ADVERTORIAL

The War on Cellulite: A Weapon that Really Works An Interview with Dr. Sara J. Bernstein, Medical Director of Rejuvia Medspa “Cottage cheese, orange peel, hail damage. By any other name, cellulite still throws most women into a tizzy. In a recent survey, eighty-two percent of women reported having cellulite, most believing they could minimize its appearance with diet and exercise. In fact, cellulite can’t always be eliminated by diet and exercise alone.” says Dr. Sara Bernstein of Rejuvia Medspa in Wellington, FL. What causes Cellulite? “Cellulite isn’t a fat problem: it’s a structural problem below the skin. Women who have cellulite tend to have connective tissue that is arranged differently. The connective tissue forms chamber-like structures that cause or encourage fat to bulge upward and outward into the dermis. Women tend to get cellulite around knees, saddlebags and buttocks, because they have three layers of fat in these areas instead of just one.”

Great! How much does it cost? “Cellulaze is a very precise and individualized treatment. Without an inperson consultation and a complete evaluation of the areas to be treated, it is inappropriate to attempt to provide an accurate estimate. With that said, the average treatment starts around $6,500.” Dr. Bernstein performs Cellulaze along with many other cosmetic treatments at Rejuvia Medspa in Wellington.

Why do women get cellulite more than men? “The structure of collagen (the main protein of connective tissue) in women has the appearance of a picket fence, whereas in men it looks more like a cross-linked fence. So you can see the cross-linked structure is much stronger and will hold fat in better.”

If you are interested in Cellulaze or any other treatments, please call Rejuvia to schedule your personalized consultation or treatment.

An FDA approved long-lasting solution! “Recently, the FDA approved Cellulaze®, the first and only long-lasting treatment for cellulite. Cellulaze is a one-time treatment to reduce the appearance of cellulite. It’s a unique laser treatment that attacks the very structure of cellulite. Only Cellulaze attacks the brittle structure beneath the skin that is the real cause of cellulite’s dimpled appearance. Cellulaze increases your skin’s natural depth for a smoother, healthier look that lasts — all from just one simple treatment.”

living proof. A few months before the summer Olympics, I fell off my horse and completely shattered my knee. When the doctors told me I needed surgery, I was devastated. How could I recover in time to qualify for the U.S. team? To give me my best shot, I needed a stellar orthopedic team and found it at Wellington Regional. My surgery was on January 14 and by April, I was back in the saddle. Thanks to specialized care, I qualified for the Olympic team and went on to compete in London. I am living proof of first-class orthopedics at Wellington Regional.

We are proud to have collaborated with many businesses to launch their new ventures and help existing ones grow. We remain a leader in supporting nonprofit organizations, helping them tell their stories, and we have developed partnerships with many key decision makers in our community. Now celebrating ten years of success, our monthly magazine has a wide circulation, including a paid subscriber list and bulk distribution in more than 125 locations throughout the Wellington area. With record-breaking views online for our digital interactive issue and tens of thousands of impressions on Facebook, we know that Wellington The Magazine continues to fill a need, reaching the many people interested in our community, both here at home, and across the world. This month, we are excited to launch our newly interactive and dynamic web site, with an online social calendar and digital magazine issue, which is forever evolving and expanding. Thank you, Wellington, for 10 years of support, not only with our publication, but for the idea of building your local magazine into something greater than itself. Without our readers, advertisers, shoppers and event-goers, we could have never made it this far. We are humbled and grateful for the engaged and creative community of which we are a small part, and we look forward to the next decade! We hope you enjoy our annual polo-themed edition of Wellington The Magazine, as we celebrate the start of the new season.

Weight-Loss

Resistance

BY KENNETH N. WOLINER, M.D., A.B.F.M.

Jessica had a purpose for her consultation with me. “New year,

same old resolution – get the weight off.” Tired of being overweight, she wanted to fix her metabolism once and for all and to be thin. “So what have you tried in the past,” I inquired. “Dr. Woliner, what haven’t I tried you mean.” Jessica continued, “I fall for whatever quick weight loss scheme that comes around [1]. You know, ’30 lbs, 30 days, $30’.” “How’d that work for you?” “Well, it wasn’t $30. Somehow they got me to sign a contract for over $2,000. And you know, I would have gladly paid that if I only got results.” “I can assure you that I will be honest and upfront with you. A patient has to have faith in her doctor.” “That was probably my problem. I never really saw a doctor. Even at the so-called medical clinics, the doctor was only there for 3 hours a week and the girl that works up at the front desk was the one doing the consultations, dispensing me my HCG, and selling me other pills.” “The Sun-Sentinel ran an expose on HCG diet clinics showing how they offered more hype than help [2]. On these crash diets, you might lose some weight, but you’re also likely lose your hair, develop life-threatening heart arrhythmias, and gain the weight back [3].” “I’m done with fad diets and clinics that focus only on weight-loss. I need a doctor to look at all of me, and find out why I have a weight problem to begin with.” “I’m not just a doctor who could prescribe appetite suppressants; I’m a board-certified family medicine physician with a degree in Nutrition from Cornell. I prefer to look at the causes of weight gain, and treat them instead.” I proceeded with my 80-minute new patient exam, “You’re looking rundown. Thinning hair, fatigue and muscle spasms. You know, constant dieting can cause CENTRAL HYPOTHYROIDISM, low iron, and electrolyte imbalances. We should check for all those. “Since you’re fasting today, we can do a KORR INDIRECT CALORIMETRY test to measure your metabolism [4].” Jessica’s metabolism measured at “minus 18% less than normal” and blood tests confirmed that her thyroid had shut down (normal TSH, but other thyroid tests abnormal) [5]. “Your low magnesium can cause those muscle spasms, and even though you’re not anemic, your iron isn’t adequate to grow hair or keep your energy levels up [6].” “Is there a way I can jumpstart things?” “I won’t make the false promise of a pound a day, but you’ll see results pretty quickly. My diet suggestions will make it easier to get adequate protein in each day, causing your metabolism to recover, but until that happens; we’ll need to prescribe T3-based thyroid medication. We could also do iron injections to give your hair raw materials to grow again [7].” 3 months and 20 pounds lighter, Jessica was very upbeat. “The way I’m going, this is one New Year’s Resolution that will be easy to keep.”

Constant dieting can cause central hypothyroidism.

Council Unsure On Election Legal Fees Members of the Wellington Village Council agreed last month to get other legal opinions before deciding whether to repay Mayor Bob Margolis and Councilman John Greene for legal fees accrued during the 2012 election. In a 2-1 vote, council members decided to seek an opinion from the Florida Attorney General’s Office, as well as a private attorney specializing in election law. Councilwoman Anne Gerwig cast the dissenting vote, while Margolis and Greene did not vote. The issue stems from the March 2012 election, when votes were improperly tallied on election night. In response, candidates sought legal representation. Village Attorney Laurie Cohen explained that state law allows, in some cases, for reimbursement of legal fees, but only to public officials acting in their official capacity. “Although I think you can argue fairly successfully that there is a public purpose, I was not able to find any case law where a candidate was entitled to be able to receive public funds for an election dispute,” she said. Councilman Howard Coates, an attorney, agreed on getting an outside opinion. “I do believe there is arguably a public purpose from the standpoint of achieving a proper result from an election,” he said. Gerwig didn’t believe the candidates required legal representation. “No one here filed lawsuits,” she said. “None of us asked for this situation, and I don’t think we should bear the burden of those legal fees.” Limited Pierson Access OK — Owners of the Equestrian Village site must temporarily hire additional Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office deputies to help ease traffic at horse crossings. The Wellington Village Council voted unanimously Nov. 26 to amend the special-use permit for the site to allow access by trailers and competitors. Wellington Equestrian Partners, the entity that owns the dressage site on the corner of South Shore Blvd. and Pierson Road, will have to pay deputies to be stationed at the site for two hours before and after each event, when the Pierson Road access is open. The stipulation will

