advice if it’s given to the young, but only the old truly understand it.

As for my humble advice for the Class of 2015, here it goes, for what it’s worth.

Advice for the unpredictability of life: • Don’t worry that you don’t have all the answers right now. No one ever does.

• Conversely, don't ever think you have all the answers. Each day offers a new opportunity to learn. You just have to be aware, and keep your eyes and mind open for it.

As for me, Louis C.K. had something interesting to say in an interview on the Late Show with David Letterman (CBS Television). He said he told his daughter at the time, “You’re not going to get what you want most times. By Tami Rumfelt I’m not proud to admit it, but I’m a pretty judgmental person. Not long ago, during a conversation I was having with a friend, I was reminded again that I still struggle with this sin. He was sharing with me how he was feeling distant from God, like God had forgotten all about him. While I should have been listening to my friend and offering empathy, I was, instead, silently picking apart his faith in my mind. I wondered how often this person read the Bible and prayed and what he was doing to actively serve the Lord. All on my own, I had come to the conclusion that this person was obviously not serious about his faith, or he wouldn’t be having this problem.

Thank GOD, I didn’t open my mouth. Because in the midst of my self-righteous line of thinking, I was gently reminded of the times I had felt the same kind of distance from God that my friend had been experiencing. I also was reminded that I don’t spend nearly enough time in the Word and in prayer, so I had no business judging someone else’s spiritual life. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit put me right back in my place before I said anything that would have hurt my friend. He was already feeling bad about his relationship with Jesus. He needed consolation, not condemnation.

There are many verses in the Bible that warn us about the dangers of judging others. Probably the most well-known come from Matthew 7:1-5, where Jesus says, “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

Do you also struggle with judging others? Let’s pray that, when we’re tempted to look at others through judgmental eyes, God will remind us of the planks that are distorting our vision.

Minute for Your Minister “One Sided”

By Tami Rumfelt In most of our relationships, there is a certain amount of “give and take.” We talk and listen, serve and are served, love and are loved. This back and forth is the natural rhythm of connection between people. When relationships lack this mutual exchange, they are likely to fail.

So, why is it, then, that we very often expect our relationships with our pastors to be different? As church members, do we assume that because our pastor is paid to be the “leader of the flock,” we can treat our relationship with him or her differently than we would a relationship with a friend or family member?

Here’s what one church member, Hayley, had to say: “I remember calling my pastor one night to ask him a question.

When I asked what he was doing, he said, ‘I’m just waiting on you to call and tell me what you need.’ While I know his response was sincere, his words hit me hard. My pastor didn’t know what my need was, but he knew that he was going to help me. My pastor doesn’t just preach on Sunday. He is always taking care of his flock, as any good shepherd would. He is a teacher. He is a counselor. He is a protector, and a warrior for the cause of Christ. In a congregation our size, I really don’t know how he does it. I wish I did a better job of at least thinking of his needs—and maybe, even doing something about them! As a church, it seems like we all can do a better job of meeting the needs of our pastor.”

Musing About…

Boomerangs

I

still remember waiting for the mailman each day for over a month. For many weeks before, I had saved any leftover change from my allowance until I had enough to purchase the money order, made out to the Johnson Smith Company. This mail order company advertised in the back pages of almost every comic book I had ever seen.

With every issue, I would always complete my reading by scanning all of the weird, exotic and enthralling items I could easily purchase for very little, as long as I included $1.95 for shipping and handling. In one particular issue, I was enticed by the caption that described the sheer pleasure I would receive by purchasing an authentic Australian boomerang. With very little effort, I imagined going on a safari in the great outback (out back of my parents’--house) and taking out with this weapon from down-under the wild beasts that surely must have roamed the suburbs of Charlotte.

One day, the postman spied me sitting along the side of the road. Picking up the package for which he knew I must have been waiting, he tossed it to me with a wink and a smile. I imagined that he, too, must have waited for some enchanting merchandise from this company when he was a boy. I quickly tore open the wrapper and whipped out this piece of bent, flat wood. No sooner had I got it in my hand than I flung it with all my might, watching it as it cut through the air, spinning like a top. I watched with great anticipation for

it to return back to my waiting hand...but it did not. Instead, it continued on a trajectory away from me until gravity finally pulled it back to earth and it fell softly in the grass. Time after time, I repeated the steps, hoping that it just needed to be “broken in,” but each time led to repetitive disappointment. After a while, I came to the realization that rarely does anything return to you if you let it go.

