Creative Critters Target age: 8 -13 Work your artistic magic in creating paintings, prints, drawings and sculptures of your favorite animals: dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, dinosaurs, horses, and more. We’ll also create 3-dimensional representations of our special furry, feathery, scaly or slimy friends.

RE-PURPOSED – ON PURPOSE Target age: 10-14 Instructor: Look at ‘junk’ a whole new way -- and get creative by re-purposing items into new, functioning pieces. Old light bulbs, glass bottles, scrap wood, worn books, bottle caps and corks are just some of the materials we’ll use to create inventive pieces of art and useful room decor.

Students will learn an overview of several well-known artists (their upbringing, accomplishments, techniques, etc.) and then will replicate one of that artist’s most famous pieces. Visual Arts Walk-In Studio for Adults Target age: Adult

Whether you are a tentative beginner, an experienced amateur preparing to go professional, or an art graduate returning to your true calling, open studio offers you time and a place to pursue your own projects and interests. An experienced artist-instructor is on hand to provide technical advice, support and critical feedback through informal, individual, and group critiques.

Creating the Scholarship Level Portfolio Target age: 9 - 12 graders

Relying on technical skill and output is not enough to create a portfolio that makes one’s work stand out from the pool of other applicants. In this studio session, the instructor will begin with an evaluation of the student’s current portfolio and suggest ways to develop a polished and individualized body of work. From that point, the progress will begin with an understanding of what a scholarship level portfolio entails. Students will have in-class and out-of-class assignments, group collaborations, discussions on digital documentation, slide presentations and weekly discussions intended to improve critique skills and the ability to

Open Figure Drawing at the Arts Mill Develop your drawing skills the way the masters did, working from a live nude art model. This is an opportunity to draw from a live model without instruction. One model provides a variety of quick and

Trading Card Nights Get involved in one of the biggest Pre-registration appreciated. movements around in art: artists trading cards! This will be a relaxed social environment with an emphasis on learning through sharing. Leave each month with a collection of new art by fellow artists. It will force you to get creative at least once a month, in a supportive, friendly atmosphere.

It’s a big bright beautiful world for everyone’s favorite ogre, Shrek, based on the Oscar-winning Dream-Works film. In a faraway kingdom, the green ogre Shrek finds his swamp invaded by banished fairytale misfits, runaways who’ve been cast off by Lord Farquaad, a tiny terror with big ambitions. When Shrek sets off with a wise-cracking donkey to confront Farquaad, he’s handed a task - if he rescues feisty Princess Fiona, his swamp will be righted. Only a fairy tale wouldn’t be complete without twists and turns along the way.

Beginner Songwriting Target Ages: Ability to play an instrument is helpful but Join critically acclaimed songwriter Mike Mangione as he teaches the art of songwriting in a fun and relaxed workshop. Zumba! Target Age: Teen/Adult

Come join the fitness party!! Zumba is the Latin inspired fitness phenomenon!!! Zumba fuses Latin rhythms and easy to follow moves into a dynamic workout. Zumba is a total body workout with toning exercises and fat-burning dance moves for a workout that’s more fun than it is work. Theater Games for Precision Movement Target age: 8-18 An introduction to Stage Games specifically developed for “blind” movement and timing. Students will engage in activities to develop their ability to “sense” their position and spacial relationships with other performers. Training will culminate in student-generated “scenes” to include slapstick activities like crowd scenes, the nearmiss, double-takes, and freezes. Invaluable skills for budding stage performers.

Dance Basics Workshop Target ages 5-7 Girls: Stretchable clothes and hair pulled Building on the basic elements of dance (time, dynamics, space, body), students will explore their own movement in class structures that begin to expand on each of these elements. Prakasha Yoga,

A Hatha-Soma Style (offering both private and group)

This class combines yoga- the eastern practice of uniting mind, body and spirit through meditation, breathing and classical asanas, with somatics. Experience classical yoga poses, breathing and meditation techniques. Build strength, balance and flexibility on a new level. This practice is designed to balance and tone the body, focus the mind and recharge the spirit. All experience levels are welcomed and honored as modifications will be presented. Students are guided to practice mindfully and within his/her capacity. 12

Somatics (offering both private and group)

“Somatics is a holistic and interdisciplinary approach that connects body sciences, and movement to help each person understand more about his or her body/mind and move toward greater integration.” This gentle movement modality, focused on releasing habitual muscle contraction, is designed to foster an internal sensory awareness to re-educate the body, releasing tension and promoting freedom of movement.

