FLORIDA DESIGN BRAZIL Debuts In Summer 2012 FLORIDA DESIGN BRAZIL, published in Portuguese, will launch in the summer of 2012. As everyone in the Miami metro area knows, Brazil is hot. Brazilians are coming to Florida to buy high-end furnishings, luxury goods and real estate. Responsible for re-energizing our real estate market, Brazilians are purchasing about 50% of the homes sold for over $1 million in the Miami-Dade locale. And with our new magazine, we hope to reach Brazilians before and after they come to South Florida. In 2010, approximately one million Brazilains visited Florida and spent $1.4 billion here. With a strong currency exchange rate and more than 120 non-stop flights a week coming to Florida from key cities in Brazil, this trend is growing significantly. Each issue of FLORIDA DESIGN BRAZIL will feature classic, modern and innovative style that defines South Florida’s and Brazil’s luxury lifestyles. FLORIDA DESIGN brings our readers the finest in interior design, furnishings and luxury goods issue after issue. Through our expansion, we hope to continue this tradition.

WHAT DO YOU WISH F OR? MOST PEOPLE HAVE WISH LISTS WHEN THEY ENVISION THEIR HOMES: “CONTEMPORARY;” “TRADITIONAL;” “FAMILY-FRIENDLY” … THIS HAS MORE INTERIOR DESIGN BY NURY FERIA, DESIGN PERCEPTIONS, INC., MIAMI, FL BUILDER ROBERTO MARTELL, MARTELL CONSTRUCTION, MIAMI, FL LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE BY ORLANDO COMAS, ORLANDO COMAS - LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT, MIAMI, FL TEXT BY MARINA BROWN PHOTOGRAPHY BY DANIELA RODRIGUEZ, MIAMI, FL

ccasionally a wish list will expand its form and functional “must-haves” exponentially.

A case in point: “My client and her husband are Cuban-American ... so a Mediterranean sweep to the exterior was pleasing to them,” interior designer Nury Feria says. “They like Arte Nouveau as well, but with a contemporary line.” And then there is the extended family. “The wife’s parents live with them as well as two 20-something daughters. The husband loves comfortable and easy-care, the wife’s tastes are more elegant ... even adventurous.” Added to the mélange was the challenge of an architect who had fallen ill, leaving to Feria the task of completing architectural and structural components from earlier visions. “It took two years and it wasn’t always easy filling in for the

ailing architect,” says Feria, who was touched by a letter the homeowner wrote describing the designer’s progression from talented interior creator to friend. “And these clients are dear friends now ... together the vision became reality.” Settled on nearly an acre in the Killian section of Miami, the new 12,000-square-foot Spanish Colonial home and guesthouse set an unexpected counterpoint at the front gate. In wrought iron arabesques that could be drawn from a Tiffany bagatelle, the custom-designed fencing, gate and balcony balustrades“… are surprise details that lift the house high above the ordinary,” Feria says.

“I like to avoid carpets in dining rooms,” interior designer Nury Feria says. Instead, a polished marble

cutout is smooth underfoot. Soft leather host chairs from J. Robert Scott and side chairs upholstered in raw silk from Jim Thompson pull up to a massive Lucite table by E.J. Victor to make dining a dramatic opportunity.

From an arched gallery portico and interior entry, the living room and family room open onto the pool, Moorish arcade and wisteria-laden pergola. From either side, soaring two-story turrets lend a fairy-tale feel. In one, a curving stairway, the other is a game area with a 30-foot-high ceiling. The living room is at once ethereal and grounded. Soft, pearlized leather and silk on matching low wingback chairs synchronize with a more robust high-back chair in damask. An organic glass sculpture sits atop a Macassar ebony table that is echoed in the designer-created wenge wood and stone fireplace surround. And with a nod to the owners’ love of elegant glass, Frederico Scipioni’s sculptural window sits between clear-glass doors. Fragile swag draperies and polished limestone flooring continue in the dining room, where a massive Lucite

“Too much stainless and porcelain makes a room lose its

humanity,” Feria says. In the master bath, distressed wood sculptures and an ultra-suede draped ottoman soften and warm, while Calcutta Gold marble walls and flooring add luxury.

