“Cherish Today, Challenge Tomorrow” Samantha Morris and Eliana Lozano, Unbound Editors Unbound: say it out loud, roll it softly off your tongue and hear how perfect it sounds. This is the yearbook of Florida Virtual School and its teachers, students, staff members, interns and volunteers.

So, what would you like to do today? What do you dream of doing tomorrow?

Here at FLVS, we like a good challenge. But we also like to stop and appreciate who we are and what we are doing for our community and our world – right here, right now. In all honesty, Florida Virtual School, which boasts of over 10,000 students, has some of the most committed learners out there. We work hard at our courses and participate in a myriad of clubs, and we work toward our goals using the many online resources that FLVS provides.

As of 2012, we had an Olympic torch holder (a young philanthropist) and an Olympic gold medalist (a girl who needed an online version of English 4 so she could have more time to train) as FLVS students. We had a GenerationOn advisory council member and a young woman determined to “flip” houses for a living. We had award winning dancers, Model UN members, Florida LEADS Leadership Managers and Staff Conference Panelists.

But most importantly, with the help of Florida Virtual School, we have the future at our fingertips. Today we have more than textbooks; we have an online learning community.

Tomorrow, expect FLVS to inspire, create, accomplish and aspire more than it has today.

“Cherish Today, Challenge Tomorrow” was chosen to be our 2012 Yearbook theme because we here at FLVS “cherish” every moment – our conferences, club field trips, our stellar grades and our publications – but we also work at our studies and strive for leadership positions so we can “challenge tomorrow.” We work as students, and we commit ourselves to our wonderful online and offline extracurriculars. We strive today, so we can continue growing and challenging new tomorrows.

Without further ado, the Unbound staff invites you to cherish each page, each article, each picture and every little detail and challenge yourselves to be even more exceptional in the future.

Mrs. Julie Young is a phenomenal leader in society: she is the president and CEO of Florida Virtual School and was recently named one of Orlando Business Journal’s top “Women Who Mean Business.” I had the honor of interviewing her about the past, present, and future of Florida Virtual School. The first question I

asked Mrs. Young was if she ever thought the school would be so successful.

She responded by saying she tries to put 100 percent in “whatever [she] can get [her] hands on,” and attributed most of Florida Virtual School’s success to the FLVS team and the supportive Florida legislature. “I knew if the idea stuck [with them], we would make it.”

“It feels great to be a part of FLVS; it’s an amazing environment,” said Mrs. Young about how it feels to be the President & CEO of FLVS. In fact, to celebrate the 15 years of success, the FLVS professional learning conference focused on this milestone. She explained the purpose of the conference was for FLVS staff to look back on their 15 year journey and figure out how to continue the momentum.

During the past 15 years we have seen Mrs. Young become an outstanding leader; but how does Florida Virtual School prepare students to be leaders themselves? “Florida Virtual School focuses on the individualized learning opportunities, and expands on them, instilling mastery. I think that the relationships that are created at different points in the learning process are telling, and help [the student] form true leadership qualities to utilize in other areas of his or her life.” Spoken like a true leader.

I asked if there was anything Mrs. Young would have done differently for FLVS. She said that honestly she could not pinpoint a specific thing. She elaborated by saying there were many things that the school tried but were not successful. However, those were the things that aided in the institution’s progression towards success. “If we’re going to fail, let’s fail fast and make the changes needed to make things work for our students.”

How long does Mrs. Young hope FLVS will be around? “Would it be selfish if I said forever?” I wrapped up the interview with arguably the most important question of all: does FLVS have anything in the works for the upcoming 15 years? “As long as we continue to keep every student at the center of each decision we make, the later years will be as good, if not better, than the past 15 years.”

Are there any pre-requisites for this course?

Before taking this course, students should take both Algebra 1 and 2.

Who should take this course?

The ideal student for this course is a student who has successfully passed Algebra 1 and 2, but math is not their strongest area. Students taking this course are looking to get that fourth year math credit without having to take Pre-Calculus. It is also for any student who would like understand the mathematics behind finances, such as credit cards, loans, and investments.

What content will be covered?

This advanced course incorporates real-world applications, collaboration, and calculations using technology.

Students will learn how to handle their personal finances by learning the formulas used to determine account balances, monthly payments, total costs, and more. Students will gain financial literacy when it comes to banking, savings, spending, debt, mortgages, investments, and retirements.

How do you think this course will help students in the future?

This course will help students learn the importance of being financially literate when they have to handle their finances on their own. Students will learn different strategies for balancing their budget, something that everyone needs to know today.

What have you learned while teaching this course?

I personally never taught this course, but as I support this course, one thing I learned was a strategy to help pay off credit cards. There is a lot of beneficial information in this course that, unfortunately, most people have to find out the hard way after making many financial mistakes. But knowing these things beforehand can help students be better prepared for the real world.

Who should take this course?

As this is a core course, everyone needing a middle school Social Studies credit should take this course.

What content will be covered?

The world! Can you believe it? We go to China and discover fireworks; Egypt to see the pyramids; Mesoamerica to learn of the floating gardens! I really mean the world….it’s so exciting!

How do you think this course will help students in the future?

History has a way of repeating itself. If we know the “why” behind the past, it helps us to make better decisions for the future. And besides….it is really cool!

What have you learned while teaching this course?

I’ve learned we have some seriously amazing ancient civilizations that helped form the world we live in today. It may seem simple, but the languages, farming, and road systems had a huge impact on our world. Ideas, thoughts, creation of a commonly accepted money system, permanent homes… we have all of these items because of the ancient civilizations we learn about in this course.

Are there any pre-requisites for this course?

MJ Science 3 follows MJ Science 1 & 2, but there are no set prerequisites. Students should have successfully completed these courses prior to taking MJ Science 3.

Who should take this course?

MJ Science 3 is designed for students that have completed MJ Science 1 & 2 and is equivalent to the 8th grade curriculum a student might take in a traditional school.

What content will be covered?

MJ Science 3 is a comprehensive science course that includes topics in physical science like atoms and molecules, earth science concepts such as rocks and minerals, and biological content with the exploration of cells. These are just some examples of the broad range of content in this course.

How do you think this course will help students in the future?

The purpose of this course is to give students a strong foundation in science before they begin taking high school science courses. The inquiry involved in the labs and the high expectations of the teachers that support students in this course translate into a great learning experience for students.

Are there any pre-requisites for this course?

There are no pre-requisites for the Psychology 1 course. It is usually the first course in Psychology that students take at the high school level and has the introductory information about the field of psychology.

Who should take this course?

The course is most appropriate for students in grades 10-12.

What content will be covered?

The content of the course contains information about the history of psychology, the moral, cognitive and social development of people, mental disorders and therapy methods and social psychology. The most influential psychologists and their theories are included as well.

How do you think this course will help students in the future?

This course is helpful to students because it helps them to understand the development of different aspects of personality and behavior in people. It gives them important information about the need to seek treatment for mental health disorders should these occur in their lives or the life of someone that they know.

What have you learned while teaching this course?

While teaching this course, I have learned that students are very interested in this type of information and have a lot of questions as well as great thoughts that they like to share about the content of the course. It is a course that I truly enjoy teaching!

FINE ARTS CLUB “We’ve got TALENT, More than it appears PERFORMING, SINGING, DANCING Now get up and let me hear you cheer!”

So say the members of the FLVS Fine Arts Club. Students collaborate online to pursue their passion for acting, singing, and music. With over 90 members, this is possibly one of the most popular student clubs. Sponsored by Ms. Becky Dedo, the club worked on several virtual and face-to-face productions for the 2012-13 school year.

Fine Arts Club members wrote and performed an original production for the 2012 FLVS Professional Learning Conference.

The production, “We are the world, Fly FLVS,” featured acting, singing, and dancing by club members in front of 1500 people. Students wrote and rehearsed online for several months before performing live.

Fine Arts Club members wrote their own version of Shakespeare’s “Two Gentlemen of Verona” and performed the play virtually at the 2013 FLVS Shakespeare Festival. According to several attendees, the student play was the highlight of the festival.

