2019-20 NEBRASKA RIFLE

RIFLE GLOSSARY Air rifle – A gun that uses a .177 caliber lead pellet propelled by compressed air instead of a gunpowder charge. The rifles can weigh up to 12.12 pounds. Cleaned – A perfect target, in which the shooter hits a 10 on each of the 10 targets on the sheet for a score of 100. Can also be used to refer to a perfect match. Front sight – The sight attached to the end of the barrel of the rifle, holding the front aperture. Electronic targets – A target system that uses microphones and sound waves from the bullet or pellet going through the paper to send to a monitor on each point. Iron sights – Sights that employ no magnification. Kneeling – Shooting from a kneeling position with a sling and kneeling roll to support the position. Off hand – The unsupported standing position. Perfect match score – In air rifle and smallbore, 600 is perfect. Prone – Shooting from a lying position. Record shots – Also known as “shots for record,” those shots that are counted toward the match score, with “sighters” not included. Relay – One group of shooters firing the match at the same time. Shooting glove – A padded glove, with or without fingers, used to ensure the comfort of the non-dominant hand (i.e., a right-handed shooter wears a glove on the left hand) as the shooter supports the rifle.

Shooting jacket – The jacket is made of leather or canvas and provides support and pads the shooter to minimize the effect of pulse and recoil. There are strict guidelines regarding the thickness.

AIR RIFLE

Shooting boots – Boots designed for rifle shooting. They have the toe end of the sole and the heel cut flat for stability.

Course of Fire – Competitors stand and shoot lead pellets from .177 caliber rifles at targets 10 meters away.

Shooting trousers – Snug canvas and/or leather pants usually worn over running tights or sweatpants. They often have padded reinforcements sewn on both knees and the seat to prevent the slipping of elbows and knees when firing from the kneeling position.

Rifle – Air rifles can be either air or gas powered and weigh up to 12.12 pounds by NCAA regulations.

Kayla Gadeken appeared in all of Nebraska’s 15 events in 2018-19. She is one of Nebraska’s four seniors who will help lead the Huskers in 2019-20.

Time – Competitors have 75 minutes to fire 60 shots from the standing position.

Sighting shots – Practice shots taken before Perfect Match Score – A perfect match score of going “for record.” Sighting shots are unlimited 600 is the maximum for air rifle. and may be fired before the beginning of each position. Once a position’s first record shot has been fired, no further sighting shots are permitted. Sling – Adjustable strap with buckle adjustments and arm cuffs that provide stability. A sling is attached to the rifle and helps to support it in prone and kneeling positions. Smallbore – A .22 caliber gun with an iron sight used in competition. It can be customized with special accessories and/or alterations (barrel length and style, stock, design, etc.) to fit the shooter’s needs and comforts.

SMALLBORE Course of Fire – In smallbore three-position rifle, athletes fire .22 caliber rifles from the kneeling, prone, and standing (also called off hand) positions at targets 50 feet away. Rifle – Smallbore rifles may not exceed 17.6 pounds by NCAA regulations. Time – Competitors have 105 minutes for 20 record shots in the kneeling position, 20 record shots in the prone position and 20 record shots in the standing position. 2019-20 NEBRASKA RIFLE

HUSKERS START FRESH WITH NEW COACH The Nebraska rifle program begins a new era in 2019-20 under first-year Head Coach Rachel Martin. A former Husker All-American and the 2015 NCAA smallbore champion, Martin spent the past season as the assistant coach for Army West Point. Martin is joined by assistant coach Mindy Miles, a former TCU shooter. Martin and the Huskers will be looking to secure a trip to the NCAA Championships after missing out in 2018-19, breaking a streak of six straight topeight finishes. Martin and Miles hope to lead the Huskers back to the NCAAs in their debut season. “I definitely expect us to make the NCAA Championships,” Martin said. “I don’t say that lightly. I think it’s going to be hard and take a lot of work, but I think they’re up to it, and we’re going to help them get there.” The largest portion of the team are the seniors with four. The team will look to seniors Kayla Gadeken, Maddie Korthas, Samantha Peterson, and Bailey Powell for leadership. All five will be relied upon as the primary sources of leadership for Nebraska this season on and off the range following the graduation of NCAA Championships competitor Hannah Virga. Peterson returns in 2019-20 as a two-time All-American and source of consistency on the range. In 2018-19, Peterson was named second team All-American in Smallbore and second team All-GARC in Combined Guns. She has been a key competitor during her three years in Lincoln and as a senior will look to cap her Husker career with a strong season. Gadeken looks to continue her role as one of the Huskers’ most important leaders. During her junior season she emerged as a valuable contributor. Gadeken was a squadded member in 12 matches last season. She was also an academic All-Big Ten selection and earned a Sam Foltz Hero 27 Leadership Award. Powell made an immediate impact in her first season as a Husker, appearing in 15 matches. She returns as a key contributor in 2019-20 as one of the Huskers’ senior leaders. Powell will be counted on for consistency on and off the range. Korthas returns in 2019-20 as a valued member of a strong senior class. As a junior, she was a squadded member for three matches.