The kindly old parson smiled lightly and asked, “Tim, when did you first realize that your parents loved you?” After a few awkward moments, I responded, “I guess I’ve always known that.” He continued to smile, but even more so as he quipped, “Why should it be any different with God?”

Just a few months ago, this understanding that I developed from my childhood plight was vividly challenged. I was going to the grocery store with a friend, Katie Easter, who, you may remember, filled in for me in the March issue.

Over the years, I have watched Katie mature from a lanky pre-teen to a confident and industrious young lady. As our journey was progressing, our conversation turned to that of faith. Katie surprised me by telling me that she remembered a pivotal moment in her faith development came from reading an article I had written for DevoZine, a pocket devotional for teens within my denomination.

Now many years later, this young lady, whom I did not know when I wrote the article, was relaying to me how it had helped her to better understand her faith in God. She unknowingly had returned a boomerang I let fly years earlier. Thank you, Katie!

The piece I wrote for this magazine was of my experience in struggling with claiming a faith in God when I was younger. It recounted that although I had been raised in a Christian home and as the son of a preacher, I never had one of those “slap you in the face, come to Jesus” moments as many of my friends had. Naturally, I began to wonder if there was something wrong with me. The article then

Many times for pastors, we speak what we perceive to be a word from God, but rarely do we know if it is heard. So, anytime we find out that something we said or did made a difference, we are renewed and reconfirmed in our calling.

Therefore, I encourage you to take a moment to boomerang back to anyone who may have helped you in your faith journey. Their spirits will be refreshed in knowing that their calling is not in vain.

RESTORE EVENT

n May 16th, starting at 5pm, the Clemmons United Methodist Church (CUMC) will host Restore, an extended night of contemporary worship. This service will differ from a normal worship in that there will be no formal sermon per se, but rather an overarching theme communicated through various songs, video clips and readings.

“Over the past year, many of our church attendees, at the close of our 9:45 a.m. worship service, kept commenting to me, “Man, I wish we could keep singing that song,” or “Wow, I didn’t want that to end,” said Clark Chilton with student ministry and contemporary worship for CUMC. “I took that as a sign from God, because I believe that a hunger for God like that is a sign of God’s presence and that we should follow that lead. Thus, the idea for Restore was birthed out of a desire for ‘more of God’ without time constraints, and for it to occur in an informal setting, where all people from all walks of life would feel welcome. There should be no pressure to give or be obligated to commit to something or to appear a certain way. Considering that few churches in our area offer anything on a Saturday evening, we felt God leading us to start this movement; also for those who work on Sundays or who feel uncomfortable attending a Sunday worship service. It will be a postmodern, multi-faceted approach to worship that I think anyone, religious or otherwise, will enjoy.”

Whether you are a member of CUMC or not, you are always welcome to attend a service, and Restore hopes to welcome anyone in the community who is interested in worship. “Restore is open to absolutely anyone,” said Chilton. “There will also be free childcare at [the] Restore event. There will be no pressure to give, look a certain way or be obligated in any way. We want this service, and God’s grace, to be the gift to you. Our main goal is to glorify God and pray that blesses people’s lives. We want people to know that God loves them right where they are, as they are, and not as they ‘should be.’ I think many young

people today are very skeptical of religion, and especially large religious organizations. Restore will be a judgment-free zone in which we all will be there for one purpose—to know God in creative ways and worship Him in spirit and truth. Our prayer is for people to find healing in God’s presence. I think we should use every means and medium available to get out the most important message of all-that God loves sinners (you and me).”

Contemporary worship seeks to touch those who may or may not respond to the conventional ideas of church service structure.

“Contemporary worship provides us with a powerful medium, because it has a live band, pop music sensibilities, and is very emotionally expressive,” said Chilton. “Ultimately, worship is worship, in whatever form, one is no better than another. It’s not the format that God is concerned with as much as the hearts of the people engaging in that moment. It is bringing to God our gladness, our thankfulness for resurrection; but also bringing our pain, confusion, questions and more, and laying them at God’s feet in trust and faith. It is about losing our lives in glorifying Him in order to find our lives. Worship is communal, about people being together with God. It’s not about a song, it’s about a life being lived for God’s glory, whoever you are and whatever you do; [about]…taking the holiness of God in our hearts and seeing that holiness spread across our land. I think singing worship songs is really just a fruit or symptom of a deeper God-given joy that occurs all the time and are just a hint and shadow of the brilliant expressions of worship going on in Heaven all the time.”

