doTELL Should I consider a career in ‘digital’? Recruitment expert Steve Thomson looks at the growth of the e-commerce sector and explains some of the areas where businesses are crying out for talent

I recently wrote an article that outlined the growing shortage of skilled workers in the UK for the digital industry. Although the focus was on the South East of England, the truth is that all over the country, talent agencies and in-house recruiters are finding it increasingly difficult to find local candidates with the right expertise. This is worrying for several reasons. The first is that the growing digital sector generates a lot of revenue and has the potential to grow exponentially. Therefore, its health will have a direct impact on the UK economy (not to mention our standing within the global digital landscape). Although digital companies have felt the effects of the recession along with everyone else, they have come through to the other side and are now showing signs of recovery. Up to 750,000 digital jobs could be created over the next five years. However, this growth won’t be sustainable without an equal growth in skills. The second cause for concern is that without the right talent in the UK, companies and recruiters are looking elsewhere for suitable candidates. It is not necessarily a bad thing to bring in skilled workers from abroad. However, it would be a great shame not to nurture home-grown talent, especially when current unemployment figures are high. I don’t believe there is not enough talent in the UK. Rather, not enough is being done to help young people and mature workers gain the right skills to enter the industry. The types of job in the digital sector require people with skill-sets that range from the very technical to the highly creative, so you don’t have to be a computer whizz to succeed. Here are just a few examples of the type jobs out there:

Online Marketing and Advertising There are so many different disciplines with this area, from Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and Search Engine Marketing (SEM) to Display Marketing and Big Data Analytics. This is such a booming area as we as consumers spend so much of our time online. Therefore, this is where the marketers and advertisers need to get our attention. There are various different types of job within this area, so whether your talent is more commercially orientated (i.e. marketing and communications), or technical (i.e. data and analytics), there are plenty of opportunities.

Product and Project Management Are you the sort of person who likes to be in charge, collaborating and pulling together a team toward the same goal to meet objectives? Are you an excellent communicator with the ability to speak with both commercially-focused and technically-orientated people? If so, consider being a Product or Project Manager. Within the digital space, the project could be anything from building a website to creating mobile app and will typically involve working with lots of different stakeholders to achieve your objectives. You can even start at a junior level and work your way up.

User Experience (UX) & Design What makes a website or mobile app nice to look at and easy to use? More than likely, a talented UX and Design person has been part of a project team to build something that’s easy

on the eye and a pleasure to use. For most individuals, you either have that creative ‘gene’ or you don’t. But remember, it’s not just about making something look nice – it’s about the functionality as well. If you build a really good portfolio and show initiative, you can potentially walk straight out of university or college into a UX Design job.

Sales & Business Development Similar to being born with a creative ‘gene’, sales people are usually born with the ability to communicate really well - i.e. listen to the needs of a business and then consult and convince why the said product or service meets those needs. If you are excited by online technology and have the requisite level of professionalism, there are tons of opportunities with SaaS (Software-as-a-Service) companies providing cloud-based products and services. From eCommerce platforms to Social Media Technology, these companies all need good sales and account management people. What’s more, you can earn top dollar if you’re good at it!

Software/Web Development Oh, the possibilities! Many a programmer has made themselves a fortune by creating the next best thing (think Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook). This is one of the areas that recruiters most struggle to find home-grown talent and increasingly have to search abroad. Whilst you will likely start your education/ career with a broad skill-set, learning the fundamental programming concepts, my advice would be to become an expert in one or two programming languages. Being a subject matter expert will only increase your value. If you’re an experienced programmer in web-related technologies, you will very likely be in demand. There are ample vacancies for both permanent jobs and contractors throughout the South East. Or perhaps you’ll become the next inventor of a multi-million pound mobile app! So, how do you train for all of the above? This is debatable, but my advice would be if you are academic and have the financial means, then go to university. However, think very carefully about the degree you are going to spend the next three years of your life completing. I meet so many graduates that discover that there degree is not actually useful in an increasingly digital world. Is your chosen degree course relevant to today’s market and will it help you enter into your chosen career? For the technical job market, I suggest that degrees in Computer Science, Digital Media or Mathematics are nearly always the most sought after by employers. For the more commercially minded, you may wish to opt for a Business or Marketing related degree. Of course, a degree isn’t the way to go for everyone. Thankfully, there are a number of different options, from apprenticeships to college courses to self-learning. The important thing is to be passionate about what you do. Think carefully about your existing skills and strengths and see how they can be applied to the digital industry. silver savers Greg Mahon, from Rathbone Investment Management, reviews the Chancellor’s recent announcements on spending, tax and the deficit and explains what that might mean for you

