Pakistan's ex-PM Nawaz Sharif slammed for Mumbai attack comments Five Medical Students Drown and a dozen more are missing after wooden Bridge they were talking picture on collapses into a fast-moving river in PAKISTAN

Former prime minister

faces criticism for saying non-state actors from Pakistan were behind 2008 attacks in Indian city. Pakistan's National Security Committee has rejected comments by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who said that Pakistanis had carried out the 2008 attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai, in another signal of the widening rift between his ruling party and the country's powerful military. The committee, which includes the country's top military and civilian leadership, met in the capital Islamabad on Monday, and termed Sharif's comments "incorrect and misleading". Last week, Sharif told local newspaper Dawn that Pakistan needed to act against anti-India armed groups that are operating on its soil, a claim India has often made and which Pakistan has long officially denied. "It's absolutely unacceptable. This is exactly what we are struggling for. [Russian] President Putin has said it. [Chinese] President Xi has said it." The comments from Sharif, who was dismissed as prime minister by the Supreme Court in July over corruption allegations, riled political opponents and the military, although senior Pakistani officials have made similar comments in the past. Pakistani security forces have been battling the Pakistani Taliban and its allies, including alQaeda, in the country's northwest since 2007. A series of military operations have displaced the Taliban from their former strongholds in the country's northwestern tribal districts, but sporadic attacks continue to happen. In February, Pakistan was placed on a "grey list" by the Financial Action Task Force

It faces sanctions if it does not implement reforms by this summer.

Political backlash

Sharif's own party distanced itself from his comments on Sunday, with a spokesperson saying it was "grossly misinterpreted by Indian media". Shehbaz Sharif, Nawaz's brother and the party's presumptive prime ministerial candidate in the July general election, went even further, saying the party rejected the comments outright. Other parties, too, criticised the threetime prime minister's comments. Addressing a press conference on Monday, opposition PTI chief Imran Khan demanded that the former prime minister be tried for treason, and that PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi resign as prime minister. "Nawaz Sharif has hurt the national interests of Pakistan," he said. The opposition Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) party also slammed the former prime minister for implying that Pakistan allowed the attacks to happen. "If you suggest the government "allowed" any action against another country then you are suggesting official complicity," said PPP Senator Sherry Rehman. "Painful to see such talk from a former PM either calculated to divert attention or just casual chatter." Sharif's embattled PML-N party, facing a number of desertions and corruption charges against its senior leadership, will take on the PTI, PPP and others in a general election in July. A verdict in a high-profile corruption case against Sharif and his family members is due next month

Verdict on all three references against Sharifs will come together: judge ISLAMABAD: The accountability court hearing the National Accountability Bureau's (NAB) corruption references against former premier Nawaz Sharif and his family observed today that it would give a verdict on all three cases together. The observation came as the court resumed hearing the Avenfield properties reference after the last prosecution witness concluded his testimony yesterday. Nawaz, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law MNA Capt (retd) Safdar had been granted exemption from appearing in court today. As the hearing went under way, the prosecution asked for a short recess as NAB Deputy Prosecutor General Sardar Muzaffar Abbasi was not present in court since he was consulting the prosecutor general on their stance. When the hearing resumed, the prosecution pleaded the court to record the statements of the accused but the defence counsel opposed the plea. Nawaz’s counsel Khawaja Haris argued that the statements of Wajid Zia, who headed the Panama case joint investigation team, should be recorded in the other two references. Haris pleaded the court to accept his request, saying will the judge do what NAB says only. The court agreed with the arguments and rejected the prosecution’s plea. During the hearing, Haris stated that the Supreme Court should give three more months for the completion of trial. On Monday, NAB investigation officer Imran Dogar, the last prosecution witness, was cross-examined by Maryam's counsel Amjad Pervez. During his cross-examination, Dogar informed the court of NAB's procedure of inquiries and investigations, as well as lodging of references in court. Dogar stated that he had no role in the work of the Panama Papers case Joint Investigation Team. As the hearing concluded, the prosecutor said he will give a statement in court tomorrow on the conclusion of arguments and presentation of evidence.Nawaz and his family are facing three corruption cases in the accountability court after the NAB filed references against them in light of the Supreme Court's verdict in the Panama Papers case. The trial against the Sharif family had commenced on September 14, 2017 with a six-month deadline. The corruption references, filed against the Sharifs, pertain to the Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment, offshore companies including Flagship Investment Ltd, and Avenfield properties of London. Nawaz and sons Hussain and Hasan are accused in all three references whereas his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Safdar are accused in the Avenfield reference only.

Woman left laying on the road for more than an hour, but Police say they were following strict procedures

Is it right to leave a body for more than 1 hour and 15 minutes in the middle of the road after a fatal accident? Fijivillage has raised this question after the 77year-old woman who died in the road accident outside Lami Police Station just after 10am Saturday, was left in the middle of the road until about 11.15am. We have asked Police why this was done as they could have chalked the area where the woman’s body had landed and removed the body to give her some respect and dignity after her tragic death. In her response, Police Spokesperson Ana Naisoro said that this was due to the work of their forensics team and this was also relayed to the family which they understood and no complaint has been raised by them in the manner in which the investigation was conducted. The forensics team in the Southern Division is only based in Nasova and Naisoro says that they have strict procedures not to remove the body from the scene until the forensics team finish their work. We again raised the issue if they could relook at the matter even if the complaint has not been filed by the woman’s family, as it is not right to leave a body on the road for such a long time. Fijivillage raised the issue about respect and dignity. Naisoro later said that they will look at their response time as well.
