Return of the Sandhill Crane Celebration Weekend

A

lbuquerque, NM— The signal that marks the end of summer sounds a little like the blow of many trumpets high in the sky above us. It is the sound of Sandhill Cranes migrating to their wintering grounds in the Middle Rio Grande Valley and beyond. During the day, cranes find food in open fields, foraging for seeds, roots, bugs, worms, toads, and small rodents. At night, cranes roost on open, shallow sandbars in the Rio Grande. Not just a season for sandhill cranes, other species of wintering birds can be seen in the Albuquerque area as well. On November 12 and 13, come to the Open Space Visitor Center and take part in programs that honor the winter migratory season during the Return of the Sandhill Crane Celebration. Ideas On Better Branding

mall businesses can launch, grow and expand through clear and consistent messaging and marketing, just like larger companies do. Fortunately, creating a distinct brand image for your product or service can be accomplished through some very simple methods. Karen Post, known as the Branding Diva and author of “Brand Turnaround” and Brand ingdiva.com/blog, offers tips to help: • Start with a game plan—Ask yourself, How do I want people to think about my business? Consider your story; what makes your product, service and company unique? Is it sophisticated and established, trendy and progressive,

creative and fun? • Make marketing consistent— Keeping a consistent message across all your marketing materials and efforts can help customers remember your brand. Cross-media consistency is key-from printed materials to website and online image-to reinforce your company’s personality. • Make it yours—Distinction cuts through clutter. Consistently communicate what’s unique about your brand and company. Whether you are at a networking event with business cards, using brochures and flyers to advertise, or targeting prospects through postcards, Staples makes it easy to get a similar look and feel with professional design capabilities

and print experts. They can provide guidance and expertise in customizing your marketing materials and you can leave all the technical work to them. • Audit your brand’s “touch points”—How does your marketing message come into contact with your customers? To help, Staples Copy & Print offers a full range of products and services that help businesses get their printing done quickly and easily, whenever and wherever it’s convenient for them. Tips To Streamline Seasonal Shopping

G

ive yourself some credit if you plan to do your holiday shopping with a credit card. Besides helping to speed you through the checkout line, it’s a much safer idea than carrying cash, which you could lose. Shopping with a card can also help you track your spending and even earn some cash back. Here are a few tips to help: • Before you go shopping, set a spending limit and stick to it. • If you carry a balance on your credit card, use a card that offers the lowest possible rate. • Opt for a card that offers bonus points on everyday purchases, no annual limits on how many points you can earn and plenty of opportunities to earn double, even triple points. For example, the new AAA Member Rewards Visa® credit card lets you earn 2,500 bonus points after your first qualifying purchase as a way of saying “Happy Holidays.” Then, you earn more points with these everyday purchases; you earn triple points for all qualifying travel purchases, double points for grocery, gas and drugstore purchases, and one point per dollar spent for all other retail purchases. Plus, you can combine points from multiple member rewards cards.

The points can be turned into gifts in several ways. You can convert points to one percent cash back starting at just 5,000 points. Or redeem points for gift cards at more than 100 national retailers and restaurants, including Olive Garden, Panera Bread, Bath & Body Works and Best Buy. Or you can make selections from your personal wish list of namebrand products. Another option is to redeem your points for vouchers. You can use the vouchers for travel, car rentals, flights, tour vacations and attraction tickets. You can also redeem vouchers for AAA membership and enjoy an entire year of safety and security. Some vouchers are good for repairs, bodywork, tires and more at approved auto repair facilities. • If you lose your card, call immediately. In many cases, you can have a new one overnight. Be sure your card offers around-the-clock fraud protection and zero liability for fraudulent purchases. • If you pay for holiday travel with your card, be sure it offers travel accident insurance, plus concierge service. For information about rates, fees and other costs and benefits of this card, or to apply, call (866) 665-3581 or apply online at www.AAA.com/ CreditCard.

PH is important because it is the number one cause of coolant failure. If it is acidic, it will eat every seal, hose, and metal piece in the system. This could cause gasket, water pump, or radiator failure. In my shop I have the big heavy top end of an engine that has 1 inch deep holes eaten into it from lack of coolant system maintenance. BTW…$3500 to repair. Level is important because the system is designed for a certain amount of fluid. Also, if you are constantly low, you have a leak. Where water can get out, contaminants can get in. Finally, the system is under pressure when hot, if there is a leak; you have the possibility for explosive decompression of the system. Really bad things happen when you suddenly lose all pressure and coolant. Finally, freeze point. If you do not have the proper coolant at the proper mix your coolant can freeze. Just like your garden hose will split when frozen, your block will pop the freeze plugs when frozen. Usually not terribly expensive when this happens but inconvenient is a mild way of putting it. Next week we will walk through the rest of the check list. Scott “Da Bear” Chazdon, Doctor of Automotive Wellness, owns Maintenance & More Automotive Service in Albuquerque. Hispanic Americans At Increased Risk For Stroke

E

very day is World Stroke Day. Stroke knows no boundaries and can happen to anyone regardless of age or gender with 15 million people worldwide suffering a stroke each year. Of those affected, approximately 5 million will die and another 5 million will be left permanently disabled. Knowing the signs and symptoms of stroke is important, especially for those who may be at increased risk. In the United States, the Office of Minority Health reports that Hispanics ages 35 to 64 are more likely to suffer a stroke than nonHispanic whites. Hispanics are also more likely to suffer a stroke at a younger age, as their average age for stroke is 67, compared to 80 for non-Hispanic whites. Although many Americans do not know the signs and symptoms of stroke, research indicates this is especially true among Hispanic Americans. Cerebrovascular diseases, which include stroke, are the fourth-leading cause of death in Hispanics in the United States. Stroke or heart disease accounts for one in four deaths among Hispanic men and one in three deaths among Hispanic women, yet a

study of 1,904 people suggests that many in this population do not recognize the signs and symptoms of stroke or realize the immediate need for medical attention. In a recent survey of 2,000 women about stroke, Hispanics were less aware of the signs and symptoms of stroke than Caucasians. Furthermore, in a separate study of 25,426 individuals, non-English-speaking Hispanic Americans, compared to those who spoke English, were also less likely to identify stroke signs and symptoms or be aware of the immediate need for medical attention. “Stroke is a worldwide problem and here in the United States the risk of stroke is even greater for Hispanic Americans,” said Dr. Juan Fitz, assistant medical director, Emergency Department, Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, TX. “It is important for members of our community to recognize the signs and symptoms of stroke and to call 9-1-1 if they believe a stroke is occurring.” A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries blood and oxygen to the brain is blocked by plaque or a blood clot (acute ischemic stroke), or breaks (hemorrhagic stroke).

The visible signs and symptoms of stroke include speech impairment, arm numbness and weakness, severe headache, sudden confusion, trouble seeing out of one or both eyes, as well as uncontrollable drooping of the face. The F.A.S.T. Test In the event that you or someone you know begins to show signs and symptoms of a stroke, the F.A.S.T. test can be used as a quick screening tool: • Face—Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop? • Arms—Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward? • Speech—Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Are the words slurred? Can they repeat the sentence correctly? • Time—If the person shows any of these symptoms, time is important. Immediate medical attention may limit the effects of stroke. Therefore, call 9-1-1 or get to the hospital immediately. More Information To learn more about stroke, see your doctor, visit www.stroke.org or www.emergencycareforyou.org or call (800) STROKES.