Here, the eyes are drawn up to a crystal chandelier that shimmers from an artfully carved, multi-vaulted ceiling. Beneath, an extraordinary Regiano metal panel hemmed with crystal beads backs the peach-silk, kidney-shaped sofa. A curtained gazebo shades a spot for dining alfresco, while behind the outdoor bar, an expansive guest pavilion and exercise studio make a sequestered retreat … perfect for quiet relaxation, family fun or whatever your wish may be.

The main floor of this Bonita Springs, Fla. contemporary masterpiece exudes a warm and welcoming old world charm with its stone and solid wood interior with glaze finish and lalique tops. The Great Room features three living areas which coordinate impressively well with each other: a family room, kitchen with island bar, and breakfast nook. The warm color palette, painted woodwork and plantation-shuttered arched windows continue throughout. Note how LaStrada came up with a creative design to cover a structural beam that divides the kitchen from the family room.

Nearby, Woman in Pearls, an oil on canvas by Ngurah, looks over the dining area, where custom chairs covered in Romo’s silver damask fabric surround the table.

Introduced by a former client and mutual friend, interior designer Steven Zelman proved to be the right match for a new homeowner’s requirement: absolute luxury with top-of-the-line materials and fabrics showcased in a brightly lit yet comfortable setting. To achieve an ultra-contemporary decor, Zelman’s design plan incorporates complex lighting schemes, decorative wall and ceiling treatments, and high-luster materials that play out against silver and white Venetian plaster walls and mirrored white-tile flooring. “Unifying these disparate elements, an intricate lighting plan spotlights common motifs and architectural details, letting the eye follow a cohesive design that starts in the entry foyer and continues throughout the rest of the home,” Zelman says. A first look at Zelman’s elaborate design scheme starts with a mix of lighting concepts and wall treatments that dominate the home. “Recessed lighting throughout the interiors highlights the chrome wall inlays with silver faux finishes,” Zelman says. “We then hand painted Art Nouveau damask patterns in the niches, a design motif also etched onto cut-to-size clear-glass panels individually top lit with high-intensity, low-voltage lights. This light bounces off the angles of the luminous jacquard damask design, giving a sense of dimension.” This same damask pattern graces either side of Seduction, an oil on canvas by Ngurah, that presides in the living area. Here, a large, tufted white-leather sofa provides relaxed seating for guests, while a lit onyx bar is perfect for entertaining. Keeping the focus on lighting,

“Leaving behind the hustle and bustle of a busy professional life, weekends in South Florida are for entertaining friends and smoking an occasional cigar on the terrace,” the designer says of this space, where a comfortable chaise lounge is covered in white outdoor fabric from Sunbrella.

a Venetian plaster cove ceiling is a marvel of ingenuity. “We installed four different graduated rectangular drops to create visual interest and lend depth, while the adjustability provides uninterrupted light flow over a wide surface,” Zelman says of the design. A plethora of high-luster fabrics and glossy materials blend together in the nearby dining and kitchen areas. Zelman custom designed a silver-lacquered base for the dining table and added a sterling silver chandelier to the cove ceiling. In the kitchen, three pendant light fixtures composed of polished nickel and white-frosted glass, a material reproduced on the overhead cabinetry, cast a glow over the space. In contrast to the home’s predominantly white-tile flooring, the private quarters revert to a warmer feel with the introduction of the master bedroom’s wide-planked, Brazilian walnut floor, a hue that continues on the silk border of the lace-patterned draperies. At the owner’s request, Zelman reconfigured two bedrooms into one spacious master suite. A custom-made, frosted-glass sliding door from Bartels leads to the master bath, where a vanity is topped with a lit quartz countertop set over dark wenge-wood cabinetry. The project was completed in seven months, three of which required onsite installation of all the faux finishes, and the end result was startling. “The client walked in exclaiming, ‘wow, this is a showplace,’ and immediately hosted a party,” Zelman says. “My aim in servicing clients is to create interiors that make them smile. In this case, I believe my goal was fully realized.” continued on 90

f this apartment were given leave to set sail, it would surely be the chicest vessel on the high seas.” This closing line of a chapter from interior designer Geoffrey Bradfield’s latest book, Ex Arte, captures the

