Editor’s Note Definitive Moments Sometimes perspective arrives with a jolt. t was one of those months that seemed to present one conundrum after another. The barn needed serious reconstruction work, thanks to a freak hot water heater incident. Florida’s onset of frigid weather had thrown a kink in everyone’s routines and farm chores. Work was busy, though in a fantastic kind of way, and our team here at Florida Equine Publications was trying to stay healthy enough to ward off the flu. Meanwhile, we were all burning the candle at both ends. Then my cell phone kicked the can and I had trouble recovering my contacts. I forgot a close friend’s birthday. A tree fell on the fence. One of our favorite colts was battling choke, followed by pneumonia, and his recovery was slow, despite the best of care. You’ve been through these things – crazy times where it seems the earth’s axis is tilted a few degrees off? And those myriad distractions don’t even begin to address the compounding struggles of our current, and very great, recession. A few Sunday afternoons ago, following a beautiful HITS Ocala grand prix, I was back at the house, shuffling around, reviewing paperwork and monitoring the sick horse when my phone rang. “I know it’s last minute, but come with us to dinner!” my friend’s familiar voice said. I paused hard. Bit my lip. The kitchen looked like an apothecary with syringes and needles lined up around the sink. I had already counted out little pink and white pills for the horse’s next dosing, and we were sampling three flavors of syrups to make stuff taste better in his oral meds. The vet notes were duct-taped on the cabinet above the sink to make sure I didn’t miss any little detail. My own to-do list was also growing. I really needed to stay home. Then someone who sounded just like me said,

I

“Why not? What a blast – save me a seat!” Two hours later, critters fed and medicated, clean clothes, running late and processing way too many thoughts all at the same time (translate: Summer was not paying attention) I grabbed my purse, jumped in the truck, launched it into reverse, sped out of the driveway and…CRASH! Slammed right into the horse trailer, which (for actual reasons that sound ridiculous in hindsight) was parked sort of catty-cornered behind where I dock my truck every single day. In that millisecond, when tailgate steel jammed against gooseneck steel, everything sharpened into focus. My heartbeat increased to what felt like a billion beats per second, and my internal dialogue went kind of like this: “What! I’m mortified. How bad is it? Did anyone see me? Guess it could have been worse?” And finally, breathe. Sigh, “Now what.” Here’s what. It was a defining moment. A literal roadblock required me to slow down and pay attention, and to think. Changes in markets throughout the past months have caused us all to think. Here at Horse Capital Digest, The Florida Horse and Wire to Wire, we brainstorm every day: How can we best market your horses and services? How can we find new buyers for you? How can we tell your stories to the world? How can we help you sell your products and branding in the greatest way? I hope, when you have ideas to help us continually improve, you’ll let us know. I did go on to dinner that night, and yes, we had a really nice time. I’m laughing about my debacle now, and eventually the truck’s tailgate will somehow get itself removed or replaced. As of this writing, I also think my sick horse is going to make it. But most importantly, I believe — with absolute conviction — we’re all going to make it.

It’s a privilege to journey with you. Summer Best

he HITS Ocala Winter Circuit celebrated its fifth consecutive week of AA-rated competition as Sharn Wordley and Andiamo Pyon, owned by Swept Away Farm, captured the win in March 14’s $50,000 Purina Mills Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health “I don’t know what I did – I just kept kicking!” said an ecstatic Wordley. “He [Andiamo Pyon] went very fast today and I was surprised, because he normally doesn’t go that fast.” Originally from New Zealand, Wordley now lives in Ocala and has been riding 12year-old Andiamo Pyon for just over a year. He rode on the New Zealand Olympic Team in 2008 alongside Sunday’s third place winner, Kirk Webby. “I thought it was a nice galloping course,” Wordley said. “There were a lot of challenging questions out there and I was surprised there was a good amount of us who went clean in the first round.” As families gathered to enjoy the Purina Mills Kid’s Day festivities, the grand prix field was filled with 37 competitors on a course designed by Florencio Hernandez of Mexico City, Mexico, which saw an outstanding 12 horse and rider teams return for the jump-off. Hernandez’s first round track had 13 obstacles, including three combinations, and a time allowed of 91 seconds which was eventually adjusted to 93 seconds after the first few riders went. Canadian Francois Lamontagne and his mount Anton were the first pair to go clean within the time allowed, followed immediately by Taylor McMurtry of Barrington Hills, Ill., on Just An Illusion. Texas’ Tracy Fenney and MTM Farm’s MTM Timon was the next team to go clean in the first round, followed by Kirk Webby of Whitehouse, N.J., on Tolleshunt Investment Group’s Hennessey, Wordley on Andiamo Pyon, David Beisel of Goshen, Ohio, on Harlow Investment Enterprises, LLC’s Patoile, Michael Morrissey of Bradenton, Fla., on Scareberas,

