Editorial Hello and welcome to issue 3 of Kikked! This issue is bigger than ever before, and comes rammed with over 150 pages of content from all around the globe. Film festivals featured this issue include the Zero09 festival in New York, Cambofest in Cambodia, Animateka in Ljubljana and the online Streaming Festival from the Netherlands, and we also talk to Egyptian-American film director, writer, and poet Suzy Kassem, aka Blue Panther 777. Other multimedia exhibitions featured include Festival Proj(ect) in France, Anime Festival Asia, Pantheon International Film & Animation Festival, and Hypersounds in Spain. Music comes from the Krome Angels, Chief Stockton, Bukue One, Under Voice Records, Thieves Like Us, 3701 and DJ Tsen. Tracks from Chief Stockton (“Party In The USA” Remix) and DJ Tsen (“Reset” Original Mix) as well as a video of Bukue One’s “Writaz” appear on the bonus disk. We take a look at some selected internet radio stations, including TranceMoon playing psychedelic trance, Shake-Fm playing drum’n’bass in the UK, and Full Vibes Underground Radio. Photography this issue comes from Ludy Sulaco with some stunning black & white shots, graffiti and bridge shots from Photohispalis, the Long Distance Vision photo exhibition in Australia and graffiti shots from FilterKik from the Netherlands. There are also two graffiti videos and two photography portfolio videos from Photohispalis on the bonus disk, as well as two from FilterKik. We are very pleased to feature the artwork of Ken Carrano and Heidi Elise Wirz. Other selected art exhibitions featured this issue include “From the Streets of Iran” by Crewest, Malcom McLaren’s “Shallow”, Damien Hirst’s “Pharmacy”, “Moctezuma:Aztec Warrior”, Red Bull Gripped Canvas skate art, Gilbert & George’s “Jack Freak Pictures” and the TelAviv Art Biennial. We also continue our series of articles on Flamenco, with a look at Jerez, the Zonas Cantoaras area of southern Spain and are pleased to introduce Maria Távora. Maria can also be found performing “Siguiriya”, a Flamenco dance, on the bonus disk. Screenings of short movies or long exposures, film concerts, VJing and audiovisual performances illustrate the theme of the esoteric. VJ KOLOUCH (anymade-CZ) visual poetry in animation

Student at the Fine Arts of Brno in the Czech Republic and member arts groups ANYMADE, AV projects LIDI MIDI and 1a2v1 FIUME initiative, VJ KOLOUCH specializes in new media. His creations are focused on illustration and experimental animation, especially on different approaches to storytelling in animation. "I'm experimenting with vector graphics, which is the main basis of my films. The main influences of my language are visual illustration and animation modernist, but I work my language in a postmodern way. I use the means of creating digital or the analog with digital post-production. In my VJ sets, I use the connection of the illustration, animation and graphic design. I'm looking for different forms of narration and d e accroĂŽent meanings that the structure of my set. "

Proj(ect) NAO (Le Citron Vert) live electronica aérien Live electronica Air The original guitarist in the band Neofit, NAO discovered electronic music with the collective Incomplete Sound System. His project "Lektronic, along with Yemka, released on the label Hardest / Incomplete Rec. The current draft of the NAO was born in 2002, a computer at your fingertips and a head full ideas. A worthy heir of electronica and trip hop, he cites Amon Tobin, Clark, or Krush Board Of Canada among the artists who led him to build his world unstructured, which combines delicate melodies and rhythms dark. He is currently working with Marine Thibault aka Cat's Eyes (former flutist Wax Tailor) on creation Electro World. NAO develops music and melancholy air that oscillates between rage and digital flight. It is saturated with genius melodies and downtempo beats in a strange atmosphere. Hypersounds Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía Madrid

The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, in collaboration with Advanced Music, presents Hypersounds; a series of concerts, performances, installations and panels by artists who have produced outstanding work in the field of sonic investigation. Hypersounds includes live performances by Various Production, Umfeld, Tender Forever and Shit & Shine, Dj sets by Spanish and international DJs and two sonic installations by the Dutch artist Edwin van der Heide. The line-up is completed with the Spanish première of the film “Amplified Gesture,” a complement to the latest album by David Sylvian, and panels by Medialab Prado and the Pompeu Fabra University Musical Technology Group (Grupo de Tecnología Musical de la Universidad Pompeu Fabra). Hypersounds will take place in five spaces in the two Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía buildings in Madrid, on 13 and 14 November. Hypersounds is a multi-faceted cross-section of the processes involved in research into sound, featuring various artistic fields such as live music, DJ sets, documentaries and interactive audiovisual installations. Hypersounds presents creativity as applied to the infinite possibilities of sound, an essential artistic expression of the modern production process. The event also highlights its physical and emotional impact on the viewer, and points to new ways of perceiving and understanding its enormous potential. The event will take place simultaneously over two days, in five spaces in the two museum buildings. Those attending will be able to alternate between scheduled concerts and DJ sets as well as installations/performances that will be on display permanently. The line-up is complemented by panels by Spanish technology research platforms investigating music and multimedia art, and the projection of a documentary on the art of music improvisation. This makes for an appealing programme that focuses on the infinite possibilities of sound from various artistic viewpoints. Using the various spaces in its two buildings, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía is providing the opportunity to take a close look at and discover some of the most interesting Spanish and international projects in sonic research in various artistic disciplines, while retaining the enjoyment involved in the ideas and the event itself. The activity also goes beyond the normal boundaries of the museum and its spaces. It reinvents their function, and makes them into a lively space for creation, experimentation and entertainment. Hypersounds is a production of the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and Advanced Music.


Hypersounds Lives & Dj sets Music is the central feature of Hypersounds, with live performances by four projects that are very different, but all of which are healthily unorthodox and approach musical art by means of manipulation and creating very personal sounds: the panoramic British dubstep-folk duo Various Production; the “do it yourself” philosophy applied to live confessional pop of Tender Forever; the superimposed sonic layers and noise with foundations of Shit & Shine; and the exploratory symbiosis of music and images by Umfeld, a project by the musician Jochem Paap (Speedy J) and the video artist Scott Pagano. Hypersounds also includes the mixing expertise of DJs such as Britain’s Rustie and Mary Anne Hobbs (two of the most important representatives of the new urban sounds of the post-dubstep generation) and leading lights from Madrid’s electronic scene, such as Rec_Overflow, Annie Hall, HD Substance and Svreca, who are all sharply defined talents who share a depth and breadth of outlook in the way they understand the art of mixing and juxtaposing sounds. Installations, screening and panels Hypersounds presents two interactive sound installations by the Dutch artist specialising in sonology, Edwin van der Heide: Laser Sound Performance and Spatial Sound are both highly immersive works, conceived on the basis of active participation by the observer, who can change the spatial perception of sound by their presence and movement. Meanwhile, the screening of the documentary film “Amplified Gesture”, directed by Phil Hopkins and with the renowned English musician David Sylvian as Executive Producer, shows us another side to sonic art: musical improvisation, based on interviews with some of the field’s leading lights. The film was made to coincide with the release of David’s latest album “Manafon” on Samadhisound. Finally, the Sala de Protocolo will be the venue for panels by the production and cultural research centre Medialab Prado of Madrid, and the Pompeu Fabra University Musical Technology Group from Barcelona, who will be presenting their latest projects.

SuperTrash showcases a selection of sensational movie memorabilia, giving viewers the opportunity to explore depths of meaning through an unpredictable fermenting of images, symbols, and designs. It is an art exhibition comprised of more than 200 carefully-chosen posters in varying format and scale from the 1930s through the 1980s, that mills together classic cinema, predatory grindhouse, and X-rated exploitation. The exhibition includes screenings of popular and obscure cinema. SuperTrash is curated and designed by Jacques Boyreau and Greg Pierce. Suzy Kassem Suzy Kassem is a Los Angeles-based Egyptian-American film director, writer, and poet. Born in 1975 to first-generation Egyptians in America, Suzy Kassem defies simple classification. As a synergist between eastern and western influences, her body of work captures her multidimensionality as a gifted artist and true Renaissance woman. A master of writing poetry, prose, screenplays, and articles on a vast spectrum of topics in both English and Arabic, Suzy is determined to construct a new edge for herself as a powerfully versatile writer merging Western and Eastern influences with a freshly hip international perspective.