remain until show promoters install a flashing yellow signaled beacon that will allow riders to cross the street safely. When council members agreed to a lawsuit settlement, they agreed to let show promoters request the ability to use the access so long as certain conditions were met. As one of the conditions, striping, flashing amber lights and signage are required to identify the horse crossing on Pierson Road, but the flashing lights had not been installed as of the November meeting. Councilman Matt Willhite thought the requirements should be met before the site could be used for shows. Council members asked whether a safe and acceptable solution would be to have monitors assist riders, but Councilman John Greene was concerned that a monitor at the crossing might not do the job properly. “I don’t want our staff to have to monitor the monitor,” Greene said. He made a motion to require PBSO deputies to monitor traffic and help horses cross. The motion passed unanimously. The site owners were given until mid-January to complete the flashing lights. Wellington Supports SR 7 Project — Wellington will lend its support to the Western Communities Council as it pushes for the State Road 7 extension to Northlake Blvd. On Nov. 26, Wellington Village Council members agreed to give Vice Mayor Howard Coates — who chairs the Western Communities Council — the ability to offer Wellington’s support for the extension. Currently, the road needs approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Deputy Village Manager John Bonde noted that other agencies at a federal level can weigh in on the permit, and it is being hindered by environmental concerns. But Bonde said many of those concerns can be mitigated as they are on other roads. Coates noted that the issue is being opposed by West Palm Beach. “West Palm Beach is very aggressively opposing this,” Coates said. “They have expended several hundred thousand dollars at the federal level lobbying against this.”

POLO Polo is a team sport where team spirit is a top priority. Although it is a single player who scores by driving a the ball into the opposing team’s goal, it takes a team of cooperation to get it done. In this year’s Faces of Polo special section, we feature some of the nation’s top polo players in their off-the-field mode. Throughout this series, we can see how the photographer captured the player’s genuine passion for their sport, their team members and their family.

NIC ROLDAN Born in Argentina, Roldan grew up in Wellington and in 1998 became the youngest player in history to win the U.S. Open Polo Championship. Great hand-eye coordination and exceptional accuracy allowed this talented athlete to excel in both golf and hockey before selecting polo as his career path. Roldan has twice represented the United States in international play, and at 8 goals, he is one of America’s top players. 10th Anniversary |wellington the magazine| January 2014

His handicap jumped from 7 goals to 10 goals, proving him to be as talented on offense as he is on defense. A native of Uruguay, Stirling won back-to-back titles in the 2012 and 2013 USPA Gold Cup tournaments. 2014 Shaping Up

To Be A Great Year For

POLO STORY BY LAUREN MIRÓ • PHOTOGRAPHY BY LILA PHOTO

With pounding hooves and roaring crowds, the exciting game of polo returns to the International Polo Club Palm Beach this month, offering the highest level of competition with some of the best players in the world. Last year, IPC celebrated its tenth anniversary season with a banner year, and the momentum hasn’t stopped. This year is set to be as exciting as ever, Club President John Wash said. “Everything was a highlight last year,” he said. “We had the largest number of teams and probably the biggest attendance since the inception of the club.” And 2014 is shaping up to be just as great, with fierce competition and events the whole family can enjoy. “We’re committed to providing the highest level of polo in the United States,” Wash said. “Each Sunday this season is new and exciting. You never know what will happen when you come out Sunday afternoon — which celebrities will stop by or what will happen on the field. But it’s always exciting.” The season kicks off Sunday, Jan. 5 with the Herbie Pennell Cup, and continues through April 20, culminating with the prestigious Maserati U.S. Open Polo Championship Finals.

“All our tournaments are coming back this year,” Wash said. “On opening day, the SuperCar HorsePower Show will be here with some spectacular racecars to kick off Super Car Week.” Also returning this year is Vueve Clicquot’s Fashion on the Field, a popular salute to trendsetters that honors one fashionista each match who stands out during the divot stomp. “The Gardens Mall will be partnering with Vueve Clicquot for it,” Wash said. Wash noted that fans can expect fierce competition as the sport continues to grow. There are 18 teams battling this year for the prestigious cups awarded each week. “We have the same number of teams this year, but we have some new teams,” Wash said. “It’s great to see new people stepping up into the season and joining us.” The competition will be tough, with some of the best players in the world taking the field at IPC this season. “The compe-

tition is always fierce,” Wash said. “This year, we have five of the six 10-goal players in the United States back with us. This is coveted grounds for polo. Players come from all over the world to play here.” If last year’s crowds are any indication, Wash expects to see record numbers of newcomers to the sport taking in a family friendly Sunday afternoon at IPC. “Last year, we sold out our pavilion all 16 weeks,” he said. “The crowds were immense. We continue to see increases in attendance each year. It’s amazing to see people come from all over the world just to be a part of this.” Wash credited this not only to the allure of the sport and the exciting competition that keeps spectators coming back, but also to the club’s efforts to reach out to the community and invite them to come enjoy an afternoon at IPC. “We brought a lot of newcomers to polo last year,” he said. “We’re going to continue to reach out this year and introduce people to the sport.” IPC partnered last year with the U.S. Polo Association, bringing several matches to the NBC Sports Network, where they were broadcast across the world. This year, the Maserati U.S. Open Polo Championship will be broadcast on the main network. “The more people who see the sport and understand it, the bigger we will grow,” Wash said. “We’re looking to introduce people to the sport, and I believe we can keep this momentum growing.” Wash has watched IPC grow from a close-knit community of horse lovers to the premier polo venue in the world. Since then, the club has renovated and added polo fields, built the stunning Grand Pavilion and added many new club amenities. “It’s a very unique club that brings together like-minded people with a love for horses, whether they play polo or are into show jumping or dressage,” he said. Under Wash’s guidance, the club has expanded to offer other events, like the National Field Hockey Festival. His efforts earned him the Palm Beach County Sports Commission’s President’s Award last year. IPC also won the Palm Beach County Convention & Visitors Bureau’s Providencia Award for tourism excellence. This year, the club will accept the Founders Award from Inner City Youth Golfers for IPC’s support of youth sports in Palm Beach County. “We constantly look to see how we can grow and expand,” Wash said. “But at the same time, we stay focused on our business, and that’s polo.” And there’s something for everyone at IPC — whether you want to come out in your Sunday best and enjoy a delicious brunch in the IPC’s Grand Pavilion, tailgate and barbecue with family and friends or join the crowd in the stands to cheer on your team. “It’s really a family event,” Wash said. “Sunday is the only day we charge admission, and it starts at $10 for bleacher seats. You can sit on the lawn stadium bleachers for $20, or you can come out and have a full-service brunch for a whole different experience in the Grand Pavilion.” Amid the champagne and divot stomping, Walsh said it’s

not uncommon to see families tailgaiting or playing games in the kid-friendly Wellington Zone. “It’s truly a family atmosphere,” he said. “It’s an environment everyone can be involved in.” Wash noted that free matches are played four or five days a week. “You can just call our polo hotline to get information about the games, and then come join us,” Wash said. “You can come pull your car up and tailgate.” And you don’t have to know about the game to appreciate it. “My favorite seat is on the lawn bleachers with those horses galloping by at 35 miles per hour,” Wash said. “You can feel the pounding of the hooves and the swinging of the mallets. It’s an exciting game, it’s fast-paced, but it’s an easy game to learn. There are people there to explain the game. Our announcers do a really good job of that.” Wash encouraged the community to come out to the club and see for themselves what a great season 2014 will be. “We’ll have a lot of diverse activities going on and, of course, we’ll be playing some great polo,” he said. International Polo Club Palm Beach Breaks Records In 10TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON The International Polo Club Palm Beach celebrated a recordbreaking 10th anniversary season in 2013. At the close of the 16week, high-goal polo season, all previous years were surpassed, giving the club all the more reason to celebrate. New memberships at the club grew substantially, and food and beverage revenues were at an all-time high. The Grand Pavilion sold out its popular Sunday brunch every weekend, and ticket sales and attendance saw an impressive 63.9 percent increase year over year, attracting new polo fans to the sport. In addition, many groups that were booked by travel agents, meeting planners and organizations enjoyed Sunday polo. It was also an award-winning year for IPC as Club President John Wash was honored by receiving several prestigious accolades from area organizations. In March, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission presented Wash its prestigious President’s Award. In May, during National Tourism Week, IPC received the Palm Beach County Convention

