Many take the New Year as an opportunity to begin with a blank canvas in which the imagination has no boundaries. As we create a new picture, with each colorful stroke we lay out a plan of hope and aspirations for the future. In this spirit, I am honored to take on an expanded mission as Wellington The Magazine’s publisher, and with this new role comes endless possibilities! As we kick off the winter equestrian season, we’re excited to team up with Venue Marketing Group to collaborate on this special issue celebrating 10 years of polo at the International Polo Club Palm Beach. We take a look back on how IPC came to be, as well as a look forward to the exciting polo season ahead. I’m also thrilled at how our “Faces of Polo” feature section came together, saluting some of the sport’s top players. Many thanks to all the amazing photographers who submitted their work for consideration in this special issue. Along with the beautiful ponies comes the fashion scene. This month, Wellington The Magazine had a chance to work with La Martina Palm Beach to bring you the latest fashions in equestrian wear, as well as stylists from Generations: A Hair Salon, who transformed our models for this month’s “Unbridled Fashion” pictorial. “I was shooting from the scoreboard at IPC in a U.S. Open game halfway through the tournament. I captured the photo unaware of the horseshoe. At the next game, I showed it to Mike and his family and asked him if he was aware that a horse had thrown a shoe. He replied that he realized something was in the air but not sure what. I told him this was the luck of Zacara (his team). They would go on to win the U.S. Open and Mike would be the MVP.”

Wellington To Create Foreclosure Registry

Shelley Sandler

Worried that unkempt vacant and foreclosed properties will keep down home values, the Wellington Village Council voted unanimously last month in favor of an ordinance that would give the village teeth in tackling abatement issues. Dubbed the “Real Property Mortgage Registration Ordinance,” the measure would require lenders to register with Wellington, pay an annual fee and require them to maintain the properties to Wellington’s code. The ordinance also requires lenders to register with vacantregistry.com, the village’s chosen vendor. “It’s not just uncut grass or poorly maintained pools anymore — it’s becoming real property maintenance issues,” Code Compliance Manager Steven Koch said. “It’s issues with dirty roofs or sidewalks.” The program has been successful in other communities. “Almost all of the municipalities we spoke to have a vendor for the registry,” he said. “Royal Palm Beach tried keeping track of properties, but decided it was too time consuming.” Councilwoman Anne Gerwig said she had been against similar measures in the past because costs would be passed on to consumers. However, she said this program could help keep homes from needing expensive repairs. Councilman Matt Willhite made a motion to approve the ordinance, which passed unanimously.

Polo Residents Win In Court — After three years of litigation, a judge ruled in November that developers must turn over control of the Palm Beach Polo Property Owners Association to residents of the community. Palm Beach County Circuit Court Judge Timothy McCarthy ruled that control of the association should have been turned over to homeowners by developer Palm Beach Polo Holdings Inc. as of Jan. 1, 2005, based on the number of homes platted for construction. The lawsuit is one of two filed by residents against Palm Beach Polo Holdings, owned by developer Glenn Straub. “It’s a huge

decision,” said attorney Howard Coates, who represented the residents. “It takes a large community that has been under developer control for in excess of 30 years and puts control into homeowners’ hands.” Coates, who also sits on the Wellington Village Council, said that Palm Beach Polo Holdings had been able to appoint five members to the POA board but that the ruling means it will be able to appoint only one. Straub said that he plans to appeal the decision but believes the lawsuit came about because residents were unhappy when his management company began assessing for maintenance. Zoners Oppose Biz Hour Change — Citing concerns about residents’ safety and sanity, members of Wellington’s Planning, Zoning & Adjustment Board asked village staff last month to place stricter conditions on proposed changes in the rules governing hours of operation for some Wellington businesses. The proposed ordinance would have removed limits on the hours of operation for businesses within 300 feet of homes, as long as activity on the site was contained entirely indoors. But at a Dec. 5 meeting, board members asked that the changes be reconsidered. “I believe that hours of operation need to be strictly controlled,” Board Member Paul Adams said. Wellington Principal Planner Bill Nemser explained that the ordinance would even the playing field for businesses throughout Wellington. Hours are already limited due to rules about noise, light and other disruptive activity. “Each of those issues is covered by other existing codes,” Nemser said. But Board Member Mike Drahos said he believed there should be regulations depending on the type of business. “I would like to be able to get gas at 1 a.m. or see a movie at midnight,” he said, “but I don’t want a convenience store open 24 hours that is within 300 feet of someone’s home.”

Hanley Center Family Picnic

Feb. 10 Event At PBIEC Benefits Addiction Treatment Programs STORY By Lauren Miró

PHOTOGRAPHY BY LILA PHOTO

Helping to fund addiction prevention and education programs, the Hanley Center’s 18th Annual Family Picnic will bring together families young and old for a day of fun, food and fundraising Sunday, Feb. 10 at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. The world-renowned addiction recovery center was founded more than 20 years ago and has made strides in providing recovery, treatment, support, education and prevention services, helping thousands who have struggled with addiction. The family picnic tradition began in the early 1990s.

“The reason we wanted a family-style event is that addiction is really a family disease,” Hanley Center Foundation CEO Dr. Rachel Docekal said. “The number-one thing that helps keep kids off drugs is sitting down as a family and eating a meal together. Anything we can do to promote activities of a family can help.” This year’s event is chaired by Lisa and Dan Thomas, with child chairman and son, Jack; and honorary chairmen, Dorothy and Sheriff Ric Bradshaw, with child honorary chairman and grandson, Noah LoFaso.

“We’ve seen families torn apart due to a parent or child dealing with an addiction problem,” Lisa Thomas said. “I was a public school teacher in Palm Beach County, and I saw firsthand students bringing alcohol and drugs to school. We felt this was something important because you never know what a family could be going through. One day it could be you.” Her husband agreed. “We really appreciated the idea of a family-friendly event that supports such a good cause,” Dan Thomas said. |wellington the magazine| January 2013

The Bradshaws said that supporting the Hanley Center was a natural fit. “If you look at the jail population, 85 percent of them have a substance abuse problem,” Sheriff Bradshaw explained. “Whether they are there because of a DUI or buying or selling drugs, they are there because of problems with abuse. When you have a group like the Hanley Center, which reaches out to educate young people, it helps to make strides to get young people off of these substances.” Not getting help can have fatal consequences. “Every 27 hours in Palm Beach County we handle an overdose case,” he said. “You don’t always hear about them, but these are people who die or are nearly killed because of drugs and alcohol.” Because of this, Dorothy Bradshaw said it is important to help organizations

like the Hanley Center. “We see so much of what substance abuse can result in,” she said. “It’s important to us to bring awareness to the issue in every way possible.” And Hanley’s family picnic aims to do just that, with all of the proceeds going directly to the foundation to fund educational and prevention programs in the community. “We have prevention programs where our staff goes out into the community, whether it’s to schools or on our campus, and puts on programs designed to delay the first use of drugs and alcohol,” Docekal said. “We also try to educate as many professionals as we can in Palm Beach and surrounding counties to teach them about addiction. We bring in physicians and other professionals and teach them the signs to look for, and how to get their patients help.”

Set against a backdrop of the spectacular Artisan Farms Grand Prix jumping competition at PBIEC, the event will include lunch, animal encounters, a magic show, kids crafts and a silent auction. “We have amazing silent auction items,” Docekal said. “Many are geared toward parents, but there is also a silent auction that is directly for kids. They have their own items, and all the kids have a lot of fun bidding and trying to stay within their budget.” In fact, there will be plenty for kids to do, from watching the horses to enjoying the activities. “It’s a family-friendly atmosphere,” Lisa Thomas said. “It’s important for kids to be involved with the causes their parents are active in.” Dan Thomas noted that the Hanley

Center is focused on helping all families, from adults to children. “Addiction starts early in a lot of homes,” he said. “A lot of children are unfortunately exposed at an early age. The real key is to try to deal with it as early as you can, and the center has been proactive in doing this. This is not a typical charity event geared toward adults, but focused on families.” Tickets to the event cost $195 for adults (18 and over), $50 per child (7-17 years of age), and free for children 6 and under. ‘Get Into Africa’

Feb. 7 Benefit Will Help Kenyan Orphans By Lauren Miró

With more than 2.3 million orphans in Kenya alone, the Wellington-based nonprofit Dream Sponsors is helping to make a difference by providing funding for education and basic necessities. The community can help make a child’s life better when Dream Sponsors hosts “Get Into Africa” on Thursday, Feb. 7 at the Players Club Restaurant outdoor patio bar from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The night of vibrant music, dance, food and drink specials, vendors and more will benefit the nonprofit organization’s mission to make a difference in the lives of orphaned Kenyan children. “Because of poverty and medical issues in the country that are readily treated here, children are losing their parents at a very young age,” Dream Sponsors founder Carla Neumann said. “What are curable diseases here are death sentences for people there.” Neumann, a Wellington resident, founded the organization in 2006 after traveling to Kenya to meet a young professional she had been mentoring. “He had taken in former street orphans,” she said. “I was helping him with programs and grants for the kids. I decided to go meet them, and I was really inspired by the stories of survival and loss.”

