or the past 30 some years Deona and I have been doing both the Miami and Fort Lauderdale International Boat Shows. It’s the place you can go to see all the latest products in one place, but it’s also the place to see old friends and meet new ones. It never changes. At the Miami show many boat companies have their new and popular models in-water to test ride and many of our sponsored members pay their sponsors back by running the boats. They have been credited for closing many sales. I enjoy the show because I get to see so many friends and we don’t have to travel to see many of our sponsors. This year like last, many SKA members were there walking the show. I can’t tell you how important this is. Contender again sponsored a party on Thursday night at a local restaurant and attended by industry, media executives, and of course Contender owners. They were celebrating their 30th anniversary. Congratulations to them! I got a call at the show from Jimmy Donofrio from

the RFA. Congressman Steve Southerland was coming to the show Friday afternoon, but he couldn’t get there because of the snowstorm. So Deona and I, plus Captain Harry’s Fishing Supply’s Karl Liederman, were recruited to show the Congressman around the show and talk to industry executives, then get him to the Viking Yachts display by 6:30 for a planned fundraiser. I think you know that Southerland is fighting the fight in Washington on our behalf. He’s on the Natural Resources Committee and working on reforming Magnuson. I have been very critical with many who earn their living in our industry and do nothing to help solve our ocean closure issues. It was very interesting when we visited the Yamaha booth to see Phil Dyskow, the retired President of Yamaha, who is at the forefront of fishery management issues. He and the Congressman shared ideas and vowed to stay in touch. I can’t tell you how impressed I was with Phil. Instead of enjoying his retire-

ment he’s dug into issues that affect every one of us. He is also on the National Boating Safety Advisory Council. Southerland is up for reelection this year and will be in the fight of his life. He certainly is a top target of the environmentalists who want him out. We will be doing a fundraiser for him soon. Speaking of elections, I’m sure you understand that the environmental movement took giant strides in the Pacific. From there they moved to the Gulf where the stakes are extremely high. Once they get all they can get be assured the Atlantic is next. You need to know where your Congressman and Senators stand on issues that affect us! Finally, it was great to see so much new product, from electronics to boats and gear. The marine industry is alive and well and a lot of new boats were sold. Thanks to all who came out and supported our sport. Tight lines! —Jack

TITANIUM BAIT RIGS Capt. Stanman’s Way Multi-strand wire that won’t kink and can be tied in knots! Are you kidding me? ■ by Gary Caputi

If

you fish the SKA you’ve probably run across Stan Jarusinski, a.k.a. Captain Stanman, at one tournament or another. Originally from Pennsylvania, he started fishing SKA tournaments after he settled in North Carolina. More recently he claimed Port St. Lucie, Florida as his home base, where the warm weather is easier on the bones. You see Stan is probably the oldest active competition member on the SKA tournament trail at age 77, but you’d be hard pressed to guess his age when you see him. He’s lean, strong, sharp and a gentleman to the core. He works out at a nearby Gold’s Gym four days a week and maintains a schedule that would challenge someone half his age. He runs a charter fishing business, maintains an active fishing website (www.captainstanman. us) and writes highly instructive articles available on his website. He loves teaching people, especially young people, how to fish and competes regularly in the SKA Small and Open Boat Classes wearing his bright blue Yamaha uniform. Stan has been fishing the SKA since 1998 and his credits include taking home the 2005 SKA Small Boat National Championship and a second place finish in 2008. He was named the SKA Sportsman of the Year in 2004 and was inducted into the SKA Hall of Fame in 2005. He also serves as the director of the Onslow Bay Open King Mackerel Tournament 6

which has raised over $225,000 for children’s charities during his tenure. He is a member of the Recreational Fishing Alliance and has volunteered to help on a number of issues including at the Buccaneer Cup Sailfish Tournament in WPB, FL, which benefits the RFA. One of the things I love about Stan is his willingness to help his fellow fishermen. They might be the competition during tournaments, but they are all pretty much family in his eyes and you help family. I don’t think anyone who ever asked him a question about fishing did leave without an honest and in depth answer. If you want to see some of his cutting edge rigs with step by step instructions along with more political and educational ruminations go to his website forum and click on “Library.” It is aptly named. Stanman is a tinkerer or maybe innovator would be a better choice of words. When he encounters a problem the wheels start spinning and he will work at it until he comes up with a viable solution. I featured three of his innovative rigs in a feature in Angler Magazine back in 2011. At the Nationals in Biloxi last November we hooked up for lunch on one of the days that fishing was scrubbed due to high winds and big seas to talk about SKA, RFA and to check out a rig that he wanted to show me. We met at the restaurant at Bay Point Marina and after breaking

