Challenge Campaign Exceeds Goal! Thank you to everyone who contributed to our matching Challenge Campaign for 2013. As of press time we have raised a total of $6,011. We passed our goal! Exciting! The campaign runs to June 30, 2013, so there may be a few days left to get your gift in. I am also very happy to announce that we are once again fully staffed here at FiftyForward Madison Station. We have hired Julie Reeves and Sam Garlock who are sharing the Office Manager position. With these two dynamo ladies on our team we are once again moving forward. Thank you also for your understanding as they both get settled in and used to their new jobs. We appreciate your patience!

July Special Events and Announcements Tasty Tuesday in July! Come out to celebrate our Nation’s Independence with this red, white, and blue Tasty Tuesday Café on Tuesday, July 16 at 11:30 a.m. This month’s lunch features BBQ, coleslaw and baked beans. We will have a Barbershop Quartet for entertainment. Please dress in red, white and blue for the event! Tickets are just $5 and must be purchased by Friday, July 12. Help Plan the Future With NashvilleNext! NashvilleNext is a process to create a plan for the future of Nashville. The plan, being conducted through the Mayor’s Office, is scheduled to take effect in 2015 and guide Nashville and Davidson County through 2040. Join NashvilleNext speakers here on Tuesday, July 30 at 1 p.m. to hear how you can be a part of this exciting process. Free ice cream and drinks will be provided! New Art Studio Close to Completion! On July 10 and 11 we will be partnering with Week of Hope volunteers to finish painting our new art studio space. These volunteers are teenagers who spend an entire week with a non-profit organization. After the studio is completed, they will also lead a free, small scrapbook art project. Be sure to check out the space after July 12. The scrapbook art project will be Thursday, July 11 from 1-3 p.m. Please sign up if you would like to make the project. It is free to attend, but limited to 12. Wellness Overview with Helen St. Germain! Come join Helen St. Germain, one of our own members, in a Wellness Overview on Tuesday, July 9 at 1 p.m. in the Conference Room. This is an interactive overview on how to have physical, personal and financial wellness. Refreshments will be provided. Come out to see what it’s all about! Madison Community Breakfast Don’t miss the annual free and fabulous Madison Community Breakfast on Wednesday, July 18 starting at 7 a.m. It will be held under a tent outside, next door at Amqui Station. Sponsored by Spring Hill Funeral Home & Cemetery. Free, but please stop by the Chamber or call 865-5400 to RSVP. Murder & Magnolias Dinner Theater Show! Murder, mayhem...and sisterly love? Buy your ticket today for this murder mystery dinner show. Will twin sisters Calliope and Harmony get their inheritance? Double trouble is in the mix tonight! Tickets are $18 and include dinner. Thursday, July 18, 6 p.m. This show is part of a three part series, the season pass is $52. Check out the flyer in the middle of the newsletter to see all of the dinner shows!

Oasis Seminar Presented by Cindy Hancock with Oasis In Home Care, this seminar will be held on Tuesday, July 16 at 1:00 p.m. At time of print, the topic for this month had not yet been released. Door prizes! Bunco MondayCome join us to play Bunco on Monday, July 16 at 1 p.m. The more players, the better the game! This easy dice game is tons of fun. Free prizes for those who Bunco. Card games! The Daily/Weekly Card games at the center include Skip Bo, Rummy, Hearts, Hand & Foot, Cribbage, Rook & Bridge. Come join the fun, even if you are a first time player! Photo ClubPhoto Club meets the 4th Tuesday of every month. Free for members! Each month there is a different topic. In July they will be learning about how to use Lightroom, amongst other things.

Trash to Treasure Craft- 3rd Thursday at 10 a.m. Turn items you have around the house into beautiful crafts! Sign up to join the fun! Thursday, July 18, 10 a.m. Just $2! Framing– By appointment only. Learn the art of framing your own projects, including matte board, glass & moulding! $15 for 3 hours. See Mel Cooper to make an appointment. Yoga– Mondays at 2 p.m. & 6 p.m., Thursdays at 6 p.m. & Fridays at 2 p.m. Taught by Stephen North, Jr. Learn the art of relaxation & health through traditional yoga. $5/class. Tai-Chi– Wednesdays at 9 a.m. & 6:45 p.m. Taught by Larry Lee. Learn the ancient art of Tai Chi to improve balance, flexibility and overall health. $3/class Piano & Voice Lessons– Fridays at 10 a.m. Taught by Geno Haffner. $15/30 minutes. Join this fun group of dancers for a great time as well as great exercise! *SilverSneakers Circuit– Mondays at **12:30 p.m. (was 1 p.m.). Taught by Sandy Wray. Combines fun & fitness to increase your cardiovascular & muscle endurance with a standing workout. *Senior Strength Training– Tuesdays & Thursdays at 9 a.m. Taught by Fred Sandoval. Unsure of how to use the equipment in the fitness center? This class is for you! *SilverSneakers Classic (formerly MS-ROM)– Taught by Kathleen Phillips on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. & Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. Taught by Sandy Wray on Thursdays & Fridays at 12:30 p.m. Class uses hand-held weight, tubes, balls, and chairs. *SilverSneakers Yoga - Thursdays at 10 a.m. Taught by Sandy Wray. Yoga Stretch will move your whole body through a series of seated and standing yoga poses. *Crochet for Beginners– Wednesdays at 12:30 p.m. Led by Paulette Spalding. Bring an “H” needle and yarn and Paulette will be happy to show you the basics of crochet. New Class! Basic Computer Navigation ClassesMike Gann, of TransitionCare For Seniors has volunteered to teach a Basic Computer Navigation Class to our members! This class will begin in July. It will be held on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month from 9-10 a.m. and on the 2nd and 4th Mondays from 1-2 p.m. He will be in the computer lab answering basic questions about computers, tablets and phones. Go in and ask him if you have any questions!