Future Business Leaders of America “What a fun and exciting year for FBLA,� said Ms. Tina Leslie, FBLA Co-sponsor. In addition to attending the Fall and State Leadership Conferences, 28 club members sought to raise awareness for Autism Speaks for their community service project.

As their chosen senior project, members developed and presented Senior Nights in February. This project won them 5th place in the Partnership with Business event at state.

The FLVS Cyber Scholar Chapter is the only online chapter of the National English Honor Society. To be a member, students must be in 10th grade or higher, have completed English 1 with a B or higher, and have an overall GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Members help support literacy by hosting book chats, serving as English tutors and participating in book drives. Many of these activities count as community service hours.

During the 2012-13 school year, 20 student members hosted the Poetry Slam for Celebrate Literacy Week in January and the African American Read-In in February.

They also recruited guest speakers and initiated the inter-club book drive, including a drive at this year’s Club Day. Says sponsor Mrs. Miranda, “I am honored to work with such a passionate and talented group of young adults. They are inspiring and have taught me so much this year!”

“It’s been a fun year of science challenges and a successful 7th Annual VSF,” noted Mrs. Cloran, Science Club sponsor. During the 2012-13 school year, 15 student members participated in various science challenges, and were given the opportunity to submit a project for the annual Virtual Science Fair. Any student who is actively enrolled in a course at FLVS, not just a science course, can participate in the Science Club.

S.N.A.P stands for Spanish Nuts at Play. Just like it says, S.N.A.P is for students who are nutty about Spanish. During the club’s monthly meetings, members play games, watch videos, learn about the Hispanic culture and more. Student can join the club if they are new at Spanish or are already experienced with the language. Members will not only meet others who are passionate about the Spanish culture, but make new friends.

The Alma Flor Ada Spanish National Honor Society is a group of FLVS high school students who are involved in Spanish courses. Once a month they meet to discuss community service opportunities, Spanish tutoring, and many other ways that they can help the Spanish society and the students on FLVS. If you’ve taken two or more Spanish credits in school, come join the Spanish National Honor Society. You will meet new people and will be able to help others in your community.

World Events: July 2012 On August 6, 2012, NASA’s unmanned rover Curiosity successfully touched down on Mars. The $2.6 billion rover landed on the Martian surface after a complicated landing process, dubbed the “seven minutes of terror,” that involved a sky crane and the world’s largest supersonic parachute. Almost immediately, Curiosity began transmitting images back to NASA as part of its two-year mission on the red planet. The rover even had its own Twitter account to communicate with space fans. President Barack Obama called the mission “an unprecedented feat of technology.”

The 2012 Summer Olympics were held in London, July 27 - August 12, 2012.

Athletes from around the world competed in over 30 different events. The United States won the medal count with 104 medals, 46 gold and 29 each of silver and bronze. The U.S. women’s gymnastics team won team gold at these games for the first time since 1996. These games also saw the end of swimmer Michael Phelps’ career. Phelps won 6 medals in London, making him the most decorated Olympian of all time with 22 medals.

The Space Shuttle Endeavour arrived at its final destination in October 2012. After being retired in 2011, Endeavour ultimately made its way to the California Science Center in Los Angeles. A temporary display opened to the public on October 30, with a permanent home currently under construction. Space Shuttle Atlantis, the final space shuttle to be retired, will remain on permanent display at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex.

Construction of a new facility to house Atlantis began in 2012 and the exhibit will open in June 2013.

October 14, 2012, Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner completed a supersonic skydive and broke several world records in the process. After ascending 24 miles above the Earth in a helium balloon, Baumgartner jumped to the Earth breaking the 50-year-old skydive altitude record. He also became the first skydiver to break the sound barrier with a top speed of 833 mph.

Through June 2013 Hurricane Sandy hit the Northeastern United States in late October 2012.

Nicknamed “Superstorm Sandy” because of its merge with a frontal weather system, the storm was the deadliest and most destructive storm of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. Sandy caused 72 deaths and over $60 billion in damages, making it the second costliest hurricane in U.S. history. New Jersey and New York were two of the hardest hit areas. In New Jersey, millions were left without power, several towns were devastated by floodwaters and a 50-footpiece of the Atlantic City Boardwalk washed out to sea. In New York, the Stock Exchange was closed for two days, large sections of lower Manhattan and several subway tunnels were flooded, as well as the construction site at Ground Zero. Thousands of homes were destroyed and billions of dollars in damage were seen in these two states alone.

President Barack Obama was sworn into office for a second term in January 2013. The official ceremony was held on January 20 to satisfy Constitutional requirements, while the public ceremony was held on January 21. Approximately 800,000 spectators attended the inauguration on Capitol Hill with performances

by James Taylor, Kelly Clarkson, and Beyonce. President Obama’s second inauguration carried the theme of “Faith in America’s Future” to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Statue of Freedom being placed atop the U.S. Capital dome.

On February 15, 2013, a meteor exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia, injuring over 1400 people and damaging over 4300 buildings. It is the most powerful meteor to strike Earth’s atmosphere in over a century.

On February 11, 2013, Pope Benedict XVI announced his resignation citing age and a lack of strength to continue his duties. Pope Benedict kept his name and became officially known as Pope Emeritus or Supreme Pontiff Emeritus when his resignation became official on February 28.

Pope Benedict was the first pope to resign since Gregory XII in 1415 and the first to voluntarily do so since Celestine V in 1294.

On March 13, 2013, Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires was elected as the 266th pope after 2 days of conclave. Taking the papal name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, this was the first time a pope had taken this name.

Three people were killed and over 200 injured when two bombs exploded near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on April 15. Two suspects were later identified as 19-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and 26-yearold Tamerlin Tsarnaev. Tamerlin Tsarnaev was killed in a shootout with police while his younger brother was later arrested and remains jailed on several charges.

What is something you've learned from a student and will always remember?

I have some that cannot afford a computer but continue to take my online class and do everything to get to a local library and are somehow always on pace or ahead despite all of the limitations. They know the power of education and are not worried about material items but realize that our great country has a lot to offer if they only take advantage of it. I am grateful that I have a computer on a whim and for all that I have!

What is something you've learned from a student and will always remember?

I have learned the power of perseverance. I had a student whose father was in jail for murder, and his mother was raising him. In retaliation for murder, this student's mother and sister were shot. This student kept pushing forward, and he eventually graduated from high school, got a full ride to college because of his football skills, and he is doing very well! I was there with him through most of his high school years, and I will never forget him. He is the very reason I am a teacher, so that I can help students achieve!

If you could spend the afternoon doing anything, what would it be?

In my spare time I read and write young adult novels, knit prayer shawls, and walk my dog, Sophie. I get to watch my senior daughter cheer, go to Jaguar games with my hubby, and sometimes visit my son, who’s now a Gator! And I LOVE teaching at FLVS!

What is something you've learned from a student and will always remember?

I’ve learned from many of my students not to assume anything about them, whether it’s in relation to their academics, achievements, abilities, behavior, home life, etc.

I had a FLVS student that lost his vision when he was 16. He was the most positive person I have ever met. He taught me to stay positive no matter what life throws at you.

Dr. Charlyne Walker What is your role at FLVS? I am an AP Computer Science and Computer Programming 1 instructor.

What has been your favorite FLVS experience?

I love interacting with students. Last year, I had the opportunity to help Mrs. Ross bring a FLVS programming team to the UCF programming competition. Our students did very well, but I really enjoyed the opportunity to spend face-to-face time with FLVSers.

What is something you've learned from a student and will always remember?

Something that seems small and simple, such as an encouraging word from a teacher, can make a life changing difference in the life of the recipient.

Mrs. Shari Wasser What is your role at FLVS? I am an English teacher at FLVS. I currently teach AP English Language and Composition and English III. What is something you’ve learned from a student you’ll always remember?

FLVS has introduced me to different types of students than what I was accustomed to in my traditional class. I’ve learned perseverance, courage and strength from my students battling illnesses. From some of my homeschooled students, I’ve also learned that you are never too young to carve your own path. I’m always impressed with a smart, motivated student who steps off the grid to travel, study abroad, or, as one of my students did after high school, go to boat making school!