Senior Samantha Peterson will be relied upon for leadership as the only returning AllAmerican on the 2019-20 Nebraska rifle team. Peterson competed in 15 matches last season and had the highest average smallbore score on the team (580.53). Korthas is also a two-time academic All-Big Ten choice. “I expect the seniors to make up the majority of our scoring team,” Miles said. “For leadership, we have Maddie [Korthas] and Kayla [Gadeken] as team captains and they’ve been doing an amazing job. That helps us as a new coaching staff coming in. They’ve made our job a lot easier.” Juniors Mari Butler, Emily Cheramie, and Elizabeth Ewert are all looking to improve from last season. Cheramie competed in all of Nebraska’s events, while Butler and Ewert will be looking to become consistent parts of the starting lineup. Cheramie returns as a key contributor for the Huskers. After competing as a squadded member in all 15 Husker matches as a sophomore, she will be relied upon for leadership on the range. Cheramie was honorable mention GARC All-

Conference in Combined Guns in 2018-19. Ewert saw considerable action during 201819 and will look to build upon her success. She competed in both disciplines in five matches last season and will be counted on for leadership on and off the range. Butler hopes to compete for regular action in both disciplines as a junior. She was a squadded team member for five matches in 2018-19 and will look to play a part in Nebraska’s rotation. Sophomores Kinga Aletto, Elena Flake and Elizabeth Lorentz round out the list of returners. Lorentz saw the most action in 2018-19 as a squadded member for 10 matches. Aletto and Flake saw limited action in 2018-19 but will look to be regular contributors in 2019-20. One incoming freshman joins the returners. Macey Way (Colorado Springs, Colo.) will look to be a regular contributor to the team in her debut season after competing at the ISSF World Cup in 2019. Nebraska will open the 2019-20 season with a match against Ohio State in Fort Wayne, Ind., on Oct. 5. The next weekend NU will host the first home match of the season against West Virginia on Oct. 12. The Huskers will round out October by traveling to Colorado Springs, Colo., to face Kentucky and Air Force on Oct. 26, then Air Force and UTEP on Oct. 27. The Huskers will next host Army on Nov. 9. The next weekend, NU will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to face Memphis and TCU on Nov. 16, then Memphis again on Nov. 17. Nebraska will begin 2020 in Annapolis, Md., with a match against Ole Miss on Jan. 18, before facing Navy on Jan. 19. The following week the Huskers will host TCU on Jan. 25. The match against TCU will serve as Nebraska’s Senior Day. One week later, NU will travel to Raleigh to face North Carolina State on Feb. 2. The next week Nebraska will face Akron in Ohio on Feb. 8. Following two bye weeks the Huskers will compete in their NCAA Qualifier match in Murray, Ky., on Feb. 23. The GARC Championships will take place Feb. 27-28 in Memphis, Tenn. The NCAA Championships will be hosted by Kentucky on March 13-14.

GREAT AMERICA RIFLE CONFERENCE Nebraska joined the Great America Rifle Conference in 2004-05 after seven years as an independent program. The conference, which enters its 23rd year of operation, includes Nebraska, Army West Point, Kentucky, Memphis, Mississippi, West Virginia, Navy, Akron and North Carolina State. Before joining the organization, the Huskers faced nearly a month-long break between qualifiers and the NCAA Championships. As a member of the GARC, Nebraska can compete for the conference championship in the interim, allowing it to gauge its performance before heading to nationals. Since joining the GARC, Nebraska has finished as high as a programbest second place at the ensuing NCAA Championships. For more information visit the conference web site at GARCRifle.com.

Rachel Martin was named the sixth head coach in the history of the Nebraska rifle program on April 9, 2019. She begins her first season in 2019-20 after finishing her Husker career as a student-athlete in 2016-17. Martin brings extensive experience to Lincoln as a competitive shooter, and she also excelled in her first season as a collegiate rifle coach. Martin spent the 2018-19 season as an assistant coach at Army, where she helped the Black Knights to a sixth-place finish at the 2019 NCAA Championships, the program’s first NCAA appearance in four seasons. Individually, Martin helped Payne Nunn post the highest air rifle score in program history en route to second-team All-America honors. Martin is no stranger to high air rifle scores herself, as she owns the highest air rifle score in Nebraska history. She was also an NCAA champion and a seven-time All-American for the Huskers from 2014 to 2017. Martin earned All-America honors in both disciplines and was the 2015 NCAA smallbore champion. She competed in both disciplines at the NCAA Championship all four years of her career, posting a top-10 finish in both smallbore and air rifle. Her individual success helped Nebraska to four consecutive top-eight team finishes at the national meet, including a pair of top-five finishes.

