Sept. 19, 2009 • LaVell Edwards Stadium • Provo, UT The Set-up After breaking even in a pair of games decided in the waning seconds - just five days apart - Florida State takes on No. 7 Brigham Young University in its first visit to LaVell Edwards Stadium. FSU quarterback Christian Ponder and BYU’s Max Hall - two of the nation’s top passers - lead their prolific offenses. The Cougars’ defense has allowed just 16 points in two victories over then No. 3 Oklahoma (14-13) and Tulane (54-3). This is BYU’s homeopener and FSU’s first road game of the season. The Seminoles and Cougars have tangled twice before, both in season-openers at neutral sites. FSU scored a 44-28 win in the 1991 Disneyland Pigskin Classic at Anaheim, Cal., and was a 29-3 winner in Jacksonville, Fla. to open the 2000 season.

WESTERN TRIPS GOOD TO ‘NOLES While the vast majority of Florida State games in Bobby Bowden’s 34 seasons have been played close to home, the Seminoles have faired well on those rare ventures into the Mountain and Pacific time zones. Heading into Saturday’s game against No. 7 BYU in Provo, Utah, FSU boasts an 8-2 record on the road out west and is 4-1 against ranked opponents. Four of those previous western adventures have come in bowl games, including three trips to the Fiesta Bowl (Tempe, Ariz.) and one to the Emerald Bowl (San Francisco, Calif.). TOP 10 A trip to No. 7 Brigham Young provides unranked Florida State an opportunity to get back into the nation’s conscience following its season-opening loss to Miami. The Seminoles were knocked from their preseason No. 18 slot by the 38-34 defeat. FSU has not finished in the Top 10 since closing 2000 at No. 5, but it has had some success against Top 10 competition. The Seminoles are 4-3 over their last seven games against Top 10 opponents, including a 27-17 win at No. 2 Boston College on Nov. 3, 2007. RANKED TEAMS BRING OUT THE BEST Though Florida State is 5-11 against Top 10 teams since losing to No. 1 Oklahoma 13-2 on Jan. 3, 2001 in the BCS Orange Bowl national championship game, the Seminoles have been no pushovers. Of those defeats, six have been decided by 8 points or fewer, including a one-point loss at No. 1 Miami (2002), a two-point loss to No. 10 Miami (2004 Orange Bowl) and a three-point loss to No. 3 Penn State, 26-23 (2006 Orange Bowl) in triple-overtime. BYU-FSU HAS HEISMAN CONNECTIONS This marks the third meeting between Brigham Young and Florida State and the two previous encounters each included a Heisman Trophy winner under center. In 1991, BYU quarterback Ty Detmer squared off against FSU’s Casey Weldon in the Disney Kickoff Classic in Anaheim. The Seminoles won that game behind Weldon, who was the Heisman runner-up in ’91. Detmer finished third in the balloting that season, but captured the Heisman a year later. The 1993 Heisman winner, FSU quarterback Charlie Ward, was a reserve on the ’91 team. Seminoles’ quarterback Chris Weinke jump-started his 2000 Heisman-winning season with a win in the opener against the Cougars in Jacksonville. Detmer and Weinke are now business partners in an investment company based in Austin, Texas. ‘NOLES ROLLED IN TWO PREVIOUS MEETINGS Florida State will try and improve on its 2-0 record against BYU, after posting a 44-28 win in 1991 and a 29-3 victory in 2000. The Seminoles have had their way with the Cougars on both sides of the ball in the previous meetings, piling up 543 total yards (6.39 yds. per play) in ‘91 scored and 375 total yards (4.3 ypp) in ’00. They have out-passed BYU in both contests by a combined total of 643-456. Scoring in seven of eight previous quarters, the Seminoles have capitalized on six turnovers and limited to Cougars to 31 total rushing yards in two games. BYU finished with minus-2 rushing yards on 24 attempts in the 200 meeting. FSU, which has an 8-4 advantage in sacks, has also scored a safety in each of the prior meetings. SERIES SHORTS Florida State graduate assistant coach Terrell Buckley intercepted BYU quarterback Ty Detmer in the 1991 game. … Seminoles’ defensive tackle Dan Footman was credited with a sack of Detmer for a safety in the ’91 game. Footman’s son Dan Hicks is a freshman on the 2009 FSU team. … This will mark the first time FSU has faced a BYU team coached by anyone other LaVell Edwards, though they will play at the Provo Stadium named in his honor. … When Edwards and FSU’s Bobby Bowden met in 2000 at the Pigskin Classic in Jacksonville, they had a combined 555 wins between them (Edwards 251 in his 29th season and Bowden 304 in his 33rd season).