Mr. Francisco Garcia What is your role at FLVS? My role in FLVS is to make sure my students get the best academic/musical experience possible while learning how to play their guitars.

What has been your favorite FLVS experience?

I've had several favorite FLVS experiences so far. Just to mention one, I had one student who started the course not knowing anything about the guitar and throughout the course became very proficient. She ended up using her newly discovered musical talent to give back to her community and play the National Anthem at a local elderly home.

What is your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievements with FLVS have been reaching and connecting with students and getting them excited about pursuing music as a possible career option.

Ms. Kristine Morris What is your role at FLVS? My role at FLVS is to provide instruction for students in English II. What is your greatest achievement?

I feel my greatest achievement actually comes from multiple students. It is nice to be able to help students be engaged in my live lessons so they can learn with a unique environment.

If you could spend the afternoon doing anything, what would it be?

This is probably a traditional English teacher response for this type of question, but if I could spend an afternoon doing anything, it would be reading. I love to read and I think both Barnes and Noble and Amazon would suffer without my contributions.

Mrs. Sarah Greer What is your role at FLVS? Lead teacher for M/J Science 3.

Working with amazing students and colleagues.

Watching my students grow and become life long learners.

You can do or become anything- if you have the determination!

Mrs. Cornelius-Mehlhorn What is your role at FLVS? I teach MJLA3, which is otherwise known as 8th Grade Language Arts.

What is something you’ve learned from a student you’ll always remember?

I am consistently reminded by all of my students that we are all individuals with specific strengths that can be built upon to help ourselves and others to reach our goals. Some students are able to create show stopping presentations with Power Point programs or Internet sites, while others have writing abilities that exceed their years in class. This is a lesson to remember as I work with rookie and veteran students in our classroom.

What is your greatest achievement?

A few years ago, I had a student track me down to say thanks for not giving up on them. This student was on a path to drop out of school. Ironically, years later she was inviting me to her college graduation. Knowing that I was fortunate enough to play a part in her success was an incredible achievement.

If they understand that your expectations are high, they will reach for it.

I have enjoyed being a part of the FLVSFT team so much. The families are fantastic, our leadership is amazing, and my colleagues are the best in the state.

What is something you’ve learned from a student you’ll always remember?

I’ll always remember how to remember the cosine, sine, and tangent sum and difference formulas using the song “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.”

What is something you’ve learned from a student you’ll always remember?

I think what I have learned most is that I can learn just as much from my students as they can learn from me. FLVSFT has some amazing kids from all walks of life. They bring both life experiences and wonderful talents to the table.

My favorite experience as an FLVS instructor has been attending the Student Club Day 2013 event and meeting many students and parents in person, especially meeting one of my very own students . That was a very exciting day!

What is something you’ve learned from a student you’ll always remember?

I am constantly learning from students, especially in live sessions. Every student is unique and perceives or interprets an event differently.

What is your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement has been helping students and parents feel like I was there for them not only to teach them Spanish but also to listen to them and work with them to help them succeed.

Mrs. Michelle Licata What is your role at FLVS? I currently am finishing my year as the Teacher of the Year and I serve as Lead Teacher for Social Studies in the Middle School.

What is something you’ve learned from a student you’ll always remember?

I learn from students every hour of the day! One thing that I learned from a student was how to use a Web 2.0 tool called Kerpoof. I will never forget this as she and I collaborated on a video for her little brother who was ill at the time.

If you could spend the afternoon doing anything, what would it be?

I would spend the day on the set of Dancing with the Stars! One day I will be famous, even if just for 15 minutes, so I can be on that show!!

Mr. Stephen McPherson What is your role at FLVS? At FLVS, I wear many hats: I am a middle school World History Teacher, Clinical Educator (host and train student teachers), Legislative Liaison for Volusia County, and I work with the Fine Arts Club Summer Drama Program.

What has been your favorite FLVS experience?

My favorite FLVS experience has been working with my student teachers. I love helping emerging professionals see how amazing it is to be able to work with our wonderful kids at FLVS. We have the best, and I love to show them off!

What is something you’ve learned from a student you’ll always remember?

Never give up on kids - even when it seems hopeless. Keep believing in their ability to do great things and they will amaze you when you least expect it!

PAM BIRTOLO

CHIEF OFFICER OF EDU EDUCATION CATION TRANSFORMATION

As Chief Officer of Education Transformation, Mrs. Birtolo is responsible for FLVS instruction. Her team deals with curriculum and professional learning development as well as student success. Her favorite experience at FLVS is any time she interacts with students.

Through her experiences, she has learned that if students are shown that instructors care about their success, then learning is easy. If she could give students any message, she would tell students to stop thinking of school as a noun and to start thinking of it as a verb. Learning should be something we do all the time and apply to our life.

To Mrs. Birtolo, the phrase “Cherish Today, Challenge Tomorrow” means that we should “be present in the present while planning, dreaming, and envisioning the future.”

STAFF PERSON OF THE YEAR Ms. Kristen Foisy What is your role at FLVS? Here at FLVS, I am the Support Representative for our instate Franchises.

What do you find most amazing about FLVS? There are many amazing things about FLVS, but something that always stands out to me is the wonderful opportunities FLVS has for students. It is great to hear the remarkable stories of our students. It is also great to be a part of an organization where our teachers and support staff are encouraging students to be successful and know they are making a difference in students’ lives.

What is your favorite part of your job?

One of my favorite parts of my job is being able to help others. It brings me joy to listen to others, resolve issues and know that I am helping to make their day a little easier/ better. My other favorite part of my job is working with my wonderful team and other professionals in and outside the organization.

What does this award mean to you?

Receiving this award is such an honor. I am humbled to have been recognized by my supervisors and peers. I am very proud to represent Florida Virtual School.

What has been your role at FLVS? I have served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees since the creation of the school and served as chair of the Advisory Board that created the school. I led the initiative in Alachua County in 1996 that merged with the group Julie [Young] led in Orange County to create what became Florida Virtual School.

I was there from the very beginning of the dream.

What do you find most amazing about FLVS? I find the people are most amazing. We have an incredible array of talented, visionary and selfless folks on the executive team. They have put together the most effective and gifted team of teachers, tech staff and support staff that I could ever imagine. Because of the people FLVS has become so successful. I am also amazed at the level of commitment everyone shares to meet the mission of the school, doing what is best for the students.

At FLVS it is all about what is best for the students and it has been amazing to see that is still the core of what we do after 16 years. So many other schools and districts have their visions and mission diluted in time. We have not! Lastly I am amazed at the number of students we serve and the number of courses taken. It blows my mind that we will serve over 250,000 students in over 500,000 courses this year. Now that is amazing!

What is your favorite part of your job ?

The favorite part of what I do is interact with the staff, especially Julie Young. She is an amazing woman and I am so proud of what she has done in leading this school over the years. Getting to work closely with her and getting to know her has been the highlight for me. A close second to that is receiving the very touching letters of testimonials from students and parents about ways the FLVS community has impacted and changed their lives. To make such a difference in peoples lives is very humbling and rewarding.

What is in store for you in your future ?

I have moved to Colorado and hope to put all of the things I have learned in education over the years to work to help serve the education community here. I am still looking for a place to plug and look forward to my journey here.

Mrs. Stevie Johns What is your role at FLVS? My current role is Executive Office Manager/Clerk to Board of Trustees.

How long have you been with FLVS? I am going into my 7th year with FLVS. What has been your favorite FLVS experience?

My favorite FLVS experience stems from our growth and impact we are making on students. In my seven years here, we have grown tremendously and have increased our impact in students’ lives. It is such a neat part of history we are making!

What is your greatest achievement?

Personally, my greatest achievement has been being a mom to my sweet one-year-old, Ava. She has changed my world, making every minute precious.

What is something you've learned from a student and will always remember?

While attending an ambassador event, I’ll never forget my experience with a current student whom was running for student body president at her physical school. She had mentioned that FLVS helps her get to where she wants to go in life, so she was asking for an endorsement from us. It was a very neat opportunity, and shows that we are paving the way and creating opportunities for students.

If you could spend the afternoon doing anything, what would it be?

Spending time with my husband and my daughter. Nothing fancy, just good quality time!