After graduating from Nebraska in 2017, Martin moved to Colorado Springs to train at the United States Olympic Training Center. Martin has been a member of the USA Shooting World Cup team since 2013 and is a seven-time national champion. She spent more than a year as a resident athlete at the U.S. Olympic Training Center, during which time she also participated in a year-long internship with the 4th Judicial District Attorney’s office in Colorado Springs. Originally from Peralta, New Mexico, Martin was a three-time academic All-Big Ten selection and made the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll every semester of her career as a religious studies major and political science, global studies and national security studies minor. In addition to excelling in the range and in the classroom, Martin was also an active member of the community during her Husker career, as she was a four-year member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.

Five-time All-American and 2020 Olympic hopeful Mindy Miles was hired as an assistant coach in April of 2019. Miles was a three-time first-team NRA AllAmerican in the air rifle for the Horned Frogs from 2016 through 2018. She was also a twotime NRA All-American in smallbore during her career (2017, 2018). She finished fifth in the air rifle and added a third-place NCAA finish in the smallbore to help TCU to a third-place team finish at the 2018 NCAA Championships. Her 597.4 air rifle average as a senior ranked No. 2 in the nation, while her 583.7 smallbore average ranked No. 7 nationally in 2017-18. As a junior in 2016-17, Miles led the nation in air rifle average (596.53), including a score of 599 at Alaska on Oct. 8. She finished fourth in the air rifle at the 2017 NCAA Championships with a score of 596. Miles was the NCAA air rifle runner-up as a sophomore in 2016, while posting a season average of 594. She added the 2016 NCAA Sportsmanship Award. As a freshman in 2015, Miles became just the fifth shooter in NCAA history and the second at TCU to shoot a perfect 600 , which came in the air rifle at the Patriot Rifle Conference Championships on Feb. 8 to help the Horned Frogs to the team title. She added a second perfect 600 against Nebraska and Memphis on

Oct. 28, 2017. Miles was a four-time Patriot Rifle Conference champion. A 2020 U.S. Olympic hopeful, Miles secured a quota spot for the United States at the Olympic Games in Tokyo by winning gold in the air rifle at the Championship of the Americas in Guadalajara, Mexico in November of 2018. She won the competition with a score of 248.4 to lead a 1-2 finish for the United States along with silver medalist Alison Weisz. Miles is scheduled to compete again for the United States at the 2019 Pan American Games. She was a two-time U.S. team member at the World Championships (2014, 2018). Originally from Weatherford, Texas, Miles won the Texas State Junior Olympic Air Rifle titles in 2012 and 2013, while adding a smallbore championship in 2013. She was a Junior World Cup finalist in Suhl, Germany. At the 2013 Junior Olympics, she earned a silver medal in air rifle and a bronze in smallbore. She was also a bronze medalist at the Rocky Mountain Air Rifle Championships in 2013. Miles earned her bachelorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s degree from TCU in May of 2018 after majoring in strategic communications with an emphasis in public relations and advertising and a minor in business. She was named the TCU Breakout Athlete of the Year in 2015 and was the TCU Pop Boone Award recipient in 2017.

Josephine (Jo) R. Potuto, the Richard H. Larson Professor of Constitutional Law, has been Nebraska’s faculty representative (FAR) at the NCAA and conference level since May 15, 1997. In 2002, Potuto was named Outstanding Faculty Athletics Representative by the AllAmerican Football Foundation. From 200809 to 2011-12 she was president of the 1A FAR (FARs from FBS institutions). Among her NCAA positions, Potuto spent nine years (the maximum) on the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions (chair her last two years). She was one of three Big 12 Conference representatives on the NCAA Division I Management Council, and served on the NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championship Committee and an NCAA-

wide (all divisions) committee to advise NCAA staff on student-athlete issues and educational programming for coaches, staff, and studentathletes. She currently serves on the NCAA Interpretations Committee. A sports law expert, Potuto regularly lectures on sports issues in general and NCAA processes in particular. She has presented to, among others, the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics, the National Association of College and University Attorneys, the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities, and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, as well at numerous university and law college conferences. She is an expert witness in litigation involving sports issues and a media “go-to” person. Potuto also lectures and consults on risk management and on free speech issues. Potuto is a past adviser to the Uniform Law Commissioners Committee to draft a sports agent statute, has drafted rules governing search and seizure and hearings for the Nebraska Racing Commission, and also has written on issues of gender equity in college athletics. She has authored numerous articles on sports law issues. She recently completed an article on how baseball hitting informs legal argument. The article is in the National Baseball Hall of Fame archives. Potuto teaches constitutional law, procedure, federal jurisdiction, and sports law. She has been a visiting professor of law at the University of Arizona, Rutgers University, the Cardozo College of Law at New York’s Yeshiva University, the