& Visitors Bureau’s coveted Providencia Award for tourism excellence. In June, Wash accepted the Business of the Year award from the Central Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce, and, in December, Inner City Youth Golfers bestowed its distinguished Founders Award on IPC for its support of youth sports in Palm Beach County. Polo plays an important economic role for the western region of the county, generating more than $30 million annually in revenue. The last decade garnered significant achievements for IPC, but club officials are sure that the best is yet to come. ‘Polo Rumble’ Wins IPC’s 2014 Commemorative Poster Contest

South Florida artist Alan Metzger’s entry “Polo Rumble” is the winner of the International Polo Club Palm Beach’s 2014 Commemorative Poster Contest. Creating a custom poster, featuring elite, high-profile polo players to promote the upcoming winter polo season, has been part of the International Polo Club’s strategic marketing plan for the last five years. IPC is a formidable economic generator in the Palm Beaches, with a conservative annual economic impact estimated at over $25 million, particularly in the western region of the county. Malls, shops, restaurants, salons and businesses will proudly display the posters to support the polo season and the large polo industry that settles in the area for five months. “This year, we decided to add an exciting twist to our program and created an artist competition that required artists to submit original artwork that depicted the exciting sport of polo,” IPC President John Wash said. “We received 43 entries, with an impressive diversity and quality of work. It was a difficult decision for our panel of judges, but the unique view of polo at ground level, which conveyed a sense of energy and excitement, coupled with Alan Metzger’s colorful, impressionistic style, won the day.” Artists’ entries came in from near and far, and required no entry fee for submission. As the winning artist, Alan Metzger received a $1,000 cash award, and has the opportunity to display his art at an artists’ reception at IPC, which will be scheduled during the 2014 winter season.

Metzger is a graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh. He has worked in the art and advertising profession most of his life. His work has been recognized for excellence in several art competitions, and he is a recipient of several Addy Awards. Metzger grew up in Pittsburgh and lived in Shreveport, La., for many years before moving to Fort Lauderdale in 1984. He is now a full-time working artist and a leader in promoting artistic growth in South Florida. He is a member of the Broward Art Guild, participates in many gallery exhibitions, and enjoys competing in art competitions. Look for “Polo Rumble” posters throughout Wellington, the western region of Palm Beach County, at chamber offices and at tourism agencies, promoting the polo season, which begins Sunday, Jan. 5 and continues through April 20. POLO FASHION 101

A Girl’s Guide On What To Wear PHOTOGRAPHY BY LILA PHOTO

Once known as the Sport of Kings, polo is now hailed as the sport of fashionistas. Every weekend, stylish, well-coiffed spectators heat up the sidelines with their casual-to-couture wardrobe picks. Elegance and glamour is the name of the game. Ready to be polo inspired? Here are a few Polo Fashion 101 tips to help you get pony-watching perfect for a visit to the International Polo Club Palm Beach. THE HAT. Divot stomping is a long-standing tradition at halftime — and so is the resplendent parade of vibrantcolored sun hats bobbing along the sidelines. From floppy fedoras to bling-encrusted bowlers, the perfect headturning hat should be an education in effortless elegance. For a scene-stealing crown, Melissa Odabash, H&M and Scala are the perfect picks.

THE DRESS. Loom for long, flowing gowns and above-the-knee sheaths that ooze whimsy and glamour. Keep it classy and don’t reveal too much skin. Remember: It’s a polo party, not a pool party. For the extravagant, opt for Badgley Mischka or Oscar de la Renta. For classic, think Isaac Mizrahi and Diane von Furstenberg.

wellington fashion THE DENIM. From curveconforming skinnies to flattering flares, jeans are a cool foundation for a tropical weather look. Pair them with an iconic Hermes belt or colorful silk scarf. For classic faded blue, opt for AG Adriano Goldschmied. For clean white hues, stock up on 7 For All Mankind and Rachel Zoe.

THE KICKS. What you wear on your feet is almost as important as what’s happening on the field. Whether it’s playful platforms, glossy gladiator sandals, snakeskin wedges or romance-inspired riding boots, you must look sharp stomping those divots. Skip the stilettos; they will make you sink into the grass. For scene-stealing steppers, slide into B Brian Atwood, Tory Burch, Gucci or Lucchese.

THE BAG. Keep your hands free for something truly important, like a glass of champagne! One of the season’s sweetest accessories is the clutch. Cute, compact and colorful, there’s a range of chic choices, including classic envelope, petite minaudière or modern cross-body. For a little razzle, opt for Hunting Season, or Edie Parker for major dazzle.

THE ACCESSORY. Get the best view of the players and their ponies with a pair of vogue sunnies. Choose from mirrored aviators to oversized cheetahs in a treasure trove of retro finishes, floral embellishments and colorful tints. Steal the sun’s spotlight with cool specs by Ray-Ban, Miu Miu or Karen Walker.

Coming Off A Big

Win In Argentina, POLO Star Sebastian Merlos Eyes The U.S. Open Trophy

By Lauren Miró

From the polo fields of Argentina to the International Polo Club Palm Beach, Sebastian Merlos has dominated the sport as a one of the highest-rated players in the world, taking home some of the most coveted polo championships. Coming off a win at the 2013 Argentine Open with La Dolfina, Merlos will lend his talents to team Coca-Cola this year at IPC in Wellington, as the team eyes the 2014 Maserati U.S. Open Polo Championship. Currently rated at 9 goals, Merlos learned the love of polo from his family. He grew up on his father’s farm in Trenque Lauquen, Argentina, where he learned to play polo from the best. “I was raised with a horse between my legs,” Merlos smiled. “My grandfather was the one who started

our family in polo. I never had any doubt that my life was going to be about horses and polo.” His father, Cacho Merlos, is a legendary polo player who won the Argentine Triple Crown — the Tortugas Open, the Hurlingham Open and the Argentine Open — in 1973, and was a dominant force on the field until 2008, when he retired to coach. Sebastian has also played alongside his two brothers, Pite and Agustin, winning his first U.S. Open in 1990 with Pite at his side. “I’ve been very lucky to be able to play with my

10th Anniversary |wellington the magazine| January 2014

79

brothers,” Merlos said. “With Pite, I won the U.S. Open, the Queens Cup and the Argentine Open. Playing with him is easy.” In the last several years, he has played with his younger brother, Agustin. “We played in England and in the Argentine Open,” Merlos said. “It’s always good to play with a brother. You’ve been playing together so long that you know what the other one is thinking.” All three brothers have achieved the coveted 10-goal rating in the United States. Merlos was rated at 10 goals for the first time in 1993 and has held the handicap on-and-off since. Merlos has won several prestigious matches, and many of them more than once — including the Argentine Open, the Hurlingham Open, the U.S. Open and the British Open. He has achieved this success by playing to win every match, whether it’s the finals of the U.S. Open or a match without as much on the line. “When you get out on the field, you play to win,”

80

January 2014 |wellington the magazine| 10th Anniversary

Merlos said. “It always feels nice to win. It doesn’t matter what tournament or game it is.” But winning the Argentine Open has been the highlight of his career. “It’s really the top of any tournament for me,” he said. Last month, Merlos helped La Dolfina claim the 2013 Argentine Open crown. La Dolfina defeated Alegria 1611 for the win. Merlos joined the team after player Juan Martín Nero was forced to sit out because of an injury. “It feels great,” Merlos said of the win. “It was a shame Martín Nero couldn’t play after an injury in the semifinals, but I am honored they chose me as a substitute. It was very important for me to play well, and it went very well. La Dolfina won the Triple Crown, and I’m glad I was able to help.” Now, his focus has shifted to Wellington, where he will compete with team Coca-Cola for a spot in the U.S. Open.