bread headed outside to where we found a picnic table in the warm sun on the lee side of the building. When I asked if I could get him to run through the rig step by step for the magazine he graciously agreed. “It’s not a big secret,” he said, “just something I’ve been using for a little while that really ups my hook ratio and reduces the number of fish lost compared to fishing stainless.” One of Stan’s sponsors is AFW/ Hi-Seas and the AFW in the name stands for American Fishing Wire. Their Tooth-Proof singlestrand stainless steel wire has been a staple for building kingfish rigs since the SKA came into being and remains the go-to rigging wire even today. A few years

back the company introduced Titanium Tooth-Proof singlestrand wire, which has managed to stay under the radar screen for some time due to its higher cost. Then they introduced Titanium Surf Strand 1X7, super thin braided titanium which takes rig material into a whole new dimension. Ah, but who needs multi-strand titanium when single-strand stainless works just fine… or does it? The problem with single-strand stainless, even the very best like the AFW Tooth-Proof, is that it can be bent and kinked and kinks create weak spots. Stop and think. Just how many times do you get to reuse a bait rig made from stainless for more than one

fish in a tournament situation? Kings tend to mangle pretty much everything that comes in contact with their choppers, that’s why we use wire in the first place, and once you unhook one fish the stainless wire is more likely than not to have a kink or two in it. The $64 question is, “Do you want to leave it on your line and take the chance that it might break on the next fish?” That next fish just might be the one you need to move up on the leaderboard or it could even be a tournament winner! The wire will probably hold, right? Bull! I’ve seen tournament winning fish lost to broken wire more than once and I only ride along on tournament boats from time to time. Once it happened in slow motion right before my eyes when a massive king skied with the prop wash bait crossways in its mouth and you could see the wire kink in its teeth. As soon as it hit the water and turned to run the wire went “bink” and the fish was gone! You guys are out there regularly and it is a constant concern always somewhere in the back of your head when you hook a smoker. AFW introduced Titanium Surf Strand as an answer to the “kink and bink” problem and for some rigs it is the perfect answer. The

stuff is thinner so it’s harder to see. It actually has a modicum of stretch that helps with hook sets. And it doesn’t kink so it doesn’t develop weak spots so you can use a well-constructed rig over and over, fish after fish. Stan showed me a one of example of the rig to follow that had caught countless fish and the wire looked as good as it did when it came out of the package and that means the higher cost is mitigated by the product’s longevity. Here’s how to make a titanium 1X7 triple hook rig. It can be constructed to work with a variety of baitfish depending on how you size it. I’ve seen it in action with large blue runners and mullet, baits that kingfish can slice and dice with impunity without a center hook, and it’s a champ. Scale it up or down, skip the middle hook for small baits, it is very versatile. See materials and method below... Gary Caputi is an award-winning outdoor writer and photographer whose work has been featured in national fishing and boating magazines for over 30 years. He is an avid saltwater angler and recreational fishing activist who has been involved in conservation and fisheries management issues for almost as long as he has been writing. His work has appeared regularly in Angler magazine since 2001.

Stanman’s Titanium Bait Rigs Materials: AFW/Hi-Seas Titanium Surf Strand 1X7 (30-lb or 40-lb test) Gamakatsu 18411R ringed live bait hook black (2/0 - 4/0 to match bait size) Gamakatsu Black 4X Treble Hooks (Size 6, 4 and 2 to match bait size) SPRO Power Swivels (Size 10 or 8 depending on wire test used)

Method: Cut a long length of titanium wire. Length depends on bait size and personal preference. The first thing you do is snell the stinger treble hook. Start by passing a short length of wire through the eye of the hook and back down along the shaft toward the bends. Using the long end of the wire make five wraps starting closest to the eye and wrapping toward the bends holding them tight against the hook with the thumb and pointer finger of your free hand. Pass the long tag end through the eye of the hook as shown and pull it tight. Mark the location of the center hook and tie it using the same modified snell knot. It’s simple, just check out the close up of the way it looks and that’s how it’s tied. Moving forward, mark where you want the nose hook and then pass the wire through the ring twice to create a loop. Finish the connection by passing the tag end through the loop three times. Snug it up and the hook will be locked in place. The last step is to tie on the Power Swivel using a McLean knot, which is a modified Figure 8 knot. Pass the wire through the swivel and lay the tag end alongside the standing leg and wrap it twice. Then pass the tag end through the loop you just created and snug it tight. Note: Knots in titanium 1X7 will appear loose to the eye, but they don’t slip or come undone. That’s all there is to it. Simple materials, simple knots, but the finished rig is tougher than anything you can make using stainless steel. ■ March 2014 | ANGLER

