A DAY IN HISTORY
Hazlewood Castle has been in the family estate of the Vavasours since Norman times and was first mentioned in 1086 in the Domesday Book. It has remained in the family for nine hundred years.
Further additions were made in the 15th and 20th centuries which have enhanced the character of the Castle - and today Hazlewood still retains its aura of majesty and calm.
The ‘Baron Wars’ during the reign of Henry III saw destruction of the original house and chapel. Sir William Vavasour, one of Edward I most respected knights, commenced rebuilding the castle in 1283. Sir William was aware that peace would be precarious and petitioned the King for permission to fortify and crenellate his manor.
The Chapel of St Leonard was rebuilt in 1286 along with a licence from the King to endow a chaplaincy. By favour of Queen Elizabeth I the Chapel remained untouched during her reign. The Castle opened in late 1997 having been dramatically and sympathetically restored, whilst retaining an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity.
The licence was granted in 1290 turning the Hall of a Thane into a Castle of a Baron.

Included within your chosen wedding package you have your very own private rooms for your reception... The Old Bar The Flemish Hall leads into this room where a stunning oak bar with polished oak floor await. The Old Dining Room adjoins, making The Old Bar perfectly situated for your sole use during your private event. The Old Dining Room East of the Great Hall, the natural daylight, exquisite fireplace, Adam’s work frieze and Ceiling dominate this room. The elegance of The Old Dining Room enhances any receiving line or evening buffet celebration. The Great Hall This spectacular, South-facing room, overlooking the stunning view of Towton Moor, is medieval at its boldest with classical inspiration. Great columns, a marble fireplace, alcoves framing large statues and
a high ceiling where oval medallions decorated with over fifty coats of armour encircle the room; all this makes for a day in history with your wedding breakfast celebration in The Great Hall. The Flemish Hall Great oak doors make for a magnificent entrance with Belgian marble floor tiles leading into the hall filled with hand-carved panelling, a magnificent fireplace engraved with scenes from Jerusalem and an ornate ceiling of armorial motifs. Vavasour Restaurant Our Vavasour Restaurant nestled in the Castle, overlooking the Cherry Blossom Orchard is all about luxury and privacy with it’s own Private Dining for 16 people, elegant lounge, Terrace and Champagne Bar with your own hostess. It provides the perfect place for private meetings, family occasions and corporate entertaining.
CEREMONIES & BLESSINGS
Hazlewood Castle is licensed for civil ceremonies in four private rooms available for private hire; The Victoria Room, The State Drawing Room, The Old Dining Room and The Great Hall. Each have a different ambience and vary in size to suit your individual needs. The Victoria Room Located in the far South West of the Castle, with its hooded stone fireplace, panelled woodwork, Grade I listed metallic wallpaper and dual aspect with natural light. This room is splendid for the smaller, more intimate, civil ceremonies. The State Drawing Room Situated to the West of the Castle, this room
combines grandeur with intimacy with its Adamesque decorations and a magnificent crystal chandelier. The State Drawing Room is perfect for a family private dinner the night before, or Champagne Breakfast before farewells the following day. The Chapel Built in 1286, St Leonard’s Chapel is situated to the East of the Castle, complete with a Palladian altar piece, fine fretwork and glass decorated with symbols of passion. With its own organ, The Chapel offers an ambience conducive to larger gatherings with superb acoustics and a gallery. A perfect setting for your blessing.

What is a Wedding Breakfast? Confusingly, the Wedding Breakfast is usually not a morning meal (breakfast), but is the traditional name for the dinner given to the bride, bridegroom and guests at the Wedding Reception that follows a wedding in the United Kingdom. What is a Civil Ceremony/Partnership? A civil ceremony is a non-religious legal marriage ceremony normally conducted by a registrar. It is often performed in a registered venue instead of a church wedding. We are also happy to arrange Civil Partnerships. How do I arrange a Civil Ceremony/Partnership? Having confirmed the date and time of your marriage, you should contact the Superintendent Registrar for the district in which Hazlewood Castle Hotel is situated, which is Selby. You will need to confirm with the Superintendent Registrar that she can attend and conduct the ceremony on the day and time in question. This can be
confirmed up to twelve months in advance of the marriage and provisionally held up to five years in advance. Who is the Superintendent Registrar? It is not licensed for Civil Ceremonies, but it may be used in conjunction with one of our rooms that is licensed for Civil Ceremonies. It can also be used for a blessing following a church wedding or a wedding at a Register Office.
Can my guests check in early to change? Our guest check in time is 3.00pm, with the exception of the Bridal Suite, which is 12.00pm. Should your guests require earlier access, we strongly advise that they reserve their room for the night prior. Can Hazlewood cater for any other type of event?