Private Reiki Sessions

Reiki is a stress reduction and relaxation technique from Japan that can also promote healing. It is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy” flows through us through a “laying of the hands.” Reiki treats the whole person leaving them feeling relaxed, peaceful, secure and with a feeling of well being. $55 per session

Private Thai Yoga

Thai Yoga is a dynamic bodywork therapy based on yoga and Ayurveda that was born in the temples of Thailand. The practitioner guides the recipient through a series of yoga postures while palming and thumbing along the body’s energy lines and pressure points. Together these actions result in a comprehensive full body treatment that relieves muscular tension, improves circulation, boosts the immune system and balances the body energetically. Thai yoga is performed on a comfortable thick cushion on the floor. Both client and practitioner are dressed in comfortable clothing allowing ease of movement. $55 per session

Group Thai-Yoga Class

Experience this special form of yoga that infuses restorative yoga poses and breathing with Thai yoga techniques. Designed to improve posture, flexibility, digestion and circulation, this restorative class will reduce both physical and emotional tension while working to remove blocked energy and provide a new found freedom in mind, body and breath. With the benefit of two qualified instructors during one class, you will move into asanas and then receive hands-on adjustments that feel as relaxing as a massage. Craniosacral and Reiki therapies will be offered during the class to give you the feeling of complete relaxation. Instructors: Julie Prochnow (Cyga Grafton,) and Sheri Bestor (Balancing Arts Studio)

Firefly Yoga

This Preschool Parent Yoga class is a wonderful way to spend quality time with your child. We will joyfully explore the art of yoga through story, music, and movement. Nurturing mind, body and the creative spirit, the young and young at heart will enjoy these special moments together.

Live Your Light Class

This Prakasha Yoga Class is designed for you to receive and give at the same time. Enjoy the hour of practice, knowing your full class tuition for that class is being donated to a selected cause. Do you have a non-profit organization whose mission is close to your heart? Submit your request to the studio, and if selected, invite your friends to the special class (open to the public) that will be designed to support the mission, through collective meditation, inspiration and the donation of the tuitions paid for that class. Teachers` Biographies Sheri Bestor is the Founder and President of North Shore Academy of the Arts, inc. She directs and produces musicals for Stagekids, teaches classes, and is the co-founder of the Arts Mill. Sheri is an author, having published four books to date and has sold work to national and local magazines. Her most recent book, “Substance Abuse, the Ultimate Teen Guide” was one of the inspirations for the “CreaTeen For Life” program launched at NSAA in the fall of 2012. Sheri is also a certified yoga instructor, owning and operating Balancing Arts Yoga and Well Being Studio which works in cooperation with NSAA and is located in The Arts Mill. There she teaches somatics-hatha style group and private yoga, meditation, breathing and other well being workshops and private sessions. Sheri is a Reiki Master and Level 1 Thai Yoga Practitioner. Sheri’s educational background includes a BS degree in Education and a Minor in English from the University of Wisconsin Madison. She has also earned a MA degree in Curriculum and Instruction. She is an experienced educator, having taught in a variety of positions including as an elementary educator in the Cedarburg School District. As an artist herself, she enjoys writing, practicing yoga, painting, playing the piano, and creating jewelry for her line called Moon Tide Designs. Naomi Bodine has taught Music Together® since 2001. She has been providing Music Therapy services to children with special needs, adults with developmental disabilities and the elderly. She has taught piano in private lessons. She plays piano, harp and guitar. The Center for Music and Young Children in Princeton, NJ awarded Music Together Certification Level 1 status to Naomi for outstanding achievement in teaching, musicianship, program philosophy and parent education. She has a in B.A. Music Therapy University of Kansas, Music Together Certification Level 14

1, Board Certified Music Therapist and Wisconsin Registered Music Therapist Dan Broderick holds a BS from UWMilwaukee and has 15 years of full-time teaching experience. He teaches 30+ students each year, totaling over 20,000 lessons since 1996. Dan instructs students on drum set, snare drum, parade drums and mallets. He teaches students as young as age 5 or 6 with a parent present, otherwise ages 7 and up. He describes himself as being a relaxed teacher who emphasizes reading to develop skills in listening, coordination and performance. In addition to teaching, Dan has more than 32 years of playing experience, including performances, tours and recordings. Caroline Danko is a certified Zumba instructor and ZIN member. Even though she is not a dancer by profession, music and dance has been an important part of her life. Being born in Santiago, Chile, she was surrounded by the Latin rhythms that inspire Zumba Fitness. Caroline’s background is in Business, holding a Master in Business Administration with concentration on Information Systems from University of Nebraska at Kearney. Paula DeStefanis is the Program Director of North Shore Academy of the Arts, inc. where she also teaches both adult and youth visual art classes, and is the cofounder of the Arts Mill. Paula graduated in Illustration and Graphic Design at MIAD with graduate course work with the Museum School in Boston. She has taught as the Milwaukee Art Museum, West Bend Art Museum, MIAD and the Wustum Art Museum. She has held many artistic positions such as gallery director, window designer, muralist and graphic designer. Paula exhibits regularly at galleries nationally and participates in juried art fairs. In 2012 she was the recipient of a Mary Nohl Suitcase Award. With those