ith one eye on next May’s general election, George Osborne’s fifth budget contained a great deal for older people, who have a greater propensity to vote (and, it could be argued, might be at risk of voting for UKIP if they feel unappreciated by the Conservatives). The key surprise was the biggest reform of the pensions industry since the current system was introduced in the 1920s, whereby pension holders will not be forced to buy annuities and can manage their money themselves. This was seen as negative for the life insurance companies, particularly those with large annuities businesses, but the sector is extremely innovative and is likely to develop new products to limit the damage. As well as increasing the ISA limit to £15,000, the Chancellor announced a new savings vehicle, pension bonds. There were few details, but they may work like National Savings bonds: whatever the details, a four per cent yield on a three-year bond is extremely attractive with deposit rates at such low levels, even though there will be an investment limit of £10,000. Other positive measures include a doubling of capital allowances to £500,000, which will be particularly positive for small and medium-sized companies and therefore for the economy as a whole. UK investment as a percentage of GDP lags behind our competitors, such as Germany and the US, by about 40 per cent. Mr Osborne clearly hopes that increased investment will generate growth and lead to increased tax revenues in future. Heavier industries will also benefit from the limiting of the carbon tax to £18/tonne from 2016-17. Although the climate change levy has not been abolished as many business people had hoped for, freezing the carbon tax rate will be of some benefit to energy-intensive industries, whose utility bills have risen significantly in recent years. Overall, Mr Osborne had little room for manoeuvre. With the catastrophic 2008 financial crisis still casting a long shadow over the UK’s finances, the chancellor maintained a prudent

approach and resisted pre-election giveaways in favour of a broadly balanced budget. He was, however, able to make much of the country’s miracle recovery over the last 12 months. Last year, we were at risk of sliding into a triple-dip recession and Mr Osborne’s opponents seemed to be making a good case for why ‘austerity’ (which we haven’t really experienced) was causing the economy to slowdown rather than recover. One year later, the OBR’s forecast for GDP growth in 2014 has been revised up again to 2.7 per cent, inflation is forecast to remain below target at 1.9 per cent and weekly wages are rising for the first time in over six years. Public borrowing for 2015 is forecast to be £107 billion, which will result in lower issuance of gilts than previously expected. This means that borrowing is back to a similar level to before the financial crisis. The 6.0 per cent forecast for unemployment in 2016 appears a little ambitious, but this will not detract from the Chancellor’s upbeat message about the economy. For those of us who have been in the investment management industry for some years, the most interesting thing about the budget was how relatively unimportant it has become to financial markets. A few years ago, the City would be on tenterhooks, waiting for the big announcements that would move markets. This year on budget day the most important event for the UK stock market was arguably the press conference given by Janet Yellen, the chairperson of the US Federal Reserve (Fed). The Fed continued tapering its monthly asset purchase programme, which was reduced by another $10 billion, and Mrs Yellen indicated that the Fed may raise interest rates earlier than expected in Spring 2015. This is likely to boost the dollar and may alleviate the strong performance of sterling, which has outperformed all major currencies recently on the expectation that the Bank of England would be the first major central bank to raise rates. Contemporary art unravels the intriguing stories behind Uppark House and Gardens. Delving into the history of the fascinating characters connected to the property in this unique exhibition of contemporary arts and crafts designed to provoke and surprise visitors, whilst also providing unique insights into the history of the house. Unravelling Uppark is the third and final exhibition of the series Unravelling the National Trust. Conceived by arts organisation ‘Unravelled’ and supported by the Arts council, artists are invited to evoke histories, stories and a sense of place. Uppark was built in 1690 by Ford Grey, the first Earl of Tankerville. An ardent Protestant, the earldom was bestowed upon him by William of Orange for plotting against the Catholic James II. Grey honoured his title by building Uppark in the Anglo-Dutch style. In 1747, Sir Matthew Fetherstonhaugh bought the property after inheriting a fortune made from wine and coal trading. Sir Matthew was also one of the largest holders of stock of the

