Note From the Director: New Extended Hours for the Fitness Center! We are excited to announce new extended hours for the Fitness Center! It will now be open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 7 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on Fridays. We hope that this will give our members more work-out time options, as well as attract new members that may still work during the day. In addition, several night classes are offered during the week including Yoga, Tai Chi, Zumba, and Ballroom Dance. Michael Neel will be here on Monday nights as well to offer one-on-one Fitness Training. (See the classes page for meeting times and costs.) As always, membership is just $10 per month. Please help us spread the word! We have also purchased a new set of lockers for the Fitness Center that should be arriving soon. On another note, I would like to encourage all of you to read the newsletter carefully this month. Cora has been hard at work planning new classes and programs, and there is a lot going on. Don’t miss a minute of the fun at FiftyForward Madison Station! “An Evening At Amqui” "An Evening At Amqui" will take place Tuesday, September 5 at Amqui Station & Visitor's Center, FiftyForward's next door neighbor. Tennessee's First Lady Crissy Haslam will be the guest speaker. In addition to a great speaker, there will also be hors d'oeurves from CRAVE catering, entertainment and art. The Amqui Station Board is generously giving our members the discounted ticket price of $20.00 per person. If you would like to purchase a ticket, please stop by the reception desk.

September Special Events and Announcements Tasty Tuesday in September Fall brings the start of several sporting events, including football! Come out to Tasty Tuesday to celebrate your favorite football teams and have some delicious stadium– style treats on Tuesday, September 17 at 11:30 a.m. Support your favorite football team by wearing a jersey, T-shirt or your team colors! Tickets are $5 and must be purchased by Friday, September 13. Dinner Theater with a performance by the WannaBeatles! The WannaBeatles are a Beatles cover band but are gaining recognition on their own accord as well– they were Grammy nominated in 2012! Don’t miss this incredible opportunity to see this band in such an intimate setting. Dinner starts at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7p.m. Tickets are $18 each and are going fast! You may reserve a table if you have 7 people at your table. See the front desk for details. Sponsored by Phillips Robinson Funeral Home. Paint-a-Box Party! Calling all artists! Come out on Thursday, September 12 starting at 10 a.m. and until 2 p.m. to contribute to a mural created out of individually painted cardboard boxes. We will spend the day painting a train design that has already been stenciled for us so that it can be put on display at the Fall Fest at the Hermitage on October 5-6. We may even help set a Guinness World Record! All supplies will be given to us. Once we have completed our 6’x 6’ design it will be added to all the rest for a wonderful public-art piece. Please join in this incredible community effort. Sign up for this free event at the front desk so we know how many helpers we will have! New Wii Volunteers! Madison Station is excited to announce a new partnership with the Community Based Transition Program (CBTP) through Metro Nashville Public Schools. This program is designed for students 18-22 years old with disabilities and strives to teach them life and social skills. Once per month, this group will come to the center to help lead Wii Bowling, crafts, bingo and even corn hole. This partnership will allow them to use some of their skills for volunteering and increase their value of self-worth. Our first day will be Friday, September 13 where the students will lead Wii Bowling in the Social Room, help with the Flea Market and lead a special game of Bingo. Please join us in welcoming them to the center and we hope to have participation in the activities they offer. Please note the bingo game on this day will begin at 10 a.m. Farmers Market Fresh SNAP and CSFP are two options available to seniors who are looking to supplement their food budget. Jackie Contreras will share how you can sign up for the SNAP and CSFP programs, and how participating in these programs can put more fresh fruits and vegetables on the table. Come out on Wednesday, September 18 at 1:30 p.m. to learn about these programs. Fresh snacks will be provided! There will be a food demonstration at this event so please sign up at the front desk for this free seminar! Also, please let us know if you would be interested in taking a trip to the Farmers Market through the center. SHIP Seminar on Friday, September 27 SHIP provides free unbiased Medicare counseling to beneficiaries. SHIP is funded through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS). A representative will be here on Friday, September 27 at 1 p.m. to provide information about Medicare. Additionally, one of our members, Kay Sanders, has become a SHIP counselor and will be available to help answer questions during the event. Please come out if you have any questions or concerns about Medicare and Medicaid. This is a very valuable resource and event for many of our members.