Words that Nebraska’s athletic director uses to lead his programs and set the tone for building champions in competition and in life. William H. (Bill) Moos was named Nebraska’s Athletic Director on Oct. 15, 2017, and fully assumed those responsibilities on Oct. 23. Moos, who became the 15th athletic director in the history of the storied Cornhusker program, brought nearly 25 years of experience as an athletic director at three Division I schools (Washington State, Oregon, Montana) with him to Nebraska. More importantly, he brings an impressive track record of success in building outstanding programs, developing longterm relationships, and for doing what is best for his schools, its fans and most importantly, its student-athletes. “When you name the top three, four, five athletic programs in the great positions as an athletic director, Nebraska is in that same breath,” Moos said at his introductory press conference at Memorial Stadium. “I want you to know that my motto has always been, in the 25 years I have been a Division I athletic director and it will be here too is very simple - honor the past, live the present, create the future.” In his first six months at Nebraska, Moos made three coaching hires. He drew universal praise for hiring Scott Frost, the 2017 consensus national coach of the year, as Nebraska’s head football coach in December. Following the spring semester, Moos also hired Mark Hankins to coach the men’s golf team and Sean Maymi to lead the men’s tennis program. Nebraska made national headlines with the hiring of Fred Hoiberg as its new men’s basketball coach in 2019. Moos made another impact move with the hiring of former Husker Will Bolt to lead the baseball program, after Major League All-Star, Gold Glove award winner and World Series champion Darin Erstad stepped down from his head coaching position after leading the Huskers to the 2019 NCAA Tournament.

Moos hired Lisa Johnson to lead the women’s golf program after the retirement of long-time coach Robin Krapfl. He also hired long-time Husker assistant Paul Klempa to guide the nationally dominant bowling program after the retirement of the legendary Bill Straub, who led the program to five NCAA titles since 2004. Former Husker national champions Heather Brink (women’s gymnastics) and Rachel Martin (rifle) were also hired by Moos to lead those national championship-contending programs. In competition, the Nebraska volleyball team claimed the 2017 NCAA title just months after Moos was hired, before adding an NCAA runner-up finish in 2018. Both the men’s and women’s gymnastics teams finished in the top six at the 2018 NCAA Championships, before the men added a third-place team finish in 2019 - its best team showing since 1999. The bowling team has added top-three national finishes each of the last two years, and the wrestling team has produced top-10 NCAA finishes both seasons. The women’s basketball team made the NCAA Tournament in 2018, while the baseball team advanced to NCAA Tournament play in 2019. Nebraska also has continued its excellence in the classroom, producing nine CoSIDA Academic All-Americans over the last two years, bringing NU’s nation-leading total to 338 all-time CoSIDA Academic All-Americans across all sports. Moos came to Lincoln after spending seven-plus years at Washington State (2010-17). He previously served 12 highly successful seasons as the athletic director at Oregon (1995-2007). During his time at his alma mater, Moos wasted little time in making his impact felt in Cougar Athletics, spearheading a department-wide rebranding effort with Nike while securing a 10-year, $35 million marketing rights agreement with IMG College. In addition, the 2004 WSU Alumni Achievement Award winner gained Regents approval for a $130 million addition and remodel of Martin Stadium, featuring a remodeled press box with luxury seating, including suites, loge boxes and club room. Also included in the project was a state-of-the-art video board and an 80,000-square-foot football operations building that served as the stadium’s showpiece and opened in May 2014. As the dean of Pac-12 athletic directors, Moos was at the forefront of the conference’s procurement of a 12-year, $3 billion television contract with FOX and ESPN, a landmark agreement in college athletics. Under Moos’ direction, the Cougar Athletic Fund’s Annual Giving program saw an 81 percent increase in gifts while CAF donor members rose from nearly 4,000 to more than 7,500. Additional facility enhancements under Moos included a center-hung video board in Beasley Coliseum that was installed prior to the 2011-12 season, giving Cougar basketball one of the premier fan experiences in the conference. An indoor golf hitting facility was also completed in early 2013, and Lower Soccer Field underwent a major renovation making the venue TV-ready while also providing one of the best playing surfaces on the West Coast, along with the addition of lights and a new scoreboard. Other enhancements were made to the Moobery track facility, Bailey-Brayton Field, the basketball practice gym, Gibb Pool and the Simmelink Indoor tennis courts. In Moos’ seven years at WSU, Cougar student-athletes and coaches accounted for 805 academic all-conference selections, 130 all-conference accolades, 45 All-America honors and three Pac-12 Coach-of-the-Year honors. Moos served as Oregon’s director of athletics from July of 1995 to 2007. While at Oregon he oversaw a 17-sport athletic department that grew to national prominence during his tenure.Oregon’s annual athletic department budget grew from $18.5 million in his first year to more than $40 million by 2007, becoming 100 percent self-sufficient during that time. Under his direction the Duck Athletic Fund donor base increased from 4,930 to 12,290, resulting in an annual gifts increase from $4.1 million to $15.3 million. $90 million Autzen Stadium renovation in 2002, which added 12,000 new seats, 32 new suites, a new Club at Autzen and a new press box to the stadium. In his 12 years, the Ducks ranked first in Pac-10 football attendance 11 times, reaching 100 percent capacity in each of those seasons. During Moos’ tenure, Oregon athletics captured 13 Pac10 championships across six different sports. He increased opportunities for women by adding two intercollegiate programs, soccer and lacrosse, and negotiated an all-inclusive shoe and apparel contract with Nike, one of only 14 in the country at the time. From an academic standpoint during Moos’ tenure, Oregon student-athletes collected 722 academic all-conference selections, 34 Academic All-America selections, nine NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients and one NCAA Top Ten Award. During his first stint as a collegiate athletic director at Montana (1990-95), Moos created an academic support program and hired its first athletic academic coordinator, developed a facility enhancement plan that created more than $4 million in improvements, and lifted the school’s fund-raising efforts to show a 300 percent increase in private and corporate gifts. Academically, Montana student-athletes were equally successful as the athletic department achieved a graduation rate 20 percent higher than the general university enrollment. Under Moos’ watch Montana garnered 269 academic allconference selections, five Academic All-Americans and two NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients. Moos began his athletic career as an athletic administrator in 1982 as assistant athletic director at Washington State. He also served as the school’s associate athletic director (1988-90). At Washington State, he was director of development for more than five years and associate director for nearly two years, supervising all external operations. Prior to that, he managed and owned private businesses in Washington and Oregon for eight years. He was a student assistant football coach at Washington State for the 1973 season, then spent part of 1974 in Washington, D.C., serving as a government intern. Raised on a wheat and cattle ranch in eastern Washington, Moos attended high school in Olympia when his father served in the governor’s cabinet. Moos earned his bachelor’s degree in history from WSU and was a three-year letterman in football before concluding his collegiate career by representing Washington State in the 1972 East-West Shrine All-Star Game in San Francisco. He served as co-captain on the Cougars’ 1972 squad and garnered first-team All-Pac-8 Conference honors. Moos and his wife Kendra have three daughters: Christa, Brittany and Kaiti; and two sons, Bo and Benjamin.

