Highlights... Why strength training? Research has shown that strengthening exercises are both safe and effective for women and men of all ages. In fact, people with health concerns, including heart disease or arthritis, often benefit the most from an exercise program that includes lifting weights a few times a week. Strength training, in conjunction with regular aerobic exercise, can also have a profound impact on a person’s mental and emotional health. There are numerous benefits to strength training regularly, particularly as you grow older. It can be very powerful in reducing the signs and symptoms of numerous diseases and chronic conditions such as: Arthritis Diabetes Osteoporosis Obesity Back pain Depression One of our members, Tina Chilton, has been coming three times a week to our strength training class and here is what she had to say:

“My name is Tina and I am 76 years old. Taking the strength class at FiftyForward has made me a stronger person physically and mentally. I can lift things I used to struggle with and I can do it with a smile on my face instead of a frown.”

Director’s Notes Dear FiftyForward Donelson Members!!! Thank you so much for the opportunity to serve you for the past 15 years. The memories I have made here I will cherish forever. It's hard to believe my little girl was only 7 when I started here and now she is 21 and completing her last year of college. It is appropriate that my last job here will be the Labor Day Bar-b-Que and I hope you will help me make this the best one ever! Please come to the opening ceremony at 10:00 a.m. and help me celebrate. Someone asked me the other day what I am most proud of here. There are so many things but here is a list of my top accomplishments. 1) Co- Creating and for the past 4 years running SCA/The Larry Keeton Theatre which completed this past year with a small surplus and selling a record number of season tickets. Most of all having a part in naming the theatre after the most wonderful volunteer in the whole world, Mr. Larry Keeton. To be able to be a part of honoring Larry in this way was a huge honor!!! 2) Having the best volunteers. We were one of the few senior centers that actually had our front office run by volunteers, and our advisory council and instructors and all of our special event instructors. 3) Finally, having the renovations done and almost complete. It makes me so happy when people come into our center today and comment on how lovely the front entrance is and how great the bathrooms are. 4) Helping to establish the farmer's market in this location. Frank Trew has done all of the work and I often think about how proud his mother Katherine would be with all he has done for this community. My part was just agreeing to see it operate here at this location. It is also a fundraiser for FiftyForward Donelson so remember when you support the Farmer's Market, you support the Center. 5) I'm proud of helping to incubate various businesses and organizations in our community that all started out of this building. Some have prospered and others haven't but I always tried to help get different businesses started here that would benefit the operation of this center. 6) I have been honored to have some of the

most amazing staff members over the years and I’m so proud when someone that works here gets promoted such as Liz Martin, Linda Chabot and Now Lisa Maddox. For the past 15 years this has been more than a job to me– it was my passion. I have accepted a job with McKendree village and will be starting there in September. come on down the road and visit me. I plan to continue as a volunteer here because Donelson Station will always hold a spcial place in my heart. Love ya,

Jane I hope everyone can come out to celebrate Jane ’s last day with us this Friday, August 30 at 10:00 a.m. She will be dearly missed by her staff and members that she has worked with over the years. I, personally, have enjoyed working with her for the last six years and I think I have learned from one of the best!
