Spring Getaways

Ihad an entire introduction planned to talk about how nice the weather has been and how February's early spring has been such a blessing—but that's kind of irrelevant now, given the late February blizzard. 50-some degrees one day, and a blizzard the next—Fargo sure has a way of keeping you on your toes.

All the more reason for a spring getaway, am I right? Now, 'spring

getaway' doesn't necessarily mean flying down to Daytona Beach, FL, for the Daytona 500 only to get rained out in the "Sunshine State" and miss the race like I did; not all trips have to be that disappointing. Thanks, Mother Nature.

Instead, a spring getaway can be as simple as an Airbnb stay right here in Fargo. One thing I've learned in the last few years is that it's good to change up your routine and scenery

now and then, even if that means not leaving town. But with nearly 300 rentals listed on Airbnb in the Fargo area, we decided to do the heavy lifting and show you some of the coolest and most unique stays in town, two of which make an appearance in this issue, including what you see on the cover.

Let's talk about Milo's Place for a moment—this Airbnb, brand new to the market, is one of the coolest

EDITOR'S NOTE

homes I've ever seen. When you walk in you feel like you've been teleported to a fairytale world. Every room has its own color theme, not to mention there are some really fun easter eggs throughout the home, including a treasure hunt guests can complete with a prize at the end.

Whether you find yourself staying in on your spring getaway or not, remember to be present, hold your loved ones close, and enjoy the little moments.

But what really sets Milo's Place apart is its story—I don't want to spoil it all here, but it's sure to pull at your heartstrings. Plus, the work that owners Andrew and Jeremy Young are doing to support single mothers in need is another great reason to book a stay at Milo's Place.

THE WEYER COMPANIES WAY

WEYER COMPANIES IS BUILDING A LASTING, IMPACTFUL BRAND IN FARGO

ABOUT WEYER

Since founding Weyer Companies in 2012, Owner Shawn Weyer's mission has been to build a company run by a rockstar team. 12 years later, Weyer's paintbrush has made its stroke on the community, and continues to expand. We sat down with Weyer to learn more about what all Weyer Companies has to offer, it's culture, why its a great place to work, and more.

"There was just a need in the market for the trade that I know very well," Weyer said, who's had experience in the industry since age 13. Weyer's commitment was intense, with only about 15 days off in the first five years. However, this period was fueled by his love for the process and substantial support from his wife and others who believed in him to succeed.

Over the years, the vision for Weyer Companies has evolved. "I always strive for continuous improvement," Weyer said. His current aim is straightforward yet ambitious; to build a company that not only thrives under a remarkable team but also outlives his own tenure.

WHAT SETS WEYER APART

Weyer Companies operates under three main divisions: Weyer-for-Hire, Property Painting, and the Drywall Division. Weyer takes pride in the specialty applications of Weyer-forHire, which handles mainly residential homes varying in range, from accent walls to high-end detailed millwork finishing. Property Painting focuses on painting projects for rentals and property management companies, while the Drywall Division deals with large-scale new construction and repair work in both residential and commercial settings. Additionally, a management team oversees the company's subcontracting work, ensuring efficiency and quality across all sectors.

At the core of Weyer Companies' success is a focus on the people, both in the team and among their clientele. "Our competitive edge, I think, is really about the people," Weyer said. This people-first approach is integral to their full-service strategy, aiming to deliver a memorable customer experience, while helping team members reach their goals.

Weyer underlines the importance of reliability and integrity in their business practices. "I've always lived by doing what you say you're going to do when you say you're going to do it," he said. This principle has been fundamental to the company's reputation and growth, establishing trust and reliability as hallmarks of their service.

The foundation of Weyer's company culture is formed by these six core values:

Positive attitude, teamwork, the 'It Factor,' accountability, reputation, and trust.

15

A FUN, THRIVING COMPANY CULTURE

From the moment a new employee steps through the door, they are greeted with a family-like atmosphere. The company places a strong emphasis on creating a communal environment. A typical day starts with employees gathering in the break room, enjoying breakfast and good music, fostering a sense of togetherness before they head off to their respective projects. Teams, varying in size, work closely together, which reinforces the company's commitment to teamwork and collaboration.

