From the Director’s Desk Don’t Miss a Single Day—Renew Your Membership for 2014 As you will see in our jam-packed newsletter, there is a lot going on at FiftyForward Madison Station! We don’t want you to miss a single day of our fabulous classes, trips and events, so be sure to renew your membership for 2014. All members who renew by December 31 will receive $5 off their membership. SilverSneakers members and those that receive financial assistance (proof of income required) also need to fill out a new membership form. As always, membership is just $10 per month via bank draft, or pay for the whole year up front for $120. We thank you for your 2013 membership and hope to see all of you in 2014! Also, please remember that the center will be closed on December 24, 25, and 26 for the holidays. We will re-open on Friday, December 27. We will also be closed on January 1 for New Year’s Day. Holiday Festivities Christmas Dinner Show—Tuesday, December 10 The Christmas Dinner Show on Tuesday, December 10 will feature Chaffin’s Barn performing “A Sanders Family Christmas”. Don’t miss this popular comedic musical featuring Christmas carols, classic hymns, and side-splitting yuletide stories. Dinner served at 6 p.m., show at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 and must be purchased by Thursday, December 5. Hurry, it’s almost sold out! Sponsored by Vanco Manor. Toy Drive Wrapping Party—Wednesday, December 11 Wednesday, December 11, Madison Station will host a gift wrapping party to benefit children of Veterans through The Nashville Vet Center. Refreshments, prizes, and a raffle for a $25 gift card await those who volunteer to help wrap the gifts. If you would like to help this effort by donating wrapping paper, that would be welcome as well. Sign up at the office for this free event. Christmas Cookie Baking with Sam—Friday, December 13 Come have a blast messing in the kitchen and listening to Christmas music with Sam on Friday, December 13 at 10:00 a.m. All baking supplies will be provided! We are making these tasty confections to satisfy those who attend The Spirit of Christmas Showcase on Saturday, December 14. Those who help bake may take home a dozen cookies of their choice! The Spirit of Christmas Showcase—Saturday, December 14 “Oh” and “Ah” to the sweet sight of Dance East’s dancers (8-12 years old) performing their well practiced steps. Then support our Readers Theater Group in their first ever production, the one act play Last Stop ‘Til Christmas. This free event on Saturday, December 14 at 2:00 p.m. features a cookie and cider intermission. ‘Wrapping with Sarah’—Monday, December 16 and Thursday, December 19 We still need your gift box and tissue paper donations to support FiftyForward Madison’s ‘Wrapping with Sarah Roberts‘ event! Sarah, who was a professional wrapper for 8 years, will be generously offering a gift wrapping service on Monday, December 16 and Thursday, December 19 from 10 –2. These professional services will be $3 per gift. All proceeds are donated to the Center and will be doubled to support the purchase of a new bus! Tips are welcome and also go towards the bus. Tasty Tuesday Café—Tuesday, December 17 Tasty Tuesday Café: December 17th Holiday Potluck presents “Holiday Songs and Stories” with Eddie K. Come at 11 a.m. for a Vendor Fair and to register for door prizes. Stay until the end to win, because you must be present to win the fabulous gifts. In the spirit of the season, Tasty Tuesday is FREE to attend this month. All you need to do to attend is bring a side dish to share that will serve 6-8 people and sign up at the front desk. The Center will provide the main course, ham, and the vendors will provide dessert. Flip to the back page for a chance to win “The First Gift of Christmas”...

