Two men representing two different cultures clash in the dust of the former Belgian colony, the democratic republic of congo. Loa yang is head of logistics at the chinese railway engineering company. eddy, a congolese man who speaks fluently Mandarin, is his intermediary. They have just set up camp near the remote mining town of Kolwezi. The goal of the company is to relay the road - covering 300km - that connects Kolwezi with the capital of the province Lubumbashi. The congolese government is supposed to deliver the materials, but so far the team hasn’t received anything. Loa yang has no option but to leave the camp and head out to deal with local congolese entrepreneurs, with eddy on his side. The result is an endless, harsh but absurdly funny rollercoaster of negotiations and misunderstandings, as Lao yang gets introduced to the congolese way of dealmaking. director: Bram Van Paesschen Producer: Bart Van Langendonck, savage film running Time: 80’ Language: french, chinese, english www.savagefilm.be saLes cat&docs I catherine Leclef I T +33 1 44 59 63 53 I M +33 6 33 64 86 02 cat@catndocs.com I www.catndocs.com

Printed Matter displays the conflation of private lives and contemporary geopolitics by showing an exquisite selection of contact sheets from the collection of co-director sirah foighel Brutmann’s father andré, who was a freelance press photographer covering two decades of Middle east news for local as well as for international print media. andré’s collection offers on the one hand a visual chronicle of the israeliPalestinian conflict that consists of surprisingly familiar images of civil dissent, armed violence, funeral grief and political speeching, and on the other hand scenes of his family life. instead of using formatted captions, the filmmakers choose for the impromptu off-screen voice comment by the first witness to these histories: hanne foighel, andré’s partner and freelance journalist.

A group of Kuchi children are living in a minefield surrounding Bagram airfield. They dig out antipersonnel mines in order to sell the explosives to child workers mining in a Lapis Lazuli mine. The trajectory of the blue precious stones goes towards Tajikistan and China, through an area controlled by child soldiers. When they are not waging their own mini-wars in the daily madness of life in Afghanistan, the children are fleeing away in their personal fantasies and dreams.