Celebration and recognition are integral to the company culture at Weyer Companies. Weyer explains, "We celebrate milestones and accomplishments over the week." Other celebrations extend beyond the workplace, with company lunches, events like annual Christmas parties at Kingpinz, and more.

A notable aspect of the company culture is the focus on team bonding and reflection. Past examples include leadership trips, retreats, and extra full days off for the company Weyer also offers competitive benefits to his employees, paid time-off, and more.

Weyer emphasizes the significance of a positive attitude, urging his team to be uplifting, encouraging, and inspiring to others. "We all influence the moods. So be uplifting, smile, encourage, and inspire others," he said.

Teamwork is another pillar, with an expectation for team members to be reliable and collaborative. Weyer also speaks about the 'It Factor,' a unique attribute he believes everyone possesses, whether it be charisma or artistic talent. "It's my job to help bring that out," he said.

Accountability and owning up to mistakes are critical for growth and learning, according to Weyer. He also places immense value on reputation, seeing it as crucial to protect and build the trust that his company has established over the years.

Last but not least, trust, in Weyer's view, is the cornerstone of Weyer's values. He draws parallels with insights from Navy SEALs, noting the danger of high skill coupled with low trust.

THE ACADEMY: BUILDING A POWERHOUSE TEAM

As Weyer continues to grow, so does Weyer's need for new team members. In order to build a lasting team who are true experts in the industry, Weyer Companies has developed a training facility named 'The Academy.' This innovative program goes beyond traditional methods, incorporating videos and unique training approaches rarely seen in the industry.

Weyer also notes rewarding and lasting careers in these industries, especially the painting industry, which often gets overlooked.

"These are very sought-after skills—once you learn them, they don't go away... you can take them with you wherever you go," Weyer said. In fact, Weyer is looking to fill as many as 30 new positions in 2024.

Weyer's vision for the next five years is clear: to build on these core values, attract and nurture talent, and continue to revolutionize the industry, proving that there is much more to painting than meets the eye.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE THE TEAM?

Eye Health is Important to Your Overall Health at Every Age

Even if you don’t have problems seeing up close or far away, regular eye exams are an important part of maintaining your overall health at every age. Our eyes are not only our windows to the world but also a reflection of our general well-being.

6 months to 5 years

It's essential infants, toddlers, and children have regular eye exams to ensure their vision develops properly. We recommend children between the ages of three and five have at least one eye exam to assess their vision and detect any abnormalities while they're still growing. Your eye doctor will check for eye alignment, depth of field, astigmatism, and near-sightedness or far-sightedness. An eye exam can also reveal conditions that have long-term effects if left untreated and can impact your child’s confidence.

5 to 19 years

As children enter school their vision issues are often more easily spotted, whether they’re not able to see the board or have difficulty with online lessons. While schools often perform basic vision screenings, these do not replace a comprehensive eye exam. Visiting an eye doctor for a thorough exam during these years will ensure any changes in vision are corrected and any diseases are detected and treated early.

20 to 39 years

During these years, if you don’t wear glasses or contact lenses, getting an eye exam every two or three years may be enough. But if you’re a corrective lens wearer, it’s a good idea to schedule an appointment every year to ensure your prescriptions are up to date and your eyes are healthy. Ask your eye doctor how often you should get an eye exam, especially if you have a chronic disease associated with higher eye disease rates like diabetes.

40 to 64 years

In this age range you may start noticing age-related vision loss, such as difficulty reading. You may also experience reduced tear production. Attend eye exams every two to four years during this period if you don’t have existing eye problems. Keeping a regular schedule will help diagnose problems early. People with high blood pressure or high cholesterol may need more frequent exams.

60 and older

Once you’re 60 years old, you should get an eye exam every year even if you don’t have existing eye problems. Look out for peripheral vision loss, glare, or difficulty seeing in low light. Schedule an appointment to see your eye doctor if you notice any sudden vision changes or think you need a different prescription.

Straight out of a fairytale

Nestled near Downtown Fargo, Milo's Place feels more like a fairytale home than a rental. Packed with vibrant colors, easter eggs, and history, this rental has so much to offer. Take a walk with us as we browse this truly one-of-a-kind Fargo stay.