Team Money Shot

of Jacksonville, Florida wanted a fishing boat for fun fishing and SKA competitions. “We looked at new and used boats but, as you know, they have gotten very expensive,” explained Marc Hardesty one of the Boat owners. “I thought we could find a good used boat for a lot less money. I never thought we would or could take a salvaged boat and make her our dream boat.” Here’s the story… The boat was sitting in a salvage yard for more than 18 months after it was involved in an accident in which the boat came off the trailer, slid down an interstate embankment, then hit a highway sign. The impact ripped the entire console and leaning post out of the boat and ripped the deck off the hull, however the hull remained structurally sound. The engines were also significantly damaged. The team replaced the console and leaning post, installed a hard top, all new wiring, lights, full curtains, new

The Money Shot team finished the electronics off with a bone shaking Fusion stereo system and color changeable LED rope lights under the gunnels and inside the

console. and rod holders were installed throughout the boat along with Rule pumps, replacement of all fixtures and hoses, and rigging and electrical wiring. Scott Sullivan, a good friend to the owners and crew, provided a large building to keep the boat in while the rework was in progress. The complete rework was done by the owners and crew of the Money Shot: Marc Hardesty, Clinton Thompson, Marshall Adkison, owners plus crew members Jeff Croxton, Billy Crabtree, and Kevin Dix. The project, while arduous, was also a lot of fun since everyone lives in the same Little Marsh Island neighborhood just down the road from the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish tournament site. The team began work in October 2012 and launched the Money Shot in late May 2013 just in time to fish the Division 5 tournament trail. The team qualified for and fished the Biloxi Nationals finishing 16th and, of course, one place out of the

money. As Clint Thompson said, “This is what makes the Money Shot—good friends working together.” Following is the summary of the marine survey done by Bill Gladding after they finished the boat in June: “Subject vessel was found to be in overall above average condition. It has late model outboards and has been completely rebuilt from its bare hull with all new electrical, equipment and electronics. The 1999 hull, all new equipment, 2009 engines and 2012 trailer blend together to form a vessel younger than the year of its hull. Based upon the experience of the undersigned it is reasonable to compare market data for vessels that match the engine age of the subject vessel. Pricing guides also offer values that take into account some of the variables of the various

components used to rebuild and refit the vessel. Based upon the preceding it is the opinion of the undersigned the following values should apply: Market value: $97,500 Replacement cost:

$195,000 (surveyor’s estimate)” A great story, Marc. There’s something sad about seeing a crippled Contender in a salvage yard. They were made to fish and give the owner years of enjoy-

ment. Thanks for the story and thanks for the insight to take on the project. I know she won’t let you down, and a tournament victory is on the horizon. ■

In today’s economy, which many forecasters are saying is on the rise, potential marine related sponsors are well schooled on exactly what SKA fishing teams will benefit from their cash, or product sponsorship. Typically at the beginning of the Southern Kingfish Association tournament season I have penned an article on how SKA fishing teams will have their very best opportunity on becoming a tournament sponsored fishing team. One of my past sponsor tips included Yulee, Florida’s Kenny Crawford who traveled to the Daytona 500 speedway and wrote down every sponsor’s name that appeared on their race cars. “I figured if a manufacturer was willing to sponsor a race car, they might also sponsor our Crawfish SKA tournament fishing team,” Kenny Crawford said. “The SKA tournament series is much like the NASCAR series where teams compete all year round then showcase their team fishing skills at the annual SKA National Championship, which is much like the Daytona 500.” Through the many SKA fishing tournament seasons, the one tactic for catching a sponsor that has worked time and time again has been showcasing your fishing team on television or in a major magazine. Without a doubt, when your fishing team is featured on TV, or in a major magazine, literally thousands of fishermen will be able to see you fishing on the