Oasis Seminar Presented by Cindy Hancock with Oasis In Home Care, this seminar will be held on Tuesday, September 17 at 1:00 p.m. The topic for the month will be “Know the 10 Warning Signs of Alzheimer's”. Door prizes! Photo ClubPhoto Club meets the 4th Tuesday of every month. Free for members! Each month there is a different topic. Card games! The Daily/Weekly Card games at the center include Skip Bo, Rummy, Hearts, Hand & Foot, Cribbage, Rook & Bridge. Come join the fun, even if you are a first time player! Bingo– September 13! We will not have Bingo on Monday, September 2 because of Labor Day. Instead, we will be having it on Friday, September 13 from 10-11 a.m. We will have normal prizes and there will be no cost to attend if you are a member. Still $5 for nonmembers.

Bob Ross Oil Painting Class– $20 for a completed oil painting on canvas! Taught by certified instructor Liz Farar. There will be NO Bob Ross class in September. Framing– By appointment only. Yoga Stretch will move your whole body through a series of seated and standing yoga poses. *Crochet for Beginners– Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. Led by Paulette Spalding. Book Club– Meets fourth Wednesday, September 25 at 1 p.m. The book for the month of September is “The Lace Reader,” by Brunonia Barry. This mysterious fiction is centered in Salem, Massachusetts and looks at the tradition of lace making. The magic is introduced when people start foreseeing events by reading the lace patterns. Copies of the book may be checked out at your local branch of the Davidson County Library system. Facilitated by Del Dorr. Bible Conversation– Led by Story Church, Bible Conversation will meet every Wednesday at 10 a.m. Red Hat Society– Meets 2nd Monday of each month at 10:30 a.m. $15 yearly dues. The WannaBeatles consists of award winning and talented music producers, arrangers, studio players, and singers who have "Come Together" to play the music they grew up with. Since then, the WannaBeatles have developed a following of regulars who look forward to the band's own special version of the "British Invasion". These are the songs we grew up listening to.

Trip to see the Dance Theatre of Tennessee/ Lunch at McNamara's Irish Pub—> FULL TRIP Another special event provided by Music for Seniors, this is an incredible chance to see the beautiful ballet performance of Giselle, a heartbreaking story of love. Before heading to the dance studio, have lunch at McNamara's Irish Pub in Donelson. This is a wonderful trip for those looking for good food and a great dance performance. Trip to see NPT documentary: Aging Matters: End of Life at the FiftyForward Knowles Center. Free lunch included! This is a preview screening of Nashville Public Television's new documentary, NPT Reports: Aging Matters: End of Life. There will be a panel discussion moderated by NPT's LaTonya Turner following the documentary. Lunch will be provided at the event. Trip to the Southern Living Idea House at Fontanel/ Lunch before at Café Fontanella. Start the afternoon off by going to Café Fontanella to have a relaxing lunch. Next, tour the Southern Living Idea House. This “ultimate Southern farmhouse” was designed, built and decorated from the ground up by a team from Southern Living. Trip to Kentucky Downs to watch the races/ Lunch at the event—> FULL TRIP This is the last day in September to enjoy the “Great Turf Racing” at Kentucky Downs. There will be several races that start around 1:30 p.m. It is the only “European style” race course in North America. Spend the day as you wish, walking the grounds, playing the slot machines and watching the races. Eat lunch on your own at one of the variety of vendors on the grounds. This is a full day at Kentucky Downs! Make sure to bring extra money if you want to play the slot machines or spend money at the track. Wednesday, September 25, 10:00 a.m.