East India Company. Together with his wife Sarah they redecorated the house extensively and established most of the existing collection. Sir Harry Fetherstonhaugh, their only son, inherited Uppark in 1774 and further contributed to his parents’ collection by acquiring French furniture and ceramics. Sir Harry spent his youthful years in wild carousing. He was a close friend of the Prince Regent and his entourage included Emma Hart (the future Lady Hamilton, best remembered as Lord Nelson’s lover), who allegedly once danced naked on Uppark’s dining table for Harry and his guests. Middleage saw Sir Harry become something of a recluse, but in 1825 the then seventy-year old scandalized his social circles once again by marrying Mary Ann Bullock, his 20-year-old dairymaid. In 1989, Uppark was devastated by a fire and re-opened six years later after a huge restoration project. Inspired by this bold restoration project, Zoë Hillyard has created her signature hand-stitched patchwork ceramics, which sit within the house’s extensive ceramic collection.

Unravelled artist Steven Follen finds his inspiration in Sir Mathew Fetherstonhaugh’s link to shipping and to the East India Company. His installation ‘Trade’ comprises origami toy boats, made from folded metal sheets lined with gold leaf and filled with spices.

Video artist Jini Rawlings draws inspiration from Emma Hart’s story. Her installation in Uppark’s dining room looks beyond Emma’s original portrayal as mere entertainment for the male gaze. A series of mirrors reflects the many different attitudes to Emma and her unfolding story of fame and misfortune. Sir Harry’s scandalous marriage to his dairy-maid has inspired A Milkmaid’s Song, Gen Doy’s captivating sound piece in Uppark’s dairy and Matt Smith’s ‘The Lost Buckets’. Smith fuses the visual languages of Sèvres porcelain and Rococo furniture, with the shape of antique fire buckets, referencing the fact that the former milk maid Bullock was sent to Paris to study social graces before being brought back to take up residence in the house.

He’s a six-goal Argentine pro, ambassador for luxury hotel brand St. Regis, a Ralph Lauren model and a god of the polo pitch. Fine Sussex chats to Nacho Figueras ahead of his return to Cowdray Polo Club this season

Fine: Were you brought up in a polo playing family? NF: My family has always loved horses, and my father was the one who first introduced me to the sport of polo. We had horses growing up and I fell in love with the remarkable sport from a very young age.

Today, we are doing the same thing with polo around the world, and making it a part of our guests’ polo experience.

Fine: How has it since progressed?

Fine: At what age did you start to play?

NF: On so many different levels. I have to say that I am now really enjoying the horse breeding side of it, but basically I love everything about it.

NF: I learned to play polo at nine years old and turned professional at 17.

Fine: Where in the world has polo taken you?

Fine: Who taught you to play?

NF: Polo has taken me all over the world, and for that I am very grateful. I have played polo in France, England, USA, Brazil, Malaysia, China, Canada, UAE, Switzerland and many more countries, and of course in Argentina for many years.

NF: I learned to play with the Monteverde family and their friends and professionals at their farm. In Argentina, polo and riding/ horsemanship is so much easier to access than in other countries like England and USA. Growing up around horses is a great way to learn.

Fine: Did you always intend to become a professional player, or had you another career in mind? NF: I always loved sports and knew that that was what I wanted to do. I decided polo was the one at around 15.

Fine: When did your career take off? NF: At 17 I got my first job as a pro, playing in Paris. That is when it all started.

Fine: Tell us about your role as an Ambassador for the luxury St. Regis Hotels & Resorts brand. NF: I was the first ever St. Regis Connoisseur for the brand, and it has been a pleasure working with the hotel teams around the world. I have played polo on a St. Regis branded team or at a St. Regis branded event in China, England, USA, Brazil, UAE. We work with local media in each area and share stories about St. Regis. I love the fact that the founder of The St. Regis New York - John Jacob Astor - who founded the first ever St. Regis in 1904 in New York City, would take his family and friends to watch polo on Governors Island, just off the tip of Manhattan at the turn of the century and they would return to The St. Regis New York for afternoon tea and Bloody Mary cocktails.