Her interest was further compounded when she heard of another young man studying at Lynn University who was orphaned in the Congo. “He and his brother walked to a refugee camp, which took them more than two weeks,” Neumann recalled. “He was right here in Boca, and we spoke about starting a project to help children like him.” Dream Sponsors has provided orphaned children in Kenya with basic necessities like food, beds, mosquito nets and other supplies, as well as paid the education fees that can help start them on the path to a better life. “We have two teams of volunteers in Kenya who are responsible for buying the supplies,” Neumann said. “One is in the rural western region, and the other team is in the city of Nairobi, where most of the children come from deplorable slums. The sponsorships and donations here are transferred to our reliable volunteers who pay the school fees and help provide for the children. They do home and school

visits and report back on students’ progress.” The Feb. 7 event will feature music by Positively Africa, an African band based in Lake Worth. Also featured will be tribal jewelry and collectibles made by African tribes and offered through 4 Africa Now. “The proceeds will support three tribes in Africa,” Neumann said. “There will also be African dancers performing tribal dances.” Attendees can buy tickets in advance or at the door, and entry is a minimum donation of $10. There will also be several raffle prizes, with the top prize being a one-week family stay in Lake Lure, N.C. Raffle tickets cost $20 each or six for $100. Vendor spaces are still available at the event, Neumann said. “We can feed a child for about a week with $5,” she said. “The need is tremendous, and all the money goes back into the project.” For more information, visit www.dream sponsorsinc.org or call (561) 795-2223.

World Dressage Masters Palm Beach

Jan. 23-26 Event Features Top International Riders Top dressage competitors from around the world will once again pirouette their way into Palm Beach County at the World Dressage Masters Palm Beach CDI5* Jan. 23-26. The event, organized by Wellington Classic Dressage, will take place at Palm Beach County’s Jim Brandon Equestrian Center, in conjunction with the Wellington Classic Dressage Sunshine Challenge CDI3*. Always one of the Florida dressage scene’s must-see events, the WDM Palm Beach features top riders from around the globe competing in one of the richest show series in the dressage world. The World Dressage Masters, presented by the Axel Johnson Group, offers over €450,000 (more than $580,000) in total prize money over the several World Dressage Masters shows hosted worldwide. The WDM Palm Beach CDI5* is the only leg of the series hosted in North America and boasts prize money of €100,000 (approximately $130,000). The World Dressage Masters Palm

Beach drew nearly 10,000 spectators and competitors throughout the four-day show in 2012 and set records for attendance in North American dressage. The 2012 event featured the only appearance in North America by two of Great Britain’s Olympic gold medal team members: Charlotte Dujardin and her coach and fellow teammate, Carl Hester. It also showcased to the North American audience the world’s soon-tobe crowned individual Olympic gold medal Grand Prix Freestyle pair of Dujardin and Valegro. “The World Dressage Masters has been the crown jewel of the Wellington

Classic Dressage circuit,” former U.S. Olympic Dressage Team Technical Adviser Anne Gribbons said. “It brings enough riders from Europe to make it a very exciting competition. It has been very well-run for the past two years. They take the facility at the Jim Brandon Center and make it intimate — cozy and exciting at the same time. The place was packed the past two years, which gives it a really good atmosphere.” Wellington Classic Dressage has also helped the event garner a unique reputation for fabulous food and entertainment and, of course, topnotch competition. The 2012 event brought world-class equestrians to the area including Olympians Dujardin, Hester, Steffen Peters, Adrienne Lyle, Tina Konyot, Minne Tilde, Ashley Holzer, Jacqueline Brooks, Per Sandgaard and Tinne Vilhelmson-Silfven, along with superstar dressage riders Todd Flettrich, Heather Blitz, James Kofford, Pierre St. Jacques and Anja Plönzke. The grand finale of last year’s event was the Grand Prix Freestyle, where the final eight of the world’s top-ranked horses and riders competed. and Valegro to win the freestyle for their share of the €70,000 ($92,000) in prize money for that class. “WDM in Wellington is the only dressage competition where U.S. riders get to compete against European riders on their home ground,” Peters said. “It is a true honor to represent the United States of America. The Jim Brandon Center turns into a stunning show facility, and all organizers give this competition a true international atmosphere.” Peters recently rode for the U.S. in the London Olympics and also at the Atlanta and Beijing Olympic Games. The World Dressage Masters is so popular among the top international dressage riders, they vie for invitations to compete in the prestigious event. Not only do they come for the prize money, but they also enjoy the ideal

weather, restaurants, shopping and the ambiance Wellington offers in January. “Riding in the World Dressage Masters is such an honor, and an incredible experience to be a part of,” Lyle said. “It is top dressage competition at its best. The atmosphere they create is phenomenal and full of excitement for the competitors and audience alike.” Brooks, a Canadian Olympic athlete and Florida fixture during the show season, agreed. “It’s such an honor to be invited to participate in this event,” she said. “The organizing committee does such a fantastic job with the venue and the show that it feels like a championship!” Noreen O’Sullivan, show manager and managing partner of Wellington Classic Dressage, is thrilled to be hosting the event for the third year. “We are looking forward to welcoming top

riders, both from North America and abroad, to the 2013 World Dressage Masters CDI5*,” she said. “It will be the premier dressage event of the season in Palm Beach County, and it’s certainly a coup that we can again host such a prestigious event and showcase Wellington and Palm Beach to the world.” Immediately following the WDM will be the first Global Dressage Forum North America, set for Jan. 28-29, also at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center. The GDFNA, presented by dressageclinic. com and Wellington Classic Dressage, will feature the world’s top dressage educators presenting training demonstrations with international and Olympic champions. Ingrid Klimke, Peters, Wolfram Wittig and Rudolf Zeilinger will lecture and demonstrate with both horses and pupils, allowing in-depth insight into what makes their methods so successful. All in all, six

clinicians, four lecturers and 12 panelists will be featured in the intense, two-day educational event. Andreas Stano, executive director of dressageclinic.com, chose to schedule the GDFNA immediately following the World Dressage Masters. “The top international riders from Europe, North America and South America come to compete in South Florida,” he said. “World Dressage Masters is a world-class event, and it will be immediately followed by a world-class educational event — the Global Dressage Forum North America. The entire equestrian world is in Florida in January.” To learn more about the World Dressage Masters Palm Beach, visit the event’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ worlddressagemasterspalmbeach or the Wellington Classic Dressage web site at www.wellingtonclassicdressage.com.

Unbridle Your Fashion This Season The 2013 equestrian season is underway in Wellington, and along with all the beautiful ponies comes the beautiful fashion scene. This month, we had a chance to work with La Martina to bring you the latest fashions in equestrian wear. Irene Perez took us on a tour of her Wellington location to show us some of the hottest, latest looks. We selected a few items from the collection, which are highlighted over the next several pages. Our fashion models had the great opportunity to work with this month’s styling partners, Generations: A Hair Salon. Owners Monica Hoffman and Anthony Gutilla were hands-on, offering recommendations for both hair and makeup techniques as the Generations staff transformed our models for this “Unbridled Fashion” photo shoot. Creating unique looks from flat, straight reds to curly brunettes to blonde waves, Generations embellished our models’ already gorgeous looks by adding a few extensions, defining their beautiful hair and making it thicker and fuller to the look and feel. Welcoming Wellington The Magazine, our models and staff photographer Abner Pedraza to her Two Swans Farm, Carol Cohen gave us the perfect backdrop, setting the tone for this equestrian fashion extravaganza. Where better to shoot than on this exquisite, 10-acre custom equestrian estate in Wellington? The 12-stall, European-style courtyard stable with endless Argentinean granite cobblestone framed the expansive grounds.

Wellington Preservation Coalition Group Aims To Protect Community’s Future The Wellington Preservation Coalition is a nonprofit corporation established by local residents, the Jacobs family. It is a local organization that wants to help preserve and maintain Wellington’s character, nature and quality of life. Former Wellington Mayor Tom Wenham, who recently retired from Palm Beach County Fire-Rescue, was chosen to be the coalition’s executive director. “I don’t want to see all the open space lost. We are not against development, but we want to see smart growth and planned growth to keep Wellington as beautiful as we can,” Wenham said. The coalition recently held its first committee meeting and is planning to meet again Thursday, Jan. 10 at 7 p.m. in the original Wellington Mall at 12794 W. Forest Hill Blvd. The coalition has been involved thus far in the Wellington American Legion Post 390 Golf Tournament, the Palm Beach County Sports Commission Field Hockey Tournament, Wellington’s Fall Festival, Project Graduation for Wellington and Palm Beach Central high schools, Wellington’s Veterans Day Parade, the Wellington Holiday Parade and tree lighting, and

nature walks and equestrian trails,” Wenham said. “It is truly a beautiful park — it really, really is — and we want to help the village in keeping it up so that it remains beautiful for generations to come.”