She is determined to follow the likes of Khalil Gibran, Egyptian Noble Prize winner Naguib Mahfouz, the Kerouac cats, Sufi poets of the 70-80s, the beat poetry of Allen Ginsberg and transcendentalists of the likes of Whitman and Emerson. Her forthcoming collection of poetry titled Rise Up and Salute the Sun will be published by Awakened Press in September of 2009 and an Arabic version of the same title will be released in Cairo, Egypt in December of 2009 and January of 2010 by two seperate publishing houses. Suzy Kassem is passionate and generous with words and has a knack and range for building an arsenal of voices. She uses different styles and tones that communicate common street and world sentiments across all age groups - with wisdom and unconfined humor. She is first and foremost a soldier of peace, and in a spiritual sense, one of the first metaphysical poets. She uses the pen as a weapon to bring light to her readers and open portals in their minds that get them to act, think, and feel. Peace is her ultimate message. Love for humanity is the fuel that pushes her to keep writing to awaken the masses and bring the world to synergize – one reader at a time. Kikked! caught up with Suzy to ask her some questions about her forthcoming book and film.


Suzy Kassem Digging Into the Mind of Suzy Kassem, a.k.a Blue Panther 777 When did you start writing ? Super young. My mom said I that as a kid I was infamous for scrawling and smearing food on the walls. What inspires you? You, the Divine - anything or anybody at any given time when my mood feels refreshed and refined. Is there a meaning to the name Blue Panther? Yes. The Great Blue Cat Has Come. How have you found living in Egypt after 10 years in LA? Regenerating. Los Angeles is a big city but it felt like a ghost town with no soul. It had this stale current running through it which made it hard for me to be creative in a productive way. Everyone around the world has this impression that Los Angeles, or Hollywood, is this glamorous city with tons of beautiful, shiny happy people rolling around like in Baywatch. It’s not. The ocean boardwalk is packed with fruits and nuts, you have to drink just to hang out anywhere long because the people look a little “off”, and Beverly Hills does not compare to a 3star street in marbleized Saudi Arabia. It’s all hype with no realness. If you want Baywatch, go to the French Riveria. If you want Hollywood, go to Monte Carlo or even any 4-star street in Europe. L.A tries too hard pull an image that deep down it really is not. It’s hollow and with little originality. Those who are creative over there get leeched by the desperate who ride their ideas like the surfers in Malibu. At least the surfers mind their own. And Egypt? Total 360. When I moved to Egypt, I felt the electricity right away. An old script that was taking me forever to trim in Los Angeles was finished in my first 3 days in Cairo. I knew almost immediately I’d chosen the right place to revive my creativity. There’s this magnetic energy in Egypt, a combination of the musical currents floating from every street and balcony, the mystic, the history, the buzzing of the people, and the humming of the night. It all invigorates your soul. I feel like everything is ALIVE.


Suzy Kassem If you are not moving forward as an artist, it’s probably due to your environment. If you aren’t afraid of change and have the means to do so – try a shift. Be it a new room in your home where you write, a new home altogether or a major move. Keep shifting around until you find a place that stimulates your imagination to run and your ideas to breathe life. Can you talk a little about the film you are working on? A little bit. It’s about this guy that wants to be a singer or writer and he fails miserably at everything he tries, so he preys on this fresh innocent talent to bask in her light. It shows how one cannot stay pure without determination in this day of age. That’s all I’m going to say. Unlike my other work, this is a big change for me as it has no politics. People will walk away from this film with a subliminal déjà vu. How about the film about the immigration to Italy? I was forced to abandon the project for now because it got too political with those involved. Plus, the government was giving us a hard time in granting the permits to shoot. As political tensions ease and new seats are filled in the government jurisdictions – we’ll have a better chance down the road on that specific one.. Your new poetry book, "Rise Up and Salute the Sun ", comes out next year. What made you emerge as a writer now and not later or sooner? A woman once said to me, after telling her I was going to be the next President: “Listen Cookie, YOU don’t pick your career, your career PICKS YOU!” That’s when I decided I was just going to take my time and roll with whatever creative tools I felt like using whenever I felt the urge. Whatever gifts I had would reveal themselves in their proper divine time. In getting to Egypt, - I didn’t have the same access to film crews, know the ropes of the local industry or have my personal team to create things right away. Now away from those things I’d taken for granted at the time, I’m writing constantly on my laptop. I can’t breathe without creating. A friend pointed out to me recently that now my writing is what comes up first under my name when doing an internet search! It just so happened by chance due to my circumstance. So that’s that, my cool cool cat. What is the "How" Project ? The How Project is a foundation we’re building in alliance with hundreds of humanitarian organizations around the world. It’ll be easy for people to find opportunities where they could be useful in contributing to the world, peace, and the planet. The job market is slow everywhere and instead of going back to school or taking a gig that has you doing data entry or some other mundane task – why not go somewhere you’ve never imagined and help make people’s lives better?


Suzy Kassem Are you intending to go into politics ? Yes. In Egypt or America. One day. Eventually. What are your plans for the future ? To be as creative as I possibly can be. Any last lessons? Failure is the path of least persistence. Sometimes things click right away – and other times you’ll do something with results that weren’t up to your expectations. Never doubt your talent! If you think you’ve got something – keep running with it. Sometimes work that you create and undervalue, can be gold to someone else. In Harmony Parker, a film I did a few years ago, I saw so many faults in the film and became unhappy with it. Then a couple of months ago, I’m sitting with a studio head in Cairo with a copy of the entire film. At a point in the movie, he got super excited and started clapping with tears down his eyes. Something in that film I did that, to me, was so little, ended up stirring a super great impression on him. The same film started getting around a tight group of producers. That movie, which I disregarded and underrated, turned out to be a gem in mirroring what my talent was capable of creating, even though I wasn’t aware of it. How so? There's a part in the film where I have this blonde headed white girl from Texas stand up on a bus and sing a song by a famous Egyptian singer. I had woven the song in the script and soundtrack. And in some scenes, some of the other actors would hum or sing the melody - without even knowing what the song was or where it came from. Only an Egyptian can see the genius behind it. And they did. All of a sudden, it became personal. So now I get to pick the story of my choice, with the budget of my choice, with the tools of my choice. And that’s what I’ve been organizing since early September. We started all over again with a different team, and this time… it’s top secret.

From The Streets Of Iran In September this year, Crewest presented “From the Streets of Iran, Works on paper by urban artists in Iran”, curated by Shervin Shahbazi. This exhibit is the first of its kind in the U.S. featuring graffiti-based works on paper by ICY, SOT, FRZ, MAD, and CK1. These artists have exhibited their work in Europe and Australia, and this is their United States debut. The artists draw inspiration from Iran’s rich heritage of calligraphy, visual arts, revolution and the state in which they live, as well as their exposure to graffiti and urban art in the West. Their work encompasses a broad range of subject matter—from urbanism and political resistance to scenes of everyday people and the innocence of youth. Each of the artists practices their own aesthetic. In some works, detailed hand styles overlap with spray can imagery; in others, stencil work and careful attention to texture affect a stylized photorealism. However the individual styles may differ, the works as a group resonate with hope and a determination to realize the promise of a better future from the streets of Iran. The five artists represented have shown their works in Europe and Australia to rave reviews. Their art, which are graffiti works on paper, reflects themes seen in American urban art and graffiti, but with a unique Iranian twist. Inside Iran, graffiti is considered a political crime and captures common critiques of a mostly young society. One of the artists, SOT says he likes to use the wall as a medium because “I like how walls can speak for me.” The exhibit is being curated by Shervin Shahbazi, who has curated a number of exhibitions in LA over the last ten years. From The Streets Of Iran Crewest is a gallery that supports some of the most talented underground artists from the West Coast and beyond. The gallery's focus is on urban & graffiti art created through painting, sculpture, digital, and print medias. All of the exhibits housed at Crewest deal with what is current, and significant within the realm of the urban art experience.

Shervin Shahbazi is a Los Angeles-based curator and arts professional, Shahbazi has curated a number of exhibitions over the last ten years. He has also been the recipient of public art commissions by the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and Los Angeles World Airports to curate exhibitions of contemporary LA-based artists at Los Angeles International Airport. Shervin Shahbazi is also the curator of Traces of Being, Iran in the passage of Memories which will be on view at the Morono Kiang Gallery September 10 – November 21, 2009.