Ronnie D. Green became the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s 20th chancellor on May 8, 2016. Prior to being named chancellor, Green served for six years as the Harlan Vice Chancellor of the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources. In this role, he also jointly served as the Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources of the University of Nebraska system. In 201516, Green also was UNL’s Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, the institution’s chief academic officer. Green received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in animal science from Virginia Tech and Colorado State University, respectively. His doctoral program was completed jointly at the

University of Nebraska and the USDA-ARS U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in animal breeding and genetics. Green has served on the animal science faculties of Texas Tech University and Colorado State University, and as the national program leader for animal production research for the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service and executive secretary of the White House’s interagency working group on animal genomics within the National Science and Technology Council. Prior to returning to NU, Green served as senior global director of technical services for Pfizer Animal Health. Green has published 130 refereed publications and abstracts, nine book chapters and 56 invited symposia papers; and has delivered invited presentations in 43 U.S. states and 21 countries around the world. Susan M. Fritz is the interim president at the University of Nebraska, having served as the executive vice president and provost and dean of the graduate college since August 2012 and as the associate vice president for academic affairs since August 2011. Before joining the provost’s office, Dr. Fritz was the associate vice chancellor for the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) and interim dean of the agricultural research

division. She also directed IANR’s international agricultural programs and is a former associate dean of the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and department head of the Agricultural Leadership, Education and Communications (ALEC) program. Dr. Fritz is a 1979 graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and she received both her master’s degree (1989) and Ph.D. (1993) from UNL. In 2009, she was inducted into the Nebraska Hall of Agricultural Achievement and is the recipient of numerous awards for teaching excellence. She completed a Fulbright Senior Specialist assignment at the University of Zagreb (Croatia), served 10 years as a North Central Higher Learning Commission Consultant Evaluator and was a 2012 Baldrige Examiner with the U.S. Department of Commerce. Dr. Fritz serves as a Fulbright Evaluator, a Food Systems Leadership Institute Commissioner and a Midwest Higher Education Compact Commissioner.

She assembled an average of 571.67 in smallbore and 580.43 in air rifle over the course of the season. Gadeken was also counted on for leadership off the range. She earned academic All-Big Ten honors and claimed the prestigious Sam Foltz Hero 27 Leadership Award in 2019. She was also a CRCA Scholastic All-American and a member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.

SOPHOMORE (2017-18)

Gadeken stepped into a leadership role in her sophomore season as Nebraska filled the gaps left by two graduating seniors. She notched season-high scores of 581 in smallbore and 588 in air rifle and contributed to the Huskers’ schoolrecord sixth consecutive NCAA Championships appearance. Gadeken impacted the team off the range as well by earning a spot on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.