“We are proud to be active members of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, the Central Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Palm Beach County,” Wenham said. “We are also members of the Wellington Art Society, the Arthur Marshall Foundation, 1000 Friends of Florida, the Sierra Club and the Florida Garden Club.”

The coalition has also joined many of the state’s leading conservation groups, such as the Sierra Club, the Audubon Society and others, in endorsing the Florida Water & Land Legacy Conservation’s constitutional amendment. “This is one of the most important campaigns for land conservation and the environment in many years,” Wenham said. “We encourage all Wellington residents to work with us to get signatures on the petition forms, which we have in our office.”

The coalition is currently working with Wellington staff in regard to the 350 acres of Wellington’s Environmental Preserve on Flying Cow Road off Southern Blvd. and also Peaceful Waters Sanctuary, which is adjacent to Village Park off Pierson Road. “The Wellington Environmental Preserve has

The constitutional amendment will be on the November 2014 ballot. Call the Wellington Preservation Coalition office if you would like to be involved. “We understand the value of clean and abundant water for people and wildlife and the importance to cherish the natural areas that make Florida and Wellington special,” Wenham said. “Because there are about 2 million acres of water protection areas, beaches and other vital natural areas that remain vulnerable, the coalition strongly endorses this amendment and hope you will feel the same.” To get involved with the Wellington Preservation Coalition, call (561) 333-9843 or e-mail contact@ preservewellington.org. THE International Polo Club

Marks 10 Years Of World-Class Polo Action Home to the most prestigious polo tournaments on the continent, the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington will open its 10th anniversary season Sunday, Jan. 6. Thoroughbred horses charging down the field, the solid click of mallet on ball, the pop of a champagne cork and the excited revelry of thousands will return for the 2013 season. “Our 10th anniversary is an important milestone because it represents 10 years of consistency in the production of the highest level of polo competition in North America, as well as ongoing events that support both the

Wellington community and the club itself,” President of Club Operations John Wash said. As ingrained as this tradition has become in Wellington, it hasn’t always been this way. Wellington first established itself as an international destination for world-class polo in the late 1970s, but the decline of the revered Palm Beach Polo & Country Club as a host site for high-goal polo in the late 1990s led players and patrons to seek a new venue. Operating under the name South Florida Polo Club, the community worked together, initially using private

fields to maintain elite-caliber competition. Eventually this led to the creation of the International Polo Club Palm Beach. The first break came in 2002 when the club gained custodianship of the 26-goal C.V. Whitney Cup Tournament. With more teams and players from around the globe flocking to the fledgling venue, the club emerged as high-goal polo’s new home in Wellington. In 2004, with contractors busy at work on the now-famous 7th Chukker clubhouse and the stadium facility, the International Polo Club landed the

United States Polo Association’s prestigious U.S. Open Championship. At that point, the club’s fate was charted. The club ran the table in 2007 when the United States Polo Association awarded IPC the Gold Cup Tournament, making it the first club to host the three highest-rated polo tournaments in the nation. In the following years, three more polo fields were added, along with grandstands, private boxes, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a croquet lawn and a luxury spa, which catered to a growing social membership. The new

Grand Pavilion and a ninth polo field were added more recently. “We are pleased to celebrate our tenth season producing week after week of championship Sunday polo events that have attractions for entire families in the friendly atmosphere of the club itself,” Wash said. What keeps IPC as the preferred venue for polo’s elite is its attention to detail. The grounds are meticulously maintained by Polo Manager Jimmy Newman and Director of Facilities & Operations Ray Mooney. “The fields are in excellent shape right

now,” Newman said. “A polo field is the largest field in organized sport. As we near the start of the 2013 season, the warm weather is cooperating in producing a good growth spurt of our Bermuda hybrid turf.” Newman said the fields this year will be even better to play on than last year, crediting Mooney for the work he has done getting the club ready for the 10th anniversary season. “Each season has eclipsed the previous here at IPC,” Newman said. “Once again the competing teams will raise the level of play with better horses, players and organization. Every

10-goal handicap polo player in the world will be playing at IPC this winter, creating the largest field of 26-goal teams to play anywhere. The continuous trend of attracting the elite players nationally and internationally has set us apart from all other polo clubs in the country.” As someone who has watched polo develop in Wellington for decades, Newman finds this year’s roster even more impressive than years past. “These 2013 teams are unbelievable,” he said. “Looking over the rosters, it is easy to say that they all have a chance to win. In the 20-goal series, last year’s winners — Coca-Cola, Piaget and Valiente — look very good again for 2013. In the 26-goal series, the 2012 winners Valiente and Zacara also appear strong. But don’t rule out the other teams, though, since there are always variables involved in every match. And, of course, Lady Luck is always in play!” Wash is looking forward to several marquee events this season. “A highlight of every season at IPC is the Outback 40-Goal Challenge, this year set for Feb. 16, in which the eight highest-rated polo players in the world compete in an exhibition charity match,” Wash said. “The prospects of seeing these same participants leading their teams in competition for the USPA Piaget Gold Cup (March 10-24) or the USPA Maserati 109th U.S. Open Polo Championship (March 31 - April 21) are perennial favorites as well.” This year, IPC has made some changes to make the Sunday polo experience more enjoyable for fans and players alike. “We have altered our menus at both the Grand Pavilion and the Wellington Zone, and our mascot, Chukker, will spend more time interacting with the public in the course of the matches,” Wash said. “Our fun zone continues to be available to entertain the younger attendees while tailgate and hat contests seem to energize even the most sophisticated polo followers. Jazz bands and celebratory trophy presentations continue to highlight the Sunday activities as we cheer on our favorite players and teams.” Wash is also proud of all the community events that IPC hosts beyond high-goal polo. “We’ve hosted the National Field Hockey Festival, the largest event of its kind in the world, bringing thousands of top athletes to the area and creating an economic boom to Wellington itself,” he noted. “Youth soccer tournaments, lacrosse camps, dressage competitions and international 46

sporting weeks have all been identified as part of the International Polo Club character.” Meanwhile, the club’s future looks bright. In April of last year, the USPA granted IPC an extension on its contract to host the top three national polo tournaments. The club inked a threeyear deal with the USPA to host the C.V.

Whitney Cup, the USPA Gold Cup and the U.S. Open Polo Championship. At the time, USPA CEO Peter Rizzo said that keeping the tournaments in Wellington is ideal. “The International Polo Club has top fields and a beautiful stadium,” he said. “It seems natural for the USPA’s top

events to be hosted there. They truly are the best. Teams want to come to Wellington. The venue draws them there.” The International Polo Club Palm Beach is located at 3667 120th Ave. South in Wellington. For more information, call (561) 204-5687 or visit www. internationalpoloclub.com.

From Orange Groves To IPC

The History Of High-Goal Polo In Wellington The International Polo Club Palm Beach, today the most prominent polo facility in the nation, evolved out of agricultural lands featuring orange groves, strawberry fields and herds of cattle that became the celebrated equestrian community called Wellington. Wellington was not initially conceived as an equestrian mecca. Starting in the 1950s, most of the land that is now Wellington was purchased by New York

accounting magnate C. Oliver Wellington. Wellington and his family made many trips to the land they dubbed “the Flying C.O.W. Ranch,” after the initials of the family patriarch. After the senior Wellington died in 1959, his son Roger Wellington began to explore ways to develop the property, then mostly used for agriculture. Working with a company known as the Investment Corporation of Florida (ICOF), the community was granted approval in 1972 to develop 18,200 acres — the largest single development ever approved in Palm Beach County. After developing Wellington’s oldest residential neighborhoods, ICOF sold its interests to Gould Florida. It was Gould’s polo-playing chairman, Bill Ylvisaker, who laid the groundwork for the community as an equestrian capital. Aside from the creation of Palm Beach Polo & Country Club, Ylvisaker also provided a home for what would become the Winter Equestrian Festival and created other unique neighborhoods such as Wellington’s famed Aero Club. “I got the idea that if I built nice homes and combined it with polo, a lot of people would think that was a good idea,” the late Ylvisaker modestly told Wellington The Magazine in 2005.

Palm Beach Polo opened in 1979, beginning the first golden age of polo in Wellington. The historic Palm Beach Polo stadium became known far and wide as a polo destination. It was the site of many top tournaments and even hosted

a visit from Prince Charles and Princess Diana in the 1980s. In the late 1990s, with Palm Beach Polo on the wane as a high-goal venue, players and patrons began laying the groundwork for a new club. Private fields were offered by their owners as the teams, players and patrons worked together to create ongoing world-class competition. Former 9-goal American star Red Armour managed the league and tournament play in the early goings, operating under the name South Florida Polo Club. S.K. Johnston Jr. put his Everglades field into the pot along with the old Revlon Field that used to belong to Mickey Tarnopol; the two fields at Isla Carroll were also added to the mix. In 2002, the new club cinched the guardianship of the 26-goal C.V. Whitney Cup tournament, as well as the Hall of Fame Cup, the Iglehart Cup and the Ylvisaker Cup, played at the 22-goal level. The initial concept of a polo facility composed of a few fields and a casual barbecue area where teams could socialize transformed into the vision of a polo facility on a far grander scale — the International Polo Club Palm Beach. In 2004, with construction underway on the new stadium, IPC landed the United States Polo Association’s prestigious U.S. Open Championship, followed by the Gold Cup tournament in 2007, sealing the club’s place in history alongside the world’s most elite polo clubs, now home to all three legs of American polo’s “triple crown.” |wellington the magazine| January 2013

What To Wear?