Xylitol

Most of us have been informed of the benefits of fluoride in preventing dental cavities, but xylitol is a lesser publicized, more recent addition to our armamentarium.

Xylitol is a sugar alcohol, similar to sorbitol and other artificial sweeteners. However, xylitol has the unique ability to combat cavity-causing bacteria. The FDA approved xylitol use in 1963, and it has been widely used in Europe to help reduce dental caries.

Xylitol’s effectiveness and safety has been demonstrated through numerous clinical studies. It is available in many forms, including gum, lozenges, mints, and syrup.

For children younger than 4 years of age, xylitol syrup is recommended, as gum or lozenges pose a choking hazard. The recommended dose is 3-8 grams of xylitol a day divided into 2-4 doses. Xylitol is a proven adjunct for moderate to high caries risk patients and may also reduce vertical transmission of the bacteria that cause cavities when used regularly by caregivers of young children. Common side effects of xylitol use include gas and diarrhea, which typically occur at higher doses.

n Friday, April 10th, the 11th annual Cheers! A Toast to Children’s Health, a fundraiser for Brenner Children’s Hospital, was in full swing at the Old Salem Visitor Center. Since its debut, this event has raised over $1 million for the children’s hospital at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Kaplan Early Learning Company was the Grand Tasting Sponsor, helping to bring over 100 wines from around the country to be sampled by some of Winston-Salem’s most avid food and wine aficionados. The 350 guests, who ranged from young professionals to accomplished retirees, enjoyed mixing, mingling and tasting, all while supporting a worthy cause.

New to Cheers! this year was The Cellar, a special reserve tasting room, providing an even more enticing reason to raise a glass to support Brenner. Wine Merchants Gourmet and Constellation Wines secured the reserve wines for The Cellar, which included a Robert Mondavi Cabernet that retails for $150 per bottle.

The evening offered something for everyone, even the nonwine drinkers. Guests also enjoyed unique samples from local microbreweries and delicious bites from some of the area’s best restaurants, caterers and specialty food companies.

The live auction, one of the highlights of the evening, featured a trip to California Wine Country (including 2 round-trip airfare tickets, a 5-night stay at two of Napa Valley’s exclusive resorts and many wine tastings) as well as a barbecue dinner cooked

A Thankful Mother & Daughter

I

wonder what kind of mother my mom thought I would be growing up. I carried my baby doll around by his hair, I was a messy cook, and I never had any desire to babysit. Many women ponder this question also if they learn they are to be a new mother. “How am I going to stack up to the mothers before me?” and most importantly, “Will my child be safe, happy and healthy under my guidance?”

Surely, some of our parental character is shaped by the parental influences in our lives. All of my immediate familial influences were raised in Mississippi and I, too, spent most of my childhood there. Though very different, my grandmothers both reflect a lot of the values my parents have instilled in me, and I thank them for that gift.

My paternal grandmother, Dorothy Elizabeth Chaney Schrader, was born in her home in Bovina, MS, in 1921.

Hers was a privileged life until her attorney father passed away in his 50s, forcing her to come home after 2 years in private college to help out financially. Thirty years and 2 children later, she finished her Bachelor’s degree and then Master’s degree at University of Southern Mississippi. Through her writing (she is a published writer and still receiving acknowledgements at 93 years old) and storytelling, she taught me the importance of creativity in a child’s life and has always encouraged me in any and all of my creative and academic endeavors. I tell my girls the story she told me She still corrects my grammar today.

My maternal grandmother, Lora Lee Ladner, was born at home in Riceville, MS. She, too, was a teacher bred from a large family, but lived in the country versus the city. Intelligent and independent, but limited in means, she always sought new experiences for herself and her daughters. She once drove to Washington D.C. in the late 1960s—just her, my mom and my aunt. No trip to my mom’s childhood home was complete without caramel cake, boiled peanuts and bottled Barq’s rootbeer. Shrimp were peeled until fingers burned, for homemade shrimp gumbo. No spring was complete without “helping” in the garden (AKA, making a mud hole in which to toss my brother) and no Easter recognized without pink- or purple-dyed chicks visiting the house. No doubt my own mother’s gift of making her visitors feel special originated from her parents.