FRESHMAN (2016-17)

Gadeken competed in both smallbore and air rifle during 12 matches in 2016-17, including the GARC Championships. Gadeken set personal records at the collegiate level with a 578 in smallbore and a 591 in air rifle. BEFORE NEBRASKA

Gadeken competed for 10X 4-H Club under her father and coach, Gary Gadeken. She advanced to the 2016 American Legion Junior 3-Position Air Rifle National Championships. She earned a spot at the championships after placing in the top 15 of over 1,500 shooters and competed at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., July 19-23, where she finished eighth. At the 2015 NRA National Championships, Gadeken won the threeposition air-rifle competition. She took second at the 2015 Women’s Air Rifle Junior Olympics in the 15-17 age range and at the 2015 CMP 3-Position National Championships.

The daughter of Gary and Amy Gadeken, Kayla was born Feb. 10, 1998. She has one sister, Amber. Gadeken attended Seward High School and is the first in-state recruit since Sheena Mahloch, who was a member of the Nebraska rifle team from 2008 to 2012. JUNIOR (2018-19)

Korthas competed eight times in smallbore and nine times in air rifle over the course of her junior season and recorded personal bests in both disciplines. She fired a score of 575 in smallbore and a team-leading mark of 592 in air rifle, both in the Huskers’ match against Coast Guard. Korthas averaged 565.13 in smallbore and 583.44 over the course of the season. She was also named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for the third consecutive year, and was a CRCA Scholastic All-American.

Peterson was counted on for leadership on and off the range. She recorded a personal best in air rifle (594) at the Gamecock Open and recorded five scores that were 590 or greater. The only returning All-American on Nebraska’s roster, Samantha Peterson will be one of the Huskers’ most important contributors. As a junior, she posted a career best in air rifle (594) and recorded five scores that were 590 or greater. In 2018-19, Peterson was named second team AllAmerican in smallbore. As a senior, she will look to cap her Husker career with a strong season.

As one of two returning All-Americans on the roster, Peterson took on a leadership role both on and off the range as a sophomore. She averaged 577.60 in smallbore and 586.87 in air rifle. Peterson, who helped fill the void left by departed All-Americans Jaycee Carter and Rachel Martin, was a key part of Nebraska’s school-record sixth consecutive NCAA Championships appearance in 2018. As a member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll and the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team, Peterson impacted the team off the range as well as a sophomore.

She served as captain during her junior and senior years under the direction of head coach Matthew McMenimen. She helped the unit qualify for the Marine Corps JROTC Service Championship all four years and the JROTC National Championship in three consecutive campaigns. Powell received a distinguished shooting badge from the Civilian Marksmanship Program.

During her sophomore season with the UTEP Miners, Powell led the team in averages for smallbore (572), air rifle (588) and aggregate (1,160) while competing in 11 of the 12 matches. She broke the 590 barrier in air rifle on five occasions and shot her season high of 593 twice. Her freshman season was highlighted by leading the team in air rifle, again averaging a score of 588. She set a school record in air rifle (597) when the Miners traveled to Nebraska in November of 2016, eclipsing the previous record (596) that was set by former Miner standout and three-time All-American Alix Moncada. Powell was named a C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medalist and a member of the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll in both 2017 and 2018.

Butler appeared in a total of three matches in both smallbore and air rifle. She posted a season-high smallbore score of 562 against Akron, and shot a season-high air rifle score of 580 (West Virginia and Army West Point). Butler was a member of the Buffalo Sharpshooters under the direction of Coach Dan Geurts. Butler was a club teammate of former Husker All-American Dacotah Faught. She also has close ties with former Husker Kelsey Hansen. A native of Casselton, N.D., Butler attended Central Cass High School where she was a member of the Honor Roll, National Honor Society and Student Council. Butler also ran cross country and was a statistician for the volleyball, girls’ basketball, softball and wrestling teams.

Cheramie competed for the Bluegrass Rifle Club under Head Coach Ted Carr, who is a former Kentucky Wildcat shooter. Carr has coached a number of All-Americans, including UK shooter Hanna Carr. Cheramie was a four-time National Junior Olympic Qualifier. She also won the 4-H state championship in air rifle three times and claimed the 4-H state title twice in both precision smallbore and precision air rifle. Additionally, she was an 11-time 4-H district champion and a fourtime 4-H district runner-up. Cheramie attended Lexington Catholic High School where she was a star in the classroom and in the community. She served as a Student Ambassador and was a member of the National Honor Society, Beta Club and Student Council. A native of Burnsville, Minn., Ewert attended Lakeville South High School, where she was a part of the National Honor Society and Student Council. Ewert also received the Rotary Student of the Month Award in September 2016, the South Suburban Conference Scholar Award and three Academic Excellence Awards. Ewert was a member of the volleyball team for two years. In ninth grade, her club volleyball team (Northern Lights) placed fifth at nationals. Ewert qualified for the National Junior Olympic Qualifiers in Colorado Springs, Colo., for six consecutive years, and she was one of 15 individuals to qualify for the 2016 American Legion Junior 3-Position Air Rifle Championships, where she finished 11th. Her team placed first at the 2016 U.S. Army Air Rifle National Championships and the 2016 USA Shooting 3-Position Air Rifle Junior Olympics. She was also a member of the team that finished second at the 2016 CMP 3-Position Air Rifle National Championships. Individually, Ewert was selected for the International Randle Team in Bristol, Ind., in 2016. She also placed first in her age group at the National Junior Olympics and

SEASON OUTLOOK (2019-20)

Elizabeth Ewert returns for her junior season as one of the Husker veterans looking to lead NU to new heights. Having set a career-best in smallbore (571) as a sophomore, Ewert will continue to provide depth for the Huskers in both disciplines.