Offensive Notes: PONDER’S FOURTH QUARTER COMEBACKS Junior quarterback Christian Ponder led Florida State on a fourth quarter comeback to give the Seminoles their 19-9 victory over Jacksonville State. The Seminoles entered the fourth quarter of Saturday’s game trailing 9-7 and outscored the Gamecocks 12-0. It was the second fourth quarter comeback – and second time in 10 games that Ponder has engineered during his career as Florida State’s starter. He brought the Seminoles back from a deficit against N.C. State with just over 10 minutes remaining in last season’s road win. A dropped touchdown pass on the final play against Miami in the opener this season, and an end zone fumble by Marcus Sims against Georgia Tech last season denied Ponder and the ‘Noles two other late-game rallies. His two-game total is more than 200 yards better than his previous two-game best passing total of 413 yards against Miami (159 yards) and N.C. State (254), and N.C. State (254) and Virginia Tech (159) in consecutive games last season. … Ponder has passed for at least 294 yards in each of the Seminoles’ first two games this season. In 2008 - his first season as a starter – he passed for more that 200 yards only once (against N.C. State) and threw for 180 yards or more only four times during his redshirt sophomore season; … Ponder rushed for seven yards in the Seminoles’ victory over Jacksonville State despite losing 25 yards on two sacks by the Gamecock defense. It marked the seventh consecutive game that Ponder has gained positive rushing yards. Only twice during his career as a starter (15 games) has he finished with negative rushing yards in a game (against Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech in 2008). PONDER FINDS ONLY HIS RECEIVERS Ponder completed 22 passes against Jacksonville State and was interception-free for the second time in his last three starts. He has not been intercepted in seven of his 16 career appearances. The Seminoles are undefeated (7-0) when Ponder completes a game without throwing an interception. RECENT 300-YARD PASSING GAMES Ponder’s first career 300-yard passing game against Jacksonville State (324 yards) was the first by a Seminole quarterback since Nov. 3, 2007 when Drew Weatherford passed for 354 yards in a 27-17 victory over No. 2 Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Ponder became the 13th quarterback in school history to throw for at least 300 yards in a single game at least once in his career. JONES FINDS THE END ZONE TWICE Sophomore running back Ty Jones rushed for a career-high two touchdowns against Jacksonville State and pushed his two-game, season rushing total to 99 yards on 22 carries (4.5 yards per carry). He has been the Seminoles’ leading rusher in both games this season and in three consecutive games (counting FSU’s Champs Sports Bowl victory over Wisconsin). Jones has already matched his four-game, 2008 season total for rushing yards (99) in two games this season. He has doubled his per game rushing average, from 24.8 in ’08 to 49.5 in ’09 and doubled his touchdown production (from 1 to 2). JONES IS CHASING SMITH’S STREAK Jones has been Florida State’s leading rusher in the Seminoles last three games (vs. Wisconsin in the 2008 Champs Sports Bowl and against Miami and Jacksonville State to begin the 2009 season.) He enters Saturday’s game against Brigham Young looking to become the first FSU rusher to lead the team in rushing in four consecutive games since Antone Smith strung together a five-game streak in 2007 against N.C. State (Oct. 6), Wake Forest (Oct. 11), Miami (Oct. 20), Duke (Oct. 27) and Boston College (Nov. 3). GOODMAN BECOMING PONDER’S GO-TO GUY With 13 receptions in Florida State’s first two games, redshirt senior wide receiver Richard Goodman is developing quite a connection with quarterback Christian Ponder. He has caught 13 of Ponder’s 46 completions (28.3 percent) in the first two games of the season. Goodman, who did not play during the 2008 season while recovering from a broken leg, has caught more passes for more yards in the first two games of the 2009 season (13-162) than he did during his freshman and sophomore seasons combined (7-63). He is quickly approaching statistics that would rank as single-season, career-best numbers. Entering the game at Brigham Young, Goodman needs only eight receptions and 21 receiving yards to establish single-season career-highs. Season 2005 2006 2007 2009 Totals

SEMINOLES IN THE RED ZONE Florida State was a perfect two of two, thanks to a pair of Ty Jones rushing touchdowns, on red zone conversion opportunities against Jacksonville State. Jones’ second score came with 35 seconds remaining, all but sealing the 19-9 victory. The Seminoles have an 80 percent success rate (four of five) when its offense gets into the red zone in the first two games of the 2009 season.