essence of this spectacular, waterfront penthouse in Key Biscayne, Fla. — a winter retreat for a prominent, art-collecting couple from the Midwest. “South Florida has been a winter escape for these homeowners for many years,” says Bradfield, whose history with the family spans nearly 30 years, including working together on the owners’ primary residence. “This is the second project we have done for them in this location and, coincidently, have also consulted on the interiors for their 150-foot yacht harbored in Miami.” Enticed by its desirable location and 1,500 square feet of wraparound balconies with coastal views overlooking Biscayne Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, the owners purchased the sprawling, 8,000-square-foot unit as finished space and hired Bradfield for the redesign. The designer collaborated with architect Don Goldstein to help reconfigure the home. “Don was instrumental in shaping this space to afford a more open-plan feel and better views, reordering the original plan from five bedrooms to three,” Bradfield says. “We make a perfect team and are currently working on two apartments in Jerusalem for the same client.”

features an abstract wave motif and provides the foundation for the media room’s comfortable yet stylish furnishings. Antique iron and gilt Poillerat tables from Paris and, in the forefront, a bamboo leaf table specially commissioned from artist François-Xavier Lalanne complete the assemblage.

Embracing Bradfield’s signature brand of “functional elegance,” the interiors feature an inspired mix of fine art and antiques with a unique, modern sensibility. For inspiration, the South African designer conjured the idyllic imagery of summers spent off the islands of Sardinia and Capri. This sea-inspired theme celebrates the aerie’s oceanfront locale with a clear sense of place, yet responds to demands for both a glamorous setting and a relaxing, family-friendly environment. “The colors and materials reflect the location — sun drenched, Floridian landscapes and ocean vistas,” Bradfield says. “Here, too, we’re dealing with the fact that it is a family home with adored grandchildren and two beloved dogs.” Just through the entry foyer’s Art Deco glass gates and into the light-filled living room, breathtaking vistas establish the apartment’s signature sea-and-sky palette. The room’s starting point, a custom area rug designed to mimic the undulating motion of whitecaps on a windswept sea, defines the main seating area, where Bradfield’s custom-designed furnishings, all upholstered in either deep blue or bright, cloud white, were deliberately kept low-slung to take advantage of the view.

and a set of 12 original mahogany and ivory chairs by Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann. An adept mix of low-key charm and flat-out glamour prevails once again in the media room, where a composition of relaxed, contemporary pieces, clad in hues of navy blue and butter yellow, coalesces flawlessly with treasured Art Moderne finds. The conversation grouping of sculptural seating choices, including a long, deep-seated sofa paired with a club chair and matching ottoman, echoes the primary tones and linear forms in the room’s focal point painting by Roy Lichtenstein. The home’s luxuriously relaxed style is emblematic of Bradfield’s stellar portfolio of palatial residences, private jets and yachts for clients worldwide. Combining casual beach culture with Art Deco glamour, this vacation retreat above the sea is another beautiful, art-filled yet completely livable environment created by one of the world’s foremost designers. c o n t i n u e d o n 110 108 FLORIDA DESIGN’S MIAMI H&D 7-4

Carl D’Aquino and architect Francine Monaco were confident of nothing less than

a sensational outcome for the Miami project. “Although we have a history to draw upon, each of the homes and apartments that we previously designed were approached uniquely,” D’Aquino says. And falling in love with Miami was by no means difficult with its spectacular oceanfront views that dramatically set the stage for this warm and modern 2,200-square-foot apartment that is abound with natural sunlight. With fundamental clean lines, natural hues and expansive windows, the living area becomes a gateway of relaxation. Reflective and dynamic, creamy limestone floors are implemented throughout the home and used as a background for the unique pieces that are delicately chosen. Inspired by artisan Jean-Michel Frank, the D’Aquino Monaco team custom designed the white sofa and chaise lounge clad in a luscious Rita Twill fabric by Donghia. Far surpassing ordinary, a brass and anigre-wood screen surrounds the sofa to provide definition.

“Everything we selected or designed has a mixture of attitude without any preconceived notions,” the designer comments as he describes the Egyptian revival chairs that are reupholstered and gilded with an intricate carved-wood design. “Our clients fell in love with the original chairs from the Victoria & Albert Museum,” D’Aquino says. Part of the allure of the home is the Art Deco influence, as seen in the custom cocktail table designed with Deco-style glass set atop a gilded base.