“I’m excited for this season in Wellington,” he said. “The teams are all very good. The level of teams has been increasing every year, and 70 percent of team Coca-Cola is returning this year, so I’m looking forward to starting play. Last year we made it to the semifinals of the U.S. Open, so I hope this year we’ll be in the finals.” This year Merlos will once again be playing on a string of ponies he bred and trained himself. “I really love horses,” he said. “The last few years I have been able to play my mares’ mothers and fathers. I’ve been lucky to have very good results. In the Argentine Open, 99 percent of the ponies I played were my own. Most of the horses I’ll play in [Wellington] will be mine.” Though he has earned most of the sport’s top honors, Merlos doesn’t have any plans to stop playing. “I competed in my first tournament when I was eight, and I plan to do this until I can’t anymore,” he said.

Grand Champions Polo Club Teams Up With Palm Beach Polo For New League By Sharon Robb

After its most successful fall season in the club’s eight-year history, Grand Champions Polo Club is gearing up for a spectacular winter season. While its pro teams Audi (captained by Marc Ganzi) and Flight Options (led by Melissa Ganzi) prepare for the 20goal season at the International Polo Club Palm Beach, Grand Champions Polo Club, in concert with Palm Beach Polo, will feature a new medium-goal winter season to promote polo and develop players at every level. Grand Champions has partnered with Palm Beach Polo as part of the club’s initiative to enable polo enthusiasts to enjoy the sport with family and friends in a relaxed atmosphere. The new league — called “Grand Champions Polo Club @ PB Polo” —

will start play in January and continue until April. Nine well-manicured polo fields throughout Wellington, along with a newly constructed large venue for arena polo, will be used for games, tournaments, clinics and lessons for men, women and children. “The idea is to continue to host medium-goal and low-goal with significant enhancements to the customers’ benefits,” said Palm Beach Polo Manager Juan Olivera, who hosted 35 teams in various tournaments and leagues last season at Palm Beach Polo. “Now, with Grand Champions as the

lead partner, we are going to upgrade the menu of polo options,” Olivera said. “It’s the old Palm Beach Polo Club going to Grand Champions, two powerful brands with a new concept of polo. We are keeping the same prices, leagues and format that we used to have.” The club will host not only players from Wellington and across the U.S., but also has the capability to host teams and patrons from around the world. Grand Champions will also provide horses for visiting patrons and players of all levels. Players need only to pack their boots, knee guards and helmet, and they can play to their heart’s desire. 10th Anniversary |wellington the magazine| January 2014

Players can hire their own pros and organize their teams as in the past, or the club can put together a team for them. Beginning the first week of January and continuing through April, there will be arena polo, a Saturday Margarita League for people just starting out who have one or two horses, 0-5 goal league, 8-goal and 12-goal leagues, and two 16-goal tournaments in March. Also in March, the club will host the $50,000 National 12Goal Championship, an exciting single-elimination tournament capped at 16 teams and sponsored by Audi. The tournaments will be sanctioned by the United States Polo Association, the sport’s governing body, and teams will compete for several historic polo cups that have been Palm Beach Polo traditions. The arena polo will give people the opportunity for beginners to take lessons and have fun with family and friends at Friday Night Polo. Practice sessions will be offered on Wednesdays for every level of player and allow the opportunity to practice with highgoal players from Grand Champions’ elite lineup of pro players, including Argentine 9-goaler Miguel Astrada, 8-goaler Nic Roldan, Juan Bollini, Kris Kampsen and Brandon Phillips. “This is something unique, especially when you pay a fee to play practices in the low-goal and medium-goal polo,” Olivera said. “Players have the chance to practice with the high-

goal players who compete in the U.S. Open. It’s like a fantasy camp. It’s quite an interesting idea by the Ganzis to bring everybody here together as one club. I love the concept. The idea is to make polo accessible to everyone. There is something for everyone, and it’s all super-affordable.” Audi is one of 15 teams competing in IPC’s 20-goal season in the Herbie Pennell, Joe Barry, Ylvisaker and Iglehart tournaments. Audi will have its same lineup of Marc Ganzi, rated at 1-goal and ranked 49th in the world overall, 3-goaler Carlitos Gracida, and 8-goalers Nico Pieres and Nic Roldan. Flight Options, a private jet company, is a new sponsor to polo this season, with team captain Melissa Ganzi, 5-goaler Juan Bollini, 9-goaler Miguel Astrada and 6-goaler Freddie Mannix, a newcomer to the team this season. Grant Ganzi, a sophomore at St. Andrew’s School following in the polo footsteps of his parents, will be team captain for Casablanca when it plays in the Iglehart Cup with 5-goaler Lucas Lalor, 7-goaler Jeff Hall and 8-goaler Nic Roldan. Ganzi is coming off an outstanding season that featured a national youth polo title and three medium goal tournament wins. Grand Champions Polo Club is located at 13444 Southfields Road in Wellington. For more information, call (561) 644-5050 or visit www.grandchampionspoloclub.org. Florida’s Oldest Polo For 91st Season

Club Ready

Story by Chris Felker • Photo by Catherine Zachariadis

Known as Florida’s oldest polo club, the Gulfstream Polo Club in suburban Lake Worth is stepping off into its 91st season of competitions with the South Florida January 4-Goal League, underway Jan. 4-25. The January 6-Goal League begins play Jan. 10 and runs through Jan. 31, while the Haas/Windswept January 10-Goal League starts Jan. 12 and continues through Feb. 2. “We have changed our schedule a little bit for our 91st season,” club spokeswoman Marla Connor said. “Our regular leagues are 4-goal, 6-goal and 10-goal, as opposed to 4, 6 and 12 last year. This year, we also highlight the United States Polo Association Bronze Trophy 12-goal and the USPA Delegates Cup 8-goal tournaments. They will be at the end of the season, in late March and early April.” Gulfstream’s long history began in 1923, when the legendary Phipps family joined with other polo enthusiasts from northern climes and established their own winter club in the tiny community of Gulf Stream, just north of Delray Beach. The following year, they began playing on two polo fields along the Intracoastal Waterway. In 1965, when the Phipps family decided to sell those polo grounds, Philip Iglehart spearheaded the search for a new location. He and 11 others purchased a 640-acre, undeveloped tract of land where the club now sits, and in 1966, the first polo match was played on Gulfstream Polo Club’s new fields off Lake Worth Road. Under Iglehart’s guidance, the club’s roster grew from fewer than 20 members to more than 80. Many barns and homes were built in the following years when parts of the original acreage were sold for development, and today, 25 privately owned properties surround the club’s central 100 acres. Combined with the club’s three barns, there is stabling for 600 horses. For decades, the club has prospered, with as many as a dozen teams competing in the 8- and 12-goal leagues every

winter. The USPA Delegates Cup 8 Goal was awarded to the club in the mid-1970s, and the USPA Bronze Trophy 12 Goal was added in the early 1980s. Loyal, repeat customers keep Gulfstream Polo thriving year after year. “Right now I have about 18 teams,” Connor said. “As you know, Florida is the winter polo capital of the world. I have a lot of return customers because our club, unlike the other clubs, is the only place where you can work regularly, ride on the working track and practice — we’re the only club that practices — and compete and stable, all in the same location.” Gulfstream’s relaxed atmosphere and tradition live on. The grounds feature seven polo fields and two stick-and-ball fields. Spectators are always welcome, and there is no admission charge. All tournament fields have grandstand seating. Tailgating is encouraged, and large groups are welcome. “I can see every field from my office,” Connor said. “So that is what’s unique and different about us. When people discover that we are an old-fashioned club where you can do all of that in one location, my customers love it and they return year after year.” In the off season, the fields are available for multipurpose events. Once again this year, the Polo & Balloon Festival will take place during the U.S. Open, and the club hosts Ultimate Frisbee and the South Florida Lacrosse Tournament during the warmer months. Gulfstream Polo is located at 4550 Polo Road in suburban Lake Worth, off Lake Worth Road, just west of Florida’s Turnpike. Cover Photographer