funds she was able to travel to New York and exhibit her art at the international art show, Parallax in SOHO. In 2012 she exhibited in London, fulfilling a lifetime dream to bring her art abroad. She has her own studio called Paula’s Palette where she works on her mixed media paintings and wearable art. In 2010 she was elected to a 4-year appointment to the Village of Grafton Arts Board. She has served on the MIAD Alumni Council since 2011. Paula envisions herself as an art advocate for artists of all degrees. Susan Kamholz has trained at variety of schools including the Chicago Art Institute, The Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies of St. Peters College, Oxford University. She has found NSAA to be a perfect haven to not only perfect certain elements of her own craft but an opportunity to share her experiences through teaching. Meredith Kane Shimp – Is the artist behind “Junk Rethunk”, up-cycled art works. Meredith creates stunning pieces of art using found objects such as recycled bottles, bottle caps, wine corks, light bulbs and random salvaged materials. She loves painting and doing glass and metal clay work. She has been a member of the Arts Mill since its inception in 2011, and began teaching children’s art classes at North Shore Academy of the Arts in the summer of 2013. She is so grateful to have unwavering love and support from my husband, son and two daughters. Their tolerance of art supplies constantly scattered throughout the house is appreciated; their critiques, and invaluable support. Merlynn Kimmel earned a Masters of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of Wisconsin. She received a BA in EducationDance and is certified to teach dance to kindergarten through 12th grade. She has taught, choreographed and performed pieces at the University of WisconsinMadison, Concordia College-Mequon, and

a variety of dance studios. She taught and competed professionally in Ballroom and Latin Dance throughout the Midwest. Merlynn is also a certified Zumba instructor and ZIN member. She has taught Zumba at North Shore Academy of the Arts since 2010. She feels Zumba has enabled her to reach many people who would not otherwise participate in dance. Debbie Knuth Debbie has a bachelor’s degree in Marketing and is a state certified teacher for the elementary grades. She taught 4th and 5th grade in the Cedarburg School District for several years. She has been directing the NSAA Stagekid’s musicals for the past 9 years and has been the Associate Producer for NSAA’s musicals. Mike Mangione is a singer/songwriter and front man to the orchestral folk band Mike Mangione & The Union. He has released 4 albums since 2005 and has toured each one extensively across North America, Europe, Australia and the Philippines. Mike’s last record, Red-Winged Blackbird Man, received 4 out of 5 stars from the prestigious American Songwriter Magazine and called one of the hidden highlights of the year. In 2013, Billboard Magazine named Mike Mangione & The Union a band to watch while Milwaukee’s own Radio Milwaukee nominated the band for Album, Band and Song of the Year. Mike has been a reoccurring guest on Sirius Satellite Radio, WGN TV/Radio, TMJ4’s The Morning Blend, Milwaukee Public Radio and Radio Milwaukee. He currently resides in Cedarburg, WI with his growing family. Kathryn E. Martin is Lecturer at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) and the acting Head of 3D Design in their First Year Program. She received a BFA in Sculpture from The Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD) in 2001, and an MA and MFA from UWM in InterMedia Studies in 2005 and 2007 respectively. She has exhibited extensively, in solo and group shows throughout the United States and is proud to be the recipient of three public art commissions within the state of Fall 2014

With a focus on observing everyday, often overlooked objects, spaces and histories, martin concentrates on the given, formal characteristics and makes instinctive, calculated decisions to dissect, interpret, repeat and re-assemble their parts into a new whole. In doing so, she works to change inherent functions, make visible the invisible, and create connections. Recent projects can be found at: www. kathrynemartin.com Lisa Moberly graduated from the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance. While in college she began teaching dance classes and was exposed to Pilates. After graduation she enjoyed performing with professional companies in Madison and Chicago. While living in Chicago in 1999, Lisa became a fully certified Pilates instructor with over 800 hours of training and began teaching in Illinois. When Lisa moved to Milwaukee, she began teaching in various health clubs and dance studios. For the past eight years she has enjoyed teaching beginning through advanced levels of dance and Pilates at Danceworks and the Department of Dance at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Five years ago, after the birth of her son, Lisa began teaching Pilates and modern dance to academy level students at the Milwaukee Ballet School. At the same time she began her GYROKINESIS® training. This movement has been a perfect compliment to not only her dance students but her Pilates clients who were rehabilitating in physical therapy. Dance, Pilates and GYROTONIC® method are a great blend and allow her to continue to perform. Michael Pocaro has been a professional actor, director and all-around theatre artist for more than thirty years. A graduate of UW Milwaukee’s Professional Theatre Training Program (PTTP), he has performed or directed hundreds of productions. He has performed with notable Shakespeare companies country-wide, including Oregon, Idaho, California, Virginia, Colorado and Wisconsin. A certified Stage 16