Dress The Part When Heading Out To Polo Polo allows spectators the luxury of dressing up or dressing down, but do pay attention to how and from where you plan to watch the match. In the famous polo scene from the movie Pretty Woman, Julia Roberts arrives on the sidelines wearing a brown sundress with polka dots and a matching hat. Such an outfit would certainly be appropriate for box seats, Sunday brunch or a charity event. What you will see at every polo match is a variety of attire from blue jeans and boots to designer fashions. Men can wear slacks or jeans, with a jacket option popular for those sitting in box seats or enjoying brunch in the Pavilion. “Fashion gets dressier as the season goes on, explained polo enthusiast Kirsten Braden. “You can’t go wrong if you think elegant, classical clothing, whether it’s a dress or a pair of nice slacks.” Of course, the games are held outdoors, and the weather will be a factor in your wardrobe selection. Keep in mind that there is a lot of grass and unpaved areas, which make high heels impractical. Women are most often found in a smart platform heel, wedge, boots or comfortable flats. “For sure, you don’t want to wear stiletto heels, because at halftime you go onto the field,” Braden said, referring to the popular divot stomp. “A nice wedged heel is the way to go. It can be sunny, and the hats and sunglasses look is still in style.” Braden warned non-equestrians from trying too hard to look the part. “Don’t dig into the back of your closet for a pair of riding breeches because you think that’s what people wear,” she said. “You don’t want to look like you’ve just gotten off a horse unless you actually did.” Nothing beats an afternoon at polo, added stylist Heather Weisz. “The experience is amazing,” she said. “It’s very exciting, but also a great family event.”

What you wear is often determined by your point of view, Weisz explained. “You have different groups of people. The singles like to go out and get dressed up, but then you have families out there with kids,” she said. “It’s an amazing sport with a rich history that is also very culturally diverse.” In Weisz’ experience, most people go for cute but casual. “You’ll notice that many of the players and patrons dress casually, but other people want to get dressed up,” she said. The great thing about the International Polo Club, Braden said, is that people come from all over the world. “This is reflected in the fashion,” she added. “You see a lot of designers like Ralph Lauren, Donna Karen, Gucci or Hermes. You can never go wrong with a nicely tied Hermes scarf, whether it’s tied around your neck or even worn as a belt.” Men, meanwhile, can get away with jeans and a nice dress shirt. “White jeans are still acceptable,” Braden added, “but don’t pair them with polo boots unless you’re playing. Even the polo players take their boots off to socialize.”

Polo & Brunch:

A Perfect Match

Experience the energy of the legendary, world-class Sunday brunch at the International Polo Club Palm Beach from 3 to 5 p.m. each week from Jan. 6 through April 21. The event features designer shopping, wall-to-wall buffets, champagne, specialty bars, celebrity sightings, live music and high fashion. “Hands down, we have one of the best brunch experiences in the world,” said Aaron Menitoff, director of International Polo Club Catering. “You cannot get what we offer anywhere else, and it’s a tremendous value. There is something for everyone when you come to IPC.” Sunday brunch at IPC’s Pavilion is as much about the food and drink as it is about the people watching — celebrity sightings, shopping, dancing, laughing, flirting, reconnecting, networking and, of course, polo. “The Pavilion is a casually sophisticated atmosphere without being pretentious,” Menitoff said. “Everyone who comes for the first time

emphatically states that they cannot believe they’ve missed out on this until now, and they’re definitely making plans to come back!” People travel from all over the world in order to experience what has become a legendary tradition. “Here in Wellington, we are so fortunate to have IPC in our own back yard,” Menitoff said. “It epitomizes a glamorous lifestyle we all watch on TV and read about in magazines… It’s like stepping into an alternate universe where everyone gets to be royalty for the day.” Brunch costs $100 in January and February, and $120 in March and April. That includes pavilion reception, the lavish gourmet brunch, veranda seating and two complimentary drink tokens. Looking for just a bit more? The Veuve Clicquot Champagne Brunch Package for two costs $300 in January and February, and $330 in March and April. This special package includes complimentary valet parking, pavilion reception, the lavish gourmet brunch and a complimentary bottle of Veuve Clicquot.

Menitoff has a number of special creations planned for the 2013 season. “We try to keep a balance of traditional, sophisticated culinary options while adding items and action stations people have never experienced before for those who are feeling adventurous,” he said. “We attract such a diverse demographic because we offer an extensive range of options. We have traditional omelet and crepe stations as well as interactive food stations such as a floating tapas bar, live wood smoking seafood stations, suspended buffets, liquid nitrogen cocktails and savory cotton candy stations, to name just a few.” So, mark your calendar and make your brunch plans today. “If you haven’t attended yet because you’re intimidated to come out, don’t be,” Menitoff said. “I’ve never seen a happier, more friendly group of people. Ask for me, and I’ll show you around!” To reserve your brunch tickets, call (561) 204-5687 or visit www. internationalpoloclub.com. |wellington the magazine| January 2013

Polo Explained

All You Need To Know About The ‘Sport Of Kings’ Polo — the “sport of kings” — traces its roots back to ancient Persia. Today, this unique horseback sport is played in 77 countries around the world, with the largest clubs in the United States, Argentina, England, India and Pakistan. It’s a team sport played on a field the size of nine football fields. Divided into periods called “chukkers,” riders score by driving a ball into the opposing team’s goal using a long-handled mallet. In Wellington, the best place to watch high-goal polo is at the International Polo Club Palm Beach on 120th Avenue South. However, the game is also played at other venues and private fields. If you are going to watch a match, get to know these key terms: APPEALING — Claims by players for a foul, generally expressed by the raising of mallets above the head or by a helicopter motion. BACK SHOT — One of the basic strokes requiring a backhand swing, changing the flow of play by sending the ball in the opposite direction. BALL — Usually made of plastic and white in color. It weighs 4.5 ounces and is 3.5 inches in diameter. BUMP — A player is permitted to ride into another to spoil his opponent’s shot or remove him from the play. The angle of collision must be no

more than 45 degrees. A good bump can shake your dentures loose! CHUKKER — There are six chukkers (periods) in a polo match, each lasting seven minutes. If a game is tied after six chukkers, a sudden-death seventh chukker is played. FIELD — The polo field is 300 yards long by 160 yards wide, or the area of nine football fields. The goal posts, which collapse on impact, are set 8 yards apart. GOAL — Any time the ball crosses the line between the goal posts, it is considered a goal

regardless of who knocks it through (including a horse). In order to equalize field conditions, teams change ends after each goal is scored. HANDICAP — All players are rated on a scale of -2 to 10 goals (the higher the better). Although the word “goal” is used after the rating, it bears no relation to the number of goals a player scores in a match, but rather the player’s ability. The team handicap is the sum of its players’ handicaps. HOOK — A player may spoil another’s shot by putting his mallet in the way of the striking player’s mallet.

KNOCK-IN — Should a team hit the ball across their opponent’s backline during an offensive attack, the defending team resumes the game with a free hit from the backline. LINE OF THE BALL — Crossing the line is the most frequent foul in polo. The line of the ball, that imaginary path along which the ball travels, represents a right of way for the last player striking the ball.

on an infraction from a set distance determined by the severity of the foul committed.

yards out from the backline at the same point where the ball crossed the backline.

PONIES — The best polo ponies are not ponies, but Thoroughbreds. Their main qualities are speed, stamina, heart, wind, the ability to accelerate, stop and turn quickly, and a temperament amenable to the rigors of the game. There is no height limit for the horses, although most are between 15 and 15.5 hands.

SIDEBOARDS — A vertical board along the sidelines of the field.

NECK SHOT — A ball that is hit under the horse’s neck.

POSITIONS — Each of the four team members plays a distinctly different position. Players may momentarily change positions, but will try to return to their initial assignment. No. 1 is the most forward offensive player. No. 2 is just as aggressive, but plays harder, especially on defense. No. 3, usually the highest-rated player on the team, is the pivotal player on offense and defense and tries to turn all plays to offense. No. 4, or Back, is the defensive player whose primary responsibility is to protect the goal.

OUT OF BOUNDS — When a ball goes over the sideboards, it is considered out of bounds, and play resumes with a throw-in at the point that it left the field of play. The clock does not stop when the ball goes out of bounds.

RIDE-OFF — Two riders may make contact and attempt to push each other off the line to prevent opponents from hitting the ball. It is intended for the horses to do the pushing, but a player may use his body (but not elbows).

OFF SIDE — The right-hand side of the horse.