Dr. Jodi Marshall What is your role at FLVS? I am currently the VP of Instruction. I work with our Directors of Student Learning, who supervise our Instructional Leaders. I also work our Director of Student Engagement/Student Services, and our Director of Instructional Models (which encompasses our full time program and global school).

How long have you been with FLVS? 10 years What has been your favorite FLVS experience?

A long time ago it was getting my first class of students. More recently, it was seeing everyone at our professional learning conference. My favorite part of any day or week or month here at FLVS is when I get to talk to teachers and students!

What is your greatest achievement?

Having my two children and authoring a book – both labors of love .

What is something you've learned from a student and will always remember?

To never give up; to keep trying no matter the circumstances; and to never take myself too seriously.

If you could spend the afternoon doing anything, what would it be?

At the beach with my family.

Mr. Andy Ross What is your role at FLVS? I am the Vice President of FLVS Global Division. I manage three areas. First our relationship with Pearson who is our largest reseller of our content and services. Second, I manage our international business which is very exciting and growing rapidly. Lastly, there are key accounts that I manage in certain states including southern California, Nevada, Utah, Hawaii, and Georgia.

What has been your favorite FLVS experience?

Now this is a hard one because I have had so many. I think customer visits and promoting FLVS outside the State of Florida is my favorite activity. This role has given me many unique experiences from customers all over the county and the world. This experience allows me to see all different ways students learn and I can share them with other clients.

What is something you've learned from a student and will always remember?

The good news is that I am always learning from students. But one that stands out is when I listened to one of our FLVS students who spoke to our team about what he thinks our role should be at FLVS (from a teacher perspective). He told us that he wants his FLVS teachers to be like his grandparents. Parents have a role in their children’s lives to guide and keep them on track, and discipline is part of the role. Grandparents on the other hand have unconditional love for their grandchildren and accept anything they do, no matter what it is. I found this to be a very insightful statement and, as a grandpa, I find it very true. I use that in many presentations when describing the role of our teachers and what students are looking for from FLVS - accept who you are and offer unconditional support in helping you.

If you could spend the afternoon doing anything, what would it be?

Walking on Victoria Beach, which is located on Rose Island in the Bahamas, with my wife. I truly feel at peace on this beach and what better person to share it with than my wife who is also my best friend.

Mrs. Jenna Bonazinca What is your role at FLVS? I work with our Foundation raising money to help various funding initiatives that benefit students including access to technology, our scholarship program, student activities and community learning centers.

What has been your favorite FLVS experience?

Our annual Professional Learning Conference is a very inspirational time. For those of us who don’t work directly with students, it’s really exciting to hear such wonderful stories and get to interact with our instructional side. The first time our students put on their Fantasia performance was probably my favorite moment yet.

What is something you've learned from a student and will always remember?

Determination. Students at FLVS are some of the most determined I have ever met, on many levels.

If you could spend the afternoon doing anything, what would it be?

Relaxing with my family on a boat somewhere amazing.

If you could give students any piece of advice what would you say?

Don’t give up on your goals. It’s alright to adjust them, but make sure you complete them. Sometimes the end may seem so far away but time goes so fast and at the end of whatever your endeavor may be, you’ll feel so accomplished.

Mr. Joe Greaser What is your role at FLVS? I worked on the Design Team as an Instructional Design Specialist and now I work as a Project Coordinator in the Enterprise Project Management Office.

How long have you been with FLVS? I started in September 2008, so about four years and five months.

What has been your favorite FLVS experience?

My favorite experience was learning to work in a true team. I previously worked in groups that used the word “team”, but when I started at FLVS, that was the first time I truly experienced work in a “team.” I did not understand this until I helped design Computer Programming 1 with Bill Jordan and Russell Driesen, my coworkers. The team environment has continued on throughout all my projects at FLVS. Working with everyone here has been a humbling experience; I have never been around people so driven and focused on a common goal.

What is your greatest achievement?

I love the quote from Star Trek: The Next Generation, which can be applied to all aspects of life: “We must strive to be more than we are…the effort yields its own rewards.” My greatest achievement is striving to understand this on a daily basis.

What is something you've learned from a student and will always remember?

I learned that education best practices’ do not necessarily line up with student preferences. We might know that some design approach should lead to better understanding, but if students do not like it, it’s useless, and we need to come up with new ideas.

My family, of course, and being fortunate to have always worked in a job that I am passionate about.

I have seen students emerge from terrible childhood experiences, and use those experiences to propel themselves to greatness. If you believe you can do it, you can do it!

Mr. Dan Geraghty What is your role at FLVS? I’m a Learning Specialist, who is tasked with ensuring FLVS employees are equipped with the skills to effectively serve students, parents and their colleagues. This includes training newly hired teachers and support staff, providing ongoing professional development that prepares teachers to meet the needs of students, and making sure that teachers are the best in the state, and hopefully the nation. We design training sessions, deliver those sessions and then evaluate them. It is a fun and exciting job where no two days are the same.

How long have you been with FLVS? I’ve been with FLVS since June 22, 2009 and have loved every day since.

What has been your favorite FLVS experience?

My favorite experience is preparing new FLVS employees to work with the fantastic students we have.

What is something you've learned from a student and will always remember?

“Every day, you have a choice about how you will act and what kind of person you will be.” This taught me that we choose how we approach situations, the way we react to things, and what we will accomplish. The trick is making the right choice every day.

If you could spend the afternoon doing anything, what would it be?

I would love to be snowboarding right now! Of course, that is a bit tough living in Florida.

Student Profiles Jessica Gonzalez is an eighth grade homeschooled student at Florida Virtual School.

A committed dancer, she recently participated in an Orlando-based dance competition and performed well enough to take home a title.

Tell us about the dance competition you entered.

I entered a dance competition in March in Orlando. It was called "I Love Dance." I received 1st place for the age 12-14 tap category against two other people. I also received the second overall highest score for the entire 12-14 age division, which consisted of about 50 dancers.

What type of dance did you perform to which song?

I performed a tap dance to the song "Bandstand" by Barry Manilow.

What’s your favorite part about dancing?

My favorite part about dancing is being able to perform on stage.

What is your favorite FLVS class?

Oh boy, I have a lot. My favorite FLVS classes are M/J Science 3 Advanced, Language Arts 3 Advanced, Algebra 1 Honors, Forensic Science, and Creative Photography.

What other FLVS clubs are you involved in?

The FLVS clubs that I am in are Yearbook and Newspaper Club, both of which are with Mrs. Newton! ď Š What other activities are you involved in?

Other activities that I am involved in are dance, dance, and dance! I also really enjoy singing, assisting at dance class, babysitting, and spending time with family and friends. I love writing for the FLVS newspaper and taking pictures for yearbook.

Student Profiles Kelsey Gray is a homeschooled senior and has been with Florida Virtual School since 2009.

If you could use one word to describe yourself, what would it be?

One word...wow that’s actually hard to come up with! I think the one word that fits is “committed.”

How has FLVS allowed you to achieve your goals?

FLVS has allowed me to work the way I need to work. It has also given me amazing teachers to encourage me along the way!

Which FLVS course has been your favorite? Who was your favorite teacher?

My favorite course was World History and my favorite teacher was Mr. Fitzgerald. He was such an inspiration!

What are your goals after high school?

After high school, I hope to head off to college and earn a creative writing degree with a minor in music. They are my two passions!

If you could give your peers one piece of advice, what would it be?

Some advice I could give my peers would be the following: read your books early, stay on pace and don’t forget about those clubs!

What activities are you involved in?

With FLVS, I’m in the Student Ambassadors Club, Fine Arts Club, Newspaper Club, National English Honor Society, and Creative Writing Club. Outside of FLVS, I’m involved in my church youth group and choir as well as my homeschool choir and band.

Describe an achievement you are personally proud of.

Personally, I’m proud to have been selected as a Student of the Year during the 2011-2012 school year. It was the biggest surprise and biggest blessing I could have ever possibly received!

Student Profiles Zach Marks is a sixth grade homeschooled student with Florida Virtual School. After not being allowed to join Facebook, he launched a social networking site called GromSocial.com for 6 to 14-year-olds. He has since been interviewed by USA Today, MSN, and more and was also nominated for Inventor of the Year by the Florida Inventors Society.

