December Highlights... Where were you on December 7, 1941? We interviewed Shiela Walsh, A FiftyForward Donelson Station member, who experienced Pearl Harbor first hand. Shiela is a native Hawaiian who graciously shared her story about her experience on December 7, 1941; the day Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Imperial Japanese Navy. Tell us about what you remember on that particular day, December 7, 1941? SW: “I was just six-years-old and getting ready for church. We went to church and they shut the doors. We heard loud noises that sounded like firecrackers. You heard stuff like that a lot in Hawaii as we were celebrating all of the time. After church, we went home and no one was talking much. I had a friend who was Japanese. We played together all the time. She could not come to play this day and I could not understand why. We used to go to the beach and swim in the ocean. I have tried over the years to find her but never could. For a long time I could not go out and play. My daddy was a maintenance man at The Pearl Harbor. He helped clean up after The attack. There were people trapped and banging on the inside of ships. You could hear them banging.” With tears in her eyes, Shiela continued, “there was a big ditch along side of the Harbor and they put bodies in the ditches as they got them out. A lot pf people

Shiela pauses and continues, “I do not like talking about this as it brings back so many memories . As a little girl I can remember we had to wear tags around our neck. When we did go out, we had to be home by 7:00 p.m. We did not have beef to eat anymore. It went to the military. We lived on sea weed, raw fish, bananas, avocados and papaya. I have never really been sick other that a cold. Maybe it was all of that good eating after all. Back then, since we could not go to the ocean to swim, we would go to the mountains to find water to swim and slide sown mud. It was a sad time and I do not like to talk about those memories”. Even though Shiela has lived in the United States for years, she still can remember those days following the tragedy that touched the lives of so many people 72 years ago. On that tragic day 2,402 military individuals were killed and 1247 wounded. Franklin D. Roosevelt's' famous statement still stands true today; “A date which will live in infamy” . Thank you Shiela, for sharing your story!

Office Staff Notes Happy Holidays to all! Wow! This year has gone by so fast. We have experienced so many changes at Donelson Station and we are so excited about the year ahead. We want to thank all of our volunteers who continue to dedicate their time so that FiftyForward is able to continue to provide the great services that we do. We could not do it without you. We continue to strive to make things easier and better for all of our members. Our luncheons and trips continue to draw great attendance, however, some of our other activities seem to lack attendees to continue, these would include bowling and game day on Wednesdays. Hopefully this type of activity will increase this winter. We need your help in making suggestions as to what type activity or interest you would like to see at Donelson. Please put any thoughts or ideas you have into the suggestion box in the lobby located near the scan-in computer.

do not know that, and the ditch is still there.

We want to encourage anyone to attend our advisory council that meets on the 4th Thursday of every month. This is such a great meeting where you are able to share ideas and hear what the staff has to say about upcoming changes and events. All are invited! We appreciate ALL of our members and hope all of you have a wonderful and blessed holiday!