water with your fishing gear, fishing boat, and motors. A television fishing show that my son Terry David Lacoss did with Peter Miller’s Bass 2 Bills was voted the best sports show for that weekend and was showcased on NBC sports. The same episode was then showcased on YouTube. Several of our team Amelia Angler sponsors saw the show which ultimately proved that we were still working hard to promote our sponsors. Rob Lupola’s Strike Two fishing team has certainly enjoyed excellent success on the kingfish tournament trail during past tournament seasons. Major accomplishments include first place in the Small Boat Class during 2011 SKA National Championship and backto-back SKA Team of the Year– Small Boat Class in 2012 and 2013. Team members include Rob Lupola, Bobby Schoenfeld, Jeff Hall, Ray Martinez, and Ken Odom. “Our major sponsors include Onslow Bay, Cannon downrig-

gers, Raymarine, and Mercury Marine,” team Captain Rob Lupola said. “We know that it takes more than just winning a high dollar Southern Kingfish Association tournament to secure team sponsorship. With this in mind, our tournament team actually works for our sponsors by being present at major boat shows, like the Miami Boat Show. While there we will wear our SKA tournament fishing shirts that showcase all of our sponsors and literally spend valuable time at our sponsor booths.” “When a potential product buyer visits one of our sponsor’s displays, we are available to give them first-hand experiences and knowledge concerning that particular product. More importantly we will also tell the customer how we have used that particular product to catch more and larger king mackerel. And in many cases we will also be able to show the customer how they can best use the product to improve

their fishing success not only for king mackerel but for many other species of game fish.” Being on hand and in person at a major boat show or fishing event is also an excellent time for fishing teams to communicate in person with their sponsors as well. “We also take this a step further in being on hand when local marine dealers have a function that will help sell their products as well,” Rob Lupola said. “It is important to support local dealers so they will also be able to better sell their products with our personal support. Our SKA fishing team participates in local dealer shows and functions as well. At the end of each tournament season local dealers will then communicate with our major product sponsors and hopefully recommend their continued sponsorship of our fishing team.” If you are wondering how Rob Lupola came up with his team name Strike Two, it took two fishing boats and several unsuccessful fishing trips. “I had purchased two kingfish boats that just did not work out,” Rob Lupola said. “I finally was convinced that the 23-foot Onslow Bay was the perfect kingfish boat and named my new kingfish boat Strike Two. Obviously, another strike and our fishing team would have struck Top: Wrapping your boat and tow vehicle gives your sponsors added visibility. out; instead our new Onslow Bay helped us in hitting a home run!” Once again you have to be in the right place at the right time in order to be showcased on a television fishing show. Simply said it is nearly impossible for every sponsored SKA kingfish team to appear on a widely viewed TV fishing show. With this in mind, the next best way to secure team sponsorship is to first of all become a successful fishing team. This simply does not happen by fishing just one or two SKA

tournaments each year. If you are sincere about securing team sponsorship, you will need to compete in every one of your divisional SKA tournaments. Once you have qualified for the SKA National Championship, make sure to showcase your team at the championship where you will be able to make your presence with major sponsors. I can’t think of a better time of year to meet your team’s sponsors and more importantly, potential sponsors as well!

2011 Team Strike Two: Captain Rob Lupola, Ken Odum, Ray Martinez, Jason Spratley, and Mike Henley. Team Strike Two is a highly sponsored kingfish team.

Keep in mind that the SKA National Championship is typically held at the end of the fishing season where major sponsors will showcase their products at the tournament site. Marine related sponsors will also be showcasing some of their new products for the coming fishing season and your presence and ideas will be greatly appreciated. Sponsorships may start by simply receiving the sponsor’s e-mail address for future communication or being able to purchase a discounted product. The important thing is not to go for a home run, let the sponsor dictate at what level they are willing to sponsor your fishing team. As your relationship with your sponsor grows, so will your sponsorship. Jacksonville, Florida’s Dave Workman, Jr. is a prime example on how to work well with sponsors. During the beginning of his kingfish career, Dave not only won kingfish tournaments, he was also able to develop an excellent working relationship

www.FishSKA.com

with his sponsors. Today Dave’s outstanding success has led to one of best outdoor stores in the country where his Strike Zone fishing team and store showcases literally the best boating and fishing gear as well. Finally, showcasing your SKA fishing team at the SKA National Championship will net only positive results for your sponsors who will soon be renewing their sponsored teams for the coming SKA tournament season. If your SKA team qualifies, be sure and wear your fishing shirts that showcase your team sponsors. Also be sure and make an appearance at each and every SKA tournament that you fish with your team members and logo fishing shirts at the weigh-in site. Weighing even the smallest kingfish of the tournament at the highly visible tournament podium gives both your team and sponsors valuable visibility. you showed up in Key West for Lee Murray’s 18th annual event, you know what I’m talking about when I say that this event ranks certainly in the top five in the 24-year history of the SKA. You needed a heavy bag if you were going to earn accolades in this event. March 2014 | ANGLER

Steve Squires, Lynwood Riggs, and Billy Delph are the members on the team.

