But every time Martha’s 10-year-old son, Mauricio, would ask her for a snack, for lunch, for dinner — her heart would break. “I felt sad,” she remembers. “We had nothing to eat, and children only ask for food without knowing that we have nothing to offer them.” Though Martha and her husband worked hard to farm beans and corn on the small plot of land they rented in their Nicaraguan community, they lost most of their crops. wo-year-old Omer, and his mom, Halima, had been through so much already. Horrific violence targeted the ethnic Rohingya minority in their homeland of Myanmar. Halima and Omer fled for their lives — leaving all they’d ever known behind — and made the long, treacherous journey to the Cox’s Bazar refugee camp in Bangladesh. Though they arrived with nothing but the clothes on their backs, they were grateful to finally be safe. And then, another tragedy struck: COVID-19. “The COVID-19 cases started to show up in our camp,” Halima remembers. “I was worried about my child. At midnight, I found my baby was so sick and suffering from fever.” Thank God friends like you had given gifts to bring health and wellness to those most vulnerable. With your support, FH had already established the first COVID-19 isolation units and medical centers at the densely packed (and disease prone) refugee camp! Halima reached out to an FH volunteer for help — and received immediate help and support! Water Has Come!

t’s a local custom that has become a family tradition — a morning ritual passed down from grandmother to mother to daughter for generations in this Kenyan community. A secret breakfast recipe? you might wonder. Or a special prayer to start the day? No. Day after day, year after year, generation after generation, the women in this community have dedicated their mornings to fetching water for their families. But recently a part of this ritual changed, thanks to you: How long it takes! Just a few years ago, women like Dere would leave home at 6 a.m. every morning like clockwork — carving out three hours of her day to bring home water. Parents in his extremely impoverished community in the Philippines struggled to send their kids to school, to put food on the table. Children often dropped out to help their families survive. Stress levels ran high. And 17-year-old Jhulian could feel it — not only in his own family, as his parents argued and he got caught in the middle, but in neighboring families, too.