Ken Carrano I was born in Chicago in 1977. I started drawing at a very young age and would frequent the galleries of Chicago as a child. My interest in art was then pushed in a different direction when in the late eighties early nineties I was introduced to graffiti. That took up most of my time for the seven or eight years that followed. The next facet of my creative interest was etched in 1994 when I was handed an issue of Tattoo magazine. That resulted in my first tattoo flash set. After devoting almost all of my artistic time to creating flash sets for the next few years, I began doing work for local and unsigned bands in Chicago and the surrounding areas. Looking to step up to the next level I picked up a paint brush and began painting in 2001 and that has proven itself as my passion. “Woodblock 1�, by Ken Carrano

Besides my acrylic work I continue to do flash sets and on occasion execute custom work for those requesting it.. I draw definite influence from the likes of horror movies, religious iconography, architecture and circus sideshows as well as many artists whos work I sincerely appreciate including Chris Mars,Guy Aitchison, Augustus Rodin, H.R. Giger, Timothy Hoyer, Todd Schorr, Paul Booth, Chet Zar and Salvador Dali just to name a few. In addition to the work I've done for bands, my work has appeared in magazines such as Tattoo Flash, Under Cover, Black Oak Media and most recently i have had worked published in the books "Max and the siamese twins" as well as "Label 228: A street art project". I have been part of various group and solo gallery exhibits throughout the states including the Dirty Show 2006 in Detroit. As I continue to grow as an artist I have begun taking part in many collaborative projects in an effort to expand my artistic vocabulary. In my current work I find myself elaborating a bit more and focusing on conveying specific messages. The setting and specific palette have become increasingly important to me.

Krome Angels Trance – the backbone for dance innovation, amazing global parties and unquestionable musical talent throughout the last two decades has risen to a new level. Three veterans of the scene who share a mutual respect for each other’s music and joined forces back in 2006 to form Krome Angels now deliver their first album: MODERN DAY CLASSICS But who are they? This sonic trio comprises of Brighton-born Dino Psaras (the first Dragonfly DJ, first release on the Perfecto Fluoro label and member of Cydonia and Ayahusca), Dado (the renowned French music producer who has collaborated with the likes of Bamboo Forest and spearheaded projects such as Transwave), and Shanti, once the young prodigy of the Voov Festival with his infamous baselines and originator of the Visionquest 2003 DVD signature tune. Having identified the need for an alternative from what can arguably been termed as the trance ‘norm”, these three came together to create a fresh sound, taking the genre to new realms to encompass breakbeat, techno, house and electro and everything in between. Krome Angels

How did the band begin ? Well, we knew each other for a long time and we always liked each others music. We all have more or less similiar taste in music and worked together in the past, so we knew we could do some good tracks and also its fun to be working with good friends. So the next step was of course to create a band. Can you describe the making of the first album "Modern Day Classics" ? When we can we get our schedules to meet, we try to get together in the studio, in Brighton or Ibiza, but that’s not always possible! All 3 of us have our own studio so there's a lot of throwing files back and forth to create the music. Our first album was really important because it kind of introduced us to everyone, so we wanted it to be unique and have a certain edge, that was a key point when making it. How has the album been received ? Fred: As it is..... A modern day classics!!! Shanti: Joking apart... we've had lots of positive feedback from the album, so far it has been good! Are there any particular tracks you feel stand out ? Dino and shanti: There are a couple, Destiny and rehabs, those are something u dont expect to find on a trance album and wouldnt be sure people would like because its a bit of a different direction, but again we wanted to make original music, which is rarely heard these days in the scene. Fred: Personally, i like LIVE AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN, because it has magical moments in it!


Krome Angels Is there a meaning behind the masks? We wanted to do something different for our live show instead of wearing everyday clothes, the concept actually goes beyond the mask because we do not intend to always wear A mask, we will come up with something different in the future. We just got new suits made by top English tailor Gresham Blake and we are featuring more artist in our live show (product 01) so our show is always morphing into something else like our music.

How did you find playing at the recent Open Air Festival in Israel ? Shanti: It was one of the best party's i have been to in israel. Location was amazing, right on the beach. The people where very energetic, really good vibe. Fred: Hot and fun! we always love to play in israel. Dino: Great! new crowd, much more open to new style of music. You are playing some live dates in November in São Paulo. Are there any other live appearances planned ? Yes, we are doing a tour in brazil in november so we will be playing in various city's over there. Also, this tour is going be a bit more special because we will be playing with our new suits made by Gresham Blake and possibly new masks and will also featuring Product 01 in our live show, so we are going to be 5 people on stage performing. Krome Angels When can we expect the second album? You can expect singles from the new album being released in the next couple of months on our new label: KROMEPRESSINGS, and after that the second album should be coming out. What are your plans for the future (both as a group or solo) ? We will be releasing all our music through our new label KROMEPRESSINGS. You will hear lots of KROMEANGELS, Shanti, Dino psaras, and Deedrah , and various other top artist released on the label. KROMEANGELS's second album is currently in production, and there is also some very interesting remix projects with Duran Duran, but we won't say too much about that for now! Shanti's new album should be coming out very soon. Dado, is also busy with releasing new material both with Deedrah and Synthetic. And Dino, is currently doing rmx for GMS, rmx of top english singer LITTLE BOOTS and releasing a single with Seamus Haji and working on new project call STRIPPER, they will be playing their first live at xxxperience in Brazil. Pantheon Internation Film & Animation Festival Celebrating its 8th year of opening, the Pantheon International Xperimental Film & Animation Festival continues to pioneer within the Xperimental scene of Cyprus, while the Pantheon Cultural Association strives to enforce its annual festival into a globally well established entity which will continue to keep standards and a niche to those interested in the field. The 8th Pantheon International Xperimental Film & Animation festival was embraced by 136 artists, a yet again increased number in comparison to previous years, with a noticeable increase in animation works. With a difficult task to select a number of works to present the festival will present 46 works from around the world. The festival has been spread out into two days, during which the gallery and Tritos will be transformed into an “xperimental” cinema, where viewers will be able to enjoy the viewings along with drinks and a music set which will develop at the end of the screenings. The festival will be joined with a group xprerimental video and animation exhibition entitled “Shootings on Mirrors” by Nikoletta Karayiorgi, Aggela Chimona and Chrysanthy Christoforou. Pantheon Culture is an aim at merging ALL of the association's activities in one common ground: Pantheon Culture. Here, you will be able to access not only the current, running events but concrete information about who we are, what we do, and perhaps more importantly you will have the opportunity to get a feel of local and international artists (visual, musical and xperimental) which allow the local art scene and ourselves to exist and enrich. The Pantheon Cultural Association (PCA) is a non-profit organization initially established to assist the enrichment and international recognition of the Cyprus’ Culture. Based in Nicosia, the Association is directly involved in the arts. Its history shows a continuous support of all upcoming and established Cyprus and international based artists (artists, performers, writers, musicians, film-makers and experimental creators) through publications, events and exhibitions. Its aim is to broaden its functions through all elements of culture, never underestimating the importance of doing so by introducing new forms of culture to Cyprus public. Its activities include an exhibition space of approximatlly 200 square metres where art works are exhibtited, promoted and exposed to a wider public. December 7-13 sees the 6th Animateka International Animated Film Festival take place in Ljubljana. The goal of the annual festival is showcase animation production from central and east European countries to both the Slovene public and foreign guests and animated film professionals invited to Ljubljana. The festival is establishing a space where authors, producers, journalists, students and other interested parties will meet and exchange their ideas and experiences. The festival already brought a fresh breeze to the almost non-existing Slovene animation film community and we are sure that in the upcoming years will help the Slovenian authors and students to bring out their ideas into films! Since in Slovenia there is still no animation film school, we will continue to improve the initial base of the animation workshop we started in the first 2004 edition. The desire to start the Animateka festival originates foremost from the enthusiasm for animated films shown by the Slovene Cinematheque audience at the regular monthly animation film screenings. Quality animation film is almost impossible to find in Slovenia, so we are building up our audience from 1998 and every year the number is growing. The majority of the audience is composed of students, but we pay attention also to children and adults. During the year Animateka take a form of a monthly animation screening with occasional lectures and discussions (when the authors are present). This gave us a good chance to be in touch with our public all the time. In the time of the festival, the public of course raise due to broad media coverage and a festivity mood of the festival. Another important fact to raise the audience interest towards animation, are the discussions with the authors that are hold regularly during the festival. The festival was and it will be hold at the Kinodvor cinema theatre. A completely renovated and technologically upgraded cinema centre, located in the building of an old Ljubljana cinema near the central railway station, is serving as a sanctuary for all those motion picture lovers who want to escape the pressures of mainstream cinema. Bukue One