The two-day event, sponsored and hosted by the new Stock Island Marina Village, was certainly the perfect backdrop for such a special event. On day one, Saturday, the 60-boat fleet was checked out at 6:45am from the Stock Island Marina Village’s new fuel dock. Teams were met with two- to four-foot seas but diminishing winds and seas as the day progressed. On Sunday morning winds were light and made the day perfect—something we haven’t seen for some time in Key West. You could run anywhere you wanted but the Banana Bar attracted many teams. Some ran even farther with no luck. After seeing a super 58.01 hit the scales Saturday shortly after the scales opened at 3 o’clock by

the Miss Ivory followed a couple of minutes later by Unlimited Tito’s 58.90, we knew that this was going to be a super event and we were right. We knew that it would not end till the last fish was weighed on Sunday. Steve Squires and Lynwood Riggs from Kinston, North Carolina teamed with Billy Delph from Key West to win the event with a spectacular 70.68. You’ll remember Billy when he scaled a 71.89-pound king in the Naples, Florida tournament back in 2004. He held the big fish honors until ’09 when the McMullans surpassed that record in the National Championship in Biloxi with the current record of 74.10 pounds. They fished on a 40-foot Yamaha powered Sea Hunter. “We caught that very special

fish on Sunday, the second day of the event,” Steve began his explanation of the tournament. “We actually fished further west on the first day but figured out that the Banana Bar was the place to be. We had a 48 already in the box when the fish skied on the big blue runner. There were other teams in the area and one called us to say they saw the fish and that we had a really big fish on. I took my time with her but when she came over the gunwale we knew she was a very special fish,” Steve explained to me. “I knew she was in the high 60s but didn’t think she was a 70. But I did know she was a very special fish!” He went on to say that Billy has taught him a lot, but first and foremost they fish differently here 19

in the Keys compared to North Carolina. Billy always tries to fish the biggest baits he can find and they’re fresh and he trolls faster than I do. Our baits back home just aren’t as big so we troll differently. He pays so much attention to detail from jigging to keeping the baits fresh. At the awards ceremony Lee Murray presented the team with the keys to a new 18’ Evinrude powered Release boat complete with a Continental trailer for their win. Jason Johnson and Craig and Chandler Peden scaled a great 58.01 on the event’s first day only to have Tito’s come in right behind them with a 58.90. Obviously they were disappointed but day two was still ahead. The Mercury powered Sea Vee team from Fort Myers, Florida went out and bagged a super 60.21 on Sunday to earn second place overall. “It was between 10:30 and 11:00. We were letting the bait out when the fish struck but it was fairly routine after that. Were we excited? You bet. We’ve been fishing together for 15 years so this was certainly special!” Very few fisher people can lay claim to landing a 60. This was very special and certainly made up for their disappointment on Saturday. Chandler is a junior angler and was awarded second place in that category. Chad, Brad, and Gary Hickman, Ken Dellane, and Dieter Voeltz earned third place fishing the Mercury powered Jupiter named Blue Whistler/ PromarineUSA.com/Kingpin. “The first day was pretty slow but we still managed to get a

The fishing team named 39.18,” said team captain, Chad Unlimited Tito’s was fourth. Hickman. “On day two we went Named after the popular vodka back to the Banana Bar and that sponsors the team, John found our 59.87. We worked the Jackson, Mikey Edwards, Joey area really hard but it wasn’t till Saracione, Carl Torresson, and noon when she ate a Lee’s live goggle eye. We had worked farGrant Portier dropped to fourth ther south reef-side and were in after leading on day one. Don’t shed a tear for them for they had 100’ of water.” Chad went on to one of the best fishing days I can say that he believes the key is ever remember scaling a 58.90 having the right baits. “Thank on day one and a 55.92 plus two you, Lee!” more 50s on day two. “We like fishing in January in Key West and have been here just about every year. We cannot thank Lee Murray enough for continuing this event year after year,” Chad added, “and the new Stock Island Marina Village The Unreel Fishing Team won an 18’ Release boat, Evinrude outboard, and a was superb!” Continental Trailer.