In an effort to modulate the sunlight, the design team selected curtains of ripstop, nylon parachute cloth that retracts to allow full ocean views. Artwork strategically suspends from the ceiling to rest gracefully against the curtains — a distinctive application that supports a floating illusion. Nearby, a multi-layered, cut-paper hanging sculpture by artist Sebastian Sanders has become a perpetual conversation piece. Exhilarating ocean views continue through to the dining area, where clean, simple and elegant describes this quintessential banquet setting. Understanding their clients’ style preferences, D’Aquino and Monaco suitably combine two pure crystal Teso tables by Fontana Arte sided by crisp, black-leather chairs to deliver a modern and transparent impression. Upon entering the master bedroom, eyes gravitate towards the mesmerizing headboard — crafted by hand to form its whimsical sculptural shape. Comprised of plaster and finished in gold leaf, “the headboard is a joyful, voluptuous, over-scaled piece that celebrates the room,” the designer says. “It is our personal homage to the history of Miami Beach and the early years of Morris Lapidus hotels of that period.” A splash of classic Art Deco flair is displayed with overstuffed club chairs and matching ottoman that are clothed in a delicious, silky sink-into fabric from Old World Weavers — an indulging experience for the delighted owners. The result: another impeccable outcome by this design duo. “Our work is collaboratively driven and represents our clients’ personalities as well as our own,” D’Aquino says. “The team effort makes all of the difference.”

RIGHT:

The designers put their best foot forward with the use

of both metallic and neutral tones in the master bedroom, where the eccentric allure of the headboard makes an audacious statement. Inquisitive and interpretative describes the paper bag head painting by Sean Mellen that presides over a Lucite chair paired with an occasional table by Eileen Gray.

aybe, in the case of this self-illuminating residence created by interior designer Timothy DuPont, white represents the purity of light. Surfaces where textures can be nuanced and all colors

made possible; where white frames the reflections of sea and sky. Then again, white may just mean “Miami,” says DuPont, who is currently designing another very “serious” New York City residence for the Turkish/Puerto Rican homeowners. “With balconies off of every room, white just wraps around each view of this 3,300-square-foot home, where the couple’s vision was Miami ambiance in abundance.” The condominium, on the 33rd floor of the Continuum in South Beach, is used both as a tropical getaway and for entertaining friends and business associates. “Combining that with two young daughters and their overnight guests … such a pristine palette needed to be indestructible too,” DuPont says. Just inside the foyer, the eyes are drawn to the first of many panoramic views across the wide expanse of the living area. Philippe Starck angular sofa in white leather by Spinneybeck contrast with

the sensuous curves of the beach. Wanting nothing to break the vistas, the owners specified no chandeliers nor obstructing lamps within the rooms. DuPont solved the problem with dropped perimeter lighting and a vertical, multidirectional floor lamp by Arch Fratelli that corners the main living area. Throughout, DuPont decided to take walls and ceilings to bare concrete. The result was gaining a foot of height and allowing natural and reflected light into every corner. The kitchen received an extra dose of illumination with the pillow-like fixture that floats above sleek, polished white cabinetry. Nearby, dining casually at the oval Eero Saarinen table from Knoll is akin to feasting on a cloud ‌ nothing but sunlight between diner and the ocean expanse. An opposing wall backs Naima, a kinetic sculpture by artist Brad Howe. White-on-white takes a softer turn in the master bedroom with the leather wall behind the bed, a matching bench at its foot and a glamorous, but washable, synthetic shag area rug. DuPont created highly polished resin bedside tables with tiny wall sconces to emphasize the dramatic vertical thrusts of the windows.

Just as comfortable with color as its opposite, the designer splashed the guest room with waves of blue, green and gold.

BELOW:

Going with the flow in the childrens’ room, DuPont designed an erasable white-board tabletop so that art could blossom

everywhere. A silver-leather pouf by Genius Jones and a faux sheepskin area rug are both fun and tough.