SOPHOMORE (2018-19)

Ewert competed for regular shooting action in 2018-19 as one of three returning sophomores on Nebraska’s roster. Ewert competed in six matches, averaging 559.17 in smallbore and 576.40 in air rifle. She recorded a new career high in smallbore (571) when the Huskers faced Akron. Ewert was also counted on for leadership off the range as a CRCA Scholastic All-American and a two-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.

FRESHMAN (2017-18)

As one of three freshmen in 2017-18, Ewert competed nine times each in smallbore and air rifle over the course of the season, recording high scores of 567 in smallbore and 581 in air rifle. Off the range, Ewert was actively involved in the community and in the classroom, earning spots on both the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll (Fall 2017, Spring 2018) and the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team (2018).

Elizabeth is the daughter of Ross Ewert and Joy Simonsen and was born on Feb. 9, 1999 in St. Paul, Minn. She has one older brother, Sam, and one younger sister, Sarah. Ewert is majoring in biochemistry at Nebraska with the intent to go to medical school. She is a three-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall of 2017. She is a two-time Tom Osborne Citizenship Team selection. She chose Nebraska over TCU. In her free time, Ewert enjoys playing sand volleyball, water tubing and running.

Kinga Aletto will look to build on her strong freshman season in 2019-20. Her contributions as a squadded team member in both disciplines will be valuable to the Huskers as they look to earn a spot at the NCAA Championships. Aletto will attempt to better her freshman highs of 576 in smallbore and 587 in air rifle.

FRESHMAN (2018-19)

As one of three freshmen in 2018-19, Aletto competed for regular action as the season progressed. She recorded highs of 576 and 587 in smallbore and air rifle, respectively. Aletto averaged 567.25 in smallbore and 581.88 in air rifle over the course of the 2018-19 season. She contributed in match action a total of nine times in each discipline and was counted as a squadded member six times, including the GARC Championships. Aletto also made an impact off the range by earning CRCA Scholastic All-American recognition. She was also a member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.

BEFORE NEBRASKA

Aletto competed for Sarasota Military Academy under the direction of head coach SFC Riess Pellegrino. Aletto served as captain of the team and set nine of 11 school records in addition to being tied for another. She also holds the range record in threeposition air rifle at Montgomery Bell Academy in Tennessee. Aletto participated in women’s air rifle at the Junior Olympics in 2017 and the American Legion Junior 3PAR Air Rifle National Championships in 2018. During Aletto’s tenure at SMA the team went to three State Championships, one JROTC Championship, two CMP JROTC Regional Championships, two Montgomery Bell Academy Rifle Classic Championships and four Army JROTC Brigade Championships. She reached a final rank of Command Sergeant Major of Second Battalion.

Lorentz attended Seeley-Swan High School in Seeley Lake, Mont., where she was the president of the LEO’s Club and student council. Lorentz graduated as valedictorian of her class and served as a student trustee on the Missoula County School Board. Lorentz shot for the Hellgate Civilian Shooters Club under the direction of coaches Trace Weisenburger and Chris Lorentz. Lorentz qualified for the 2016 American Legion Three Position Air Rifle National Championships

Samantha Peterson capped her junior season with second-team All-America honors from the NRA in smallbore. It marked the second time that Peterson was named an All-American after earning honorable mention accolades in smallbore in 2017. She led the team in smallbore with an average of 580.53 and shot her season high (584) four times (Kentucky, West Virginia, Akron, Navy) in 2018-19. Virga competed at the 2019 NCAA Championships in Morgantown, W. Va. Virga, competing individually, fired 588 in the air rifle discipline to take 23rd place. Virga finished the 2018-19 season with an average air rifle score of 585.45. Nebraska kicked off the season at home against defending NCAA Champion Kentucky on Oct. 6. The Huskers fell short, 4,686-4,635. Peterson led the team in smallbore with a score of 584 to propel the team to an overall score of 2,287. Mari Butler fired a career-high score of 564. A 590 score in air rifle from Kayla Gadeken boosted the team’s 2,366 air rifle score. Elizabeth Ewert notched 580 to set a new personal best. The following weekend the Huskers journeyed to Fairbanks, Alaska to take on Ohio State on Oct. 13. Nebraska lost to the Buckeyes, 4,6584,656. Emily Cheramie led the team in smallbore with 581, contributing to an overall team score of 2,301 in the discipline. Rachel Yager fired a career-high score of 580. Nebraska put up a fight in the second discipline, outscoring Ohio State 2,355-2,352. Peterson posted the highest score for either team with 590.