My mother, Myra Ladner Schrader, was born in Gulfport, MS (I’m not sure she’ll allow me to say when). She started kindergarten when she was 4 and shared a room with my aunt until she went to college. My parents met on

a blind date and were engaged throughout 4 years of college, during which my mom attended Mississippi State University. She has a Masters degree in math and was an immense help with homework, even in my sophomore year of college! Mom worked off and on until retiring recently.

Now, she remains busy with her community, my father and their dog, traveling and with her 4 granddaughters (only 2 of which are mine). She has always been the epitome of the work ethic. She taught by example one’s responsibility toward a neighbor and how to try until one succeeds. My mom has always been my role model for being a giving and involved mother, while maintaining her own identity. She modeled a good relationship with my dad, was a loving daughter, and is a wonderful grandmother. Never a day passes that she doesn’t still worry about me and my brother, as she says, “You never quit worrying about your kids.” She’s my mom, my friend, and an inspiration. It’s a blessing to have my children love her as much as I do.

So thank you to my “moms” and my mother-in-law, who have taught me how to “mother.” My mother-in-law, Irene Schwartz, said that she was fortunate enough to be able to stay at home with her children while they were in school, but that it isn’t for everyone. She wisely commented that a woman is privileged if she has a choice in the matter. “Most moms try their best,” she said. I hope that my girls will know that I have.

Traditionally, Mother’s Day is a day to remember to thank our mothers or mother figures. And I do, wholeheartedly. But as I write, I want to take this day to say thank-you to the precious beings that have made ME a mother. My 6½-year old-daughter, who wrote me a letter saying I make her feel safe and happy, who is developing quite a wit, and is either a budding artist, World Cup player, or movie star. My 2½-year-old daughter, who thinks she can talk me into anything by ending her declaration with “OK?” and who finds immense elation in things like spying the moon, brushing her hair, or rolling in the sand—“I YUV IT!” I know God exists through the love I feel for you girls.

Though I’ve had wonderful examples, I will fall short of perfection.

Junior high may bring some mother-daughter conflict. Teaching my daughters how to respect themselves in the face of social media, a new type of peer pressure I never knew, is a bit daunting. I hope I’ve absorbed enough wisdom and humility to make it through to the other side and find that one day, my girls consider me one of their best friends, as I consider my mom. That they will want to vacation with me and will still appreciate my advice (even if unsolicited). That they will feel as I do, that “Home is where your mom is….”

Small Stories for a Big World

ately, I have been spending an unsettling amount of time as a parent wondering whether a choice I made with Sparkle Girl and Doobins was a good idea; whether I should be doing something that I’m not, or whether it’s best to just let something emerge in its own time.

As I ponder, something from my childhood may come to mind. For instance, as a child I read and read and read. In the fifth grade, my teacher—Mrs. Barfield—told me that as long as I paid enough attention in class to learn everything and take the tests, I could sit in the back of the room and read. So that’s what I did. I still think about what a wonderful gift that was.

When I went home at the end of the school day, I kept reading. There was a time when, on Saturdays and during the summer, my mother would sometimes come into my room, take my book out of my hands and kick me out of the house, telling me that she didn’t want to see me again until it was time for supper.

That was fine with me. I could play wiffle ball with the neighborhood kids in one of the vacant lots, or badminton in the Hendersons’ side yard. One day, my dad told me to hop in the car. We rode over to the ball field at the elementary school, where he told me that he had signed me up for baseball and would come pick me up after practice. For the rest of the season I played on the team. I never did come to enjoy it.

I think about that experience now that Doobins is 12. Although he enjoys playing outside, he spends more time at the computer than Garnet or I would like. Periodically, I think about doing something radical, such as signing up Doobins for fencing lessons, and then I

remember the summer I played baseball.

Certainly there are times when I do make Doobins do something just because I think it would be good for him. I think it’s important for him to become comfortable with the mechanics of everyday life, so I may tell him that we’re going to the grocery store.

Going into this school year, I did something that I might not have done if I had remembered something else my parents did. I insisted that Sparkle Girl, who is now a sophomore, sign up for a course that I thought would be good for her. I also thought that, once she got into it, she would enjoy it.

