COOKING DEMONSTRATION: CRANBERRY CHICKEN 21 Birthday Potluck 21 Quilting Bee 22 Presentation on Acupuncture

28 Red Hat Society

If you would like to add a great new dish to your collection of menus, come to the Center on Thursday, August 8. We were looking for an entrée that is tasty — as well as quick and easy to prepare — when a Center member recommended Karin Gill’s Cranberry Chicken. We lucked up when Karin agreed to demonstrate for us how to make this dish which has a tangy sauce and is served over noodles. Mmm, pasta! She will begin at 10:30 and then, when the cooking is done, we’ll enjoy it for lunch at about 11:30. The demonstration is free, the lunch is $4. You can join us for lunch, even if you can’t make the demonstration. Please sign up by Monday the 5th.

RED HAT SOCIETY TO TOUR NOLENSVILLE BED & BREAKFAST Alfred and Evelyn Bennett, longtime proprietors of Homeplace Bed & Breakfast in Nolensville, have started a new B&B venture that represents quite a slice of history. Formerly Newt McCord’s home, part of the structure of Nolensville Bed & Breakfast is said to be the original William Nolen dwelling. On Wednesday, August 28th, Mr. Bennett will tell Red Hat Society members all about the home as they tour the “new” place. Lunch will follow at a nearby eatery. The van leaves the Center at 9:30; van fee is $3.

FROM THE DIRECTOR… Thank you to everyone who contributed to our matching challenge campaign for 2013. We have raised over $4000, and we are so grateful for each and every one of the contributions we received.

TRIP

TO

HISTORIC FRANKLIN

We’ll make two stops in Franklin on Tuesday, August 6. Our first destination is Landmark Booksellers. One of the few remaining brick-and-mortar bookstores, Landmark carries new, old and rare books, but specializes in regional literature and history. The building, erected in 1836, is known as The Old Factory Store and its visitors are said to include Andrew Jackson and Davy Crockett. Joel Tomlin, who co-owns the store with his wife, Carol, will share information with us about the bookstore and the building’s history. After Landmark, we’ll mosey over to Dotson’s Restaurant for a good lunch. Van leaves the Center at 9:45. Van fee is $5

On a personal note, I also want you to know how much I appreciate your help and encouragement as I made the transition from Program Director to Center Director. I am so happy to be your Center Director, and thrilled to announce that we are once again fully staffed. Please join us as we

CURIOUS ABOUT ACUPUNCTURE? Most of us have heard about acupuncture. And, for most of us, the main thing we know is that it involves needles! Let’s explore the topic more thoroughly on Thursday, August 22, at 10:30, when acupuncturist Sheila Day, L.Ac., is scheduled to make a presentation at the Center. The list of health concerns that acupuncture can effectively treat is quite lengthy and includes: arthritis, asthma, depression, fibromyalgia, sleep disturbances, tennis elbow, back pain and many other forms of pain. Sheila will discuss these with us and demystify acupuncture by sharing some of its history, how acupuncturists are educated, and how safe the procedure is. If you have medical issues and are interested in learning about alternatives to standard Western treatments, join us for this presentation — and bring your questions! The Center will serve lunch following the program at 11:30. Cost is $4. Please sign up if you plan to attend.

usher in a new day at FiftyForward College Grove, and watch for new opportunities to learn and have fun here. As always, thank you for your continued support.

BLUEGRASS MUSIC AND HOMEMADE ICE CREAM FOR BIRTHDAY POTLUCK Birthday Potluckers are in for a real treat this month when veteran musician, Jon Martin, brings a group of his friends to perform bluegrass music for us at the Center. And, to cool us off from the sizzling sounds and the hot August temperatures, we’ll be cranking out some homemade ice cream. Celebrate Center members’ birthdays with us this August 21st. Lunch at 11:30. Music around noon. Please bring a covered dish.

R ECIPES N EEDED We are reviewing designs and making plans for our upcoming cookbook to be published as a Center fundraiser. Special thanks to those of you who have already submitted recipes. Our enthusiasm for this project increases with every contribution! We still need more recipes, though, and are asking our members to please bring up to three of your best, time-honored recipes for inclusion in the cookbook. Thanks!

SENIOR DAY AT WILLIAMSON COUNTY FAIR On Sunday, August 4, seniors will gather at the fair for a day of fun. There will be a luncheon at 11 am, followed by Bingo. All Seniors will be admitted free the entire day. The luncheon is free, however, it requires a ticket. The Center has a limited number available to give out. Stop by and pick up a

ticket if you plan to go.

QUILTERS FIRST MEETING SET To those of you looking for a quilting bee, we are delighted to announce that the first meeting of the College Grove Quilters is scheduled for Wednesday, August 21, at 1:30. The quilting frame is assembled and ready for duty. Our first project will be to put together a nine-square quilt, in theory to be auctioned as a fundraiser for the Center. But who knows? Once it’s completed, we may not be able to part with it! If anyone has scrap pieces of cotton quilting material that you would like to donate to the group, we would really appreciate it. See you after Birthday Potluck.