Fine: How do you like our part of England and the Midhurst area? NF: I love West Sussex and in particular Midhurst and Cowdray Park Polo Club. I have great memories of playing polo over the years at Cowdray, and a few years ago I was based in Midhurst together with my wife and children, while I played for polo patron George Milford Haven. At the time my children attended Conifers school and they loved it! There are so many great bars and shops in Midhurst - always something to do and see.

Fine: You have helped Prince Harry with polo matches to support his Sentebale charity. Has your success made you feel that you want to give something back? NF: Yes for sure. I am an Ambassador for Sentebale, Prince Harry’s charity. I greatly enjoy supporting Sentebale and its cause. I visited Lesotho last year, where Sentebale does much of its work, and saw for myself the benefits that the charity funds. I support

other charities too - Robin Hood Foundation through the Piaget Hamptons Classic, a polo match in the Hamptons, New York, that raises money for underprivileged children in New York. In addition I support ‘Work to Ride’, a scheme set up for at risk inner city kids to connect with horses, learn to ride and benefit from having the responsibility of the hard work around caring for horses, playing a team sport etc.

Fine: We hear that this year there will be a new match following the St. Regis International Cup at Cowdray Park on 17 May in which your young son will be taking to the field. NF: Yes, my 14-year-old son Hilario is a good player and loves polo. He and I will be playing on the same team for St. Regis v Hurlingham. The match follows the annual St. Regis International Cup, which will be played at 2.30pm. The Family Traditions at St. Regis Cup match (featuring family members) will be played at 4.30pm and will be a lot of fun. I really hope spectators will enjoy the second match - it will be fantastic to see two matches on one afternoon, at the home of British Polo.

Fine: Family life is obviously very important to you. How do you manage your international polo appearances so that your family is able to remain involved? NF: My family is very important to me and we travel a lot together whenever and whereever possible. My children are well travelled and I think that gives them a very special perspective on the world. I am very lucky that my wife Delfina is always keen to travel with me whenever she can, and juggle the children’s and her own schedule to do so. We stay at a St. Regis hotel whenever possible - that certainly makes life easier.

It’s no coincidence that the Downs Course has been named as one of Golf Monthly’s top 50 stay and play midsize venues in the UK. Stunning!

“Goodwood is a wonderful environment in which to play golf. The setting is inspirational”, according to current World No 7, Ryder Cup Member and Goodwood Ambassador, Justin Rose. It’s praise indeed coming from one of the finest golfers England has produced in recent times. And he’s not wrong. Set in over 12,000 acres of stunning Sussex countryside, this year marks a 100-year history of golfing excellence, with two fine courses at Goodwood. The Park, perhaps less demanding than the Downs Course, is set mainly in parkland and close to the magnificent, historic Goodwood House. It is comparatively easy to walk this course with an array of interesting holes, none more so than the 18th - an uphill par 5 with a ‘blind’ second shot and a well protected green. Less demanding? Probably, but still a test of accuracy with its unforgiving rough and mature cedar trees demanding accuracy on most holes. The first ever round of golf played at Goodwood was in 1901 but it was the 7th Duke of Richmond’s second son Lord Bernard who commissioned champion golfer James Braid to lay out a new course on the estate and so the magnificent Downs Course was created. It’s 18 holes of pure pleasure for a keen golfer, combining variety, serenity and quality. Beautifully laid out and a true

test of one’s golfing talent, the early holes flow through mature forest where accuracy is of the utmost, before expanding out towards the end of the front 9. Most memorable during the first half of the course is the second hole where the green sits 200 feet below the level of the fairway. A carefully placed drive of no more than 200 yards will take you nicely to the top of the escarpment from where you launch a second shot into the valley to a large accommodating green. Stunning! The 6th hole is a driveable par 4 and set high above the valley, providing a wonderful panoramic view of the coast, the city and the magnificent cathedral. A driveable par 4 yes, but such a tricky green that birdies are hard to come by. As you approach the final third of the course, you will find the glorious 12th hole, a par 3 with a large and enticing green surrounded entirely by bunkers. Finally, The Kennels is as classy a 19th hole as you will find anywhere, providing a top quality golf shop and changing facilities par excellence in addition to a bar service to match. The awards for ‘Best Customer Service’ and runner up for ‘Best Overseas PADI Dive Centre’ were also received by Divewise one of Malta’s Dive centres. superstar chef There arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t many 15-year-olds who can claim to be award winners before even leaving school. But once that final bell rings this summer there will be no stopping the teenager, who plans to continue his success with a career in the kitchen