Miss Ivory picked up second place with this 60.21. Jason Johnson, and Craig and Chandler Peden. ProMarineUSA.com/ Kingpin scaled this 59.87 to earn third. Chad, Brad, and Gary Hickman, Ken Dellane, and Dieder Voeltz.

January 24–26, 2014 “It was tough and nerve racking,” said Jackson. “We were at the top on day one but knew the fleet was zeroing in on where the fish were. They did and we went from first to fourth.” But who can argue that they didn’t fish hard and turned in a stellar performance scaling three kings in the 50-pound range, just none better than the 58.90. You have to admit it, three kings in the 50s in one day makes a great experience. And remember, more than 85% of the fleet never got close to a 50. The Unlimited Tito’s team had four! Unlimited Tito’s, sponsored by Tito’s Handmade Vodka, is a brand new 34 foot Yamaha powered Blackfin. Make sure you take a look at it! Fifth place was the only spot in the top ten that a non-member team captured. Sixth place went to our 2010 National Champion Terry McCray from Apopka, Florida. Terry, his son Ryan Johnson, and daughter Kalynn Handy, fishing on their Evinrude powered Wellcraft named All In, scaled a great 50.58 on day one. Ryan caught the 50-pound king plus his first wahoo and sailfish on day two. “We arrived at the Banana Bar at 7:40 on day two. Jack, our first line in the water with a ribbonfish down 45 feet got hit and Ryan made short order of the fight. It was a king but not bigger than the 50 we caught the day before. Then he caught his first sailfish on a ribbon also. It was six feet in length.” “Right after that Kalynn got her first sail fishing a goggle eye down. This is certainly a weekend we’ll never forget. The sail was seven-and-a-half feet in length.” Kalynn was the event’s Top Lady Angler! This is a great family fishing team! Jagermeister, with Brian Humphreys at the helm, along with Mike Minia, Alicia Lipscomb, and Ray Vidal, picked up seventh place with a 49.81 caught on day one. “We fished just 17 miles from Stock Island and were in fish all day,” explained Humphreys. “I caught her at noon on a ribbonANGLER | March 2014

fish down and she literally came right to the boat.” The team went back to the same spot on day two and within 25 minutes they released six fish. It was non-stop but it was our day one fish that turned out to be our biggest for the weekend.” The team fishes a Yamaha powered Contender and is sponsored by Kluch Clothing, X-Generation Custom Rods, and E-Sea Rider along with Jagermeister. P.J. Myers, Keith Mangus, Stevie Cooper, and junior angler Jake Myers picked up eighth with a nice 48.88 caught on day two and surpassed the 43.57 caught on day one. Jake earned third place Junior Angler. “Yes we were at the Bar with the rest of the competitors,” P.J. started. “We had both runners, which we caught, and goggle eyes we bought. It was about one o’clock when our king skied on a gog. Jake, of course, was the first to the rod and brought her to the boat. We were right next to the Tito’s team. I have to say that Jake has really matured. He’s no longer a junior who just comes along, but a respected member of the team. He literally can do it all on the team. We’re pretty proud

of him!” The Sword-A-Crazy team of Thomas “Butch” Cardenas, Mark Bosler, Blake Campbell, and Guy Ward, came down from Panama City Beach and earned ninth with a 48.22. The Mercury powered Sea Hunter team was fishing just south of the Tail End Buoy. “We’ve heard a lot about fishing here in January and it lived up to its reputation,” Butch replied. “I caught the fish using a Hard Tail off the kite on Saturday. We were fishing next to Lil Devil who saw the king sky before we did. She went ten feet in the air.” “We did a lot of homework before we came down and it really helped. We won’t miss another tournament down here!” Rounding out the top ten in the Open Class was Lance Irvine’s team, Young Guns. His team of Doug Perez, Tom Bardes, Carolyn and Houston Smith, Sean Hamil, and Steve Pagan, scaled a 47.94 on the second day of the event. They fish a Mercury powered Contender. The Small Boat Class was won by Sammy and Steve Papia, Chris Joiner, and Jason Weinman on the Mercury powered Competition named Bada Bing.