If you could use one word to describe yourself, what would it be?

Active How had FLVS allowed you to achieve your goals?

FLVS has let me achieve my goals because all the teachers are extremely flexible, which allows me to work on Grom Social as much as I want. Also, FLVS has helped with my surfing a lot.

Which FLVS course has been your favorite?

It’s hard to say. I like all my FLVS classes, though, my favorite teacher is Mrs. Spencer.

What are your goals after high school?

I want to travel the world and continue with Grom Social.

If you could give your peers one piece of advice, what would it be?

Don’t give up.

Student Profiles Christy Box is a senior who has taken homeschooled courses with Florida Virtual School since her freshman year. She graduates this spring and will attend the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Christy hopes to work in the film industry after college.

If you could use one word to describe yourself, what would it be?

I would use the word “ubiquitous.�

How has FLVS allowed you to achieve your goals?

FLVS has allowed me to have a flexible schedule and participate in a lot of clubs and volunteer activities. Through the FLVS clubs, I was also able to conquer my shyness, take on leadership positions, and participate in performing arts.

Which FLVS course has been your favorite?

I've really loved all of my English courses. I also learned a lot in World History.

Who was your favorite teacher?

I've had a lot of amazing teachers. Mrs. Hudson for English, Mrs. Olivieri for Critical Thinking and Study Skills, Mrs. Holiday for Latin, and Mrs. Gold for HOPE are just a few of the teachers that really stand out.

If you could give your peers one piece of advice, what would it be?

Take advantage of the amazing FLVS clubs. There's no better way to gain new experiences and make the most fantastic friends you've ever known.

What activities are you involved in?

I was the Editor-in-Chief of FLVS's News in a Click newspaper for two years. In addition, I was a Student Ambassador, Peer Tutor, president of the International Club, vice president of FBLA, and member of several other clubs. Outside of FLVS, I have volunteered on local film and television production jobs.

Describe an achievement you are personally proud of.

This year, I directed a local television show. I got a directing credit for it on the show when it aired. I also got to say, "Quiet on the set." I'm still not sure which one I'm more proud of.

Student Profiles Jenny Ruben has worked as an ambassador representing FLVS in many capacities both in person, in Tallahassee, and behind the scenes within the past few years. She has led NEHS projects together with co-president, Maggie Poling, with excellence, including the African American Read In and the Poetry Slam for Celebrate Literacy Week. Despite her own physical challenges that she has overcome, Jenny is always ready to help others, even organizing a fundraiser for another student. Jenny has been an outstanding spokesperson for many causes and has shared her story and passion for FLVS with legislators not only in Florida, but in Washington, DC. She has taken 29 courses at FLVS, 13 of which were Honors and 6 AP. Jenny will graduate this year but her legacy will inspire us all for years to come.

If you could use one word to describe yourself, what would it be?

Empathetic, strong-willed

I loved English 1, with Mr. Friend.

What are your goals after high school?

I am attending the Lead Scholar program at the University of Central Florida, and I plan on going to medical school.

If you could give your peers one piece of advice, what would it be?

Work hard, believe in yourself, and your dreams and aspirations will come true.

What activities are you involved in?

NEHS, NHS, and volunteering.

Describe an achievement you are personally proud of.

I am proud of meeting with Congressman Mica on Capitol Hill, and gaining his acknowledgement. Additionally, I am also proud of being one of the FLVS Students of the Year.

Student Profiles Samantha Morris is tenth grade homeschooled student with Florida Virtual School. She has taken 30 courses since 2009, earning A’s in all of them.

What inspired you to start a non-profit organization? Can you tell us more about it?

I started my non-profit Teens for Literacy for several reasons. First of all, I adore writing, and I wanted to put my writing skills to good use by conveying illiteracy facts. Second, I love books, and my heart aches for humans who are unable to form bonds with characters, feel zealous over a paragraph, or even just appreciate the beauty of a particular writing style. Many children and adults are illiterate in our world, so I feel the need to contribute to the growth of global literacy.

What are your future goals with this organization? What do you hope to accomplish?

I would love to have blog contributors from different countries report on literacy growth in their communities. I would also enjoy organizing worldwide “book drives,” where individuals each donate a book or two to their local libraries. Finally, I would like Teens for Literacy to cause a direct change in literacy today by having students join the REACT chapter of the non-profit, or “Reading to Encourage Action and Communicate Thoughts.” Each week I have a writing prompt based on a short excerpt of a famous document, and students “react” to this document by writing what it makes them feel, or by writing a different version of the document (i.e. what would the Declaration of Independence sound like if it was written as a poem?). As for the overall mission, I want Teens for Literacy to spread literacy awareness to the global community and improve literacy through the internet.

How has FLVS helped you with your goals?

FLVS has offered me an intensive curriculum and the blessing of being able to accelerate in fields that interest me. FLVS’s clubs such as News in a Click, National English Honor Society, Unbound, and Science National Honor Society have also taught me the importance of time management and how to be a better writer, editor, and communicator.

Student Profiles Summer Moser has successfully completed over 30 courses with FLVS. She was active in several FLVS clubs including Fine Arts Club, Student Ambassadors, NEHS, FBLA, and peer tutoring. Summer was also chosen as a 2013 FLVS Student of the Year.

If you could use one word to describe yourself, what would it be?

Probably giving. I love to give back to the community and my friends and people that I don’t even know. It’s such a great feeling when you help somebody out and they truly appreciate what you have done. Even in the form of providing entertainment, it’s a very satisfying feeling and I enjoy it so much!

How has FLVS allowed you to achieve your goals?

FLVS has been instrumental in allowing me to adjust my schedule to make it possible to get a college golf scholarship to a top academic school.

Which FLVS course has been your favorite? Favorite teacher?

Wow, okay, that’s a hard one. My favorite FLVS course would probably have been AP US Government. I discovered a new aspect of our government that I didn’t even know existed and it has helped me to determine what major I am going to study. My favorite FLVS teacher – well that’s just too hard to answer. Every single one of them has been so awesome and invested in helping me succeed during high school.

If you could give your peers one piece of advice, what would it be?

There is nothing that you can’t do if you set your mind to it. And if you think you can’t, ask for help! There’s always someone that will be willing to help you. Don’t be afraid to ask for help either. There are so many people that love to give back, and we’re doing it for you!

Describe an achievement you are personally proud of.

Putting together the Fine Arts rendition of The Two Gentlemen of Verona for the Shakespeare Festival. It was so much fun to work with my peers and our wonderful sponsor, Ms. Dedo, on the whole thing, and I think it’s pretty impressive that we put on a full skit just online. I couldn’t have done it without all of my fellow club mates’ help!

Student Profiles Yael Lilienthal is a senior who has successfully completed 14 courses with FLVS, 8 of which were AP courses, while also attending a private school full-time. She served as an editor for Virge Literary Magazine, News Editor for News in a Click student newspaper, and Layout Editor for Unbound student yearbook.

If you could use one word to describe yourself, what would it be?

Nerdy ď Š.

How has FLVS allowed you to achieve your goals?

I went to a school that didn't challenge me academically as much as I would have liked. FLVS allowed me to take courses that challenged me and supplemented the education and opportunities I was receiving in school.

Which FLVS course has been your favorite? Favorite teacher?

My favorite course was AP Language and Composition. I don't know about a favorite teacher, because there have been many teachers who have especially dedicated themselves to my success. I do, however, want to make a special mention of Mrs. Hudnall, my Geometry teacher in 9th grade. She was my first experience with FLVS and since it was so positive, I was motivated to take more courses and become more involved.

If you could give your peers one piece of advice, what would it be?

Never see anything as an obstacle. Everything is simply a challenge that is able to be overcome.

What are your goals after high school?

I am taking a gap year to study in Israel and then I will be going to Princeton University. I want to study linguistics and languages.

Describe an achievement you are personally proud of.

I think my entire high school experience is an achievement I am proud of. I was able to juggle brick-and-mortar school with parttime FLVS courses, as well as extra-curricular leadership positions in my own community and the virtual community. I molded my own experience to enhance these four years!