The following day, the Huskers faced Alaska, dropping the match 4,693-4,662. Nebraska took three of the top five spots in air rifle, led by a career-high score of 581 from Bailey Powell. The Big Red’s final team score was 2,307. Elizabeth Lorentz (career high) and Samantha Peterson both fired 590 to bring the team’s overall air rifle score to 2,355. Nebraska traveled to Morgantown to face West Virginia on Oct. 21. West Virginia topped the Huskers, 4,712-4,660. Peterson’s mark of 584 paced NU in smallbore, contributing to an overall team score of 2,302. Peterson also led the way in air rifle with 592 to propel the Huskers to a final team score of 2,358. On Nov. 3 the Huskers took the range in Akron, Ohio, to face Akron and Morehead State. Cheramie led Nebraska’s effort in smallbore (2,311) with a first-place score of 583. Lorentz was out front in air rifle with 590 to lead NU to a final team score of 2,343. Nebraska placed second overall with an aggregate score of 4,656. Akron took first with 4,660 and Morehead State finished third with 4,634. The next day, Nebraska faced Akron. Nebraska won the match, 4,666-4,636. Peterson and Cheramie took the top two places overall in smallbore with 584 and 583, respectively. NU finished with a final team score of 2,316. Cheramie also led the team in air rifle, along with Lorentz. Both fired a score of 590 to bring the Huskers to a final team score of 2,350. Nebraska traveled to Jacksonville, Ala., to compete in the Gamecock Open, hosted by JSU. Match action was open to other universities, junior shooters and members of the public. The Huskers produced their best aggregate score of the season (4,669). The season high was propelled by a smallbore team score of 2,317. Cheramie was out front for NU with 582. Peterson fired a personal-best 594 in air rifle to drive Nebraska’s air rifle performance, resulting in an overall team score of 2,352.

The Big Red kicked off 2019 with a trip to New York, facing Army on Jan. 12. The Huskers won, 4,660-4,652. Peterson led the team in smallbore with 581 to drive NU’s team score of 2,314. Peterson was out front again in air rifle with a mark of 589. The team finished with an overall score of 2,346 in the discipline. The following day, Nebraska competed in match action against Coast Guard, defeating the Bears 4,660-4,556. Cheramie led the field with a score of 585 in smallbore, while Maddie Korthas fired a career-high 575. The Huskers finished with an overall team score of 2,213. Korthas led both teams in air rifle with a personal-best score of 592 to propel NU to a team score of 2,347. The Huskers competed at home the following week on Jan. 18 against Navy, defeating the Midshipmen 4,652-4,650. Peterson had the highest smallbore score on either team with 584. She helped Nebraska to a team score of 2,309. Peterson also led NU in air rifle with 590. The Huskers assembled a team score of 2,343. Nebraska returned home for Senior Day against NC State on Jan. 20. The Huskers overcame the Wolfpack 4,627-4,606. Cheramie led the team in smallbore with a mark of 575 to contribute to NU’s team score of 2,288. Cheramie also led the field in air rifle with 590 to drive the Huskers to a team score of 2,339. Nebraska traveled to Oxford, Miss., on Feb. 2 to compete against Ole Miss, falling short 4,6654,651. Cheramie was out front for the Huskers in smallbore with a mark of 582, contributing to an overall team score of 2,308. Powell led NU in air rifle with 590 to propel the team to an overall score of 2,343. The Huskers journeyed to Memphis, Tenn., to compete against Memphis the following day. Nebraska could not hang on in a close match, falling short 4,661-4,660. Peterson led the team in smallbore with 583 to contribute to an overall score of 2,313. Cheramie notched a personalbest score of 593 in air rifle to fuel NU’s team score of 2,347. Two weeks later Nebraska traveled to Murray, Ky., to compete in its NCAA Qualifier match against Murray State. The Huskers fell short, 4,671-4,661. Cheramie led the team in smallbore with a mark of 583 to contribute to a season-high team score of 2,322. Nina Radulovic (582) and Hannah Virga (580) both recorded season highs. Virga recorded another personal season high in air rifle, adding 593 to NU’s overall team score of 2,339. The Huskers finished second among nine teams at the Great American Rifle Conference Championships in Akron, Ohio, Feb. 21-23, after assembling an aggregate score of 4,666. Cheramie led NU in smallbore after tying her own personal best score of 585. She helped the team to a total score of 2,319 in the discipline. Cheramie also led the squadded team members in air rifle with 589, contributing to an overall team score of 2,347. Elena Flake, competing individually, recorded a personal-best score of 591. Nebraska finished behind West Virginia (4,715). Cheramie earned honorable mention AllGARC honors in smallbore and in combined guns.
