And all that jazz

I love jazz. My dad loved jazz. He listened to Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Sarah Vaughan, Duke Ellington. Since he listened to them, we heard them, too. And since my dad loved it, I loved it, too (I was – am – a daddy’s girl). So when I got a chance to work with local businessman Rich Tews on some stuff for Jazz in the Hills, I jumped at it. Rich is such a good guy; very low key and under the radar, but boy! is he passionate about jazz! I am not kidding. After many months of brainstorming and trying to come up with ideas to grow the local organization, Rich and his team have hit (pun intended) on something pretty big. Jazz in the Hills is now at Alchemy at CopperWynd. Boasting one of the prettiest views in the community, Alchemy is the perfect spot for Jazz in the Hills. After three sessions at Alchemy, Jazz in the Hills went from about 20 to sometimes as many as 50 attendees to 172. Jazz in the Hills concerts are a fixture in Fountain Hills. Starting in a small real estate office on Saguaro to local churches, a series of other restaurants, including Appian Way, Octagon Café and Fireside Grill, there was a devoted following of music lovers at the dif-

ferent venues. The world-class jazz groups who have faithfully returned each Friday to Fountain Hills have entertained and amazed those who wouldn’t give up their own love for jazz. So now there is a new venue and a new vibe. Rich says the audience has changed, too. One of the primary goals the board has had was to attract a different demographic in addition to the loyal audience attending week after week. The target: Kids. “The shows are now attended by people of all ages,” Rich says. “The demographics now display a pleasant mix of young and old and everyone in between. During the set break, kids are lining up to talk with the musicians. They are curious, interested, learning.” Rich told me last summer he worried that young people don’t have the kind of appreciation for jazz he had, or our parents had. Jazz is an American art form. It was born in this country. It is rich in history, an illustration of the evolution of our times. Having the genre disappear because young people haven’t been exposed to it would be pretty tragic. By going to the concerts and hearing the music that is the root of their own music today, these young people will keep the songs alive. And like Rich said, the old pseudoscience of alchemy is alive and well turning Jazz in the Hills in to the hottest ticket in town. (Editor’s Note: Admission to Jazz in the Hills is free. Shows are from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. every Friday and feature a wide variety of jazz styles. Jazz in the Hills is a newly formed 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and will begin soliciting memberships in the near future. Watch for more information in Let’s Go! and on Facebook.)

The “art season” gets under way Nov. 9 with the opening of the Fountain Festival of Arts and Crafts in Fountain Hills.

Art season ‘official’ with Fountain Festival

The “art season” gets officially under way this month with the 38 th Annual Fountain Festival of Arts and Crafts. The event, set for Nov. 9, 10 and 11 on the Avenue of the Fountains in Fountain Hills, will feature nearly 500 artists, according to Events Director Sharon Morgan, with the Chamber of Commerce. “We have several new artists, as well as old favorites,” Morgan said. “We also have some old favorites who haven’t been here for awhile returning.” Booths will line the Avenue and be placed along Saguaro between the Avenue and Parkview. There is an increase in the number of artists who are taking more than one booth this year. “For the past few years, we have had right at 70 artists taking more than one booth,” Morgan said. “This year, we have 85. I think it is a sign that things are getting a little better (with the economy). I am really glad to see this.” Entertainment and food booths also will be set up in the festival area. The Sahnas Brothers are returning to the Festival and will be set up near Saguaro Boulevard, while a band new to the festival, 11th Hour, will be playing near the Avenue of the Fountains and Verde River Drive. 11th Hour plays a variety of music from

pop to jazz and genres in between. Morgan said the festival will bring some 250,000 people to Fountain Hills over the three-day event. Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Parking and admission are free.

31st Annual Orme Dam Days mark Fort McDowell Community’s victory

Dancers will participate in the 31st annual Orme Dam Victory Days celebration at Fort McDowell Nov. 16 through Nov. 18. The Fort McDowell Yavapai Community celebrates the government’s decision to not build Orme Dam, which would have effectively disbanded the tribe. (Photos by Mike Scharnow)

The Annual Orme Dam Victory Days is a celebration on a number of levels. This year’s activities take place from Friday, Nov. 16 through Sunday, Nov. 18. The 31st anniversary celebrates the federal government’s decision to give up its effort to build a dam at the confluence of the Verde and Salt rivers. The dam would have flooded two-thirds of the 24,000-acre Fort McDowell Community, effectively disbanding the tribe. The tribe, then impoverished, had been offered cash settlements and new homes. The tribe now also celebrates the social and economic gains made by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation since then-Interior Secretary James Watt announced the dam would not be built. In 1976, 61 percent of the tribe voted to reject the government’s offer. Tribal members committed to defeating the dam, traveling to Washington to tell federal officials they did not want to move. Tribal members also marched for three days from Fort McDowell to the Arizona State Capitol to make their point about moving. The public is invited to the free event. There is a $10 parking fee. Among the activities are the annual Pow

A crowd favorite at the annual Orme Dam Victory Days at Fort McDowell is the Pow Wow, which features colorful costumes and demonstrations of the Yavapai Nation’s culture. Wow, an All-Indian Rodeo, Yavapai Village and Cultural Performances, a parade and a 5K run and walk. There also are softball, basketball and golf tournaments.

