ith a record number of participants, a total of five new participants, Chinese Auction items too numerous to mention and a extraordinary number of attendees; the 7th annual Taste of Tavares was an astounding success, by any measure!

Returning contestants included ALS’S Dockside/Top Shelf, Café Basil, Honey Baked Ham, Pressed for Time Café, and Simply Desserts (now Café Carpe Diem). New challengers included Baytree Café, Butch’s Italian Grill, Hurricane Dockside Grill, Tavares High Bulldawg Café and Winn Dixie Deli. Tavares High School Culinary Department enticed the crowd with an aromatic scent that pulled them to the Bulldawg Café table. Chef Herrington and his students pleased everyone with their succulent Sliders; winning The Judge’s Choice and People’s Choice for Best Entrée. Winn Dixie Deli was another first time competitor who wowed the crowd with four selections from their new Wing Bar. Steve Roe and his crew presented the wings with a football themed presentation, winning the People’s Choice for Best Appetizer. The Judges favored Café Basil’s Sweet Potato Salad for their choice of Best Appetizer of the evening. People who claimed they did not like sweet potato, raved about Howard Leslie’s creation afterwards. With the appetizers and entrees chosen, that left everyone’s favorite … dessert. First time contender, Baytree Café walked away

with the Judges choice for Best Dessert with their awesome Orange-Chocolate Ganache. Chef Travis and Sheryl Klein presented their dessert with an appropriate autumn themed display. Ze Carter and crew defended their crown as repeat People’s Choice Award for Best Dessert. Café Carpe Diem impressed the people with their Carmel Cake. The melt-in-your-mouth delicacy won the hearts and tummies of the People. AL’S Dockside/Top Shelf took home the honors of Best Booth Presentation. Rodger Kooser introduced the attendees to a delicious fish selection from his Top Shelf. Pressed for Time earned the Chamber Choice Award for their awesome Greek Salad. It impressed people so well that Zac Ward ran out of his creation.Rich Moulton and his sister Viki Wellman, of Butch’s Italian Delights, provided the crowd with a timely presentation of turkey dinner. Donnie Covey and his wife Aubrey, of HoneyBaked Ham, served up a delicious sample of their ham. Dave Henson, of Hurricane Dockside Grill, surprised the audience with a scrumptious cake from their menu. Maggies Attic was on hand providing wine to complete the evening for the culinary aficionados Congratulations to all the participants. Thank you to the unsung heroes who make such an event happen. Thank you to the community for making this t he best Taste of Tavares ever!
