E-FORMING God’s Peoples—It’s the theme of our Synod Assembly, June 9-11. In this year of remembering the start of the Protestant Reformation, we remember that God is not done with us yet. And, we know that God has been re-forming Christ’s body since it began. God has been re-forming our congregations as long as they have existed. We look forward (sometimes reluctantly) to the re-form that is in store for us - for each of us. As always, I’m looking forward to Assembly. Following our Synod’s time together, I look forward to a personal re-forming set to begin June 14. That’s the day I begin a nine-week sabbatical. And I thank you in advance. I hope to re-form my thinking. I’ll be participating in the Washington Island Forum in June with a focus on who Jesus is for me; in the Chautauqua Institute in July with a focus on what the church can become; and in the ELCA’s Rostered Ministers Gathering in August with a focus on who we are as leaders together. I also hope to do some reading. I’d like to finish at least five of the books that are piling up around me - the ones that seem to be speaking to my soul.

I hope to re-form my relationship with God. Prayer. Reflection. Time to ponder.

I hope to re-form my family focus. The travels will take me near to grandkids. We’ll be taking time to just be together. We’ll be re-forming our relationships, aiming that we will only get better together. I hope to re-form my system. Some sleep, some healthy eating, some walking, and some biking can’t hurt. I may even re-form some habits for healthier living. I hope to re-form my relationship with God. Prayer. Reflection. Time to ponder. I t sounds good to me. Please pray for my sabbatical. While I am away, I will still be praying for you all. Bishop Jim Arends Bishop of the La Crosse Area Synod bishop@lacrosseareasynod.org

FIRST TEEN CLOTHES CLOSET UPDATE

Above are the tentative readings scheduled for June. Readings used during worship are determined by the pastors on a weekly basis, and therefore are subject to change. You can also view this list online and subscribe to receive them as an email at 1stlu.org/readings.

“F

or some families here, Onalaska might as well be on the other side of the state.” These were the words of one of the county social workers housed in Trinity Lutheran Church on the North Side and assigned specifically to serve residents of the area around La Crosse’s Northside Elementary. Many of us don’t think twice about what it takes to get from the north side of La Crosse to our church’s Onalaska location—it’s just a few minutes drive. If you have a car. But, in working to serve vulnerable teens through the First Teen Clothes Closet, we have witnessed how, for families without reliable transportation, those few miles are a challenge to cross, with transit systems that only reach downtown Onalaska during the day on weekdays—not the weekends and evenings when most need to access our Closet. In just the first three weeks of providing shuttles from Trinity

#FaithAlive3 6 5

Lutheran Church, which hosts a Children’s Clothes Closet for younger ages, we served a dozen young people who were previously unaware of our closet or unable to access it due to lack of transportation. And the need is much greater. First Teen Clothes Closet will continue to provide the shuttle two weeks in June (June 5 and June 19) and anticipates a high demand in August, September and October. We also hope to partner with the Clothes Closet during its August shoe distribution. In years past, it has distributed close to 200 pairs of new shoes to elementary-age children in a 3-hour span during a community picnic and kick-off night for the Children’s Clothes Closet. Thanks to the support of this congregation and the Franke Foundation, we have the funds and clothes we need to make a difference in the lives of young people. Our drivers, hosts, shoppers, youth sorters and inventory workers help First Lutheran and the First Teen Clothes Closet bring help closer to those who need it. FIRST LUTHERAN FOUNDATION REPORT

FINANCE COMMITTEE REPORT $400,000.00

FUNDS GIVEN TO SCHOLARSHIPS IN 2017 The First Lutheran Foundation scholarship committee has awarded scholarships to 10 high school graduates to help with their post-secondary education. The recipients are: Karli Breiling, Alexander Shupe, Cathryn Shupe, Nicholas Shupe, Cortney Christnovich, Tianna Rasmussen, Hallie Schmeling, Zachary Thomas, Alexis Marcon, and Mallory Thies. Each will receive $300 through the Mabel Anderson Scholarship program. The money is awarded after the recipient submits his or her first-semester grades.

$350,000.00

The Foundation/Endowment Fund was established in December 1989 upon the passing of Ms. Mabel L. Anderson. Mabel was a longtime member of First Lutheran, having been baptized and confirmed here. Her will/trust bequest a substantial sum to First Lutheran in memory of her parents Peder and Johanna Anderson. It was Mabel’s wish that this monetary gift would enable further growth of our church, its ministries and stewardship within the community.