The rescue team for them the Maricopa County Sheriff ’s Department with their search and rescue canines also will be on hand. Representatives of the McDowell Mountain Preservation Commission, the Sonoran Conservancy and the McDowell Park Association will be present to offer information about the park, the preserve and how citizens can be involved as stewards of the environment. Marchers will head north along Saguaro Boulevard, turn west onto Palisades and end on La Montana Drive. Parade marshal will be Chamber of Commerce events producer Sharon

Chamber President/CEO Frank Ferrara said Morgan’s selection as marshal will pay tribute to her involvement in numerous town activities, including a term as mayor and the Chamber events producer for the two annual arts and crafts festivals. Floats representing civic organizations and businesses; church or children affiliations, marching /walking groups, motorized and equestrian individuals or units will comprise the divisions. Santa Claus also is the last unit. Entries will be judged and prizes awarded to the best in each classification. Participants are encouraged to include music to carry out the holiday theme.

Finding the funny by Bob Howard The Dave Thurston Improvised Comedy Club Location. Contact Information, Parking: Dave Thurston’s Improvised Comedy Club is located in the Renaissance Hotel at 9495 W. Coyotes Blvd., Glendale 85305. The contact number to make reservations is (480) 784-7258 or the email is Dthurt1980@gmail.com. There is more than ample free parking all around the hotel. It is right next to the hockey arena in Glendale.

Show Times and Tickets: Show times are 7:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. every Friday and Saturday. Tickets cost $10. Beverage and Food Service: The show is actually done in the Soliel Restaurant which can be entered directly from the lobby of the hotel. They have a full menu available for dinner but they have a happy hour menu just for the comedy show which is a great bargain with $3 draft beer and half price appetizers. We had the sweet potato fries and the steak quesadilla along with a beer and a glass of wine and the bill was less than $17. The food was excellent and we may go back some time just to have dinner. The Venue: The room is a very long rectangle with an elevated stage on one of the long sides. Seating is around the dining tables but things can be rearranged for the size of your group. Lighting was good and all the performers could be seen, but sound was a bit of a challenge because the microphones were not staged to pick up the voices of the performers. If you sit in the middle of the room near the stage, it was not a problem, but those on the far ends of the room were not always in range of the voices. It was the first show, and Dave indicated they would be taking steps to correct the situation.

The Comedians: Dave Thurston is a long-time Valley favorite who has an extensive background in both improv comedy and standup. If you are interested in doing improv, he has written a book and does classes at Tempe Center for the Arts. He has assembled a group of approximately 18 different improv comics which makes for endless combinations so that no two shows will be the same. This is very different than standup as the audience gets to participate by making suggestions of situations from which the comics construct a comedy scene. If you liked the Drew Carey series “Whose Line Is It Anyway,” this will be your cup of tea. On opening night they had 12 members of the troupe on hand which made things a bit crowded on stage. Dave told me they would probably cut that back to six to eight performers in the future, which is more than enough for these kinds of shows. The quality is going to vary from exercise to exercise, but the thing I liked was that they are making the effort to create a show that will not offend. Hence, there is an absence of four letter words or bathroom subject matter that pervade too many of the open mic shows. This is

More Movie Stuff

MY PICKS by Ryan Winslett

November is a pretty busy month for movies, including lots of flicks to pick from whether you’re out with the family, seeing something with the significant other, or just flying solo. With the holidays right around the corner, November is a good time to get out and spend some quality time with the family planted in front of the silver screen. November sees the release of Rise of the Guardians and Wreck-It Ralph, both of which look to be bona fide winners. Rise of the Guardians features a modern take on everybody’s favorite childhood characters, uniting to save the world from a nightmare-spreading villain. Wreck-It Ralph, on the other hand, is about a video game villain who wants to become a hero. Both family flicks offer great voice casts

and look like the right mix of jokes and references to keep viewers young and old entertained. If you’re in the market for something a little more adult, however, November still has you covered. At the top of that list are Lincoln and Skyfall. With a lead performance by Daniel Day-Lewis and a strong pedigree behind every aspect of the film, Lincoln looks like one of those movies that kicks off the early Oscar talk. Skyfall, though, looks like a high octane, action-packed roller coaster ride through the latest Bond adventure. Whether you’re looking for drama or bullets, one of these two films should be a safe bet for a great night at the local theater.