BUKUE ONE * the bio says most of it, i'll fill in the blanks, skating since 1987, graff writing since 1991. Bowling, business handling, speed scrabble all came in the 90's :) For a short period in the early 90's the parallel worlds of hip-hop and skating went askew and converged. At the time both were still perceived by the mainstream as antisocial behaviors and temporary fads. Hip-hop was not "real music." Skating was not a "real sport." In 2006, these perceptions couldn't be further from the truth, as both disciplines have become fully integrated into the mainstream consciousness, not to mention multi-billion dollar industries. Somewhere along the way their paths diverged and these days they have few intersections even though they remain brothers in spirit. Yet there are some who walk among us that remember those days when hip-hop was an integral part of skating. Tion Torrence, aka Bukue One, is a product of that confluence of underground currents. In Bukue's hip-hop dictionary, there are 5 elements: rapping, djing, breaking, graffiti, and skate boarding. Intromission is the extraordinary album of a true Bay Area original, who in a single leap can pull a 360° kickflip, throw up a graffiti burner, and spit a tight verse. Bukue One grew up straddling the border between Berkeley and Oakland, California. The dichotomy of the leftist college town and the gritty streets of The Town manifested itself musically in Bukue from an early age. "I watched early skate videos that featured music from punk bands like Bad Religion and Black Flag, but my friends were listening to NWA and Run DMC." He was also surrounded by music courtesy of his father, who was a backup singer for Marvin Gaye's touring band. Being a somewhat naïve preteen, he didn't see any contradiction in listening to such dissimilar genres.

Living in the East Bay instilled a political consciousness in Bukue from a young age; his parents were both active members of the Black Panther party. So by the time Bukue was entering his late teenage years, he was socially conscious, a talented skater, and a renowned graffiti artist. His love of hip-hop had yet to translate into making music however. Bukue's entry to the hip-hop game came in the form of a live event production company, whose goal was to merge his love of skating and hip-hop. In 1998 Bukue's company, Urban Productions, organized a 4 day hip-hop/action sports festival in San Francisco featuring an a-list of artists, b-boy crews, djs, and skaters such as The Hieroglyphics, Artifacts, Style Elements, Rock Steady Crew, Shortkut, Apollo.Pro, Mike Carroll, Henry Sanchez, and Mike York. Afterwards, Bukue expanded his business into a record label and tour management firm. En route to Australia as tour manager for Aceylone, the hip-hop muse struck Bukue, resulting in "4 Tha Graff Heads", an ode to graffiti culture. As luck would have it, the art of graffiti was in vogue Down Under, and Bukue had a minor hit on his hands. Bukue saw that he could combine his business skill, hustle, and passions to make a sold living; a philosophy come lifestyle that he has practiced to this day.

I came in to the music biz on the business side of things. I found early that the things I loved I.e. doing merch, booking shows, organizing the tour, tour management etc, most artists did not want to do. So if I provided those services not only would I make the connections, I could earn a living while growing my own music career. Shortly after that I realized the business side would open doors for all my avenues of expression, graff, skateboarding, music, and business. Handle business became my focal point after that. Do you have any advice for other artists trying to achieve the same balance ? ** fall in love with being responsible for yourself. Partying and all that is great but handling your business first and soul controllin is a high that last longer. Talent alone is not enough...

Streaming Festival The Streaming Festival is an international audio visual art and film event. This event takes place on the internet, where films are broadcasted full screen on streaming servers with high image quality. The Streaming Festival takes place once a year. The website www.streamingfestival.com is the main location of the festival. Films are presented in several carefully selected film programs. Playlists and background information on films and their makers will be available on this website before the start of the festival. Anyone with an internet connection can plug into a festival stream from any location, at any given time and start watching contemporary art and films. Because films are presented online, viewers can switch back and forth easily between the programs. The world’s first film festival to take place exclusively online, the Streaming Festival has taken giant steps since SubmarineChannel collaborated with them for their first edition back in 2006. In a technological feat that will baffle even seasoned databassists, the festival streams 190 films by over 100 artists arranged into 14 prêt-à-regarder program streams, from Opera – exchanges between Chinese and Dutch video artists - to Screen Control, which presents projects that break new ground in image manipulation techniques. The event runs for 3 days only, harking back to a more traditional film festival concept, but with the obvious democratizing benefits of a huge and global Audience Without Borders. The combination of carefully curated films and high-end streaming technology, allows multiple users to plug in and simultaneously enjoy this unique virtual get-together. Since the beginning of May 2009 we have initiated a new project which consists of broadcasting a special program every month. Streaming Festival To celebrate this development an offline screening of the first Special Program "Fragments" (curated by Olga Koroleva) took place in Geborgen Kamers (Hidden rooms) in April 2009, The Hague, the Netherlands. The Streaming Festival focuses on artistic and innovative audio visual art and film. Works of art that are hard to find, underground, peculiar or the kind of art that didn't find a place in traditional platforms such as t.v. or the cinema. We're selecting works from emerging artists and professionals alike. Not only is this quality of selected works important, but also the way the festival presents these works. With the support from xs4all (a Dutch notorious internet provider) the festival can ensure a high quality broadcast through their streaming servers.

The Streaming Festival is a no-budget initiative from the Isfth foundation. However, for three years now, a small contribution to the product costs was made by the Culture Funds in the Netherlands. The festival is organized by the Isfth foundation team: Ronald Lindgreen, Igor Lesic and Femke Sleegers. Isfth is a non-profit foundation that provides support for projects that encourage the understanding of audiovisual art. Chief Stockton Chief Stockton is a half Native American/Caucasian producer and recording artist. Originally started off in a four person hip hop group entitled GPD, later diverging to a two person group called Black N Mild, Chief Stockton was the mild of the group. In Black N Mild, Chief Stockton was then known as Big Chief. After gaining popularity across Myspace, Facebook, and Youtube, a lot of interest has occurred over Chief Stockton including "leaking" of alot of his releases, including remixes which he likes to send out at least twice a week. Chief Stockton is currently working on a mixtape entitled, "Music is...My Relationship" in which the mixtape will host as a prelude to his upcoming LP entitled, "It's A Rollercoaster" which the project is still looking for distribution.


Chief Stockton I go by the name of Chief Stockton from the two member group Black N Mild. Being mainly the foundation of the group I have learned a lot about the underground and even entry level of the music industry in three short years. In those years I have produced, wrote, rapped, engineered, managed, and promoted a lot of the material we put out. I personally set up our MySpace account and now due to my constant promoting it has reached over 7 million views and 6 million plays and I have now over 63,000 friends/fans just on that site alone. I also run a YouTube channel, facebook and many other sites constantly promoting my music. After being the main force behind the black n mild, and after the conclusion of our debut mixtape hosted by DJ REDNESS, I decided to take a step back and work on my solo act and focus on myself for a while. So that brings me up to date as of now, I have a lot of material lined up and with your help and guidance I can be ready to push my career forward.

Anime Festival Asia The Anime Festival Asia 2009 (AFA 09), incorporating Animation Asia Conference 2009 (AAC 2009) is South East Asia’s biggest event celebrating all things related to Japanese animation and popular culture. Right here in Suntec City today, a 1 day business press conference took place. The Banzai! Effect, among with other bloggers and of course most importantly, various corporate bodies and and relevant associates attended this event. AFA 09 will take place in Suntec International Convention and Exhibition Centre (Hall 403 and 404) on the 21st and 22nd November 2009 and also a business conference (AAC 09) on the 20 November 2009 in the same venue. Zonas Cantaoras de Flamenco Como comentabamos en nuestra “Introducción al mágico Mundo del Flamenco” el mismo se genera en la llamada Baja Andalucía, concretamente en el triángulo que configuran Cádiz / Jerez y Sevilla (Triana). Aquí no solo se crean y toman forma los distintos estilos del Flamenco (también llamados “palos”), sino que además nacen los grandes intérpretes de este Arte Jondo nacido, amamantado, desarrollado y exportado desde Andalucía. Hoy vamos a referirnos concretamente a Jerez de la Frontera. Precisamente la primera referencia histórica que se tiene de una cantaor flamenco es la “Tio Luis el de la Juliana”. Era un aguador de Jerez (transportaba agua en su borriquillo) nacido a mediados del siglo XVIII. A él se deben unos Cantes por Tonás que han perdurado hasta nuestros días. Dos barrios existen en Jerez a los que históricamente se les considera Cuna del Cante flamenco actual. Hablamos lógicamente del Barrio de Santiago y el de San Miguel. Aquí nacieron y llevaron su Cante por todos los confines de España cantaores tan míticos como don Antonio Chacón (conocido en su día como el “Papa del Cante”), Manuel Torre (también conocido como “Niño de Jerez”) verdadero artifice de los Cantes Gitanos, a los que posteriormente llevó Antonio Mairena a sus cumbres más altas. De tierras jerezanas igualmente proceden Sernita, Terremoto, Agujetas, la Paquera, el Sordera, Manuel Moneo y en la actualidad unos de los grandes maestros contemporáneos del Cante Flamenco, nos referimos a José Mercé. En estas primeras entregas vamos a referirnos fundamentalmente al Cante por ser el origen primitivo del Flamenco. En entregas posteriores iremos desglosando la Guitarra y el Baile que a la postre configuran junto con el Cante el “Triángulo de las Bermudas del Flamenco”.

