October 2013 Happenings FiftyForward Madison Station 301 Madison St, Madison, TN 37115 ph:(615) 860-7180 www.fiftyforwardmadisonstation.org

Hours of Operation: Monday—Thursday, 7a.m.—4:30 p.m. (Fitness Center open until 7 p.m.), Fridays until 3:30p.m.

New Bus Update! As many of you know, we were able to secure enough funds during out matching campaign to purchase a new 12-passenger van. After much research, we have discovered that it is possible for us to purchase a barely used 21-passenger bus for just a little more money. Since our center has close to 900 members, and almost every trip is full with a waiting list, I feel that the larger bus will better meet our needs. What this means for us is that we are going to raise a little more money in order to make this happen. FiftyForward has agreed to “match” all monies coming in that are designated for the bigger bus. We will also be having a “Showcase” on November 14 where all the proceeds from the ticket sales will go towards this purchase. I am excited to see this happen—we will really be traveling in style! Please feel free to come talk with me if you have any questions. Kelsey Mahaffey Center Director

Sad Staffing News We are sad to have to say goodbye to Cora Lavin, our Program Director. Cora has received a Fulbright grant to teach English and dance in Venezuela for a year. This is an amazing opportunity for her—you can read all about it inside the newsletter. We have enjoyed working with Cora these past six months and are sad to see her go!

Our Mission: FiftyForward enriches the lives of adults 50+ by providing pathways to health, wellwell-being and lifelong learning.

October Announcements Cora’s Bittersweet “Adios” As Kelsey said in her opening note, I will be stepping down as Program Director on October 15 to pursue a Fulbright grant in Venezuela for a year. It was a difficult decision for me because I have grown attached to the staff, members and volunteers of Madison Station who make this center so special. However, this has been a longtime dream of mine and I feel I have to take it at this time. I will be living in Merida, Venezuela, teaching English, giving cultural presentations on the United States and its culture, as well as teaching dance. The Fulbright was established to increase mutual understanding between the United States and the host country and I was one of two people chosen to go to Venezuela to promote this understanding. I am very sad to be leaving this job and such an amazing group of people, so thank you for making my time here so memorable. On the other hand, I am excited about this new opportunity and am happy to talk to anyone who has questions about what I will be doing. $10 OFF during Membership Week! During the week of October 14– October 18 get $10 off of your 2014 membership fee! Mark your calendars now so you can take advantage of this great deal! We will have Membership Committee members helping with the sign-up process, including during October Tasty Tuesday. Please renew your membership during this week so we can keep our numbers growing. Skyline taking over Lunch & Learns We are excited to announce that Skyline Medical Center has agreed to take over the Lunch & Learns! Like in the past, the lunches will be free but you must sign up in advance in order to get a seat. Be on the lookout for details on when the first Skyline Lunch & Learn will take place! Another World Religion Seminar facilitated by Del Dorr! This will be the second seminar in the series facilitated by Del Dorr. This month, Del will discuss Buddhism. The seminar will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, October 21. There will be an hour long discussion about the religion and its cultural significance and then Stephen North will come in and give a overview and demonstration of yoga. Afterwards, get lunch at Hibachi Chinese Restaurant. Please sign up for this seminar at the front desk. There is no cost for this trip except to pay for your own lunch. Sign up by Thursday, October 18. The November seminar will discuss Judaism. An Extra Lawyer, and Day, for Legal Aid! We are excited to announce that we have another Lawyer, Barbara Moss, who will be contributing her time to FiftyForward Madison Station. She will be available every fourth Monday of the month from 1-4 p.m. at half hour intervals. Please sign up at the front desk for this free service. Barbara is the founder of Elder Law of Nashville. She practices Elder Law and Probate. We are very lucky to have her at our center, so please take advantage of this service!

And we would like to thank…. For the month of September we would like to thank: Windlands East for Tasty Tuesday and Dinner Show desserts, Phillip Robinson for being the sponsor of the WannaBeatles Dinner Show, Gilda’s Kids for volunteering for the Dinner Show, and HighPoint Homecare and Family Staffing Solutions for being Bingo Sponsors.