She doesn’t enjoy it and, for the moment, it doesn’t seem to be supporting her long-term goals. Pondering that misstep put me in mind of one of many things I appreciated about my parents. Aside from having me play baseball and kicking me out of the house from time to time, they made sure that my siblings and I took responsibility for making our own choices. They would talk through the pros and cons with us and then leave it up to us to decide. One year, when I couldn’t decide which school to attend, I kept wishing that they would just tell me which one to choose.

They didn’t, and, over the years, I have come to see that having us learn to make such choices was another gift. So, I resolved to be better about letting Sparkle Girl make her own choices in the future.

Often, I would like to have more clarity about the right thing to do in the moment. When I remember to stop and take in what wonderful people Doobins and Sparkle Girl are, and that they know they are loved, I see that everything is coming along just fine.

n Triad Park in Kernersville, the War Memorial Foundation is erecting a memorial and parade deck to honor the veterans of the Triad, called the “Carolina Field of Honor.” I was there on a field trip with my son when I first learned of the project. My husband is a 10-year Air Force and Army veteran who has done two year-long combat tours to Afghanistan; so, naturally, I was intrigued by the project.

Individuals: If you know of a veteran’s family in your community, reach out to them. Sometimes we just need a listening ear or anyone to recognize our service (not just the service of the veteran, but that of his or her family, as well). If you know of more than one family, consider introducing veterans and their families to each other so that they can connect and receive support.

Near the pavilion there was information about the project, and I was shocked to read this:“For generations The Triad has been renowned for their many women and men that serve in the armed forces. This becomes more evident with the year 2000 Census statistics, that show there are more than 150 thousand veterans in The Triad, the largest concentration of veterans in the State.”

Help the homeless: 12% of the national homeless adult population are veterans; 20% of the male homeless population are veterans. If these statistics accurately apply to The Triad, this could mean that 1 of every 5 male homeless persons you might see on the street corner is probably a veteran. Consider volunteering at Veterans Helping Veterans Heal, “A Transitional Housing Project for Homeless Veterans” in Winston Salem, or simply sharing a cup of coffee or a meal with the homeless person you see on the street.

My first thought was this: Where are they? And where are their spouses?

When my husband got out of the Army and we settled in WinstonSalem, his hometown, I didn’t have too much trouble getting assimilated in this community and making “mom friends.” But there was a large part of me that felt very alone, because none of my new friends really understood the turmoil that our family was going through in transitioning out of, and healing from, war.

I would love to see the Triad rally around its veterans and their families.

Here are some ways: Churches: Consider polling your congregations to see if there is enough interest to start a military/veterans support group, so that veterans and their families can connect with each other. If you already have such a ministry, please make sure that information is posted on your website, advertised in the community, and shared on social media, so that veterans can find the resources you provide.

Local businesses: Display signs in your venues that let military and veterans know that you are supportive of them. Consider offering discounts, or—if you already have an active duty military discount— consider extending that to veterans as well.

Donate: Perhaps you could donate finances to local veterans’ organizations, such as Easter’s Promise Therapeutic Equine Center, which is in the fundraising stages of opening an equine therapy center for veterans in The Triad. This will be a fabulous healing resource for war veterans—they just need the finances to make it happen.

This month we celebrate Memorial Day, the day when we honor all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. As you remember those men and women today, take some time as well to remember the men and women in this community who sacrificed years of their lives and now are attempting to heal from everything that they’ve been through. If you know of a military or veteran’s family, ask yourself what you can do to offer them support.

Signs with the themed-treat name really help bring the theme home and can be found for free with a quick Internet search.

These treats are perfect for May 4th, for birthday parties and play dates, and family movie night!

Just add some “Yoda Soda” (green punch or Koolaid), and you’re all set to fight the dark side!

Obi-Wan Kababies watermelon cantaloupe pineapple strawberries grapes skewers small star-shaped cookie cutter Directions: 1. Slice watermelon, cantaloupe and pineapple into one-half-inch-thick slices.