MARK CRISLIP

Brings Unique Passion For Polo The cover photo of this month’s issue is a remarkable image capturing the majesty and grace of a Thoroughbred polo pony in sync with 9-goal player Sebastian Merlos, masterfully swinging his mallet in heated competition. The photo was taken during the Maserati 109th U.S. Open Polo Championship quarterfinals, when Coca-Cola defeated Lechuza Caracas 11-10, advancing to the semifinal match against Valiente. The angle and intensity of the shot conveys the power of the sport, giving the feeling that polo is larger than life. Photographer Mark Crislip has a real passion for polo. He is not only a student of the game, but is also an accomplished player. An experienced sports photographer, as well as a painter and graphic artist, Crislip moved to Argentina to be able to play and learn with some of the world’s best players. He also keeps a home in West Palm Beach and can be found in and around Wellington during the winter high-goal season at the International Polo Club Palm Beach. Crislip is a student of the game, and photographing the sport has always come second to playing. If you want to talk about the game, strategy or trade stories of injuries on the pitch, he can more than keep up. Official photographer of La Dolfina, Crislip’s unique experiences as an artist and a player have given his photos a distinctive style like none other, drawing clients from all over the world. His paintings have been featured in galleries in the exclusive Georgetown district of Washington, D.C., hanging alongside artists like Warhol, Lichtenstein and Rauschenberg. Collectors include individuals from 10 countries and include prominent members of the press, political and entertainment industries.

Wellington Equestrian Group Brightens Christmas Season For Caridad Families By Lauren Miró

Determined to make sure needy families have a bright and happy holiday, the Wellington Equestrian Group once again hosted the Caridad Center Christmas Party at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center on Saturday, Dec. 14. The event highlights the generosity of Wellington’s equestrian community, as equestrians from near and far reached out to provide Christmas cheer for more than 120 families served by the Caridad Center, a free health clinic that works with needy people in Palm Beach County. “The enthusiasm from the equestrian community has been wonderful,” Chairwoman Caroline Moran said. “They’ve really embraced this event.” Members of the Wellington Equestrian Group have been helping needy families for more than 25 years. Event founders B.J. Meeks and Pablo Perez launched the initiative after seeing so many families in need. “We had been shopping for a friend of ours and couldn’t find anything we thought was appropriate,” Meeks said. “On our way up Boynton Beach Blvd., we passed a party at [a] soup kitchen with a lot of

children running around. I said, ‘This is where our money should be going.’” Event co-chairs Moran, Bruce Duchossois and Nancy Hooker became involved over the years and, in 2009, they began partnering with the Caridad Center. “In order for families to come, they must have been a patient at Caridad,” Moran explained. “To be a patient, they must be below the poverty line.” With smiles on their faces and bags full of toys, many children received what will be their only Christmas presents. The event, held in the equestrian center’s International Tent, was a day filled with fun for the families, complete with a DJ, magician, face painters, a visit from Santa Claus, food provided by PDQ and Cilantro and, of course, presents. “Each child gets a Christmas stocking filled with candy,” Hooker said. “They go home with presents,

and every family gets Publix gift cards for a nice Christmas dinner. They also leave with the centerpieces off the table and a raffle item.” The venue is donated by Equestrian Sport Productions, and this year BikeStreet USA donated 100 bikes and helmets for the children. “When families register, they give us a wish list,” Moran explained. “A lot of kids ask for bikes.” The remainder of the wish list items are purchased by donors or with funds donated by the community. “A few years ago I asked one of the people [from Caridad] why the children weren’t opening their presents,” Meeks recalled. “She told me it’s the only Christmas some of them will have, so they were saving the presents to open on Christmas morning. I just hadn’t thought about that. We take so much for granted.” But the equestrian community has stepped up in a big way, donating items off each family’s wish lists and rallying others to the cause. The donors are both permanent and seasonal residents, and come from all types of riding disciplines and levels of competition. “We hear from people all over the country,” Hooker said. “I have people call and tell me they want to adopt a family or 10 families. Even the seasonal residents who aren’t here yet will order things and send them to us.” Duchossois noted that a new generation of equestrians have also taken interest, pointing out that many children and teens have begun to get involved.

“The local community is just overwhelmed that the horse people are giving back in such a big way,” he said. “It’s so great to see so many of the next generation help. A lot of these kids come from wealth and privilege and don’t realize there are kids out there who don’t live the life they do. Some of them have even donated their own Christmas presents.” Moran said it’s not just the horse community who have gotten involved. More than 75 volunteers show up each year to hand out presents and serve food. “We have a group from Wellington High School who started volunteering with us in 2009,” she said. “They’re all in college now, but they come back and help every year.” Perez noted that the Wellington Equestrian Group helps Caridad Center families year-round, not just during the holidays. “We hand out backpacks filled with school supplies, supply school uniforms and also give scholarships for college and for summer camps,” he said. Moran said the group tries to raise $100,000 each year to help the families. “All of the money goes directly to those causes,” she said. Moran said she was grateful to everyone who made this year’s event — and all the years past — a success. “There’s no way for us to thank everyone who has helped us enough,” she said. “This community has been amazing in gathering together to support this event.” For more information, or to get involved, e-mail Moran at goshenhill@aol.com.

Equestrian architect John Blackburn with an illustration that explains why his unique stable design keeps horses healthier and safer.

Award-Winning Architect John Blackburn Puts Focus On Health & Safety Of Horses By Carrie Wirth and Beth Herman

John Blackburn has spent the past 30 years designing more than 160 horse farms that highlight his unique aesthetic and talent for creating beautiful, functional and sustainable equestrian architecture. His clients have built facilities for racing, polo, hunter/jumpers and Quarter Horses in a variety of climates and evolving site conditions, while his designs have been featured in dozens of equestrian, architectural and luxury lifestyle publications. Blackburn’s approach to equestrian architecture concentrates on the health and safety of the horse. His designs combine the concepts of aerodynamic ventilation, strategic natural light and passive solar heating and cooling to create horse barns ranging from exquisite to functional. “No one would think twice about building a house that brought comfort and protection for its human inhabitants, so why should horses be any different?” Blackburn asked. “Our primary concern should

be the animal’s health and appropriate conditions, which can be compounded when two or more are stabled together.” When designing and building a barn, Blackburn considers natural light and ventilation the two most important elements. “My barns are designed to function throughout the day without the use of artificial lighting, except in enclosed rooms such as a bathroom or laundry,” Blackburn said. “This simple approach can greatly reduce the risk of fatal barn fires.” Blackburn barns feature vented skylights glazed with a translucent polycarbonate panel running the length of the barn. The light source provides a low-cost, shatterproof feature that diffuses the light,

eliminating harsh shadows, which could cause horses to spook. Natural light also reduces the dark, damp areas at the floor of the stall where odors are created. The airflow from vertical ventilation rids the barn of odors, pathogens and infectious bacteria that could otherwise be transmitted from horse to horse. When siting a location, Blackburn checks the prevailing wind data to create a design that works with the forces of nature. “Ventilation is one of the most important considerations when designing a barn that is healthy for your animals,” Blackburn said. “It is essential in every barn, regardless of whether it is located in a hot or cold climate. And, luckily, good ventilation does not require purchasing expensive equipment or running energy-guzzling systems.” The secret, he said, is good vertical ventilation. Mechanical

systems, in the form of exhaust fans, are not only expensive to maintain and run, but they also can put the safety of the horses at risk. Mechanical systems present a fire hazard, and pose a danger in the way traditional systems ventilate by drawing air laterally across the barn. This horizontal flow increases the risk of passing pathogens and unhealthy gases among the animals. “Natural ventilation, specifically vertical ventilation, is the most important design consideration,” Blackburn said. “We design the barn to be a natural machine, not just a static structure, by using the Bernoulli principle and the chimney effect. We place the barn perpendicular to the prevailing breeze in order to take the most advantage of the site. By angling and venting the roof, we create the contact of low and high pressure on either side of the roof. The reduced pressure on the leeward side of the roof, similar to the low pressure created by the shape of an airplane wing, pulls the air out of the barn.”