SAFETY — Also known as a Penalty 6, a safety is awarded when a defending player hits the ball across his own backline. The shot is taken 60

MALLET — The stick the player wields to propel the ball. The flexible shaft is made from bamboo cane and the head from either the bamboo root or a hard wood such as maple. Polo mallets range in size from 48 to 54 inches, depending on the height of the player and size of the horse. NEAR SIDE — The left-hand side of the horse.

PENALTY — A free hit toward goal is awarded

64

January 2013 |wellington the magazine|

SUDDEN DEATH — In the event of a tie score at the end of the final chukker, there will be a five-minute break to allow the players to catch their breath and change to a fresh mount. The first team to score wins. TAIL SHOT — Hitting the ball behind and under the horse’s rump. THIRD MAN — The referee sitting at the sidelines who arbitrates in the case of a disagreement between the two umpires on the field. THROW-IN — A chukker begins and many plays resume with the umpire bowling the ball between the two teams. TIME OUT — Called by the umpire when a foul is committed, an accident occurs or at his own discretion. A player may ask for a time out only if he has broken tack or is injured. UMPIRES — Two mounted officials (one for each side of the field) consult each other after every infraction and impose a penalty only if they agree.

Faces

Of

P o l o Wellington has been home to the nation’s best polo for more than three decades. In the winter season, polo’s many parts come together to create the perfect experience — Sunday brunch, tailgating, divot stomping and more. But it’s the tremendous athletes who bring the sport to life that form the nucleus of this world. Over the next several pages, Wellington The Magazine highlights some of the familiar polo faces who gallantly lead their steeds down the fields of the International Polo Club Palm Beach in pursuit of eternal glory.

JEFF BLAKE Jeff Blake’s climb to the upper echelon of players was slow but steady as he played on winning teams in the USPA Gold Cup in 1998, 1999 and 2003. U.S. Open wins in 1999 and 2008 bolstered his credentials, and in 2009 he was selected to represent the United States in the historic Westchester Cup (U.S. vs. England). Adolfo Cambiaso is considered to be the best polo player in the world today. At the age of 17, he became the youngest player in the game to achieve a 10-goal handicap. Cambiaso has won numerous major tournaments in England, Spain, Argentina and the United States. A finalist in the 2012 C.V. Whitney Cup and a winner of last season’s USPA Piaget Gold Cup, before an injury held him out of U.S. Open play, he will be joined by 10-goaler Pelon Stirling on Bob Jornayvaz’s Valiente team for this season’s campaign.

Although Nacho Figueras won’t be taking to the fields at the International Polo Club this season, he has made an indelible impact on the global polo community. In his efforts to promote the game of polo, the “face of Ralph Lauren Polo” has played in charity matches with Prince Harry and has appeared on numerous TV shows such as Oprah and Conan, just to name a few. Perhaps the most recognizable face in the game, Figueras spent several years competing at IPC with Neil Hirsch’s Black Watch team.

Julio Gracida is the son of polo great Memo Gracida. The 4-goaler has been coming into his own as of late. A hard-hitting, defenseoriented player, Gracida is an accomplished horseman and a student of the game. No newcomer to the high-goal game, he won the U.S. Open Championship in 2005 as a member of Peter Brant’s White Birch team. Currently rated at 3 goals, Hale carried a 5-goal handicap at one point and was the highest-rated female player in the game. She is the daughter of the first woman admitted to the United States Polo Association, Sue Sally Hale. Until 1972, women weren’t allowed to join the association, but today, they represent some 42 percent of the membership. Hale’s establishment of the Women’s Championship Tournament (WCT) set a framework for national and international competition for top women players. As an added project, she established the American Polo Horse Association in 2006 to “recognize the Polo Pony in America.”

Wins in the U.S. Open, the America Cup, the East Coast Open and several USPA Silver Cups have firmly established Hall as a player to be reckoned with, and his desire to improve as a rider and player increases with the competition. Appearances on U.S. teams in 2009 and 2012 are opening up a larger world for the 7-goaler as he joins Orchard Hill for the International Polo Club’s 20-goal season this year.

For Laura Kraut...

Life Begins At The End Of Your Comfort Zone European competition Helps U.S. Olympian Excel With Her Mounts By Kendall Bierer

It’s never easy to leave your home behind, but each summer, Laura Kraut leaves sunny Florida for the green countryside of Great Britain and the opportunity to compete against the world’s best riders. Kraut has made a name for both herself and her protégés in their travels abroad, using the high level of competition at home and overseas to further their growth in equestrian sport. Kraut is a decorated riding veteran,

with an Olympic Team Gold Medal in 2008 and a major victory this summer in the Global Champions Tour Grand Prix of Switzerland. She is an avid supporter of the shows overseas. “I think that it is a big step to take [showing abroad] and it is scary, but it is something that allows you to see where you truly stand in comparison to the rest of the world,” Kraut said. “In order to stay at the top of this sport, you have to get outside of your comfort zone and go ahead and see

where you stack up against the rest of the world.” Kraut has been traveling to England for several years, and with the unique circumstance of being partnered with Great Britain’s Nick Skelton, she and her students make the countryside their summer base. The opportunity to grow and learn in an environment outside of their “American back yard” provides a chance for the future generations of riders to push themselves to their fullest potential.

Europe is one of the most influential places for equestrian sports, not only with top athletes, but also with strong equestrian traditions. Kraut uses these foundations to continue to build her protégés, using national shows to introduce them to the international world. It is this kind of development that consistently pushes her students to be their best and go further than they thought possible. Jessica Springsteen and Alise Oken both have traveled and showed with Kraut, rising to the occasion as top riders and learning the ropes in a setting that allows for them to still have the luxury of communication. “I remember the first show I ever competed in abroad,” Kraut recalled. “I was so confused and overwhelmed. It was in France, and as we were warming up, I could hear all of these names being called, but I didn’t know the European riders, and I didn’t know the language. Luckily, I have learned the system these days, so if I am ever confused, I can ask someone for help in understanding.” Kraut believes it is extremely important for world-class American riders to have European show experience. “It is really important to have that experience of riding internationally and competing against the quality and quantity of great riders. When you put yourself in that position, you become more comfortable and confident in what both you and your horse can accomplish,” he said. “My students start out in England so they can compete in national shows while still acclimating to a social situation that is similar enough to the United States.”

Equestrian Federation placed her on the long list of competitors with her mount Vornado. Although Springsteen didn’t ride for a medal this year, a feat she one day wishes to accomplish, she has continued to climb the ranks. During the 2011 Alltech National Horse Show, she rode to the top of the leader board and claimed the Martha Jolicoeur Leading Lady Rider Award. Springsteen competed in the Puissance class at both the Washington International Horse Show and the Alltech National Horse Show, tying for second place after meeting their match with the 7-foot wall.

With the Winter Equestrian Festival getting underway this month, Kraut looks forward to the upcoming 12-week competition. She admitted that she will be placing a lot of focus on keeping Cherry Knoll Farm’s Olympic mount Cedric sound and focused. She wishes to keep the athletic mount at the highest level of jumping, for as long as time allows.

Kraut will focus on the money classes, and show Cedric sparingly. After coming off of a phenomenal international tour, the dynamic duo will work together to maintain a healthy relationship at home. “I would like to keep him jumping for as long as I can,” she said. “He still acts young, and I am hoping to get at least two or three years out him. He loves it out there — all of the attention — he thrives on it.”

We are here to help you start the New Year looking your best!

Hollow Creek Farm, Wellington

Kraut continues to make a name for herself aboard her prestigious mounts at some of the world’s top shows, but she enjoys the luxury of having the Winter Equestrian Festival in her back yard each year. Three out of four of the British gold medalists prepared for the trials and Olympic Games in Wellington last year. Kraut added that she would like to see even more international contenders join the competition, growing the sport for the future.

“If we want to raise our level of the sport, we cannot do it internally. We need to bring the best here,” Kraut said. “Having the best international competitors not only raises my game, but it teaches all the young kids coming up. They get to watch and learn and see different systems and ways of riding. All that learning is going to improve our sport from the bottom up. Not only does it benefit the competition, but also riders and the future.” The Winter Equestrian Festival, the biggest and longest horse show in the world, is host to more than 5,000 horses and 2,800 riders from around the world. As riders gear up for the competition, Kraut looks forward to the 2013 season, when she and her students will use their gained experience to fulfill their utmost potential and cater to the crowds at home. |wellington the magazine| January 2013

Quality Shavings Of South Florida

Company Delivers Locally Grown Horse Bedding By Deborah Welky

Wellington is known internationally for its equestrian community. Attracting the best hunter/jumpers, dressage riders and polo players in the world, its reputation continues to grow. In addition to professional riders, many year-round residents keep horses for recreational use.

grown expressly for the purpose of horse shavings, the company has been in business 25 years.

This has also brought a wide array of local services available to support the equestrian community. Whether you own top equine talent or a horse used for pleasure riding, you know how important it is to keep them wellsupplied with food, water and veterinary care. Equally important is their environment. Many hours are spent keeping a stable clean — and that means fresh, high-quality shavings on the stall floor.

“We are trying to revamp the operation to provide the best-quality bedding possible,” Iadisernia said. “We’re one of the only operations that actually make pine shavings directly for the intention of horse bedding.”