Words from a

Teacher’s Daughter

D

irected towards the upstairs bedrooms, a bellowing urgent question started the morning, “Are you ready?” To his frustration, the answer was, “in five more minutes.” Monday through Friday, starting in August and ending in June, my father heard those words from my sister, who was five years older, and then me. He drove us to school from our first day of kindergarten until that final day of high school. Year after year, our teachers knew us before we even walked through the door of their classrooms, and students knew as us as Mr. Thomas’ daughters. In this small town of Maryland with only two traffic lights (that I remember), our father taught generations of families in his industrial arts classroom. It was hard to drive through the school complex (or anywhere public for that matter) and not find his former students calling out, “Hey, Mr. T!” or parents and teachers raising a hand in acknowledgement of him. There are indeed challenges to being a teacher’s daughter; however, the rewards arrived with understanding and time.

Children of teachers put in the long days of school right alongside their parents. Half-days and Mondays meant teacher workshops or faculty meetings; yet, every day, while other children were going home, I sat in a conference room awaiting the bell to signify school was over. In a school with little teacher turnover, arriving as a sixth grader offered fewer anxieties than most children usually feel when transitioning to a new school.

In the most self-conscious teen years, there is perhaps more attention directed toward a teacher’s child. Without the reminder, he or she knows every adult is watching. I can recall a language arts teacher who said in front of the class, “If you get into any kind of trouble, I know your father.” And her words were blatantly honest. Sitting in our paneled station wagon driving away from campus, Dad shared selective comments from my teachers. Before I could talk about my day, he knew when I was having difficulty with close friends, or did poorly or excelled in a particular class. As he handled some sensitive topics with my sister present, he understood me more than I ever realized. He was the father who told me the facts and let me make decisions. While he, at times, worried about particular friendships, he gave me the chance to share my views. I felt trusted to make good decisions.

From the rotation of home economics, life skills, art and industrial arts, there was an energy among students to learn about technical drawing, how to use a variety of hand, power and machine tools, and to build useful items from wood and metal. The gruff Mr. Thomas had a natural talent to connect with his students by engaging them in conversation. He’d comment on a girl’s shoes or a boy’s favorite team, and called each of his students, except me, by their last name. Beyond the class, it was his own gift in the role of teacher and counselor that made his students feel successful, and eager to learn.

Having a popular parent in the school community was a unique experience. For 38 years, his instruction and presence across one marking period for three years still had substance and meaning to his students beyond graduation. Through social media, I am humbled when a classmate reaches out to remember those school days, and especially him. Even today, I hold the title of teacher’s daughter with great pride. There’s satisfaction in knowing your dad did his job well, and his lessons continue to live on in the hearts of his students and daughters.

Y

ou know that feeling you get when you’re on the next-tolast day of your vacation and the feelings you have are bittersweet? You’ve enjoyed time away from a hectic schedule and familiar environments, but you know you have to leave soon and go back to reality. Seniors in high school may be feeling this way, even though they aren’t on vacation. The end of their four-year journey through high school is just around the corner, and they may have to leave family, friends and their hometown for a new adventure.

This transition from high school teenager to college adult may be stressful and difficult, or a welcome change for others. This time comes with a crazy mix of emotions.

Unlike the emotions you feel on vacation, which probably only range from having a great time to just having a good time, the final emotions at the end of senior year include a wider variety of feelings. In just one week, you may feel excitement from acceptance to a college, disappointment from a college rejection letter, confusion over picking a college to attend and/or the anxiety and stress of trying to focus on academics when your mind is on your summer graduation trip. Keeping these emotions in balance has been really challenging for me and probably for many others who are still trying to decide on the future of their college education or life after high school.

The two most challenging weeks of my senior year were the first two weeks of April, when I had limited time left to make a college choice,

planning graduation details and tying up loose ends at school, so I can walk across the stage to graduate. While those challenging weeks were stressful, I know now that it was a means to an end—the end being ready for college in August. Everyone who finishes high school is faced with the decision of what to do next. If it’s not college, it might be whether to join the military or go to technical school, to find a job that’s best suited for them, or just to take time to consider other options. For me, while picking the right college was very important, I also realized it’s not the end of the world if I don’t fit in or like the college I chose for admission in the fall. Any senior that doesn’t make the right choice the first time can always choose to transfer or go in another direction. Even though this may seem like a life-or-death situation, I think high school seniors that trust themselves and realize that “while some doors close, others will open,” will handle the stress of senior year in a healthier way.

As my senior year comes to an end, someone else will be taking my place writing these articles. I realize that I will miss sharing my thoughts with the readers of this magazine. Just like the dread I feel at the end of a vacation and the end of my senior year, that dread is mixed with excitement and anticipation of the upcoming chapter in my life.