Inglewood Trip to Watermelon Moon Farm—> FULL TRIP Enjoy a lovely day at Watermelon Moon Farm. Take time to truly appreciate a day in the countryside, taking in the beautiful grounds, the farm, gift shop and scenery. Madison Travelers to Hendersonville Performing Arts Company (formerly Steeple Players) to see “Tom Sawyer”/ Dinner at Demos’ Go to the Hendersonville Performing Arts Company to see one of America’s classics brought to life on stage! “Tom Sawyer” is full of adventure, fun and even a dose of youthful romance. Watch as one of Mark Twain’s most famous and beloved works is interpreted on the stage. Afterwards, head to Demos’ for a tasty dinner. Saturday, September 28, 1:00 p.m.

New Fall Classes American Sign Language (ASL) Class! Mike Helms, the Director of Programs and Outreach for Bridges (formerly League for the Deaf & Hard of Hearing and EAR Foundation), will be teaching an ASL class starting in September. Bridges’s primary purpose in offering Basic Conversational ASL classes is to encourage and nurture the community’s interest in American Sign Language, the Deaf community, and Deaf culture. Bridges’s classes are designed to give people a general knowledge of ASL and Deaf culture in order to carry on basic conversations. The first two classes will be held Monday, September 16 and Monday, September 23, both at 1 p.m. They will each be an hour and a half long. They are FREE, but we need at least 15 people to sign up! So please sign up at the front desk by Tuesday, September 10 so we can provide this service. World Religions Seminars facilitated by Del Dorr This seminar will be an ongoing event looking at the different religions around the world. In September, the group will discuss Hinduism. Meet at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, September 30 for an hour long discussion about the religion and its cultural significance. Next, head to Sri Ganesha, for a tour of the beautiful Hindu temple. Afterwards, get lunch at Shalimar Indian Restaurant, where you can specifically request how spicy (or not) you want your food! Please sign up for this seminar at the front desk because we will be taking the van. Trip cost is $4 plus cost of lunch. Sign up by Thursday, September 26. The October seminar will discuss Judaism. Beginning Ballroom with Kathleen Phillips Learn the FoxTrot, Waltz, Rumba, and Swing. Classes are every Monday from 6:30–7:30 p.m., starting the second Monday in September, Monday September 9 . $8/class. 4 week session is $32. Instructor is Kathleen Phillips. SilverSneakers Stress Reduction & Restorative Breathing with Kathleen Phillips This class will include movement combination for strength, muscular endurance, relaxation and balance and holistic strategies. The class will move your whole body through a series of seated and standing yoga poses. Yoga’s holistic approach to healing can minimize the effects of chronic disease and improve overall well-being. Check out this new SilverSneakers class with instructor Kathleen Phillips! It will be every Monday, starting September 9, from 3-4 p.m. Bible Conversation led by Story Church Want to learn more from the Bible? Want to know how to apply what you learn? Story Church exists to see those far from God filled with life in Christ. We are all on this journey called life. No matter where you are on this journey, come on Wednesdays to learn, fellowship, and be encouraged! Pastors Troy and Sara Perry have a heart for Madison and everything involved in this community. They believe that every person has a story and every story matters to God. Come see why your story matters. Guitar Lessons with Vern Pilder One of our very own members, Vern Pilder, will be offering guitar lessons at the center on Fridays at 4 p.m. The cost is $15/30 minutes. Where are we located? FiftyForward Madison Station’s address is 301 Madison Street. However, we are physically located at the end of Douglas Street. There is a sign in the driveway that says “FiftyForward Madison Station.” Parking and entrance are in the back.

Upcoming Fall Classes! Reader’s Theater/Acting Club– We will have a Reader’s Theater starting in October. Be on the lookout for details! Trash to Treasure– Trash to Treasure will return in October with a special Halloween edition. Get excited about turning your every day items into a Halloween treat! Spanish Class– We are looking for a Spanish teacher so that we can start up with another Spanish Conversation Class. Look for details in the next Newsletter.