Student Profiles Carylanne Joubert is a homeschooled student who has completed over 20 courses with FLVS throughout her high school career. An active member of the Latin Club, she performed well on the National Latin Exam.

Carylanne graduates this year and will pursue her A.A. in the fall.

If you could use one word to describe yourself, what would it be?

I would use passionate.

How has FLVS allowed you to achieve your goals?

FLVS has been crucial in allowing me to achieve my goals as it allowed me to study various topics of interest (from science to Latin), allowed me to finish high school a year ahead of my peers (I'm 16 and a high school graduate), and the pacing of the courses allowed me time off to begin writing. I am now a published author of three books, since my junior year, which has allowed me not only to explore my passion for writing, but also to feel like I could start making my mark on the world.

If you could give your peers one piece of advice, what would it be?

The biggest piece of advice for my fellow peers is to truly follow what interests them because some jobs may pay higher than others, but happiness in a job is more important than money. So everyone should follow their dreams and keep trying to achieve them because nothing ever hurts to try and many can be surprised just how far they can go when they put their mind to doing what their heart wants.

Describe an achievement you are personally proud of.

Besides my performance in the National Latin Exams and the publication and success of my books, I think my biggest personal achievement was when I was invited to join the National Society for High School Scholars.

This is a prestigious group that a select group of seniors are chosen for each year, started by Claes Nobel who created the Nobel Prize; and I was invited to join based upon my excellent grades at Florida Virtual School. I am really proud of this because it was something I didn't expect to happen; whereas, I knew with the exams I might do as well as I did. This and the success of my books are my biggest achievements and I love them because they show the rewards one can get from hard work, and they are personal tokens of success for my work.

Student Profiles Matthew Youngster is a homeschooled sophomore who has been with FLVS since 2010. He is active in several student clubs and served over 100 hours of community service this year. Selected as one of the 2013 FLVS Students of the Year, Matthew hopes to one day attend FSU to study law.

If you could use one word to describe yourself, what would it be?

A huge skill I've been able to grow in while working with FLVS is leadership. So much so that I would confidently describe myself as a leader.

How has FLVS allowed you to achieve your goals?

Without a doubt. FLVS has helped me achieve many of my HS goals including remaining a homeschooled student while getting the kind of instruction I needed, being a part of several clubs, and earning a ton of community service hours.

If you could give your peers one piece of advice, what would it be?

Honestly, in my experience both personally and from what I have heard from others I would have to say to never give up, especially on your goals.

What activities are you involved in?

In FLVS, I've been a Student Ambassador since June of last year and was honored to best elected as the Vice President of that club in December. As a Student Ambassador I have been involved in many different things including being a Student Ambassador Assistant (SAA) which gives me the opportunity to help out in moderating sessions, a member of the "Hero" breakout session at the 2012 Staff Conference, the founder and chair of the SA Club Day Committee, & one of the representatives of Student Ambassadors for the Inter-Club Council (ICC). I was also one of the charter members of the FLVS Chess Club - Rook's Nook. I have been able to see this club grow and become the awesome club it is now. I was honored to be elected in this club to the position of Activities Coordinator in our first year and then to Vice President more recently. I also work as a Peer Tutor in Geometry, Math 2, and am training for Algebra I. Outside of FLVS I work as a professional chess coach for my local homeschool group and am immensely proud of all that my kids have accomplished over the past 2 years that I have lead that club. I am also an Altar Server captain at my church, Our Lady of the Rosary.

I've been honored to have achieve many things in my life but the one thing I am most proud of was to be named a FLVS Student of the Year at this year's Club Day.

Student Profiles Elizabeth Dentato is a homeschooled sophomore who has been with FLVS since 2010. She is an active member of the Fine Arts Club, participating in the “We Are the World, Fly FLVS” and “Two Gentlemen of Verona” performances this year.

Elizabeth’s leadership and dedication earned her a Student of the Year award for 2013.

If you could use one word to describe yourself, what would it be?

If I was to describe myself in one word, I believe it would be creative. I try to be creative when I have to solve a problem or when I'm working on a project in which I really want to show my personality.

How has FLVS allowed you to achieve your goals?

FLVS has allowed me to achieve my goals in so many ways. I am able to be flexible with my schedule. I can also focus on my schoolwork without the distractions of a brick and mortar classroom. The quality of education is exceptionally better, too! I can talk to my teacher one-on-one, without having to stay behind and miss my next class period.

Which FLVS course has been your favorite? Favorite teacher?

I think that my favorite FLVS course has been Creative Photography. I will be taking the second semester of the class next year, and I'm greatly looking forward to it! However, it is harder to choose my favorite teacher. All of the teachers that I have met have been such an inspiration, and have been so dedicated to my learning and success in both school and in life.

If you could give your peers one piece of advice, what would it be?

If I could give my peers on piece of advice it would be stay organized. I've learned that being organized can help you in so many ways - not just applying to schoolwork or the workplace.

Describe an achievement you are personally proud of.

One achievement that I'm personally proud of is receiving the Presidential Award for Academic Achievement, two years in a row (in 2007 and 2008). I find that it's really cool that I have two academic awards, hand-signed by two different presidents!

Virtual Coffee: Unbound Edition Samantha Morris, Grade 10 Today I will be interviewing students for a series entitled “Virtual Coffee: Unbound Edition,” a set of miniature articles that highlight FLVS students who participate in the fine arts. To conduct my interviews, I roll up to a quaint Starbucks, order a double-whip frappe Venti - a staple in the world of coffee - and take a seat near the window.

I take a gigantic whiff of my steaming cup of ground goodness. Oh, it smells wonderful. After I briefly indulge in the drink, I look down at my laptop and pull up both my Skype and email account. It’s true, today I will interview 6 students, one-by-one, albeit I will conduct the interviews completely and totally online. Here are some snippets of the "Virtual Coffee" interviews that took place at a classy little Orlando Starbucks, via my PC. My first interviewee is Maggie Poling, a student at FLVS who adores acting.

Virtual Coffee: What type of fine art do you participate in and how long have you been practicing it?

I participate in shows at my local community theatre. I have been acting since my family and I moved to Florida from Detroit, Michigan about five years ago.

VC: What has been the most rewarding/favorite part of practicing your fine art?

My favorite thing about acting is that it brings joy to others. When I hear the audience laugh at the way I said a line, I feel a sense of accomplishment. I also love when my character resonates with the audience and they respond well to her because then I know that I did a good job bringing my character to life.

VC: What advice do you have for someone who wants to participate in your fine art?

Acting takes buoyancy; you have to get back up when someone pushes you down. If you receive constructive criticism from your director, don't feel badly - it's called constructive criticism for a reason!

Your director is only pushing you to be the best you can be, which pays off in the end.

VC: How has acting helped you grow as a person?

Acting has helped me in so many ways. It has given me a creative outlet so I can express myself. I've also gained a lot of confidence, which makes it easy for me to speak in front of others. Lastly, acting has taught me to be strong and resilient. Now, I know how to roll with the punches. I also know how to stand up for myself (and others) when necessary.

Virtual Coffee: Unbound Edition Renaissance Woman Spotlight: Amanda Fischer Amanda loves to crochet, sew, and play the piano. She has been crocheting since she was 6 and playing the piano since she was 8. She even taught herself how to play the piano! Her favorite part about crocheting and sewing is that she can “turn mere pieces of fabric and balls of yarn into beautiful and useful things.” She loves to play the piano because she enjoys making music for herself and others. Her advice to students who wish to try sewing, crocheting, or playing the piano is to “take it a little bit at a time. Don’t try to learn everything at once.” She finishes off her interview by suggesting a unique method of learning the arts. “Don’t confine yourself to being taught by someone else. Though it’s most likely the best way, it’s not the only way.”

Singer Spotlight: Hannah Patrick Hannah adores singing. She says she has been singing for as long as she can remember and that the most rewarding part about the craft so far has been the experience. “It's so amazing to meet people just like me and to be involved with professionals.” Her best advice for anyone pursuing singing is to make sure you enjoy it and are skilled in the field. “Get an honest opinion from someone; otherwise you'll be investing in something that you aren't even good at!”