Wins It! and a time allowed of 55 seconds. Lamontagne and his mount Anton got things started in the jump-off and were looking to set the pace with a fast round, but had a rail down on the very last fence for four faults, which eventually settled them into sixth place. Taylor McMurtry and Just An Illusion were next to show and had eight faults which would put them in 12th place. The crowd cheered loudly when Tracy Fenney and MTM Timon posted the first double-clear round and set the Great American Time to Beat at 43.81 seconds. Fenney, who has come up just short of victory several times throughout the circuit, was eager to make her mark at HITS Ocala. “I always take second!” Fenney said. The Texas resident showed both MTM Timon and MTM Centano in the jumpoff. Fenney finished second with MTM Timon, and fifth with MTM Centano. “It was a really exciting day and I think every-

one was excited with how well all the horses were going in the first round,” she said. New Zealand Olympian Kirk Webby on Hennessey followed Fenney and had a clean round in 44.10 seconds, for third place. Next in the irons was Wordley who, eager to beat Fenney’s pace, jumped clean in 43.07 seconds to reset the Great American Time to Beat and become the new leader of the class. Wordley plans to show again in the March 21, $100,000 DeLuca Toyota Tundra Grand Prix, presented by Great American Insurance Group. Of the seven riders remaining in the jump-off, Solem on VDL Torlando was the only pair to go double-clear in 44.82 seconds, which put the current Catena Leading Rider in fourth place. HCD

Highlights at HITS Ocala

ach year, the HITS Ocala winter circuit is a menagerie of accomplished riders and horses – all with unique personalities, stories and varied backgrounds. Stephanie “Stevie” McCarron is no exception. The owner/operator of Cloud Nine Farm in Lexington, Ky., McCarron traveled to HITS Ocala for this year’s entire circuit with six horses, one junior rider and two amateurs. “We choose to be here for HITS Ocala because I think Ocala is better for the horses, in general,” McCarron said. “There’s a lot more land, more space to ride, and more classes. The show is lower-key than Wellington and offers more opportunities for our horses and clients.” McCarron, who is the daughter of Hall of Fame jockey Chris McCarron, is especially proud this circuit of her jumper, Atlantic, a Thoroughbred by leading racing sire Stormy Atlantic. “He’s my highlight,” McCarron said. “Every day he has continued to be a superstar in the jumpers. He’s so secure – goes right in the ring like he knows exactly what he’s doing and has the most amazing brain.” Prior to launching her own training business, McCarron worked for Olympian Anne Kursinski and Karen Healy. Read more about McCarron in the April issue of The Florida Horse magazine.

Leader of the Pack wenty-six competitors battled the rain and challenged Florencio Hernandez’s course March 12 at HITS Ocala. Tracy Magness, who was sixth in the order aboard Tarco Van Ter Moude, posted the first clear round of the day and was the first of seven to advanced to the jump-off. The season’s “battle of the Tracys” continued as Tracy Fenney and MTM Timon, owned by MTM Farms, followed Magness into the jump-off, two rounds later. Fenney also showed MTM Centano to earn another spot in the day’s jump-off. Next to join the group was Callan Solem on VDL Torlando, owned by Torlando Group. Solem won the $50,000 Ring Power Grand Prix, presented by Pfizer Animal Health, the previous Sunday with her long-time partner Allison, and looked to continue her winning streak that has made her one of the most popular riders at HITS Ocala. Kirk Webby on Hennessey, owned by Tolleshunt Investment, was the next rider to go clean, followed by Megan Edrick on Cadence, owned by Procedures, Inc. and Tiffany Tracy Magness on Tarco Van Ter Cornacchio-Morrissey on Moude, owned by Mr. and Mrs. John Caldam D’Or, owned by SCNC Investments Inc., to Bartko, win the March 12, $25,000 round out the jump-off. Behindthe Scenes JOHN JACQUES, OFFICIAL SHOW FARRIER ohn Jacques has been the official farrier of HITS Ocala for 15 years. With almost 45 years of experience, he is the one to trust if a horse pulls a shoe or needs farrier work done at the show. John Jacques also travels to HITS Saugerties and Culpeper. When John isn’t shoeing horses, he enjoys showing his Adult Jumper Quarter Horse, Cruisin’, at HITS. John’s desire to become a farrier is deeply rooted. The Connecticut native said he wanted to become a farrier after his father showed him how to shoe a horse. With all the different needs of a horse’s feet today, John and his farrier team work hard to shoe new horses they have never worked on before. “Every day is research for us,” he said. “We learn more with each horse we shoe.” John has seen a wide variety of horses over the previous weeks of HITS and handles each case with care and precision. He buys manufactured shoes and modifies them to fit the horse’s feet. Sometimes he customizes shoes for the horses that need a very specific shoe in order to perform. “You dream it up, we can make it for you,” he said.