They scaled a 46.49 on day two. “We started inshore using some local information but it didn’t pan out,” Sammy started. “We caught some low 30s at the Banana Bar then lost a big pig and caught a 32. Next day went back and caught a king right away. Then we put a big blue runner on our Cannon downrigger and sent her down. The 46 picked her up and the fight was on. When she came up we knew she was a good fish, so I didn’t miss the gaff shot, and the scale more than proved that.” The team expects to fish a very aggressive schedule this year. “Starting in Key West and getting some good points is a great start,” Sammy boasted. He’s right. You must set a performance schedule for the team and then execute to the best of your ability. This team’s a winner! Their sponsors include Aquatic Nutrition, Mr. Tigger Tackle, Cannon, and Columbia Sportswear. Second place was earned by the Yamaha powered Cape Horn team of Raymond Pugh, Mark Kerns, and Bill Bean. They fish out of Nag’s Head, North Carolina on the boat named Fin-Nagle. “This was our first trip to

January 24–26, 2014 Key West,” said Pugh. “We’ve heard so much about this event we finally had to come and we weren’t disappointed. We know that the more we fish here we will learn how to figure this out. We did get some info and we were in the Banana Bar area. We found a slick and stopped. Caught a 37 and our 40 plus a nice dolphin and a sailfish.” Finally, third place went to Frank Langdon who fishes an Evinrude powered World Cat. Frank fishes all alone and scaled a 39.50 this weekend. Frank is a regular in Division 10 and has won or placed in many, many events. This was a fantastic event thanks to Lee Murray who has promoted the event for 18 years, plus the staff and management of the new Stock Island Marina Village went way out their way to make us feel extremely welcome. Personally, this is easiest marina we’ve ever worked with. They are going to build an 80-room hotel on the property in the very near future. Add to that the fun in Key West, great restaurants, good shopping, and friendly people. As Jimmy Buffett says, “Welcome to paradise!” ■

Unlimited Tito’s 58.90 earned fourth. John Jackson, Mikey Edwards, John Saracione, Carl Torresson, and Grant Portier.

Sixth place went to the All In. Terry McCray, Ryan Johnson, and Kalynn Handy, who was also Top Lady Angler. Had a 50.58.

Jagermeister was seventh with this 49.81. Brian Humphreys, Mike Minia, Alicia Lipscomb, and Ray Vidal.

Triple J caught this 48.88. P.J. and Jake Myers, Keith Mangus, and Stevie Cooper.

Year Has Begun!

Why Aren't the Points Posted on Monday Morning Right After the Tournament Is Over? All the paperwork and pictures from the tournaments are shipped overnight to the office on Monday by our field directors. This information doesn't arrive until late Tuesday morning. The membership director goes right to work. First, all new or renewal membership applications must be entered into the database. Next, all the points are entered. Then every name on the SKA Registration Form must be entered, sometimes two to three hundred. Also, there could be two, three, or even four events on any given weekend, adding to the workload. We have the staff to perform the task that has to be done, but it does take time. Thanks for your patience! March 2014 | ANGLER

AUTOPILOT VS JOYSTICK PILOT F E AT U R E B Y F E AT U R E

Garmin GHP 10 with GHC 20

I

have always suggested that an autopilot is a good idea on the typical SKA boat. Obviously, it frees up your hands on the way out to a hot fishing spot, and it can also give you the same freedom while trolling along a reef or over that hot spot. It also can steer straighter than you, in fact, which can save you fuel. Now Mercury is including an autopilot when you get their Joystick steering package for some engines. I wondered how it compares to conventional pilot software and control. After checking it out, it turns out that there are trade-offs, so you have to look closely and consider how you would use an autopilot. There are cost details, too, especially if you get one of the other brands of joystick control and add a pilot to those systems. There are some savings and some extra costs.

packages for I/O, Axius and Zeus. Like a regular autopilot, you can let the pilot steer the course you are presently on when you enable it. Then you can fine tune your course in one degree increments or 10 degree increments for dodging an obstruction or making big adjustments. You can also steer to waypoints, or even a series of waypoints. You will need to interface to your chartplotter’s waypoint library. You lay out the waypoints on the chartplotter, and click Waypoint Sequencing on the Precision Pilot pad of the joystick system. In another step beyond what a typical autopilot does, the Mercury Joystick system includes a cruise control like on a car. You set rpm’s, not speed. There is also Autotrim, automatically changing the tilt with speed and whether or not you are on plane. You will also want the VesselView display, which comes in two sizes. It will also take a space on your console, but you won’t have an autopilot display. VesselView shows all of what your engine and steering are doing. If you are docking with

the Joystick, you will see which engines are in forward or reverse, as well as rpm’s. The Joystick system also controls trolling speed and can be adjusted by 10 rpm’s per click. You can troll a straight line along a reef, with the Mercury pilot, for example. Joystick control has a few advantages over regular autopilots. Since the Joystick control comes close to the Dynamic Positioning systems on commercial vessels in the offshore oil rig business, it can hold your boat in one exact spot, and keeping the bow in the same direction. Mercury calls this steady position Skyhook. On the water, you would drop down to trolling speed as you approach a wreck or fishing hole, for instance. As you see that you are getting right to where you want to be on your fishfinder screen, you click the Skyhook button on the Precision Pilot control pad. Your boat will be held right there. The Skyhook function requires an interface to a GPS through NMEA2000, which is how it knows where to hold the boat, of course, along with its compass.