This natural ventilation is augmented by a chimney effect created by the slope of the roof. Heat through the roof tends to rise before it radiates downward onto the horses. The heat from the horses, along with the heat from the skylight, creates a significant temperature difference between the ridge of the roof and the floor of the barn, both adding to the chimney effect. This upward, vertical ventilation reduces the risk of disease for horses by minimizing the amount of damp, stale, contaminated air in the barn. The airflow within a well-designed barn is strong enough to ventilate the interior, even on a hot and humid Florida day. Natural ventilation is also improved by Dutch doors at each stall and screened venting along the underside of the eaves of the roof. The air from inside the barn is vented out through the triangular louvered roof vents and the continuous vent along the base of the ridge skylight and the ridge of the skylight itself. “We like to say that in every project there are three things: the site, the owner and the horse,” Blackburn said. “While the first two may change, care and concern for the animal never does. That’s the common thread that runs through all our work.” Recently, Blackburn has been traveling the country on a well-attended book tour, and visiting many of the farms featured in his book, Healthy Stables by Design. He also sat for signing events at the Washington International Horse Show and the Alltech National Horse Show and was a featured author at the National Press Club Book Fair. Blackburn donates all his author proceeds to various equine charities. “Horses have given me so much, and now it is time for me to give back to horses,” he said. Blackburn is planning a Healthy Stables by Design signing event in Wellington during the 2014 season. For more information, visit www.healthy stablesbydesign.com.

Jim Dratfield, the nation’s leading photographic artist of people’s pets, has captured celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Barbara Walters and Elton John with their animal companions, as well as many not-so-famous animal lovers. They all share one common passion — a deep love for their pets. Dratfield is based in Wellington this winter. His company, Petography, has a booth at the FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival. He is available to schedule photo shoots at the home or barn of any horse or pet owner wishing to capture lasting memories of their beloved animals. “I believe that many things touch us throughout our lives, but it’s often our pets who mean most to us. They are always there for us both in good times and in bad,” Dratfield said. “The response to the finished pictures I take is probably the most rewarding aspect of what I do. People are delighted when they see their pets captured exactly as they know them, and sometimes they are overwhelmed to the point that they even shed a tear or two.” Dratfield has a unique ability to capture the true personality of any animal in a variety of settings and poses. His signature style is sepia-toned prints, which lend a rare and timeless quality to his photographs. He also 100

produces color photos and black-and-white imagery as well. Dratfield has gained national fame through his many books, such as Underdogs: Beauty is More Than Fur Deep and a photo celebration of horses released with The Quotable Equine. He has also achieved notoriety through his appearances on such television programs as Access Hollywood, ABC’s 20/20 and The View, on CNN, and in publications such as Town & Country, USA Today, The New York Times and The Oprah Magazine. “I consider myself truly fortunate to be able to share people’s special relationships with their pets,” he said. “The bond between people and their pets — whether it’s their horses, dogs, cats or any other pet they may have — can be incredibly strong. When they entrust me with the responsibility of capturing their pets on film just the way they see them, well, that’s a role I take very seriously, and it’s something I consider a privilege.” A photo shoot with Dratfield is a great way to preserve your special relationship with a pet and is also the perfect gift for someone you love. Contact Petography today (800) 738-6472 or jim@petography.com to schedule a photo shoot at your home or barn. Leading Trainers And Competitors

See Benefits Of Equine Surveillance Systems By Carrie Wirth

Surveillance has become a growing consideration as trainers, competitors and owners from around the world plan their busy 2014 Wellington show jumping, dressage and polo seasons. One innovative company has answered the needs of equestrians on the move by creating a portable surveillance system especially for equine competition and racing. The StallWatch video surveillance service provides remote viewing and recording of horses in their stalls at the show, competition or the home barn. One of the best features of the service is that users can monitor their horses from their smartphones, tablets and laptops wherever they are and whenever it’s convenient. To many equestrians, this translates into peace of mind. There are many safety and security advantages to surveillance of much-valued competition horses, plus the digital recording feature means the user may review the footage to be certain the horses are safe and happy in their stalls. The implications for improving care, safety and security are exponential. One night last season, Morgan Thomas of Norgan Inc. checked in on his horses remotely from his smartphone and saw that one was in trouble. The horse

was cast in his stall, a situation that can potentially lead to injury. “I could see exactly what happened the moment it happened, and I had people down there in five minutes,” Thomas recalled. Ivan Rakowsky, former chef d’equipe for the Mexican show jumping team and a well-respected trainer, uses the surveillance system as an integral component of running his busy operation, and it paid off. Last year at a major horse show, Rakowsky’s car was broken into where it was parked beside his stalls. His wallet, all his credit cards, some checks and cash were stolen. “I was able to go back to the StallWatch footage and identify the person who did it,” Rakowsky said. “I submitted that video to the authorities. They were able to identify the guy and eventually catch him.” The portable service uses networkenabled wireless cameras to provide customers with round-the-clock viewing and recording from their personal computers and mobile devices through a 3G cellular connection. Many trainers and owners see the value in adding surveillance to their barns’ services. Customers of the equine surveillance company include McLain Ward, Margie Engle, Starnes Quarter

Horses, Heeley Pleasure Horses, Griggs Quarter Horses, top reiner Josh Lyons, Michael Matz, Shug McGaughey and organizations such as the Kentucky Racing Commission and the New York Racing Association. Trainer and judge Diane Carney of Telluride Farm added StallWatch to her barn’s services last spring. “The 24/7 view of my horses, my customers’ horses and equipment is important,” she explained. “It is a great addition to the great care Telluride provides.” Darla Duncan of StallWatch invites other members of the equestrian industry to try the service. “You can be anywhere and see it, and the cameras can be picked up and moved anywhere,” she said. “And it’s affordable — it’s not just for AA circuit, cream-of-the-crop riders. There’s nothing like your own eyes on an animal you know well.” Another added bonus is that some equine insurance providers offer premium discounts for the use of a surveillance system. “This is such an important product because our horses are our most important asset,” top rider Debbie Stephens said. “I can’t say enough good things about it.” For additional information, visit www. stallwatch.com. 10th Anniversary |wellington the magazine| January 2014 101

care, meaning clients can get all their beauty needs done in the expert hands of the salon staff. “The spa is an additional amenity to clients,” Soriero said. “They can come in for a cut and color and then get their nails done. It’s convenient. They don’t have to go somewhere else.” The salon also offers permanent makeup or makeovers in the Luka Cosmetics makeup studio. “You can come in and have your hair and nails done, get your makeup done, and then you’re out the door ready for your day or evening,” Soriero said. “Or you can come and relax. We have a massage therapist and the spa.” The spa offers facials with Image and PCA Skin Care products, as well as massages, needling and laser hair removal, manicures and pedicures. Another popular service is eyebrow care, provided by esthetician Armineh Gharakhani. “She’s the eyebrow queen,” Murray said. “She has been in the community for more than 25 years. Dr. Paul Wollenman Has Made A Career Of Treating Wellington’s Polo Ponies Story by Ron Bukley  Photo by Abner Pedraza

Keeping horses healthy in the South Florida climate requires special attention, said veterinarian Dr. Paul Wollenman, founder of Palm Beach Equine Clinic, set in the midst of Wellington’s thriving equestrian area. “When I first came to Florida in 1975, there weren’t a lot of high-quality horses in the area,” he recalled. “There were some good racehorses down at Gulfstream, Hialeah, Pompano, but the horse business in West Palm Beach was not dynamic.” Wollenman moved to Florida from Fort Worth, Texas, where he grew up and planned to practice. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1972 and began to practice in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. One of the practices he worked with did work for the Lion Country Safari location near Grand Prairie, Texas. One of the managers asked him whether he’d be interested in working at Lion Country Safari’s Florida location. The idea intrigued him, but Wollenman was not interested in working there full-time. “I was not interested in doing exotics for a living. I’m a horse veterinarian, but I enjoy wildlife,” he said. “I looked at the West Palm Beach situation, and I said I’ll work there two or three days a week, but I wanted to start a practice here. At that time, in Palm Beach County, there were probably two other veterinarians doing horse work, and this is a big county.” At the time, what is now Wellington was known more for cattle than horses. He started his practice in Homeland treating racehorses. “Somebody came along in about 1977 and said, ‘Hey, listen, there’s a guy from Chicago, Bill Ylvisaker, and he’s going to start a polo-centered housing development,” Wollenman recalled. “This kind of landed on top of me, and I got very interested in polo.” Wollenman happened to be in the area when polo arrived, followed by the horse shows several years later. Although Wollenman primarily works with polo ponies,

