SPOTLIGHT

t’s hard to pinpoint exactly what Paul Miller, A.K.A. DJ Spooky, does. You could say he’s strictly a writer since he’s written for The Wire and many other publications. In fact, he’s working on a magazine with some of his friends called Origin Magazine. So, maybe he’s a writer? Well, there’s also all the music he composes. So is he a composer? You can’t forget about all the multimedia art he creates. So, what exactly does DJ Spooky do? It’s hard to say. Whatever he does, he does it great. We caught up with him to discuss what it was like working in Antarctica, what he’ll be talking about when he comes to town and what he’s up to next. DJ Spooky will be part of a Plains Art Museum exhibition that will focus on several of his works, including his new book, “Book of Ice,” his multimedia work, “Terra Nova” and his graphic art project entitled “Manifesto for a People’s Republic of Antarctica.” This project will run from Sept. 30 to Jan. 20, 2013. On Oct. 11, DJ Spooky will present a talk at NDSU’s Renaissance Hall. This talk will address his work, and also feature a multimedia performance showcasing his iTunes app for composing. On Oct. 13, Spooky will be part of a hip-hop and graffiti performance that will include hiphop DJ’s and performers like Ernest Rhodes, FM Beatbox and members of the Scratch Dungeon.

Interview fm Your work is so diverse. Describe

what you do?

DJ I like to call the Antarctica project a kind

of “acoustic portrait.” The way I see it, sound is one of the most beautiful, and ambiguous places in our culture. I wanted to make a statement about climate change from the view point of DJ culture and graphic design.

Describe the work you’ve done in Antarctica? Think of it as looking at the planet as a kind of huge record. A scratched, messed up and melting record…

What did you do down in Antarctica? I took a studio and went to several of the main ice fields, and made a batch of graphic design works, and then made a group of music compositions to respond to the same phenomena. I am interested in Antarctica because I have a deep interest in environmental issues and human rights. Climate change affects us all. I guess when you really look at

how rapidly the world is changing, you really have to face the fact that the “Anthropocene” era is simply a massive remix of the planet.

Talk a little bit about working in Antarctica. The challenges? Rewards? Hmm… Challenges, rewards - I got to get away from cell phones for a while…

Talk about how technology is changing the way music is composed and the way we listen to music. Absolutely! I think that we really need to understand that the way we think about learning instruments, and the way the last several centuries have changed the way we think about literacy (reading music notation, etc.) it’s now all about music interfaces, and the way they change the essential ingredients of a song. It’s all about the lessons we take from selective but ubiquitous amnesia. We play records to remember, then dismember songs. That’s what remixes are all about.

What do you have planned for your next project? Economics. Big Data.

Give us a little preview of what you’ll be talking about when you come to Fargo. My new book project “The Book of Ice” is all about composition as an art process. I never was planning on just doing music. I wanted to give people tools to explore the realm of sound in art. That’s what I’ll focus on - art, environment and digital tech.

Why is that message important and why should we pay attention to it? The only constant is change. Ignore that adage at your own peril…

OF A Where is your dream vacation, and why? I have always wanted to go to Australia! No big reason why, it just seems like it would be a good combo of adventure and relaxation. How naked would you get for a modeling gig? Ha! It all depends on how comfortable I am with the photographer. Where is the weirdest place you have ever slept? Hmm. I would have to say a bathtub. It’s surprisingly comfy! If a guy were to buy you a drink, what would it be? You can never go wrong with beer. How do you think people are going to react to the 2013 Q Girl calendar? They’re going to love it! Let’s just say hot girls, swimsuits and lingerie…you’re definitely going to want to buy one or two!

So go ahead, stop drooling at the pictures, get out there and try these awesome steaks. Photos and text by Andrew Jason and Garrett Laubach 39

Grilled Ribeye This steak is head chef, Torey Ostlund’s, play on the typical steak and egg dinner. This hand cut, Angus beef steak is topped with a poached egg and a maple bourbon onion relish. The steak alone is great, but once you cut into the egg and the juices spill out over the steak, it’s on a whole new level. The hash brown potato cake with caramelized onions and grilled asparagus are great complements to the already great steak.