15 year old Jordon Powell is an award winner and he hasn’t even finished school yet. Fine Sussex talks to the rising star about how he went from making lasagne with mum to cooking’s next big thing

outh Lodge hotel has been the centre of attention on numerous occasions in recent years. Notably, for its Michelin Star and a winning role for chef Steven Edwards on Masterchef: The Professionals has put the luxury Sussex venue firmly on the map. So given the hotel’s pedigree and panache for selecting talent, it was only a matter of time before its next star rose from practical obscurity to share some of that limelight. It’s just that no one expected it to be the 15-year-old Saturday boy.

snapped up by the hotel and given a contract to work at the weekends.

And yet, there he was, one summery Saturday in 2013 at Horsham’s Big Nibble event, not only presenting to crowds like a pro but cooking at the same time. A star was born. Even his much more senior colleague, recent TV star Steven Edwards, commented how he could sit back and take a break with teenager Jordon Powell by his side.

It wasn’t long before Hamblet, the executive chef, gave the teenager a nudge to enter the Rotary International Britain and Northern Ireland (RIB) Young Chef competition. With the support of the hotel, which provided Powell with the ingredients and facilities to perfect his dishes, he beat thousands of young chefs to take the top spot – winning the competition with what one of the judges called “the best panna cotta I’ve ever had”. This was not just any panna cotta by the way. It was apple panna cotta with blackberries and cinnamon pancakes. He also made them mackerel with textures of blood orange and celery, lamb rump with roasted vegetables and dauphinoise pomme puree.

In reality though, Powell’s success started some time before his public appearance. Arguably at the age of two, when he and his mum would spend time together making cakes and pasta. “It’s one of my earliest memories, cooking. I will always remember our lasagne. For me it was playtime – making things, there’s lots you can do with food. And I’m naturally creative so I enjoyed the process and spent plenty of time in the kitchen”, he told Fine Sussex. Powell took his love of cooking to school and made the jump from a rookie home chef to A-grade pupil in Food Technology at Forest School for boys. It was here that his teacher spotted a gifted young man and convinced him to enter a competition, where he reached the semi final. By now, his cooking at school and in competitions coincided with a budding career at South Lodge. In fact, if you needed any reassurance of his commitment, his time at the hotel didn’t begin as an employee, but as unpaid work experience. He was quickly

I learnt so much and it just made me love it even more – I was so interested in everything they had to teach, not just about food but the techniques.”

There aren’t many 15-year-olds who can claim to be award winners before even leaving school. I also want to explore other food regions, I love Tuscany and I would one day like my own restaurant. And a Michelin Star”. Coming from a kid who’s been known to ask for a melon peeler for his birthday, we’d bet on seeing much more of Jordon Powell in the future.

Spring lamb Head chef at Amberley Castle, Robby Jenks, What you will need with a seasonal recipe that’s perfect for • 2.5 kg Lamb carcasses chopped small • 100ml Olive oil Easter Sunday, or any day • 200gr Onions chopped small

• 200gr Leeks chopped small • 200gr Carrots chopped small • 1 head of garlic cut in • 500gr Ripe plum tomatoes • 100gr Tomato puree • 10gr Fresh thyme • 10gr Fresh rosemary • 1gr Cumin seeds • 1500ml Chicken stock • 500ml Veal glace • 300ml Water • To Finish: Tapenade (lamb sauce) puree

What you need to do • Roast the lamb’s carcasses lightly in the oven. • Separately compote the onion, leeks, garlic, carrots and leeks in the olive oil, add the thyme, cumin seeds, cinnamon and rosemary and sweat for a further five minutes. Now add the tomatoes and tomato puree and cook out for 10 minutes. • Place the bones into a saucepan add the compote of vegetables, water, veal glace and chicken stock. Bring to the boil, reduce to a simmer and cook out for 30 minutes, pass through colander and then a chinoise and reduce to consistency and pass through muslin. It’s not just about ordering croissants anymore but developing cultural awareness and competing in the job market – Suzanne Triviere from Burgess Hill School for Girls explains why languages are catching up with Maths and English as a crucial subject to study

t Burgess Hill School for Girls, almost all students learn a modern foreign language – French, Spanish, German or Mandarin - up to GCSE. Why? Because we know that the study of a language supports key skills that benefit students across the curriculum; and because we value languages as a fundamental part of our students’ personal development.