Wisdom Writers Club- Meets first and third Fridays at 10 a.m. Join others in Life Story Writing. Facilitated by Carol Roberts.

Diabetes Club-Meets 1st Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Sponsored by Hickory Gardens. Next meeting is July 11** at 1:30 p.m. Includes healthy snacks! Wii Bowling- Meets every Tuesday at 1 p.m. Come learn how to play! Book Club– Meets fourth Wednesday, July 24 at 1 p.m. The Scopes Monkey Trial will be the subject of this month’s meeting. There are two books dealing with this subject that are available through the Nashville Public Library system. The first is “Monkey Town: the Summer of the Scopes Trial” by Ronald Kidd. The second is “The Scopes Monkey Trial: a Headline Court Case” by Freya Ottem Hanson. Please select one to read or read them both. It should give the group two views of the trial and the makings of a great group discussion! Facilitated by Del Dorr. Red Hat Society– Meets 2nd Monday of each month at 10:30 a.m. $15 yearly dues. Join these ladies for lunch in red and purple gear! Linda Kent, Queen. Quilting Club– Mondays at 1 p.m. Bring your materials and quilt away! Led by Lee Brooks. Plans monthly trips for evenings and weekends. Crochet Club– Every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. All crocheters welcome! Fun and fellowship! Instruction provided if needed. Mexican Train Dominoes– 1 p.m. every Wednesday. Come learn how to play this fun game. Silver Notes Band– Wednesday at 2 p.m. 16-piece plus big band that performs all over Nashville! Trip to FiftyForward J.L Turner Center for "Red, White and Bluegrass" Concert! / Potluck lunch following! Come celebrate the 4th of July with other members of FiftyForward with great music, food and friends. Music featuring Kathy Chiavola, Craig Duncan and Mark Barnett. There will be a free potluck lunch offered by the Turner Center following the concert. Wednesday, July 3, 9:45 a.m.

Trip to Grand Ole Opry for Crossroads Celebrity Concert/ Dinner at Caney Fork River Valley Grille Country legend, Irlene Mandrell, Broadway star and actor Tom Wopat ("Luke", Duke from Dukes of Hazard) and Metropolitan Opera star Kallen Esperian join producer Martha Wright, conductor Rick Gabrillo, members of the Nashville Symphony and the fabulous Crossroads Children's Chorus for a night at the Grand Ole Opry House, the culminating event of the Crossroads Children's Chorus Festival. Trip to the World Music & Food Festival at Centennial Park/ Lunch at Jason's Deli Enjoy a day at Centennial Park, exploring the vendors and listening to music from around the world. The show will host various live artists, cultural dancers and comedians‌ plus vendors. It will be a festival of celebration and cultural extravaganza. Come get a taste of some of Nashville's most delicious cuisines! This is a three-part tour. Each day we will try a different restaurant. Sign up to go on all of the trips to get a great sense of all the aspects of Nashville! Each trip will leave the center at 11:30 a.m. -->First trip is Wednesday, July 17 to Miss Saigon's Vietnamese Restaurant. -->The second trip is Wednesday, July 24 to Viener Fest for German/Austrian cuisine! -->The third outing is on Wednesday, July 31. This will be to Sitar Indian Restaurant. The total for this trip package is $10 + the cost of lunch for each day. Please join Cora for this wonderful adventure! July Announcements Welcome New Staff! Samantha Garlock, who is better known as Sam, is a recent transplant to the Nashville area. She and her husband relocated here from Ft. Stewart, GA after his service to the Army was up. They came for music, for school, and for the few extra seasons Tennessee could offer that Georgia could not. Sam has fallen in love with her new home and is very excited to start working and making relationships at FiftyForward as the new morning Office/Volunteer Manager. Please make her feel welcome! SilverSneakers Participation Challenge Still Going! We have two more months left in our SilverSneakers Participation Challenge! We are doing a great job so far. SS members– keep participating and keep swiping your card every time you come to the center! If we have the highest increase in participation we have a chance to win a $250 gift card for a party. So get all of your SilverSneakers friends to come to the center and swipe their cards! Welcome New Advisory Council Members We are happy to announce our newly elected members to the Advisory Council of FiftyForward Madison Station: Carole Petty, Sandy Wray, Helen St. Germain, Helen Rose, Joyce Fottrell, Mary Ann Williams, Mike Gann, Jerry Fishpaw and Brandon Maxwell as a Community Representative. Additionally, we would like to thank the following representatives whose term of service is up: Don McKay, Jan McGill, Joann Nichols and Imogene Warner. Thank you all for your service to our center! CPR Training Offered at Center All staff will be receiving CPR/AED training with the Red Cross on Friday, July 19 from 10 a.m-2 p.m. Members interested in taking this course may do so for $55. Please see Kelsey if you are interested.

Help A Child Learn to Read! Volunteer with Friends Learning in Pairs Make a difference in the lives of children by tutoring and mentoring students in grades K-4

Where are we located? FiftyForward Madison Station’s address is 301 Madison Street. However, we are physically located at the end of Douglas Street. There is a sign in the driveway that says “FiftyForward Madison Station.” Parking and entrance are in the back.