WOOD FIRED RIBEYE What makes a steak dinner from Spitfire unique? All steaks are aged, hand cut fresh, certified Angus Beef brand as well as locally supplied. This flavorful ribeye is paired with a side of sautÊed veggies, and a skinless baked potato topped off with bacon crumbles and sour cream. All meat seasonings and rubs are original recipes. The meats are of the highest quality; supplied locally by Quality Meats and Seafood and hand cut in the restaurant. Another unique aspect is that Spitfire’s steaks are all tediously grilled over hard red oak on a wood fired grill. This grilling process, along with the lighter and cleaner red oak, fully extends the taste of the custom rubs and seasonings. This tender, flavorful ribeye is sure to satisfy your hunger for a real stick-to-your-ribs meal.

FLANK STEAK If you are in the mood for a fine, unique Italian steak dinner, Mezzaluna offers a one of a kind dish with a mix of flavors and ingredients based on classic European techniques and culinary ideas. This mouthwatering combination of flavors includes flank steak, goat cheese stuffed sweet bell pepper as well as roasted garlic and saffron polenta. This intriguing fusion is topped off with sundried tomatoes, fresh basil and fried olives. The steak is marinated in a balsamic vinaigrette with a touch of honey for 24 hours giving it a unique caramelized and pleasantly charred exterior.

GRILLED 14oz RIBEYE A steak dinner at Usher’s House is as idiosyncratic as the atmosphere of the restaurant. The two go hand in hand to create a memorable experience. A 14 oz. It pairs pleasantly with a glass or two of red wine and interesting conversation.

10oz FILET MIGNOIN This is one of the softest, most tender steaks in Fargo-Moorhead. Order it medium rare and it will cut like butter. They only use the highest quality certified Angus beef for their steaks. Head chef, Kyle Marden, cooks the filet in a broiler for eight to ten minutes at 1,000 degrees. The outcome is a crispy outside but succulent inside. You can get it in one of their six signature rubs: Basic, Texas, Kansas City, Jamaican, Puerto Rican or Mediterranean. It comes garnished with Rosemary and fried onion chips so it looks almost as good as it tastes.

DAVID

I’d make a lame Maureen McGovern comment right now, but it would both date me and be lame, so forget I even brought the association up. (Apologies to Ms. McGovern if you’re reading this.) That being said…what’s your deal?! Start watching movies about forbidden romance vs. “the nice guy,” and pay attention this time! It NEVER works out! The bad boy in 20 years will still be thinking that acting the callous tough guy works, as he reattaches his sweatpants with a zip-tie on the front porch of his uncle’s sweetass double wide he inherited when, said uncle, gave up the ghost in that tragic accident, lighting his smokes off the oxygen tank with the ‘strike anywhere’ match, which later people got sued by the family because, well, the package clearly said ‘strike anywhere’. Is that what you want Brit!?? Is that why Mom n’ Dad worked so hard to make a life for you so you could decide to fix a dumbass? Negative ghostrider…the pattern is full of dumbass bad boys. Go with the guy that treats you like a lady and respects you. And THEN get a sweet-ass double-wide…some of them are pretty darn nice nowadays. 52

[QUESTION]

Hey Guys, I’m torn between two men. One of the guys is a rebel, has tats and I love the challenge of taming him. The other is a total nerd, but he makes great money. He is stable and spoils me. I love it. I know I need to make a choice! What should I do?

Brit

[SHE SAID]

Hey Brit,

Thanks for writing us! Um, I ain’t say’n you a gold digger BUT… JK! OK, let’s be honest, as much as we want to change someone, it doesn’t work. Some people change for a short period of time, but trust me, it won’t last long. Don’t think you can get with “the rebel” and he is going to be tamed. Also, if you love being spoiled that could fade or get old after awhile. Basically what I am saying is you need to look deeper than all of the “stuff”… You need get to know both of them on a different level and see who you’re most compatible with for a long term relationship. If you just want to have fun, then keep doing what you’re doing, but know it will all come crashing down at some point. Now that I just turned into “Debbie Downer”…I wish you the best. HALLOWEEN 2012