$200,000.00

Per the Foundation’s bylaws, 5% of its total assets can be spent each year towards four categories: 1) Mabel Anderson Scholarships (for graduating high school seniors); 2) community outreach, such as Salvation Army, local food pantries, and New Horizons; 3) ELCA related missions, such as Sugar Creek Bible Camp, First Lutheran Helping Hands, and youth trips; and 4) capital improvements for First Lutheran. During the past 4–5 years, the Foundation has graciously donated more than $10,000 towards these four categories. Contributions to the Foundation Fund are not spent, but invested. The money is held in a couple of low-risk investment funds and money market accounts. Year after year the interest earned from this fund is used to expand our outreach and ministries. Therefore, contributions made to the fund serve as “seeds” that keeps on giving. Contributions may be made through simple gifts, wills & trusts via estate planning, memorials and beneficiary through life insurance policies. Any amounts are welcome and greatly appreciated. Committee members: Steve Thinnes, Christine Sander, Michele Burton, Steve Lind, Meredith Hougen, Andrea Dombroski and Todd Hanson

GOD’S HANDS & FEET

SERVE & GIVE

A FIESTA OF THANKFULNESS

I

t’s so much fun to gather together for a celebration, whether it’s a graduation, a wedding, a birthday, an anniversary, or just for no reason at all. I love people gathering together to talk, eat and play games. Graduation parties are the best: seeing family and the graduate’s friends together, each party reflecting the graduates personality. Gathering family and friends for a wedding is especially fun with dancing, eating and, of course, the cake. Each gathering is unique but meaningful in many ways. One of the best reasons to get together is to say thank you. That is why we will have a Fiesta on July 16th. It’s so important to let all who have helped at church know how much they are appreciated and you are!! The staff wants everyone to know that we cannot do this ministry without each one of you helping. It takes all of us using the gifts God has given us to do all that we do here at church from Frolic to the OWLS. I thank God for you all just as Paul did to the people of Corinth in I Corinthians 1:4: “I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given to you in Christ Jesus.” Each gift being used within our church is an opportunity to give thanks and praise to God. Using our gifts is the greatest gift to each other, and when each of us serves using those gifts, we grow in love for God and one another. God has given us an opportunity to use our gifts in a place filled with grace and love, so may everyone who comes to church find a place to serve so that we can continue to praise and thank God. When we rely on God to equip #FaithAlive3 6 5

RED VEST!

The synod needs volunteers for the Synod Assembly, June 9-11, held in La Crosse this year. Aside from wearing red vests, volunteers play an important role in making the assembly run smoothly, starting with registration on Friday evening and throughout the Saturday and Sunday sessions. This a great opportunity to meet members and clergy from other ELCA congregations in our synod, participate in worship and prayer throughout the three days and feel the satisfaction of helping the mission of our church. To volunteer or to learn more, contact Betty Sacia at 608.526.3506 or via e-mail: brsacia@yahoo.com.

NEWSLETTER ASSEMBLY It’s a relaxing way to volunteer! Wednesday, June 28, at 9am, to assemble the July newsletter. See you there!

Kathryn Pedretti Director of Servant Ministries kathryn@firstlu.org

Announcing a new ministry at First Lutheran called “Helping Hands!” If you need help with small jobs around the house, such as changing batteries in a smoke detector or changing a light bulb, or if you need a couple of meals delivered to your house because of a medical condition or some groceries, just go to the “Helping Hands” board by the nursery and make out a slip with a description of what you need help with and your telephone number. Then anyone who thinks they can help out can take the slip and call the number to work out the details. This ministry is open to all in need of help and to those who can provide the help. There is no set group of “helpers” so we need involvement from all who can be a blessing to someone else. Let’s pray this ministry will be a shining example of “God’s work, our hands!”

WELCOME BASKETS Remember to pick up a welcome basket for your new neighbor. Located in the resource center.

May was an excellent month for the OWLs. 23 of us Hooted our way to Norskedalen, where we were greeted with warm hospitality and a warm spring day. The Scandinavian lunch in Westby was a delicious delight. Our potluck the following week included the usual delicious lunch and a very interesting presentation by Paw’s for Independence. Happy 5th anniversary! In June, OWLs will be 5 years old. Our first outing was in June 2012. In commemoration of our anniversary, we will repeat the wonderful evening we had on our very first outing. For #FaithAlive3 6 5

those of you who remember, 5 years ago we gathered on the banks of the Mississippi River to listen to a wonderful concert by the La Crosse Concert Band. We didn’t yet understand that one of the best parts of our outings would be eating together. So with this band concert evening, we will include an excellent meal. We will re-enact our anniversary on Wednesday, June 14. We will meet at the church at 4:30pm and head for a favorite summer dining location, Huck Finns’ on the Water. They have a good selection of fish and other Wisconsin delights. After dinner and dessert, we will head to Riverfront Park for a concert by the La Crosse Concert Band. The theme for the night is “Circus Days” with many old favorites. Pack up the lawn chair and be prepared for an evening of great music. The concert is free and dinner is on your own. Since the restaurant likes a count ahead of time, please notify Brian Narveson at

owls@firstlu.org or 608-526-9700 by Tuesday, June 13, if you plan to attend. The June potluck will be one week later on Wednesday, June 21, at noon in the fellowship hall. Our speaker will be one of the rangers from the Bryce Prairie Wildlife Refuge. A unit of the National Wildlife Refuge System, it is comprised of a wetlands reserve spanning four states. Our speaker will tell us about the mission and location of the reserve, the many places we can enjoy the preserve and volunteer opportunities to help continue its success. We look forward to seeing everyone in June! The OWLs are a group at First that welcomes anyone, First Lutheran members or not, who are 55+. For information or to ask questions, contact Brian Narveson at owls@firstlu.org.