Quality Shavings of South Florida, formerly known as South Florida Shavings, is one of the premier providers of horse bedding in both Palm Beach and Miami-Dade counties. Using nothing but pine trees locally

New co-owners Joseph Iadisernia and Guimer Rodriguez are working to raise the company’s high standards even higher.

When shavings come from other states, Iadisernia said they can include a variety of woods, some of which can be dangerous for animals. With Quality Shavings of South Florida, horse owners know exactly what they’re getting. “This is timber that has been planted for harvest or cut due to land-clearing,” Iadisernia said. “We don’t use anything wild.” Although it delivers horse bedding

throughout the lower peninsula, Quality Shavings of South Florida prefers to focus on the Wellington community, closer to where the trees are grown and the golden-white shavings are made. The company offers everything from kiln-dried 20-pound bags for clients that require a really clean stable, to bulk loads ranging in size from 14 cubic yards up to the 120 cubic yards needed by Wellington’s major equestrian facilities. “We are the only bulk supplier that offers both fresh and kiln-dried shavings,” Iadisernia noted. Being an integral part of the community is also important. “We hire local, make local and deliver local,” Iadisnernia said. “We understand the horse community because we have horses. We understand what owners have to go through to get shavings.” Quality Shavings of South Florida is located at 10191 Lantana Road. For more information, call (561) 433-9955.

Martha W. Jolicoeur

By Deborah Welky

Realtor Brings Expertise In Equestrian Properties If you’re in the market for an equestrian property in the Wellington area, Illustrated Properties Broker Associate Martha W. Jolicoeur, a noted equestrian, can help you find the perfect farm or home to suit your needs. Having grown up in Connecticut and trained with the likes of George Morris (Chef d’Equipe of the United States Equestrian Team) and Ian Millar (Canadian show jumping superstar and ten-time Olympian), Jolicoeur moved to Wellington full-time in 2005.

Putting her equestrian career on hold to devote more time to her clients, Jolicoeur has gone “narrow and deep” by focusing on the needs of her fellow horse lovers. “By keeping my business focused on one particular aspect of Wellington — and because I diligently work at it just as a dedicated athlete concentrates on their sport — I have gained a great deal of knowledge pertaining to the local real estate market,” Jolicoeur said. “Equestrianrelated properties comprise 99 percent of my business — from the owners of top show horses who are looking to buy a farm, to the people who care for and ride those horses, to those who come only for a few months during season and want to enjoy a small house or condo as a vacation home.” Although her business may sound seasonal in nature, it has become a year-round endeavor. In fact, Jolicoeur has become so busy that she added Angela Pappas to her team. “Angela is great,” Jolicoeur said. “She handles a lot of the rentals — especially for season — and also sells a variety of properties both in and out of Wellington. She’s young and quick with the computer, which is important when it comes to moving the properties along. Angela is a rider as well and knows many horse people, which is really helpful.”

Having spent time riding in Europe, many of Jolicoeur’s clients are international equestrians. “Most come here to participate in a particular discipline, and I know what to look for,” she said. “A dressage rider may not necessarily require a property near the Winter Equestrian Festival show grounds, while someone who rides hunters or jumpers might want to be January 2013 |wellington the magazine|

within hacking distance. It is my job to find a property within their budget that fits their exact needs.” If you’re looking for a home outside the traditional equestrian areas, Jolicoeur stands ready to help in that regard as well. “I specialize in farms, but I also sell homes, land and condos within the four corners of Wellington, in addition to a special area in Lake Worth near the Intracoastal, where I have found myself embracing boating and the beach when away from the show grounds,” she said. Because of her love of the sport and equestrian ties, Jolicoeur attends the shows regularly and always visits new properties in the area. “I love seeing different homes and barns and take note of special details that may be of interest to customers in the future,” she said. “It’s what I really enjoy doing. I believe in giving back as well. Therefore, I am one of the sponsors of the Winter Equestrian Festival and the show’s ‘Leading Lady Rider Award’ in memory of my close friend, Dale Lawler, a fellow Realtor and horsewoman.” As an active member of the equestrian community, Jolicoeur holds herself to the highest professional standards. “Our business is a customer service business, and I pride myself on dealing honestly and fairly while doing the best job for my customers, whether they are buying or selling. My relationship continues with them beyond the sale, and that is what is important to me,” she said. “Attention Sciatica and Low Back Pain Sufferers...”

Could One Hour With This Doctor Give You The Answer To Your Disc Pain? An important breakthrough in non-surgical back pain treatment. Before and after MRI studies have shown disc bulges shrink in size - even with the most painful cases L4-L5 & L5-S1 herniations.

If you’ve had disc problems for years, recently injured your back, or you’re suffering with sciatica, you must hear about these new studies. Studies tell us that spinal discs are responsible for most of the aches and pains people suffer from. Discs act like a cushion between our backbones and allow for a space at each level so the nerves can exit the spinal column. When these discs get injured or wear out frombad posture, they begin to degenerate and cause pain. Bulging and herniations begin to form, pressing on the nerve roots. If the herniations occur at L4-L5, they can severely compromise the large sciatica nerve, causing muscle weakness, tingling, and severe pain. The most common invasive treatment for disc herniations is surgery. This costs quite a bit of money. Even with health insurance the patient can receive a bill in excess of $10,000- $15,000, and sometimes more. The recovery time and missed work can be anywhere from 3 to 6 months, not to mention the obvious severe risks associated with all surgery. But here’s the biggest problem... there is a high failure rate of back surgery. Before You Go Under The Knife And Opt For Spinal Surgery... You should seriously consider a less invasive approach called spinal decompression. Non-surgical spinal decompression is an innovative technology that has proven effective in reversing disc herniations. It creates a vacuum effect on the disc, which pulls the disc back into its normal position and brings in a fresh blood supply to promote healing. Do You Have A Disc Problem? If you experience any of the following in your back or neck, chances are your pain is due to a disc bulge, herniation of degeneration: • A vice-like squeezing feeling in your back • Sitting causes back or leg pain • Stabbing pain at the belt line or in your neck • Can’t turn over in bed without hurting • Numbness in your toes or fingers • Fire down your legs • Searing pain radiates into your arm • Prickling in your leg or toes Finally, Some Good News... If you’ve been suffering with back pain or arm/leg pain caused by a disc bulge, disc herniation or squashed or compressed discs. Until recently, the only advice for many of you suffering in pain was to try what you’ve been told

• • • • • • •

Try exercising Try physical therapy Try pain medications Try muscle relaxers Try pain shots Try dangerous back surgery Just live with it

If you’re like most, none of these have worked for you or you are afraid of what could happen if you try some of these. Exercising makes you hurt more, pain medications and muscle relaxers cover up the problem and give you side effects. Pain shots scan cause more pain, don’t work or don’t last very long, or FIX the problem, back surgery didn’t work, or made you worse. Or maybe you were one of the lucky ones that back surgery actually helped, but now the problem is back with a vengeance. Whatever your situation, you owe it to yourself to check into a Breakthrough Computerized NonSurgical Treatment for back pain and sciatic or leg pain caused by a bulging, herniated squashed disc or discs. It has helped hundreds of people who were suffering just like you. This new treatmentmachine is called “the squashed disc machine.” Caution! Decompression is DIFFERENT than old time traction or hanging upside down, or inversion machines which can make your muscles squeeze the discs even harder!

How “Good” Discs become “Bad” Discs Over time the discs in your back tend to get squashed or compressed, especially if you’ve played certain sports when younger or have a job that requires lots of sitting or standing in one place for long periods of time. Car accidents, lifting things, very physical jobs just to name a few. It’s kind of like a cookie with cream filling, and the cream filling will start to ooze out from between the sides of the cookie if pressure is applied on top of the cookie (like gravity on our spines). Eventually this happens to a lot of us. Statistics showover 80% ofAmericanswill sufferwith back pain sometime in their life. Spinal decompression treatments are very gentle. In fact, every once in awhile I even catch patients sleeping during treatments! How Does This Machine Work? Have you ever had the thought... “Gosh, if somebody could just pull me apart...I would feel a whole lot better.” Yeah, we know you have. And it kind of makes a bit of sense. Well someone actually has, a medical manufacturer, back

pain specialists, neurosurgeons and engineers have come up with just that. A machine that gently pulls you apart. Stretches the disc to a certain point that causes a drop in pressure inside the disc (like a little vacuum in the middle of the cream filling) causing the cream filling to suck back in! You’ll simply lie on your stomach or back, whichever is comfortable, and then a specialized belt is gently put around your waist. We’ll set the machine to focus on your problem area – then the advanced decompression computer system will do the rest. Most patients feel better with just a few treatments, and best of all there will be no dangerous drugs, no invasive procedures, and no painful exercises. Does Decompression Really Work? For most patients, absolutely! Here is what our patients say about it. When I came to Dr. Selinger’s office I had severe low back pain and pain downmy right leg. I couldn’t walk without pain. Before coming to Dr. Selinger’s office I had epidurals and physical therapy, nothing was helping. I wasmiserable. Since I have been doing decompression treatments I have improved by at least 80%. Now I can even play golf and tennis. Dr. Selinger and his staff are professional and caring. Thanks. - David C.Wellington, FL “I came to Dr. Selinger with pain in my lower back and had sciatica due to two ‘herniated’ discs, and spinal degeneration. I suffered for years. I tried so many different things but nothing seemed to work. I had to stop playing softball and even had pain when I was fishing. Since I have been doing decompression treatments I have improved by at least 85%. Now that I have been under Dr. Selinger’s care I am playing softball and fishing pain free. I’m more active. I feel great. I love coming here!” - Harold C., LakeWorth, FL I came to Doctor Selinger’s office because I had lower back pain and pain going down into my right hip. I had back surgery in L4/ L5 disc level. I had arthritis in my back. I did not want to go for any other surgery. I was taking medication but nothing seemed to help. The pain was intense. Since coming to Dr. Selinger, my back feels great. And the pain in my right hip is gone. I’ve improved tremendously. I can move, sit and get up out of a chair without being in agony. I can work out and have fun again. My family and friends notice that I can do so much more now. Dr. Selinger and his staff have helped me so much and his staff is very warm and professional. His office is great. Thanks, - Frederick H, Boynton Beach, FL Feel the Improvement – and Say “Yes” to Life Again With my “Decompression Evaluation”