23

Walking up the front porch, you almost feel as if you're walking up to the house from Disney Pixar's "Up." Easter eggs of the Milo's Place moniker can be found throughout the home, hidden in rosemaling, clocks, trim, and coasters. Owners Andrew and Jeremy Young went all out to make Milo's Place a whimsical experience.

Because the house was previously a law office, the Youngs had to make some renovations after purchasing it in the fall of 2023. A kitchen, laundry room, and a proper bathroom were added, and one of two stairwells was removed. The Youngs worked with KBA Architecture and Radiant Homes to bring their dreams to life.

24 HOME BY | MARCH 2024

Walking into the main entry, you're instantly greeted with a beautiful open living room with crescent swivel lounge chairs, an upright piano, and a wet bar. Custom wallpaper patterns and rich colors theme each room, giving every space its own unique experience.

The TV room/study is adorned in a warm burgundy with large bay windows, a fireplace, 55-inch smart TV, and more. This room is also where the treasure hunt begins.

Down the hall, you are greeted with a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, laundry, and a full bathroom with a tiled shower. The kitchen, which is a statement piece in itself, features a tiled backsplash, an oven, stove, dishwasher, apron sink, and gold accents.

of the Coolest Things about Milo's Place 3

3. The custom wallpaper in the home is designed by Fargo artists and was inspired by some of the original wallpaper uncovered during renovations.

1. All artwork in the home is by Fargo or North Dakota artists. 2. There's a treasure hunt experience in the home.
25

Moving upstairs, the two bedrooms continue the trend of colored rooms. If bright and airy with a hit of Nordic woods is your vibe, you will love the first bedroom, which features a queen bed. If dark and mysterious is more your pace, you'll love the second bedroom, which is adorned in a deep blue, making you feel like royalty.

Don't forget to stop and browse the upstairs hallway, which features framed pages from a 1903 catalog that was found inside the walls of the home during renovation.

The Story Behind the Name

Milo's Place is a tribute to a special little boy named Milo, who touched the hearts of owners Andrew and Jeremy deeply. "We purchased this home when we were expecting twins through the process of adoption. When the adoption failed, this home was no longer needed for a family of four, so we decided to turn it into a kick-ass Airbnb," Andrew said. "Milo was the name we chose for our twin boy born September 1, 2022. His sister sadly and unexpectedly passed away during birth. Everything in this home's design, including the love and care that was put into every detail is inspired by the home's history, its era, and our (short) time and experience with Milo."

Support the Mission

"Our mission extends beyond providing an unforgettable stay; we are committed to helping single mothers like Milo's. Part of the profits from Milo's Place bookings go to local nonprofits and/or organizations dedicated to supporting single mothers in need. At Milo's Place, we invite you to experience a journey of heartfelt connections with nods to the present, past, and future. Whether you seek solace in its history, find inspiration in its design, or simply wish to experience the joy of giving, we warmly welcome you to be a part of this home's story."

Pembina, ND, native Lisa Tostenson is the newest interior designer on the block, excited to make her footprint in the Fargo metro. Lisa initially went to NDSU for dietetics, but when a friend introduced her to the interior design program, she knew she had to make the switch. "I'd say I've always loved interior design. My mom was an influence on me in that she was always into furniture and decor, and decorating our house growing up," she said. "Design has much creativity, so I was really drawn to it for that reason."

After graduating with her degree, Lisa worked in both residential and commercial design industries. With experience in both, it became clear to her that she loved working with residential clients in their homes. Her niche is "bringing your space together with a new and fresh take," while also leaning into DIY and giving homeowners professional help and tips for remodels.

However, it doesn't end there. Lisa offers full-service interior design, including furniture, decor services, and space planning, which she says is an especially popular service people are looking for with home interiors right now. Additionally, she offers interior design services for kitchen and bathroom spaces.

"I also offer design and paint consultations, which are super fun for me," she said. "Typically, we'll go meet for an hour or two and the client can ask any design-related questions to me. I'll sketch things on the spot for the client to see a visual of how to lay things out on a wall or floor plan. I also help with lighting selections and [provide guidance] for the DIY person who just wants a professional eye to help with their home."

There's a new designer in the neighborhood with a niche in DIY

1. Two ways to declutter surface areas like your coffee table or nightstands are to find decorative boxes to put things like remotes in, or you can buy a tray to house your nighttime necessities such as lotion, tissues, or a candle.