HALLOWEEN

The FM Paranormal is dedicated to finding what goes bump in the night. This group has been around since 2007 and has conducted several investigations to supposedly haunted places around Fargo-Moorhead. We sat down with FM Paranormal founder, Charles Dosh, to discuss the five most haunted places in Fargo-Moorhead. Go ahead, read on‌If you dare. (Mwahahaha)

HAUNTED... 1. Haunted Farm South of Moorhead Everyone knows that this haunted farm puts on a good show for visitors around Halloween. However, few know that some of the real terror takes place when everyone goes home. According to Dosh, there used to be a train stop there and the house used to be a brothel. An unknown number of people died there in the past, including many children and according to Dosh, there are still a number of unmarked graves throughout the farm. A few years ago, Dosh and his team investigated the farm along with WDAY. He reported that while they were filming they heard footsteps on the floor above them although nobody else was in the house. While Dosh was sitting with another investigator he said, “Tonight’s going to be a bust. I hope something happens.” At that exact moment, the table lifted up.

2. Trollwood Park Again, according to Dosh, there used to be a Pioneer cemetery at Trollwood Park but as of recently they’ve began to pull up the graves because of flooding. Whenever you begin disturbing gravesites, there will be a lot more paranormal activity. (Hey, we wouldn’t like our eternal resting spots disturbed either.) When FM Paranormal went out there they captured many EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomenons.) Some of the things they’ve captured on the EVPs include: Somebody saying, “Get out of here,” somebody whispering, “I can be famous” and when they were talking about people calling 911 they heard a girl say, “I didn’t call them.” 3. South Fargo Home This house was FM Paranormal’s first investigation in 2007. The house was abandoned because both of the owners had just died. One of

the relatives of the passed away owners was with them. While they were there they picked up an EVP of something saying that relative’s name. They also have a video of one of the investigators, who was wearing a cross around his neck. While talking to someone the cross began to rise on its own. They don’t know a lot of the history behind the house but they do know that the wife died in the hospital and a year later, almost to the day, the husband died. 4. Troy Dayton Residence in North Fargo This is one of the more famous cases in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Troy Dayton was a DJ for Y94 who always insisted that his home was haunted. Dayton, FM Paranormal and Y94 DJ, Rat, teamed up to investigate his home. Before FM Paranormal investigated his home Dayton recorded noises that sounded like the music from an old ferris wheel. Once

Dosh and his team began investigating, they discovered that Fargo’s old fairgrounds used to be where his house is located. They captured EVPs of the spirits saying their name and other things that will haunt your dreams. 5. Ceres Hall at NDSU Ceres Hall is one of the most haunted places in FargoMoorhead. However, it’s important to remember that it is not open to the public. According to Dosh, there was a matron of the girls’ dorm who didn’t want any boys sneaking in or girls sneaking out so she nailed the windows shut. There was then a fire that killed two girls. Another story is that there was a girl upstairs who hung herself because of bad grades. Finally, there’s another story that there was a janitor whose wife had cheated on him so he cheated on his wife with another woman. That guilt drove him crazy until he finally killed himself in the basement.

When Dosh and his team of investigators were exploring the basement, he experienced something that, to this day, freaks him out. “The most creeped out I’ve ever been is when I felt the hands on the back of me in Ceres Hall. It felt like somebody ran up behind me and pushed me. The strength was unreal.” The list of strange things that happened in Ceres Hall doesn’t end there though. Dosh’s 14-year-old son investigated Ceres Hall with them. While they were down in the basement his son began to feel like he was being choked. When they ran upstairs, they could still see the fingerprints around his neck. Whatever is in Ceres Hall, it’s certainly a reason not to wander there alone at night.