www.FishSKA.com

Skyhook is also very handy when waiting for a drawbridge or an opening at the boat ramp. The ability to hold the bow heading steady really shines. Commercial vessels use Dynamic Positioning to sit very close to an oil platform without actually tying up or banging into the platform. For tens of thousands of dollars, these systems are very precise. The GPS on your boat may dither a bit, so I wouldn’t recommend that you use Skyhook to sit by a dock if you’re stepping on and off the boat. Commercial captains have to go to school to use their DP systems, which makes it even more miraculous that Skyhook simply requires that you push one button to activate it. Conventional autopilots can fish a pattern over a spot, but they won’t hold steady in one spot like Skyhook.

GARMIN and RAYMARINE PILOTS So, is an autopilot, like the kind from Garmin or Raymarine, replaceable with the autopilot included in Mercury Joystick steering? This may be more 31

interesting now that Mercury is increasing compatibility to include more mechanical outboards than just their Verados in the near future. As I said at the top, you have to look at details. What will you do with a pilot? Will you use those trolling patterns? Are you just looking to take it easy and save gas on a long trip? Just to clarify, Raymarine offers a joystick option for their bigger pilots. Working with the rudder angle display mode, you simply alter course or turn the rudder angle in increments. There is no throttle control or splaying of individual motors with this joystick. Also Raymarine makes their EV-DBW pilot to connect to driveby-wire systems like ZF pods, Teleflex Optimus 360, and Volvo IPS. A total combined system of this pilot and the drive-by-wire system with a joystick comes very close to the Mercury Joystick and its pilot. It will not have the Skyhook feature like Mercury. Similarly, the Garmin pilot can be interfaced to the same driveby-wire joystick systems as the Raymarine. Both Garmin and Raymarine designed a connection to the circuitry of the Optimus 360 actuator that controls as many as three or four outboards, so you don’t have to use an autopilot hydraulic pump. An autopilot pump can be a large portion of the cost of a pilot equipment package, plus extra labor and hydraulic fittings.

Navico’s Simrad has some interesting autopilot features to work with drive-by-wire and a display that comes near to VesselView. It’s kind of cool that boats can use a standard data language on a CAN bus, with NMEA2000. SmartCraft came out first, because NMEA was moving slowly to finish their language, but now data can be shared. Boats are ahead of cars in this respect for standardization. Conventional autopilots have a separate compass unit. This requires an extra step in installation, but you get to put the compass where there will be a minimum of magnetic interference. A Garmin autopilot has an interface to the boat’s tachometer, so it

Mercury joystick piloting for outboards

knows to steer less sharply when you’re on plane than when you’re running slowly. Mercury’s system can sense planing, mostly so it can adjust tilt, but it also steers accordingly. I also recommend that anyone with an autopilot should have a wired or wireless remote control. While you’re fishing near the transom, you still have control of the heading, and you can dodge around an obstacle. Mercury has not offered remote controls yet for the pilot in the Joystick system. Garmin, Raymarine and other large autopilots have adaptive software, which means they learn quickly how the boat handles and changes the steering as conditions change, too. AutoLearn is the

Garmin GHP 20

32

www.FishSKA.com

Raymarine trade name for the adaptive software in their topof-line pilots. While many pilots must be manually programmed for the rudder’s centerline, Raymarine learns it by the boat’s handling. If you troll slowly with one of your twin engines off, then Raymarine’s Fastrim AST (Advanced Steering Technology) will sense that and hold the helm to one side to compensate. It won’t waste your battery power by continuously hunting around and trying to return to the centered rudder position. Any way you outfit your boat, it is a great idea to have an autopilot. Take advantage of it. As always, remember to stay alert and keep a look out. ■ John Minetola applies his knowledge of electrical and electronic engineering combined with 35 years of experience in the marine industry to write articles for Angler magazine January– June revealing the latest, innovative products available to sport fishermen.