Combatant, Michael has taught workshops and developed full productions with children of all ages. Locally, Michael has work-shopped and directed with First Stage Childrens Theatre, and directed several musicals with area schools, including Whitefish Bay High School, Fredonia Middle School and others. A National Contender with the National Forensics League, he has coached and officiated in local forensics tournaments. With a focus on theatre games, fully processed to illuminate important performance disciplines, Michael’s goal is to assist young performers to develop a sense of mutual trust and surrender through improvisation and ardent rehearsal. Tom Robinson has more than 30 years of experience performing, writing, and studying various styles of music, including Fingerstyle guitar, Jazz, Classical, Blues, and Rock/Popular music. Tom has more than 20 years of experience teaching music to students of all ages and skill levels. Tom holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree with a major in Guitar Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. As a instrumentalist and composer, Tom specializes in the following aspects of guitar and bass guitar instruction: performance, composition, improvisation, and applied music theory. Eva Schuelke has been teaching private voice and piano lessons for six years. She holds a B.A. degree in Music from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her students have competed and won Waukesha Idol, participated in WSMA Solo and Ensemble and WSMA State Solo and Ensemble. Her teaching philosophy is building confidence while gaining musical knowledge while having fun. She currently sings with Milwaukee’s 9 piece horn band Groove Therapy and the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus. Kari Slater is a Cedarburg artist who specializes in various mediums, her favorite being calligraphy. She works with many


local schools and organizations where she enjoys sharing her passion for the visual arts with children and adults. Her enthusiastic teaching style shows that she is a big believer in introducing young students to art materials they may never have an opportunity to experiment with. She has been with NSAA for 12 years. Dr. Stanislava Varshavski Finished her DMA degree at UW-Madison where she also worked as a Teaching Assistant for the Collaborative Piano Program. Her previous degrees include BM and MM degrees with Highest Distinction from the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance, as well as Graduate Performance Diploma with Highest Distinction from the Longy School of Music. In addition to her solo performance career she also is a member of the Varshavski-Shapiro Piano Duo, a professional piano duo that has won numerous competitions worldwide. She have appeared in many recitals and festivals across three continents. She also had the honor to appear with a number of well-known orchestras, such as the Radio Orchestra in Munich, Israel Chamber Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra, Moravian Chamber Orchestra and “New World” Symphony Orchestra of Miami.

Rob Wessel - studied guitar at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music for 9 years, in classes and lessons taught by the likes of David Hazeltine, Michael Sullivan, John Foshager, and Don Linke. At the National Guitar Workshop, Rob has studied guitar with Mike Keneally, Terry Syrek, Matt Smith, Harry Jacobson and other gifted teachers. Rob has been playing in local bands since the 80’s, as well as writing and recording music in his studio. Rob is an experienced guitar and bass instructor who has taught students in styles ranging from rock and metal to blues and folk as well as a recording and mix engineer for a number of local releases. Katie Williams began her dancing pursuit at the Trinity Academy of Irish Dance in Milwaukee, WI. After touring and competing with Trinity’s Company, her interests shifted to studying modern and other forms of dance at the Dance Academy in Grafton, WI. While attending Divine Savior Holy Angels High School, she was a substitute dance teacher at the Dance Academy. Last summer, she was an overnight camp counselor in Lake Como, PA where she taught everything from jazz, ballet, and modern to Irish, tap, and musical theatre. Currently, she is junior pursuing a BFA in Dance at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.

This fun and exciting event features hundreds of dancers, live entertainment, and celebrity appearances. Most importantly, all funds raised will support the life-changing art therapy programs at Camp Hometown Heroes for children of fallen U.S. service members as well as our life affirming visual, performing and literary arts programs at NSAA. The Arts Mill Gallery & Boutique is situated in the historic Grafton Mill and houses more than fourteen artists’ studios. These working studios (located on the 2nd floor) are nestled around a central boutique which features a variety of unique items from local and regional artists. We are open for events and private parties on our beautifully renovated 3rd floor.