THE OWENS-GOODMAN RECEIVING TANDEM Florida State’s redshirt senior receiver tandem of Rod Owens and Richard Goodman is working to become the most productive passcatching duo in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Through the first two games of the season, the pair has accounted for 20 receptions for 240 yards. Goodman leads the ACC in receptions per game (6.5) and no other league team has two receivers with more combined receptions. FIRST DOWN CAZ Senior tight end Caz Piurowski has caught five passes for a singleseason career-high 111 yards in the first two games of the 2009 season. Of those five catches, four have moved the chains for a first down and three have come on touchdown drives, including his own 10-yard TD reception against Miami. His 53-yard reception against Jacksonville State is the longest of the season for an FSU player, and the longest by a Seminole tight end since Lonnie Johnson (78 yds. vs. Clemson, 1993). PIUROWSKI APPROACHING CAREER-HIGH NUMBERS Senior tight end Caz Piurowski has caught five passes for 111 yards and one touchdown in the first two games of the 2009 season. He has already caught as many passes as he did in 10 games during the 2007 season and needs only four receptions to establish new singleseason personal best for receptions. Piurowski is averaging a singleseason career-high 2.5 catches per game – more than triple his previous career-high of 0.8 catches per game (eight catches in 10 games during the 2008 season). PONDER SURPASSES 500-YARD RUSHING Junior quarterback Christian Ponder rushed for 28 yards against Miami in the Seminoles’ season opener and added 7 yards against Jacksonville State. His performances pushed his career rushing total to 509 yards on 139 carries, good for a 3.7 yards per rushing attempt average and a 31.8 yards per game average.

PONDER’S RUSHING TOUCHDOWNS Junior quarterback Christian Ponder scored the fifth rushing touchdown of his career in the second quarter on a nine-yard run against Miami. It was his fifth rushing touchdown in his last six regular season games and the longest touchdown run of his career. Ponder scored one rushing touchdown in four consecutive games last season.

EASTERLING MAKES INCREDIBLE RECOVERY Redshirt sophomore wide receiver Taiwan Easterling made an incredible return to the field against Miami in the Seminoles’ season opener with two catches for 21 yards and one touchdown and one kickoff return for 19 yards. He returned to the field less than seven months after rupturing his right Achilles’ tendon. Easterling was injured during off-season conditioning drills on Feb. 12, 2009 and had surgery to repair the tendon on Feb. 21. He is Florida State’s top returning career receiver as the 2009 season has begun.

Defensive Notes: DEFENSE PITCHES SECOND HALF SHUTOUT Florida State’s defense enters Saturday’s game against No. 7 Brigham Young not having allowed a point in more than two quarters and a total span of 37:13 of playing time. The Seminoles’ defense blanked Jacksonville State in the second half of their 19-9 victory. In not allowing a point in the third and fourth quarters against Jacksonville State the Seminoles pitched their first two shutout quarters of the 2009 season. FSU HOLDS JACKSONVILLE STATE TO NINE POINTS Florida State limited Jacksonville State to nine points, marking the fourth time in the last two seasons - and ninth time in the last five seasons – that coordinator Mickey Andrews’ defense has allowed less than 10 points in a game. In the last five years, the Seminoles have pitched two shutouts (33-0 against Virginia on Nov., 4, 2006, and 690 against Western Carolina on Sept. 6, 2008) and held one more team to only a field goal (37-3 victory at Maryland on Nov. 22, 2008). FSU DEFENSE RACKS UP SACKS VS. JAX STATE Led by senior linebacker Dekoda Watson’s career-high 3.5 sacks the Seminoles’ defense earned a season-high seven total sacks in its victory over Jacksonville State. It was the most sacks in a game by the Florida State defense in four seasons, dating to its nine-sack barrage against rival Miami in a 10-7 victory on Sept. 5, 2005. Since the beginning of the 2005 season, Florida State has earned at least six sacks in the single games four times and is 4-0 in those games.