Volviendo al Cante jerezano debemos consignar que Jerez -aparte de extraordinarios cantaorestambién ha aportado al Flamenco una serie de estilos fundamentales. Brillando de manera notable las Bulerias, que se interpretan con una modulación llena de matices y verdaderamente sublime en su ejecución. Igualmente el Cante por Seguiriyas toma en Jerez formas geniales y caracteristicas propias. En dicha localidad se encuentra el Centro Andaluz de Flamenco considerado la mayor referencia de consulta discográfica y bibliográfica de toda Andalucía. Esta ubicada en el remodelado Palacio de Pemartín y su dirección es: CAF - Plaza de San Juan,1 - 11403 - Jerez de la FronteraEspaña. Se puede visitar de lunes a viernes y es absolutamente recomendable para conocer de primera mano la Historia del Flamenco.


Zonas Cantaoras de Flamenco As we mentioned in our "Introduction to the magical world of Flamenco", it is generated in the so-called Lower Andalusia area, particularly in the triangle shape formed by Cadiz / Jerez and Seville (Triana). Here not only is created and solidified various styles of Flamenco (also called "sticks"), but also some great interpreters of the flamenco are born, suckled, developed and exported from Andalusia. Also on the Seguiriyas, where Jerez takes great ways and characteristics. In that location is the Centro Andaluz de Flamenco considered the top level of reference library, discography and bibliography of all Andalusia. It is located in the refurbished Palace PemartĂ­n and its address is: CAF - Plaza de San Juan, 1 - 11403 - Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. You can visit Monday through Friday and is strongly recommended to see at first hand the history of Flamenco.

Zonas Cantaoras de Flamenco María Távora, joven bailaora proveniente de una familia de artistas con una sólida raigambre en el campo del arte andaluz, nace en el sevillano barrio de la Alameda de Hércules. Comienza su formación en ballet clásico a la edad de seis años y posteriormente se titula en el Conservatorio de Danza de Sevilla en la especialidad de Clásico español. Combina estos estudios con cursos a cargo de grandes maestros del flamenco como Rafael de Carmen, Juana Amaya, Hiniesta Cortés, Adela Campallo, Pilar Ortega, Rubén Olmos, Andrés Marín. En 2007 es becada por la Fundación Cristina Heeren y realiza cursos a cargo de maestros del baile como Rafael Campallo, Carmen Ledesma, Milagros Menjibar, José Galván… Desde muy joven ejerce como bailaora y combina su actividad artística con la docencia impartiendo cursos de baile flamenco así como colaborando con la Fundación Cristina Heeren en los cursos de baile flamenco para guitarra. En 2004 actúa en el pabellón de España de la Exposición Universal de Aichi (Japón), gira por Dinamarca, Holanda, Francia, Marruecos… Desde 2006 realiza varias actuaciones en el ciclo flamenco ‘Miércoles a compás’. Actualmente protagoniza “Carmen” y “Flamenco para Traviata”, en el papel de Violeta, de Salvador Távora con La Cuadra de Sevilla, además de formar parte del elenco de la compañía de José Galván. “Flamenco para Traviata” es estrenada en la Bienal de Flamenco de Málaga 2007, inaugura la temporada teatral 07-08 del Teatro ‘Salvador Távora’ en Sevilla manteniéndose toda la temporada con gran éxito de crítica y público. Gira por España participando, entre otros, en el XXII Festival de Peralada y Festival Madrid Sur. Baila en los ciclos de conferencias taurinas en Valladolid y Salamanca 2008 organizados por el Instituto Castellano-Leonés de la Lengua y en los que participan escritores y flamencólogos de la talla de Félix Grande. En la Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla 2008 participa en el ciclo Compás 4x4 con cuatro actuaciones en diferentes salas y espacios sevillanos. Actúa, además, en Peñas y circuitos flamencos así como en distintos ciclos dedicados al flamenco en la capital andaluza.

Zonas Cantaoras de Flamenco María Távora, is a young dancer from a family of artists with strong roots in the field of Andalusian art, who was born in the Seville area of Alameda de Hercules. Since 2006, she performs several actions in the flamenco cycle 'Wednesday to beat'. Puento del Alamillo

Puente del Alamillo en Sevilla, construido desde 1987 hasta 1992. Cruza el rio Guadalquivir, se construyo para permitir el acceso hacia la Isla de la Cartuja, donde tuvo lugar la Exposiciçon de Sevilla de 1992. Es puente atirantado de pilon contrapeso. Su diseñador fue Santiago Calatrava. El puente consta de un unico pilar que actua de contrapeso para los 200 metros del puente gracias a sus 13 largos cables. Su longitud es de 250 metros totales y 140 metros de altura, y el material para su construccion es de Acero. Hay un puente de reciente construccion en Redding (California), el Sundial Bridge, tambien construido por el mismo Ingeniero Santiago Calatrava. Constituye el primer puente con tirantes hacia un solo lado de la torre. El alto del puente sirve como mirador, es conocido como "el ojo de cabeza de caballo". Es de notar que el mayor grupo de Graffitis en la ciudad se encuentra en los aledaños del Puente del Alamillo, llegando algunos a ocupar murales de más de 100 metros cuadrados de pared. Alamillo Bridge in Seville, built from 1987 to 1992. Crosses the Guadalquivir River, was built to allow access to the Isla de la Cartuja, Exposiciรงon, which took place in Seville in 1992. The bridge consists of a single pillar that acts to counterbalance the 200 meters of the bridge through its 13 long cables. Its length is 250 meters and 140 meters in total height, and materials for its construction is steel. There is a newly built bridge in Redding (California), the Sundial Bridge, also built by the same engineer Santiago Calatrava. It is the first bridge with straps to one side of the tower. The top of the bridge served as a lookout, is known as "eye of the horse's head." It is noteworthy that the largest group of graffiti in the city is located on the outskirts of the Alamillo Bridge, arriving to take some murals of more than 100 square meters of wall. Zero Film Festival is the first festival EXCLUSIVE to self financed filmmakers and the authentically independent films they create. ZFF is an independent organization and registered 501(c)(3) operating in NYC and Los Angeles, firmly committed to helping under represented filmmakers and screening original and innovative films for cinema lovers everywhere. The Festival: Zero Film Festival - Focusing on a niche in the independent film community which has been under appreciated and ignored, Zero Film Festival is dedicated to screening self financed films from filmmakers all over the world. In the age where the majority of festivals are Hollywood marketing campaigns, and even "indie" and "underground" festivals screen financed films, ZFF are here to offer something different. They recognise authentically independent films and filmmakers who take risks and fight the odds to see their visions through. In 2009 ZFF added their 1st annual West Coast Tour - screening selected 2008 films in Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Hollywood and Orange County. 2010 will see the expansion into our 1st annual North American Tour alongside screenings in Europe and South America. Their first event in New York, in August at the Galapagos Art Space, offered three distinct screening blocks. Visitors could watch the films being created all around them by New York’s finest underground filmmakers in the Community Block, the "Made for Zero" and the "Heroes of the Zero Budget" blocks. Their seriously visually enhanced After Party began with music video premieres and live performances. CAMBOFEST: Film, Video, and Animation Festival of Cambodia is an independent, international, private sector movie festival -- as such, it is the first in Cambodia. CamboFest was conceived of in 2006 during a globalization studies course at Royal University of Phnom Penh (pictured), where fest founder and Camerado producer Jason Rosette had been studying at the Masters in Development Studies program. Cambofest is grass-roots and independent, and is not operated by, or an extension of, an NGO or government agency. We are, however, fiscally sponsored by the Media Alliance, a California based organization dedicated to the support of independent media worldwide. CamboFest is run in association with key Khmer production partners. Many of our staff are trained completely from scratch, as there is still not a highly developed film festival culture here. The audiences, though, are fresh, unjaded, and enthusiastic! CamboFest is notable in Cambodia and the region for securing permissions for every movie we screen from the appropriate copyright holders (this is still not standard in the region). We take intellectual property rights seriously; our hope is that the proper IP standards already observed by regional neighbors will be encouraged in Cambodia...with ultimate benefit to the Cambodian media sector and Cambodian and International movie industries. Long Distance Vision : Three Australian Photographers The National Gallery of Victoria will celebrate the work of Christine Godden, Max Pam and Matthew Sleeth in a new exhibition, Long Distance Vision: Three Australian Photographers opening 28 August. Long Distance Vision will include over 60 photographs from the NGV Collection exploring the concept of the ‘tourist gaze’ and its relationship with the three artists. Susan van Wyk, Curator Photography, NGV said the exhibition provides a fascinating insight into the unusual perspective brought by the three photographers to their varied world travel destinations. “There’s a sense in the works in the exhibition that the photographers are not from the places they choose to photograph, and that each is a visitor delighting in the scenes they encounter. “What is notable about the photographs in Long Distance Vision is that rather than focussing on the well known scenes that each artist encountered, they have turned their attention to the ‘little things’, the details of the everyday,” said Ms van Wyk. From the nineteenth century, photography has been a means by which people could discover the world, initially through personal collection and albums, and later via postcards, magazines, books and the internet.

