In the beginning, it was cousins Steven Shapiro and Ron Pertnoy. Steven was making television commercials, while Ron had built one home in Wellington. When the two got together, magic happened — the melding of construction with marketing.

The Shapiro-Pertnoy Companies was born in 1978. “Because we didn’t come up in the building business, our approach was merchandising- and marketingoriented,” Steven recalled. “We had

slightly better designs than most of the competition and marketed them a heck of a lot better, so we sold a few more houses. In the late 1970s, [master developer] Gould owned Wellington and made it very easy for builders like us to buy land and build homes.”