J

From the lead line ponies to grand prix jumpers, any horse can be accommodated for at Team Barber. Common injuries that are assessed include soft tissue injuries and surface lesions. In addition, horses that colic or need joint injections are also treated. “You’re only as good as your weakest link,” Michelle said. “You keep the process smooth when you work as a team.” The team also does pre-purchase exams for interested buyers at HITS Ocala. X-rays, ultrasound, and lameness exams are all available to ensure the prospective buyer is selecting the perfect new horse. “We have had a lot more pre-purchase exams this year. People are starting to buy horses again, and that is a good sign,” Michelle said.

DEVER INC. GOLF CART RETAIL, SALES & SERVICE ever Inc. is owned by Randy Lambert and has been the golf cart rental company for HITS Ocala for many years. Dever Inc. also travels to HITS Thermal, Saugerties and Culpeper.

TEAM BARBER, EQUINE DVM r. Barber, his wife Michelle Barber, and his team have been the official equine veterinarians of HITS Ocala almost since the HITS organization began. Dr. Barber, the main veterinarian at Team Barber has been a DVM since 1983. His practice at HITS and other horse shows has grown to three equine veterinarians and three veterinary technicians. Team Barber provides full veterinary services to everyone at the show if needed. “Robert feels like veterinary care is an investment,” said his wife Michelle. She explained that Dr. Barber believes good maintenance care of a horse will reduce the likelihood of injuries and upsets. “These horses are athletes. We give our horses a job and need to care for them,” Michelle said.

D

At HITS Ocala, rentals can be by the day, week or entire Ocala circuit. “The first three weeks I rented anything that moved,” said customer service associate Kathy Meier. In addition to rentals, Dever Inc. also can do repairs on personal golf carts brought to the show. Vern O’ Neill, known as the former owner of Photography by O’Neill, is in charge of repairs and tune ups. Golf carts should have a tune up at least once a year, and it only takes one day to have tune up done at the show. Repair time can vary depending on if parts are available at the time. If a personal golf cart or scooter runs out of fuel, fuel can also be purchased at Dever Inc. HCD

Florida Thoroughbred Retirement Farm

Situated on 100 grassy acres in northeast Marion County,

The farm is operated in conjunction with the Florida Department of Corrections and Marion Correctional Institution and all the horses are cared for by female inmates from the Lowell Correctional Institute. The women, all non-violent offenders, spend their days learning barn management skills including grooming, feeding, doctoring, and physical therapy and they help teach the horses new disciplines. It’s a symbiotic relationship whereby the horses learn the skills they need to go on to new careers and the inmates learn about teamwork and trust. At the conclusion of the year-long program, having successfully passed 22 written tests covering all aspects of horse care, inmates graduate with a vocational certificate in equine care technology. Upon their release, some of the graduates have gone on to work in the industry as grooms and stable managers. Two famous Florida-bred champions permanently reside at the farm: Carterista, the 1993 Florida Champion Turf Horse and winner of eight stakes races, and Shake You Down, the 2003 Florida Champion Sprinter and winner of nearly $1.5 million.

Meredith Woods Photos

the Florida Thoroughbred Retirement Farm is home to more than 50 Florida-bred ex-racehorses. All of the horses arrive at the farm after their careers on the racetrack are over. Sure, their racing days are behind them, but after rest and retraining, many of the horses at the Florida TRF are ready for adoption. Many go on to enjoy second careers in dressage, trail riding, jumping, pleasure riding and other uses. Even those horses that are not rideable may find adoptive homes as companion animals. As more horses are adopted into new homes, more spaces are available for horses to join the Florida TRF program.

The Florida TRF currently has a waiting list for incoming Thoroughbreds. In order to join the list, the horse should be a Florida-bred Thoroughbred, coming straight from the track. The horse should be retired due to age or physical condition. Contact Florida Thoroughbred Charities for more information at 352-629-2160. A donation is requested along with each horse accepted into the program. Founded in 2001, the farm is supported though the concentrated efforts of Florida Thoroughbred Breeders’ and Owners’ Association, Florida Thoroughbred Charities, Ocala Breeders’Sales Company, Gulfstream Park, Calder Race Course, Tampa Bay Downs, the Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association, the national Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, as well as by many individuals who contribute through donations and fundraising efforts. For more information on adopting a retired Florida-bred racehorse, please contact the FTBOA offices at 352-629-2160. Since 1990 Florida Thoroughbred Charities, the non-profit, charitable arm of the FTBOA has raised more than $3.5 million for a variety of community and Thoroughbred industry causes. Much of the fundraising efforts are made possible due to the support FTBOA and FTC receive from corporate sponsorship. 24 Horse Capital Digest • March 16, 2010

Two famous Florida-bred champions permanently reside at the farm: Carterista, the 1993 Florida Champion Turf Horse and winner of eight stakes races, and Shake You Down, the 2003 Florida Champion Sprinter and winner of nearly $1.5 million.

the Florida Thoroughbred Retirement Farm is home to more than 50 Florida-bred ex-racehorses.