Palm Beach Equine Clinic has a large staff of veterinarians treating a full range of horses and horse ailments. “This is a large practice,” he said. “We have 18 to 20 veterinarians here. Some veterinarians do nothing but show horse work, and others do nothing but dressage. Some do nothing but surgery, and some do acupuncture… Every sport has its particular issues.” Although South Florida is a climate destination for people, it is not ideal for horses. “Horses would never come to South Florida to live in the wild,” Wollenman said. “The grass quality is not so good, it’s humid and the insects are terrible. The humidity makes it tough for horses to dissipate heat.” Wollenman is thankful for how the practice has grown through the years. “I’ve taken on multiple partners, and everyone excels in something,” he said. “The key to this business is the doctors we employ. Every year, we’re trying to find the cream of the crop.” Wollenman now spends the summers in northern Wyoming, where he is active in a polo club with many of his Wellington clients and polo friends. “It’s a great place to spend the summers, in the foothills of the Big Horn Mountains with beautiful scenery and beautiful climate,” he said. “I raised two kids who are now off to college, and my wife is up there now, so I kind of commute back and forth. I’m here in Florida six months of the year and in Wyoming six months of the year. It works out great.” Palm Beach Equine Clinic is located at 13125 Southfields Road in Wellington. Engel & Völkers’ Amy Carr Brings Decades Of Equestrian Experience To Her Clients Story by Matthew Auerbach  Photo by Abner Pedraza

For Amy Carr of Engel & Völkers, her South Florida real estate career is a direct result of her love of horses. “I started traveling to Florida in the mid-1970s, back when I was involved with the horse show circuit,” she recalled. “I’ve been involved in the horse community of Florida and Wellington since before there really was a place for us. I’ve had the opportunity to watch the equestrian community of Wellington grow, from the very beginning with each new development, new location, new facilities. In 1985, I got married and decided to make Wellington my permanent residence, and I’ve been here ever since.” Carr began her real estate career in 1990 because many of the people she knew were buying property in the area and asking her about the community, schools and neighborhoods. “It was a natural transition into utilizing my knowledge of the area and contacts to build a career,” she explained. Carr, who specializes in residential and equestrian properties, began at Palm Beach Polo Realty. She remained there for a number of years before deciding to start her own firm, Westwind Realty. In the fall of 2012, she received an offer she couldn’t refuse. “Engel & Völkers approached me with the opportunity to open a shop here in Wellington,” Carr said. “They were quite persistent and nice, so I agreed to meet with them. In that meeting, I learned all about the company, and it sounded like an exciting opportunity. In that meeting, I made the decision to partner up with Carol A. Sollak, with whom I had worked for years. Partnering with Carol to open this shop has worked out beautifully. Putting our individual strengths together has

led to a great business opportunity that is working out very well for us and our advisors.” Being a part of an internationally successful organization such as Engel & Völkers allows Carr to perform her job at the highest level locally. “The company utilizes all of the latest technology available to help us sell our client’s properties and find others their dream home,” she said. “Our style of service is Europeanbased and originally dedicated to a very top-tier level of clientele. Our services are available to everyone, but we’ve maintained our original commitment to service quality, which has been the driving force behind our success globally. We offer a unique approach to real estate in the United States, which is a partnership between exceptional real estate agents in the markets and our highly respected, international brand.” Carr sees a bright future for the real estate market in Wellington and believes the needs of those who are eyeing the community as a potential destination will be met quite successfully. “The market in Wellington for residential and equestrian properties is definitely picking up. It is the strongest that it has been for a few years now,” she said. “We’re quite excited going into season and feel that it’s going to be a great time for buyers and sellers alike.” For more information, call Carr at (561) 791-2220 or e-mail amy. carr@evusa.com. HORACE REEVES

Wellington Maintenance Man Brightens Up Lives With A Wave And A Smile By Deborah Welky

When Horace Reeves was growing up in Jamaica, his mother taught him how to be friendly and polite. “Mama always said, whenever you meet someone in the road, always speak to them,” recalled Reeves, a maintenance worker for the Village of Wellington. The advice stuck with him. Today, Reeves is known throughout Wellington as the “smiling, friendly guy in the golf cart.” Technically, of course, his job requires a bit more than waving and saying “hello.” He is one of two workers assigned to keep Wellington’s streets and swales clean and free of debris, put up and take down informational signs and do other maintenance work. However, he spends nearly 40 hours a week on patrol in his golf cart, scanning village byways for errant scraps of paper, fluttering plastic bags or thoughtlessly discarded soda cans. Reeves came to the United States nearly 30 years ago, alone but determined to earn a good living. “I wanted to take care of my family — to take care of my mama and the rest of my family,” he recalled. He signed on with Wellington 19 years ago,

in 1994, and has been smiling and waving ever since. Today, Reeves is no longer alone. In fact, he has family everywhere. “I was born and raised in Jamaica, but I have family everywhere really — New York, Indiana, Canada, England, everywhere,” Reeves said. Now happily married to Ilene, the couple has six grown children — four live in West Palm Beach, one in Indiana and one in Connecticut. He said he always tried to teach his children two things — to respect their parents and to get themselves a good education. “I told them it was important that they respect their parents. And I told them to try to make it to college. I told them I wanted their mama to be proud of them,” Reeves laughed. “And I wanted the best for them in life.” Reeves also shares his words of wisdom with those he meets around town. He gets to know those along his “route,” gets to know a bit of their history and shares tidbits of advice. “Some of these people ride around just to see me on the road!” he exclaimed.

wellington hero If there is a downside to his job, it’s the weather. Reeves works through any weather Wellington’s tricky climate can throw at him, often cleaning out the storm drains during and immediately after really wet weather. However, he only fears the lightning. “I really don’t like that part,” he said. Thankfully, Wellington’s is usually golf cart comfortable, and Reeves enjoys every minute of it. “My favorite part is when I drive by and greet someone,” he said. “You’re passing them and you’re spreading love. You get their respect. It’s up to you. When you smile at them and then they smile back, that is my favorite part.” Being acknowledged in such a personal way also gives Reeves a feeling of immediate gratification — and a sense of accomplishment. “Many people appreciate what I am doing and what I have done for them, so I have to keep it up,” he laughed. “I’ve got to keep meeting them and greeting them or they’ll worry that something happened to me. I have to carry on. If not, people won’t be happy. Whatever time I’m sad, they are sad about me. Whatever time they are happy, I am happy.” When we think about heroes, we tend to forget those everyday heroes, the ones who just give an honest wave and a sincere smile. Those small, friendly gestures can take someone who might otherwise be without interaction on a personal level that day and make them feel like the center of the universe. That is the mission of Wellington’s Horace Reeves. This year, our Wellington Hero series will focus on individuals who make the world a better place through their actions. Kitchen: The home’s pristine custom-designed kitchen embodies Laurie’s rustic style, with its metal backsplash, appliances and pendant lights that beautifully contrast the white cabinets and marble floors to give the space an industrial feel. The kitchen is spacious with a bright, inviting atmosphere. “We spend a lot of time around that island,” Timmy said.

Dining Room: The formal dining room is stunning, with beautiful hardwood floors and tray ceilings that give the space an elegant feel. The room is a wonderful, bright gold with a large window that lets in plenty of natural light. The decoration has an equestrian flair, a nod to the family’s hobby.