ENTERTAIN... 1. Extreme Scream Find a heart pumping, skin crawling, and hair raising corn trail, castle, cave, graveyard, wood trail, and barn maze all in one place. Haunted Farm This is not like when you would visit the farm as a young buck. There are not any sweet baby lambs or calves prancing around. The things that crawl around the Haunted Farm are most likely to

torment your dreams and leave you jumping with every slight noise. Muster up the courage to take the 45 minute tour which will lead you through 15 different terrifying places, including a stroll through eerie woods and an unearthly asylum. To those men who think this would make for a great date to show off how brave you are, you may want to rethink that idea. The Haunted Farm is much scarier than you might think. You can’t say we didn’t warn you. www.hauntedfarm.com 10 miles south of Moorhead on Hwy. 75 3. Acres of Terror Take a journey to Leonard, ND to immerse yourself in a terrifying tour guide through the Acres of Terror and the abandoned Leonard School House. Haunted Corn Maze What’s great about the Haunted Corn Maze is that everyone can enjoy it. Want to go for a nice stroll through a corn maze with your family? 5 Buffalo River Pumpkin Patch Here is a place with a little less “BOO” and a little more fun for everyone. Take time to venture through the pumpkin patch to pick out that perfect pumpkin. IDEAS...

1. Marge Gunderson from “Fargo” Coen brother’s sure depicted our home-sweet-home spot on in their hit dark comedy, “Fargo,” OK, maybe not so much. However, they did leave us with unforgettable characters like, Marge Gunderson. The quirky chief of police with a bun in the oven. So strap on a belly, throw on a bomber hat and a navy

blue parka, find an overly thick pair of mittens, pin on a star badge and most importantly… don’t forget the accent and voila! You’ve got Marge Gunderson, don’tcha know? 2. Bison player Dressing up as Fargo’s hometown heroes is always a safe way to go with this year’s costume. So, why not

add a bit of creativity to the generic idea to spice things up and make your Bison costume national title worthy? Perhaps, add a wardrobe malfunction to your costume or walk around with a petition page full of made up names. 3. Fargo Marathon Runner Go ahead, bust out those short

shorts, strap on that Fargo Marathon bag you got for walking the 5K and throw on a friend’s marathon shirt. Congratulations, everybody will think you ran the marathon. Now you just have to find someone to stretch you out… 4. A Sandbag Want to get really creative with this years costume? Then give some credit to those helpful little buggers that kept the rive water from taking over this beautiful city. All it takes is a burlap sack stuffed with something bulky. Let the real fun being and make your Halloween night into a full blown sack race… might as well since you are already sporting a burlap sack. 5. Coach Bohl Who wouldn’t want to be the head coach of a National winning Football team… even if it is only for one night. Here’s your Coach Bohl costume checklist; head to toe green and gold attire, a bald cap, a posse of players and a serious game face. Go team go!

INTERROGA WITH

Tania

TION

Blani

ch

Tania Blanich is a Fargo girl at heart. After growing up in Fargo, she moved to New York City for 28 years, where she worked, part of her time in New York, as the director of the Program for Media Artists and then spent a brief stint in Kentucky, working as the Chief Operating Officer at Lexarts, before returning to the area to become the Executive Director of the Rourke Museum. Spotlight caught up with this art lover inside the historic Rourke Museum to discuss the challenges of operating a museum, her plans for the Rourke in the future and what Fargo means to her. “Entity #3” by Fritz Scholde “Woodland Creature” “The Skeptic” by local artist Duane Mickelson

INTERROGATION Spotlight: What made you want to leave the big city life and return to Fargo? Blanich: This is a great job. You don’t often get the opportunity to run such a long-standing institution in a community. It felt like a great challenge to preserve and forward Jim O’rourke’s legacy.

Spotlight: Your mom was very involved in art. What sort of impact did she have on you? Blanich: It was a huge impact. She started the FM Community Theatre and helped run the Halbeisen School of Dance. There was always art by local artists on the wall. When we traveled we bought art. It really set the stage for my sister and I to become involved in the arts. We’ve always had that as part of our lives.

Spotlight: Of all your jobs, which has been your favorite? Blanich: I didn’t know it but this is my dream job. (Laughs) I’m not just saying it. I’ve had some great jobs. I mean, my God, I have a Miró in my office. (Laughs) There’s a couple of George Pfeiffer’s. I’m doing OK.

Spotlight: Talk about the art scene in Fargo-Moorhead.

Spotlight: What are the biggest challenges the Rourke faces?