Dr Gerard Vaughan, Director, NGV said that both contemporary photographers and tourists use the camera as a means to explore and capture the world. “Through their photographs, the three artists featured in Long Distance Vision show us highly individual ways of seeing the world. This exhibition will surprise and delight visitors as our attention is drawn to not only what is different but what remains the same as we travel the world,” said Dr Vaughan. Born in Melbourne in 1949, Max Pam began his career in various commercial photography studios in the 1960s. After responding to a university notice for assistance to drive a Volkswagen from Calcutta to London in 1969, Pam got his first taste of being a traveller. The body of Pam’s work in this exhibition is from the series The Himalayas, which was photographed over a number of early visits to India. Christine Godden also travelled the popular overland route between Europe and India in the early 1970s, returning to Sydney in 1978. In 1972, after a period of travelling, Godden found her home in the US where she remained for six years. Godden’s photographs in this exhibition were taken between 1972 and 1974 during her stay in the US. Born in Melbourne in 1972, Matthew Sleeth is another seasoned traveller. During the late 1990s, Sleeth settled in Opfikon, an outer suburb of Zurich, Switzerland. The series of photographs in Long Distance Vision were taken during this time, showing Sleeth’s interest not only in street photography, but also in the narrative possibilities in everyday scenes. Dotted with garishly coloured playhouses, naive sculptures and whimsical arrangements of garden gnomes Sleeth’s photographs go beyond the ‘picture-perfect’ scenes of typical tourist photography. Long Distance Vision: Three Australian Photographers will be on display at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, Federation Square from 28 August 2009 to 21 February 2010. The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia is open 10am–5pm, closed Mondays. Entry to this exhibition is free.

Thieves Like Us

Thieves Like Us is a musical vehicle -- an elegant starship, pointed straight to the heart of the listener. They align themselves musically with Europe, and consider Paris their home (although none of them are French). Pontus Berghe (drums) and Bjorn Berglund (keyboards) are from Sweden. Andy Grier (vocals) is from the United States. They met at a picnic in Berlin. People often ask them to describe their sound, and although they encompass a variety of influences, they ultimately consider themselves to be a POP BAND. Yes, the production style is both disco and hip-hop, but the sheer strength of the melodies and emotional depth of the songs makes them classics. Their first album "Play Music" was written, recorded and mixed in the cities of New York, Berlin, Vienna, London, Rio De Janeiro and Stockholm. They claim the album is mostly about love gone wrong (Drugs In My Body, Lady) and identity problems (Program of The First Part, Headlong Into Night). But no matter how you interpret Thieves Like Us if you have a pulse, you'll know their songs by heart already.

Thieves Like Us met each other in Berlin in 2002. We met in Mauer Park. Two of us are from Sweden. One is from the United States. We were friends hanging out in a vast foreign city. We struggled with the language and the culture. We hadn't registered our residencies at the local city hall so we couldn't even get memberships at a videotek. We were fans of rock and pop music and would try to find places to go out drinking and dancing, but all we would hear is techno and electro. The women didn't seem to like us at all. We started deejaying ourselves. We would play old krautrock (nobody recognized it), italo disco, David Bowie, Iggy Pop, Factory Records stuff, and even new hip-hop. Later on we discovered French filter house and added this to our repertoire. Our cross over dj sets really seemed to bother the Berliners. Maybe it was the inconsistency in bpms. In Berlin, we heard and saw enough electronic music we didn't like. We thought we could do it better so we started our own band. Unable to gain a label or following in Berlin, we have temporarily relocated to New York City. Thieves Like Us will soon be seeking asylum in France.


London Tattoo Convention

The fifth London Tattoo Convention was held at Tobacco Dock, London on September 25th. Over 200 body artists from different countries took part in the convention. There was a huge amount of complementary entertainment and visual experiences to enjoy, including exhibitions, artistic events, live rock bands, burlesque performers from around the world, and a range of traditional East End themed bars, restaurants and food stalls.

Tel-Aviv Art Biennial 300 artists, 150 foreign visitors, 10 exhibition halls and 1 major art event: Tel Aviv-Yafo will see its first international art biennial this weekend under the auspice of the ARTLV group. The biennial will introduce major Israeli and international artists in what is considered the flagship of the dozens of events that will take place in September – the Month of Art of the Tel Aviv-Yafo Centennial Year.

The Tel Aviv-Jaffa Art Biennial ARTLV09 took place in Tel Aviv – Jaffa from 10-24 September, the central event of the September centennial celebrations dedicated to art. ARTLV, a biennial international art event launched by four key women in the Israeli art scene, aims to place the local art scene center stage in the world of contemporary art. This year’s event is taking place in cooperation with the Tel Aviv Centennial Administration with the aim of creating a sequence of artistic happenings around the Mediterranean in coordination with the biennials in Istanbul and Athens. This year, the Biennial will display the works of over 300 artists at twenty different venues and in public areas.

Tel-Aviv Art Biennial The event offers an unprecedented glimpse of the scope and scale of Israel’s art scene. The central exhibition at the Nechushtan Pavilion (near the Neve Tzedek neighborhood) features an exhibition entitled Circus Universalis, presenting the works of forty Israeli and international artists examining visual representations of the modern city from divergent perspectives. The works in the exhibition relate to myths, materials, and concepts associated with the modern city in general and with Tel Aviv – Jaffa in particular: The Nechushtan Pavilion is a Templar compound that pre-dates the city itself, a mix of recently-renovated buildings alongside a residential tower. This location offers a chance to examine the architectural history of the city and provides an appropriate backdrop for the themes examined by the exhibition. A number of works will be displayed in the urban space as an extension of the main exhibition, creating a route leading from the city center to the exhibition venue. Other exhibitions taking place include the Israel Museum exhibition at the Mani – Leumi House with a selection of contemporary Israeli and international works by some of today’s leading artists; an exhibition at the Nahum Guttman Museum of Art entitled Zulu: Hunters and Other Fantasies; an exhibition at the Minshar School of Art presenting Palestinian photographs held in Israeli military archives and an exhibition at the Bezalel Academy of Art entitled Opening – Four Openings in Israeli Art including the works of different artists. In addition, Rabin Square in the heart of Tel Aviv will be carpeted with half a million flowers from 15-17 September. The unique flower carpet – a gift from the people of Brussels - is homage to the history of Tel Aviv, inspired by the tiles and murals found in the homes of the city’s founders. Malcolm McLaren : Shallow

Shallow is a series of original musical paintings or cut-ups composed by Malcolm McLaren from appropriated clips lifted from film which depict people before sex. The footage is spliced, repeated and slowed down, resulting in a hypnotic, layered and provocative work.