It marked the third time in the last five games (also against Wisconsin and Maryland in 2008) and the eighth time in the last two seasons that the Seminoles’ defense has not allowed a rushing touchdown. MOODY GIVES FSU A LIFT IN FIRST CAREER START Redshirt freshman rover Nick Moody, who was playing in his second career game and making his first career start against Jacksonville State, was tied for the Seminoles’ lead in tackles with 10. After recording only one tackle in his debut as a Seminole against Miami, he led Florida State with seven unassisted tackles and shared a sack with senior linebacker Dekoda Watson for the first sack of his career. Moody’s sack of JSU quarterback Ryan Perrilloux ended a Gamecock drive early in the fourth quarter of the Seminoles’ victory. SEMINOLES STOUT WHEN IT COUNTS The Florida State defense allowed zero points, 28 total yards and only two offensive first downs in the fourth quarter of its victory over Jacksonville State. The Seminoles began the quarter without the ball and trialing 9-7 and finished the quarter and the game with a 19-9 victory. Florida State’s defense recorded four of its seven sacks and stuffed the Gamecocks for minus-two rushing yards in the decisive fourth quarter. His 3.5 sacks allowed the Seminoles to register a season-high seven sacks in the game. Collecting nine tackles, Watson was only one off of his career-high of 10 stops, set at Colorado on September 27, 2007. Watson was credited with 1.5 sacks in the fourth quarter – both of which came on a third down play and forced the Gamecocks to punt the ball to the Seminoles. He sacked JSU’s Ryan Perrilloux with 3:00 remaining in the game and forced a punt that gave FSU the ball and began its game-winning drive. Watson ranks second in the ACC in both sacks and tackles for loss. WATSON MOVES INTO TOP 16 FOR CAREER TFL’S With 3.5 tackles for loss in the Seminoles’ victory over Jacksonville State, senior linebacker Dekoda Watson moved into 16th place on Florida State’s all-time career list for tackles for loss. He is only 1.5 tackles for loss from moving into the Seminoles’ all-time top 15 and only seven from moving into the all-time top 10 at Florida State.

SMITH EARNS CARER-HIGH 10 TACKLES Junior middle linebacker Kendall Smith recorded a career-high 10 tackles in the Seminoles’ victory over Jacksonville State. After a fivetackle performance against Miami in the season-opener, Smith has 15 tackles in two games – one more than he had in 13 games as a true freshman and only nine fewer than he had in 13 games as a sophomore. Smith tied his career-high with five tackles against Miami and doubled his single-game career-high against Jacksonville State. FROSH MCDANIEL GETS INTO THE DEFENSIVE ACT True freshman defensive lineman Jacobbi McDaniel has six tackles in the first two games including five in the win over Jacksonville State. He has found his way behind the line of scrimmage in both games and is one of only two FSU defenders (also Dekoda Watson) with at least one tackle for loss in both games. McDaniel recorded one tackle for loss against Miami, two against Jacksonville State and is fourth in the ACC in tackles for loss. He was credited with a sack and a forced fumble, which teammate Kevin McNeil picked up and returned 33 yards for the clinching TD with 21 seconds remaining in the game.

TWO SCORES FOR THE DEFENSE Senior defensive end Kevin McNeil and junior defensive end Markus White have returned a fumble and an interception, respectively, for touchdowns this season. The Seminoles have six defensive touchdowns and eight defensive scores in last 15 games. McNeil’s 33-yard fumble return against Jacksonville State was FSU’s fourth in the last six games. White’s interception return marked the second time in the last 10 months that an interior defensive lineman had retuned an interception for a touchdown. White was lined up as nose guard when he dropped into coverage. Neefy Moffett, who was lined up as the nose guard, retuned an interception in the Seminoles’ 41-27 victory over Clemson on Nov. 8, 2008. Head Coach Bobby Bowden 32 AND COUNTING Bowden continues to build on his College of Football Hall of Fame legacy, one year at a time. Last season’s 9-4 record extended the program’s streak of consecutive winning seasons to 32 under his watch. The only losing season in his FSU career came in his first year on the job when Florida State posted a 5-6 record. Since then the Seminoles have won more than they have lost every year. No other university in the FBS can claim to have a streak of 32 consecutive winning seasons. ... Bowden has also led the Seminoles to 27 consecutive bowl appearances, which is also the nation’s longest active streak. ALL-TIME FBS COACHING VICTORIES Coach W-L-T Win Pct. 1. Bowden is only the third coach in college football history to coach in 500 or more games - joining the legendary Amos Alonzo Stagg (last coached at Pacific in 1946) and Penn State’s Joe Paterno (currently active) who coached the 500th game of his Penn State career when he led his Nittany Lions into the Alamo Bowl in 2007. After Bowden and Paterno, the closest active coach is Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer, who has coached 335 games so far in his career. Bowden reached another milestone later last year, when he logged his 400th game at Florida State in a win over Clemson.