Music Spotlight: Theresa Dinh “I have been playing the oboe for over five years, mostly in band and now orchestra.” Theresa obviously loves playing the oboe and performing in concerts; in fact her favorite part about playing the oboe is that the oboe player gets to “tune the orchestra and play solos.” She also has a sense of pride in being one of the few oboe players in the orchestra. “It makes you feel special,” she says. Her advice to aspiring oboe players is to get private lessons, since learning to play the oboe is quite difficult. “[It is] crucial to your musical development.”

Painting Spotlight: Sarah Weeks Sarah loves to draw and paint. She says that her favorite part about drawing and painting is the reaction she receives when she shows others her pieces. Sarah is definitely driven when it comes to her craft, and she advises other students to be the same way. “[Drawing and painting] may seem difficult at times, but in the end it will all be worth it. The only way you can accomplish anything is if you have the right attitude and will to succeed.”

Cooking Spotlight: Amatulla Lloyd Amatulla has a very unique craft: culinary skills. She has been cooking since she was 4 and cooking without supervision since she was 8. The most rewarding part of cooking for her is preparing food and watching others enjoy her tasty creations. Her greatest advice is to not be discouraged by mistakes. “The best chef learns from each and every mistake, no matter how small or how large.”

Student Profiles

Ashley Van Guilder is a 12th grade homeschooled student who has been with FLVS since 7th grade.

How many courses have you taken with FLVS? I have taken all of my middle and high school classes with them; I am not sure how many exactly but I am pretty sure it is more than 20.

Do you have any specific stories about FLVS that you would like to share?

My favorite teacher is Mrs. Charlotte Bahm. She was the teacher of all my English classes. Because of her I’ve become a better writer.

What is your favorite thing about FLVS? My favorite thing about FLVS is that I can do classes that I would otherwise not be able to do and I can do them anywhere with Internet access.

Why did you start FLVS? I started FLVS to get an education that was different than everyone else's.

Why did you stay with FLVS? I stayed with FLVS because the teachers genuinely care about my success and because it was the best way for me to get my education while still having plenty of time for my family, which is especially important since I am going into the Navy.

Natalia Davis is a 12th grade homeschooled student who has successfully completed 13 courses with FLVS. She also served as a Student Ambassador.

Natalia will graduate this year and hopes to pursue a doctorate in Psychology.

If you could use one word to describe yourself, what would it be?

Random.

How has FLVS allowed you to achieve your goals?

FLVS has helped to give me a jump start on my courses and achieve much more than I could with homeschooling alone.

Which FLVS course has been your favorite?

I'd have to say that American History Conspiracy Code was my favorite course, and my teacher from that class, Mrs. Simmons, was also my favorite teacher.

If you could give your peers one piece of advice, what would it be?

If you feel like you're stuck, just start working. It's easier to start right away and work steadily than to procrastinate.

We Are the World, Fly FLVS

More than a thousand FLVS teachers and staff attended the Fine Arts Club original production, “Fly FLVS,” at the 2012 FLVS Professional Learning Conference. The performance emphasized FLVS’s global impact and how FLVS draws together students from all over the world. Students danced, sang and acted in front of a large crowd, after months of online rehearsals. It’s safe to say no eyes were dry after the finale, “We are the World.”

Student Sessions Student involvement was abundant at Momentum. A small group of Student Ambassadors created a superhero-themed skit that explained the various roles Student Ambassador Assistants (S.A.A) can play during instructors’ live sessions with students. For example, a Student Ambassador named “Chat Woman” discussed the role of chat moderator.

Soon after this presentation, five Florida Virtual School students with differing academic backgrounds discussed the FLVS educational methodology with instructors and FLVS leadership. The session was entitled “Roadblocks,” and was a constructive presentation of the challenges students face as public school, homeschool, and parttime students with FLVS.

November 14-15, 2012 87 presentations, 44 live lessons, 29 student sessions Over 800 students and staff attended the two-day world trip “It was so fun to watch students jetting from one continent to the next, and so exciting to observe the incredible talent and creativity of all the teachers, staff, and students who presented for this event. It was like a vacation on steroids that was both entertaining and educational!�

2013 Science Olympiad

Mary Kaider, Grade 10

Throughout the year Florida Virtual School has many activities that enrolled students can participate in, virtually or face-to-face. That’s where Science Olympiad comes in.

There are two Science Olympiad events during the school year: regionals, where any school can participate, and state, where you can participate via invite only. This year FLVS was able to participate in both events. There are many activities to participate in at Science Olympiad. With over 20 different science themed events from hands-on to question to research there's something for every scientist.

What is your favorite part about doing Science Olympiad?

Kathie S: The teammates. Just the way that we are trusted and the interest that young people have in science.

Mrs. Patterson: I love getting to spend time with the students on our team! It is so exciting for me as a teacher to see students want to learn new things and to be able to apply what they have learned to different situations.

What was the hardest thing about participating in Science Olympiad?

Victoria O: I think the hardest thing was accepting that I wasn’t going to know all the answers, Once I realized that, I was able to have the best time of my life!

Mrs. Patterson: I think Julie Young explained this better than I can. In the update to the school board she shared, ‘Most people don’t realize how unique and challenging it is to compete against students who get to see and work together on a daily basis, and yet our FLVS students still come away with top performances each year.’

What would you say to the students who are thinking about doing Science Olympiad?

Kathie S: Yes, yes, yes. I don’t like science at all, but I love doing Science Olympiad.

How can FLVS teachers get involved with Science Olympiad?

Mrs. Patterson: FLVS has an AMAZING staff support for Science Olympiad. In addition to coaching or providing tutoring support to students to help get ready, FLVS Foundation sponsored the entry fee to compete, teachers reached out to local bookstores to get resource books donated, and several non-science staff members volunteer to help run headquarters and verify scoring.

Would you do it again?

Victoria O: Most definitely! It was probably the most thrilling and fun experience I have had in my entire life.

2013 Science Olympiad

This year’s Florida Virtual School Science Olympiad team included Victoria Obert, Max Robinson, Kathie Sokolsky, Annie Tonnu and Gelan Wang.

Of the 17 events the FLVS team competed in, they were ranked top 10 in nine of the events.

February 5, 2013 120 participants joined in the celebration “I loved not only learning about this celebration and the cultural connections, but also hearing the language spoken. Each teacher did an amazing job of pronouncing the words multiple times so we could hear the inflection and tone, and encouraged participants to practice along with them. By the end, I was actually starting to get it!  It was a fantastic hour of cultural immersion and I couldn’t take my eyes off my screen.”

Courtney Avritt, Grade 11 On March 6 and 7, FLVS celebrated one of the greatest English writers in history by devoting two days to a Shakespeare Festival. Different sessions during the event analyzed the language used by Shakespeare, explored some of his greatest works, and examined his impact on contemporary culture.

FLVS students, teachers, and parents were all invited to share in the festival. Both returning participants and firsttimers enjoyed the event. FLVS student Mason said on the second day of the event that this was his first time attending the Shakespeare Festival, but that it was “so far so good!”

The celebration consisted of four different rooms each devoted to one of Shakespeare’s most influential works: Macbeth, Hamlet, Julius Caesar, and Othello. Within each room sessions were held on both days that were dedicated to various aspects of Shakespeare’s works. Lesson credits for FLVS classes could even be earned by attending these sessions. Student Abby said during the second day of the festival, “I’ve been in nearly seven sessions already and it’s amazing!”

A virtual performance by FLVS’s own Fine Arts Club, “Two Gentlemen of Nevora,” was also featured at the festival.

Based on Shakespeare’s Two Gentlemen of Verona, the play tells the tale of two friends who learn about the chaotic world of courting.

A Shakespeare Gallery displayed artwork, photography, writing, and videos created by FLVS students.

Visitors could even vote on their favorite pieces.

The response to the event was enthusiastic by all attendants. Roxana R., FLVS Student Ambassador, called the festival “amazing.” This response shows the success of the festival and nearly guarantees its return next year.

On April 23rd, a role model was born,

This story begins on a street in Venice,

One who would inspire writing and more.

With two men, Roderigo and Iago arguing.