English words, roughly 28 per cent originate from Latin, 28 per cent from French, and 25 per cent from the Germanic languages. Translation into English actually helps you understand the mechanics of our language better and you will develop a wider and more sophisticated vocabulary as a result; this builds your ability to communicate more successfully.

Interestingly, so do most universities. That is why in 2013, with the support of the Wolfson Foundation, we designed a purpose-built language laboratory. This wonderful new facility with state of the art technology allows students to work individually, in groups or in a one to one with the teacher (no more feelings of discomfort when trying to pronounce difficult words in front of the class) and with the focus placed very specifically on speaking and listening – that is, after all, what languages are about.

And yes, languages help you when you travel; whether you want to engage in conversation with the locals or buy a warm croissant and coffee for breakfast, language learning within school is, for many, the first step in embracing a new language and the start of a beautiful friendship. Through Languages we also develop historical awareness; we uncover the rich links between the United Kingdom and our nearest neighbours on the Continent. Today’s debates around our membership of the European Union can only really be understood in this wider cultural and historical context. And then there are the jobs: learning a foreign language will instantly open doors in our global community. In the business world, language is culture, an understanding of how people in other countries think and act. Social interactions and networking are essential in clinching any deal and you will be at a distinct advantage if you know how to greet your potential new Chinese client in the appropriate way. The European Union has actually cancelled debates because there are not enough translators available to work in English and in the UK there is generally a worrying shortage of very good linguists. It is a fact that we send fewer workers to the EU than any other EU state; a sad fact that we at Burgess Hill School are committed to changing.

Languages help to develop wider cultural awareness by offering insights into a different way of life and through languages we learn some really interesting things: why, for example, are French children’s Saint’s Days treated as mini birthdays? And why do Spanish children receive Christmas presents on January 6? Most importantly, why is it acceptable to dunk our croissant in hot chocolate in France and not in England? Such questions offer lots of potential for discussion and debate about why we do things the way we do. Languages also offer important insights into a country’s culture with each country’s unique literature, theatre and cinema traditions think Victor Hugo’s poetry or Kant’s German philosophy with their untranslatable nuances. To raise awareness of our energy usage, Farlington took part in Switch-Off Fortnight last November. The whole school was involved – learning about and taking action to save energy

arlington School actively encourages its students to pursue a number of environmental initiatives through sustainable development. We have the Eco-Schools Silver Award status and are actively following environmentally-friendly policies and activities in order to gain the coveted Green Flag status. We have recently relaunched our textiles recycling scheme through Bags of Support, a local company which collects re-useable clothes, shoes, belts, handbags, bedding and soft toys from the School’s recycling collection container. High quality items are sent directly to the Glodeni Orphanage in Romania; other items are sold and distributed in Romania to people who cannot afford to buy new clothing. To date the school has collected over 2.5 tonnes of clothing and has raised in excess of £1000 from this scheme alone. As well as raising money for good causes and the school’s environmental projects, the scheme also helps reduce landfill waste.

Paper and milk bottle tops are also recycled, as are writing instruments, biscuit wrappers and yoghurt pots through the TerraCycle scheme. Each form has an Eco-representative who has responsibility for ensuring the items are collected and Farlington’s eco-policies are implemented.