Blanich: It’s pretty diverse and very broad. All of the art forms are represented. We have a really wonderful mix of long-standing institutions and brand new ones. That’s exciting to see. I believe the more, the merrier. I really don’t believe that any of us are in competition. We are in terms of, oh gosh; if you’re going to a play then you can’t come to my opening. (Laughs) The truth is, the more that there is to do the more we should be sending a message of how important arts are to the community. The success of any arts institution reflects well on every other arts institution.

Blanich: I think it’s both attracting and maintaining new audiences and, as with any non-profit entity, it’s about raising money and having people understand the value of this really amazing collection of art at their fingertips. The other big challenge is that we inherited 1,500 pieces of art from Jim (O’rourke) and we have 3,500 pieces. So, getting through our inventory is huge for us. It’s a little like Christmas everyday.

Spotlight: Do you think the arts scene is stronger than when you were growing up?

Spotlight: You’ve had some great jobs. What do you find working here in Fargo that you couldn’t find at those other places?

Blanich: I think it’s more diverse. Stronger is a funny term…. I think we have a lot more distractions than when I was growing up so I think that’s why the diversity is possible. People are interested in broader ranges of things. They have access to more different things.

Spotlight: Is there one moment that you remember that got you first interested in art? Blanich: I just grew up with it. It was just a way of life in our house.

Blanich: The easy answer is: I get to be the boss. (Laughs) I think museums face a lot of challenges in how to reach new audiences while paying attention to their loyal audiences. That’s an interesting challenge… It’s exciting for me.

InterVIEW Spotlight: What changes can we expect to happen under your belt?

For more information on the Rourke, go to www. therourke.org or check it out for yourself at 521 Main Avenue in Moorhead.

Blanich: For one thing, I’m going to take the fence down. I’ve started something called “The De-Fence Fund.” The fence is a physical barrier. I hear a lot of people say, “I didn’t think this place was open.” It’s about more than taking down the fence. It’s about, how can we take down the barriers that stop people from enjoying art and experiencing it. A museum isn’t a place to be intimidated by. We want to create an environment where people feel welcome. I think that is partially how we need to think about how we program what’s here and how we present the work so that there may be better material for informational purposes. We will be revamping the permanent collection once we know what’s in it… A goal of ours is to showcase the permanent collection on an ongoing basis. You know, there’s stuff you always want to keep out. People always want to see the Warhol but there’s more than that. We need to strike the balance between the things people love to see and the things we have.

How did you get started cooking? Through my mom, actually. When Lonestar opened up in town, she was the general manager and I went to work for her here and there when I was 13. I worked here when it was Uno’s, and the kitchen manager went to the Moorhead Country Club and he needed a sous chef. Then after that I did a little bit of the bar scene, I was kitchen manager at Bordertown for about a year and came back here when they offered me the position.

What’s your favorite thing to whip up here? It’s going to sound a bit odd, but country fried steak pizza. We have our homemade andouille sausage that we used to make sausage gravy, which we used as the sauce; we cut our own rib eyes too, so we used some of the scraps off that and fried them. We threw those on there, and then some corn, cheese and bacon. It was pretty good. We have quite a few things in our kitchen so we play around with them a lot, and that was probably the best thing we’ve come up with so far. What do you cook most outside of work? What I call ‘soul food’ — stuff that I remember my mom or grandma making. My mom’s recipe for fried chicken is my favorite. I consider my meatloaf one of the best I’ve ever had; I use peppers, I stuff it with pepper jack cheese and bacon, and it turns out pretty good.

What’s the secret to a great steak? It depends on where you get it, and having some knowledge on the different cuts and grades helps. Then it kind of depends on how you cook it. I like mine grilled but on real low heat. It takes a bit longer, but when I do it, I turn the grill up high — basically sear the outside — then drop the heat and cook it low. What’s the most rewarding part of this job? The people I work with. I’ve worked with these guys for four or five years and we’re a big family. We get done at the end of the day and we sit down and have a drink. That’s basically what keeps me coming back.

FM Do you have any guilty pleasures? BK Anything with gravy! (laughs)