Dr. Ravinder Jarial Specializes In Both Pediatric And Adult Plastic Surgery Story by Ron Bukley  Photo by Robyn Barkley

surgeon repairs the skeletal area that holds it.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Ravinder Jarial recently opened his practice on the campus of Palms West Hospital. While the scope of his work includes adult reconstructive surgery and cosmetic surgery, he also specializes in pediatric reconstructive surgery.

“With the two babies that we did over the summer, we had spina bifida defects, meaning they had open, exposed spinal cord tissue in the lower back, with leaking spinal fluid right when they were born,” Jarial said.

“I think the pediatrics is what sets me apart a bit from the other people in town,” Jarial said. “There’s definitely a need in the community for that.” After studying and practicing in Michigan, Jarial recently moved to the community and established an office in Medical Mall 2 at 13005 Southern Blvd. After graduating from the University of Missouri School of Medicine in 1995, Jarial completed his general surgery residency at Garden City Hospital in Detroit, where he then practiced as a general surgeon from 2001 to 2006. After a residency in plastic surgery at the Henry Ford Health System, he continued his studies with a one-year training fellowship in craniofacial surgery at the St. John Providence Health System, also in the Detroit area. “I finished that in 2011 and started making my way down to Florida,” Jarial said. “I wanted to try something different. I had always been thinking about moving to this area, but the time came in 2011 where all the pieces fit.” Jarial is focusing on craniofacial surgery at Palms West Hospital and St. Mary’s Medical Center, because both offer vibrant pediatric programs. He is active

Before Jarial moved to the area, babies with such issues often went to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. “It’s a rare defect to have, maybe one in every 500,000 kids,” he said. “We had two in Palm Beach County within a month. It was kind of interesting.”

at St. Mary’s working with a pediatric neurosurgeon. “We’ve done some cases together concurrently. I’ve been a little busier there on the pediatric end of things because of the need for tagteaming these cases,” he said, explaining that difficult pediatric cases will generally require a number of medical specialists working together. The need for a craniofacial and neurological team is not uncommon. “They fit together when there is the need for addressing issues with the face or the skull or the spinal column,” he said, adding that the neurosurgeon will tackle the parts that need expertise involving preservation of nerve tissue, while the craniofacial

Jarial also offers the more commonplace procedures, such as face lifts, eyelid surgery, breast augmentation, liposuction and injectables such as Botox. “I’m still in the ramp-up phase of the practice,” he said. “Even though I’ve been here for just under a year, the practice has only been functioning since probably the last six months.” He also does procedures such as skin cancer reconstruction, wound care, breast reductions and removal of benign skin bumps and lumps, and anticipates adding vein surgery to his list of skills in the coming year. Jarial has also been granted staff credentials for Bethesda West Hospital, which is scheduled to open in January. Wanda Smith Recalls Her 29 Years Selling Real Estate In Wellington Story by Deborah Welky  Photo by Abner Pedraza

People who have lived or worked in Wellington for a handful of years often talk about the changes that they have seen. But if you want to know the community from someone who has been here almost since the beginning, you’ll want to talk to Wanda Smith of Re/Max Prestige Realty Wellington. In real estate since 1980, Smith moved here from Daytona Beach in 1984 and has lived and worked here ever since. “Over the past 29 years, I’ve lived in Pinewood Manor, Meadow Wood and now Lakefield South,” Smith said. “The reason I settled in Wellington was because it was the nicest place I’d lived after relocating to 16 different places around the country.” Smith began her career working in a law office doing title searches and closings but soon ventured into real estate. “When I moved from Daytona, my old clients were still calling, saying, ‘We need you!’ — but I couldn’t help them unless they moved to Palm Beach County, which some of them did,” Smith recalled. Today, most of Smith’s work is repeat business from previous satisfied clients, their family or friends. “I do the majority of my work in Wellington,

although I do go out of the area for a personal referral,” she said. Smith specializes in residential sales and listings, just as she has from the very beginning. “I do not do commercial, although I had the opportunity early on,” she said. “Commercial real estate is a totally different game — you work more with numbers. My strength is definitely people.” Smith said the real-estate market this year is definitely better than it has been for years, although finding inventory to sell is difficult. People are sitting tight. When there is a listing, it sells very quickly — and there remains a number of short sales. “We listed a house last Friday, and it went under contract on Monday. The people who bought it didn’t even look at it,” she said. “Investors come in with cash, and if a seller gets multiple offers, most of the time the sellers will take the cash offer. In a way, it’s sad because young families that need financing are being squeezed out.” Smith said she’s still looking for inventory — and for buyers. “People often ask me whether I get more listings or more buyers, but every year it ends up to be almost a 50/50 split,” she said. “It’s pretty consistently about half of each.” Smith and Re/Max have long been involved in the community, whether it’s attending a chamber of commerce meeting or riding on a float in the holiday parade. Now that she has grandchildren, however, Smith has changed her focus a bit. When a grandson was diagnosed with diabetes, she got involved with the Juvenile Diabetes Association’s walkathon; when another joined the Wellington High School band program, she became a sponsor; and she financially supports the Youth for Christ organization. “I’m still involved, but with different things,” she said. To reach Wanda Smith, call (561) 798-5566 or visit the Re/Max Prestige Wellington office at 11924 W. Forest Hill Blvd. in the Wellington Plaza.

wellington volunteer

Wellington resident Lorrie Browne has taken her love of dogs to the extreme with her volunteer work for Big Dog Ranch Rescue. She is shown here with Roxie, Brewster and Gunther.

LORRIE BROWNE

Story by Matthew Auerbach Photos by Abner Pedraza

Her Work With Big Dog Ranch Rescue Has Saved The Lives Of Many Animals Volunteering is a selfless act; you give of your own time to help others. More often than not, public acclaim is not part of the deal. Your dedication is appreciated by those around you and those who benefit from your efforts. Volunteering isn’t about personal glory. Volunteering is about providing hope and help. Lorrie Browne provides hope and help to dogs and dog lovers through her work with Big Dog Ranch Rescue. Her volunteer work has saved the lives of countless animals, and for this reason she is the first nominee for Wellington The Magazine’s Volunteer of the Year Award. Browne has always felt a special closeness with the members of the animal kingdom. “I’ve had a lifelong connection to animals,” she said. “As a kid, I was always rescuing young rabbits, squirrels and birds. But I’ve always felt a special kinship with dogs. They are so trusting and dependent on us. They have so much to give and have an amazing ability to reset and start over. We’ve seen dogs come from the worst of circumstances and once their ‘forever family’ finds them, they leave that all behind and trust their new path will be fine.” One special dog set Browne on the road to volunteerism. “Three years ago, my 12-year-old Weimaraner mix, Emma, passed away,” Browne said. “I was heartbroken and knew that she could not be replaced, but I wanted to have a dog in my life. I love the companionship and taking care of them. It’s such a comforting routine. We adopted our Weimaraner, Roxie, who was in a puppy mill for the first six years of her life being bred. The facility was shutting down, and she was going to be euthanized. She made her way to us through Big Dog Ranch Rescue, and now she is the queen of our home. Every day her sweet face reminds me that there are many more dogs to be saved.”

