2011. A la segunda, más y mejor. Los cabezas de cartel Madness y Fatboy Slim, dos artistas ya con nombre propio en la historia de la música moderna, agrandarán el Mallorca Rocks este verano. Tras una primera edición exitosa pero con una programación ajustada a cuatro actuaciones –normal, era la prueba de fuego en Magaluf de un importado Ibiza Rocks–, el ciclo repite en la isla con 17 conciertos que se programarán entre el 31 de mayo y el 21 de septiembre. Un mismo cartel para dos eventos musicales gemelos que, como se anunció el año pasado tras el concierto de The Kooks, se igualan este verano en las dos islas. Mallorca –“por motivos logísticos”, apuntan desde la organización–será el primer destin0 de las bandas, que aterrizarán en Magaluf los martes. Al día siguiente, lo harán en Eivissa. Fatboy Slim, gigante de la música de baile a nivel mundial y cuyas revienta-estadios de los noventa, es el as de la presente edición junto a la banda Madness. Su turno será el 21 de junio, con Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs de teloneros. Norman Cook, ex bajista de los muy reivindicados The Housemartins, encarnó un inesperado reciclaje en la década de los noventa como uno de los djs fundacionales en la mezcla perfecta de música bailable y calidad.

Igual de esperada será la cita del 13 de septiembre, cuando Madness, la legendaria banda de ska y pop formada en 1976 en Camden y liderada por el carismático Suggs, suba al escenario y actúe frente a 2.500 personas, el aforo del rebautizado Mallorca Rocks Hotel. Autores de éxitos universales como Our house, It must be loveo One step beyond, se disolque en los últimos años han protagonizado varias reapariciones (con formaciones siempre cambiantes) que han recogido excelentes críticas zando así su popularidad. The Week Ahead…

29 JUN 11 - 05 JUL 11 15 high speakers, Cook jumped up and punched the air… and everyone in the audience quickly realised that they were in for a very special night. For the next two hours or so, the 3,000 capacity crowd inside the Ibiza Rocks Hotel were treated to a non-stop barrage of party tunes and dance anthems - like Fatboy himself, the music was terrifically playful and funky - a relentless big-beat stomp that never once sounded commercial or frenzied. Throughout his set, Fatboy dominated the stage like a true master of his trade, always demanding attention from the young and cheering audience, all of whom, I could see, felt as if they were part of the show. Rather than dictating to his flock, Cook prefers to pamper his followers with musical messages that are uncomplicated and effortlessly easy to understand, and this, I think, is one of the reasons you get such a good party atmosphere wherever he goes. While some superstar DJs take themselves extraordinarily seriously, Cook emits an air of approachability that works to draw his audiences toward him. As one toplevel DJ once told me, “...before you can tear a crowd to pieces, first you have to relax them…” All of which is true, because without the entire crew on-board, no vessel can properly sail off into the mystic, and Cook, more than anyone else on the modern DJ circuit, seems to have a handle on these recurrent performance truths. Until the Fatboy Slim gig, I hadn't quite got to grips with the Ibiza Rocks brand. Its ethos had somehow passed me by and I was struggling to fully absorb the philosophy of the place. I missed the Plan B party - which everyone told me was a fantastic night - and when I arrived for the Wombats concert, I'd only recently spoiled my dinner and thus my mood was pitched at a rather rotten angle. But on Wednesday night, everything came together and I finally saw with my own wide eyes that the Ibiza Rocks brand does, after all, have a huge thumping heart and an especially emotive soul… and is, without doubt, one of the foremost musical venues on the island.

INTERVIEW WITH SEAN BROSNAN Sean Brosnan is one of the leading pioneers behind today's electronic disco movement and the man responsible for the hugely successful compilation brand, Future Disco. Let's talk to him about Ibiza and his favourite nu-Balearic sounds. Hello Sean. Can you remember your first visit to Ibiza? The very first time I visited Ibiza was with my parents when I was young, but I have been coming back pretty much ever since. One year when I was with my family, as a teenager I managed to get away at night. With my brother we went to some of the islands clubs and they blew me away. The size of Privilege, the music in Amnesia, and the fact that water was pumped into the dancefloor of Es Paradis it was all quite crazy when I grew up in a pretty rural town in England. How long have you been DJing in Ibiza? I spent a season in Ibiza about 12 years ago now and that was the first time I played on the island in some of the bars. Then about five years ago I played Space a few times and I've really been playing on and off at Space for different nights ever since. It's a great club to work with. What makes Ibiza so special? So many things are special about Ibiza.