2. A good rule of thumb for hanging artwork is to have the center of the artwork sit about 66 inches from the floor. This is the average eye level of most people, therefore making the artwork height look right in your space. Of course, this will fluctuate in rooms with very tall ceilings or with unique ceiling and wall angles.

3. Not sure how to incorporate color tastefully into your home? Start by adding color to your dining room tablescape or console table decor. Go find colored candelabras or candlesticks for either spot that give you a suitable splash of color. Vases, stackable books, and botanicals are also great options to add color in a cost-effective, lowcommitment way.

Featured DIY office renovation

As a designer fresh into the industry, Lisa offers a unique eye on current and upcoming trends, offering potentially new ideas to those wanting a refresh of their living spaces. For starters, Lisa sees a shift away from light oak interiors, such as flooring and cabinetry, towards mid-tone woods. This transition marks a move to a more balanced aesthetic between dark and light shades.

Another notable trend

Lisa mentions is the use of monochromatic room schemes, which she deems both timeless and bold. This approach involves decorating a room in a single color, like plum, and extending it to furniture pieces in different textures, such as a velvet plum couch or a leather chair. According to Lisa, this style makes a statement but requires a specific type of person to embrace it fully.

Outside design, you love exploring the outdoors with your husband—where are some of your favorite places to go to feel refreshed and inspired?

I love anywhere with trees, water, and a good sunset! We were able to explore beautiful Sarasota, FL, and the surrounding areas recently that had dazzling white, shell-filled beaches and picturesque sunsets. Loved it!

You mention how you love serving your community through things like church— why is it important to you to give back? It’s a great way to take your eyes off of yourself and love others! So many people have given of their time and talents to make an impact in my life, and I want to do the same for others.

What's your personal favorite unique item you've ever incorporated into a home design? Why was it important to you/the client?

I love iconic pieces. I’d say it was the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman. This chair will never go out of style!

You mention you love hosting dinner parties—what new food/dish/dessert have you really been enjoying lately? I can’t say I repeat a lot of recipes because I love trying new recipes so much! But I do have a killer recipe for lasagna that is definitely in my top three favorite recipes list. Fill out the contact form on my website to get the recipe! (wink)

What kind of legacy do you want your design work to leave in the community? What do you want to be remembered for? The legacy I want my design work to leave is that I always created a one-of-a-kind look for each client that enhanced their personal design style and taste. I want to be remembered for how I deeply cared about my clients’ projects and that they had so much fun in the process!

Throughout the rental, you will see this beautiful blue reoccur, offering a pop of color to the modern feel of the space.

The lower level kitchen may not have the 10foot island, but it is still stunning with granite counters, ocean blue backsplash, stainless steel appliances, soft close cabinets, and a fun shiplap accent wall.

The open floorplan is ideal for gatherings or just being able to watch the 75" TV while cooking in the kitchen. Both primary bedrooms are also equipped with wallmounted smart TVs that pair well with the king-sized beds.

Enchanted Elegance

A Fairytale Redesign for a Young Family's Grand Seattle Home

Seattle, Christen Anderson of Christen Joy took on a project where a family was looking to create elegant quarters for their young children, all under the age of 10. They didn't want their grand home to clash with their childrens' bedrooms; They wanted the childrens' bedrooms to complement the grand home, feeling like an extension of the home with, a holistic design, so Anderson set out to reimagine what a child’s bedroom could become.

In collaboration with their little ones, the family worked on the heart of the design process closely with Anderson, bringing everything to fruition. Together, they selected core elements that are not fleeting trends but thoughtful selections, chosen for their timeless appeal and ability to serve as the backdrop for a childhood filled with imagination.

The result? Bedrooms that seem to have leaped from the pages of a storybook, where the lines between sophistication and whimsy are gracefully blurred.

Don't Just Like It, Love It

The Beautiful Bed Company’s custom-crafted furniture anchors the room. Each piece, from the bespoke bed to the charming nightstands, was chosen very carefully. With Beautiful Bed Company, we were even able to customize the mattress height—which is an overlooked detail, but an important one because it dictates how much of the headboard you see. It's these subtle considerations that can really elevate the space. We also added customized monogrammed pillows to add another layer of uniqueness and made sure to add sparkles of pink throughout the room to balance out the blue hues for the little girls.