Eco representatives monitored electricity in the Senior School to compare usage year-on-year. In March 2014 the school participated in Waste Week 2014, which concentrates on the issues around plastics recycling and the importance of reducing plastic in landfill waste. In terms of conservation, girls in Year 7 have constructed a bug mansion from hay, bamboo, guttering, flower pots, sticks and bricks by the School lake. Bee and butterflyfriendly flowers have been planted to encourage wildlife and the Prep School will have its own bug mansion soon. The Forest Schools initiative which started last year is ensuring that our extensive 33 acres of beautiful parkland are fully utilised and the girls build an awareness of sustainable development and encouraging eco-diversity. Farlington’s Governing Council has set an ambitious target of reducing fossil fuel consumption by 20% over the next five years. A survey of potential renewable energy projects has been commissioned and as a result the School will have a new biomass boiler system from September 2014. Chris Snewin, Physics teacher and Staff Eco representative, said, “The benefits of sustaining our eco-standards extend beyond the improvement of the environmental quality of the school. It gives the pupils a sense of responsibility and pride in what they have achieved. S w i m m i n g star Fine Sussex meets 11-year-old Alex Curry at Great Walstead School currently swimming at county and regional standard

How did you get into swimming? I began swimming because my brother was swimming and I spent a lot of time at the pool watching him. So I thought why not give it a go!?

How many times a week do you swim? I train four or five times a week for a total of seven to eight hours but this includes land training where I do lots of strengthening exercises. It can be hard work but if you train properly you compete well.

How do you fit your swimming in with school? It can be a bit tricky but my teachers at Great Walstead sometimes give me an extra day to complete my prep if I am training or competing. My school really supports swimming and I get lots of opportunities to compete for them as well in school galas our swimming squad is pretty good and we do quite well in competitions.

What do you like about being in the pool? I like being in and around the pool as it is quite relaxing and I have lots of friends in

my training squad. Our coach always tries to end our sessions with some fun stuff, such as relays, otherwise it could be really boring.

How do you prepare for a competition? My mum gives me lots of good food before a big competition, usually pasta, and she makes me get a good night’s sleep.

What other sports do you enjoy? I enjoy hockey and have recently joined a local club. It is great to be involved in a team sport as well as my swimming.

What are your future plans? I have just qualified for my first South East Regional Championships, which I’m really excited about. I would really like to qualify for the National championships one day but that is probably a few years away. Alex Curry is currently the Sussex County Champion for the U12’s 200m Breaststroke. He qualified for two events at the 2014 Sussex County Championships reaching the finals. f the thought of having a hearing aid conjures up images of unsightly, heavy or obtrusive contraptions over your ear, you might be pleasantly surprised to know they are practically a thing of the past. As a result of the latest technology you can now have a hearing aid that’s entirely invisible and fitted inside, rather than behind, your ear. It will come as a relief to many people who are reluctant to see an audiologist about hearing problems because of the stigma associated with wearing a hearing aid. South East Hearing Care Centre’s managing director Robert Davies, who saw his first patient in Horsham 20 years ago, told Fine Sussex: “Unfortunately, we do see a lot of people who put off coming in for an assessment of their hearing because they either thought there was nothing that could be done or they don’t want to have a conventional hearing aid fitted. Research suggests people are waiting a staggering 10 years from first symptoms to actually getting advice and diagnosis. Think how much of life one could be missing out on; the sounds of spring, kids laughing, friends’ conversations, and important warnings. That is a sign of how difficult the subject is for some people to discuss openly. Thankfully, the equipment that can be used these days has massively improved. It’s smaller, more discreet and, in the case of Lyric, completely invisible.” It truly is an invisible way of improving quality of life again. Lyric is a hearing aid that stays in your ear 24/7, while you sleep, shower or play sport, unlike the traditional kind, which needs to be removed and turned on/off daily. Inserted inside the ear by an approved Lyric-trained audiologist and using non-surgical methods, it can be fitted and forgotten, without the need to maintain it or change the batteries. As Rob added, it is a testament to how advanced hearing technology has become: “This really is out of sight, out of mind. Although there are also slim-line hearing aids that do sit on top of the ear now, this takes it a step further and is the contact lens for the ear – it can be left in for long periods of up to three

or four months, no one would know it was there and those who use it can live their lives as normal. It’s also something suitable for people of all ages.” It is a revolution that patients with hearing problems have found life-changing. As customer Jan Hurry explained after having her Lyric hearing aid fitted. She told Fine Sussex: “I could hear! Speech was more natural sounding and after so many years I could hear my husband’s French accent again, which made me cry.” Lyric hearing aids, including the fitting and maintenance, are sold on a subscription basis. It is the very latest in hearing services and care, something that South East Hearing Care Centres prides itself on.
