OCTOBER Growers, Grocers & Gefilte Fish Members Only Exhibit Opening Monday, October 14, 6 p.m. Join us for this members only event unveiling the exhibit that looks at Florida Jews in the food industry. From the “King of Citrus” and groves three times the size of Manhattan to Sheldon’s Drugstore, where Isaac Bashevis Singer was eating breakfast when he learned he won the Nobel Prize, this exhibit will highlight farmers, distributors and restaurateurs of Florida! Whether you’re from the Sunshine State or not, Growers, Grocers & Gefilte Fish is sure to stir up nostalgia of yesteryear. Opening reception sponsored by Congregation Beth Jacob and Morris & Rhoda Levitt & Families. Cost: Free for museum members at the $125 level and above. All other museum members, $18 per person.

JMOF-FIU Annual Meeting Sunday, October 20, 10 a.m. This is the time for all Museum members to come learn of the Museum’s progress and challenges, install our leadership and pay tribute to our volunteers. Executive Director & Chief Curator Jo Ann Arnowitz will present a review of 2012-13 highlights and exciting plans for the coming year. Breakfast will be served @$20/person. RSVP by October 16.

Vocal Arts Series: FIU Opera Workshop; Kurt Weill: An Exile on Broadway Tuesday, October 22, 7:30 p.m. The FIU Opera Workshop will offer an evening of songs and scenes from opera and musical theatre works by Kurt Weill, tracing his exile from Nazi Germany, to London, then Paris, and finally to New York. Along the way, he composed some of the most compelling musical theatre works of the early 20th century. Selections will be performed in English, German and French, and directed by Prof. Robert B. Professional Development Workshop for Educators Friday, October 25, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Based on the Growers, Grocers and Gefilte Fish exhibit, this workshop will provide instructional materials and methodology for educators to examine how ethnic food traditions help shape both individuals and their communities. Workshop fee: $15, includes materials (7) Master Plan Points for Miami Dade County Public School Teachers upon attendance and completion of follow up assignment.

Divine Food Exclusive Screening Sunday, October 27, 2 p.m. To complement Growers, Grocers & Gefilte Fish, Miami Jewish Film Festival and JMOF-FIU co-present the acclaimed film Divine Food. Making classic delicacies that please taste buds and divine providence has been the business of the Oscherwitz family for more than a century. A mouthwatering look at the kosher meats for which the family is famous, Divine Food: 100 Years in the Kosher Delicatessen Trade shares the story of Issac Oscherwitz’s rise from immigrant butcher to patriarch of a kosher food mega-corporation that still feeds Jews across America. “To Capture the Fire: The Life and Works of Elie Wiesel” with Dr. Alan Rosen Thursday, October 31, 7 p.m. In over fifty books, Elie Wiesel has endeavored to counter the enveloping fire of the Holocaust with the visionary fire of the Jewish tradition. This lecture, by Dr. Alan Rosen, International School for Holocaust Studies, Yad Vashem, will explore his teaching on becoming a “soul on fire.” Alan Rosen is coeditor of Elie Wiesel: Jewish, Literary, and Moral Perspectives and author of Sounds of Defiance: The Holocaust, Multilingualism, and the Problem of English

NOVEMBER Jewish Without Brisket: Vegan Cooking Demo with Ellen Kanner Sunday, November 3, 2 pm Join Ellen Kanner, award-winning food writer and author of Feeding the Hungry Ghost: Life, Faith and What to Eat for Dinner, for delicious vegan recipes with Jewish roots that you can bring to the table this holiday season. A fourth-generation Floridian and McClatchy syndicated columnist the Edgy Veggie, Ellen will show you how to use fresh, seasonal produce to create a holiday meal to delight body and soul — hold the brisket. From intermarriage to children to views on Israel, 18 women tell their deeply personal stories that tap a collective nerve. Cost: Free for museum members at the $125 level and above. Two Who Dared: The Sharps’ War Documentary Film & Discussion Thursday, November 7, 7 p.m. This film tells the dramatic story of Unitarian minister Waitstill Sharp and his wife Martha’s courageous mission to rescue Jews in Nazi Europe during World War II.