The room also contains a cozy sofa sleeper, upholstered in a soft blue that echoes the wallpaper. This space offers a versatile nook for family snuggles or a restful haven for overnight guests.

When the project was complete, one of the little girls summed it up best, saying, 'I don't like it, I love it!'"

"The centerpiece of this enchanting space is the Schumacher Pyne Hollyhock wallpaper, a captivating floral motif in vibrant shades of blue that instantly draws the eye and heart. We selected this wallpaper with the help of this bedroom's little resident and I love it for its timeless charm.

After the selection of the wallpaper, the built-ins and crown molding received a fresh coat of paint that strikes a delicate balance between vanilla and warmth. We selected this color to complement the wallpaper's base color to ensure a harmonious blend that feels both fresh and inviting.

Purple Paradise

"This little girl's bedroom all started with her favorite color: purple. She fell in love with the checkered wallpaper, and things progressed from there. As with the rest of the house, the goal was to make this space sophisticated yet approachable for its young inhabitant.

The centerpiece is a sumptuous velvet-upholstered headboard, rich in texture and warmth, and matched perfectly in color with the wallpaper. The nightstands, with their hand-painted finish and classic lines, are future heirlooms, destined to be cherished and passed down through generations.

Perhaps the most amazing space in the room is the reading and sleeping nook, which offers a panoramic view of Puget Sound. Here, the bedding and pillows, custom-tailored for the room, complement the wallpaper perfectly, in part, because they are from the same company. The space is tied together with a delightful twist offered by the Citrus Garden pattern from Schumacher—a vibrant, whimsical print that dances across the window treatment and pillows to give the space a playful spirit.

The practicality of the space was not forgotten either— durability meets design with an indoor/outdoor fabric for the window treatment for any potential spills."

Ralph Lauren Inspired

"This little boy’s room is a modern homage to classic preppy style, with an athletic spirit reminiscent of Ralph Lauren's timeless aesthetic.

Central to the room's charm is the bed crafted by The Beautiful Bed Company, it's wood stained in a deep, rich tone that grounds the space. This handsome piece, coordinated perfectly with the room's enveloping and neutral green walls, screams tradition and quality.

The bespoke nightstands, also by The Beautiful Bed Company, are marvels of craftsmanship. Their detailed construction and custom finish provide the kind of charm one might stumble upon in an antique shop—and you'd jump to buy them if you did.

Dressed in navy sheets, the bed balances color and texture. The tartan fabric, sourced directly from Scotland, brings a global dimension to the room's design. Todd Thompson of The Recovery Room in Fargo has transformed this imported fabric into bedding that is both stylish and practical, perfect for cool Seattle nights.

Accentuating the bed are the leather pillows, which are reminiscent of vintage college football.

Styling the room's generous bookshelf is a collection of antique trophies, brass mementos, vintage leatherbound books, and presidential pieces—while the space also cleverly conceals toys and clothes behind its built-in cabinets.

Two trunks across from the foot of the bed offer practical storage for stuffed animals and extra blankets while staying true to the room's adventurous spirit."

The Bunkhouse

"Simply put, the parents loved their boy's room so much, they decided to carry the design into the bunkhouse. The room's design effectively uses space, with ample floor area available for children to play and host sleepovers."

The Oceanside Guest Room

"The king-sized bed and beautiful view are accompanied by matching nightstands painted in the same blue-gray hue. The bedding is carefully curated to provide a layered look, featuring crisp white linens. Plush pillows with a subtle plaid pattern add texture and visual interest to the bed. The simple yet stylish lamp with a white shade provides a classic touch, while the understated window treatment allows for unobstructed views of the picturesque Sound and landscape.

Overall, the bedroom's design achieves a sense of upscale comfort and aesthetic appeal, making it an inviting retreat for guests."

The Craft Room

"This craft room with its classic preppy aesthetic and bold plaid-patterned walls in shades of blue and white is a child's frame!

The tables and chairs in the space, with their monochromatic palette, provide ample workspace while also subtly complementing the room's lively walls.

The room is meticulously organized thanks to A Mindful Method from Seattle, which makes it easier for the children to locate their materials and, let their creativity thrive!"

"Overall this was an absolute dream of a house to work on and I am so grateful I had the opportunity."