Browne decided she had to get involved. “After adopting Roxie, I started reading more and more about dog rescue, and it opened up a world to me that I didn’t know much about,” Browne said. “The statistics on how many homeless dogs are euthanized each day were astounding to me. I realized that Big Dog Ranch Rescue could use all the help it could get. I started by leading a fundraiser at Panther Run Elementary School with my niece, Kate. Since then, I have volunteered endless hours at the ranch.” She also spends time online each night, managing Big Dog’s web site, answering questions, making connections, reaching out to the community and finding great homes for dogs. And Browne knows a thing or two about great homes through her work as an interior designer. “I’ve been a permanent resident of Wellington for 18 years,” Browne said. “I moved here from San Francisco where I was a financial analyst to make a major career change and attend the Art Institute in Fort Lauderdale. I started my interior design business, Lorrie Browne Interiors, soon after I graduated and have been here ever since. My husband Tim and I have been married for seven years. He’s my biggest supporter of my work and my passion for dogs. We are a great team.” The Big Dog Ranch Rescue facility is something she’s very proud of. “Our current location at the former Folke Peterson Wildlife Center was originally a wildlife sanctuary,” Browne said. “We have an animal rescue-equipped building and 28 acres and outbuildings that house the dogs. We are so blessed to lease the Folke Peterson property so the dogs have all this room to run and play. Most rescues only dream of the space we have.” Big Dog Ranch Rescue houses approximately |wellington |wellington the the magazine| magazine| January January 2013 2013

Browne credits Wellington residents for much of Big Dog’s success. “Wellington is a wonderful home for BDRR because of the unique aspects of this community and its members,” Browne said. “We have lots of families and retirees who can provide great homes for our dogs. We have the members of the equestrian community who are huge animal lovers. There are so many people in the western communities and beyond who volunteer with us, raising money and dropping off supplies.” That help is essential to the ongoing existence of Big Dog Ranch Rescue. “We don’t receive any funds or assistance from the government,” Browne said. “We are a private nonprofit and depend solely on

donations and grants to run the organization. This year [2012] we are on par to adopt 1,400 dogs. Each one of them gets all the proper medical care and is fed and housed until they find their ‘forever home.’ All adopted dogs are spayed and neutered, have all their shots and are micro-chipped. Our adoption fees only cover a small part of each dog’s care. Last year, it cost us $1 million to run BDRR.” The decision to become a volunteer is a very personal one. Browne’s work at Big Dog Ranch Rescue has allowed her to keep the memory of a departed family member alive. “My uncle Vinnie, a World War II vet, passed away in the spring,” Browne said. “He was a great lover of life and of dogs. As a way to honor him and other veterans and service members, my sister and I started a program at BDRR called Pets for Patriots. Through this

program, we are able to place our dogs in loving homes and improve the well being of service members and their families. We offer discounted adoptions, veterinary support and other benefits. Since July, we have placed 15 dogs in homes through this program.” Browne believes volunteering is a situation in which everybody wins. “Volunteerism is a gift where we simultaneously give to ourselves and others,” she said. “When you volunteer, you learn new things, meet new people and perhaps stretch outside your normal comfort zone. It can be difficult to come face to face with the injustices that exist in our world, but to actually improve the conditions for one living being is life changing. I learn something new every day. It’s a joy and a privilege.” Browne offers advice to would-be

wellington volunteer volunteers. “To be an effective volunteer, you need to remain openminded,” she said. “We can learn so much from those who have been volunteering for years, but we can also bring fresh new ideas and energy. Be genuine, honor your commitments and be willing to learn. Don’t volunteer just to impress others. Don’t assume you know the whole story. Don’t treat volunteering like the last priority on your list that only gets attention when you have nothing else to do.” Browne sees a bright future for Big Dog Ranch Rescue. “My vision for the future is that it becomes a wonderful park-like sanctuary where we save more dogs every year with the hands-on help of our local community,” she said. “I see us becoming a model rescue that shares our knowledge and influence with other people who aim to do the same.”

Stunning Amenities Right Near Show Grounds At Grand Prix Village Story by Lauren Miro Photos courtesy Martha Jolicoeur

This stunning barn located in the elite Grand Prix Village community is an equestrian’s dream, with all the space and amenities of a top-level training facility, all within riding distance to the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. The property is larger than most, with 9 acres of space that includes an all-weather riding arena, a grand prix jumping field with Bermuda grass, a longeing arena, paddocks and barn. The stylish 15-stall barn also boasts an owner’s lounge, manager’s apartment, two staff apartments, plus large tack and feed rooms and indoor and outdoor wash stalls. The entire property is lined with hedges, making it a private, quiet slice of property, removed from the hustle and bustle of the show, but only moments away from the world-class competition.

Beautiful white gates open up to the elegant, manicured landscape of the front entryway. Leading directly to the front of the barn, the gate provides access for owners and guests. Meanwhile, a second, rear entryway leads to the back of the barns, making it the perfect setup to receive deliveries such as feed or shavings.

The stylish owner’s lounge boasts beautiful Mexican tile floors, durable for days at the barn. They are offset by stunning tongue-in-groove wood beam ceilings and picturesque French doors that let in plenty of natural light.

There is plenty of room in the lounge, which is one large great room coupled with a full bath, perfect for relaxing or taking a break from training. A large screened porch overlooks the grand prix arena and all-weather riding arena, giving a great vantage point to monitor training progress or just watch the action.

The lounge offers a full kitchen with plenty of cabinet space, upgraded appliances and a breakfast bar. The space is perfect for cooking quick meals or storing snacks, but is also beautiful and stylish.

The Seahorse Brings ‘Fashion Cuisine’ Concept To The Seafood Domain Story by Lauren Miró Photos by Abner Pedraza

Serving up fresh coastal cuisine plucked straight from the ocean, the new Seahorse Fashion Cuisine opened last month on Forest Hill Blvd. in front of the Mall at Wellington Green. Owners Dustin Parfitt, Juan Gando and Lauren Lam opened the Seahorse as a way to offer fresh, delicious seafood in an upscale environment. It is the third restaurant to join Wellington’s “fashion cuisine” family, along with Oli’s and the Grille. According to the owners, “fashion cuisine” combines cooking with art, for a meal that looks great and tastes better. “It’s Dustin’s passion,” Lam said. “He serves food that is both beautiful and delicious. You eat with your eyes first. People are always taking pictures of great-looking food. The way food looks is as much a part of the eating experience as tasting the food.”

the mood. “It’s an intimate but nice space. It’s great food in a great environment.” A large saltwater tank greets you as you enter, with an array of brightly colored fish. The walls are white, and balanced by deep blue leather booths. There are also several tables in the middle of the room with an eclectic mix of chairs. Rounded mirrors mimic bubbles and dot the walls, while a bubble chandelier pulls your focus to the corner of the room. The floor is covered with elegant but weatheredlooking wood that extends up the opposite wall and bar. The entire room seems as if it’s one big wave, with the booths ebbing and flowing up against the walls lining one side of the room.

At the Seahorse, dining is an experience that begins the moment you walk in the door. The intimate restaurant is true to its name, giving a cool, calming atmosphere that feels as if you’ve drifted beneath the waves.

In fact, everything about the restaurant just flows — from the glasses that are slightly slanted to the decorative grooves in the ceiling. And topping it off is a beautiful mural in the grooves, depicting an underwater scene that makes you feel as if you’re at the bottom of the ocean looking up at a spectacle of sea life.

“At night, the ambiance is awesome,” Lam said, pointing out the cool blue lights that help to set

And while the décor sets the mood, it is topped off by a tasty, authentic seafood dining experience.

wellington table “It’s simple but delicious cooking that really highlights the seafood,” Lam said. “The meal changes with the season, so you’re always getting what’s freshest.” Parfitt describes the food as “coastal cuisine,” offering the best picks from the Atlantic. He also tries to buy locally, getting much of his produce from a farm in Loxahatchee Groves. “Our seafood comes from up and down the East Coast,” he said. “The menu reflects whatever seafood we get fresh.” Parfitt said this makes planning the menu a fun experience reflected in the dining experience. “That’s the best way to cook, letting the ingredients shine through,” he said. “We try not to force it.” For the best example of fresh seafood that sings, try the Tower of Seafood. shrimp, while the bottom is a platter of oysters. The entire meal tastes as if the shellfish have been plucked from the ocean and dropped on your plate. The concept of fashion cuisine is truly highlighted in the Ceviche 105 — a delicious combination of local fish marinated in citrus and coconut milk, topped with sweet potato and served in a coconut shell. The pieces of fish are zesty and delicious, set off perfectly by the sweetness of the coconut milk. It is a flavorful option that will leave you wanting more. For a full meal, try the Hazlenut Crusted Grouper. The fish is cooked to perfection and served with a cauliflower puree and topped with spinach and lemon butter. The combination of the fresh fish, lemony greens and puree sings in your mouth. And to complement your meal, the Seahorse offers an expansive wine list, all stored in a stunning wine cellar.

There is a glass or bottle of wine for all tastes and all price ranges. No matter what you order, and what wine you pair it with, you’re guaranteed a meal that will leave you feeling satisfied but not stuffed, and wishing you could go back for more. “We wanted to bring something to Wellington that would serve the community,” Lam said. “We think this offers something different for residents who are looking for simply delicious food in a great atmosphere.” The Seahorse Fashion Cuisine is located at 10660 W. Forest Hill Blvd. in Wellington Green Square near Fresh Market. For more info., visit www.seahorsefashioncuisine.com or call (561) 791-1616. Partner Lauren Lamb with owner Dustin Parfitt.