Special Teams Notes: FSU THROWING ANOTHER BLOCK PARTY With Kevin McNeil’s fourth quarter blocked field goal against Jack sonville State – the first of the season by Florida State - the Seminoles pushed their blocked kick total to 128 in the Bobby Bowden era. That’s a span of 406 games over the course of Bowden’s 34 seasons, with the Seminoles averaging just over one blocked kick every three games. To provide a little more recent context to FSU’s prowess, it ranks 10th among FBS schools for blocked kicks over the past eight seasons (2002-present). 1. Fresno State 2. Texas 3. Kansas State Louisiana 5. Boise State Kentucky 7. Virginia Tech 8. Florida UCLA 10. Florida State

General Notes: HUDSON: EVERYBODY’S ALL-AMERICAN Junior left guard Rodney Hudson is well on his way to becoming the most decorated offensive lineman in Florida State history. After earning Freshman All-American honors in 2007, Hudson gained some national attention as a sophomore, after earning first-team All-ACC honors. Entering his third season as a starter, the Mobile, Ala. Native has been a consensus first-team All-American in the preseason publications. College Football News rates him as the No. 1 guard in the country. As a result, Hudson is a candidate for the Lombardi Award, presented to the nation’s lineman of the year. PONDER THE SCHOLAR Redshirt junior quarterback Christian Ponder’s star is rising on the football field, but his academic prowess is already in the “other-worldly” class. After earning his bachelor’s degree in finance (3.72 gpa, Magna Cum Laude) in the summer of 2008, Ponder began working on his MBA and will graduate in May. He is currently carrying a 3.72 gpa in the post-graduate program. In a span of 4 ½ years Ponder will have completed his undergraduate and graduate degrees, with a year 2009 Seminole Football

of athletic eligibility remaining. A three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll member, he has been on the Dean’s List at Florida State four times and posted a 4.0 GPA last fall as a graduate student. GRADUATES ABOUND Five current Seminoles have already picked up their degrees from Florida State, headed by Ponder, one of three players already in a graduate school program. Long snapper Zach Aronson and cornerback Ochuko Jenije earned their undergraduate degrees in sports management and are now in the international marketing & management communications, and higher education graduate programs, respectively. Free safety Jamie Robinson and defensive tackle Kendrick Stewart are pursuing second bachelor’s degrees after completing undergraduate work in social science and sports management, respectively. All five are projected starters against the Gamecocks. BEAR OF A SCHEDULE With 11 of 12 opponents on the Seminoles 2009 schedule coming off bowl appearances last season, FSU’s slate ranks as one of the toughest in the nation. It features non-conference dates with Jacksonville State – an FCS opponent coming off an 8-3 season - BYU, South Florida and defending national champion Florida. Tack on the eight Atlantic Coast Conference games and the combined record of the Seminoles 12 foes is 101-55 – a .657 winning percentage. That’s more wins by opponents than any other team in the country. Furthermore, FSU’s FBS opponents were 93-49 (.645), which is also the most of any FCS program in the country. EIGHT IS ENOUGH - FOR NOW Eight true freshmen played against Miami in last week’s season-opener, significantly fewer than the 22 Seminoles who played in the 2008 opener against Western Carolina. Still, it was no less of a thrill for Greg Reid, Dustin Hopkins, Chris Thompson, Lonnie Pryor, Jajuan Harley, Brandon Jenkins, Willie Haulstead and Jacobbi McDaniel, who made their collegiate debuts. HIGH MARKS FROM THE 4-LETTER NETWORK The Labor Day night clash between Miami and Florida State, nationally televised on ESPN, drew an amazing overnight rating of 5.6. That should not be surprising since Miami and FSU are responsible for drawing the top two regular season ratings games on ESPN in the network’s history. To give Monday’s game some context, last weekend’s Oklahoma-BYU game drew a 3.1 overnight mark, just ahead of Navy-Ohio State (3.0). A year ago in the same television slot, Tennessee-UCLA earned a 4.4 share. Of course it didn’t hurt that the ‘Canes and ‘Noles put on a good show. The 38-34 victory by the Hurricanes proved to be an Instant Classic and was replayed Tuesday on ESPN Classic. FORMER ’NOLES NUMBER 31 ON NFL ROSTERS

Florida State continues to be well-represented in the NFL, with 30 former ‘Noles appearing on opening day, active rosters. The list includes three rookies, led by Charlotte Panthers defensive end andsecond-round pick Everrete Brown and undrafted free agents Garrison Sanborn, a long snapper with Buffalo, and Houston linebacker Toddrick Verdell. At the opposite end of the experience spectrum is 13year veteran offensive tackle Walter Jones (Seattle) and 12-year veterans, cornerback Samari Rolle (Baltimore) and offensive tackle Tra Thomas (Jacksonville). Kicker Sebastian Janikowski (Oakland) and wide receiver Laveranues Coles (Cincinnati) are 10-year veterans.