Because the guest room retains the serenity of simplicity, the touches of color become nearly electric. Peter Lik’s stunning photograph seems to spill its blues onto the bed in the form of twin silk pillows by ThreadCount. And just down the hallway, DuPont could have shied away from a snowy palette in the bedroom shared by the couple’s daughters and their frequent sleepover friends. But instead, he made sure the surfaces were child-friendly and, of course, that some of them were pink. Designing a unique sleeping center to accommodate five, the designer built what one daughter calls her “office” in a bunk across the two twin beds. If needed, the footboards of the beds can be pulled out to make two additional trundles, where a bevy of girls can gossip, try on make-up and drift to sleep watching the sparkling lights of a glittering Miami. c o n t i n u e d o n 128

MAKING IT HIS OWN

A MIAMI BEACH DESIGNER BRINGS WORK HOME, CREATING SENSATIONAL SPACES THAT REFLECT HIS SIGNATURE STYLE AND SATISFY HIS MOST CHALLENGING CLIENT OF ALL … HIMSELF DESIGN BY MARCELO A. FERNANDEZ, HAUS DESIGN, MIAMI BEACH, FL TEXT BY ROBIN HODES PHOTOGRAPHY BY CLAUDIA URIBE, MIAMI, FL

I

t’s been said that love tends to find you when you’re not looking for it. Seemingly, the same concept can apply to discovering the perfect house. Marcelo

Fernandez, an established Miami designer, wasn’t looking for a place to live. He already had a terrific property on Miami Beach, as well as two residences in Buenos Aires from which he hails. But when his partner, landscape artist Juan Carlos Pagan, with whom he collaborates on many of his projects, casually mentioned a house that was for sale two blocks away, Fernandez felt it was worth a look. The next thing he knew, he was signing a contract. “I loved the house the moment I walked in,” Fernandez says. “Aside from the appeal of its close proximity to my office, what I loved best was that I didn’t have to do anything.” Intrigued by the 2,000-square-foot Mediterranean structure’s “good bones” and comfortable flow, Fernandez was lured by the fact that it needed nothing more than a moving van to transport his furniture. Alas, he is a designer at heart, and what started as some strategic plastering turned into a complete renovation. “I knew that once I moved in, I wouldn’t do anything, so it was now or never,” Fernandez says of the home he would not occupy for three more years — but that was just fine by him.

ABOVE AND RIGHT:

An exterior facing a quiet street features a high and mighty pair of royal

palms that tower above the tiled flat roof, while a white picket fence sits sweetly below. Inside the living room, vintage wingback chairs upholstered in Casamance linen sit in perfect complement to B&B Italia’s contemporary, white-velvet sofa.

DESIGNER MARCELO FERNANDEZ ENCOURAGES GUESTS TO FEEL AT HOME HERE — NOTHING IS FUSSY, NOTHING IS OFF-LIMITS. “I’M ALWAYS READY FOR COMPANY TO ARRIVE,” HE MUSES. “THEY CAN BRING THEIR CATS, BRING THEIR DOGS … AND BY THE WAY, THEY DO.”

THE MAKING OF A HOME CONTINUES THROUGH A PAIR OF FRENCH DOORS, WHERE FERNANDEZ OPENS THE KITCHEN USING STRICTLY LIGHT TONES FOR AN IMMACULATE LOOK. “I LOVE A KITCHEN THAT’S CLEAN AND CRISP,” THE DESIGNER SAYS.

Enhanced with black canopies and shutters to add a British Colonial charm, the 1940s structure holds its own in today’s world. Inside, dark terracotta floors are replaced with oak and creamy Italian travertine, while walls are wrapped in white to set a clean backdrop for the designer’s signature traditional modern decor. Ceiling beams are added in grid fashion to create interest in the living room, where an oversized, velvet divan rests backless so as not to obstruct the line of vision. A custom ottoman, clad in cowhide the designer brought back from Argentina, topped by a clear sheet of glass to reveal magazines stacked beneath is his clever solution for a cocktail table. The making of a home continues through a pair of French doors, where Fernandez opens the kitchen using strictly light tones for an immaculate look. Statuario, a classic Italian marble, forms the backsplash in complement to the ultramodern appliances appointing the space.

No environ by Fernandez would be complete without a Fortuny silk chandelier — he uses them in 99% of the homes he designs. While gently lighting the dining room, its elaborate, hand-painted detailing provides refreshing contrast to the sleekness of the remaining furnishings.