He entertained the people of his days,

Roderigo’s lover was stolen by Othello, the moor,

With laughs, tears and a wonderful experience.

He composed plays, histories, poems and comedies,

Who insists that he stole her heart with his adventures.

His name was Shakespeare.

Iago casts spells on Othello making him jealous, He soon accuses his wife of not being innocent and kills her.

A saddening tragedy he wrote, Involving two young people who were madly in love.

The young Montague, Romeo, was first after another lover.

This leads to anger and confusion, ending with Othello’s suicide.

Othello.

As soon as he saw Juliet, the other woman disappeared from his heart.

This inspiration of literature, magic and more,

Their family feud led to the young people’s death,

Will always live on forever.

Romeo and Juliet.

His English is one of greatness and humor, His plays are full of beliefs and experience.

A love triangle was formed in this comedy, It all started with a young aristocratic woman.

She disguised herself as a male and was called Viola.

She wanted to work as a girl for the queen, But went as a man to the Duke, who fell for her.

Twelfth Night.

We thank him for providing us with his great literature, His name is Shakespeare.

FLVS Celebrates 3.14159 March 14 was Pi Day, the “holiday” celebrating the famous number, 3.14159. FLVS’ Beta Delta Sigma (BDS) Math Club chose to commemorate the day with the Pi Day Amazing Race.

There were seven Blackboard Collaborate rooms, each with activities for students to complete as fast as possible, as they tried to be one of the top three to finish.

The activities focused on Pi, naturally, and consisted of math trivia and Geometry. As students were moved from room to room, the questions became increasingly difficult. Each room contained a trivia question “clue” the student had to answer before being moved to the next room.

The event was led and moderated by student members of the club, each with their own “math identity” such as “Poly Nominal” and “Sir Cumference.”

“What a huge event this Pi-Day Amazing Race was,” said Mrs. Mae Martin. “As sponsors of Beta Delta Sigma, we couldn’t have been more proud of our club members for putting on an amazing event. They were in charge and played such a major role in the success. We had 114 participate – that is enormous! Like HOLY COW big!!!”

Day at the Capitol On Tuesday, April 3, FLVS students and administrators took their TTYL (Texting Takes Young Lives) campaign to the Florida Capitol.

Driver’s Ed instructor Mrs. Debbie Adams led the charge for the passage of SB 52, which called for a statewide ban on texting while driving. The bill passed 39 to 1 and will take effect in October 2013.

Virge: The Virtual Edge Samantha Morris, Grade 10 Virge, also known as The Virtual Edge, is the official FLVS literary magazine created for students, by students. The magazine features art, short stories, poems, and photography.

But who are the people behind the publication? The Virge team is made up of several student editors, who edit copy and design layouts for the magazine, and the sponsor, Mrs. Newton. Here are some reflections from the team.

What do you like most about editing for Virge?

“I like reading the different pieces of writing that I get; they are all so different and they are very good.” – Nicole S. “I personally love proofreading and editing. It’s Only Natural

VIRTUAL SCIENCE FAIR The 7th Annual Virtual Science Fair ran from January to April 2013. Created to “promote a real life scientific atmosphere in our virtual world,” VSF was open to any student enrolled in an FLVS course.

Students created their projects using PowerPoint slides instead of display boards, and presented to a panel of judges online.

Florida Virtual School Students Give Back to Community at Club Day 2013 Samantha Morris, Grade 11 Talia Fradkin, Grade 9 On May 18, FLVS students gathered in Winter Garden from all over Florida.

Students who only knew each other by name in online study or club sessions got the chance to come together and put faces with the names.

According to Jeff Murphy, Senior Director of Instructional Operations and Instructional Support for FLVS, “This is the fourth year for Club Day, and I think it’s great for students to meet face to face after having worked together all year at a distance. It’s a celebration.”

The fellowship that followed was truly remarkable. Each club presented an activity and each club was recognized. It was a way of marking an end to a successful year of both academic and social growth.

Florida Virtual School has established itself as an instructional institution with boundless opportunities for online collaboration and communication. But what about the chances it provides to better the community?

Fueled by the motivation of a handful of Student Ambassadors and National English Honor Society “cyber scholars,” FLVS hosted two donation drives at this year’s Club Day. One drive, hosted by the Student Ambassadors, was a donation project for the National House of Hope, an organization that provides various methods of assistance to emotionally-troubled teens.

The drive’s slogan, “Do More than Hope - Give,” certainly rings true to the action behind the movement. Over one hundred FLVS club members donated paper goods and snacks to the drive.

The project was established by Ambassador Katherine M. and her enthusiasm behind the project was evident. “I think it’s awesome that Club Day is an opportunity for us to have fun in person… imagine how much we can do if everyone attending Club Day participates [in a community service project].”

After the project came to fruition, Student Ambassadors President Talia Fradkin commented on its success. “It is very moving the way everyone rallied around the cause and worked together to make the donation drive happen. I am so proud to be a part of it.”

But National House of Hope wasn’t the only offline community service movement that occurred at FLVS’s beloved annual celebration. The National English Honor Society Cyber Scholars chapter worked diligently both online and offline to develop an inter-club donation project for Better World Books. One of the quintessential goals of NEHS is improving literacy, so that’s exactly what the scholars set forth to do.

The society’s leaders brainstormed a way to host an effective book drive, and decided that the only way to ensure participation was to host it offline, instead of requiring reports of individual book donations. Shortly after this conclusion was made, Club Day 2013 dawned. It was time to improve literacy one book at a time.

Over one hundred fifty books were donated to Better World Books. This organization improves literacy by selling donated books and distributing the profits to various campaigns such as Books for Africa. A team of three cyber scholars, Book Drive Leader Samantha Morris and Co-Presidents Maggie Poling and Jenny Ruben, and sponsor Mrs. Cami Miranda brainstormed donation methods via email prior to the execution of the project.

“The NEHS Book Drive was very successful this year. By inviting our fellow FLVS club members to participate, we were able to donate a large sum of books to students in need. Due to the success of this year's NEHS Book Drive, I'm already looking forward to the one we're planning for next year,” Poling commented.

Ruben, a graduating senior, reflected on the drive’s impact, “I think it was a huge success, and I believe children will [admire] this contribution to their education, and knowledge in general.”

Club Day has been known as the time virtual students meet face-to-face. But instead of simply meeting this year, they donated to worthy causes. All it took was for each student to step in with a smile and a paper good or book in hand, and FLVS was able to make a difference as a community of giving individuals.

FLVS FT Celebrates Class of 2013 Florida Virtual School Full Time celebrated the graduation of the Class of 2013, its inaugural graduating class, on June 1.

This was a major milestone, as approximately 250 seniors from around the state graduated and received a FLVS FT high school diploma. Families gathered from across the state to watch graduates participate in an official commencement ceremony at the Omni Rosen Plaza Hotel. FLVS FT High School Principal Aura Plair hosted the ceremony, which featured all the hallmarks of a traditional high school graduation, including caps and gowns, the procession of graduates, and remarks from Julie Young, President and Chief Executive Officer for Florida Virtual School. Special guest Mawi Asgedom delivered the commencement address.

I am a singer, artist, and a musician.

I love to go on adventures with friends, and have jam sessions.

Freshmen: plan to graduate a semester early!!! Even if you don’t want to now, you will. When senioritis kicks in, you’ll thank yourself. Then you can laugh at all your friends who are crying, wishing they were done already. Senioritis is a real thing and it’s no fun. Trust me.

How do you feel FLVS caters to your learning style?

FLVS caters to my learning style by allowing me the ability to teach myself in subjects that I find it difficult to learn in a classroom setting. A perfect example is math. I can’t stand waiting for someone to understand the material before moving on and, at the same time, I don’t like when I feel like the rest of the class understands the material but not me. FLVS allows me to go my own pace.

I would advise them to use their time wisely, and don’t procrastinate.

I work retail, and I absolutely love my job. I am also an artist and love to paint.

I'm able to work at my own pace and when I need to I can contact my teacher for help and they get back to me either the same or next day.

Stay focused and work hard. If you stay on track then there's no way you can fail at this program.

I just started playing guitar and I really enjoy that and I also just started taking up cooking so I find different recipes and I make them for my parents.