This collection of musical paintings - portraits of people thinking, desiring, wanting, wishing, imagining having sex, have been dug out of the ruins of pop culture: pornographic films and pop music. McLaren has likened them to a map of feelings that navigate both the ‘look of music’ and the ‘sound of fashion’. Shallow has been shown to critical acclaim in Art Basel, London’s Royal Academy and in Times Square, New York. McLaren has been a pop cultural icon for over thirty years. An artist in the most post-modern sense of the word, he has consistently been at the forefront. Starting as a young student in London’s art schools including Goldsmiths College and Central St. Martins College of Art and Design, he studied drawing and painting before experimenting in radical, politicized artworks inspired by the Internationale Situationniste, the most famous of which was Punk. All his various life-long activities—as legendary shop conceptualist, Let It Rock, Too Fast To Live Too Young to Die, Sex, Seditionaries, World’s End and Nostalgia of Mud, his 12-year design partnership with Vivienne Westwood, pop music group creator and manager with Sex Pistols, Bow Wow Wow, singer/composer/musical artist with Duck Rock, Fans, Waltz Darling, Paris, lecturer, performer, producer, filmmaker, director, philosopher and politician when he ran for Mayor of London in 1999, are expressions of his art.

Red Bull Gripped Canvas Red Bull invaded (art)ificial gallery, 17020 Madison Ave., to release its Gripped Canvas show on September 12th. Red Bull energy drink flooded the walls of the gallery by displaying over 50 skate decks designed by Cleveland artists. Decks were painted, glued, deconstructed and reconstructed. From noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 19, individuals could bring in their own skateboards and ride in front of the gallery for a skate session. Children 12 and under could paint their own skate deck with Derek Hess. All decks painted with Hess were put into the closing reception from 6-9 p.m. Sept. 26 for a silent auction to raise money for the Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital. An adult after party was be held at Mullens ' on Madison, located right next door, for both the opening and closing receptions of the Red Bull Gripped Canvas show.

These guys who used to play together in a band called Deitylike are back together after years of non collaboration. During this long period, they've been involved in their own projects. Moctezuma : Aztec Warrior This major exhibition at the British Museum in London, explores Aztec (Mexica)* civilisation through the divine, military and political role of the last elected ruler, Moctezuma II (reigned AD 1502– 1520). A dejected ruler murdered by his own people after failing to prevent Spanish forces from conquering his once mighty empire that at its height stretched from the Pacific Ocean the Gulf of Mexico; this is the image of Moctezuma II that resonates five centuries after his demise. This show, the last in the museum’s series to explore power and empire through historical figures, investigates the less well-known period in the life of the Aztec emperor—the 18 years he reigned prior to the arrival of the conquistadors. The display tells the story of Moctezuma (reigned 1502-20) through monumental sculpture, gold and turquoise artefacts, codices, European portraits and enconchados (oil paintings with mother of pearl detail inlaid on wood panels) drawn from the museum’s collection as well as those in Mexico, the US and Europe. “We want to reinsert Moctezuma into the Columbian world as a unique ruler in his own right—not merely as a post-colonial figure. It’s a wonderful challenge,” says Dr Colin McEwan, head of the museum’s Americas department and curator of the show, in cooperation with his Mexican colleagues Eduardo Matos Moctezuma, Leonardo López Luján and Felipe Solís Olguín, who died in April 2009. Divided into thematic sections, the show examines various aspects of Moctezuma’s life including his role as a semi-divine figure or intermediary with Aztec gods, his military prowess and his varied achievements as a ruler. The exhibition also delves into the Spanish conquest and presents an alternative version of the ruler’s death. On display are two 16th-century codices—shown together here for the first time—one of which depicts Moctezuma in chains and the other with a rope around his neck, suggesting he might not have willingly welcomed the Spanish, but rather been a captive who was later dispatched by the Hispanic invaders. “We’re showing how history is constructed and represented and how events can be read in the 21st century. We want to bring less well-known aspects of his life into Western historicity,” says McEwan. The show presents new scholarship on the emperor including the first in-depth reconstruction of a lost portrait of Moctezuma carved into Chapultepec Hill in Mexico City.


Moctezuma : Aztec Warrior An unrivalled Empire From his capital in Tenochtitlan (the site of modern Mexico City), Moctezuma’s empire comprised much of modern highland Mexico, stretching from the Gulf Coast to the Pacific Ocean. His power was reflected in the splendour of his capital’s architecture, his command of the prestigious Jaguar and Eagle military orders, and his sacrificial rituals to the gods. Moctezuma’s world was unrivalled, and this remained so until the devastating arrival of strangers – Cortés and his Spanish fleet.

Fossil fuels on Earth have been depleted entirely, with mankind turning to the next available power source: solar energy. During this time, 3 orbital elevators with solar power generation systems are built, each under control by the Union of Solar Energy and Free Nations (formerly United States of America), the Human Reform League (Russia, China and India) and the Advanced European Union. However, not all countries are able to enjoy the benefits of this system, leading to widespread resentment and war. Arising out of the conflict, a mysterious military organization known as Celestial Being appears, dedicated to end all warfare using Mobile Suits called Gundam. This begins the stories of Gundam Meisters (pilots) Setsuna F. Seiei, Lockon Stratos, Allelujah Haptism and Tiera Erde as they are thrown into conflict between the 3 superpowers and the various other factions.


Movie Reviews Shemaroo Entertainment has announced the release of 3D animation Bal Ganesh 2 on October 23, 2009. This sequel, produced in association with Astute Media Vision, explores the heroic tales of Ganesh's childhood as he battles with wicked and powerful rakshas. Announcing the launch, Smita Maroo, VP Animation, Shemaroo Entertainment said, "The overwhelming response to Bal Ganesh prompted us to consider a sequel and here it is. Currently in it's fourth incarnation, The Sketchbook Project exhibited in October of 2007 with 500 artists participating from around the world. For Volume 3, the The Sketchbook Project toured to 9 different galleries and venues around the East Coast, connecting almost 3,000 artists together through the project. Sketchbooks offers a glimpse into an artist's life, which is why we want to make a publicly accessible library of sketchbooks that people can browse, peruse, and check out. We think that this sketchbook collection has the potential to open a new line of communication between the artist and the viewer, since the experience of making and viewing are both so personal. Anyone can sign up to receive a sketchbook. Before joining our permanent collection, sketchbooks will be exhibited at select galleries across the US. The library will house thousands of sketchbooks from artists that reside all over the globe. We'll be touring around the United States with the collection starting in April, followed by a permanent location for the library in 2010. Your sketchbook will become part of our permanent library. Sign up receive a blank sketchbook marked with a barcode that links it to a searchable database. When you send your completed book back to us, it will be included in the library. Truck Art In Pakistan The under-appreciated, indigenous Pakistani tradition of truck painting has an extraordinary history, starting in the days of the Raj. As early as the 1920’s, competing transportation companies would hire craftsmen to adorn their buses in the hopes that these moving canvases would attract more passengers. The technique worked so well that pretty soon you couldn’t purchase a ticket without seeing dozens of beautifully painted trucks waiting to take you to your destination. While the art doesn’t serve the same purpose anymore, it is still as prevalent as ever and has become more intricate and developed a deeper cultural significance over time. Even though truck art isn’t unique to Pakistan anymore, nowhere else in the world is the practice so pervasive. In a country where the per capita income is barely north of $2,000, it is surprising to see fleet owners (the trucks aren’t owneroperated) spend $3,000-$5,000 per truck for structural modifications that convert these gas-guzzling, smoke-spewing, roaddominating monstrosities into beautiful moving canvases covered in poetry, folk tales, and ‘…religious, sentimental and emotional worldviews of the individuals employed in the truck industry,’ making it one of the biggest forms of representational art in the country.


Truck Art In Pakistan Unlike vanity plates and ‘pimp-my-ride’ style modifications, Pakistani truck art is about cultural history and tradition, storytelling, passion, and sometimes playful one-upsmanship. As such, every little adornment on the trucks has a special significance. Jamal Elias breaks down the motifs for truck art into the following 5 categories:

1. Idealized elements of personal and communal life. 2. Elements of political and national life. 3. Talismans, trinkets, and clothing. 4. Talismans or religious symbols. 5. Obvious religious symbols and images.