In keeping with a monochromatic palette and uncomplicated lines, the dining room features a generous use of white oak, both in the basic rectangular table and a contemporary Maxalto buffet. Stylized chairs are upholstered in flax linen for an organic influence. The painting, by Argentine artist Daniel Bottero, adds a delicate touch of color and warmth. Again sticking to the basics, Fernandez exercises restraint in the master bedroom, where crisp, Sferra bedding from ThreadCount, embroidered with a chocolate brown stripe, covers a low-lying bed. Sisal underfoot adds texture, and overhead, a minimalist fixture by Modern Fan (which Fernandez calls “the simplest fan I ever saw in my life”) keeps its cool as it camouflages with the ceiling. Just outside lies an enchanted garden, where a unique pair of iron candleholders imparts magic, their flicker amplified by magnifying glasses suspended in front of them. Star-shaped bunches of lady palms provide a verdant backdrop to the seating area, and clumped fishtail palms, sprouting three stories high, offer privacy by creating “a screen of green.” continued on 13 8

treated with plantation shutters and breezy linen curtains. Above the bed, a pair of prints from the Rodin Museum adds a subtle Parisian flair. RIGHT:

ith a new addition to their family approaching, time was of the essence for the owners of

this 8,500-square-foot home in Boca Raton, Fla., who chose interior designer Arnold Schulman

for a full makeover of their newly purchased residence in the Long Lake Estates community. “I was trusted implicitly — they allowed me to do what I do best,” says the designer, who transformed the home’s original traditional theme into a classic-contemporary story that promotes ultimate comfort. Continuity partnered with relaxing neutral shades took precedence throughout the home. “I wanted to ensure the look wouldn’t become dated; that it would withstand the test of time,” the designer says. Utilizing his architectural ingenuity in combination with Herculean efforts, a keen sense of style and an insatiable appetite for true sophistication to perpetuate infinite comfort, which is exactly what the owners desired for their new home, Schulman clearly delivers prolific results. WYNWOOD KITCHEN & BAR Innovative cuisine and cutting-edge art combine in one of Miami’s most visually striking restaurants. TEXT BY LAURA LITINSKY

A

cool crowd — artists, art lovers, celebrities and, of course, food aficionados — gather nightly at Wynwood Kitchen & Bar (WKB)

to enjoy the combination of edgy street art and Nuevo Latin cuisine. Opened in 2010 by Jessica Goldman Srebnick and her well-known visionary father, Tony Goldman, C.E.O. of Goldman Properties, this innovative brasserie was an immediate success. Srebnick and Miami-based designer James Samson worked together to plan the 5,000-square-foot, 200-seat restaurant. “When James and I design a space, our first task is to have a clear vision of what the space will look like when completed,” Srebnick says. “It was extremely important to create a restaurant that was visually exciting, had a bold artistic point of view, incorporated industrial design elements, and had a comfortable, energetic and sexy vibe.” WKB, located in a former warehouse, is plastered with street art, inside and out, and sits right in the middle of an art park, Wynwood Walls, developed by Goldman Properties. Murals by twin Brazilian artists Os Gêmeos, the American collaborative artist Dearraindrop and renowned artist Kenny Scharf contribute to the gallery-like ambiance. The patio mural is by Shepard Fairey, known for designing the Barack Obama Hope poster for the 2008 Presidential election. continued on 16 2

The lounge bar top — wrapped in black faux leather — is a good spot to rest a drink while enjoying the phantasmagoric mural of birds, elephants and Moroccan arabesques. Adding to the playfulness of the liquid offerings at the bar is the list of 12 original mixed drinks named for each of the artists that collaborated on the Wynwood Walls and WKB projects. The A-list crowd doesn’t come to WKB only to view art — they also come to dine — and Chef Miguel Aguilar does not disappoint with his innovative, Latin-influenced, contemporary American cuisine. Formerly of Alma de Cuba in Philadelphia, Chef Aguilar uses farm fresh, local and organic ingredients at prices and sizes designed to encourage mix and match dining. Wine and beer enthusiasts will find 20 superb wines by the glass along with a comprehensive, but reasonably priced, wine list, 40 of the best international handcrafted beers and six beers on draft. And to quench a more adventurous palate, single malts, scotch whiskies, vodkas and specialty cocktails are also available. For information, visit www.wynwoodkitchenandbar.com or call 305/722-8959. M