For those of you who have read my column I want to thank you for your support and I hope that if you have high school seniors at home, you are very patient with them at the end of their journey.

Like any budding artist’s studio, it’s clearly a place where students are not afraid to get their hands dirty immersing themselves in a work of art. Yet Miller has a loftier goal in mind beyond teaching brush strokes and pointillism. It isn’t enough for her that students’ artwork be beautiful—it has to be meaningful. Here, 7th- and 8th-grade students are working to create artwork which goes beyond the aesthetic to make a statement about life, and influence humanity.

These enterprising young artists entered their photographs into the Scholastic Art and Writing Competition in a bid for the Gedenk Award for Tolerance.

Participants were asked to consider humanity’s past mistakes and what role they can play in helping to build tolerance in their communities.

To prepare, Miller says she and her students discussed how “their actions affect others, their choices follow them, their religious views can unite or divide. Their actions can make a difference, and their art can make a statement.” Tying in the events of the Holocaust, the Rwandan genocide, and even 911, students were challenged to glean lessons from these horrific events and to use those lessons to teach others tolerance. Miller says of her

And I admit that my love for the story has carried into my adulthood. I think the story has appealed to me because it is so like a fairy tale. In fact, our main character Sarah, frequently talks about magic, fairies, princesses and the idea of the world around her as a fairy story.

This story is an iconic classic that should be on the must-read list for any little girl who dreams of fairy tales.

A simple, charming story, A Little Princess emphasizes the value of treating others as you want to be treated…that money isn’t the most important thing…that the richest gifts and possessions come from the heart.

Cinder Written by Marissa Meyer Genre: Fiction Age Range: 10–14 Reviewed by Rebecca Olsen Cinder is no one’s version of a princess. She’s a cyborg for one thing, half-human and half-machine, after a terrible accident she can’t remember took her foot and hand. She’s an orphan of uncertain parentage and a mechanic, completely lacking in social graces. But when the crown prince of the Eastern Commonwealth comes looking for someone to fix his android assistant, he sets into motion a series of events that send Cinder in a race to save mankind. Cinder may not just be the cure to the plague that’s been terrorizing the globe, but the partner the prince has been looking for. I thoroughly enjoyed this futuristic version of “Cinderella.”

By Gracia Burnham Genre: Non-fiction Age Range: Adult Reviewed by Trevor Minnix During a time of unprecedented chaos and confusion in the world, I found a source of strength and hope in the small yet insightful book called To Fly Again: Surviving the Tailspins of Life, by Gracia Burnham.

Gracia’s writing feels like you are sitting with your neighbor having tea. She is down to earth, and sometimes funny in her personal account of surviving being kidnapped and traveling through the jungles of the Philippines for over a year.

While being held captive, Burnham’s husband was killed. Gracia’s words are honest, sometimes heartbreaking, but also surprisingly hopeful and inspirational. She shows readers what it was like to be held captive by the Abu Sayaaf, and how God ministered to her in the day-to-day fight for survival. This book will give you hope for your struggles, and challenge you to listen to God in the midst of any crisis.

ac & Nelli’s underwent a major change this year!

During the past four years, it was becoming a favorite dining destination for many residents all over the Triad, but the owners knew it could reach so many more with a new location. When the opportunity arose to take over space in the Harper Hill Commons Shopping Center off Country Club Road, they knew they’d found the perfect solution!

“We are really enjoying our new, bigger location,” said Coowner Lori Shaver. “We have renovated the new space, adding a 32-foot bar with custom bar back. The bar top is made from a red oak tree we had to have cut down at our home a few years back. We had several of our tables made from the same tree. We really wanted to add some personal character to the new space, designing the bar area with a little higher-end look with fluted columns and crown molding.”

While the new space gives the restaurant a charming new atmosphere, all the favorites from the menu remain. “We have kept our menu pretty much the same and have added a few new items,” said Shaver. “We usually change up some items seasonally. We have brought back the Wing Night where guests can enjoy unlimited 35-cent wings every Monday night. We have kept our prime rib special on Friday and Saturday nights. Our prime rib is certified Angus beef, and people rave about it…those are very popular nights! We have added a $5 burger night on Thursdays as well.”