Holiday Toy Drive Through Friday, December 6, we are accepting donations of toys and small items, such as socks and stocking stuffers, to benefit the children of veterans in partnership with The Veterans Center. Oasis Seminar Presented by Cindy Hancock with Oasis In Home Care, this seminar will be held on Tuesday, December 19 at 1:00 p.m. This month’s seminar will be “Recognize Signs of a Heart Attack”. Bob Ross Oil Painting Class– $20 for a completed oil painting on canvas! Taught by certified instructor Liz Farar. The class will be on Monday, December 2 at 9 a.m. Please sign up and pay at the front desk by Tuesday, November 26. January classes will return to the 4th Mondays of the month. Framing– By appointment only. Learn the art of framing your own projects, including matte board, glass & moulding! $15 for 3 hours. See Mel Cooper to make an appointment. Yoga– Mondays at 2 p.m. & 6 p.m., Thursdays at 6 p.m. & Fridays at 2 p.m. Taught by Stephen North, Jr. Learn the art of relaxation & health through traditional yoga. $5/class. Diabetes Club- Meets 1st Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Sponsored by Hickory Gardens. Next meeting is December 5 at 1:30 p.m. Includes healthy snacks and a quarterly giveaway! Must be present to register for the give away. Book Club– In December the Book Club will meet earlier than usual on Wednesday, December 4 at 1:30, in respect to the busy holiday season. The selection for this meeting will be A Christmas Garland by Anne Perry which is available through the local library. Facilitated by Del Dorr. Bible Conversation– Led by Story Church, Bible Conversation will meet every Wednesday at 10 a.m. Red Hat Society– Meets 2nd Monday of each month at 10:30 a.m. $15 yearly dues. Personal TrainerMichael Neel is a Certified Personal Trainer. He will be available to work with you on Mondays from 4:30-7:00 p.m. He will be happy to show you how to safely and effectively use the fitness equipment in the Fitness Center. Opryland Light and Decor Tour Have a delectable dinner at Macaroni Grill before heading off to walk the stunning halls of The Opryland Hotel, now a winter fairyland of lights and decoration for the holiday season. *Note: this trip is spent mostly on your feet and includes walking. Monday, December 2, 4:00 p.m. $4 + Dinner The Dancing Lights of Christmas at Jellystone Park For those of you who would rather not walk Opryland: Head to Caney Fork River Valley Grille for finger-licking good vittles. Follow up with a van ride through Jellystone Park's annual Dancing Light Spectacular and Santa Claus village. Tune your radio to the suggested radio station and be awed as the lights dance in synchronization to the music. Wednesday, December 4, 4:00 p.m. $8 + Dinner Music City Center Tour Meet up with members of FiftyForward College Grove to take a guided tour of the brand new Music City Center. Did you know that Nashville was voted by Conde Nast Traveler as one of the top five cities to visit in 2013? The Music City Center is a spectacular new building designed to meet the attention and growth the city will attract as a Top Five City. It can host anything from a major national convention to executive board meetings to exhibitions of all types. Afterwards, revel in the true southern tradition of barbeque done cafeteria-style at Peg Leg Porker. *Note: This is a lot of walking!* Friday, December 6, 9:15 a.m. $5 + Lunch Inglewood to The Rawlings in Joelton, TN and Gift Exchange Set on a private, two-hundred acre estate running along scenic Marrowbone Creek, The Rawlings has provided a scenic and historic atmosphere for Nashville events for almost 80 years. Thrill in the delights of a banquet style menu of cranberry salad, grilled, boneless breast of chicken with rosemary, pineapple glazed sweet potatoes with marshmallows, cornbread dressing/ gravy, green beans, homemade biscuits and butter, coffee, iced tea, and chocolate chip cake with ice cream. Thursday, December 12, 11:30 a.m. $26 (includes Lunch) Renaissance Players perform 'Twas the Night Before Christmas Step one, travel to Dickson, TN to see the play 'Twas the Night Before Christmas at The Renaissance Center. Step two, enjoy the signature lunch provided by the theater. Step three, explore the Tennessee Artisan Market, housed in the same center, featuring art, crafts and handmade goods made exclusively by over 190 Tennessee artisans. Saturday, December 14, 9:45 a.m. $22 (includes Lunch) Grayline Bus Christmas Lights Tour WOO WOO! Take a ride on the Tex Express! First, ingest a hearty dinner at the Brentwood Waffle House. Then, visit the lovely Christmas lights of the Nashville area neighborhoods. We'll be traveling on a Grayline bus this time, so as many as 25 people can sign up for this trip! Wednesday, December 18, 5:00 p.m. $11 + Dinner Nashville Ballet performs Nashville's Nutcracker Experience the beauty and magic of a professional ballet company, live music from a full symphony and the opportunity to celebrate the spirit of the season through the long standing holiday tradition of the Nashville Ballet’s production of Nashville’s Nutcracker. Thereupon, retire for an early supper at Coco's Italian Market, the 2012 recipient of Toast Of Music City's 'Best Italian Restaurant' award! Holiday Goings On Freedom from Smoking Sessions Cristina Romine, Smoking Cessation Specialist with HealthSpring of Tennessee, will be offering free smoking cessation sessions at Madison Station in December and January. These will be held in the Conference Room every Friday beginning on December 6 and continuing through January 17. There will be one extra session on Monday, December 30 as well. History of Christianity with Del Dorr In December, Del will present the fourth seminar in the World Religions series, this time on Christianity. The seminar will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, December 9. There will be an hour long discussion about the religion and its cultural significance and then the group will head over to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and then to City Road United Methodist Church. Afterwards, get lunch at Ryan’s. Please sign up at the front desk by Thursday, December 5. There is a $4 van fee for this trip. The January seminar will discuss Islam. Free Relaxation Appointments Becoming worn out from the hustle and bustle of the holiday season? Theresa Wolle with Beauti Control is offering FREE pampering services on Thursday, December 19 at 1:30. This “Shop from Your Seat, Not Your Feet” event allows you to treat yourself to a variety of services such as neck wraps and hand or lip treatments, to name a few. Each appointment will last approximately 30 minutes. She only has a limited number of appointment slots. Be sure to sign up at the front desk to secure your spot. Inclement Weather Policy In the event Davidson County schools close due to inclement weather, all center programming will be canceled. However, the center itself will remain open. Center Directors may use their discretion as to whether the center should be closed early or open late, thereby allowing members and staff extra time to/ from home safely. Friday Night Music Jam Fare Every Friday night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. come and enjoy the "sounds and tastes" of the Friday Night Music Jam. As of Friday, December 6, the "tastes" will undergo a makeover and will now consist of pre-wrapped snacks, candy, pastries, potato chips, crackers, cold drinks, coffee, green tea and water. The Music Jam would like to express its appreciation of the ongoing support it has received and that they know they will continue to receive. Tax Appointments We are ready very early this time! We can now accept your tax appointments for the 2014 tax season. AARP tax preparation volunteers will be here beginning February 5th to help prepare your 2013 taxes. These are free services so make sure to get your appointment.

Where are we located? FiftyForward Madison Station’s address is 301 Madison Street. However, we are physically located at the end of Douglas Street. There is a sign in the driveway that says “FiftyForward Madison Station.” Parking and entrance are in the back.

$1000 Towards a New Bus!! The Rising Stars Showcase featuring Gilda’s talented Ambassadors and Social Graces helped to raise over $500 towards the purchase of a new bus. This amount will be matched by FiftyForward giving us a total of $1036 towards our goal! Thank you Gilda’s Ambassadors and Social Graces for volunteering your time and talent to this effort! We need you... ...to bake for December’s Flea Market! The Fundraising table at every flea market offers delicious bread, cookies and other sweeties for purchase. Please see Sam if you are interested in providing baked goods for the next Flea Market on Friday, December 13. Suggestion Box *This is a reminder to not turn up the chairs as it is a safety issue. If you would like to reserve a table for an event please come to the front office. *Repainting the parking lot is being addressed in the Capital Improvement Plan.