Office: Timmy’s office is located just off the main living space, meaning he doesn’t have to hide away while working. “My office actually doubles as a place where we hang out as a family,” he said. “There’s no door, so I can still be involved in what’s going on.” The office is filled with deep, rich colors from the hardwood floors to the walls. The focal point of the room is the fireplace, which stands out and provides a pop of contrast.

Family Room: Located in the heart of the home, the family room is spacious and bright with soaring ceilings that open to the second-floor loft and big sliding-glass doors that look out over the patio and barns. It is elegant, yet comfortable. “This is where we spend the majority of our time,” Laurie said of her favorite room. “I love the coloring. It’s a relaxing tone.” The couple has personalized the space with black-and-white portraits of their family for a beautiful custom art installation.

Southfields Home Brings Out The Unique Esthetic Of The Sharma Family Story by Lauren Miró Photos by Abner Pedraza

Timmy and Laurie Sharma have made a stunning, comfortable custom-designed home for themselves and their daughter, ParisElla, tucked away in Wellington’s Southfields community. The two-story, six-bedroom, four-and-a-half-bath home is located on two-and-a-half acres with a barn and a riding arena. The couple chose the home because of its location, close to the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center and the Grand Champions Polo Club. In 2010, shortly after moving in, the couple redesigned the home to make it uniquely their own. “It’s eclectic,” Timmy said. “It covers a lot of our different tastes.” Laurie was drawn to the look of rustic elegance, and elements of the style can be seen throughout the home. “We loved the tones and the colors of the style,” Laurie said. The home also has an Indian influence, a nod to Timmy’s heritage. “We wanted it to be something very livable and not something that is barely used,” Timmy said.

The master bedroom is an eclectic mix of Indianinspired décor with its bright colors, offset by classic, dark tones. “Every time we go to India, I look for something to add,” Laurie said. The focal point of the room is the couple’s four-poster bed, which anchors the space. The room opens up to a beautiful balcony, which allows for plenty of natural light.

ParisElla’s bedroom is the perfect space for a young girl — comfortable and stylish. The walls are a soft yellow, and there are accents of pink throughout the space. “My favorite colors,” ParisElla noted. The bed is central to the room, and a large canopy provides a focal point on the wall. The room is connected to ParisElla’s Indian-inspired playroom through a bathroom. The playroom is bright and fun, with bold colors and comfortable furniture that make it the perfect space to store her toys.

Great-Tasting Food With Impeccable Customer Service At PDQ Restaurant In Wellington Story by Lauren Miró

Photos by Abner Pedraza

Redefining the idea of fast-casual dining, PDQ is giving customers great tasting and healthier food choices with impeccable customer service and a unique experience. Located on State Road 7 just south of the Mall at Wellington Green, PDQ (People Dedicated to Quality) is known for its fresh, handbreaded chicken tenders, but also offers a variety of items sure to make your mouth water. CEO of Palm Beach PDQ Tim Gannon brought the restaurant to Wellington. A longtime Wellington resident, Gannon is a cofounder of Outback Steakhouse and high-goal polo player who champions the Outback Polo team. “This is an important restaurant to me,” Gannon said of the new Wellington location. “My passion has been polo. I spent 20 years in high-goal polo, and this is a way for me to reconnect with everyone.” PDQ was founded in 2011 by former Outback Steakhouse co-founder Bob Basham and MVP Holdings CEO Nick Reader. The chain first opened in the Tampa area and has since expanded in Florida and North Carolina. Gannon said he decided to get back into the restaurant industry because he believes so strongly in PDQ. “I think there’s magic at PDQ,” he said. “It’s the sum total of all the ingredients — it could be the music, it could be the building, it could be the color combination, it very well could be the people and the flavor of the food, but I think it’s the hospitality that really surfaces to the top.” The restaurant opened its doors in November and has become a popular dining spot, offering fresh chicken tenders, salads, sandwiches, hand-spun milkshakes and more. Though a fast-casual setting, PDQ offers customers a beautiful space to sit back and relax while they eat. The restaurant is bright with tall,

wood-beam ceilings. It is decorated in relaxing green and yellow tones with exposed brick walls. Guests order at the front and then choose from one of the tables, booths or high-tops to eat. Or, if guests can’t eat in, there is a drivethrough where a live person takes your order. Gannon said that the restaurant goes above and beyond to exceed its customers expectations in everything from the great-tasting food to the customer service. “We rise above on all the key points,” he said. “When you do that, people come back.” This makes it a great place for families, Gannon added. “I think families like to eat together. They like to go where it’s affordable, and they like to go where it’s quick,” he said. “We want to get people their food and then let them relax.” Having a drive-through window is useful for families on the go, he said. “It allows us to accommodate today’s families,” Gannon said. “To do it and offer healthy items like salads makes us a great option.” PDQ goes above and beyond in customer service, carrying trays for customers and even walking them to and from their vehicles when it rains. “We don’t just want to be the best in fast-casual dining,” Gannon said. “We want to have the best customer service anywhere.” One of the ways PDQ stands out is that it makes all its food in-house, and customers can watch through the open kitchen. “We have no freezer in the building,” Gannon said. “We have no microwaves. We cook everything to order. We make our salads fresh. We make the dressings in-house, and we punch our own potatoes. We don’t take any shortcuts.” 10th Anniversary |wellington the magazine| January 2014

The restaurant also offers healthy alternatives, like salads with grilled chicken and low-fat dressing, coleslaw in place of fries or apples for a fresh, healthy dessert. Even the fries are a healthier option than elsewhere. Gannon noted that PDQ bakes the fries first, which helps reduce fat. “We’re trying to make our food healthier, taste better and, at the same time, keep our prices low,” he said. The menu is simple, but customers are encouraged to customize their meals. “Even though the menu items are limited, the varieties of the menu items make it very expandable,” Gannon said. For example, customers can choose from 155 different drinks and mix them for more than 1,000 combinations. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. From salads to sandwiches and beyond, customers can make each meal their own, even at the drive-through window. PDQ is known for its fresh, handbreaded chicken tenders, and they make a great meal ($3.99 - 8.99). Served with fresh-cut fries or blueberry coleslaw, the meal is sure to satisfy. The chicken is delicious and flavorful, even without us120

ing one of seven dipping sauces. But the sauces, which range from bleu cheese and honey mustard to sweet heat and creamy garlic, pack a flavorful punch to enhance the meal. There’s also the option of chicken or turkey sandwiches ($6.99 for a meal), all of which offer juicy and mouth-watering delights. The grilled chicken sandwich is served on a wheat bun with honey mustard, lettuce, tomato and pickles, while the crispy chicken sandwich is served on an egg bun with mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato and pickles. One of the most popular menu items is the spicy buffalo tenders sandwich ($6.99 for a meal). With two crispy chicken tenders served on an egg bun with lettuce and the homemade buffalo bleu sauce, the meal is perfect for someone who likes a little zing. A healthier option is the grilled chicken salad ($5.99). With grilled chicken tenders served over mixed greens with tomatoes, candied almonds and Craisins, the salad makes for a satisfying meal. The dish is served with a sweet and tangy blueberry-ginger vinaigrette.

There are other great options as well. Gannon’s favorite item is the fresh apple slices marinated in pineapple juice and served with toffee dip ($1.99), a sweet but healthy take on dessert. “It’s healthy, it’s fresh, it’s new and innovative,” Gannon said. “It’s everything that PDQ embodies.” For something more indulgent, try one of the hand-spun milkshakes. PDQ offers everything from classic flavors like vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ($2.99 - $4.29) to specialty shakes like Oreo or apple pie ($3.49 - $4.99). Each shake is made fresh and makes for a delicious way to top off your meal. “They are rich and velvety and full of rich flavors,” Gannon said. No matter what you choose, you’re in for a delicious meal. “You can have a wonderful, healthy meal here,” Gannon said. “I think when people come here, they feel good, and they leave feeling better than when they came in.” PDQ, located at 2781 South State Road 7, is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
