This solid home in Auckland is one of the oldest in the city. It is said to have been built by a sea captain, and constructed from the bricks he brought from England as ballast in his ship. Architect Malcolm Walker extended the house and renovated the existing spaces to bring light and open informality into this historic residence.

THE CROSSING
Featured on the New Zealand edition of Grand Designs, this unconventional house sits high on the hills above Pakiri Beach, just north of Auckland. Conceived as a small home that is also a large-scale piece of art, the stainless steel-clad residence has an asymmetric form that mirrors the landscape, with sloping walls and no square angles.

Some terraced houses are infamous for being narrow, dark and damp. When architects Tony Chenchow and Stephanie Little renovated their house they focused on bringing light and volume into the traditional slim shell. Positioned on a headland on Waiheke Island, in New Zealand, with views in all directions, the winner of the 2013 Home of the Year was designed by Stevens Lawson Architects. It is conceived as a series of pods grouped in such a way that they create a secondary, intermediate space between them. It’s in this casual, organic transitional space that most of the living occurs, and here too is the highly functioning but cleverly camouflaged kitchen.

Located on the cliffs above Sydney’s Northern Beaches, this house has an enviable view over Bilgola Beach. Neeson Murcutt Architects’ focus was on the seaward-facing side of the house, where the kitchen and dining area lead out onto a deck. This kitchen, on the second floor of a typical 19th century brownstone townhouse in Brooklyn, New York, posed a not-so-typical renovation for its owners: it was a bathroom. Custom cabinetry and a narrowerthan-standard counter created more floor space, and priority was also given to a separate plating and prep surface. The Carrera marble work surfaces and appliances gleam against the dark cabinetry and floor tiles, but the house’s period details have otherwise largely been left in place.

Daniel Witten-Hannah and Alex Munro’s brief to architect Gerrad Hall laid out the idea of a house with warm simplicity. Both are fans of modern architecture and because their site wasn’t in a heritage area, they wanted to explore a unique and contemporary form for the house. Inside, the kitchen was of central importance; they wanted it to be the social heart of the home, simple and refined with close attention to detailing, and honest materials.

For a kitchen that makes such a grand first impression, this is a design of subtle moments. Positioned on a clifftop, the house reveals architect Mike O’Sullivan’s clever restraint in the way the connection between house and view have been layered – windows are veiled with vertical structure or shaded with deep soffits so that the view is framed.

Many office kitchens are little more than a coffee and tea station. A fridge and a microwave might provide the basics for employees to heat their lunch and the most discussion over the dishwasher is who empties it. Design and branding studio Alt Group had a different brief for their office kitchen. The company provides a cooked lunch for their 20-odd staff every day and so the kitchen was required to be robust enough to handle large-scale daily cooking, as well as being approachable for making that single cup of tea.

THE CHEF’S KITCHEN
Chefs Natalia Schamroth and Carl Koppenhagen worked with architect Andre Hodgskin to design the renovation to their wellpositioned but run-down villa. Later in the process worked with designer Natalie du Bois on the kitchen fitout. “The kitchen is our life, really,” explains Carl. So it was obvious that these two chefs would have strong ideas about how their home kitchen should look and operate.

A move from their apartment in Brooklyn to this family home in Westchester County, New York, gave chef Dan Kluger, his wife Hannah and their two daughters plenty of room to spread out. This was particularly true when it came to their kitchen, which was designed as a highly functional, contemporary space with expansive counter space and a mix of appliances that allows the family to easily scale up or down for everyday meals or entertaining alike.