Partly due different ethnic heritage, partly due to the unique stories each tribe has to offer, even within Pakistan, each province has its own distinct style of truck painting. While Sindh is famous for camel bone work, Balochistan and Peshawari fleet owners prefer wood trimmings, and Rawalpindi and Islamabadi trucks favor plastic work. The materials, the color, the arrangement, and the overall art style ultimately serves as a cultural representative of the region.

Book Art Gallery Opens in Brooklyn New York. In tune with a growing interest in print and book art, a new pop-up gallery has opened in Brooklyn's DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) neighbourhood dedicated to the art form. Called Central Booking, the space is the brainchild of Maddy Rosenberg, a book artist and independent curator who has worked in the field for more than two decades, and hopes to further expose the versatility of the medium to the art world at large. "My definition of the book is very expansive and inclusive," says Rosenberg. "When an artist says they're making a book, that's my parameter." As a result, Central Booking bears little resemblance to a traditional book store. The first of the gallery's two rooms is reserved for curated shows of work by artists who make prints but also explore other mediums; the current show, "Natural Histories", contains pieces ranging from a sawbox by Steven Daiber that is filled with pine cones wrapped in wood prints of a natural history text ($5,000), a nonprint-related installation of scavenged metal and natural debris by Judy Hoffman ($25,000), and a limitededition copy of “A Book of Works”, an unfinished 1993 book of poems and photographs by Ana Mendieta (loaned by the artist's foundation, it is the only piece in the gallery not for sale). The second room is devoted strictly to print and book art in all its multiplicity. Pieces range from $2 zines to books pressed on metal sheafs, three-dimensional print dioramas, and books displayed on video. The costliest work is a one-off by British artist duo Kahn + Selesnick, whose multidisciplinary books consist of an original fictional narrative presented both in text and in panoramic, digitally enhanced photographs of the artists enacting their story with elaborate costumes and props. Priced at $100,000, the striking blue leatherbound book is the length of a park bench and requires two white-gloved attendants to open—"a performance in itself", says Rosenberg. In total, the gallery offers work by 130 artists, with others including Mary Frank, Joan Snyder and Jay Bolotin, whose book of woodcut prints comes with a CD recording of an original opera he composed. With book art appearing more and more regularly in exhibitions and art fairs over the past year—and with Gagosian gallery opening its own Madison Avenue shop of artists' books and limited editions—there are signs that the recession-friendly medium has been slowly gaining traction. "I feel the most dynamic, interesting, experimental work is going on in books because it doesn't have a huge tradition or baggage," says Rosenberg. "You have a younger generation that grew up with technology and takes it for granted and is not wowed by it, and they are going back to more tactile things, they're very excited about that. And there's also the intimacy of the book." True to the provisional spirit of the times, Central Booking is located in the second-storey space previously occupied by Safe-T-Gallery, whose lease Rosenberg bought out when they closed. After that expires in six months, Rosenberg intends to continue the gallery in a venue yet to be determined. "Sure I would love to sell the works and keep going and help the artist survive as well, but for me it's not about making lots of money, it's about keeping the project going," she says.

Van Gogh’s Letters : The Artist Speaks

The Van Gogh Museum is marking the book launch by showing 120 letters, nearly all from the family collection. These are rarely exhibited, for conservation reasons, and never have so many been on show before. Three recently acquired letters with sketches addressed to Van Gogh’s artist friend Emile Bernard are being lent by the Morgan Library in New York. Presented in the museum’s original Rietveld building, the letters are shown alongside paintings from the permanent collection. Altogether there are 340 artworks, including The Potato Eaters and The Bedroom. Light levels will be lowered for the works on paper, with the paintings spotlit, giving a different feel to a museum that is normally filled with daylight. The display of letters will also flow over into the print gallery. Some of the letters include small drawings (above). Once Van Gogh became a full-time artist he would make rough sketches of his pictures to show his brother Theo what he was working on. The letters, mostly in Dutch and French, provide an intimate and revealing account of his development as an artist. Another show (with almost completely different artworks) will be presented at the Royal Academy, London (“The Real Van Gogh: the Artist and his Letters”), from 23 January- 18 April 2010.


Tsang Tsou Choi Tsang Tsou Choi, or the “King of Kowloon” was a Hong Kong citizen known for his calligraphy graffiti. Although he died in 2007, he is still at the center of interest in the Chinese urban art scene. Tsang was born in Liantang Village, Guangdong Province, China. Traveling to Hong Kong at the age of 16, he was a poor worker and was barely literate. He began to mark the streets of Hong Kong with his distinctive graffiti at the age of 35.

He claimed that he had studied his ancestral tree and discovered that most of the land of Kowloon belonged to his ancestors. He said that Kowloon belonged to his grandfather, in particular. There are no records which back up Tsang’s claim. He was arrested for his graffiti several times, but the police usually just gave him a warning or a small fine. His family disowned him, saying he was mentally unbalanced and a public nuisance and his wife had grown tired of his obsession and left him.

Although his graffiti was repeatedly painted over, he often returned to re-apply his messages as soon as the paint dried. At the height of his graffiti career, his obsessive marking of territory made his graffiti an ever-present aspect of the streets of Hong Kong. The graffiti has been spotted at many places on the streets of Hong Kong, ranging from lampposts, utility boxes, pillars, pavements, street furniture, and building walls, to an occasional car. The contents of his calligraphic graffiti usually include his name, his title (Emperor or King of Kowloon, Hong Kong, or China), his family tree – a variable list of about 20 individuals, the names of illustrious emperors, and the exclamation, "Down with the Queen of England!" His complaints about the supposed misappropriation of his land were not always so formulaic, however. He occasionally demanded that the government pay him land taxes. A Hong Kong magazine named him one of the city's ten least influential people. However, this supposed lack of influence does not extend to the art world. His typography has inspired many fashion designers, art directors, interior decorators, and CD cover artists. His style has also informed the work of traditional artists, such as Oscar Ho. He appeared in a commercial for Swipe cleaner, in which he cleans away his permanent ink graffiti, proclaiming the product's effectiveness to Hong Kong consumers. During his last years, he lived in a retirement home, and no longer wrote on walls. However, his poor health did not entirely halt his calligraphic efforts. He continued his work on paper, household linens, and other mundane items. He also told visitors that he should have been elected chief executive of Hong Kong, instead of Donald Tsang, that 'impostor.'[1] He received international recognition for his work. Photographs of his work have toured in shows, such as "Power of the Word," which began its US tour at Grinnell College's Faulconer Gallery on Oct 6, 2000. Tsang became famous around the globe after some of his works were displayed at the Venice Biennale international art exhibition in 2003. His first major commercial recognition came when Sotheby’s auctioned a board, painted by Tsang, for HK$55,000 (USD $7,050) on October 31, 2004.

He was 86. Art critic Lau Kin-wai said Tsang spent his final days at an elderly home surrounded by family members. He also said that Tsang's last wish was for another exhibition of his work. When news of his death became known, many people went to take pictures of his work, especially the one in Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Pier (because of the convenience of the location), which was later sprayed with a clear protective layer. Many worried that the government would 'clean up' his remaining public artwork. The Hong Kong authorities promised this would not happen and undertook to analyze ways of preserving his works. However, in 2009 there were protests and questions in Legco regarding the apparent failure of the government to prevent the removal and overpainting of much of his legacy. The Home Affairs Bureau maintained the government's commitment to protecting Tsang's works "depending on the actual situation and feasibility".

Yayoi Kusama : I Love Me San Francisco, OCTOBER 1, 2009– VIZ Pictures, an affiliate of VIZ Media, LLC that focuses on Japanese live-action film distribution, will release the second volume of its newly-launched NEW PEOPLE ARTIST SERIES – YAYOI KUSAMA: I LOVE ME – on DVD on October 27th. Artist Yayoi Kusama is an avant-garde sculptor, painter, and novelist and her visual style is often characterized by a liberal use of polka dots and nets to achieve a so-called “infinity effect.” The film documents Kusama’s creative process over the course of a year-and-a-half as she completes a series of 50 large monochrome drawings. Yayoi Kusama has been widely acclaimed by the international art world for more than 50 years. In 2006, she received the Japanese National Lifetime Achievement Award, one of Japan’s most prestigious prizes for internationally recognized artists. In November 2008, her No.2 (created in 1959) was auctioned by Christie’s New York for over $5.7 million, the second highest price ever paid for a work by a living female artist.
